Coal that meets customer specifications is often stored in silos prior to being loaded into railcars. However, it is often found that, after loading, the coal contained in a particular car does not meet customer specifications. This can occur because of the variability inherent in the coal and because of segregation, mixing and flow inside the silo. Some contracts now require the coal in each car to be within specification. Silo flow models are used to predict quality in such cases. However, developing an accurate silo flow model for each case is difficult and time consuming. This paper examines the viability of using an online analyzer in conjunction with a feedback circuit to optimize the quality of the coal being loaded into trains, so that each car meets the quality specifications.

The centre of the mining operations of the International Nickel Company, Ontario Division is Sudbury, a city of 160,000 population located 240 miles northwest of Toronto (Fig. 1). Within thirty miles of this city and located around the rim of the geological formation known as the Sudbury Basin are the ten underground mines and one open pit operated by the Company (Fig. 2). There are also four developing mines, three in the Sudbury area and one at Shebandowan, near the city of Thunder Bay, Ontario and approximately 150 miles north east of Duluth, Minnesota. In 1971 the mines produced 22,800,000 tons, 20,600,000 tons from underground and the balance from open pits. Also located in the Sudbury District are facilities to extract and refine the metals contained in the ore. There is a nickel refinery located at Port Colborne on Lake Erie. An additional nickel refinery is under construction near Sudbury. Fifteen elements are recovered from the Sudbury ores, nickel, copper, iron, sulphur, gold, silver, cobalt, tellurium and the six platinum group metals, platinum, palladium, iridium, rhodium, ruthenium and osmium. With the occurrences of serious mill structural failures on both ball and primary mills, the mining industry has entered the era of detailed fabrication specifications. Such specifications, however, have been developed as individual entities, often by people not related to the mill design function. Therefore, there has been no effort to relate mill failure or safety to the existence or elimination of specific fabrication flaws; that is, no cause-effect failure relationships have been developed. The omission of this step produces a specification which can be termed uneconomical at best. The present paper attempts to fill this void, by reviewing methods for design consideration of flawed structures, and describing experimental tests used to tie such data to a meaningful quality assurance program in fabrication.

The presence of elements, minerals, or chemical compounds in materials at very low concentrations is becoming a constantly increasing concern for several segments of the Industry. Some trace elements or chemical compounds may be considered as hazardous, some are simply considered as undesirable In complex processes where they could be constantly recycled and end up as the major factor of decreasing quality for some valuable products. In some other cases, the presence of a trace element or mineral may be highly desirable because of its economical value: precious metals are falling into this category, they probably were the first trace elements to draw our attention. Tremendous quantity of money is spent for analysis at the trace level, also the analytical "tool" has been considerably improved during recent years, but still the sampling aspect of the problem remains obscur for many, and because of it, large quantity of analytical efforts become meaningless. Not only the absence of sampling strategies is badly affecting the representativeness of a large majority of samples, but furthermore for the same reasons, many laboratories are failing In their endeavor to prepare reliable standard reference materials. The reason of this failure has its roots in the unability to estimate effectively the sampling characteristics of the element, mineral, or compound of interest, not to mention the unability to perform precise and accurate complete analysis, so essential for the instrumental analyst (1). In this paper a strategy to perform a better sampling operation is recommended. Anorthosite is an abundant, domestic source of alumina with reserves in individual deposits ranging from a few billion to hundreds of billions of tons. While anorthosite contains less alumina than does kaolinite, its CaO and Na20 contents are significantly higher (Figure 1). Alumina can be produced from anorthosite by alkaline, soda-lime sinter or acid processes. CaO and Na20 are advantageous because they are reactants consumed in alkaline processes. Acid processes require high calcium plagioclase feldspars (bytownite-anorthite) to obtain high alumina extraction because the lower calcium plagioclase feldspars (andesine-labradorite) are not as readily dissolved during digestion. The layered Raggedy Mountain Gabbro group in the Wichita complex in southwest Oklahoma is a high calcium anorthosite that could be processed by acid, sinter, or alkaline methods. Chemical grade limestone in the Arbuckle Group is located within 45 km of the anorthosite (Figure 2).

Presently, mobile diesel equipments contributes a lot in improving the economical feasibility of underground mining and tunneling operations. Even in Korea, quite a large number of diesel equipments is being applied to the underground workings already. This paper introduced the production procedure, characteristics and evaluation technology on diesel particulate matter(DPM) that is known as a carcinogen For easy measurement of DPM using laser dust monitor, the conversion factor(K) to gravimetric concentration was acquired. The field measurement of DPM was conducted to make a comparison between locally manufactured on-road equipments and imported equipments specially designed for underground use. According to the Government regulation revised h 1996, it was learned that the critical pollutants among the diesel exhaust is DPM instead of NOx which have been considered as a critical pollutants.

The project development metallurgist is faced with an interesting dilemma: The use of overly conservative metallurgical projections and cost estimates can kill a project that has the potential to provide needed jobs and growth to a company's bottom line. On the other hand if the metallurgist uses a highly aggressive approach by trimming capital and operating cost estimates to the bone and by applying highly optimistic metallurgical projections, there is a risk of creating a project that can never live up to expectations. The metallurgist must walk a tightrope between "sandbagging" and "overoptimism," and this tightrope is fraught with political intrigue and difficulty. This paper takes a some- what lighthearted look at some of the political aspects associated with this issue, and other issues, and offers a few guidelines for walking the "political metallurgical" tightrope.

One advantage of kriging is that it provides both an estimate of the block or point grade, and an indication of the local precision via the kriging variance. If one assumes that the estimation errors are normally distributed, then confidence intervals for the grades can be calculated. But in mining, grades are rarely normally distributed; in general, they are skew. This is particularly true for precious metals. In this paper we study confidence intervals for variables with non-normal distributions. Using a non linear geostatistical technique, the grades are transformed into their normally distributed equivalents. Confidence intervals are obtained for these normal variables, and back transformed to give the corresponding confidence intervals for the grades, for either points or blocks. This approach is applied to gold data from the Witwatersrand basin in South Africa.

The method usually used to predict the direction of flow in a connecting airway is to conduct a survey of the two existing nodes to be connected by the new pressure airway. It is then assumed that the air will flow from the node with the measured higher pressure to the node with measured lower pressure. This paper examines this direction-of-flow problem using properties of the system characteristic curve for a two-terminal network and specifies some conditions that will ensure that the air will flow in the direction anticipated. It was concluded that the only requirement is that all characteristic curves of the fans in the network should be strictly decreasing. Five numerical examples illustrate some important proper- ties of the direction-of-flow problem.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research on the application of expert sys tens technology to mining equipment diagnostics and predictive maintenance, to increase mining productivity and efficiency. One of the greatest hindrances to mining productivity is the breakdown of equipment, causing lengthy and costly delays. A diagnostic maintenance expert system (DIMES) is being developed for the hydraulic system of a continuous coal mining machine. Through the use of such a system, the frequency of equipment failures and repair time should be significantly reduced. This paper describes the application domain, the functional requirements, and the problem approach for DIMES, the design and implement at i on of the knowledge- based system, the sensor work involved with the project, and the future plans for the continued development of this and other expert systems.

The four most important parameters controlling the flow of as in coal are the gas content, permeability, diffusion coefficient and clear characteristics. Estimates of these and, more importantly, a good knowledge about the variations in their values over time are important for proper simulation of long-term gas production. This paper describes experimental techniques for the estimation of diffusion-coefficient and permeability values, along with their time dependency under simulated in situ conditions. It is shown that the permeability and diffusion-coefficient values are not constant, as they are usually assumed to be. There is a significant variation in their values, probably as a result of changes in the microstructures of coal associated with release and flow of gas. Finally, a technique to estimate clear parameter is presented.

All coal preparation unit operations in which fine coal is handled depend to some extent on wettability of coal surface by water. The wetting results from interactions between the coal surface and water molecules that are determined by the composition of coal matrix (interrelated with coal rank) and heterogeneous constituents such as oxygen functional groups, mineral impurities and pores. The contact angle of water on an unoxidized, homogeneous coal hydrocarbon matrix is calculated to be 100o, and much lower values measured on real coal specimens result from contributions from the heterogeneous constituents. While the effect of wettability is critical in flotation and oil agglomeration, suppression of respirable dust, and coal water fuels, it has been shown to play a significant role also in coal flocculation with semi-hydrophobic and totally hydrophobic flocculants.

The mining industry has long recognized the value of dispatch systems in open pit mines as they reduce load and haul costs. Over the years, researchers have proposed many dispatch systems with various limitations and advantages. The simplest dispatch algorithms are the so called 1-truck-for-N-shovels dispatch strategy. These algorithms are limited by the fact that their objective functions do not consider all the objectives of a mine and cannot be applied to all possible truck-shovel configurations. They are also myopic in nature. However, they are simple and computationally efficient and do not require occasional updates of the upper stage problem as required in multi-stage dispatch algorithms. In this work, an agent-based truck dispatch algorithm that conceptualizes trucks as intelligent agents that make autonomous dispatching decisions to maximize their utility is proposed. The advantages of this algorithm includes utility functions that encapsulate all of management’s objectives and agent’s with broad situational awareness. They are also more suitable for autonomous trucks. We evaluate the new algorithm against a simple 1-truck-for-N-shovels dispatch strategies using discrete event simulation. The simulation results show that the new utility function has significant advantages over 1-truck-for-N-shovels inspired utility functions. Future work will incorporate adaptive behavior into the model via reinforcement learning algorithm. INTRODUCTION In an attempt to optimize truck shovel operations in open pit mines in order to reduce the cost of haulage operation, which according to (Alarie and Gamache, 2002) is estimated to be about 50-60% of the total cost of mining, several effective and efficient strategies have been developed. Optimizing truck haulage systems in an open pit mine is one of the greatest challenges of mining engineering and has been the subject of many research projects. It is important that haulage systems are designed to be efficient, in order to minimise haulage cost, improve profitability and increase the total mine value. Although optimizing the number of trucks required in the operation of open pit mines can help reduce the cost, an effective and efficient truck dispatching system add value by ensuring that the available trucks are used efficiently. With truck dispatching systems, the trucks are normally dispatched between the crusher and dumping station (e.g. waste dumps and stockpiles), and the shovels in order to maximize the total output, obtain grades targets, reduce fuel consumptions and other objectives. Truck dispatching, which can have one or more objectives, is typically subjected to certain operational constraints such as truck and shovel capacities, empty and loaded trucks speed, among others. The problems associated with truck dispatching was first mentioned by Dantzig and Ramser (1959) after they made an attempt to determine the optimum routes of a fleet of delivery trucks between bulk terminals and a service stations. The problem occurs in several industrial systems besides mining (Alarie and Gamache, 2002; Gendreau et al., 2006; Rego and Roucariol, 1995). The dispatching problem, also referred in literature as the vehicle routing problem, has seen a number of modifications and extensions with Bertsimas and Ryzin (1991) presenting a dynamic and stochastic vehicle routing problem, and Ralphs et al. (2003) also adding to the original concept, the concept of vehicle capacity routing.

"INTRODUCTION In underground longwall coal mining, the mined-out areas or gobs frequently contain methane which can form explosive methane-air mixtures. Historically, there have been many events of mine fires and explosions recorded in the United States and other countries that have demonstrated the existence of such explosive mixtures, herein referred to as Explosive Gas Zones (EGZs), inside and around the perimeter of bleeder-ventilated longwall gobs (Loane et al., 1975; Lynn et al., 1986; Elkins, et al., 2001; McKinney et al., 2001; Dziurzynski and Wasilewski, 2012; Brune, 2013). The risk of mine explosions can increase if the EGZs migrate out from the gob into the surrounding mine entries. Several factors can induce EGZs outflowing from the gob, but the most common cause is the fluctuating barometric pressure. Atmospheric pressures change regularly every day but can fluctuate abruptly and become increasingly hazardous in adverse weather conditions. Other sudden pressure changes can result from roof falls, failing ventilation controls and fan outages. Any such fluctuation of mine ventilation pressure will disturb the pressure differential between the gob and the surrounding mine workings and may cause EGZs to outgas from the gob. The correlation between major mine explosions and abrupt barometric pressure changes has been studied and confirmed for explosions in coal mining countries including the United States, South Africa, Australia, and Poland (Hosler, 1948; Boyer, 1964; Kissell et al., 1973; Fauconnier, 1992; Hemp, 1994; Wasilewski, 2014; Belle, 2014; and Lolon, 2017). Disastrous mine explosions appear to happen more frequently during stormy weather, which, in the United States, typically occurs during the late fall and winter seasons. ROOT CAUSE AND EFFECT OF GOB BREATHING Gob breathing is the result of the pressure differential between gob internal and external pressures caused by external atmospheric pressure fluctuations that occur naturally as a result of gravitational and thermal forces in the atmosphere (Lindzen and Chapman, 1969). Other major and sudden pressure changes may be caused by fan failures, failures of ventilation controls or roof falls can also cause an unexpected gob breathing. Normal barometric fluctuations occur every day but usually do not pose an explosion risk as they occur gradually so gob pressures have sufficient time to equilibrate. More extreme fluctuations associated with cyclonic weather systems and storms often result in more rapid and larger drops or rises in barometric pressure (Hosler, 1948; Fauconnier, 1992). A study by Lolon (2017) found that the timing of historical mine explosions showed consistency with the occurrence of abrupt and intense barometric variations."

The results of an experimental study of polymer-induced flocculation of clay suspensions in continuous, stirred-tank reactors are presented. The effects of polymer dosage, mixing time and mixing intensity are shown to be generally similar to those observed for equivalent batch systems, but flocculation appears to be generally less effective in the continuous process. Settling rates are lower and supernatant turbidities are higher for the continuous system. It is postulated that non-equilibrium effects due to simultaneous polymer adsorption and floc growth can be exploited so as to enhance flocculation in batch systems. The nature of the continuous process, however, offers less opportunity for taking advantage of such effects. Conditions in a continuous flocculation system inherently lead to a closer approach to equilibrium.

In 1947, coal production in Western Canada was 10 Mt (11 million st) which predominantly came from 120 underground mines. By 1968 production was down to 1 Mt (1.1 million st). Production in 1981 was back up to 29 Mt (32 million st), but only 1.5 Mt (1.7 million st) of the total was from underground mines. In fact, because of competition from open-pit mines, only two underground mines were operating in 1981-the McIntyre and B.C. Coal mines. While several other underground mines are being planned, this article will deal with only the two in production. Geology The geology in Western Canada is frequently complicated; hence only more regular deposits are mined. Coal is generally thick, often steeply pitched and usually soft or well cleated. The 5000-km (3,100-mile) coal belt that runs from the Yukon to Mexico is well developed in Western Canada. It is divided into two distinct regions-the Rocky Mountain Lower Cretaceous coals and the mostly uniform level Upper Cretaceous coals of the plains area to the east. Isolated pockets of coal occur at Vancouver Island and Hat Creek. Hat Creek's massive 300-m (984-ft) thick geologically recent lignite deposit is 250 km (155 miles) inland. Geography The infrastructure of Western Canada is shown in Fig. 1 along with the locations of the two mines. Both rely on exports of premium low volatile metallurgical coal mostly to the Pacific Rim. The rail distance from both mines to port is 1100 km (684 miles)-accounting for a significant portion of the sales cost of the coal. Mining Methods Two main mining methods are used-room and pillar and hydraulic. Longwall has been attempted and is being considered again. In the past, a simple hand method used gravity to help mine most of the coal on steep pitches. Levels were driven in the seam, rising slightly to assist in draining. On the advance, mining would start at the upper level, usually from adits driven in the side of the mountain. Rooms or angles were driven up 100 m (328 ft) at a suitable angle for the coal to flow down. On retreating out of the level, the pillars would be taken, starting from the highest point, using batteries to stop coal or rock flushing down the room. Batteries consisted of three to six stout wooden posts set at an angle to resist material flow. Coal loading was directly from chutes at the bottom of raises into 1- to 2-t mine cars hauled by diesel or battery locomotives. Often output was restricted by the supply of empty cars. Mechanization began in the 1960s but was difficult in these conditions. Mines such as Canmore and Coleman continued operation into the 1970s but closed because steep seams, high methane emissions, and faulting made mining difficult. Utilization of the magnesium aluminate spinel in refractor' applications is briefly reviewed. The synthesis of a magnesia aluminate spinet aggregate from natural raw materials is considered in terms of the crystal chemistry of the spinet structure and expected impurities. Principles for the formation of this spinet refractory aggregate from different natural raw materials are presented. The basic concepts were then applied to the reaction of a bauxitic clay with a natural magnesite. This combination of raw materials has the potential to produce a low-cost refractor' aggregate that is a composite of spinel and forsterite. Experimental results are reported to produce a spinel refractor.' aggregate containing a small amount of forsterite. It possesses low apparent porosity and high bulk density suitable for industrial refractor' applications, including steelmaking, aluminum and copper foundries and cement production.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration has developed a model to estimate diesel particulate (dp) exposures in underground mines. The estimate uses either in-mine measured dp concentrations or engine manufacturers' standardized emission data and through a series of calculations estimates full shift dp concentrations by applying standard engineering principles of ventilation, control technology and work cycle. This model, in the form of a computer spreadsheet, provides the mining industry with a method to estimate diesel particulate levels and determine the impact of various diesel particulate controls on occupational exposure to dp in underground mines. A detailed description of the estimator and several examples demonstrating the results are provided.

The concept of "classification is expanded beyond the performance of the classifying equipment to include all aspects of the fines removal system of the grinding circuit. Design and operating parameters which affect fines removal are identified and discussed, and a quantitative index for circuit fines removal effectiveness is defined. This approach lends new interpretation to certain observed phenomena, and suggests useful guidelines for circuit design and operation.
