Carbon-in-leach (CIL) is conventionally used in gold processing operations when preg robbing components are present in the ore. The CIL process is becoming attractive even in other situations when preg robbing is not a factor. This article discusses the situations in which the CIL circuit can be applied. The results of leach-carbon-in-pulp (CIP) and CIL circuits at Newmont Gold's Mill No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 are presented for comparison: Mill No. 4 was initially designed for a throughput of 4.1 kt/d (4500 stpd). It is presently operating at an average throughput of 6.6 kt/d (7300 stpd) without significant changes to the original design. The design considerations of the Mill No. 4 CIL circuit are discussed. The design of any processing facility represents a series of decisions. The final design options should ultimately be resolved based on economic as well as technical considerations. Every design decision represents some sort of compromise. From the designer's view point, these decisions are made with the conviction that the final product represents the most prudent long-term expenditure. The design throughput rate is a decision reflecting a maximum return for the capital and operating costs that the plant will incur over the life of the mineral resource. The result is a plant that is not operator proof or maintenance free because it would be too costly to build. Based on the results of these studies, a new calcium carbonate treatment program was developed that shows excellent Inhibition characteristics and Is not sensitive to calcium hardness.

"The north segment of the Zizhi Tunnel that consists of twin tunnels was excavated at a shallow depth in soft ground using the Shallow Tunneling Method. Based on continuous field measurements, the development histories of surface settlement were analyzed first. The observed development process could be roughly divided into three stages and the influence of river was evidenced. Transverse and longitudinal surface settlements above the twin tunnels were then fitted with empirical models. The obtained trough width parameters in transverse and longitudinal direction (it and il) and the volume loss (VLs) were presented and discussed. Additionally, surface settlement was compared with the crown settlement. The relationship between surface and crown settlement behaved in two different ways inside and outside the river-affected region. The findings in this project give references for predicting surface settlements in similar tunneling condition. INTRODUCTION Nowadays tunnel construction has become a major way of utilizing underground space in many large cities. The ground deformation will be inevitably induced in the tunneling process. Engineers should always be careful about excessive deformation that may damage adjacent structures. For shallow tunnels, controlling ground deformation turns to be more risky. Since soil arching is not completely formed in the shallow tunneling, settlements can easily develop from tunnel crown to ground surface.A conventional tunneling method named Shallow Tunneling Method (STM) has been developed and widely applied to constructed shallow tunnels in China. The major difference between this method and the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) is whether considering self-supporting capacity of surrounding ground or not. In order to reduce the disturbance of surrounding soils, several guidelines are highlighted in this method, including advanced pipe forepoles, strict grouting, short excavation length, strong support, quick closure and frequent measurements (Fang 2012). Nevertheless, the ground deformation is still hard to control and becomes a concerned problem, mainly because ground settlement has some regional features and largely depends on the detailed excavation methods (bench cut method, multiple heading method, etc.) and ground condition (sand, clay, decomposed rock, etc.)."

The term kaolin is used here, in a commercial sense, for near- white clay deposits which are dominantly comprised of the mineral kaolinite, or for products refined from such deposits. The term "china clay" has been used in the past as a synonym for kaolin, a reference to its first being mined some 3000 years ago at a hill near Jauchau Fu, Jiangxi Province, China as a porcelain raw material. The name kaolin was derived from the Chinese Kauling, which means high ridge. For most modem industrial applications kaolin must be extensively refined and processed from the crude state to enhance whiteness, purity, and other important commercial characteristics. After such processing, kaolin ranks as one of the most valuable of industrial clays, and it is used to some extent in most manufactured consumer products. In 1991, the United States alone produced kaolin valued at $1,072,366,000. It is applied very widely as a pigment, filler, coater, extender, ceramic raw material, catalyst base, electrical insulator, and pharmaceutical. Some more prominent uses include paper filling and coating; paint, plastic, adhesive, and ink pigment; rubber reinforcing agent; ceramic raw material for porcelain, dinnerware, tile, and enamels; catalyst base for petroleum cracking and auto exhaust emission catalytic control devices; cosmetics base; and digestive coating remedy. Those properties of kaolin clay which make it suited to these applications are related to its physical, optical, mineralogical, and chemical nature.

The Fortitude skarn near Battle Mountain, NV is currently one of the largest producing gold skarns in the world. It contains about 11 Mt (12 million st) of minable ore grading 5.14 g/t (0.149 oz per st) and is the distal portion of a continuous skarn system in the Copper Canyon area centered on the Eocene Copper Canyon granodiorite porphyry. Calcsilicate compositions, opaque mineralogy, and the high gold grades are atypical of other base metal skarns (iron, Fe; copper, Cu; lead-zinc, Pb-Zn; or tungsten, W). The Copper Canyon skarn is systematically zoned from a garnet (AD 70-100) dominant, pyroxene (HD 20-45) subordinate zone, with major Cu mineralization, adjacent to the intrusive (West ore body), to a pyroxene (HD20-100) dominant, garnet (AD90-100 cores. AD 30-60 rims)subordinate assemblage, with major Au, near the distal marble front (Fortitude ore body). An extensive biotite ± diopsidic pyroxene ± kspar alteration halo surrounds the pyroxene > garnet gold-bearing skarn and represents the early stages of metasomatic alteration. Retrograde alteration is limited in areal extent and intensity, and consists of actinolite, chlorite, quartz, and prehnite. Economic gold mineralization begins in the pyroxene > garnet zone and continues to the marble front, a distance of 1 to 1.5 km (0.6 to 0.9 miles), respectively, from the plutonic contact. The opaque mineralogy in this gold zone includes pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, marcasite, minor chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, argentite, hessite, hedleyite, volnyskite, and native bismuth and gold. The pyrite-pyrrhotite geothermometer yields temperatures that range from 450° C to 300°C (842° F to 582° F) and the electrum-argentite-sphalerite geothermometer yields temperatures which range from 290°C (554° F) at the marble front to about 420°C (788° F) more proximal to the intrusive. Log fS2 calculations from the sulfide assemblages yield values near - 10 with log fO2 values of about -30, in a solution of near neutral pH (5-6). Calculations of metal solubility suggest that the metals were transported as chloride complexes in the proximal skarn but that bisulfide complexes were predominant within the distal gold skarn. Relatively low oxidation states buffered by the carbonaceous to argilliceous, calcareous protolith and subsequent ferrous iron-rich skarn assemblages appear to have increased the gold carrying capacity of this large hydrothermal system.

INTRODUCTION Coal mine entry intersections are high-risk areas for roof falls due to inherently wide roof spans, excessive stress, and variable intersection shapes resulting from breakthrough misalignments. Statistics from underground coal mines reveal that a high percentage of injuries occurs from roof and rib falls in entry intersections (Peng, 1980). The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, is conducting a field research project to investigate failure modes surrounding underground coal mine entry intersections. The research objectives are to (1) develop a method to determine failure modes and stress-displacement relations around coal mine intersections and (2) develop engineering guidelines and empirical relationships for use in designing safer coal mine entry intersections. The basic approach to achieve the objectives is to instrument and monitor intersections before, during, and after intersection development in order to determine contributing parameters, such as in situ stresses, stress changes, strata movement, geology, physical properties, and mining sequence, that may influence the short- and long-term stability of the intersection and adjacent entries. This paper describes a rock mechanics instrumentation program, data analyses, and a comparison of two case studies conducted at two underground mines, designated as "A" and "B", in the Illinois Coal Basin. The instrumentation plans and data collected during development and long-term monitoring of four-way intersections and adjoining entries are presented. Data analyses of pre- and post-mining roof stress, pillar loading, strata movement, roof bolt loading, and geologic features are included. INTERSECTION FAILURE MECHANISM The region surrounding an entry intersection is characterized by different failure criteria than the region surrounding a single entry. Stresses induced during intersection development may result in a high incidence of roof and rib failures. Various numerical modeling techniques have been used to evaluate the failure modes surrounding intersections (Gercek, 1982; Chugh et al., 1975). Numerical modeling techniques include problems associated with the analysis of post-failure behavior, provision for different horizontal stresses (i.e., 01 f 021, and determination of inputs required for any non-elastic behavior. It seems likely that more sophisticated failure criteria, based on actual field data, are needed. The Bureau of Mines has conducted an extensive instrumentation program to investigate actual intersection failure mechanisms and to provide an improved understanding of stresses and deflections using beam and plate theories. Beam theory is not applicable to analyzing intersections (Wright et al., 1964); however, it can be used to explain roof deflection and failure (shear and flexure) of adjacent entries and to provide an improved understanding of stress changes and displacements as the entries, crosscuts, and intersection are developed (Hanna et al., 1985). Beam theory may be used for entries when the roof length is twice the width. When the length is less than twice the width (as in intersections), the roof must be analyzed as a three-dimensional problem, and stress and deflection calculations are based on flat plate theory (Adler and Sun, 1976). The confined-core theory (Wilson, 1972) hypothesizes that within a typical pillar, two regions exist: a confined-core region where the horizontal confining pressure is uniform and approximately equal to the overburden pressure, and a yield zone where the vertical pressure increases from nearly zero at the rib to a pressure peak at the boundary of the yield zone. The strength of coal in the yield zone ranges from nearly zero at the rib to nearly full strength at the confined core. Attrition of activated carbon in either the carbon-in-pulp (CIP) or carbon-in-leach (CIL) method of gold extraction can lead to, at the least, loss of expensive carbon that has to be made up, and at the worst, loss of both the carbon and any gold that was attached to it. Carbon attrition therefore represents a significant factor in both the efficiency and cost of the extraction process, and efforts to reduce attrition through process and equipment selection pay dividends. In evaluating carbon attrition potential, one would note that an individual carbon particle is in jeopardy virtually any time it is in motion. Since the motivators of this motion are primary centrifugal pumps, the purpose of this paper is to review the current styles of these pumps now in use and to examine their performance in minimizing carbon attrition.

Variations in designs between belt cleaner systems are so wide that it is impractical to establish a dimensional stan- dard. The number of variables that affect the efficiency of belt cleaners is too great to assume a required number or style of cleaners for broad classifications of bulk solids or typical applications. The amount of carryback remaining on the belt is more dependent upon the characteristics of the bulk solid and the physical parameters of the conveyor system than it is on tonnage of material conveyed. Therefore, a performance-based standard is proposed. Three levels of cleaning performance are proposed: • Level I cleaning is general specified when concerns about carryback are not critical. Cleaning systems normally associated with achieving a Level I performance are single or double cleaner systems with one-piece blades undergoing poor to average maintenance. Frequent cleaning of the carryback that falls from the return run will likely be required. • Level II cleaning is generally specified when carry- back is of concern but does not create a safety or environmental problem. Cleaning systems normally associated with Level I1 performance are multiple cleaner systems with segmented blades undergoing the manufacturer's specified maintenance. Regular but infrequent cleaning of the carryback that falls from the return run will likely be required. • Level III cleaning is generally specified when con- cerns about carryback are critical. Concerns range from safety to environmental to product contamination. Cleaning systems normally associated with achieving a Level 111 performance are multiple cleaner systems in conjunction with at least one low- volume water spray. Scheduled inspection and the manufacturer's specified maintenance would have to be performed to maintain a high level of cleaning performance. Difficult-to-clean bulk materials may require the use of a washbox system with multiple cleaners using a combination of low-volume eater sprays to lubricate the cleaners and high-volume sprays to keep the washbox and discharge piping freely flowing. Further addition of a water and sludge recycling system reduces the amount of water that ends up in the product to a negligible amount. Very infrequent cleaning of the carryback that falls from the return run will be required. PURPOSE The purpose of this proposal is to propose a standard method for specifying belt cleaner systems based on user expectations and equipment performance over time. DEFINITION In bulk solids handling by conveyor belt, carryback is the material that adheres to the belt after the belt discharges its cargo. PROPOSED STANDARD Required Basic Good Practices There are a number of basic design and operating principles that are good practice for the selection, installation, and maintenance of belt cleaning systems on conveyors in order to achieve "standard belt cleaning performance over time. 1. The Belt Cleaning System shall be designed to meet the performance requirements based on the worst operating conditions and worst bulk solids proper- ties that are expected. 2. Each conveyor discharge point shall be designed to readily accept the manufacturer's recommended minimum number of belt cleaners. In addition, the discharge chute shall be designed to accept, with minor modifications, at least one additional cleaner if it is required.

Digital photography combined with three dimensional models of topography, mining operations and restoration plans can lead to extremely realistic images and animations of the current and future states of a mine or quarry. The amount of work and the time required for the successful modeling of a mine and its restoration plan are surprisingly low nowadays. All this means that the visual impact of mining and quarrying operations can be easily assessed using common computer hardware and some dedicated software packages. LAVA Mining and Quarrying SA is a company committed to strive continuously for the highest possible environment protection at the company?s quarries. The pozzolanic rock quarry located at Xylokeratia is one of the company?s quarries on the island of Milos and the subject of the study presented in this paper. A thorough restoration plan of the Xylokeratia quarry is being completed by the company. For its purposes, a complete visual impact assessment study was performed at the Department of Geotechnology and Environmental Engineering of the Technological Education Institute of Western Macedonia. The procedures used in this study and the produced visual results are presented in this paper.

The Bureau of Mines is currently investigating the geophysical application of Tomography to monitor leachate during in-situ mining. Determining the location of the leachate is important for both economic and environmental reasons. By analyzing a sequence of tomographic images, we can determine where highly permeable/fractured regions are located and hence, major flow paths. Since BOMTOM (Bureau Of Mines TOMography - Tomographic Reconstruction Program), and BOMCRATR (Bureau Of Mines Curved RAy Tomography - Tomographic Reconstruction Program) are sensitive to user-selected ray path arrival times, we are also investigating the use of neural networks to automate the process of recognizing this feature. This paper presents a technique for detecting fracture zones and their orientations in a region between two boreholes, by using a motion analysis study of a sequence of tomographic images. It also addresses the need for an automated/unbiased method to pick crosshole seismic arrival times using a trained neural network. In exploration geophysics, the picking of first break arrivals represents a pattern recognition task. The neural net paradigm has proved to be a good method of solving this type of task. To pick the first arrival peak of a trace, the network is trained with a set of known (user selected) first arrival peaks by creating a binary image of a set of traces. Once trained, the neural net correctly picked first arrivals of the remaining traces in the set.

The Guasare Coal Project is located a short distance from Lake Maracaibo, in the Northwestern region of Venezuela. In 1987, Carbones del Guasare, a joint venture comprised of Carbozulia, ACC Venezuela, a subsidiary of ARCO, and AGIPCoal of ENI Group, Italy, was formed to develop the Guasare coal reserves for world markets. Drilling with the Venezuelan state of Zulia has indicated a coal resource of over 6 billion metric tons. Further exploration has delineated the Guasare deposit as an area particularly suited for cost-effective surface mining. The calculated mineable reserves of this area (300 million metric tons) and the coal quality characteristics are based on extensive core drilling programs.

INTRODUCTION The process of froth flotation as a means of upgrading the quality of coal by removing water and/or ash and/or pyrite has been receiving increasing attention since the 1960's by the world-wide coal industry. Historically, coal preparation practice has involved the use of primarily gravity based separation techniques, screening, and/or water washing in removing the larger fragments of inert material from coarse raw feed coal. The preparation, handling, and cleaning of raw coal finer than 500 micrometers was deliberately avoided. Most often the fine coal that was produced would be judiciously incorporated into the bulk of the larger sized cleaned coal product or simply discarded. Since the 1960's and accelerating in the 19701s, the desirability of performing some type of coal cleaning or upgrading on the finer raw coal feed materials has been increasing. There are several apparent industrial incentives for implementing fine coal ((500 urn) processing alternatives including the gradually increasing value of the normally lost fine coal product; the additional amounts of fine coal being produced due to changes in mining techniques; the need to appropriately dewater and upgrade fine coal streams in order to meet increasingly stringent environmental regulations on water quality. storage of fines, etc.; the increasing need to lower undesired sulfur and ash contents in some coal end-use applications; and the increasing development of speciality coal use processes that require inherently finer and cleaner coal particles such as in gasification, liquefaction, fuel injection, etc. Looking at the over 70 years of mineral oriented fine particle separation successes at the industrial level, the use of froth flotation in fine coal would also seem to be a natural process to utilize at the industrial level. In the world of strictly mineral processing technology and, more importantly in the world of mineral commodity economics, there are clearly a number of advantages to using froth flotation that are well documented and universally accepted. These include: the relatively low capital and space requirements required when compared to other process options available to upgrade minerals; the extreme flexibility inherent to the froth flotation process both with regard to throughput and differences in raw feed characteristics; the general availability of a wide range of equipment sizes and reliable suppliers of equipment; and the general availability of appropriate and relatively cheap chemicals that are the major driving forces behind mineral flotation. Just how has the implementation of froth flotation fared in coal upgrading over the last 20 years? It is towards answering this question that this paper will be oriented. As such, the discussion will be somewhat philosophical. The comments offered are based on the personal experiences of this author who has worked in the basic side of inventing new flotation chemistry and flotation analysis techniques with the major overriding goal of implementing this new technology successfully at the industrial level in both coal and mineral flotation throughout much of the world. This paper is not intended to be a complete reference to all published scientific work on the subject of industrial froth flotation of coal. As a brief background to what will be expanded upon in this paper, the author would like to offer the following summary comments: 1) the industrial practice of fine coal froth flotation is qualitatively similar but quantitatively different than industrial mineral froth flotation when viewed from either research considerations, operating viewpoints or economic evaluation criteria; 2) it is clearly possible to invent and/or develop new technology (such as new chemistry and/or equipment) that can do statistically better than current plant practice in well-controlled tests in either coal or mineral flotation circuits; 3) there is so much inherent variability to the raw feed coal streams and other operating parameters that even if there is a documented technical incentive to implement some new piece of technology, the people, instrumentation and control methodology required are often simply not available or not economic unless the potential payoff is quite large.

Asarco has been using computer-aided open-pit mine design since 1966. The in-house developed program package includes drill-hole analysis programs, interpolation routines, and three-dimensional open-pit design programs. The financial analysis step after pit design required that a reasonably accurate schedule be produced so that a good cash flow model could assess the feasibility of a project. The manual method of scheduling was too time-consuming for feasibility work, so a computerized scheduler was required. Since no computerized mine scheduling programs existed, we requested proposals from consulting firms to develop such a program. The selection of a consulting firm, the formulation of the contract and design specifications required about three years to accomplish. The consulting firm, Systems Control Inc. (SCI), of Palo Alto, spent over one year doing the programming and testing alone. The details of the program development were reported in "Computerized Year-by-Year Open-Pit Mine Scheduling," SME-AIME Transactions, December 1974. In June of 1973 the program, which SCI dubbed Optimum Resource Extraction or ORE, was installed. Version 1 of ORE was utilized successfully on three separate properties over a period of two years. During this time it became obvious that some of the original design specifications were restrictive, and certain modifications were required. The ORE program was submitted for modification, and after one year version 2 was operational in May of 1976. The program now consists of approximately 20,000 lines of FORTRAN source statements grouped into 190 subprograms, and runs in a 450K region of Asarco's 370/148 in Cranford, NJ. The Tucson com¬puter (370/115) is tied to the Cranford computer via a 9600 baud leased T.P. line, for running mine scheduling and other large mine planning programs.

INTRODUCTION The Control Problem The need for automatic control in flotation plants stems from frequent and randomly occurring disturbances to the feed slurry. Typical disturbances occur in the solids feedrate, the slurry percent sol ids, and the mineralogy and flotability of the gangue and valuable minerals. In plants where semi -autogenous grinding mills (SAG) are used, feedrate changes are very large and changes in feed percent solids of 1m or more are common. Mineralogy changes between valuable minerals are common, as are changes in the host gangue rock. As these changes occur, the operator can attempt to compensate for them by making adjustments to the flotation cell levels, the dosage rates of the collectors and frothers, the pH, and in some cases the aeration rate of the cells. This problem is sometimes complicated by the fact that different sections of the flotation plant will be processing different ore types at the same time. Potential Savings with Control Flotation control brings about savings or plant improvements in two areas; the first is in improved metallurgy and the second is in reagent savings. Improved metallurgy includes increases in the average plant recovery and achieves target concentrate grade level s more consistently. Average recovery increases between 1.0 and 5.0 percentage points have been widely reported (Paakkinen, 1979; Sutherland, 1984). Reagent savings of up to 40 percent have also been reported (Hales, 1985). VARIABLES OF IMPORTANCE Control led, Manipulated, and Disturbance Variables The initial step in the analysis of the flotation control problem is identification of important variables which can affect the efficiency of separation. The efficiency of separation is represented by a group of controlled variables which can quantify the performance of a flotation circuit. This group includes variables such as grade, recovery, tonnage through- put, and circulating loads. The efficiency of separation of a flotation circuit may generally be defined by a grade recovery map, where each point on this map re- presents a set of operating conditions (see Figure 1). However, the combination of operating conditions must be set to operate close to the economic optimum. Two different groups of mechanisms have been considered in the past to explain the effects of chemical additives on grinding. While one group of explanations is based upon alterations of surface and mechanical properties of the individual particles, the other group depends mainly on the arrangement of particles and their flow in suspensions. In this paper some of the past work on grinding aids is reviewed and attrition grinding of a commercially important ceramic material, zirconia (stabilized with yttria) with polyaaylic acid as grinding aid, is studied in order to determine the effect of the aid on the ground product itself. It was observed that even though polyaaylic acid did cause a drastic decrease in the viscosity of the pulp, it did not have any major effect on the grinding of zirconia at least up to 2000 ppm and only minor detrimental effect above it. Importantly, complexation by the polymer was found to cause extraction of yttrium into solution with possibly significant changes in the surface chemical composition of the product.

Two low water flux test covers were placed on acid generating waste rack dumps at the Kidston Gold Mine in Queensland, Australia The climate is semi arid with distinct wet/dry seasons. The present study was initiated to develop a cover system to restrict infiltration. The design of the cover required optimization of water storage and evapotranspiration. Instrumentation was installed on both dumps to measure infiltration, moisture conditions and climatic parameters. Field measurements over the last three years indicate that both covers are performing satisfactorily. Selection of the final cover for closure is described on the basis of these results.

Specialty silica materials, as defined in this chapter, are rocks that consist predominantly of silica (SiO2) and are produced as chunks, round pebbles, and sawed or trimmed blocks and other shapes for nonconstruction applications. The rock types include quartzite, sandstone, novaculite, flint, chert, and vein quartz. Other terms used commercially include jasper, silex, lascas, and rock crystal. In its publication, Minerals Yearbook, the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) reports the production and consumption of some specialty silica materials under several headings. Quartzite, sandstone, and novaculite used in abrasive applications are addressed by the USBM under Abrasive Materials. Lascas, a type of vein quartz used in growing synthetic quartz crystals and in fusing applications, is discussed under Quartz Crystal. The paper reviews current mining subsidence research at The Department of Mining Engineering, University of Notting- ham. Special attention is being devoted to prediction of ground movements between the mining horizon and the surface using physical and computer-based models. The paper presented discusses linear and non- linear finite element methods and compares results with those from physical models and field observations. Special attention is focussed on the determination of the effect of caved zones on overlying and underlying geological structures. The paper presents data from comparisons with U.K. case histories.

The Endako Mine is an open-pit molybdenum mine located in the north central region of British Columbia, Canada, about 960 km (600 road miles) north of Vancouver. Production for the latter part of 1992 was expected to averaged 63.5 kt/d (70,000 stpd). Of that amount, 27 kt/d (30,000 stpd) was the mill feed. This production is achieved with five 11.5 to 14.5 m3 (15 to 19 cu yd) electric shovels, six Euclid R190 and two Unit Rig M120 diesel-electric haul trucks, and three 320 mm (12.25 in.) electric rotary drills. There are three ore zones delineated into pit areas: the Endako, Denak East and Denak West. Present mill feed source is the southeast stage of the Endako Pit. Stripping is carried out in the south wall stage also of the Endako Pit. The mine high grade aggregate is reduced in the primary and secondary crushing circuits before processing in conventional RM-BM-flotation circuits. The majority of the molybdenum sulfide (MoS2) is roasted on site to produce technical grade molybdenum oxide (M003). A portion is further refined and treated to yield a 99.9% pure MoS2 product.

INTRODUCTUCTICN The coal seams at Bobov dol basin are highly prone to spontaneous combustion in Bulgaria. The risks of endogenous fires (SPONCOM) exist mainly in gob area. During the last 15 years three different technologies for preventing and fighting SPONCOM have been applied in underground mines of this basin: pulp from hard material and water, foam and inerting with nitrogen. On the basis of experimental application of these technologies as well as theoretical and experimental research a new technology - Foam Pulp Technology (FPT) was worked out. It is very effective in difficult to reach places in a gob. BACKGROUND AND THE NEED OF FPT Application of the three methods mentioned above showed advantages as well as some disadvantages, allowing determination of their effective application scope depending on geological and working conditions. Their advantages can be summarized as follows: - Foaming: high viscosity at low density, which allows forming a thick layer; good surfactant wetting properties; excellent effective cooling during evaporation in high temperature zones. - Pulping with mixture of solid particles (e.g., fly ash) and water from surface installation: easy to apply in a mine; low operational and energy costs due to gravity transport from the surface to the gob: good ecological results because the waste material is returned back underground. - Inerting with nitrogen: volumetric action which doesn't restrict the thickness of treated coal pile; easy to apply in a mine; controllable nitrogen delivery depending on fire hazard conditions. Main disadvantages of the same three methods are: - Foaming: rapid disintegration due to intrusion into heterogeneous and porous media and high costs due to the need of frequent large volume foam flows (short foam's life); - Pulping: inapplicable for coal piles with high thickness which is of great importance in the cases of seams with ununiform hypsometry (rapid and frequent changes in a seam configuration) and/or great volumes of coal or ore piles particularly heated to a high temperature; strong dependence on gob floor declination; water draining of the working face area which impedes the movement of supports and chain conveyor's. - Inerting: relatively high costs hardly depending on the rate of face advance (fig.1) in comparison with the other methods; it is difficult to ensure sufficient oxygen at the exit end of the face. This problem is crucial in faces with a high level of methane emissions; accelerating of the oxidation and spontaneous heating of the pile after turning off the nitrogen supply.
