INTRODUCTION Koolyanobbing is an open cut iron ore mine, which is located in Yilgarn region of Western Australia. To prevent the operators from suffering silicosis diseases and protect the air from being polluted, a series of dust control measures have been taken. These measures include ventilation and dust control system for sample preparation shed, dust collecting system for drill rig, dust suppression system for ore processing plant, dust control for haul road. The details related to individual dust control measure are dealt as follows. SAMPLE PREPARATION SHED DUST CONTROL The sample preparation is one of the major dust sources at Koolyanobbing. The activity is being carried out at the sample preparation shed. It typically needs to go through the following stages, that is, crushing, splitting, drying and pulverising. The amount of dust generated from crushing and splitting is mainly determined by the moisture content contained in the pre- pared sample. A significant amount of dust is generated at the sample pulverising stage due to cleaning sample bowl with com- pressed air. To protect the sample preparing personnel's health and make the dust level in the air meet the requirement from the health and safety authority, a central ventilation and dust control system has been installed at the sample preparation shed. As shown in Fig. l, the system consists of suction heads, suction lines, dust collector and vacuum fan. The fan creates vacuum environment in the system, therefore the dust is drawn into the dust collector through the suction heads and suction lines. The dust collector is of fabric filter. When the dusty air comes to the filter, the dust in the air is collected and retained on the surface of the filter while the clean air passes through and enters the atmosphere. The retained dust is blowed out by the pressured air pulses and deposits into the dust bin underneath the filter. A time relay device is used to control the cleaning time and the cleaning interval. DRILL RIG DUST CONTROL A hydraulic percussion drill is used to drill blast holes. To carry out the drilling operation properly and efficiently, the cut- tings are being flushed out of the hole by the compressed air. In order to prevent from the fine particles in the cuttings escaping to the air, a dust collector is attached to the drill. The collector mainly consists of suction head, cyclone and bag filter. Refer to Fig. 2. The suction head is installed at the lower end of the feed beams and is movable. The moving range is up to 250 mm. It is not only used to restrict the cuttings, but also used to prevent water from entering the filters when drilling wet hole. A 406 mm diameter primary cyclone is used to separate the heaviest particles in the cuttings. It is also used as blast holes sampling equipment. One part of the dust particles are collected by a sample bag through a splitter attached to the end of the cy- clone. The rest of the particles fall down to the ground through the closing rubber. The bag filter is driven by a hydraulic motor (1). It is used to collect the lighter particles in the cuttings. The filtering area is 16 m2 and the dust separation efficiency is up to 99.9%. The working principle of the filter is demonstrated in Fig. 3. When the rock drill (9) flushing is turned on, the pressurised air from the compressor is directed to the rock drill and to the pres- sure switch (10). The pressured air will open the pressure switch to de-energise and close the solenoid valve (4) The pressure affecting the cut-off cylinder (5) keeps the exhaust port flap open. When the flushing valve (8) is closed, the pressure affecting the cut-off cylinder disappears and the internal intake opening flap is closed by a spring. The pressure also ceases to affect the pressure switch and the spring switches the contact to the point 2. The time relay (11) is now activated and gives a 0.5 second current impulse to the solenoid valve and keeps the current cut off for approx 8 seconds. When the solenoid valve is live, it opens and lets an impulse of pressured air to the filters (2). These impulses will clean the filters.

The results of a survey of 46 West Virginia coal samples, employing the Office of Coal Research-Band coal sewage treatment process, indicated that the Freeport coal and Bakerstown coal from Preston County, Pittsburgh coal from Harrison and Ohio County and the Sewickley coal from Monongalia County offer outstanding potential for water clarification. Oxidation, steam treatment and acid and base washing of coal generally resulted in small positive or negative changes to the water clarification capacities of the coal while the employment of prepared coal fractions resulted in more significant benefits. Of the coals tested, those fractions with high ash, high sulfur and low Btu generally possessed the highest adsorption capacities.

A small underground mine in northern Idaho was used as an experimental facility for studying the role of water in the analysis of mine-opening stability. Laboratory test data, borehole measurements and geological mapping assisted in the construction of a coupled finite element model of the rock mass. The model was used to make quantitative estimates of rock stress, strain and displacement changes and to make estimates of the water pressure and flow velocity changes that occurred during historical mining. Stope cuts and wet fills were included in the analysis. The stability of the crown pillars between stopes was of particular interest. The relatively low effective stress and high rock-mass strength showed that water pressure changes were of no great consequence, which is in agreement with experience. The computational tools used in the analysis may be applied to other wet mines with appropriate changes to site-specific data.

Western underground coal reserves are tremendous, but recovery in western seams can be poor because of mining problems caused by deep cover, geologic anomalies, and thick seams. For instance, many seams contain a rock parting too thick to be extracted economically with the coal. This forces the operator to mine the coal above or below the parting. Subsequently, the rock pressures induced by mining make the part left difficult or impossible to extract by standard mining methods. Because upper and lower parts of the seam are frequently of minable thickness, the presence of rock partings can result in a significant loss of coal. Given a longwall recovery of 60 pct and equal thickness for the two parts of the seam, overall recovery is reduced to less than 30 pct if one part only is mined. The coal left in place is unavailable to meet the nation's energy needs, or to produce revenues for coal companies or government. [ ] Multi-slice longwall mining has the potential to recover the portion of split seams that are now left in the mine. Using superimposed standard longwalls with chain pillars, overall recovery could be doubled, depending on panel and pillar widths. Using a combination of advancing and retreating longwalls in descending slices, overall recovery could be improved to more than 80 pct. Because of the potential for improved recovery, the Bureau of Mines is analyzing the ground control factors affecting multi-slice longwall under western mining conditions and is conducting field trials at a planned multi-slice operation.

INTRODUCTION During the normal course of a mining project, a feasibility study will be prepared that addresses all the aspects of the project including geology and mineral inventories, mining and geo- technical, metallurgical processing, infrastructure, environmental considerations and economic analyses. These studies are prepared for various reasons. Occasionally, a feasibility study will be prepared solely for use within a company as justification for development expenditures, however, these documents are frequently submitted outside the company either to raise funds from financial institutions or from public financing on one of the various securities exchanges. Mineral industry consultants are often called upon to participate in the preparation of feasibility studies or to conduct an independent audit and review of an internally prepared study. As the recoverable mineral resources form the foundation upon which the balance of a feasibility study is based, including the economic analysis of the project, the resource aspect of the study is examined very carefully by financial and securities organizations. The balance of this discussion is directed toward the various geological and resource estimation aspects of feasibility studies that experience has shown to be of particular importance. Much of this discussion will be directed toward open pit gold operations, although the principles are applicable to any type of deposit. 2.0 GEOLOGIC RESPONSIBILITIES IN FEASIBILITY STUDIES The principal geological effort in the preparation of a feasibility study is generally dedicated to the following areas: - Preparation of Geologic Reserve/Resource Estimates - Condemnation of Sites for Facilities, Access Roads, Leach Pads, Waste Dumps and Tailings Disposal - Collection of Geotechnical Data - Provision of Mineralogical and Petrological Data Pertinent to Metallurgical Processing - Selection of Appropriate Bulk Sampling Sites for Collection of Metallurgical Samples Each of these items will be addressed in detail in the following sections. 3.0 RESERVE/RESOURCE ESTIMATION An ore reserve estimate consists of the determination of a volume, or tonnage, and a grade for the deposit. There are numerous cases in the mining industry of projects that have experienced severe difficulties when operational ore grade, tonnage or metallurgical amenability have proven to be deficient compared to predicted estimates. An error in estimation of tonnage generally leads to more long term problems affecting mine life and production schedules. However, a significant error in the estimation of grade, particularly if mined grade is lower than anticipated, can have an immediate, and often disastrous, effect upon a project. A microcomputer controlled data acquisition system has been developed for automatic monitoring of underground instrumentation from a remote location. The system has been used extensively by Spokane Research Center personnel for monitoring rock instrumentation in shafts, drifts, and stopes in hardrock and coal mines, especially where instrument access is limited. Ruggedness was a major consideration in designing the underground portion of the system and it has performed satisfactorily under extreme environmental conditions, including temperatures to 1100 F, 100% humidity, and falling water. The major advantage of the system is that it multiplexes the data from 16 channels through a single twisted pair cable to the receiver, significantly reducing cabling requirements. This receiving station can be as far as 8,000 ft from the instruments without the addition of line drivers. The receiver maintains a data buffer with the latest scans, which is periodical 1 y accessed by a micro- computer, either locally or through a modem, that automatically records and reduces the data. Utilities allow on-site plotting of data and uploading of data to mainframe computers.

This paper presents technical issues in the design and management of a retorted oil shale disposal site. Major physical and geochemical mechanisms which affect the disposal are: heat transport, moisture migration, chemical species transport, auto-ignition, and mechanical behavior alterations of the retorted oil shale pile. The interaction of these mechanisms and their relative magnitude will affect the environmental behavior of the pile. The paper discusses the coupling between the mechanisms, presents a framework to quantify the processes by laboratory and field measurements, and in addition discusses the use of mathematical models to provide quantitative predictions.

The identification and-develop¬ment of new construction aggregate resources, the most common mineral mined, is an essential need in this country's growing urban areas. In developing an aggregate exploration program, a thorough geological identification of all potential aggregate resources in an area is still of primary importance but other factors have also to be considered. These include physical properties, end product application, transportation and mining costs, and local government regulations including zoning. The present major aggregate producers are most likely to develop these future resources and are in the best position to initiate comprehensive exploration programs.

Using potassium oleate as a collector and alizarin red S as a modifying agent, selective depression of dolomite from francolite was achieved in an alkaline medium (pH > 9.0). Adsorption of alizarin reds alone on dolomite was found to be higher than that on francolite. Complimentary adsorption experiments of alizarin red S and oleate showed that oleate adsorprion was increased in the presence of alizaring red S. The results are explained in terms of comparative adsorption for the active sites on francolite and dolomite by oleate and alizarin red S and their interactions with dissolved mineral species in solution.

The role of bacterial oxidation in the mining industry is becoming more widely accepted. Western Australia has accepted the technology as a pretreatment for refractory gold concentrates more readily than most. The third of such plants has been completed at the Y ouanmi Gold Mine. This is situated approxi­mately 500 kilometres north east of Perth, in the Yilgarn mineral field. Y ouanmi concentrates are produced from underground ore and contain arsenopyrite and pyrite as the main sulphide miner­als. Refractory gold from this deposit is generally associated with the arsenopyrite portion of the material. Gold Mines of Australia Ltd ("GMA") initiated pilot scale testing at the BacTech premises in November 1993. The decision by GMA to use BacTech's technology was announced in February 1994. Design and construction commenced at this time. Bacterial growth on site was initiated in July 1994 and continuous opera­tion began in the October. Concentrate was added at 0.5 tonnes per hour and this has increased to 1 tonne per hour.

Coal mines in the United States are the most productive in the world in terms of efficient labor employment. This is because of an abundance of workable coal beds, large infusions of capital, improved management practices and continuing competitive pressures. The standard unit of measurement for labor productivity is expressed as tons/manshift, although for underground mines, operators often refer to tons per machineshift. Articles written concerning labor productivity generally focus on measurement techniques, safety considerations, application of technology and training. This article will illustrate by example the impact of labor efficiency (or inefficiency) on the ultimate selling price of coal, f.o.b. mine site. During the past several years, the coal industry has seen significant improvement in labor use. Figure 1 shows the trends in productivity for all active mines in the United States from 1985 through 1994. Productivity in 1985 was 20.1 t/manshift (22.1 st/ manshift). This factor has increased almost linearly throughout that period to 37.5 t/manshift (41.2 st/manshift). This is a 7.2% annual compound growth rate.

The following is a progress report on a continuing study being made by the Sanitary District for purposes of developing reliable data for predicting costs and progress on future tunnel contracts. All data available to date on five separate tunnel contracts has been analyzed. All were machine-mined in soft ground, all used steel ribs and wood lagging and finished inside diameters varying from 5'6" to 6'6". Basic data regarding progress per shift, hours mined per shift, hours of downtime per shift, cause of downtime and type of soil mined were reported by the District's resident engineer at the job site. Figure 1, Weekly Mining Report is an example of the form used. Data regarding manpower and equipment used during tunnelling operations was also supplied by the resident engineer during the course of construction. Soil type being mined was verified by the resident engineer during construction, by visual observation, and compared with data listed on a previously prepared soil profile. Mine site managers reported occurrences of locking assembly bolt failures on the Enlow Fork Coal Mine's slope belt conveyor. The observations were made after a number of years of operation and raised questions as to the status of the assemblies in operation. These questions prompted a detailed review of the situation by independent consultants. Using operational history of the conveyor and confirmation of belt loads by static and dynamic methods, a locking assembly fatigue curve was created to suggest expected service life. From this work, suggestions were made to modify the pulley assemblies for extended service life.

Environmental regulations concerning the processing of gold ores and the treatment and disposal of spent process solutions range from rigid standards in some locations to site specific options in several other jurisdictions. This paper examines the regulations and policies in two North American jurisdictions. Emphasis will be placed on the mill process and waste stream treatment and disposal, and implications for environmental impacts. Case examples of mine licence requirements will be discussed, with brief descriptions of individual treatment and disposal systems. Policies and environ- mental regulations within each jurisdiction will be examined in terms of potential environmental protection.

Three Sulfate-Reducing Bacteria (SRB) passive field-bioreactors were constructed at an abandoned mine site near Butte, Montana, to mitigate AMD emanating from a waste rock pile. Each SRB field-bioreactor contains chambers of an organic source, limestone, and cobbles. The field-bioreactors are configured differently to test the effect of different environmental conditions on the SRB. Preliminary observations indicate that, during start up and the first eight months of operation, the quantity of organic carbon supply significantly impacts the SRB activity. To date, the dissolved metals have been reduced significantly and the pH has increased.

New powerplants, tunnels and dams are currently under construction at Meraaker to triple the annual power production of a nearly 100 year old power scheme. A total of 44 km tunnels with cross sections varying from 7 m2 to 32 m2 have been excavated in hard rock formations. Ten kilometers were excavated by a High Performance Tunnel Boring Machine (HP TBM). The remaining tunnels have been completed by the drill and blast method, using modem proven equipment and procedures. This paper gives special attention to the TBM drive and equipment selection, including, planning, site organization and performance.

Extensive undersea coal reserves, identified in the offshore portion of the Sydney coalfield, Nova Scotia, have resulted in the implementation of a multi-year research program to develop site specific guidelines for the undersea longwall mining operations. At present, uncertainty exists regarding the applicability of the current undersea mining guidelines. Preliminary studies have revealed four potential schemes for monitoring seafloor longwall subsidence profiles: seasurface, subsea, geophysics, and direct monitoring. However, further work has indicated that the use of marine geophysical techniques may be the most effective method of identifying and evaluating seafloor subsidence profiles by comparing pre- and post-mining seafloor topographies.

An account of driving and concreting two 900 m railroad tunnels for the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad under emergency conditions. Details the importance of on-site decision making by the Owner in completing the project successfully in record time. A general description of the geology and construction methods. The Thistle Drainage Tunnel drained water impounded behind the Thistle slide and serves as permanent diversion of the Spanish Fork River and Thistle Creek around the slide area. The project involved 684 meters of 5 m horseshoe tunnel, a 5 m diameter raised shaft and 23,000 cm of cut excavation.

Holes cored through the Prairie Creek lamproite volcanic complex at the Crater of Diamonds State Park by companies interested in the site's commercial diamond potential give an opportunity to redefine the size and shape of the Prairie Creek pipe. Relationships of cored rock sequences and the discovery of a previously unrecognized major rock type allow a reinterpretation of the sequence and type of intrusive activity. Trench sampling of diamondiferous rock units yielded a diamond content far below what was anticipated based on an estimate from historical records. Inadequacies of shallow bulk-testing methods for a diamondiferous pipe are examined.

Coal and water are the two basic external feedstocks required for a coal gasification project. The WESCO project in northwest New Mexico, a joint undertaking of Texas Eastern Transmission Corporation and Pacific Lighting Corporation, will require about 25,000 tons of coal and approximately 7.5 million gallons of water each day to produce 250 million cubic feet per day (MMCFD) of pipeline quality substitute natural gas (SNG). The coal and water supply arrangement with Utah International, Inc. assures the project of an adequate supply of these two vital feedstocks.
