INTRODUCTION Primarily because of mining at greater depth, an increasing number of coal mines in the United States experience floor heave problems. In many instances, the floor heaves at a slow rate without causing health and safety related problems; only additional roadway maintenance and coal handling equipment are required. However, when rapid, massive heaving occurs, the safety of mine personnel in the vicinity is jeopardized. Extensive floor heave causes a redistribution of stress around the mine opening and can cause additional ground control problems. This paper presents an analysis of rapid floor heave in a deep western coal mine. The analysis is based on field measurements, laboratory data, and beam design theory. Factors affecting floor heave, such as mining-induced stress, mine opening size, entry orientation, mine geology, rock physical properties, and gas pressure, are considered. Examination of floor heave in the mine indicates that heaving is primarily caused by deformation of a soft floor member that is subjected to high mining-induced stress. Theoretical analysis of in situ floor stresses resulting from overburden loading indicates that floor failure will occur. The analysis is confirmed by visual observations of floor heave in the mine. Recommendations for mine layout and opening design to control rapid, massive floor heave under these conditions are also presented. MINE-FLOOR-FOUNDATION THEORY The floor stratum in a coal mine acts as a foundation to support coal pillars and artificial supports, thereby providing support to the mine roof. The overburden load, transferred through pillars and other supports, applies tremendous stress to the floor. Soil mechanics theories provide solutions for foundation design problems that apply to the mine floor. Based on foundation theory, vertical load on pillars causes high shear stress zones in the floor. If the floor is relatively weak, it may fail and dislocate upward into the mine opening. Strong roof strata that do not readily fail transmit most of the overburden load through pillars to the floor. Heaving may result, depending on the thickness and physical properties of the floor

Introduction The disposal of mine tailings, development rock, and other unwanted refuse material underground in mines by using pneumatic conveying techniques has been undertaken in the coal industry for many years. Similar equipment has been utilized for backfilling hard rock mines and is currently being applied in a gold mine in South Africa where development rock is being stowed in the mined-out stopes to help reduce the incidence of rock outbursts. On a limited scale, pneumatic conveying has been applied for backfilling uranium mines and one particular mine in New Mexico, U.S.A., has used this technique for 8 years. Other uranium mines in this area are now considerinq the dry backfill technique to eliminate the problems associated with hydraulic fill. The need to backfill in uranium mines is primarily of importance to improve ventilation, stabilize the pillars and roof, and possibly to extract a larger percentage of the uranium ore. If this can be achieved by utilizing the tailings from the beneficiation plant and using rock from the development headings which in itself may be slightly radioactive, then a greater benefit can be derived. Backfill can be achieved with hydraulic fill methods by running slurry into the stopes and allowing the water to decant and return through the footwall development entries to sumps for pumping to the surface. However there are several disadvantages associated with this method in that water is percolating throough the mine workings; it is necessary to build bulk heads in flat lying deposits; it is difficult to fill right to the back; and the decanted water takes with it quantities of the finer sand particles which results in maintenance problems with the mine pumps. Pneumatic conveying can overcome these problems in that the voids can be completely filled with high degree of compaction, heavy bulk heads are not necessary, the development rock can be added to the pneumatic system for disposal underground so eliminating hoisting cost to the surface, and cement can be added to the wetted material. Using pure albite and quartz minerals, the separation of albite from quartz using mixed cationic/anionic reagent schemes is assessed through Hallimond flotation, zeta potential and diffuse reflectance FTIR studies. The reagent schemes are tested in bench-scale flotation for the separation of albite from Greek Stefania feldspar ore. The single mineral flotation tests showed the feasibility of selective albite flotation from quartz at around pH 2 using a mixture of cationic diamine and anionic sulfonate collectors or a combined cationic-anionic collector of diamine-dioleate. In contrast to the selective flotation response of albite at pH 2, where albite is slightly negatively charged and quartz possess zero charge, the zeta potential and FTIR studies elucidate similar adsorption behavior of mixed collectors on both of the minerals. The infrared spectra not only showed the co-adsorption of anionic sulfonate or oleate with diamine on the surface but also showed that the diamine adsorption increases with the presence of anionic collector. The intrusion of anionic collector in between adjacent surface alkyl ammonium ions decreases electrostatic head-head repulsion, thereby increasing the diamine adsorption by increasing the hydrophobic tail-tail bonds. The discrepancy in the flotation and adsorption results at pH 2 is attributed to the coarse and fine size particles employed in these studies, respectively. The comparable adsorption on fine particles of albite and quartz at pH 2 is explained by the interaction of ammonium ions on silanol groups by hydrogen bonding besides electrostatic interactions. The bench-scale flotation results indeed showed that selective albite flotation takes place only after desliming the feed material. An albite concentrate exceeding 10% (by weight) Na20 is produced from a material containing about 6.5% (by weight) Na20, where an albite product of more than 9% (by weight) Na20 is considered to be valuable. As a result of higher levels of production and greater depths the underground mining industry in the UK is encountering hotter climates in some workplaces. It is widely known that high heat and humidity in an underground workplace will result in reduced performance and may also seriously impair the health and safety of the workforce. It is therefore of paramount importance that the underground environment can be effectively predicted in order that sound decisions can be made to reduce the effect of climate on working personnel. Over the years numerous computer programs have been developed to predict the climate in underground mines. One such important program, developed by McPherson, is CLlMSlM TM which is a prediction model of heat and mass transfer along a single roadway. This paper describes the development of a computer model, called DRIVE, to predict the climate in single entry drivages. This program incorporates the theory established by McPherson for the development of CLlMSlM TM. This involves the algorithm for unsteady state heat transfer. Throughout the development of DRIVE underground measurements have been taken to correlate the program. DRIVE will predict the changes in psychrometric and thermo- dynamic conditions along the drivage depending on a number of parameters. Firstly, the type of auxiliary ventilation system employed such as forcing, exhausting, overlap. Secondly, the addition of heat and moisture due to autocompression, machinery, strata, fissure water, oxidation, broken rock, fallen rock, refrigeration equipment, lighting, personnel, service water. Recent publications indicate that there is a rising interest in the field of mining method selection, and increasing efforts are being undertaken to develop satisfying solutions. Yet, computer assistance for mining method selection (MMS), or in other, terms assistance in the (pre-)feasibility state of a project, still lags behind the computer application in other mining activities. This is true for research as well as for application. This paper is intended as a contribution to the development in computer-assisted mining method selection, and focuses especially on underground hard-rock mining. It is structured in four main parts. The first deals with general aspects of mining method. selection within the process of mine planning, and with problems and requirements which derive from this specific situation. In the second part some numerical MMS-approaches hitherto published are briefly introduced, and investigations on these approaches are discussed. Based on .these experiences, in the third part an analysis of the complex system MMS is presented. It focuses on heuristics, influencing factors, objectives, assessment-routines and mining methods, and emphasizes the essential necessity of a profound mining method description (MMD) specially developed for the requirements of MMS and numerical processing. Accordingly the fourth part of this paper presents a mining method description model developed at the Department of Mining Engineering, Montan-University Leoben (MUL), Austria. It describes the consequences of the investigation, in particular the new mining method description model, on 'the design of a MMS-system. The paper closes with a outlook on the possibilities of an successful MMS-system being realised.

The regulation of exposure of underground personnel to radon and its daughter products has significantly changed since the 1950's. The U.S. Bureau of Mines - Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA) - Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) sequence of standards and regulations have lowered the maximum allowable occupational exposure and now the new Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants, effective in 1990, have further regulated uranium mine emissions. Under the authority of Section 112 of the Clean Air Act (42 U.S.C. 7401), the EPA has set regulations for the control of radon (Rn-222) emissions from underground uranium mines as well as other sources. Since the venting of radon from the mine atmosphere to the outside air is a major component of the miner's protection, and since this is the first quantitative effort to limit gaseous mine emissions to the environment, it was felt that it would be useful to examine the implementation of the EPA regulation at working mines. The concern was not only for determining compliance with the regulation but also for observing what effect the rule might have on mine air quality and thus on worker exposure. The regulation is stated in terms of the maximum permitted radiation dose to the closest potentially exposed individual, which is calculated from a computer program supplied by EPA and radon emission rates measured by the mine operator. Relative proximity to nearby populations determines the allowable magnitude of mine exhaust ventilation emissions. For some mines this is a serious operational constraint.

The transfer of Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) monolayers of collector molecules to the surface of mineral crystals is an excellent method for the study of collector adsorption phenomena and is of particular significance in the understanding and development of improved flotation separations. The fatty acid/fluorite and amine/sylvite potation systems were investigated by the Fourier transform infrared/internal reflection spectroscopy (FT-IR/IRS) examination of transferred LB monolayers of collector molecules at the surfaces of the mineral crystals. The [ir]-A isotherm study of fatty acid and amine, typical anionic and cationic collectors, showed the different packing trends dependent upon the pH and/or type of subphase. This result clearly reflects the effect of pH on compound formation and dissociation of the collector molecules. Identification of the collector adsorption state and confirmation of the validity of the FT-IR/IRS adsorption density equation were included in this research effort. This allowed for a detailed discussion of collector adsorption phenomena. As a result of these experiments, it is possible to relate the hydrophobic character of a surface to the nature of the adsorbed collector structure and thus describe flotation behavior in greater detail. For example, it appears that in the case of oleate/ fluorite the equivalent of an LB monolayer can form spontaneously during adsorption from solution, and this structure is known as a self-assembled monolayer (SAM). Such a state is significantly more hydrophobic than the oleate structure which forms on the calcite surface at an equivalent adsorption density.

In underground excavations, under high stress conditions, ground support systems must provide safe and effective response to dynamic events. These systems must be capable to resist dynamic impacts and yielding during the loading process. In this context dynamic testing of the reinforcement and retaining elements that compose the ground support system are required to study and improve the behaviour of these elements under dynamic load events. During the last years, Geobrugg has been working on the improvement of retaining products by testing them in a large-scale impact test facility located at Walenstadt, Switzerland. The test facility is composed of a double level platform with a square-shaped pyramidal trunk geometry, in the upper level housing a loading mass that drop from a height up to 5m. The loading mass is guided by one central steel pipe, and the impact occurs in the sample to be tested located at the lower level in a slab with an area of 3.6m × 3.6m where the ground support system is installed. During the last years, this innovative facility has been used to test several configurations of ground support systems. The results of these tests have enabled to improve the understating of the behaviour of ground support systems under dynamic loads. In this manuscript, the back analysis through numerical methods (central difference and Newmark’s method) of a ground support system tested with a double dynamic impact in 2019 is presented.

As stated by the Congress in the preamble of the act establishing the Office of Coal Research, its purpose is, "To encourage and stimulate the production and conservation of coal in the United States through research and development by authorizing the Secretary of the Interior to contract for coal research, and for other: purposes." Thus, while the overall responsibility for air pollution control from all sources rests primarily with the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, it is obvious that OCR could not perform its mandate of, increasing the utilization of our Nation's greatest energy resource if it ignored one of the greatest practical obstacles to achieving that objective. Therefore, air pollution abatement and prevention is one of the practical considerations taken into account in the selection of the OCR program. And as the severity of the air pollution problem imposes new restrictions on the use of coal, the importance of this criteria in the selection of OCR projects increases. The work done by OCR in air pollution abatement does not conflict with nor does it duplicate the program developed by HEW's National Center for Air Pollution Control. Technical members of the OCR staff maintain close formal and informal liaison with their counterparts in NCAPC. One formal agreement has been executed whereby the HEW agency has transferred funds to OCR for a practical study of the potential effectiveness of air pollution control when coal is burned in a fluidized bed comprised of inert alkaline earth material. The Rio Tinto-Zinc Corporation Limited (RTZ), through it exploration company Riofinex, commenced exploration for bauxite in the Amazonia region of Brazil during 1970. Following' encouraging indications, exploration licences were taken out and an exploration programme was initiated In February 1975, a preliminary 'feasibility report indicated that a project, based on the Miltonia plateau located close to the town of Paragominas in the State of Para, was viable and that barging might offer an economic solution to getting the product to an ocean-going port. A, decision was taken in April 1975 to proceed with a full feasibility study. In the latter stages of the study, an engineering consortium of Mendes Junior and Bechtel do Brasil was employed to review, and modify if necessary, the concepts that RTZ had developed for the project's operation. With these concepts agreed, the consortium was requested to make capital and operating cost estimates, and these became available during February 1978. The deposit is being developed by a Brazilian company Mineracao Vera Cruz S.A. (MVC) in which the present share-holding is owned 64 percent by RTZ and 36 percent by Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD). RTZ is a British based international group of mining and industrial companies with interests in almost every major metal and fuel. CVRD is a Brazilian mining company, 85 percent owned by the Brazilian Government, with a major interest in iron ore and also other non-ferrous metals. It is intended, in due course, that the company will become majority owned by Brazilian interests.

It is estimated that more than 80% of phosphate rock output in the world is used for fertilizer production. In India, there are only a few high-grade deposits of phosphate ores; therefore, most of the requirement for phosphatic fertilizers is satisfied with imported DAP (diamino phosphoric acid). Due to the drain on foreign exchange reserves, this import-dependent, essential commodity is in short supply in India and, therefore, is sparingly used by farmers. In addition, of the added phosphorus, normally 80% becomes unavailable to plants because phosphorus complexes are formed in soil, causing deleterious effects on plants. In our laboratory, this problem was tackled by using a bacterial consortium of phosphorus-solubilizing bacteria. It resulted in the speeding up of seed germination and increasing available phosphorus in the soil by 14%, over a period of 80 days. To use the low-grade deposits of phosphatic rocks available in India near Hirapur, Madhya Pradesh, India, which contain high amounts of iron, beneficiation through microbial means was used for phosphorus removal. Beneficiation was achieved partially through removal of extra iron by oxidizing ferrous iron from the ore by a Thiobacillus species after removal of impurities containing both silica and iron, instead of sieving and cleaning the ore using different techniques. This resulted in a cleaner ore, with nearly 70% of such impurities removed. The factors for beneficiation technique were standardized at the laboratory level and are being used for scaling up of the process. Thus, the beneficiation of phosphatic rock from Hirapur will be an important first step of phosphorus production in India.

The January 1988 issue of Engineering and Mining Journal includes two short articles on blasting practices in surface gold mines (Anon., 1988 ; Carr , 1988). A reader of these articles learns, among other things, that a "12 x 13 ft" blasting pattern is used at the Carson Hill Mine, and a "17-ft burden and 18-ft spacing" is used at Echo Bay Mineral's Borealis operation, while at Mascot's Nickel Plate Gold Mine "ore shots are on a 10 x 10 ft" pattern. Like a new edition of the World Book Almanac, these articles are overflowing with useful tidbits of technical data; but, they never mention why the particular blasting patterns were selected. A survey carried out during the Winter of 1988 at six surface gold mines in the western United States also failed to produce a satisfactory answer. The responses from mine planning engineers to the question "why is your blasting pattern X by Y", reduced to "we use X by Y here because we used X by Y at our last operation, and it worked ok." Certainly, with the available decades of experience and professional practice in blast holes design, rock fragmentation in surface mines has been thoroughly investigated. However, and this is the central issue, fragmentation of the rock is not the primary purpose of most rotary drill holes in surface gold mines. Small tonnage ore bodies can be developed at a profit on a short life basis. Such is the case of the Bardon Mine in. the Big Indian Mining District in San Juan County. Utah. Faced with a small initial tonnage of high grade uranium ore, the Shattuck Denn Mining Corporation Engineers developed some new ideas for sinking the shaft and planned extraction to warrant the capital risk to mine a limited reserve. The Bardon Mine is located fifty miles southeast of Moab, Utah in the south end of the Big Indian Mining -district. Shattuck Denn Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Shattuck Denn Mining Corporation, manages and operates the property under an operating agreement with Kerr-McGee Oil Industries, Inc. of. Oklahoma City. Oklahoma, and Anderson Development Corporation of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Based. on Kerr-McGee drilling., a tabular ore body about 350 feet long by 250 feet wide with an average thickness in excess of seven feet was indicated.- The ore body strikes easterly-westerly and dips from nine to twelve degrees to the south. Uraninite is the dominant uranium ore mineral associated with vanadium. The ore occurs in an arkosic conglomeratic sandstone with some interfingering of mudstone and shale in the Mossback member of the Chinle formation in contact with the underlying Cutler formation. The ore horizon is overlain with 40 to 60 feet of mudstone and shale. Fortunately, the back. immediately over the ore is a reasonable competent shaley sandstone which has made a fairly good. environment for roof bolting.

Typically, a project includes four main stages: definition, planning, implementation and control. Definition and planning are often the most overlooked stages, but are arguably the most important. This paper addresses practical techniques for the definition and planning of projects for underground construction.

In recent years, equipment manufacturers have been busy developing remote control systems to catch up with the sophistication and efficiency of continuous miners. Now the tables are turned, and manufacturers are undertaking the new challenge of upgrading, refining and equipping continuous miners to take full advantage of the capabilities made possible by modern, successful remote control systems. Because the operator can safely advance the miner farther without pulling out for roof bolting, continuous miners now need to be equipped with means of complying with correct face ventilation, dust suppression, methane detection, diffusion and improved lighting. Some of the exciting possibilities being developed to catch up with remote control include feedback controls using laser beams as datum points, coal sensing devices with feedback signals to show the operator what the machine is doing, show where it is relative to the coal seam, how hard it is working, and more sophisticated use of cyclic control. Mining machinery manufacturers have accepted the new challenges, and faster, safer mining procedures are already in sight.

Even though the mining industry in 1966 produced more ore than ever before, current extraction rates are only a fraction of what is expected in the later years of the twentieth century. Nearly 90% of all metals and-mineral products consumed last year was recovered by open-pit mining. This has placed great pressure on this segment of the industry which has, consequently, resulted in some spectacular developments. With increasing size of projects, the need for increased sophistication of engineering, planning, management and administration of modern mining installations has never become more apparent. The design of complete systems for the mine and plant that fit the mould of today's business and social environments is undergoing an evolutionary process. Traditional concepts in mine development and operations are being sidestepped in favor of new ideas and principles. As the overburden thickness increases, materials handling presents a major problem to mining companies, especially those concerned with the mass production of ore and waste from low-grade deposits. The profit margin here is likely to be significantly less as to take chances with capital investment. 1 Constant efforts are needed to improve upon productivity if the ore is to be economically mined.

Alkaline pressure oxidation (POX) is an oxidative pre-treatment option that is commercially used for high-carbonate sulfidic gold ores. The high carbonate grades within the feed ore shifts the ideal operating pH to a basic regime. Compared with acidic POX, alkaline POX typically requires additional steam input due to a lower sulfur oxidation load and a high rate of in-situ carbon dioxide generation that needs to be vented along with steam. The cost of this steam addition is the largest differentiator between acid POX operation and alkaline POX from a cost comparison. However, alkaline POX can offset these costs through reduced acid usage for pre-acidulation and decreased alkali reagent consumption for subsequent neutralization. This paper reviews the specific operating cost impacts of acid/base consumption between alkaline and acidic POX with ores which require pre-acidulation, the overall economics of alkaline POX, and the regimes in which alkaline POX is economically favorable. The findings aim to guide industry professionals in making informed decisions for alkaline POX adoption by providing a summary view of its operational benefits and costs, contributing to the development of cost-effective and sustainable gold ore processing techniques.

Ion exchange resin processes are receiving renewed attention in the mining industry for recovery;, of metals from solution. This interest has been inspired by the development of continuous countercurrent ion; exchange systems (CCIX) which are of much lower cost than the original, fixed bed contactor processes. With the countercurrent systems and new developments to process or upgrade the eluate product, ion exchange can now compete successfully with solvent extraction for treatment of uranium ores. The low concentration of U308 obtained in the CCIX strong eluate is generally upgraded by solvent extraction methods in sulfuric acid systems. Resin loadings of up to 120 grams per liter of U308, however, have been produced experimentally by recycling of eluate (HIM-IX process) and further developments may be expected in the near future. New developments in resin technology are bringing forth products of greater strength, loading capacity, selectivity and density. Densities up, to 1.35 spgr have been claimed by some suppliers. The process is not a new one and has taken years to advance to the present state of development. The earliest system to gain widespread acceptance was the resin-in-pulp system applied to uranium recovery. Ion exchange, however, later lost acceptance in favor of solvent extraction in the 1960's due to problems in resin degradation, resin contamination and resin-pulp separation, in addition to the development of improved solvent extraction reagents and techniques. The resin-in-pulp system continues to have application on high clay ores and has advanced in design. A number of other continuous ion exchange systems were also tried but never gained continued acceptance. In the current resurgence period the CCIX systems to gain acceptance were the Utah and Chem-Sep (Higgins Loop) systems. These processes are relatively simple in concept although require sophisticated controls. Fixed bed columns have also been designed into multistage systems in countercurrent operation but are not discussed in this paper. These systems remain competitive today for many applications. The most recent advancements however have been in the multistage contactors from,, which three are in current acceptance. These are the Himsley, Porter, and NIM systems. All industrial applications of these systems are relatively new, although pilot plant and in-plant development has been in progress over the last decade. Several significant past and present producers of high grade and bulk tonnage gold ore from southeastern California and southwestern Arizona can be empirically and genetically linked to regional peraluminous magmatism which occurred during the late Cretaceous and early Tertiary. Geological relationships and geochemical characteristics from the Fortuna Mine area will be described and compared to those of the Tumco Mines area. Each of these historical gold producers is viewed as a morphologic end member in otherwise genetically linked metallogeny. Cold-quartz veins at Fortuna can be directly linked to peraluminous pegmatites both physically and mineralogically. Silica-magnetite±spidote±garnet rock which occurs as relatively barren, discontinuous, foliation- parallel horizons at Fortuna, but as high grade gold ore at Tumco, is interpreted as replacement of calcareous units during the same episode of peraluminous magnatism responsible for the gold vein mineralization. Whole rock and trace element data from pagmatites and aplites of the Fortuna and Tumco areas, together with data from the Gunnery Range batholith of southwestern Arizona, indicate that the magma series (after Keith, 1984) responsible for the gold metallogeny is peraluminous calcic, and is quite rich in sodium.

In this paper, the results of mathematical modeling of casing pipes decontamination from radio-active new mineral forms directly in boreholes using hydrochloric and hydro-silicic-fluoric acids are presented. Modeling for highly and low radioactive coatings on the walls of casing pipes of Anastasievka oil-and-gas deposit was performed using GEMS software, based on the method of Gibbs energy minimization. Calculations have shown that thorianite and goethite, that are present in low-active crusts, detected in casing pipes uplifted from comparatively low depths, are well dissolved in hydrochloric acid, but radiobarite is almost insoluble. For the same acid concentrations, almost all radiobarite of high-active coatings detected in pipes uplifted from considerable depth is dissolved. To evaluate the possibility of decontamination of pipes from radiobarite of low-active coatings, modeling of crust dissolution under the action of H2SiF6 has been performed. The results have shown that for acid concentrations of more than 13 % almost all Ra and Ba are dissolved while all iron and thorium remains in goethite-thorianite solid solution. For the same acid concentration, almost all radiobarite from high-active coatings is dissolved. Therefore, no reagent allows decontamination of pipes from coatings of both types. It seems that successive or simultaneous use of both reagents (HCl and H2SiF6) in certain ratio is required. To clarify this issue, further experimental and model investigations are necessary. The issue of decontamination of casing pipes from galena that is present in high-active crusts also needs to be clarified.
