The C&NW Ore Dock at Escanaba, Michigan, is a major terminal on Lake Michigan for iron ore pellets arriving from the Marquette Iron Range located 112 km (70 miles) to the north. In an average year, the terminal handles in excess of 8 000 000 Mg (LT) of iron ore pellets consigned to a number of major steel companies. It is important to the steel companies for both cost control and operating efficiency that each cargo be sampled as accurately as possible in order to determine the physical and chemical properties of the pellets. This paper describes the equipment and operating procedures of the sampling facility and Presents some sampling data.

The demand for sustainable and profitable/efficient projects within the tunneling and other underground engineering sectors grows rapidly. Construction tasks play a key role within the project conduction, whether as primary (tunneling), secondary (e.g., mine securing) or tertiary processes (e.g., workshops). The construction tasks of primary processes create the main structures, such as tunnels, which resemble the main project goal. For the secondary and tertiary processes, the purpose of the task shifts. The main goal is to provide structures, such as the securing of the cavity and workshops, that enable the project and enhance the efficiency of the primary conduction underground. To plan and optimize the conduction of construction tasks underground, whether they are identified as primary, secondary or tertiary tasks, the work preparation can be used. This method, known from the above ground construction, can be adapted and used underground. The approach of a digital work preparation tool combines, connects and adapts the main tasks “choice of procedure,” “logistics” and “site planning.” In addition, the digital tool is connected with digital models (construction, site, surroundings). With the adaption and forward projection of the work preparation, underground constructions (e.g., tunneling) can provide a more sustainable and efficient outcome.

A study was made to determine those petrographic parameters that are correlative with carbonate-aggregate quality as indicated by the Los Angeles abrasion and absorption tests. Samples collected at 28 sites in northern and eastern Indiana were analyzed petrographically, chiefly for void content, grain size, grain-size variation, grain shape, and grain interlock. Most of the sampled sites are in the belt of Silurian rocks of east-central and north- western Indiana. Though a few sites lie outside this belt, most of these have only a thin Devonian section above the Silurian. Three sites are non-Silurian and are included for comparison. Most of the samples studied are from Middle and Upper Silurian units. Both biohermal and nonbiohermal facies are included. The biohermal rocks are typically dense but vugular, finely crystalline granular dolomite. Nonbiohermal facies are porous, medium to coarsely crystalline, granular dolomite with dolomite rhombs The Los Angeles abrasion losses ranged from 20 to 46 per cent, the rocks in the eastern part of the state showing the higher values. Absorption tests indicate the same general quality trend. Comparison of petrographic studies with Los Angeles abrasion- and absorption-test results indicate the following correlations. (1) As per, cent of voids increases, quality decreases. (2) As average grain size increases, quality decreases. (3) Variations from mean grain size appear to have no effect on the quality. (4) As angularity and roughness of the grains increase, quality increases. (5) As grain-to-grain interlock increases, quality increases. Variations in the calcium-magnesium ratio have no apparent effect on aggregate quality, except as they affect the texture.

December 3, 1972, James Wm. White presented the results of an instrumentation and process control survey which was sponsored by the Anaconda Company at the annual Tucson Subsection AIME meeting.(1) Twenty-six responses were obtained from questionnaires sent to 48 operating plants throughout the world. The survey results were discouraging in that there were more failures and problems than examples of success. The following quotes are taken from the text of the paper. "We run our mill by the seat of our pants." 'If these blue sky Ph.D.'s (in the instruments and controls area within research) had some operating experience they wouldn't make a lot of the suggestions they do."

"Productivity in openpit mines depends on the observation and adjustment of critical phases of operation. As one of the most expensive activities in openpit production, optimization of the load-haul-dump cycle becomes a critical aspect to address. Using simulation techniques and an ad hoc methodology for analyzing the key performance indicators (KPIs) involved in the production cycle, it is possible to compare actual performance and ideal operating conditions and develop an alert system when operating conditions are subpar with the expected production standards.Study objectivesThe purpose of this work is to implement a methodology for optimizing the haulage cycle by identifying and adjusting the factors that affect the cycle time performance. The methodology includes the implementation of an alert system emitting warning messages when one or several trucks are idle, or when the time of completing production tasks is falling outside a predefined value. This alert is compared with predefined KPIs and is used to determine corrective actions.The alert will:• Demonstrate the benefits of time analysis and how this affects the productivity results in the mining process.• Demonstrate the utility of KPIs in the extraction of ore and waste and how they help to identify equipment performance.• Develop software interfaces to visualize the alert system in order to increase awareness in the operations supervisor.• Make recommendations for future applications that can help improve the productive process of an openpit mine.Problem statementTransporting material in openpit mines may require the utilization of high capacity equipment, which also represents an elevated cost per hour. A supervisory system that controls the adequate distribution of trucks and shovels by providing the operational status of each unit shall contribute to increase productivity while subsequently reducing operational costs. Nevertheless, there is an issue with certain dead times such as queue trucks for loading, trucks waiting to be loaded and other delays. This creates inefficiencies in fuel consumption and energy utilization.For the identification of delays, a contextbased system could be required in order to help optimize the haulage cycle time by controlling delays in loading, haulage and dumping. After applying this methodology, efforts were focused in correcting out-of-standard performance values."

"The paper treats the spatial aspect of mine sequence optimization. This aspect is revealed in the context of determination of the optimum number of cutbacks of an open pit mine. Cutback mining is a dominating method currently in base\precious metal mining and it is based on a pseudo-economic discretization of the pit space by using advanced pit design algorithms. The result of the implementation of such approach of pit design is the generation of pit shells, which need to be grouped into an optimum number of cutbacks for maximization of the project value. A mathematical solution of this problem is developed with the utilization of a combinatorial analysis. The solution provides a multi-variant investigation of the optimum mine sequence with the implementation of an author’s method for production scheduling optimization, which uses the Net Present Value as a criterion for assessing the economic efficiency of mine sequencing. A case study is provided for the conditions of a hypothetical open pit gold mine to illustrate the applicability of the approach. The results obtained reveal the complex nature of the variation of the Net Present Value as a function of the cutback geometry. INTRODUCTION The mine sequence optimization in open pit mining is a procedure that predetermines the efficiency of the production scheduling optimization. From a technological standpoint, the mine sequence optimization deals with two aspects – spatial and time. Each of them plays a tremendously important role in searching for the optimum solution of the open pit design problem. Original results on the time aspect of mine sequence optimization are published by Halatchev [2002]. They reveal a wide range of the Net Present Value (NPV) variation for a multi-variant arrangement of mine sequence over time and using a fixed geometry of the cutbacks, which determines the economic potential of a single open pit mine from a deterministic standpoint. The results show a range of NPV variation up to 30% depending on the stripping ratio of the mine. The effect of this variation is mainly due to the implementation of the mine planning principle of waste deferment in the scheduling optimization and using all theoretically possible variants of mine sequence arrangement by the inclusion of the bench sequences over the Life-Of-Mine (LOM) in the production process."

The advent of Nuclear Energy has caused a phenomenal growth in the uranium mining industry. To keep abreast of this surge the mining industry has located many ore bodies, determined the best types of mining adaptable to this particular type of ore and developed a highly specialized type of operation. But, has the mining industry gone far enough in the planning? Has ?built-in? safety been included in the efficient methods of operation? Preplanning safety in the mining industry, as in all industries, takes engineering and ingenuity combined with the experience and cooperation of all concerned. A system of mining can be planned on a map and it will look good. However, when the actual mining takes place, conditions may be such that deviations from the original plans may be required because of excessive water faults or other conditions encountered. With safety we may also be required to change, to conform to the characteristics of a particular operation. People in the mining industry are well aware that loose back has killed miners each year. This condition occurred in practically all types of mines. The condition is not new to us. It is also known that explosives, haulage, machinery and conditions common to all types of mining have taken a heavy toll of human life in mining. In addition to these hazards in the uranium mines, the hazard of radon is also present, Radon is a radioactive gas liberated from ores containing radium. This gas is released into the active workings by the blasting or breaking up of the ore. Sometimes it is caused by radium contaminated water seepage from abandoned workings or from the ore body itself. Until the action of this gas on the human was known, many miners were affected. Un- less adequate precuations are taken to protect the people in these mines,, they may be exposed to this hazard, Health researchers made a study of this substance to determine how it would affect the health of the men, They also studied men who had worked in previous years, in mines known to have contained radioactive materials. All of this research contributed to the present knowledge of radon and its daughter products. It is not flammable nor explosive, but, if allowed to enter the body through the respiratory organs it can cause serious damage. Mines have been operated in the past and are still being operated, which were known to contain explosive and noxious gases, indicating that this problem can be controlled. Several states have instituted laws that make it mandatory to provide adequate ventilation and use of monitoring devices to limit radon and its daughter products to a maximum of 300 micro-microcuries per liter of air. This is considered a safe limit for sustained periods of human exposure. While the findings of research do not prove conclusively that the inhalation of excessive radon or its daugher products cause lung cancer, indications point to this as a possibility, particularly radium A and radium C1 of the daughter products. The threshold limits set by law in most uranium producing states are believed to be safe. In a few years, when tests and data now in the process of collection by interested state officials and laboratories is complete, these limits may be found to be ready for revision. Studies such as these take time. At present, the limits that are used are based upon estimates. The permissible limits of exposure to radon and daughter products include a large safety factor. It is considered that a good supply of fresh air delivered to the working places, adequate dust control, the sealing of unused or abandoned workings, the removal of mine water which is generally contaminated and a safe waiting period after blasting, will hold to a minimum the dangers from this source. There are, of course, problems accompanying each of these procedures. For example, the ventilating of untimbered raises and bringing fresh, uncontaminated air to the working places may be a problem. However, a good mining man can solve these problems as they apply in each particular operation. From the information available at the present time, the daughter products containing polonium and emitting alpha radiation, may be a health hazard. Fortunately, the half life of most of the daughter products is short, however, radium D has a half life of 22 years and presents a problem of contamination in the storage of old tailings. So we can see that failure to comply with the accepted good mining practices may have harmful effects on the health of miners. It is gratifying to note the interest in this potential hazard by the officials in the uranium ore producing states, who are making extensive studies and keeping records of the men who work in this type of mining. This all provide information necessary for preplanning safety. By contrast, little has been accomplished to control the injuries and deaths from some other factors connected with most underground mining operations. In several investigations the correlation has been studied between the fuel consumption and the reducibility of the charged material in the zone of indirect reduction in the blast furnace (1, 2, 3, 4, 5). It has been found that increased reducibility allows greater gas utilization which accordingly lowers the fuel consumption. In direct reduction units this relation has not yet been fully established partly owing to the lack of accurate test methods and experience with different materials as regards reducibility. However, since the production rate in a direct reduction unit is closely related to the time required to reach high degrees of reduction, the reducibility must be regarded as one of the most important properties of the material.

"The Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR), Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD), is continuing its High-Energy High-Displacement (HEHD) testing of field-scale shotcrete panels. A test program was developed to determine the relationship between applied force, displacement, and energy for both unreinforced and reinforced shotcrete panels. Reinforcement options consisted of synthetic macro-fibers, sprayed polyurea liners, chain-link fence, welded-wire mesh, and combinations of these products. During testing, photogrammetry was used to measure the geometric changes of the panels, including volume changes and panel cracking. These measurements were correlated with the load and displacement data, allowing visual observation to be related to the applied force and displacement. The test results provide a comparison of the mechanical performance of the various panel types and can be used by the practicing engineer to evaluate installed support based on visual observation of cracking and deformation. Visual assessment of the loading cycle and strength capacity of shotcrete in underground excavations will improve mine safety by providing a means to quantify the stability of installed shotcrete support. The seismic refraction technique is probably the most popular geophysical method of bedrock profiling in geotechnical site investigations but is somewhat restricted by the inherent assumptions in the method. This paper describes how Hales' method of profile interpretation is modified to overcome the assumptions of increasing velocity and layer thickness with depth when only first arrival data is available. A further expansion of Hales method enables presentation of refraction data in a form whereby bedrock features, such as changes in velocity, relief and dip in particular, are more readily recognized. Characteristic curves of the more common bedrock features are presented as an aid to bedrock feature recognition.

In a world of technology and electronic communication, it is easy to forget what engineers do best with a problem: sitting around a table, exchanging views and ideas with sketches and respecting everyone?s view. This was the approach adopted in the project to arrive at a solution for the cross passage opening sup-port for the Seattle University Link Extension. Schedule and space constraints usually impede concurrent cross passage excavation and tunnel boring machine (TBM) operation. And where the space is constrained, opening support solutions that maximize available cross sections are of great benefit. While there are a number of solutions that minimize space, some of these solutions can require expensive steelwork and extensive drilling and fixing. However, following a detailed round-the-table discussion of the options and constraints, it was identified that a shotcrete shell would not only limit obstruction of the space during installation, but also permit easy installation, particularly around services, and avoid costly steelwork and drilling and fixing.

Diesel engines are a major source of underground miners? exposure to nitrogen dioxide. In an effort to reduce the exposure of underground miners to regulated and unregulated diesel emissions, primarily particulate matter, mining companies in the U.S. are retrofitting existing and introducing new engines with various exhaust aftertreatment technologies. Different aftertreatment devices, or changing the operating temperature of a selected device, can have unexpected effects on the concentration of nitrogen dioxide emitted by a diesel-powered piece of equipment. This paper provides an overview of the effects different exhaust aftertreatment technologies available to the mining industry have on no2 emissions.

Computer simulation of mine ventilation systems is rapidly becoming an essential tool in mine planning and design. This paper examines the utilization of ventilation simulation techniques to evaluate the number, shape, size and layout of mine entries in a typical coal mining system. Since the mains and sub-mains serve mainly for transportation and ventilation and the ventilation system is critically important to the health and safety of the workers, there exists a great need for optimal designs in this area. Evaluation criteria, could include, among others, minimization of power costs, shaft requirements and leakage. Constraints of this optimization problem include health and safety regulations and production and mine infrastructure requirements.

The hydrothermal agglomerating process described (U.S. Pat. 3,235,371, (1966)) is different from the conventional high temperature processes. Green pellets or briquettes made with mixtures of moist iron ore concentrates and burned or hydrated lime fines are hardened in an autoclave at 198°C and under steam pressure for 1/2 to 5 hours, with or without previous drying. Under the neutral conditions, oxidation of magnetite does not occur as in the conventional processes. The resulting agglomerates are hard and resistant to abrasion and weathering, and they do not disintegrate in the Linder test. The equipment required for the process is not complicated, and favorable operating costs are projected because of the low temperature and efficient heat recuperation. A low capital investment makes the process attractive even when the annual pellet production is below a million tons.

This article includes the application of roasting pretreatment by assisting the cyanidation process in the recovery of Au–Ag from Bolkardağ Gossan refractory ore and the characterization studies of the ore, roasting sample, and postcyanidation waste sample. While ore contained many metals along with gold and silver, the environment in which these metals were found was carbonate, sulfated, silicated, and iron oxide-containing deposits that have undergone oxidation. In mineralogical studies, there were Fe oxy/oxyhydroxides, Pb/Zn carbonates, and jarosite-bearing structures such as beudantite, calcite, dolomite, clay, and quartz in the ore. The sample used in the experiments was d80 = 29.6 μm, and the test parameters were determined by examining the TG analysis made to the ore. Preroasting experiments were carried out at a roasting temperature range of 200–800 °C, during a roasting period of 10.0 min. Three different samples were characterized by TG for temperature changes, FT-IR for bond structures and permeability, SEM/EDX for visual inspection of structural changes, and XRD Rietveld’s analysis for mineral % content differences. As a result of the cyanidation experiments carried out after the pretreatment, gold was recovered with 80–90% yields and silver with 40–48% yields, respectively.

The Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) mine is currently one of the deepest block cave mines in the world. The rock mass is heavily veined with little to no joints and faults are usually healed cohesive structures leading to difficult cave mining conditions. The caving process is improved if the rock mass contains fractures with sufficient density that it will cave by gravity as undercutting progresses. Hydraulic fracturing (HF) has been used to create fractures around the cave to improve mining. A seismic monitoring system has been used in DMLZ since the start of mining. Therefore, the seismic activities before, during and after HF can be monitored. Shear wave splitting is a process used to study the impacts of HF on the rock mass. This process involves the measurement of travel times from splitting shear waves after seismic events and using this to define the anisotropy within the rock mass and subsequently fracture density. This paper sets out the methodology for carrying out the interpretation of the shear wave splitting process using seismic data from the fracked cave crown and abutments along with an overview of the benefits to cave mining as result.

This paper presents an algorithm for optimizing the scheduling of trackless equipment in underground mines. With the shortest working interval and maximum productivity as goals, a genetic algorithm (GA) is used to solve the problem, and obtain the optimal working sequence with the most suitable equipment configuration possible. The input for the proposed method is the number of units and capacity of trackless equipment, the production process, ore amount in stopes, and the distance between stopes. The algorithmis verified using four setups of 5 stopes with 5 cycles, 5 stopes with 15 cycles, 10 stopes with 10 cycles, and 10 stopes with 30 cycles. The solution time of the algorithmis no more than 20 min, which is acceptable for practical applications. The results show that the setup of 10 stopes with 30 cycles is closer to the actual production of the mines, and the optimization model can effectively improve the operation efficiency. In this scenario, the robustness of the optimization is tested by simulating equipment failure events. Under the condition of 8% failure rate, the operation time is extended over 3.21–14.56% than expected, which represents strong robustness. The algorithm can quickly provide a feasible and effective solution for the production scheduling decision of trackless equipment in underground mines.

An exchange of coal mine specialists was made with the USSR under an "Agreement on Exchanges and Cooperation in Scientific, Technical, Cultural, and other Fields for 1972-73," which was signed by President Nixon and Chairman Breshnev on April 11, 1972.* This exchange, in the field of coal mine safety and scientific research in hazard control technologies, was one of 16 technical exchanges covered under the above agreement. A six-man USA delegation visited the Soviet Union from September 9 to September 21, 1973. The delegation visited four deep mines, three in the Donets Basin and one in the Moscow Basin, a State Safety Research Institute, a Mine Research Station and associated Research and Design Institute, two Research and Design mining equipment institutes, and a Trade Union-sponsored health sanitarium. In Moscow, the delegation received a briefing on the Soviet coal industry from First Deputy Minister Vladimir Fedanov. A similar briefing was given to us on the Donets coal basin by the Deputy Minister S. Saratikyanz of the Ukrainian Coal Ministry. Lengthy technical discussions were held with the mines staff and research personnel at the institutes we visited. In addition, we had detailed discussions with key staff members of two combinats "Donetskugol" and "Tulaugol." In all these meetings, principal topics were matters of safety related to hazards associated with face mechanization, coal transport, methane gas control measures, gas outbursts, coal and rock outbursts, fire fighting add control, explosion suppression and control measures and other related hazard factors. There was also much discussion on miner training, miner's attitudes toward safety and accident prevention practices, and preparation and enforcement of safety rules and regulations. The delegation was very warmly received and constant attention was given to our needs. Our numerous questions were answered with candor although quite often in not as much detail as we would have liked.

When unwatered after more than 50 years of operation, the White Rock Tunnel of the Upper American River Project in the foothills of the Sierra Mountains exhibited failing rockbolts and ground falls. Repairs designed for the 5 mile-long, 24-foot horseshoe unlined hydropower tunnel included pattern rock bolts, shotcrete, and cleanout of the rock trap. The work, originally scheduled for two 3-month winter outages, was completed under challenging conditions in a single 4-month outage following a carefully sequenced work plan using robotic shotcrete and rockbolter machines. Flexibility, creative solutions, and collaboration by all parties were key to project success.
