Land use impact assessment for mining is time- consuming and expensive. Because of mining’s impact on biodiversity, land use assessment methods that evaluate biodiversity are important for mining land use impact assessments. Remote sensing, in particular satellite multispectral sensing platforms such as Sentinel‑2 and the Landsat mission series, have been used to assess and quantify biodiversity through proxy variables such as NDVI (Peña-Lara et al., 2022). The objective of this paper is to present results of a comparative study of land use and biodiversity based on multispectral satellite observations and production data from copper and cobalt mining in the Democratic Republic of Congo. We quantify the relationship between different spectral bands and vegetative indices and the production data provided by the mining companies and measure correlations. The results suggest that remote sensing could be a cost- effective means of assessing biodiversity impacts of mining.

Open-source technology to support Industry 4.0 has become the target of academic research in many sectors. This study reviews the trends of open-source technology, its forms, and some industrial applications. As a case study of the use of open-source hardware and software in the mining industry, this study proposed a low-cost environmental monitoring system for nonmetallic underground mines to support mine safety and occupational health. The system was developed using open-source hardware, Arduino and 3D printer, to design the monitoring device, and open-source software, MIT App Inventor, to develop an Android application for smartphones to enable remote communication with the system. Field experiments were conducted at an underground tunnel and a nonmetallic underground mining site to assess the performance of the system in mobile and static modes, respectively. Although a few limitations related to the precision of the low-cost dust and gas sensors exist, the findings of the experiments show that the mining industry can benefit from open-source technology deployment when considering cost factors.

"Vertical material transport is one of the major challenges for the successful implementation of deep sea mining projects. The EU research project „Blue Mining” is focusing on sustainable solutions for deep sea mining operations, with one major goal being the advancement of Vertical Transport Systems (VTS). To investigate flow effects under realistic conditions, especially clogging effects, a 136 m high test facility for flow analysis in vertical transport has been constructed using available mining infrastructure. Tests are run in a closed circuit, using a system of downfall and riser pipelines connected to a compact sediment injection- and separation unit as well as the centrifugal pump. The riser is equipped with pressure sensors, as well as temperature sensors, flow meter, concentration meter and high speed camera to allow comprehensive analyses of the flow regime and behavior of transported material within the flow. Additional mobile measurement devices allow wear and tear analyses of pipe material. This paper focuses on the determining factors of the tests leading to the design as well as the installation and trial of the test facility itself and explains the used components and work principles. INTRODUCTION Since the 1970s several research projects had been conducted investigating in the possibility of deep sea mining. In recent times projects for deep sea mining operations have started again, considering the rising demand on natural resources, especially raw earth elements. Yet projects like the Nautilus project on the deposit Solwara 1 [1], or Japanese projects focusing on the region of Okinawa [2] and Chinese projects [3] planning on depths of “only” about 2,500 up to 3,000 m. Until now no economical deep sea mining project was realized, due to the enormous difficulties of deep sea environments. Vertical material transport is one of the major challenges for the successful implementation of deep sea mining projects, considering transportation heights up to 5 km. The EU research project „Blue Mining” is focusing on sustainable solutions for deep sea mining operations, with one major goal being the advancement of Vertical Transport Systems or VTS [4]. Critical parts of the system would be identified and investigated to deliver solutions and higher the technology readiness level to a level were planning of a pilot project can be considered. At first case examples for mining projects of seafloor massive sulfides (SMS, 1,600 m water depth) and manganese nodules (MnN, 5,000 m water depth) had been calculated on basis of economical frame conditions, such as planned production rates to be efficient. As depicted in Figure 1 two major possible systems had been used for comparison, airlift system and pump system, considering multiple pump stations or single pumps. Based on the results and comparisons for the calculated vertical transport systems critical components and flow effects had been identified."

This proposal, based on the CIEMAN Cajamarca - Hualgayoc initiative, focuses on “Transforming Abandoned Mine Lands’’ We aim to study and assess the feasibility of an innovative rehabilitation method. Contaminated soils will be moved from the upper to the lower site, encapsulated with geosynthetic barriers, and covered with topsoil. The decontaminated upper area will be used for planting trees and large-stemmed plants for hiking and tourism, while the lower encapsulated area will support livestock and short- stemmed crops. This study will evaluate the economic viability and multi-use potential of this technique, promoting sustainable land recovery in Cajamarca, Peru.

The term bentonite was first proposed in 1898 by Knight, a year after he had named this clay taylorite, because taylorite had been previously used for another mineral. The name taylorite was after the Taylor ranch, the site of the first mine, near Rock River, WY, and the name bentonite is from the Benton Shale in which the clay was thought at that time to occur. The Benton Shale was, in turn, named after Fort Benton, MT, located more than 640 km miles north of Rock River. Early in the 20th century, several geologists recognized that bentonite, mainly in beds in Cretaceous and Tertiary rocks, originated from transported volcanic materials. This recognition led to definitions based on origin, the one most widely quoted and generally accepted by geologists is the following definition by Ross and Shannon (1926): "Bentonite is a rock composed essentially of a crystalline clay-like mineral formed by devitrification and the accompanying chemical alteration of a glassy igneous material, usually a tuff or volcanic ash; and it often contains variable proportions of accessory crystal grains that were originally phenocrysts in the volcanic glass. These are feldspar (commonly orthoclase and oligoclase), biotite, quartz, pyroxenes, zircon, and various other minerals typical of volcanic rocks. The characteristic clay-like mineral has a micaceous habit and facile cleavage, high birefringence and a texture inherited from volcanic tuff or ash, and it is usually the mineral montmorillonite, but less often beidellite." The difficulty in applying the foregoing definition to bentonite as an industrial mineral commodity is that it is based on origin and is restricted to an ash, tuff, or volcanic glass parent material. Therefore, deposits consisting of the clay minerals required by this definition, but having uncertain origin or parent materials, cannot properly be called bentonite. Furthermore, many deposits in the western United States and in other countries that have formed from rocks other than the types required by the definition are being mined and sold as bentonite. Perhaps the best definition of bentonite as an industrial mineral is one given by R.E. Grim in a plenary lecture at the International Clay Conference (AIPEA) at Madrid, Spain, June 27, 1972. According to this redefinition, which will be used in this chapter, bentonite is a clay consisting essentially of smectite minerals (montmorillonite group of some usages), regardless of origin or occurrence. This definition solves the problem of the difference between the geologic and industrial usages of the term and overcomes the difficulty in assigning a name to smectite clay that formed from igneous rock other than ash, tuff, or glass, or those of sedimentary or uncertain origin. However, bentonite, when used with this meaning is still a rock term (consisting of more than one mineral), and it will not be possible to distinguish it from fuller's earth in many instances. One way of classifying bentonite is based on its swelling capacities when wet or added to water. Bentonite having sodium (Na+) as either the dominant or as an abundant exchangeable ion typically has very high swelling capacities and forms gel-like masses when added to water. Bentonite in which exchangeable calcium (Ca++) is more abundant than other ions has much lower swelling capacities than sodium varieties. Some calcium types swell little more than common clay, and most crumble into granular masses in water. Intermediate calcium-sodium bentonites, the so called mixed types, tend to swell moderately and to form gels of lesser volumes than equal masses of the sodium type bentonite. Because of the general relationship of swelling and exchangeable ion characteristics bentonite is commonly divided into the high swelling or sodium, low swelling or calcium, and moderate swelling or intermediate types. The term sub-bentonite (Davis et a]., 1940) is used inconsistently in industry for the low or moderate swelling varieties. The authors believe the use of this term should be discouraged because of its implication of low quality or low value and the lack of a mineralogical or use basis for it. In the United States bentonite is also classified by geographic location and the uses for which it is sold. Inasmuch as most of the low swelling calcium type occurs in states bordering the Gulf of Mexico, this variety is commonly called Southern bentonite. The largest high swelling sodium bentonite deposits and the major producing districts are in Wyoming and adjacent states. Therefore, this bentonite is commonly called the Wyoming or Western type. Such terms as drilling mud bentonite, foundry bond bentonite, and taconite bond bentonite relating directly to use are applied in marketing. Other terms including high and low yield bentonite, high and low gel bentonite, and high and low strength bentonite are also used to distinguish different grades. The varied classifications notwithstanding, bentonite occurs in so many different varieties that some cannot logically be classified according to any of the foregoing groupings. One of these types is hectorite, which is a high swelling lithium-bearing variety of smectite occurring mainly in California and adjacent states. It is, therefore, not a Wyoming type, and it occurs even farther west than the so called western bentonites. Others are bentonites having magnesium (Mg++) or hydrogen (H+) as the most abundant or dominant exchangeable ion. These types are neither sodium nor calcium varieties, and apparently some are low swelling, whereas others have rather high swelling capacities. The analysis for total cyanides (CN, or the cyanide due to the combination of free, weakly associated and refractory cyanide complexes) is required by most regulatory agencies for determination of effluent compliance. This method requires a distillation of the sample at low pH's and is most often sent to contract laboratories at a high time and monetary cost. This paper describes a new micro­distillation apparatus which allows for a multiple of CN,"' analyses to be carried out simultaneously saving both time and money. It can be used in the field, since only electrical power is required for the method. While not being appropriate for reporting values to the respective regulatory agencies as of yet, it is quite valuable for screening a large number of samples prior to submission of the samples to a contract lab for "official" reporting.

The enthusiasm with which individuals have participated in mineral exploration in the development of this country testifies to the fact that there was once a very real probability of making a worthwhile discovery. Over the years, the discovery and subsequent exploitation of the accessible ore deposits have made the finding of new deposits progressively more difficult. Present day mineral exploration has evolved from the lone prospector with the grubstaker behind him to a very costly and complex business, involving large sums of money and a staff of experts in the fields of exploration technology. Exploration today must be carried out on a large scale to be profitable. With the involvement of large amounts of capital, there has been a good deal of interest in methods of optimization of the allocation of the resources of a firm 'engaged in mineral exploration. As a step toward this, mathematical models have been formulated which are designed to quantify those variables of mineral exploration in such a manner that they can be integrated with all phases of the firms operations so as to optimize its profit objective or more simply, to make exploration more efficient and effective.

"As human beings, we have managed risk since the dawn of the ages and have been adept at doing so. In order to survive, we hunted or gathered. If we did not take enough risk, we died. If we took much risk, we died (Fig. 1). As individuals and tribes, risk had to be optimized to maximize our chances to thrive, as individuals and as tribes.In today’s world, the risks are vastly different, but in order to thrive, these must be managed. And no industry knows this as much as mining. In fact, the International Council of Mining & Metals (ICMM) has proposed the Critical Risk Model (Fig. 2) as a means of identifying critical risk, critical controls and associated performance standards. The ICMM focuses on sustainable development performance in the mining and metals industry. It has 23 members, representing some of the largest mining companies in the world.This approach is going to help the mining industry. But it must be applied effectively, with the acknowledgment that the system alone cannot be effective. We can say this confidently, as even companies known for the strength of their risk and safety management systems continue to experience significant incidents, and, in some cases, catastrophes. Why does that happen when all safety metrics, including injury rate, are pointing in the right direction? In the view of the author, it is only when leadership, culture and systems work in complete harmony that the resilience of an organization to manage its significant risk is at an optimal level. It remains an ongoing leadership challenge to maintain that balance and the optimal mindset in the organization. So how do you maintain that special balance?Let’s start with a basic premise. Leadership, supported by simple effective systems, creates culture which creates outcomes. Everyone going home safely is an outcome, as is cost effective operations, and to achieve those outcomes efficiently, the organization must focus on the inputs. And those inputs include effective leadership, effective systems (for the purposes of this article, risk and health, safety and environment (HSE) systems), good planning, stable operations and competent workers. This article will focus on gaining maximum performance from your risk management system."

The Australian coal industry over recent years has experienced the situation whereby exploration and mine development are moving into geographical areas where the coal seams have never been mined to any extent in the past, if at all, and particularly where there is no history of experience in preparation of these seams. Additionally, the demands have been such that the development of a mine up to production stage should proceed with minimum delay. This is a situation which is of some importance and concern, in view of the coal quality requirements now experienced within world markets which can only be met, in most cases, by careful preparation. Costs are such that the preparation plant should operate as required by the situation and with maximum efficiency, which means that laboratoty information of breakage and washability characteristics which are required for preparation plant design should be accurate and available as soon as possible, even to a certain extent during the progress of the exploration.

Observations of calcite and opal in cavities in the unsaturated zone at Yucca Mountain indicate that: 1) seeps are not regularly spaced in underground workings and not all fractures sustain flow, 2) many cavities represent sites of seepage that have remained stable for millions of years, 3) typically there is no evidence (such as dripstone) for seepage dripping into cavities from their ceilings, and 4) seepage is not likely to be greater than about 1 liter of water per year (per 5-m-long drift) based on calcite abundances observed in the ESF. This estimate of seepage is significantly lower than that used for performance assessment.

The' Institute of Ceramics and the Institute of Silicate Chemistry, Academy of Sciences, USSR, were founded in Leningrad. The work now going on in these various research' institutes covers every branch of silicate science and ceramics The impetus behind such establishment of special¬ized laboratories is no doubt due to the 5-year plans and the necessity of improving the scientific knowledge regarding the materials being used and the products being manufactured.

In mechanized tunnelling operations performance, consumption and safety are main factors for jobsites. One of the most important components effecting these factors, especially in slurry TBM operations, are Slurry Treatment Plants (STPs). Inadequate/ suboptimally dimensioned and designed STPs create bottlenecks for tunnelling operation and jeopardize time schedules and performance. Inefficiently planned STPs could drastically increase consumption figures such as electrical power, bentonite, water and polymers, etc. Inaccurately selected and treated suspension properties can cause a high-risk potential for the whole job. This paper debates the relevant key parameters for STPs from start to finish of a project and its results in influencing factors from the manufacturer´s point of view.

The definition of high sulfur coal varies from plant to plant and is subject to changes over time as the environmental regulations change. In plants constructed after September 1978 hardly any domestic coal can currently be burned without the use of Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) because a 70 percent reduction in potential S02 emission is mandatory even when the potential emission is less than 0.6 lbs. S02/106 Btu heat input. On the other hand older power plants may in many cases be legally emitting up to 6 lbs. S02/106 Btu or more under some State Implementation Plans (SIP). The Clean Air Act requires, however, that in the long run all stationary sources of S02 pollution must abide by the ceiling of 1.2 lbs S02/10 Btu heat input.. Coals with a potential to exceed this limit must, therefore, be considered as high sulfur coals. Such a definition would be unrealistic because many SIP's aim at an emission level of 1.8 to 2.0 lbs. SO2/106 Btu for existing plants and a stricter limit does not appear to be enforceable in the next 5 to 10 years. As a result, coals with an emission potential of greater than 2.0 lbs of S02 per 10 Btu heat input are considered high sulfur coals for the purpose of this investigation. Based on this definition and the 1984 actual consumption of coals by U.S. electric utilities (table 1) only 7 out of the 24 coal producing states could be categorized as low sulfur states. The actual S02 pollution, however, depends on total tonnage of a type of coal as well as the sulfur content of the coal. Table 1 also indicates that only 6 states--Kentucky, Illinois, West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Indiana-account for nearly 77 percent of S02 pollution potential in the United States. These 6 states have therefore been chosen for this investigation.

Commissioning a mineral processing plant has always been a challenging task. The process includes pre- operational verification, dry and wet commissioning, and a gradual ramp-up to full production, all of which must be executed within the shortest possible timeframe, requiring numerous highly interdependent tasks to be conducted concurrently. This phase is under scrutiny by shareholders, corporate management, and other stakeholders who are keen to see a return on investment as the operation starts yielding results. Despite extensive documentation in the literature highlighting its significance, the impact of the commissioning phase remains underestimated in contemporary mining projects. This paper provides an overview of the commissioning process and its associated challenges before focusing on a critical success factor: building a dedicated commissioning team with the required competencies and personality profiles. The roadmap to achieving an efficient plant start-up is outlined. Drawing on over 15 years of experience with more than 20 concentrator commissioning and start-ups, a general framework is presented to maximize success. This method emphasizes the crucial role of the operation and metallurgy team in supporting these projects. Finally, insights from Soutex’s involvement in multiple start-ups are shared, offering lessons learned that emphasize best practices and challenges encountered in expediting the ramp-up process while maintaining high Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) standards.

The Bureau of Mines, U. S. Department of the Interior, is conducting research on a dewatering technique for fine particles generated during the mineral beneficiation process that will recover a portion of the water now being lost using conventional waste disposal methods and significantly reduce the time required for land reclamation. The technique utilizes a flocculant, polyethylene oxide (PEO), that forms strong stable flocs that can be dewatered rapidly on static and/or rotary screens. In field tests, phosphate clay waste has been dewatered from a nominal 2.5 percent solids to greater than 20 percent solids. In other field tests, coal-clay waste has been dewatered from a nominal 3 percent solids to greater than 55 percent solids, in addition, small-scale continuous tests have shown that bentonitic clays can be dewatered from 12 percent solids to 40 percent solids.

"The proposed Channel Tunnel is a critical component of the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission’s (SFPUC) Central Bayside System Improvements Project (CBSIP), which is a key element of a $6.9-billion sewer system improvement program to upgrade its aging and seismically vulnerable wastewater facilities. The tunnel will provide gravity conveyance and storage of combined sewage flows from the northeast sector of San Francisco, CA to the Southeast Water Pollution Control Plant for treatment. The tunnel will be approximately 2.7 km (1.7 miles) long and 7.3 m (24 ft) in internal diameter. It will utilize a single-pass precast concrete segmental lining system. Tunneling challenges include excavating with pressurized face tunnel boring machine (TBM) technology through highly variable ground conditions including the Franciscan Complex (rock and mélange), clayey/silty sands, stiff to hard clay (Old Bay Clay) and mixed-face conditions. The project will also require several deep shafts that will be technically challenging. Project backgroundThe SFPUC is a department of the City and County of San Francisco, CA that provides municipal power, drinking water and wastewater services to San Francisco.San Francisco’s combined sewer system collects both wastewater and stormwater in the same sewers, which is then pumped, treated to stringent state standards and discharged into the San Francisco Bay and Pacific Ocean. The sewer system includes tunnels, large storage/transport boxes, 1,600 km (1,000 miles) of collection sewers, 28 pump stations and three wastewater treatment plants. After decades of service, much of the system is nearing the end of its useful life.The existing system is also vulnerable to seismic damage. During the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, damage to SFPUC wastewater infrastructure was extensive. This included the 3,415 m (11,200-ft) long, 1.7m (66-in.) diameter Channel Force Main, built in 1976, and a critical component of the conveyance system. The Channel Force Main carries 70 percent of the bayside dry weather sewage flow from the northern and central part of the city to the Southeast Water Pollution Control Plant for treatment. It is antiquated, not pile-supported and not constructed to current seismic codes. There is also currently no conveyance redundancy for north/central bayside flows to the treatment plant. Figure 1 shows the SFPUC’s wastewater collection system, the existing Channel Force Main and the project location."

"While wearable technology has been garnering attention in the consumer market, enterprise and industry have just begun exploring its potential applications. Since February 2014, Motion Metrics International has been working in collaboration with Vandrico Solutions Inc. to apply wearable technology to improve productivity and safety in the mining industry.This article discusses the value proposition of using wearable technology to deliver critical notifications in mining. The advantages and disadvantages of various form factors are explored. The challenges, both specific to mining and in general to wearable technology, are defined. Finally, the concept of MetricsGear, the first wearable technology platform developed for mining by Motion Metrics International in collaboration with Vandrico Solutions Inc., is described. MetricsGear is designed to notify the user with minimal distraction to keep the user focused on his or her primary task and aware of mission-critical events. This focus and awareness allows the user to work more efficiently and safely. The mining process consists of a series of intricate stages, where certain events or conditions in one stage can have a huge impact on other stages. The notification of these critical events or conditions is vital for ensuring the overall efficiency of the mining process. Critical notifications can be classified as two types: timecritical events and contextual information. Time-critical events are situations where a timely response from a responder can have a significant impact on seizing an opportunity or mitigating cost. Some human-computer interaction (HCI) experts classify notification types based on the interruption, reaction and comprehension (IRC) framework. Time-critical events are classified to have high interruption, high reaction and low comprehension due to their urgency. The responder should have just enough information to identify the crisis and react as soon as possible (Chow, 2014). For example, when a tooth is lost during shovel operation, it is necessary to recover the missing tooth before it jams the primary crusher. The consequence of missing this critical time period is a jammed crusher that can cause the mine to be out of production until the jammed tooth is extracted (Baumann, 2013). In this case, the responder only needs to see an image to confirm if the tooth is missing and information to identify which equipment and when the tooth went missing (Fig. 1)."

Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), in cooperation with mine operators, conducted a study of heat stress exposures among mine rescue workers in underground mines. Mine rescue workers face extreme heat loads as they enter hot and poorly ventilated environments, particularly when they are wearing breathing apparatuses. The burden of wearing a closed-circuit breathing apparatus (CCBA), the inability to drink fluids for extended periods of time, and the potential for ventilation disruptions and fires combine to increase the risk of heat illness during a response to an emergency. In this research, ambient environmental conditions and heat strain indicators were measured using conventional ventilation monitoring tools during mine rescue training exercises. Heat strain was measured with an ingestible temperature-sensing pill that measured core temperature continuously. In addition, a heart-rate monitoring chest strap was used to indicate physical strain resulting from physical activity and heat. Both core temperature and heart rate data were trans-mitted to a remote recorder worn by a rescuer and time-stamped. Team activities were also observed to determine the contribution of work rate to a person’s total heat load. The effectiveness of several engineering controls, such as cooling the air inhaled by rescuers through an apparatus, wearing cooling vests, and supplying water through the CCBA masks, were investigated. Administrative controls, such as limiting the duration of exposure and controlling the work rate through forced-rest regimens, were also evaluated. Results to date are discussed, and tools for evaluating team condition and estimating the length of time it would be safe for rescuers to work are proposed.
