The great increase in post-World War I1 use of molybdenum was made possible by discoveries of that metal in porphyry molybdenum and porphyry copper deposits. This section documents significant porphyry molybdenum discoveries of the post-war period. The most important discovery was Henderson in Colorado. It is not only one of the world's largest and richest, but it was found by a team of geologists who defined the hood model and tested it successfully at Henderson. Under the leadership of Stewart Wallace, these scientists established a set of criteria for exploration for Henderson-type de- posits that was copied by the industry. The discovery bf vertical cylinder type porphyry molybdenum deposits was less renowned. Boss Mountain in British Columbia and then Mt. Pleasant in New Brunswick were given relatively scant notice, compared with the Henderson discovery. However, these deposits have geometrics distinct from that found in the typical hood, which directly affects their exploration characteristics. Mt. Pleasant, included in this section, is a well defined, near vertical breccia pipe. Both the Henderson and Mt. Pleasant discoveries were made by relatively small groups operating independently of the bureaucracy that characterizes large corporations. The management role in each case was one of encouragement. In addition, Wallace had the beneficial experience of working for Climax, whose objective was the discovery of porphyry molybdenum deposits. Henderson was the natural outgrowth of the exploration effort by those who studied and understood the Climax deposit.

Most miners know that Latin America's major mineral areas are in the mountains of Mexico and down the backbone of the Andes in South America. These areas comprise some of the more rugged and challenging parts of the world's geography, and the risks of doing business in these areas are just as difficult as the impressive task of extracting and processing ores. However, Latin America does contain mineral deposits, some untouched and many to be discovered, that convince venturesome people that the tremendous effort required to mine them will be worthwhile. The rewards have often been adequate in the past. Hopefully, they will be in the future. Background The safest statement that can be made about Latin America is that the "ballgame is constantly changing." Here are some examples: Chile. Under President Frei in the 1960s, Chile welcomed foreign mining interests, even though the government was acquiring significant ownership interests in the big copper properties. Then, under Allende in the 1970s, the big mines were taken over and compensation was denied on various grounds including the allegation that extraordinary profits had been made that should have been taxed. After Allende, an about-face was made in policy; former owners of the expropriated mines received some compensation and new foreign investment was seriously welcomed. INTRODUCTION Only in recent years have the environmental hazards associated with mining and tunneling operations been fully acknowledged and determined remedial action undertaken. The nature of these excavation operations leads to a wide diversity of hazards spanning mechanical, electrical, chemical, environmental, and physiological. The most insidious of these are unquestionably the environmental ones which have the greatest long-term effect and are the most difficult to pinpoint and monitor. It is the atmospheric contaminants that lead to a significantly greater illness and mortality rate among miners. Dust is the most prevalent, hence most important of the atmospheric contaminants. Respirable particles lead to diseases characteristic of many mining operations: coal workers pneumoconiosis, asbestiosis, silicosis, talcosis, anthrocosis, etc. But toxic and suffocating gases can be equally insidious and the most innocuous pollutant, methane, leads to the most imminently disastrous results of all - explosion and fire. This means that truly effective monitoring of the environmental hazards in tunneling cannot be limited to a few simple standard check measurements. It must include the most precise measurements we can make for specific, documented hazards and even for factors, such as noise and heat stress, not immediately obvious as hazards. The Federal Metal and Nonmetallic Mine Safety Act and more recent Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards are clearly designed to match such effective monitoring. Sustainable development is becoming increasingly more important for the mining industry and therefore mining companies should be able to measure their progress towards sustainability. Greek Public Power Corporation (PPC) S.A. is a company which produces lignite in open cast mines in Western Macedonia and in Peloponnesos. The present paper uses operational data kindly offered by PPC S.A. to derive sustainability indicators by means of Data Envelopment Analysis for three large scale lignite open cast mines of PPC (i.e. Main Field, Kardia Field and South Field mines). It also examines three environmental parameters related to the contribution of these mines to sustainable development; namely, the annually produced volume of waste masses, the annually produced quantity of ash from the lignite combustion and the annual volume of pumped water. The calculated sustainability indicators were keeping constantly better during the last years of the different periods for each one of mines studied here, showing that the mines met their goals from both economic and environmental aspects during the last years of their operational periods studied. The contribution of open cast lignite mines studied here to sustainable development can be monitored by the derived indicators analyzing annual mine operational data. The derived indicators can serve as tools to detect where improvements can be made, though another potential use of these indicators can also be during the preparation of feasibility studies or environmental impact studies using necessary benchmarking data.

Y. Luo and S.S. Peng are to be congratulated for their outstanding paper providing new results from surface subsidence monitoring over longwall panels under different conditions. This writer found the authors' paper very interesting. In reference to this paper, the following contributions are offered: • In the paper, the maximum possible subsidence (?Smax) induced by chain pillar convergence has been related to a parameter (h/I -p) by linear regression. (Notations are expressed in this discussion's Fig. I (b).) It is a well-known fact that in a goaf the roof lowers onto broken material that gradually compacts. Then the physical behavior of goaf may closely follow the compaction characteristics of broken materials. In light of this assumption, a mathematical means (Fig. 1(a)) of defining the expected compaction (i.e. surface subsidence) represents an exponential expression between ?Smax/m vs. h/1-p. This is based on Luo and Peng's field observations from the Appalachian, Illinois and Alabama coal fields. (The coefficient of regression "r" under consideration was computed to be 0.883). • According to Wardell's (1969) findings for board and pillar mining, the maximum possible subsidence can be expressed in terms of maximum pillar loading (depth, ratio of extraction) and the height-to-width ratio of the pillars left. Using Luo and Peng's 1991 results, this writer discovered a regression equation between the above-mentioned factors. As displayed in Fig. 1(b), the functional expression approximates as closely as possible the observed subsidence data.

It appears that the competition for increasingly scarce international mining investment capital will continue among developing countries. Indeed, there is growing evidence this competition may be on the verge of becoming destructive and cutthroat in nature. While this may be viewed as good news by short-term, speculative investors, it could have dangerous repercussions for international minerals producers over the long-term. It seems there has been a continuous parade of traveling foreign delegations touting the virtues of mineral investment in one country or another. These pitches all contain the politically correct key words, such as macro-economic reform, political reform, privatization, liberalization of laws governing mining and related investment incentives, reconciliation of ownership and right-to mine issues, and tax reform specially tailored for the minerals sector. Unfortunately, some of the information being trumpeted is based on plans, concepts or hopes for change rather than actual reforms approved by all necessary governmental entities. In yet other situations, the information provided consists of half-truths at best. Too often, potential minerals investors, faced with metals and minerals prices hovering near their recession lows and the need to offset old, high-cost operations, desperately want to believe all they hear about investment alternatives cast in a near-utopian setting. However, the virtues being proffered for mining investment abroad do not eliminate the need for careful scrutiny of subtle variations of traditional risks associated with foreign investment that can drastically affect the economic viability of mining projects.

Methane gas is an ever-present problem facing the underground coal mining industry. Mine operators are mandated by law to maintain safe concentrations of methane gas within the mine environment. Ventilation is the method of choice used by all mine operators to reduce gas concentrations. When gas emissions are such that ventilation alone cannot control the gas, methane drainage methods must be applied. In the 1970’s, there was a concern that unprecedented gas emissions would be experienced as mine operators began new developments in the deep and gassy Blue Creek and Pocahontas No. 3 Coalbeds. Such concern was well founded as significant gas volumes are being emitted as these mining operations mature. In 1971, the U.S. Bureau of Mines began to tabulate and track the change in mine emissions. These data were extracted from the underground coal mine quarterly air quality-quantity inspections performed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. At that time, approximately 6560 Mm3/d (231.7 MMcfd) of gas were emitted from 430 underground coal mines. It was determined however, that the mines emitting less than 2832 m3/d (100 Mcfd) contributed only 2.1 percent of the total daily gas flow. In 1988, underground coal mines emitted 8350 Mm3/d (294.9 MMcfd) from 487 mines. This report evaluates the changing nature of U.S. mine gas emissions over the last 18 years.

INTRODUCTION Urban tunneling in soil poses a unique set of problems to planners, designers and contractors. One of the important concerns is the impact of tunneling on the environment: not only the effects of noise, vibrations, construction traffic and surface traffic diversions, but also the effects of ground movements and dewatering on existing structures and facilities. Underpinning or other protection of structures often consume more than 10% of the total construction cost of an urban rapid transit tunnel, and another unknown percentage is expended on construction procedures designed to minimize these environmental effects. Ideally, many basic planning and design decisions should be based on reliable predictions of ground movements due to tunneling. Some of these decisions are: the choice of tunnel alignment and depth to minimize risks and effects of ground movements; selection of schemes to protect existing structures through soil improvement or underpinning, or outright acquisition and possible' demolition; relocation of utilities; selection of procedures for construction monitoring and project control; and the choice of construction and lining methods. To make rational decisions of this nature, the owner and his designers must perform analyses that will balance risks and costs of a variety of alternatives; but to make meaningful risk analyses, they must employ rational methods of predicting ground movements and their effects and must know the reliability of these predictions. Of course, the risk analyses also must consider politics, public relations, insurance and liabilities.

The use of the walking dragline as a stripping tool has increased dramatically in the past two decades. The reasons for its increased popularity and some historical background on its introduction into the mines are given in a recent paper by Learmont. (l)* The history need not be recounted here except to show the trend to longer booms which has accompanied the growth in machine size. Figure 1 shows the change in maximum operating radius on Bucyrus-Erie machines which has occurred over the years and Figure 2 shows the corresponding change in maximum boom lengths. Reference 1 also presents some of the reasons for expecting this trend to longer booms to continue. There are many design parameters affected by the increase in boom lengths; swing power, hoist and drag rope lengths, and drum capacity, to list just a few. The purpose of this paper is to discuss only the structural implications of using longer booms. As in the design of any structure, the various facets of boom design are interrelated and a process of optimization between them must be worked out either by evolution or by conscious iterative effort. The decisions we have reached about such things as material selection, structural arrangement, and applicable criteria, have not come into being overnight but represent instead many years of design experience and a fair amount of recent concentrated analytical effort. In the following pages an attempt will be made to first, state those decisions, second, explain how we arrived at that particular result; and third, describe what we expect future developments to be which might influence us to change those decisions.

Marbles commercially known as the Nigde- white crop out in the town of Gümü?ler, around the Çalkama Hill within the Gümü?ler Formation of the Nigde Masif of Paleozoic age. Marbles sporadically occur within the masif, however its prevalent occurrence is associated with the Gümü?ler Formation. Due mainly to its intense fractured nature, the Nigde-white marbles are used as dimension stones, crushed stones and most recently micronized calcite. Insignificant portion accounts for block use through a few quarries.

New and improved beneficiation techniques are available to allow the production of clay minerals of exceptionally high purity. This is particularly true for kaolins and smectites. Wet processing techniques include particle size separation, high intensity magnetic separation, chemical leaching ,flotation, and selective flocculation. The blending of clay minerals with other minerals provides opportunities to make special ceramic materials such as cordierite and other minerals that have very special ceramic properties including low heat expansion, high fired strength, low absorption, and other desired qualities.

Organic contaminants can be removed from river sediment using conventional flotation methods. Organic contamination in sediments is one of the most significant pollution problems facing the Great Lakes region. Using conventional flotation, the majority of the organic contamination can be collected in a concentrate, leaving a "clean" tailings. This provides a cost savings by reducing the amount of material requiring further treatment. The concentrate can then undergo additional flotation stages, or other contamination removal procedures, to further remove the organic contaminants.

The bentonite industry in Europe includes both the smectite and hormite groups of clay minerals. The smectites are, essentially, a compendium of cationic differentiatable montmorillonite platelets which can be expanded in liquid media, whereas, members of the hormite group are characterized by fibrous and chain structured lattices which are non-expandable. As was pointed out in the March '78 issue of Industrial Minerals, each of the minerals in these groups has acquired a variety of names due to historic or regional usage.

Where weak rock zones are encountered in the slopes of an open pit, they may control pit wall stability. Back analysis of slopes involving failure through weak rock enables an estimate to be made of the weak rock strength. A system of consistent rock mass classification is described which enables the weak rock mass material to be described and classified from drill hole core. Correlation with back analysis determined strength allows strength estimates to be assigned to each rock mass classification.

An intelligent supervisor developed using expert system tools and applied to a crushing plant is presented in this paper. The structure of this supervisor, based on a model of a human operator, consists of a Knowledge base containing a qualitative model of the process, and a Rules base with the heuristic logic used by an operator when supervising a plant. The simulation results obtained show the potential of this type of systems to supervise the automatic operation of a plant.

In 2003, MSHA initiated a survey of the 11 Coal Mine Safety and Health Districts to develop a database for the implementation of Atmospheric Monitoring Systems (AMS) in underground coal mines. Mine operators continue to realize the benefits of improved fire detection capabilities, as the number of mines using the systems, as well as the percentage of mines, continues to increase. Fire detection data and new technology implemented in underground coal mines is discussed as well as regulatory compliance, diesel exhaust considerations and hydrogen interference in carbon monoxide detection.

Color video or digital cameras have been installed over flotation cells to monitor color, bubble size, froth movement, and other characteristics. These systems are designed so that the camera provides flotation performance information just as any other sensor might. Factorial tests have been run to monitor and measure the variation in froth characteristics as a function of flotation control settings. Ultimately, it is envisioned that froth image sensors can be used to monitor and control the flotation performance as effectively and for less cost than current analytical systems.
