Introduction A study was completed that investigated the enrollment in mining engineering programs in 24 universities and colleges. All programs considered in the study award four-year bachelor of science degrees in mining engineering. They also provide all the engineers for the mining industry and a large portion of the geotechnical engineers working on environmental problems, storage of hazardous waste, civic, and Federal government underground projects. The numbers used as the base for the study are those reported by each program to SME-AIME and published yearly (SME, 1986). Data for the study came from the period 1975-1985. Also, since some programs include students in related disciplines and special categories, such as cooperative students, a few inaccuracies were unavoidable. A 23-page document has been prepared that reports on the overall picture of current enrollment, the trends, and discusses the results, perceived effects, and what can, or should, be done. There has been an obvious, and dramatic decrease in total undergraduate enrollment since the late 1970s. In 1978, 3117 students were enrolled. In the 1985 fall semester, enrollment was 1022, less than one-third. There were 485 seniors, 265 juniors, 147 sophomores, and 125 freshmen. The downward trend in total enrollment is likely to continue for at least another two years. Class size The catastrophic drop in enrollment is shared by all programs across the country. It does not discriminate between types of programs, coal or hard rock mining, or location. In general, 1985's enrollment is about 30% of whatever the maximum enrollment was in any program, though this varies from the teens to 50%. The latter percentage occurs only for some programs with special circumstances, particularly new programs not well established in the late 1970s. The beginning of the decline in enrollment has occurred at slightly different times as affected by the demise of each program's local industry. The numbers in each class produced from a specific freshmen year (Fig. 1) are worthy of comment. The dramatic drop in enrollment for all classes after 1982 is clearly demonstrated. The timing coincides with the general downturn in the mining industry, when many employed engineers were laid off and new graduates could not find jobs. Also, significantly fewer students are being attracted to mining programs as freshmen. The number of seniors shown seems inappropriate. Where did so many seniors come from and why are so few graduates produced? There is an increasing trend for students to take four-and-a-half or five years to graduate. Therefore, they are counted twice, once when they are first classed as seniors and again the following year. Some students purposely delay graduation to obtain more summer work experience and take additional courses. They believe that this gives them a better

Today, I would like to talk about ways to maximize the efficiency of surface coal operations. I doubt I will present any startling new ideas, but my comments may, hopefully, stimulate some conversation today and later back at your own operations. Strip mining is a very old technique used by ancient societies. Only with the coming of the machine age in the early twentieth century did we attempt to increase the magnitude of our operations. The industry, as we know it today, really only got started in the early 1900s with the advent of steam shovels. In the first portion of this presentation, I will attempt to show that we have, in many cases, not changed the basics of strip mining, only the scale. In doing so, quite often we have complicated the operations to the point of being unmanageable and unprofitable.

It is a pleasure to have the opportunity of being here today to discuss the application of horizontal filters in the metallurgical industries. The use of horizontal type filters has been limited in metallurgical plants. However, in the recent past there have been new designs of this type equipment which greatly broaden their field of application. Through their use in many applications, important economies can be achieved over more conventional methods. The first of the modern continuous horizontal filters was initially developed by Oliver United Filters as their scroll type horizontal filter. This was an outgrowth of the old Oliver Sand Table that was limited to very coarse, free filtering pulps containing no appreciable amount of fine particles. The sand table was rather limited in application. The later continuous scroll type horizontal filter provided for a reverse air blow after discharge which reslurried the heel remaining and permitted the filtration of pulps containing finer particles. In the manufacture of phosphoric acid by the ?wet? process, the filtration of gypsum from the strong acid presented an extremely difficult filtration problem due to blinding of the filter media caused by crystallization of the soluble salts contained in the acid. A filter which allowed for continuous cloth washing was required, and this led to the development of the continuous pan type, and travelling belt type horizontal filters which provided for this need. Among the filters developed were the Prayon by Engineering and Industrial Corporation of Luxembomg for use in their phosphoric acid plants. They are one of the largest manufacturers of phosphoric acid in Europe. The Dorr-Oliver Traveling Pan Filter was also developed by Mario Giorgini, Manager of Dorr-Oliver?s Italian subsidiary, for use with the Dorr Company?s phosphoric acid process. Basically, there are four existing types of horizontal filters in commercial use at this time: The scroll discharge non-pan type, the continuous belt type (Lurgi), rotary pan type, and the traveling belt type. The construction and principle of operation of these various filters will be discussed.

In 1895, the United States Treasury Department disclosed that $35 million worth of personal surety guarantees on file had become worthless. At that time, a law was passed, requiring all surety bonds, in favor of the United States, must be corporate surety bonds. Today, a surety bond is one of the nation's leading financial instruments used to guarantee the completion of an obligation.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, has developed a hardrock cutting concept and incorporated it into an extraction system called the ripper miner. This concept uses a single, wide bit that attacks the rock at a shallow angle and slow speed. Research has demonstrated that the system is capable of excavation rates exceeding those possible with conventional drill-blast and can effectively cut rock too hard for conventional roadheaders or continuous mining machines. It has the additional advantages of low bit wear and dust generation. This highly flexible concept is applicable to both mining and driving development openings and can cut any material from coal to hard rock. A single rip-per miner can perform the functions of a continuous mining machine, a roadheader excavator, and a tunnel boring machine. This paper presents the history of the development of the ripper miner from the initial laboratory tests through the construction and testing of the full-scale, lab prototype. It includes a comparison of the ripper miner to systems currently used from the standpoint of energy efficiencies and operating costs.

Silicon dioxide, silica, is the most common oxide in the earth' s crust. The health effects of silicon dioxide dust have been known since Biblical times. Agricola's book, published in the mid 1500's on occupational medicine, described a lung disease that afflicted miners. He observed a disease in miners that caused shortness of breath, coughing and wasting. Add fever, chest pains and fatigue and we have the current symptom complex of silicosis. As we approached the 21stcentury, the Labor Department began an aggressive campaign to combat silicosis-a preventable disease. Unfortunately, many publications do not clearly differentiate the polymorphs of silica known to mineralogists. Crystalline silica, i.e., alpha quartz, tridymite and cristobalite need to be considered differently from the amorphous forms of silica. Freshly fractured surfaces of the silica and host specific responses will be examined. Recent research focuses on the biologic interactions of free radicals generated by mineral particles. This results in cell injury and DNA damage, in turn leading to fibrogenesis and possibly carcinogenesis. In addition to particle-cell interactions, emphasis is given to lung defense mechanisms.

There are a large number of facilities throughout the world which handle coal, such as preparation plants. Many other facilities use coal as a fuel, such as cement and lime factories. Although coal can be handled safely and can be an efficient fuel, there are explosion hazards which are accentuated as the particle size is reduced. Particle sizes of coal which can fuel a propagating explosion occur within thermal dryers, cyclones, baghouses, pulverized-fuel systems, grinding mills, and other process or conveyance equipment. This paper discusses how explosions can occur within these facilities.

The mechanisms of chalcopyrite oxidation in alkaline solutions have been studied using cyclic voltammetry and AC impedance spectroscopy techniques. Analysis of the impedance spectra using equivalent circuit models has made it possible to suggest layerwise growth of surface films. From the value of equivalent circuit parameters, properties of the surface layers are inferred. These properties change substantially with the change in oxygen and/or collector concentration in solution and give rise to changes In contact angle and flotation response. In agreement with prior investigations, the present study shows that flotation recoveries alone cannot be used to determine the effect of collector on flotation of chalcopyrite. The rate of flotation is a more sensitive parameter to determine the role of collector on floatability of chalcopyrite.

Like our wives, the comminution of brittle solids is easy to recognize but difficult to describe. However, describing it we must. Describing the fracture mechanism of brittle solids permits the eventual mathematical quantification of the results, process optimization and control strategies. This paper presents a physical model of brittle solid comminution that explains why the slope of the log-log size distribution curves have a slope of one or less in the smaller particle sizes. To develop the hypothesis, modifications of the Gaudin Meloy physical model are made. In brittle solids, comminution takes place by cracks propagating through the material. These cracks may bifurcate as they move. Cracks may terminate either on the original surface of the material, or on a secondary crack within the material formed earlier in the comminution process.

Broadly applicable to all corners of project delivery, this paper will resonate with project leaders from around the world and help identify skills necessary to succeed in the management of underground facilities. A NOTE FROM THE AUTHORS This is a training document, and not really a “paper” per se. We have attempted to tackle some big and potentially complex topics using bite-sized paragraphs, each of which are intended to promote thoughtful introspection and dialog. So please feel free to skip around, or even set this document down while you reflect on your own personal experiences, tactics, and philosophies. We have found that providing examples of “what not to do” is oftentimes more instructive than simply listing “what to do”, hence the Good/Bad format of this document. Please note that “PM” refers loosely to anyone on the project management team not just the “Project Manager”. We also wish to preface this with the following cautionary statements: • The authors do not pretend to be the “Good PM” in all cases. In fact, we’re almost certainly the “Bad PM” for some. In the last decade public awareness of the need for pollution abatement has increased greatly. The concern that had been previously shared by local and state conservation groups has spread to create a national concern for preservation of our non-polluted environmental assets and regeneration of those that have been wasted. Because other current matters such as inflation, civil rights,' tax reform and the Vietnam situation have been the object of most national concern, an extremely strong national pressure base has not been brought to bear on the pollution control crisis. Yes, the word is crisis, for in many areas pollution is of critical concern. One has only to look at Lake Erie, the skies about our major urban areas and many of our major rivers and streams to see this crisis These are not situations that can be corrected overnight. We are faced with two basic problems that should be attacked simultaneously: (1) Cleaning up the present sources of pollution and (2) preventing the generation of new pollution sources. What approach should be taken? As in any engineering problem, the limits must be well defined before a final solution is attempted. Pollution must be defined on a national basis. This means that basic Federal legislation and control is necessary. This should reduce any competitive advantage that can presently be gained by movement of operations from one state or geographical area to another on the basis of differences in local legislation .and enforcement. By giving real numbers as guidelines, selective enforcement can be avoided. As a starting point, for a definition of pollution let us use the following - "Any change in the environment occurring from other than natural causes." This definition may not be satisfactory to all but surely we must be somewhat dramatic in our statements to counteract the present prevailing philosophy. Our statement of this philosophy - "At what level of pollution can we afford to operate?" On the basis of our general definition we would like to state what we feel should be the philosophical statement - "How little can we change our physical environment as a result of operations?"

Stratabound Proterozoic precious metal mineralization in central Arizona is associated with felsic and adnesitic to mafic volcanic rocks and sediments derived from these rocks. Hydrothermal fluids associated with felsic volcanism form gold mineralization within hotspring vent complexes or within asymetric basins, which flank the vent complexes and are filled with tuffaceous sediments. Massive to semi-massive sulfide copper-zinc systems associated with felsic volcanism may locally contain small gold occurances either laterally or vertically zoned from the ore. In andesitio to mafic rocks, zinc-lead-gold-silver-copper bearing mineralization and gold mineralization are both associated with feruginous sulfide bearing cherts. The partitioning of gold into these specific geologic environments may be related to variations in temperature and composition of the hydrothermal fluid and the depth of the seawater-sediment interface below sea level during the mineralization event.

"1. INTRODUCTIONDo contractual practices affect project outcome? Can better contractual practices improve the likelihood of project success? The consensus amongst experts is that better contractual practices really do improve project outcomes. With this in mind the members of the International Tunnelling Association (ITA) Working Group 3 on Contractual Practices (WG3) pooled their collective knowledge to publish in 2011 the document entitled The ITA Contractual Framework Checklist for Subsurface Construction Contracts (ITA Working Group 3, 2011). Written for projects involving significant subsurface works, e.g. tunnels and caverns, the ITA Framework Checklist explains the major contractual issues that must be considered to ensure a successful project. Its goal is not to specify how each issue should be resolved, but rather to highlight the issues and give recommendations on how they should be addressed. The Checklist is compatible with, and provides guidance for reviewing, standard contracts such as FIDIC and NEC. One of the authors is a co-author of the Checklist and has contributed to previous papers describing the Checklist and its applicability to hydropower projects (Hodgkinson & Wilson 2014, Hodgkinson & Wilson 2015). The Checklist identifies a series of issues that should be contractually defined, which can be summarized as follows: •,Methods for dealing with geotechnical uncertainties should be defined in the contract •,There should be an appropriate level of geotechnical/geological investigation •,Sufficient mobilization periods should be allowed •,Sufficient time should be allowed for testing and commissioning •,Procedures for timely dispute resolution should clearly defined •,Quality and performance requirements should be clearly defined and measurable •,Provision should exist for cost consequences of unforeseen circumstances •,Dispute resolution processes should be clearly defined •,Payment processes should be fair and clearly defined •,Risk should be clearly allocated and parties should be able to bear the risks they carry •,There should be a mechanism for adjusting payments according to conditions •,The risk management approach should be clearly defined •,Admeasurement or unit price approaches are recommended •,The responsibilities of each party must be clearly defined •,The consequences of non-performance should be clearly defined •,The construction programme (schedule) should be realistic."

This paper is motivated by the belief that increasing drilling and blasting costs will not necessarily bring about better digging or crushing productivity. As a matter of fact it can be counter productive as the ensuing discussion will show. In the two case studies presented herein when powder factor increased, productivity at a rope shovel and at a primary crusher decreased. Experience has shown that equipment (shovel and primary crusher) productivity increases as the powder factor increases and concurrently operating costs decrease. This is illustrated by Figure 1where the graph shows (assuming drilling costs constant) that for increases in powder factor initially operating costs might fall till a certain point and then they start to go up again. By the same token we need to understand what is the behavior of the operation’s productivity. It seems intuitive productivity goes up for increases in powder factor but when an operation reaches the point of minimum operating cost one could say that productivity reached its maximum. For continuing increases in powder factor can productivity still go up or does it go down? This paper presents two examples where the productivities of a surface coal mine and of a quarry are reduced for increases in powder factor. This indicates that these two operations could be operating to the right of their minimum operating costs and maximum productivity and therefore wasting precious drilling and blasting dollars and resources. Moreover, their productivity is following the red dotted line in Figure 1 and the question becomes can they follow the blue dotted line for increased drilling and blasting costs? The industry owes to itself to determine this minimum operating cost point and what can be done in case that the productivity goes down afterwards despite an increase in drilling and blasting costs. In other words, utilize your drilling and blasting resources correctly. In the two examples that follow single explosive loading strategies make powder factor a valid means of comparing the results of productivity as a function of powder factor. Also, external factors such as equipment operator influence are eliminated due to the long time span considered in the analysis

On the territory of Macedonia in South Yugoslavia primary and dory gold occurences were known since ancient times. Remnants of numerous goafs and remainders of washaries on river terraces and alluviums date right back to the times of Phillip II and his son Alexander of Macedonia and from Roman times, as well as from the Middle Ages witness exploitation of primary and secondary gold. More recent explorations on primary and secondary gold occurrences date from the period between two World Wars. Over that period a number of private companies, each on their own jointly, carried out gold exploration, particularly of alluvial occurrences on rivers emptying into River Vardar, starting from Skopje to the Greek frontier. The latest gold explorations carried out In the alluvium of River Konjska date back in 1976, and in 1978 old terraces of River Konjska were explored. The Visibility Study was prepared on possibilities of exploitation of gold from River Konjska alluvium. In the paper are collected the basic date an all known primary and secondary occurrences of gold, the results of the latest explorations, and the study itself. To-date geological explorations and analyses show very interesting potentionality of River Konjska and River Vardar alluvium, which proves continuing of he further explorations. For the moment, it is necessary to re-explore more complete view of the deposit. After that it will be possible to make complete techno-economical estimation of the auriferious alluviums and the conditions of the evaluations of the alluvial gold. 1. Nearly three decades of intense research, corresponding with a period of unparalleled discovery and the advent of scientific advances and hypotheses of ore formation, has resulted in a great body process-focused research concerning how ore deposits form. The development of process models and their application has proceeded more or less in step. Discoveries have been made in mineralized regions such as provinces and districts but generally without a comparably developed understanding of why provinces and ore bodies exist and, except in general terms, where ore deposits are within districts and regions. The process of discovery is still referred to as search and exploration budgets are heavily weighted toward exploration drilling.

Geologic mapping techniques at the Bingham Mine have evolved as rapidly expanding applications of geological data have caused new methods to be utilized. The most significant changes in method have been in the preparation of the base map and in computer application of collected data. Formerly maps were prepared by surveying with transit or plane table. Currently a photogrammetric map, on the scale of 1-inch equals 200-feet, is prepared semi-annually and continuously updated to keep pace with the removal of more than 350,000 tons of material daily. Larger scale bases for specific problems, such as areas having unstable slopes, are prepared by use of aerial and terrestial photography and photo mosaics. Note sheets designed for computer application enable fast processing of the data. Application of geology at the Bingham Mine has been increasing rapidly in recent years. The effect of structure, rock type, and alteration on slope stability, the relationship of sulfide mineral distribution to concentrating results, the effect of rock and mineral types on waste dump leaching, and requirements of a reliable internal source of silica flux for smelting are a few of the problems which require the collection and application of geologic data.

In the present work the possibility to utilize the morphometrical and morphological characteristics of an articulate solids system in a slurry flow to monitorate and to control a continuous process is considered. This goal has been reached by mean of an optical system able to acquire, to handle and to process the pictorial information derived by a suitable hardware architecture designed to realize the best lighting, focusing and sampling conditions for the examined flow stream domain. The procedure has been tested using different flow stream slurries coming from different sections of a beneficiation plant. A suitable strategy and a consequent software architecture has been set up in order to assure to the system the necessary speed and the stability to achieve correct on-line measurements and control.
