Two process enhancements for the biological oxidative pretreatment of sulfidic gold ore for subsequent treatment with cyanide are discussed. These are the use of a high areal density ring and pin packing (BioBalls™) as substrate, and the use of a novel biological ferric generator. The BioBall™ packing when coated with concentrates for heap leach processing offers higher areal densities, while leaving more open volume for fluid flow than more commonly used substrates such as aggregate. An oxidation rate study was performed on crushed auriferous arsenopyrite whole ore to demonstrate the benefits of using the packing. The auriferous arsenopyrite grading 2.9% Fe and .212 OPT gold was 50 percent oxidized in 24 days. The biological ferric generator is a passive air-side trickle bed reactor that efficiently converts ferrous to ferric in a process stream. Conversion rates of .8g/L h ferrous to ferric are routinely obtained. Although the biologically generated ferric solutions have not yet been tested on gold ores or concentrates, prior work has demonstrated that the high ferric solutions which will result in rapid oxidation of sulfidic gold ores or concentrates.

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) has undertaken an under-ground transit project to extend public transportation service from downtown Boston to the South Boston Piers area. This new system, known as the Transit way, will connect existing subway lines to this area which is comprised of approximately 300 acres, in light of the potential for 21 million square feet of development by 2010. This system includes construction of a concrete immersed tube tunnel crossing of Fort Point Channel. The crossing will be accomplished in the highly congested setting of down-town Boston and will be located just to the north of the famous Boston Tea Party ship exhibit and amid major Central Artery Construction activity. The most recent concrete tube constructed in the United States was in 1962. The Fort Point Channel Crossing will employ current design and construction methods commonly utilized in the Netherlands, Australia, Hong Kong and elsewhere. This paper will present the design philosophy, planning, and evaluation of alternative crossing methods which led to the selection of the concrete immersed tube tunnel and construction techniques envisioned for this particular application.

Getting the best match between truck and haul road requires examining the cost effects of many factors. Most mines use a bottom line measure based on cost per ton of material moved. This measure focuses on the two components of truck haulage cost per ton: productivity (or performance) and operating cost. For specific tasks, productivity can be measured or predicted using either field measurement or modeling. Individual tasks can be combined to provide a larger scale, longer term net figure for total mine output. True cost is more difficult to capture. Factors are time- and task-oriented and can be influenced by a summation of factors over a truck's lifetime. For example, "allocated" costs, such as owning (depreciation) and some repair costs, are spread over long periods. Items such as fuel and tires can be tied more directly to certain tasks. This article focuses on the more direct, task-oriented factors that affect truck productivity and cost. INTRODUCTION Several recent estimates have predicted that the extent of underground tunneling in the future will far surpass past records. It is also emphasized that the expected increase depends largely on the cost of tunneling and hence every effort should be made to reduce this price. The largest items of expense in some tunneling programs are not related to the technical problems encountered but rather the human factors involved in contracting and executing the project. In order to examine the mutual interactions between the groups involved in tunnel programs, the Engineering Foundation sponsored a conference on "Owner-Engineer-Contractor Relations in Tunneling", July 12-16, 1971 at Deerfield, Massachusetts. The meeting was cosponsored by the Associated General Contractors of America and the Construction Division of the American Society of Civil Engineers. The seminar was attended by representatives of contractors, owners, and engineers who drafted and approved a set of recommendations based on the ideas generated during the discussions. It was also suggested that the resulting document be given as wide publicity as possible amongst the underground construction community. The First Annual Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference provides an excellent forum for this presentation.

Introduction The Mineral Resources Institute, The University of Alabama, has for the past three years been engaged in a program to develop a beneficiation system for eastern (Devonian) oil shales. One objective of that program was to evaluate advanced technologies for effecting a kerogen-mineral matter separation. Column flotation was among the advanced technologies selected for evaluation. Early in the program it was shown that column flotation was superior to conventional (mechanical) flotation and to the other advanced technologies being evaluated. The investigation then proceeded toward the further objective of defining the optimum operating conditions for column flotation. One observation made in the course of optimization testing was that introducing the feed into the froth (above the pulp-froth interface) resulted in an improved combination of concentrate grade and kerogen recovery. This observation was reported in a previous paper (Schultz and Bates, 1989). Because the practice of maintaining the pulp froth interface below the feed point is contrary to "conventional" practice, it was decided to subject the observation to a systematic series of tests. This paper describes a recent series of tests and the results that were obtained.

Today, after about 30 years of development, computer-based analysis of geoscience data has reached a mature phase. From the tentative early beginnings recorded in the proceedings of the APCOM meetings, geoscientists are now able to emphasize the need for both pertinent mathematical/statistical models and computer hardware and software. From those models that are well understood in the disciplines of statistics and mathematics and for which effective computational methods are available, practitioners select and develop methodology for their particular purposes. Computer hardware is typically assembled from off-the- shelf components now readily available, with particular emphasis, whenever feasible, on microcomputers for reasons of economy and control by the scientific or engineering user rather than by a bureaucratic computer center. Computer software may be written by the user in high level languages such as Pascal, FORTRAN, or LISP. However, more often today geoscientists use routines available in spreadsheets, data bases, or statistical packages. In so doing, they save time and, programming costs and take advantage of routines written and maintained by large, well- established organizations, while losing the flexibility in specifying exact input/output afforded by writing in a high level language.

In late 1993, Inco Ltd. completed a $600-million environmental improvement project at its Sudbury, Ontario operations -the largest single environmental project ever undertaken by a Canadian corporation. Efficient new facilities and innovative technologies installed during the course of the project have also significantly improved Inco's productivity and competitiveness. In early May 1994, a panel of 18 Inco authors contributed to a Technical Forum, "Environmental Programs at Sudbury," presented at the 96th Annual General Meeting of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) in Toronto. Their papers have been published in CIM's Toronto `94 Proceedings Volume, pp. 62-77. The following report draws primarily on discussions of Inco's milling and smelting operations published in the Proceedings Volume. The Proceedings Volume also includes papers on the acid and oxygen plants and on engineering, construction and commissioning of the project. Load-Haul-Dump machines (LHDs) have contributed significantly to high productivity in hard-rock mining in recent years and are now being introduced into the coal mining industry (Rao, Haycocks and Lucas, 1975; Mining Magazine, 1975). The superiority of the LHD when compared to loader-plus- shuttle-cars has been demonstrated for several operations (Rao et al., 1975), and the number of manufacturers now in the coal mining LHD market (Mining Magazine, 1975) indicates that the concept will be of considerable future importance in the U.S. coal industry. Currently more than 90 percent of U.S. underground coal production is obtained by room-and-pillar methods (Coal Age, 1976). This system presents certain complexities with regard to haulage analysis; among these are constriction of travel routes, variation of haulage distances as different faces are worked, and change in the overall physical layout as mining progresses. Furthermore, current experiments in the use of more than one continuous miner in a section (Mining Magazine, 1975; Coal Age, 1976) suggest the possibility of highly intensive mining operations, with loading proceeding from more than one point simultaneously, in which the overall patterns for machine movements must be carefully arranged to minimize delays.

INTRODUCTION The environmental requirements of the next section of Washington, D.C. METRO subway tunnels present unique challenges to the Contractor. The 14th Street Tunnels contract includes twin 975 m (3200 linear ft) soft ground tunnels. A stringent environmental soil and groundwater monitoring and free product recovery program was specified by the owner. A project-wide dewatering program hinges on satisfactory completion of the environmental requirements. Implementation of the Contractor's environmental program is discussed, including the pros and cons of the program, as they relate to progress of the project. Environmental issues on tunneling projects have become an important part of the urban tunnel construction process. Delays associated with environmental issues can have a major cost impact on tunneling projects. This paper will discuss the first of five Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) tunnel and station contracts awarded in 1994. These contracts are part of WMATA's Fast Track Plan to complete the original 166 km (103 mile) system by 2001. As such, stringent environmental requirements have been specified as a part of these contracts to limit delays associated with local regulators in order that the tunnels may be constructed on schedule.

Recent advancements in computer hardware have led to the development of new ventilation planning software for PC's. These programs now can be run more quickly and can display their outputs with graphical techniques. Only a few of the existing programs have the capability to display the output data graphically on plotters. Graphical presentation of ventilation simulation data is essential for quick and sure comparisons of alternative analyses. Recently a noticeable growth has occurred in the application of graphics for display and interpretation of the data that have been developed by simulation procedures. The process of mine ventilation network analyses used for planning and design can benefit from this development. The authors describe and present graphics-assisted software that has been developed to work with a mine ventilation simulation program. This software has some of the following features: - graphic editor on screen, - graphical display of output data on screen (EGA, VGA), - graphical display on plotter or printer, - scaling capability (desired part of the entire schematic can be displayed), and - such values as flow, pressure loss, gas concentration for branches, and pressure and elevation at junctions can be presented as labels.

INTRODUCTION This paper will update the status of small sized tunnel boring machines used in both the Mining and Civil Industries. I will mention a) new developments in small size hard ground tunnel boring machines, b) review North American performance records of the Atlas Copco Mini/Midi Fullfacers, and c) compare relative costs in driving a 1200m (4000 ft) typical utility tunnel using a leased TBM versus the conventional drill and blast method. NEW DEVELOPMENTS JARVA MACHINES Of all small rock tunnel boring machines currently in use, the Jarva MARK VI and MARK VIII are receiving the most enthusiastic acceptance. These circular fullface borers using usually 15 inch single disc cutters (manufactured also by Jarva) are designed on the 'T' bracing principle. Previously, Jarva's line of tunnel boring machines, even their smallest, was designed on the 'X' or double diagonal bracing configuration with a gripper in each quadrant. In small tunnels where net room is so very important, the 'T' scheme with gripping only at the spring line nets precious room around the cutter unit for passage of men and supplies. This paper consists of a review of the development and application of spherical charge blasting at Inco Metals Company. Topics will include the Livingston Strain Equation, the field data required for its use in full scale operation, the type of ground in which mining has been carried out, explosives in use and their characteristics and finally, an overview of actual production applications. These applications include Primary Stope Mining, Secondary Mining Against Fill, Mining a Faulted Ore Zone and Drop Raise Blasting. INTRODUCTION Crater blasting in itself has been in use for over twenty years, but only recently has the technique been combined with a spherical size charge to form the Vertical Retreat Mining Method. This article endeavours to put the Livingston Strain Equation in a practical light, to describe several actual hard rock applications, and the results achieved in each case. THE LIVINGSTON STRAIN ENERGY EQUATION C.W. Livingston put forward the following equation as a standard means of determining the optimum burden required for full crater production blasting. The constant "E" is included in an attempt to recognize secondary breakage caused by strain waves.

INTRODUCTION The Southern California Rapid Transit District has commenced Preliminary Engineering for an 18 mile Metro Rail Project. This initial line will consist of approximate 36 miles of single track tunnel and 16 subsurface stations. The estimated cost of $1.2 Billion in 1978 dollars, places it in the category of a major public works project. During the planning phase of this project, particular attention was paid to the National Academy of Science Reports, "Better Contracting for Underground Construction" (1974), "Better Management of Major Underground Construction Projects" (1978), and "Management of Urban Construction Programs" (1980). The improved transportation service that this project will furnish the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area will result in significant benefits that will add immensely to the economic well being of the community-which is one of Webster's definitions of improved productivity. In 1969 and 1974, sales tax ballot issues were not adopted by the electorate of the county mainly because the pre-ponderous of County voters are outside the City of Los Angeles.

Changes in the thermal-oxidation behavior and other properties of gold-bearing waste activated carbon when milled in both a ball mill and a vibratory mill were investigated. It was found that significant changes occurred in the oxidation temperature of the vibration-milled waste carbon as a result of increases in surface area and mechano-chemical activation. The mechano-chemical action brought about modifications in the crystal structure of the waste carbon. As a result, the vibration-milled sample was completely oxidized at a temperature of 450°C. Thus, the study established that vibration milling is a better way of lowering the temperature of oxidation of the waste carbon. Furthermore, the gold was found to be concentrated in the ash and, when leached with cyanide for 20 hrs, the gold recoveries from a sample having a head grade of 2 kg/t was 99.5% for the vibration-milled sample and 82% for the ball-milled sample. The lower gold recovery for the ball-milled sample was attributed to sintering of the ash, which was caused by the higher temperature required for its oxidation.

In recent years attempts have been made to fight open and intensive mine fires by the use of special extinguishers, which are able to produce great volumes of inert gases directed into the fire zone. These extinguishers are derived from turbo-jet engines used in aircrafts and adopted for operations in mine conditions. The purpose of this paper is to draw the attention to a computer simulation method, enabling studies of dynamical behaviour of mine ventilation processes disturbed by open fires, which are also influenced by measures taken during fire fighting actions i.a. the mentioned operating extinguishers. The first part of this paper gives an account of the principles on which the computer simulation program, concerning the non- steady mine ventilation process, the fire as a heat source and the extinguisher as a source of inert gas and moisture has been based. The next part of this paper deals with simplifying assumptions and the subsequent limitations of the derived simulation pro- gram. Finally, from an example of a computer simulation, the results will be presented and relations shown between parameters characterising the ventilation process during the fire fighting action.

Shotcrete drift linings at the Climax Mine of the Climax Molybdenum Company have undergone four years of extensive evaluations as a replacement for thick poured-in-place concrete linings. Any drift lining at Climax must be able to withstand the rigors of undercut and secondary blasting, weight problems induced by panel caving, and the abrasion of slusher mining. Examined here are the conclusions reached so far on shotcrete drift linings which have not yet completed the approximately six-year cycle from development to ore exhaustion. Properly applied shotcrete is an adequate drift lining for all phases of the Climax panel caving system of mining. Undercut blasting will damage shotcrete unless blasts are correctly timed. Weight problems will destroy shotcrete drift linings as efficiently as it will destroy concrete or steel support systems. Abrasion and secondary blasting results are inconclusive as the shotcrete lined slusher drifts have not entered the ore production stage of the mining cycle. In addition to drift linings, Climax has found shotcrete to be invaluable for lining large underground shops, for temporary support systems, for permanent ventilation bulkheads and for the repair of abraded or weight damage concrete lined slusher and haulage drifts.

INTRODUCTION The state of the art of soft-ground tunneling was discussed in detail by the senior author at the 7th International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering held in Mexico City in 1969. Little can be gained by repeating the information assembled at that time. Hence, in this report, only the briefest summary will be given of the overall state of the art and attention will be concentrated on trends and developments since 1969. A characteristic of recent developments is the continued trend toward use of shields and excavating machines. The implications of this trend with respect to design and construction, and particularly with respect to the treatment of unfavorable ground conditions, will be examined. Settlement associated with lost ground, a subject as old as tunneling itself, will be reviewed and methods will be considered for its reduction. Design of tunnel supports was discussed in detail in 1969 with respect to essentially rigid or essentially flexible types of linings. In this report, a definition of flexibility will be considered and design procedures suggested for linings of flexibility intermediate between the two extremes.

Introduction A new mining agenda is before us. Born of government policies and world economies, the years ahead will show reduced growth. Metals, mining, and most other natural resource industries are inflation dependant and capital intensive. For these, a long period of contraction of outmoded and costly capacity will evolve. In some cases, this will be supplanted by new, lower cost capacity. But this will occur only if the cost of production - including cash operating and debt service costs - comes in at or below current market conditions. The industrial outlook for metals mining can be characterized as bearish. A US bank economist said mining companies planning their five-year forecasts should take current market conditions and straight-line them to the end of the decade. With low growth and low inflation, the real price of metals will remain flat or decline slightly. As a result, capital funding will be problematic. The low-cost producer will succeed. That means only the producer with low cash costs and low principal and interest costs per unit of production, will succeed. Gaining a perspective One must look back 30 years to see the evolution of the capital markets, for metal mine financing. This period can be divided into two economic periods. The 1950s were a time of stable economics. Mining companies earned and reported good profits. They had good corporate creditworthiness. In essence, mining companies of the 1950s were highly self-reliant. When equity infusions were needed, they were easily obtained. Financial management kept long-term debt low. Fixed rate, long-term financing was readily available in the long-term bond markets. The commercial banks of the 1950s were rarely used by the mining industry. When necessary, mining companies went to the banks for short-term financing - the kind that was needed for working capital requirements. Changing rhythms In the old rhythm there was an orderly market. Even into the mid-1960s, 75% of world annual copper production was controlled by eight companies: two in the UK, one in Belgium, and five in the US. During times of poor market demand, these producers would control supplies to the market. They took their losses out of retained earnings. Capital was easily restored during the ensuing good times. The new rhythm called for copper to be an economic means to a political end. Third World copper producers brushed aside the market fundamentals of commodity economics. Yet, the political solutions of these countries - their lack of response to the market - have seldom achieved their original objectives. Each commodity has its own old and new rhythm. Aluminum may have a similar rhythm, coming 10 to 20 years later than copper. By the late 1960s, changes were occurring. Inflation was on the rise. Ore reserve quality was falling. As a result, capital expenditures were necessary to maintain existing output. These costs created an increase in corporate leverage, thus adding to inflation and rising interest rates. Indicators A comparison of the gross national product (GNP) deflator index, consumer price index, and the metal mining deflator index is instructive. (Fig. 1 and Table 1). With 1972 equal to 1, note that the metal mining deflator reached its lowest point in 1967. From that point, the metal mining deflator has accelerated severely for 16 years. Only two minor downturns occurred during the business recessions of the mid-1970s and the early 1980s. In essence, Fig. 1 shows that while GNP has grown modestly, a miner's dollar in 1972 would require $3.48 in 1980. This is an almost 17% compounded growth rate over that eight-year period. Beginning in the late 1960s, for the first time in mine financing, the risk of success shifted from the corporate balance sheet to third parties. Limited-resource financings were taken up by banking syndicates that accepted certain of these risks. The lender needed to be well acquainted with the types of risks to be evaluated. These include resource quality and quantity, construction and completion, capital and operations costs, market risks, force majeure, and political and exchange rate risks. Project financings became the basis whereby mining companies were able to maintain their borrowing capacities. In essence, the lender was willing to share some of the project risk while only receiving lenders' returns on these investments. The development of variousworks on automatising of operational processes at coal¬extractive and coal-mining enterprises introduces an ever growing necessity to carry out investigations in the wide range of problems concerning the possibitity of joint functioning of different levels, which seems impossible without the use of integrated systems of passing on and prossessing the information on the basis of modern calculating machines and other means of automation. This view on the problem of automation of the enterprise operation presupposes that the structure of automated operational dispatcher control (AODC) should be very closely connected with that of integrated data processing system! In this case the AODC structure from the point of view of automation of its functions (or operations), i.e. from the point of view of informational techniques coinsides in general with the structure of dispersed information and calculating network (ICN), realizing the passing on and processing of the information as well as solving the functional tasks on the basis of local calculating networks of electrical calculating machines with correspond to different levels of AODC and located with regard to productional hierarchy of operational dispatcher control (ODC). In this approach however the use of dispersed, ICN gives opportunity to. realize the possibility of action only with realisation on the CM of algorithmic' task of ODC, when a dispatcher 'is the lastto make a final decision.. At the mining enterprises it's rather difficult for a dispatcher to make a final decision because of the great variaty of productional situations, the presence of contradictions and a number of other subjective factors which often lead to the dispatcher's mistaks causing great material losses of the enterprise. Hence the necessity arises to automize and formalize making a decision and including the expert systems (ES) into the ontour of AODC, which enables the dispatcher 2to get a neeessary advice in different situations, especially in case ofemergency on the basis of establishing the mechanism of logical layout of non-formalized data base (DB) procedures relying upon the background knowledge and experience of experts. The presently presented in this paper theory of establishing the. ISAODC on the basis of dispersed ICN and expert systems is aimed at trasformation ofoperational' tasks of the higher level into the technological ones, at solving the tasks of diagnostics and forseeing of the process of production, with a dispatcher getting an opportunity of making qualitative and effective decision concerrning the choice of operational impacts in actual time on the basis of generalization the realisation of presented conception must, as has been already mentioned, be accomplished only on the basis of the foundatoin of the united dispersed informational - calculating network of electrical calculating machines.. This includes ICN which would be operating in . different operational contours. . From what has just been said it followsthat the ISAODC Structure will conside with that of DICN (in our case) and hence all the problems of ISAODC structure would be regarded as the questions of DICN.

Problems in new strip mine development is a subject that could require several days to cover adequately. Coupled with the fertile imagination of television writers, we could probably expand it into a series rivaling Gunsmoke in longevity with just as many shootouts at sundown. It would-of course-be subject to a high Neilson Rating. To bring the subject into perspective, we will limit the comments to a general discussion covering western strip coal developments. Stimulated by increased demand for low sulfur coal, surface mineable western coal operations began a shift into high gear approximately four years ago. Then came last year's "energy crisis" that increased the pressure on coal development not only in the west, but nationwide. Several eastern power plants having dual oil and coal burning facilities were directed to discontinue using oil. Also, a number of new south and southwestern power plants scheduled to burn natural gas or of I commenced an ordered conversion to other fuels, namely, coal. The involved utilities with reserve positions accelerated their planning while others began the search for long-term commitments from coal producing companies. In addition, announcements were made for proposed mine mouth coal gasification projects in New Mexico, Wyoming, and North Dakota.
