We report measurements of the effects of rank, type, and grade of coal on grinding energy and grinding media consumption in a Pitt Mill. The rank of coal has a greater effect on grinding energy than does coal type. The effect of coal grade on grinding energy depends upon the relative grindability of the mineral matter and of the hydrocarbon components of the coal. The mineral matter is primarily responsible for abrasive media wear in a Pitt Mill. The widely recognized HGI test for coal breakage may yield misleading results, particularly for multiple-banded bright and dull coal where the screening procedure used in sample preparation favors the testing of the hardest coal fraction. The work reported here indicates that the Pitt Mill, which grinds the whole coal in a single stage and which yields easily interpreted results, is an excellent candidate for testing coal pulverization characteristics including energy requirements and equipment wear. The measurements of the effects of coal characteristics on grinding energy and on media consumption have been used to estimate the cost of fine grinding in a Pitt Mill. The results, based on a conceptual level evaluation of grinding at the rate of 1 TPH, show that there are trade-offs possible between the cost of energy and cost of media consumption which involve choice of grinding media size. The use of fine-size grinding media to lower grinding energy and to increase throughput can be deceptive because the total cost of grinding must consider both energy and media consumption.

The greatest part of crushed stone, gravel and sand production is extracted through open pit operations, whereas gravel and sand are also partially extracted from riverbeds. Its obvious that such a mining activity provokes some changes in the configuration and environmental characteristics of the region, in the temporary or permament disapperance of vegetable or animal species and in the creation of noise, dust and waste water. However, the above-mentioned mining operations shouldn not have only negative effects on the landscape and land potential, but they can discover and predetermine the potential of the exploited areas for various communal purposes after exploitation (eg. sports and recreation centers, campsites, resorts, fish-farms, etc.). In this paper, the production of construction aggregates in plants located in the vicinity of Zagreb, the capital of Croatia is presented. The advantages and disadvantages of aggregates? production in urban areas in the spirit of sustainable development are discussed.

"In today’s fast paced, globally competitive world, reliability and machine uptime are of the utmost importance to a successful operation. Along with these targets more emphasis is being put on cost reduction and decreasing the environmental impact of the overall system. To achieve these goals, automatic lubricators and lubrication systems have been used in many industries for years and are now becoming a common tool in the mining industry as well. These systems are able to provide proper lubrication amounts at the proper times autonomously, helping to keep the machines running smoothly while minimizing the physical support required. Copper mines in the southwest have begun utilizing auto lubrication to avoid mistakes and unplanned shut downs on critical equipment. This paper will describe the engineering behind these products and review case histories where these tools have been successfully utilized in the mining industry. INTRODUCTION In a dirty, dusty, wet environment, where machine uptime is imperative, proper lubrication of bearings is the only way to survive. With the push for cost reduction and mines striving to lower their environmental impact and increase worker safety according to MSHA guidelines, the old lubrication practices have come under scrutiny. It is no longer encouraged or cost effective to have maintenance personal walk from point to point throughout the entire mine pumping a shot of grease into each bearing once per shift. Automatic lubricators and lubrication systems have been on the market for years but recently, as the market focus has changed and technology has developed, the use of these systems has begun to rise in the mining industry. Automatic lubrication systems can be as simple as a single point lubricator lubricating one (1) bearing or a more complex system lubricating numerous bearings. With system design, the automatic lubricator provides a preset amount of grease to a bearing at regular, predetermined intervals. The systems designed to lubricate more than one bearing contain grease pumps of some design and possibly PLC controllers which can be used to remotely adjust and monitor the system. As can be seen in Figure 1, the right amount of lubrication can be achieved much more reliably with automatic lubricators. Depending on application needs, the market now has products to fit almost every wish list. This paper is going to focus on the single point systems that are lower in cost but are still being effective."

Evaporite rocks, salts of the more soluble ions in seawater, are deposited when seawater becomes concentrated by excess evaporation in marginal basins having restricted circulation with the open sea. The simple conceptual model of an evaporite basin (Figure 1) has a single inlet connecting the basin to the open ocean, the restriction to open circulation being caused by a bar or reef near the mouth of the inlet. As the oceanic water flows from the inlet into the basin it tends to form a thin layer of brine that spreads out over the surface of the basin brine, and as it does so, the salt concentration In the surface layer gradually increases owing to continued evaporation of the water. When the solubility products of the salts in the surface layer are exceeded, the salts precipitate and settle to the bottom of the basin, The order of precipitation follows their order of least solubility. Normally the carbonates separate first, followed by the sulfates and chlorides and the more complex double salts. In nature there is considerable overlap in their ranges of precipitation. The water flow in the basin, also shown schematically in Figure 1, diverges from the inlet essentially perpendicular to the lines of' equal salinity in the surface brine. The distribution of salts deposited in such a model will parallel the isosalinity lines, being arcuate and concave toward the inlet (1)

When coarse gold is present in an ore, there are advantages in physically recovering this gold in the grinding section of the ore processing plant. This reduces the risk of the coarse gold being locked up in the grinding section equipment, reduces the quantity of activated carbon to be eluted and reduces the risk of gold passing out of the cyanide leaching circuit only partially dissolved. The free gold may be recovered by various mechanical means utilising the significant difference between the specific gravity of the gold and waste minerals. Frequently, sulphide minerals and ball mill attrition steel in the form of fines and chips are present in the ground ore and behave in a similar manner to the gold in the concentrating process. These materials must be removed to produce a concentrate suitable for direct smelting and several stages of cleaning, sometimes utilising different physical principles, may be required. The removal of these materials invariably results in a loss of gold from the final concentrate. The rejected materials containing significant quantities of gold are returned to the grinding section, consequently the opportunity for a high and early recovery has been lost. The quantity of gold returned to the grinding section will vary according to the number and type of cleaning stages and the physical characteristics of the materials and the gold but surveys of the gravity concentration processes suggest that it may be as high as 50%. To maximise the recovery of gold from the primary gravity concentrate, some operations batch cyanide leach this concentrate with or without additional reagents. The method of agitation and solution recovery vary. The most common method of agitation is by a high-speed propeller mixer and the least expensive but time-consuming method of solution recovery is by decantation after settling and by repeated decant washing. The pregnant gold solution is either introduced into the main ore leaching circuit or the gold is recovered by direct electrowinning. After commissioning in 1994, Union Reefs Gold Mine (URGM) experienced below expected recovery of gold from the gravity concentrate generated from the Knelson Concentrators. It was shown that the recovery into the Knelson Concentrate was high but that the subsequent mechanical concentrating techniques of tabling and magnetic separation resulted in significant gold being returned to the grinding circuit.

Geochemical characteristics, shapes and surface textures of manganese nodules from two blocks located in the southern (9°N~11°N) (KR5) and northern parts (16°N~17°N) (KR2) of the Clarion-Clipperton fracture zone between 130°W and 133°W were investigated in terms of sediment distribution and metal contents for better understanding of controlling factors of seabed manganese nodule genesis. Two blocks, ~700 km away, are dominated by the nodules with different origins, each of which has distinctive chemical compositions and shapes. KR2 block is dominated by irregular and poly-type nodules of hydrogenetic origin with low Mn/Fe, Cu, and Ni contents and high Fe and Co contents, while KR5 block is dominated by discoidal and ellipsoidal nodules of diagenetic origin with high Mn/Fe, Cu, and Ni contents and low Fe and Co contents. In addition, nodules from two blocks show different surface textures: smooth and transitional in KR2 and dimorphic and rough in KR5. Sediment distribution is also distinctly different in two blocks. The study area consists of three sediment types: Unit 1 ? dark brown mud with an intermediate metal content, Unit 2 - yellowish brown mud with poor metal content, and Unit 3 ? black metalliferous mud. KR2 is characterized by the thick occurrences (<250 cm) of Unit 1 at the surface while Unit 1 distributes thin (<12 cm) in KR5. Higher primary production rate in the southern block proximal to equator and resulting high supply rate of metals to the sediment might be the cause for the dominance of diagenetic nodules in the southern block, but potential controls of different sediment distribution on the nodule genesis can not be excluded. If it is the case, Unit 1 with an intermediate metal content likely has been acting as a sink for metals by precipitating micro-nodules within the sediment column. Within the KR5, the hydrogenetic nodules occur preferentially on the seabed where Unit 3 distributes at shallower depth (<50 cm). Unit 3 has 2 or 3 times higher metal contents than other types of sediments. It might play the same role as Unit 1 in the northern block that prevents the supply of metals to the sediment surface. Introduction In an earlier publication, the application of exoelectron technology to the monitoring of dry grinding in a ball mill was reported. Recently, the author has investigated the ball mill problem in more detail with the system shown in Fig.1 . Here, some of the current generated in the ore-ball-water mixture was picked up by the metal chains and served as a measure of the rate of grinding. While the mechanism of current generation has not been completely clarified, a parallel study of electrical effects associated with rock drilling indicated that the major driving force is the zeta potential*, while oxidation of the freshly fractured material provides the remainder of the current. Both of these effects are sensitive to the exposed surface area, and it might be expected that the observed currents would provide a measure of the grinding rate. This "surface area" effect allows the measurement system to be used in any type of rock or ore grinding. Some studies with sulfide copper ore indicate higher currents than those observed with silica sand, but the overall pattern of current versus grinding rate is essentially the same. Experimental Studies The experimental system was set up as shown in Fig. 1. The initial studies were done with silica sand because of its availability and for comparison with the data of reference 1. The sand was sized to an average of 425 µm (40 mesh); a typical charge consisted of 2.5 kg (5.5 lb) of sand, 0.85 L (0.22 gal) of tap water and 2.5 kg (5.5 lb) of iron grinding balls 25.5 mm (1 in.) in diameter. For a typical "run," the mill was loaded with a fresh charge of ore and operated for periods ranging from 10-60 min. During this time, the current was measured with a Keithley 417 picoammeter and a chart recorder. At the end of the grinding period, the charge was removed and sieved to recover the 425, 300, and 212 pm (40, 50, and 70 mesh) fractions which were then drained and weighed. A fresh charge was used for each test and every attempt was made to keep the draining and weighing processes uniform. *The zeta potential is the voltage developed between the surface of a solid particle and the ion solution in which it is immersed. In the case of rock/ore materials in water, the zeta potential is negative.

In today&apos;s economic environment, Canadian mines can ill afford to neglect their ventilation systems as they can consume 30- 40% of the electricity used in underground mines. In addition, Canadian mines can incur significant heating costs. For mines to be their most cost efficient they must embrace existing and emerging technology to optimize the use of their air; namely, maximizing its work in diluting and removing pollutants, limiting leakage, and avoiding the unnecessary consumption of costly fan pressure all the while ensuring the health of their workforce. Furthermore, in Canadian mines which are heavily dieselized there is great interest within the industry to convert from a rigid quantitative approach to ventilation, based upon engine size, towards a more flexible qualitative approach that provides credit for Clean engine technology" and permits ventilation supply to be driven and based upon pollutant demands. In the future, there is even the possibility that ventilation will only be required to supply oxygen to diesel equipment as the underground hands-on workforce is replaced by surface workers and tele-operation. Such changes will allow mine operators to minimize their electrical usage and operating costs, for in its simplest form the cost of running a fan is proportional to the quantity3; therefore, reducing current ventilation demands or limiting increases brought on by more stringent legislation, can produce very significant cost savings. CANMET, through ventilation surveys and use of its modern 3D-CANVENT ventilation simulator, have been demonstrating to the mining industry how ventilation can be optimally delivered at reduced costs. El-Equip with their leaky-feeder communications and MultiVENT monitoring and control system have facilitated mines to control fans and hence costs, and also monitor such ventilation parameters as pollutant concentrations. These two parties are now combining their efforts to develop an integrated air management system which will be demonstrated at CANMET&apos;s Experimental Mine Val D&apos;Or, Quebec. With such an air management system, the ventilation engineer will have: 1) a simple to use simulator to design and test ventilation scenarios; 2) remote controls of fans, doors and regulators to implement changes; and 3) real-time monitoring of airflow, pollutant concentrations, and both vehicle identity and location to show whether changes are necessary. It is only when all three are available, that a mine&apos;s ventilation system can be operated at minimum cost.

The Don River & Central Waterfront Coxwell Sanitary Bypass Tunnel (CBT) Project in Toronto will extend approximately 10.5 km and be lined using a precast concrete segmental tunnel liner with an internal diameter of 6,300 mm and external diameter of 6,900 mm. The CBT liner was grouted through ports drilled in the segments. The Westerly Storage Tunnel (WST) in Cleveland will extend approximately 2.93 km long and will be lined by using a similar precast concrete segmental tunnel liner with an internal diameter of 7,620 mm and external diameter of 8,230 mm. The WST liner was grouted using both grout ports built into the tail can of the TBM and through segments. Each tunnel was mined primarily in shale with varying levels of weathering and both tunnels had dry and wet sections. This paper will document the means and methods for grouting in each tunnel as well as the methods utilized to proof grout and the results found.

Society&apos;s growing concern over the number of deaths and serious injuries occurring in coal mines, coupled with a growing sentiment to develop and promulgate improved mandatory health or safety standards, was no doubt the basis for passage by Congress of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, being Public Law 91-173 approved December 30, 1969. Even prior to passage of the Act, strong reaction was quick to arise concerning the effect of such legislation upon the coal mining industry. Initial response varied from mild forms of criticism to&apos; the expressed fear of complete suspension of operations and mine closings. Primarily responsible for these early forms of skepticism were speculative or fanciful cost estimates which led operators to contemplate a less than prosperous existence. However, in spite of this unfavorable outlook, the majority of the operators have faced up to the situation and have been striving to comply with the Act and the regulations issued thereunder. While encouraging strides have been made toward implementation of the Act, it must be recognized that noticeable results have been attained only through many months of determined effort and, as anticipated, at quite heavy expense to the operator.

Mineral models provide a systematic and comprehensive approach for analyzing and fore- casting the behavior of mineral markets and industries.&apos; They also permit the analysis of a wide range of policy decisions. Obviously such models cannot capture all of the intricate relationships that shape the behavior of a mineral market. However, such models have become extremely useful and in many cases support the decision making approach of judgmental analysts. They tend to narrow the range of likely outcomes and thus reduce the risks and uncertainties of investing, trading, and speculating in minerals. Mineral models provide not only answers to "what-if" questions, they also inform analysts of the benefits and costs associated with mineral investment decisions. More recently they have been applied to specific mineral issues of the possible impact of buffer stock stabilization schemes and of import supply restrictions. Mineral Models Defined Because mineral models are so diverse, we must begin with a fairly broad definition. A mineral model is a formal representation of a mineral market, industry or system where the behavioral relationships included reflect the underlying economic and engineering factors as well as the political and social institutions. Of ten, but not always, a mineral model will consist of some combination of the following components: demand, supply, inventories and prices. Modeling of demand behavior normally begins with an interpretation of basic demand responses to prices and income (i.e., the associated price and income elasticities). Price elasticities vary among different minerals and among their diverse uses. They tend to be lower for minerals without close substitutes than for those where such substitutes exist. In addition, these elasticities vary with time as well as with the actual excess demand or excess supply. Variations like these, coupled with the relative instability of prices for a number of minerals, make explanations of demand behavior difficult. The degree to which demand responds to changes in income depends on the income elasticity of the end products to which the minerals serve as inputs. Those products with a relatively low income elasticity tend to experience proportionally smaller swings in sales than those with higher elasticities. The transmission of demand cycles to minerals producers comes through a series of stage-of-process effects. Demand measurement also is influenced considerably by mineral substitution patterns. The cross-price elasticity of a competitive or complementary commodity also varies with minerals, markets, and time. Where minerals easily substitute for one another, as in the case of cop- per and aluminum in electrical conductor applications, cross-price elasticities are relatively high. Estimating the lithologic composition of gravel deposits for aggregate quality using standard field and laboratory techniques is costly and time-consuming. As an alternative, digital geologic maps and elevation models may provide a means for predicting the lithologic composition of channel and terrace deposits. Digital geologic maps can be used to evaluate the distribution of map units: their geomorphic setting, and the physical properties of the gravel source. To test this concept, the lithologies and topography of the upper drainage basin of the Big Thompson River along the Colorado Front Range were used to examine various factors that may control the final lithologic composition of channel and terrace gravels downstream. The simplest factor is the area of each of the map units in the upper drainage basin area, which can be easily measured from the digital geologic map. The percentage of each map unit within the total area provides a estimate of the pro- portions of each map unit that might be expected to occur in the downstream gravels. Published estimates of the hardness and durability of each map unit were used to calculate physical property-weighted areas; these areas are an estimate of the potential of each unit to be eroded and transported as gravel-sized particles. The areas of each map unit at 1-kilometer intervals from the drainage basin exit point were used to calculate a distance-weighted area for each map unit. For this study, a simple inverse relationship (area/distance) was used for distance weighting, but a more complicated distance function may ultimately be required. The topographic setting of exposed rock units should exert a significant influence on whether material will move slowly or rapidly through the drainage system. Two topographic factors were examined: gradient and slope. A simple gradient between map unit occurrences and the exit point of the drainage basin was used to calculate a gradient-weighted area estimate for each map unit. The slope-weighted area estimate uses the slope steepness (in degrees) in the immediate vicinity of each map unit occurrence as a measure of the tendency of material to begin moving into the sediment transport system. The primary intent of this study was to test the concept of using digital geologic map and elevation images to estimate gravel composition, rather than actually producing a useful analysis of a drainage basin. Each of the controlling factors was examined independently to gain an understanding of the magnitude of the effect of each factor. Ultimately, a comprehensive predictive model will be constructed using a combination of the various controlling factors.

The Deserado Mine of Western Fuels- Utah Inc. installed a micro-computer based mine wide monitoring and control system for mine environment, beltway fire protection, belt operating parameters, and equipment power utilization. The Colorado School of Mines was funded by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to document, evaluate, and report on the system design, procurement, installation, tests, and operation. This paper results from that project. The paper compares planned activities such as installation and start up, procurement contract specifications and system layout with actual performance to develop recommendations for future installations by mine operators.

The National Lead Company operates its MacI tyre Development at Tahawus, New York for the production of ilmenite and. magnetite. The heavy ore of titanium and iron is mined from the open pit mine at an average rate of 7,000 tons per day, and the development waste is removed at an average rate of 10,000 tons per day. The mine working benches are spaced, at 35-foot vertical intervals, and 6 ½ inch blast holes are drilled 39-feet deep with 18-foot burden and spacing by down-the-hole drills. Waste is loaded with a 6 yeard shovel and ore with 2 ½ yard shovels into 22-ton rear dump trucks. A good account of the history of MacIntyre drilling and. blasting was presented to this assembly two years ago, by F. R. Jones. (1) Most of the blasting since the start of the mine in 1941 was done with 90% gelatin dynamite until 1955, when relatively insensitive canned blasting agents were adopted.. In 1956, 9-inch blast holes drilled with down-the-hole drills. In 1956, also, the first experimental trials of prilled ammonium nitrate fertilizer and fuel oil (hereafter called fertilizer) was made following the lead of Cleveland-Cliffs operations in the Hibbing district. Since that trial did not, as some local skeptics predicted, make grass grown on the bluff, but resulted in a well-broken shot, further tests were conducted in dry holes. I Observations of those tests indicated that the fertilizer did its share of the work. If anything, it produced better fragmentation than the normal load di in neighboring wet holes.

"Tunneling through an urban environment carries many inherent risks to the immediate local infrastructure and subsequently to the project stakeholders. On the CQ031 Contract of the East Side Access Project in Queens, New York, twin 22.5’ diameter Herrenknecht Slurry TBMs were mined within close proximity to many infrastructure assets, with cover of less than half a shield diameter at times. Multiple public bridges and critical railroad infrastructure including catenary poles and signal towers supporting the busiest rail interlocking in the United States required underpinning systems. The support program for these structures was refined over the course of the four tunnel drives. It is the intent of this paper to show how the interaction between the temporary structures, instrumentation monitoring plan, and risk assessment program melded to provide a system which the owner, contractor, and designer relied on as a tool to ensure the project success without impacting the public surroundings. PROJECT BACKGROUND The East Side Access (ESA) megaproject located in New York City, N.Y is a multi billion dollar program for the Metropolitan Transit Authority Capital Construction (MTACC) with the main goal of bringing the Long Island Railroad (LIRR) commuter rail to Grand Central Station located in the heart of Midtown Manhattan. When completed, the project will significantly reduce congestion both into and out of Penn Station, the current terminus of the LIRR. In order to accomplish this, multiple contracts of varying scope are required to operate simultaneously in both Queens, N.Y and Manhattan. In 2009, the CQ031 Queens Bored Tunnels Contract was awarded to the joint venture of Granite Construction Northeast, Traylor Bros. Inc., and Frontier Kemper (G.T.F). The main scope of this contract was to excavate four segmentally lined soft ground tunnels underneath the Sunnyside Rail Yard in Queens, New York. Additional scope of work included the construction of a tunnel approach structure, electrical substation, and multipurpose ventilation and egress facility."

The Appalachian coal region is an area here the small mining operation dominates. The large number of small operations makes the coal industry in chat area very competitive, the industry concentration ratio being low. This feature is reflected in the nature and behavior of the coal supply and demand viz a viz the coal market. The vast majority of the small coal operations in Eastern Kentucky for example, are contractors. The circumstances under which a large mining company can elect to use contractors to supplement their coal production are examined. The pros and cons of small underground single unit mines and larger multiple unit mines are discussed.

A review of the literature reveals that methods for simulating the coupled behavior of size reduction and liberation are limited to binary mineral systems containing one composite particle class. The aim of this paper is to describe the development of a mathematical model to simulate such behavior for binary and ternary systems containing multiple classes of composite particles. A modified Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm and a finite difference Jacobian are used in conjunction with the developed model and a set of constrained equations to estimate all kinetic parameters. This estimation scheme is validated for a binary ore (sphalerite-dolomite) with five composite particle classes using experimental data.

Tg Soda Ash has operated a shortwall mining system in the Green River, Wyoming trona district since August. 1982. The system has proven to be highly productive. In an effort to reduce the relatively expensive development mining and Improve mine planning flexibility, a method to mine the return air tailgate during the shortwall retreat was tested beginning In April, 1987. As of June. 1988 four shortwall panels had been completed utilizing the advancing tailgate, producing over 815,000 tons.

Heavy media separation is one of a number of ore-concentration techniques for coarse? feed which, when the ore is amenable, offers economic advantages in the mining stage and/or the processing stage. In mining, simpler and cheaper methods may be used if a greater proportion of waste material can be included in the mining blocks that can later be re-moved efficiently at a coarse size. In the mill, pre-concentration can mean considerable savings in capital and operating costs by down-scaling of equipment sizes particularly in the grinding section. Conversely, throughput may be increased using the equipment already in-stalled in the concentrator.
