Introduction In contrast to the general type of crushing mechanism in which the crushing surfaces alternately approach and withdraw from each other, described earlier in this section, and continuous-pressure break¬ers such as rolls and roller mills that will be described in a later chapter, impact crushers load by striking pieces of rock while in free fall and hurling them at high speed against stationary surfaces. Because the impact crusher depends for its effectiveness upon high velocity, wear is greater than in the slower-moving jaw and cone¬type wear parts, and for this reason its use is strictly limited to rela¬tively soft, friable, and sticky rocks that are characteristic of many nonmetallic mineral deposits. A few of these are phosphates, lime¬stone, barite, clay, asbestos rock, and coal. However, several examples of their use on soft lead-zinc and precious metal ores have been known. Although the use of impact crushers is expanding today into the range of ores containing as much as 15-18% silica, Taggart16 set the practical limit at 5%, and in the 1940s and 1950s several installa¬tions in the US and western Europe exceeded the limits of economical maintenance and were quickly superseded by the slower-moving, con¬ventional crushers. A rock that tends to be plastic or bouncy in a jaw or gyratory crusher when the force is applied slowly to reach ultimate strength, may become brittle with rapid loading and thus increase the effective¬ness of the applied forces. For this reason it is to be expected that as the quality of hammers, grates, plates, and cages improves with advances in steel technology, the use of high-speed crushers of this kind will increase. Terminology Modern usage differentiates between the impactor and the hammer mill, the former relying primarily on the impact of hammers (fixed or free-swinging) and secondarily upon pieces striking one another or steel surfaces; the hammer mill relies on both the centrifugal impact force of free-swinging hammers and the attrition and shear action between these hammers and well-placed grates suspended at the bot¬tom just below the hammer circle. The hammer mill, because of its grate discharge, restricts discharge of oversize rock to the grate open¬ing, while at the same time providing a trap for removal of tramp iron or other uncrushables. The impactor discharges free, so generally works with a screen to control product sizes. The question of terminology, impactor vs, hammer mill, creates difficulties because the similarities appear to outweigh the differences by far; if one were to list the similarities in order of importance and then the differences, he would be forced to conclude that they would best be dealt with as a single kind of crusher. Taggart16 gave it four names and added "as it is variously known," but it must be remembered that in 1945 the machine was nearly exclusively of the flailing-hammer type, while today the fixed-hammer rotor is also com¬mon. In this chapter the terms impactor and hammer mill will be used where they seem to apply. It is perhaps unfortunate that this terminology is being confused with rock breaking at the mine, usually with hand-held tools, e.g., the article "High-Energy Impact Rockbreaking" by Grantmyre and Hawkes, CIM Bulletin, August 1975. General Description Impact breakers, impact crushers, and hammer mills accomplish material breaking and reduction primarily through impact action of the material with fixed or free-swinging hammers revolving about a central rotor. The material to be crushed enters through an opening at the top or top side known as the "feed opening" or "hopper opening" and falls into the path of rotation (hammer circle) of the hammers. Initial breakage is accomplished in midair by collision of the dropping feed material with high-speed hammers. The second stage of breakage occurs when the pieces hit plates or breaker bars which line the crusher boxlike frame. Hammer mills rely further on a shearing and attrition action between free-swinging hammers and grid bars or grates at the crusher bottom which restrict discharge of oversize material until it is broken sufficiently to pass through the grid opening. The term hammer is used in reference to the piece which strikes the material, whether it is fixed on the rotor or free-swinging. It

INTRODUCTION A major function of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), Denver Safety and Health Technology Center (DSHTC), Ventilation Branch, is to provide engineering analyses of underground mine¬ ventilation systems for coal, metal, and nonmetal in¬spection departments in accordance with field surveys and data analyses. Health and safety problems such as the control of diesel contaminants, dust, methane, radon, and radon daughters all are dependent upon ventilation. It is necessary for the ventilation engineers at DSHTC to have a complete understanding of the various and highly complex ventilation systems used in the nation's mines. Only through the proper assembly and analysis of data can the engineer determine the causes of prob¬lems and make suitable recommendations. Furthermore, the engineer must have the ability to predict the results of any such recommendations. In the study of the ventilation system at any indi¬vidual mine, it is common practice to collect data on airflow quantities and pressures at key points throughout the mine. However, these data give only a single point¬-in-time view of the system. As the mine develops and progresses, the system undergoes numerous changes; as the mine becomes more extensive, the ventilation re¬quirements increase, and the costs rise. For proper utilization of the available resources, it is necessary for the engineer to have a sound engineering basis for deci¬sions on how best to ventilate the mine. To evaluate the system as a whole, particularly re¬garding possible system changes, it has become necessary to rely on computers to perform the calculations in¬volved in analyzing the network. This chapter sum¬marizes the implementation of such computer capabili¬ties at DSHTC, as well as the services that are available from DSHTC. ANALOG SIMULATIONS AND ANALYSES OF VENTILATION NETWORKS As early as 1954, the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) in Pittsburgh, PA, was using an analog computer as an aid in analyzing ventilation systems. The Mcllroy Fluid Network Analyzer used filament-tube resistance elements and an electrical power supply to simulate mine-ventila¬tion systems electrically. This system is shown in Fig. 1. Analog simulation has proven to be a practical tool, providing fast analyses of complicated problems after the initial setup has been completed. Advancements in electronic technology over the past 24 years have made possible the construction of an analog computer that has streamlined several operating features of the previous machines. The DSHTC Ventilation Branch now has an improved electronic analog computer to assist in the analyses of ventilation systems. General Features As shown in Fig. 2, the analog computer used at the DSHTC Ventilation Branch has three "element" cabi¬ nets, a console, and a printer. The cabinets contain the fan elements and the airway-resistance elements that are used to "program" an analysis problem; each element is independent of the others. The console contains the "patchboard" and the controls necessary to operate the analog computer. The patchboard connects the inde¬pendent elements into the circuit appropriate for simu¬lating the ventilation system. The total system is controlled from a panel on the console, while the value corresponding to each element is set on the individual controls located on the face of each element. The control panel has three visual output displays that give the quantity of flow, the pressure of the output junction with respect to a datum, and the differential pressure across each element. The control panel also allows manual selection of the element to be monitored, or automatic scanning and printing of values for the entire system. Capabilities The analog computer can simulate an existing mine¬-ventilation network. This is accomplished by collecting field data at the mine to give a complete pressure-¬quantity network. Resistance values for each airway branch may be determined from the quantity of flow in the branch and from the pressure differential between the end-point junctions of the branch. The basic rela¬tonship to determine the resistance is expressed as: H=R •Q2 where H is the pressure differential, R is the resistance, and Q is the quantity of air in the flow. After the resistance values are known for all of the airways in the circuit, the elements on the analog com¬puter can be set to the corresponding values. While the mood at the 2013 annual joint meeting between the Pittsburgh Coal Mining Institute of America (127th Annual Meeting) and SME Pittsburgh Section (68th Annual Off-the-Record Meeting) in Canonsburg, PA was subdued following a rocky year in the coal industry, attendance was down only slightly, to 300, and overall, the meeting?s focus was optimistic about the future of coal. The conference began by addressing one of the central challenges of coal mining head-on with a keynote address on the status of safety in the mining industry. Noting that two more U.S. miners had died in 2013 than by the same date in 2012, the National Mining Association?s (NMA) Senior Vice President of Regulatory Affairs Bruce Watzman made a plea for a new approach to safety. He described the NMA CORESafety initiative, a program that promotes proactive safety measures versus a compliance-driven model. CORESafety, described in more detail on pp. 29 of this issue, focuses on developing successful ways to change company cultures of safety and behavior. Other industries that have adopted this approach have seen dramatic drops in fatalities, including the Australian mining industry, which has seen its annual fatality rate drop to nearly zero even while the number of people employed in the industry has soared. The rest of the morning?s sessions explored what is arguably the industry?s biggest challenge right now ? maintaining the social license to operate.

The Troy deposit is located in northwestern Montana, approximately 17 mi south of Troy. The deposit is a stratiform, strata- bound, copper-silver deposit which occurs in the Revett formation of the Proterozoic Belt Supergroup. The Revett formation is approximately 1730 ft thick in the vicinity of the Troy deposit, and is divisible into three units. The upper Revett, approximately 250 ft thick, is the host for the orebody. The Revett represents a deltaic environment. The Troy deposit was discovered by Bear Creek Mining Company in 1 963 during the course of a reconnaissance stream sediment sampling program that was designed to discover strata-bound copper deposits. The deposit is approximately 7500 ft long, 1800 ft wide, and averages 60 ft thick. It is bounded on the north by outcrop, on the east by a post-mineral fault, on the south by diminishing grade and post-mineral faults, and on the west by diminishing grade. Ore reserves are 64 million tons with a grade of 0.76% Cu and 1.58 oz Ag per ton. The mine is presently operating at a production rate of 4.2 million oz of silver and 20,000 tons of copper per year.

Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is one of the most ubiquitous and versatile minerals found in the earth's crust. Its availability, attractive physical properties and relatively low processing cost make CaCO3 the most widely used filler material today. It is mined in three different forms - chalk, limestone and marble. Each physical form of CaCO3 has different qualities due to differences in postdepositional geology. But the chemical composition remains the same, with CaCO3 an inert component of the finished product. In the past, the paper industry largely left CaCO3 by the wayside, as it cannot withstand the acid-based papermaking process. But conversion to an alkaline system by many US mills changed this picture. Carbonate suppliers have put time and effort into research and development, demolishing barriers and creating new possibilities for what is a simple, natural product. By controlling particle size, size distribution and particle charge, the industry uses ground calcium carbonate (GCC) as a performance enhancer and as an extender for more expensive ingredients. It is estimated that the United States uses 3.6 to 4.1 Mt/a (4 to 4.5 million stpy) of CaCO3. Consolidations and mergers are taking place in the industry. Of the 12 major GCC producers in operation nine years ago, seven are left. Mineral Technology (US) is the dominant precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) producer with more than 50 satellite plants worldwide. Other producers include Georgia Marble (French); Franklin Industries (US); OMYA (Swiss); J.M. Huber (US); ECC (English); and Filler Products (US). Global Stone PenRoc (Canada) is the only newcomer. In addition to this group, there are three small producers left in North America, each with a capacity of less than 100 kt/ a (.110,000 stpy). The trade organization operating as the Pulverized Limestone Division of the National Stone Association renamed itself the Pulverized Mineral Division, to increase its membership pool. The US paper industry is a predominant GCC con¬sumer, using approximately 800 kt/a (882,000 stpy) at an approximate cost of $130/t ($1.43/st). European paper mills pioneered alkaline papermaking. In the early 1960s, they began using GCC as filler and soon thereafter added GCC to their coating formulations. A decade later, the North American paper industry followed suit. The conversion from acid to alkaline paper production benefits the economic and performance aspects of the industry. Less pulp is needed, paper machine maintenance and effluent treatment costs are reduced, and sheet strength, opacity and brightness are increased. Perhaps most important to the reader, the sheet is desensitized to ultraviolet light, extending the paper's archival ability. CaCO3 can provide the papermaker with additional control of his paper. For example, PCC has long supplied the tobacco industry with a means to slow down the burning rate of cigarettes. Due to enhanced performance with regard to bulk and opacity, filler PCC use has risen to 1,500 kt/a (1,650 stpy) in the United States, at an approximate price of $130/t ($143/st). The majority is produced onsite at the paper mill, using "satellite plants." This concept reduces freight cost because only quicklime (CaO) is shipped to the mill, not CaCO3 slurry. The future of CaCO3 is encouraging. The amount of natural ground CaCO3 used is expected to double by the year 2005 to approximately 8 Mt (8.8 million st) worldwide. Acid papermaking practices will feel an increasing pressure to convert to an alkaline process as larger volumes of GCC containing paper enter the recycling market. CaCO3 reserves are plentiful. They will supply the ever growing demand for increasingly sophisticated paper. The plastics industry is supplied with almost 900 kt/ a (990,000 stpy) GCC at an annual growth rate of 4% to 5%. The price of a functional, inorganic filler, surface modified for the plastics industry, has an average selling price of $220/t ($243/st). GCC represents the most common filler, creating a product with higher gloss, better dielectric properties, impact resistance, weatherability and shrinkage control. CaCO3-filled plastics surround us - auto hubcaps and dashboards, shower enclosures, floor tiles, wire coatings, microwave dishes and Tupperware. The caulking and sealant industry is an enormous GCC user, with annual consumption requiring 1.13 Mt (1.2 million st) at about $44/t ($48.50/ st). Caulking and sealant may be highly filled with GCC yet undergo no adverse flow effects, with a narrow particle-size-distribution filler decreasing the binder demand. The CaCO3 industry, as well as the carpet industry, are more or less tied to the growth rates of the construction industry. It is estimated that the carpet industry uses some 680 kt/a (750,000 stpy) of GCC at about $25/t ($27.50/st). The paint industry uses approximately 300 kt/a (331,000 stpy) at a 1 % to 1.5% annual growth rate. Here, too, GCC is the dominant filler. It is used to enhance flow characteristics and color uniformity. It also extends costly titanium dioxide, creates sheen and controls roughness, hardness and tack. More CaCO3 should be used in the future as industry shifts from solvent-free or water-based formulations that can accommodate higher GCC volumes. CaCO3 is not imported or exported in any great quantity. Most areas have reserves of their own and the selling price is relatively low. Even so, quality varies from deposit to deposit. As our needs become morespecific, it remains a challenge to provide varying industries with a fitting product.

INTRODUCTION Block caving is distinguished from other types of mining in its requirements that the mineral body to be extracted must cave after a relatively large tabular open¬ing is created underneath it, and that the caving must be predictable and controllable for both operating and safety reasons. A mineral body that caves readily may present special problems with respect to ground support in the mining access openings, where stability, rather than failure, is the desired objective. The complete ex¬traction of a caving block, which may measure 50 to 100 m on a side and 100 to 300 m in height, tends to create a large void, resulting in significant changes in the ground stress system and a migration of rock from all directions toward the void; these events begin very early in the life of the mine and lead to additional spe¬cial problems with respect to control of ground move¬ments in the mine working areas, in the rock adjacent to the caving stope, and on the subsiding surface above the mine. Thus, the mechanics of an undercut-cave operation involve a broad range of geotechnical subject matter, including the determination of the lithostatic earth stresses, the structural properties of a large jointed rock mass, the flow properties of the fragments after caving, the stability of tunnel-like openings, and the stability and displacements of the rock structure (1 to 2 km in size) that surrounds the ore body. The objectives are achieved by in-place measurement of rock properties, laboratory tests, theoretical structural analyses of the related prob¬lems, measurements of structural behavior in and above the mine, and comparison of theoretical predictions with actual performance in order to interpret and refine the predictive capability. Undercut-cave mining (Julin, et al., 1973) differs from most other methods in that the caving is an essen¬tial and inherent part of the excavation process and in¬volves the movements of millions of cubic meters of rock over distances of hundreds of meters, as compared to the gradual 2-m settling of the overburden typical of full¬caving longwall coal mining. Undercut-cave mining may involve a rock mass on the scale of a 1-km diam open¬pit mine, but mining is several times deeper than that in the open-pit mine; furthermore, a large portion of the rock mass is in a failed, rather than a stable, state. Ground-control problems are inevitable in a situa¬tion where ground movements are occurring on such a large scale, and where the rock mass is expected con¬veniently to cave at one location but to be stable at an¬other. To devise effective responses to these ground¬control problems, one needs to know first of all what is happening, not merely at the point where the symptoms are observed, but more broadly with respect to the be¬havior of the entire mine rock-mass structure over the total area of extraction, including the effects on the sur¬face as well as those underground. Monitoring structural behavior on this scale would require a sizable group of people, if they attempted to measure all the significant mining-induced changes of ground displacement and pressure, even on a 100-m grid of points. The practical approach is to conduct the mea¬surements activity by a judicious sampling, making in¬termittent, concentrated efforts in selected areas of lim¬ited extent to study problems of immediate importance; simultaneously a minimum level of surveillance is main¬tained over the total structure to delineate long-term be¬havior trends in the major structure, which provide the baseline reference data that are so essential for interpre¬tive purposes. Mine-structure behavior depends not only on the mine extraction configuration and sequence, but on the rock structural properties and how they change from one location to another in the mine. Increasing attention is being given to determinations of rock strength and de¬formation by performing mechanical properties tests in place and in the laboratory, and by drawing inferences from the mapping of geologic structure in mine openings as they are driven and from the logging of cores ob¬tained from exploration drilling that may be performed primarily for delineating ore reserves. Monitoring of mine-structure behavior and inter¬preting it in terms of the growing excavations and the structural properties of the rocks have significant im¬pacts on designing the major undercut-cave operations of undercutting and drawing the ore, supporting the ac¬cess openings, and controlling surface subsidence. The purpose of this chapter is to call attention to the com¬mon ground-control problems encountered in undercut¬cave mining, to relate them to the mining process, and to explain the geomechanical approaches to analyzing these problems with emphasis on methods that are most readily available to the mine staff. UNDERCUTTING, CAVING, AND DRAWING A distinguishing characteristic of an undercut-caving method of extraction is the objective that the rock mass fails of its own weight in a predictable and controllable manner, after it is undercut by excavating a tabular¬shaped void, horizontal or inclined. Induced or forced caving refers to procedures that may be resorted to when the ore will not self-cave over the desired span. Block caving, panel caving, and mass caving are terms used to denote the particular sequence of undercutting and ex¬tracting the total area of the ore body on a single min¬ing level. The discussion herein is not specialized to any of these variations; the word block as used does not imply anything as to sequence. CREATING THE UNDERCUT A common undercutting method is to drive a series of drifts and blast the intervening pillars. Theoretical structural analysis and practical experience show that ground-support problems in the undercutting drifts and in underlying access openings as well (the same princi¬ple applies even if undercutting is done by belling out drawpoints from the slusher drifts) are minimized by retreat-mining across the undercut slot according to a sequence such that the growing undercut area retains a

Centromin is a Mining Company owned by the peruvian government. It's considered as one of the major mining and metallurgical center in Latin America. The main operations of the Company are: Mining, Concentration, Smelting and Refining of several metals (Figure 1). At present, dentromin operates with six mining units: Cerro de Pasco, Morococha, Casapalca, San Cristobal, Yauricocha and Cobriza; which are located in the Central part of the country between 2 100 m and up to 4 800 m above sea level. The installed capacity of concentration all together ranges about 14 000 tons per day. There's also a metallurgical plant in La Oroya with a production capacity of 220 000 tons per year of refined metal. The production of the Company is diversified in twenty two (22) final pro- ducts, whose major productions are : copper, lead, zinc, silver, gold, tungg ten and bismuth. The minor products are: arsenic, antimony, cadmiun, teluriun, sulphuric acid, indium, selenium, etc.

MINERAL EXPLORATION 'The Function of Exploration Mineral exploration aims at locating the presence of economic deposits and establishing their nature, shape, and grade. As all ore bodies are finite, exploration is essentially the lifeblood of the mining industry. It is divided into two phases, reconnaissance and target investigation. It involves geological mapping, geophysical prospecting (aerial and ground or both), geochemical surveys, prospect drilling, and/or exploratory under-ground workings. Successful exploration is followed by development drilling, mine development, and eventually operation. In underground mining, the term "ore" is applied rather loosely to metalliferous rock that can be profit- ably mined, but nonmetallic industrial minerals and energy related materials constitute a large and growing portion of the tonnage extracted by underground methods each year. It is appropriate, therefore, to consider exploration as the search for any useful substance occurring in the earth or in the oceans that is of sufficient value as to volume, grade, chemical and physical com- position, and location as to make extraction by mining commercially profitable for the investment required. The Selection Process The search for ore includes hundreds of mineral commodities. The more successful exploration organizations tend to restrict the search to the mineral commodities for which they have strong exploration expertise and which have a high probability of being concentrated in areas open to exploration and development in sufficient volume, grade, and proximity to the surface to warrant the large expenditures of risk capital in finding an ore body. Special expertise is needed to engage in mineral exploration and development for the extended periods required for success. Individual prospectors continue to discover mineral occurrences, but it generally takes an organization with strong financial resources to carry the exploration process forward to the point of developing "ore." Still greater corporate resources in the form of management, engineering, and sales capability are needed to develop an ore body into an operating mine. In the past, companies other than those engaged in mining rarely conducted exploration, since they lacked the technical skills and know-how to bring a mine to fruition. A notable trend in recent years has been the success of other resource-oriented firms, such as petroleum companies, that have not only acquired the necessary skills to engage in exploration for hard minerals, but are doing so on a far more intensive scale than known in the industry heretofore. The desire to diversify from increasingly regulated oil and gas, the potential for the discovery of a bonanza, and the large scale of mining projects for these capital-intensive firms are the attractions. US government and certain international organizations, such as the United Nations, have fielded sizable exploration programs in the past decade on behalf of Third World countries wherein many of the world's higher grade deposits and scarce mineral resources are located. The level of overall mineral exploration in the industry is, regrettably, closely geared to the business cycle. Accelerated search during the periods of strong demand, shortages, and high prices, together with the long lead times necessary to develop mineral finds, often creates surges in supply which invariably are followed by a collapse in prices. The trend is, therefore, to exploration funding by larger better-endowed firms having the staying power to weather the cyclical nature of mining. Tax incentives, tariff policies, and other incentives have a decided impact on the level and nature of exploration. Surface mining regulations and environmental forces have fostered a renewed interest in under- ground development despite the lower average costs of surface mining. Spiraling inflation has caused mining costs to outpace prices for many mineral substances. Organizations increasingly are directing their search away from high- grade but limited tonnage occurrences toward low-grade disseminated bulk tonnages amenable to mining on a vast scale. Mining continues, therefore, to grow even more capital-intensive with half-billion-dollar mine-mill- smelter complexes now commonplace, compared with the hundred-million-dollar projects of a decade ago. Reconnaissance Exploration Having elected to search for specific mineral commodities, the exploration company narrows its focus to a reconnaissance of those regions offering the best potential. A working hypothesis which is constantly up- dated concerning the geologic controls for ore occurrence guides the search. The possibilities for discovery are best in areas of existing mines and known ore bodies, where the probabilities are high for additional ore occurrences. In such areas, published data on the trends and geologic controls of known mineral occurrences aid the search. Even in some remote territories, a variety of geologic data is available to the explorationist. The major sources of basic geologic data are the libraries of the US Geological Survey (USGS), the state geological surveys, the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers (AIME), the US Bureau of Mines, and various institutions such as Colorado School of Mines. Overseas, virtually all of the countries have their own geologic survey groups which are associated directly, or indirectly, with their respective ministries of mines. The objective of reconnaissance exploration is to narrow the search by pinpointing target areas having interesting mineralization. These favorable areas are then investigated in detail to delineate potential ore bodies.

"The 35th Annual American Mining Hall of Fame Awards Banquet and Fundraiser, sponsored by the Mining Foundation of the Southwest (MFSW), will be held at the JW Marriott Tucson Starr Pass Resort & Spa on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2017. This year, the Foundation will honor one living Hall of Fame inductee, two Medal of Merit recipients, four honorees from Mining’s Past and an Industry Partner for their respective contributions to the mining industry.Gary J. Goldberg will be the 2017 Hall of Fame Inductee and will serve as the keynote speaker at the awards banquet. Goldberg was appointed president and chief executive officer and joined the board of directors of Newmont Mining Corp. in March 2013. Prior to this appointment, he served numerous companies in key positions including Rio Tinto Minerals, US Borax and Coal & Allied Industries. At every appointment, he was able to improve safety concerns and reduce injury rates. While serving as chairman of the National Mining Association, Goldberg launched the CORESafety initiative and US Borax was the first mining company to receive the California Governor’s Environmental and Economic Award.The Medal of Merit will be awarded to John C. Lacy, a shareholder of DeConcini McDonald Yetwin & Lacy, P.C. and a director of the Global Law Center at the University of Arizona’s Law School. Lacy’s law practice concentrates on mining and public land law and encompasses transactional and title consideration involving acquisition of mineral rights. He played a crucial role in the revisions to the mining law of the Republic of Bolivia and the English translation of the mining laws and regulations of Mexico. This study aims to identify individual elements and to gain an understanding of the surface reaction mechanisms, as well as the properties of precipitated pyrite particles observed during the hydrothermal formation of an ore deposit. A combination of X-ray diffraction (XRD), air annealing in a furnace, scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was applied to investigate the crystal structure and identify the individual elements, permanence, transformation and chemical/electronic properties of such pyrite.

Introduction In 1987, the US economy continued to grow steadily, reaching an annual rate of $4.6 trillion in the last quarter. The value of domestically processed mineralbased materials rose slightly to $250 billion. The value of US metals rose sharply to more than $7 billion. Industrial minerals rose slightly to $18 billion recycled scrap was valued at $4 billion. Metal prices rose sharply toward year-end. A number of mining and metal companies experienced increased profitability, fostering more optimism about the future. Consumer demand strongly affects mining because the US economy is relatively saturated with long-lived products. Consumer, mortgage, and federal debt continue to rise. 244 million citizens already possess 170 million licensed motor vehicles and 100 million dwelling units. New car production fell 9% to 7.1 million units, but truck and bus production rose 9% to 3.8 million units. New housing starts fell 10% to 1.6 million units. Excess productive capacity exists not only in the US, but also in many other countries. Consequently, the US mineral industry is encountering stiff competition from others, as well as increasing competition from newer engi¬neered materials. Domestic production of plastics rose 9% to 25 Mt (27 million st) - on a volume basis, double all metals. Some 7% of petroleum goes to make petrochemicals including plastics. Imports of nonfuel mineral-based materials in 1987 were valued at $37 billion and exports at $24 billion. Imports supplied a significant proportion of total US consumption of several important mineral materials, including many classified as strategic and critical. In December, the Congress mandated that any major changes in stockpile goals be made only by law, and that the Department of Defense submit annually detailed stockpile supply/demand analyses. Concern about apartheid in South Africa continued, resulting in increasing interest about chromium, manganese, platinum-group metals, cobalt, vanadium, and gold. The National Critical Materials Council continued to monitor the US materials position. The Defense Production Act, authorizing priorities and allocations, supply expansions, voluntary agreements, and the National Defense Executive Reserve continues in effect through Sept. 30, 1989. Under the DPA, the US Bureau of Mines maintains the Emergency Minerals Administration. Further consultations were held with Canada to strengthen the North American defense industrial base. Coal production, 60% from open pits, rose 2% to 825 Mt (910 million st) valued at $21 billion. Nearly four-fifths was burned to generate 56% of US electricity. Exports included 42 Mt (51 million st) of metallurgical coal and 24 Mt (27 million st) of steam coal, with a total value of $3.3 billion. Domestic petroleum production fell 5% to 480 Mm' (3 billion bbl). Uranium mining, including recovery from phosphates, fell 4% to 5.9 kt (6500 st). Nonfuel minerals Major metals: Raw steel production - a major consumer of many minerals - rose 7% to 79 Mt (87 million st). Sixty years ago, underground coal mining was the most hazardous job in the United States. Roof falls killed about 100 miners every year, more than all other causes put together. Fast forward half a century to 2016, and the first year ever with zero roof fall fatalities. Just three miners were killed by roof falls during the following six years. To understand how this historic goal was achieved, this study analyzed hundreds of roof fall fatality reports covering five decades. It found that the immediate effect of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 (Coal Act) was to reduce the riskiest activities, like needlessly going under unsupported roof. Other hazards, like large roof falls, required technological developments before they were brought under control. Roof control plans, which the U.S. Bureau of Mines had been advocating since the 1920s, fostered the necessary improvements in both the safety culture and the mining technology.

"This paper presents experiences gained from the construction of the Lake Mead Intake No. 3 project. The 4.7 km long tunnel was excavated with a hybrid TBM (able to operate in both closed and open mode). The tunnel crossed metamorphic and sedimentary rocks under a hydrostatic pressure of about 14 bar. During the excavation of the tunnel the TBM encountered difficult ground conditions caused by a combination of high water pressure, poor ground quality and locally low depth of cover. The adverse conditions required the TBM to be driven in closed mode at very high support pressures (10 – 15 bar) for approximately 60% of the tunnel length. The paper summarizes the main problems encountered during TBM excavation and analyzes the evolution of the TBM parameters over the entire tunnel length. INTRODUCTION The Lake Mead Intake No. 3 project is located approximately 30 km away from the city of Las Vegas in Nevada, USA. The project consists of the construction of a deeper third intake for the biggest reservoir in the United States, which is formed by the Hoover Dam. The construction of the new intake was required due to the constant drawdown of the lake level (more than 40 m in the past 20 years) and the consequent risk that the shallower intakes 1 & 2 may run dry. The project included the fabrication and positioning on the lake bottom of an intake riser, the excavation and lining of a 185 m deep shaft and construction of a 4.7 km long tunnel. One peculiarity of the project is that the water table is located about 140 m above the tunnel elevation (i.e. corresponding to a hydrostatic pressure of 14 bar at the current lake level). The tunnel was constructed using a tunnel boring machine (TBM) able to operate in both open and closed mode (Mc Donald & Burger, 2009). The present paper focuses on the TBM tunneling experience gained from the Lake Mead Intake No. 3 tunnel. The TBM excavation started on December 27, 2011 and finished on December 10, 2014 with the breakthrough to the intake structure at the bottom of Lake Mead. GEOLOGICAL CONDITIONS The assessment of the ground conditions encountered during construction was mainly based upon qualitative descriptions of the tunnel face conditions (during open mode operations) and analysis of the extracted muck (during closed mode operations)."

The "Old Reliable" four million pound blast in March of 1972 marked the opening, as far as is known, of serious efforts to commercialize the In Situ concept. That was a coyote shot, and it was followed by three blasts at McAlester Fuel's "Zonia" operation which were surface hole shots. As the only individual who had a principal part in all four shots, it seems to be appropriate to present experiences in the developments and evolutions of the in Situ method of ore extraction. Some of the problems will be described, along with proposals for management of such projects in the future.

Attendees at December?s Arizona SME Section Conference at the Hilton El Conquistador Resort outside of Tucson, AZ were feeling optimistic and ready to get to work after a year of steady growth and recovery in the mining industry. During the two-day event (Dec. 5-6, 2010) and the preceding American Mining Hall of Fame banquet and awards ceremony, the focus was on copper, worldwide population growth and regulatory pressures, with several smart new projects featured alongside updates to traditional large-scale copper development projects. Keynote speaker Timothy Snider, chair of the University of Arizona?s Lowell Institute for Mineral Resources, hit the mood of cautious optimism when he analyzed the global demand for resources, using the case example of copper. Over the next 20 years, he said, the world?s population is expected to grow to 9.2 billion and the average annual per capita copper use is expected to rise from 2.2 to 4.5 kg (5 to 10 lb). The increase in demand will provide tremendous opportunity for mining companies, he said, but cautioned that the opportunities are balanced by negative influences on demand and pressures on supply. While demand for copper is currently growing, Snider noted that there were significant downward pressures on demand as well. These included a western world that is overbuilt, in-creasing use of substitute materials in new construction and the rise of wireless devices. He also noted new regulatory pressures, and pointed out that resource development now had to occur within a context of sustainability on several levels.

Much has been published concerning the subject of coal preparation as related to electric power generation however it is always a most vital topic for both utilities and coal producers, It also constitutes a field of study that is never finished since new concepts and changing demands continually require altered perspectives. One graphic illustration that has been used to emphasize the rapidity with which times are changing is the fact that during World War I, a station that consumed 1000 tons per day was looked upon as a large central station, while today some single generators require 1500 tons during the same period, For further emphasis, at that time a 20,000 horsepower turbo-generator was a mighty large machine; today, a unit of this size is planned for driving the boiler water feed pump required for a single large main unit. During the past ten years alone, electric utilities have more than doubled their percentage of coal consumed as compared to the total market. They now account for approximately 40% of the United States consumption and one-third of all production including export, Conversely, approximately 70% of all U. S. steam electric generation is by coal and this percentage is expected to increase. It is further predicted that utility consumption will increase from the current 160,000,000 tons per year to between 400 and 500 million tons in 1975 which is approximately equal to todays total production

The adsorption of O-isopropyl-N-ethylthionocarbamate (IPETC) and O-isobutyl-N-ethoxycarbonylthionocarbamate (IBECTC) on chalcocite, chalcopyrite and pyrite has been studied using UV and in-situ FTIR~ATR spectroscopy. Thionocarbamates were found -to adsorb strongly on chalcocite at pH 4-10, but consider-ably less on chalcopyrite and pyrite. The FTIR spectra show that the surface species of thiono-carbamates are bonded to metal atoms on the mineral surfaces. However, at high concentrations, IBECTC also forms physically-adsorbed species. Adsorption of these thionocarbamates cannot remove or prevent the formation of sulfoxy oxidation products on pyrite, unlike the case with the xanthate-pyrite system. This finding may account for the observed flotation selectivity of these reagents against pyrite. The spectroscopic information is compared with flotation test results.

The feasibility of recovering cyanide and copper from a gold mill barren solution was evaluated in a small A VR pilot plant. The campaign lasted 64 hours, during which time about 4,000 L of gold mill barren solution were processed. The results showed that A VR is an effective technology for recovering cyanide and copper from barren solutions. Under the best conditions, the copper precipitation and the cyanide volatilization attained 94% and 98%, respectively. Using 5 MNaOH as the absorbent, practically all the HCN gas was recovered in the form of a concentrated NaCN solution containing 70 g/L free CN. Basic engineering design parameters applicable to a large-scale operation were obtained, including the Henry's Law constant and the mass transfer coefficient for HCN gas.

Coarse silica flotation from intermediate pebble (IP) product has been carried out a pilot plant Dual Extraction Column (DEC) at an operational phosphate mine in Central Florida. The solids feed rate ranged from 4.16 – 5.3 TPH while the amine dosages ranged from 0.32 – 0.93 lb/T. The optimum amine dosage when using recycled process water was deter-mined to be 0.6 lb/T. With a feed containing 40-45 BPL and 38-45% insol, the results show that the IP can be upgraded to 56-61 BPL and insol of 16-22% at 85-90% BPL recovery. The results show that the DEC is an effective device for flotation of coarse silica from the IP. The advantages of upgrading the IP prior blending with the pebble are presented and discussed.

In the U.S.S.R. three of the world's major-known phosphate deposits are located. These have an estimated reserve of 2,600 million short tons of contained phosphorus. The best known lies in the "Khibiny Massif', an alkalaic rock formation some 600 square miles in area with mountain peaks rising to an altitude of 3300 ft above the surrounding terrain. Location and Climate The Khibiny Massif lies north of the Arctic Circle in the Kola Penin-sula, 100 miles south southeast of Murmansk, at a latitude of 67° 30' north and a longitude of 35° 30' east. It is serviced by rail from Murmansk and Leningrad (900 rail miles south). Figure 1. The phosphate operations are centered about the two cities of Apatity and Kirovsk. The former has a population of 35,000 and is on the Leningrad¬Murmansk railway. Kirovsk, 15 miles to the east, is now a city of 85,000. The region is at the limit of the tree line with most of the ground cover typical tundra. The mean annual temperature is -4°C and, in a normal year, precipitation occurs on 240 days. Because the temperature does not exceed freezing for 300 days each year, virtually all of the precipitation is snow. The two towns are nestled between mountains and, because of the weather, extensive avalanche control systems incorporating major engineering construction have been introduced to divert snow slides away from the populated areas. General Kirovsk was first settled in 1923 and the apatite occurrences were recognized shortly after. In 1933, the first concentrator for the recovery of the mineral was completed, producing in its first year of operation 170,000 tons of concentrate. With the growth and demand for phosphate in the U.S.S.R., a second concentrator was erected at Apatity. It calve on stream in 1963. Because of the severe climate, in the early days mining was limited to 85 days per year. With the introduction of new techniques and improved mining methods, the season has been extended to 115 days.
