The success of the industrial minerals end of the mining industry is often overshadowed by the high price of copper, the glamour of gold, and the nation's huge reserves of coal. Those three segments of the industry, however, along with every other business in the world, could not function without the products that are composed of a variety of industrial minerals. And, according to Haydn H. Murray, past president of SME, the value of industrial minerals in the United States is more than triple that of metals, about $19 billion a year versus $6 billion. In the developed countries of the world, he said, the value of industrial minerals is nearly always greater than the value of metallic minerals. Murray, also a professor of geology at Indiana University, was the luncheon speaker at the SME-sponsored Grinding of Industrial Minerals conference held in Asheville, NC this past September. Producers of industrial minerals know they must squeeze the maximum value out of the industrial mineral being mined and processed, Murray told the audience of about 100 people. Grinding and particle size, then, are vital to a commodity's profitability.

Sewage sludge contains heavy metals, pathogens and bears annoying characteristics that limit its land application. For the sewage to be applicable on land, several stabilization methods can be used. Stabilization with lime (CaO) is used to raise pH and temperature and therefore, according to ASTM standards, reduce pathogen levels and achieve compliance with regulatory requirements. Although the process results in the production of a stabilized material, its direct application to soils is rather limited mainly due to the improper product texture. Inert materials can be further added to sewage sludge stabilized with lime to tackle this problem. The objective of this study is to investigate the potential use of dried bauxite residues as an inert material together with lime for the stabilization of sewage sludge from a municipal water treatment plant. It was indicated that the addition of bauxite residues and lime to sewage sludge apart from meeting the requirements of ASTM standards, it further reduces moisture content, improves material texture and eliminates odors. It was also found that although some elements leachability increased due to the treatment with lime, it further decreased when bauxite residues were also added.

Development of computer-based information systems is predicated on the merger of rapidly developing computer technology and growing managerial demands for information. The focus of this section is on managing the development and implementation of information systems for the 1980's. It is the experience of the majority of contributors to this volume that among unresolved problems of major dimensions in a mineral organization are those of managing the computer-based information systems resource itself. There are three major reasons for this: (1) mineral information systems are relatively new to the senior management of a mining company or a mineral organization; (2) problems are compounded by a developing technology, a new type of personnel with a changing experience/education mix; and (3) an organizational structure and location which, in many organizations, are still being examined. The three authors in this section present aspects of managing the information systems function which, based on their experience, are common to the solution of the problem. The premise that the information systems function has been placed appropriately within the entire business plan of the firm has been made by the authors in their discussion of the various aspects of the management process.

Both regular and Silver Impregnated Activated Carbon (SIAC) were studied for their effectiveness in removing WAD (Weak Acid Dissociated) cyanides from solutions at pH = 10. SIAC has already been shown to be effective in the removal of free cyanide down to 30 ppb or less. The present work deals with complexed cyanides. Zinc cyanide was used to represent the WAD component. At pH=10, in either batch or column tests it was not possible to lower the total cyanide in solution from either 30 or 8 ppm to less than 1 ppm, using SIAC, regular activated carbon as received, or after grinding. Silver (metal) impregnation of the carbon was not beneficial in the removal of WAD cyanide. However, when silver is added as silver ions (nitrate), the cyanide is adsorbed as silver cyanide in preference to zinc cyanide. The latter compound converts to zinc (hydr) oxide. This way, the cyanide concentration in solution can be lowered below 1 ppm, even when zinc cyanide is already adsorbed on the carbon used. A single exploratory test with added copper ions indicated a similar effect for that system.

Introduction The March 1969 issue of Civil Engineering contained on article entitled "BART" Subway Construction: Planning and Costs" authoried by Thomas R. Kuesel. This article describes in some detail the innovations developed in planning and management to undertake the design and construction of the BART Project. This 75 mile long system contained 17 miles of urban tunnels and 13 subsurface stations. Within this article Mr. Kuesel very nicely listed the cost of the 70,000 linearfeet of bored tunnel, 23,380 linearfeet of cut and cover tunnel, and the costs of the thirteen underground stations. Ten years subsequent to the publishing of Mr. Kuesels article, it is very sobering to realize that San Francisco obtained a bargain of a magnitude that we are just beginning to realize. Table 1 is a listing of tunneled line sections taken from the paper. The average cost shown in this figure, including sections constructed under compressed air is $1,620 per foot of tunnel, with bid dates ranging from June 1966 thru October 1968. This average cost translated to about $16 million per double track mile of twin tunnel system.

There are 3 steps in the process of forming a mine ventilation system, (1) selecting a reasonable ventilation pattern (included pit shaft arrangement); (2) optimizing of the ventilation network and (3) computing and outputting the flow splitting results of the network with the optimal ventilating equipments selected. In the past, the first step was relied on artificial decision-making. In order to design a common ventilation system, some ventilation experts were needed to participate or do some examinations. Even so, the design made was reasonable only for those experts. If there is a mistake in the first step, then even the followed 2 steps are best done, the losses are very difficult to retrieve. So that, the first step is very important. The development of expert systems provided an efficient means and tool for all engineering fields. This paper presents an expert system of selecting mine ventilation pattern and pit shaft arrangement. After testing many times, it is shown that the system can perform the first step of designing a mine ventilation system, and can help the experts doing their study works more efficiently.

Following the last Cholera Epidemic in 1872, resulting in approximately 400 deaths, the City Council of Munich decided to re¬place the former water supply system within the city limits by tapping new water supply areas outside of the city. Since 1883 Munich has been obtaining its water from the Mangfall River catchment located some 35 km to the south. Its most distinguishing characte¬ristics are as follows: 1) the water is free-flowing, i.e., a pumping system is not required as the catchment area is 100 m higher than the city; 2) the water does not normally have to be treated, meaning "spring fresh" tap water. On a daily basis, 300,000 m3 of water flow through the more than 100 year old pipes, accounting for 70% of the city's daily need. There was originally no requirement of a water tight system as strategically installed drain pipes prevented the build-up of exter¬nal water pressure on the lining. As the qua¬lity of today's water has become significant¬ly worse, the tunnels are now in dire need of restoration or replacement.

The McDonald gold deposit is located in the upper Blackfoot Valley in Lewis and Clark County in west-central Montana, about 65 km (40 miles) northwest of Helena and 13 km (8 miles) east of Lincoln (Fig. 1). The McDonald project area covers about 20.7 km2 (8 sq miles) of elevated terrain on the north side of the Blackfoot Valley. The Blackfoot River lies 1 km (0.6 miles) south of the McDonald deposit. East Butte and West Butte rise 300 m (985 ft) above the Blackfoot Valley to an elevation of 1,750 m (5,740 ft). They conveniently divide the area into two parts. The Seven-Up Pete Joint Venture (SPJV) is a partnership between Phelps Dodge Mining (72.25%) and CR Montana, a subsidiary of Canyon Resources (27.75%). SPJV controls about 83 km2 (32 sq miles) of mineral and surface rights in the Lincoln area. The McDonald project is on state-owned and private land. The joint venture has conducted exploration since 1989 at the Seven-Up Pete, McDonald and Keep Cool areas (Fig. 1).

Sulphide mineral flotation is known to be affected by oxidation-reduction conditions in the pulp, although there is some doubt as to whether it is the oxidizing environment or the type of oxidant which influences flotation. Variations in the oxidizing conditions of the pulp and their subsequent effect on flotation were examined for two types of natural sulphide ore, a galenasphalerite ore and a complex pyrite ore. Different gas mixtures ranging from pure nitrogen to pure oxygen were used to control the oxidizing conditions. Zinc recovery increased with a more oxidizing environment, and nitrogen gas acted almost as a depressant for sphalerite in the flotation of the Pb-Zn ore. For the complex pyrite ore, the selectivity between chalcopyrite and both gangue and pyrite improved when the environment was oxidizing, resulting in higher Cu recovery in the copper rougher concentrate. The use of an oxygen rich flotation gas was found to be a suitable method for changing the oxidizing conditions and improving flotation under controlled conditions. The flotation results were correlated to the oxygen content and the redox potential, parameters which describe the pulp chemistry conditions.

The application of in-situ leaching for abstraction of uranium and the analysis of parameters required for evaluation of uranium deposit. the procedure of evaluation of uranium dewsit for the purpose of in-situ leaching as well as the concept related were introduced. For building knowledge base, discussion is emphasized on production rule, which wasused in ESILU, on representation of rules and facts and application as well. From the system menu provided in the paper, the readers will, in a certain content, under- stand the functions of system structure and the way to set up. Several paragraphs are written concentrated on the procedure of backward reasoning and the principle of inference mechanisms combined with knowledge bases. Tracing interpretation and acquisition of knowledge with interactive method, which the system flexibility is considerably strengthened, are the main specific features of ESILU.

As more and more computer software is written for geological mapping applications, the users of the software are discovering the problems of transferring data between the programs, maintaining correct data and integrating maps produced last week with those produced today. One way to deal with these situations is by using a geographic information system (GIs). Last September the USGS and National Academy of Science held a 5-day GIs symposium on integrating technology and geoscience applications (USGS, 1988). It was followed in October by GEOTECH '88 (Peters and Krajewski 1989) which had a session exclusively for GIs applications in the Geo-Sciences. Editorials in Geobyte (Leonard, 1986, 1988) suggested that geographic information systems will be the next major computer programs to be adopted by the mineral industries. As far- back is 1985, the Computer Oriented Geological Society (COGS) printed An Introduction to GIs in their newsletter (Katz, 1985). About 20 years ago, a revolutionary idea occurred in the world of business data processing. It was the idea that all related data be stored in a standard format, in a single place and that all related computer application programs would use the same data.

Since the 1948 introduction of hydraulic fill at the Sudbury Ontario Mines of the International Nickel Company of Canada, 32,000,000 tons of water-borne sandfill and 420,000 tons of portland cement addition have been placed in underground workings. Fill method mining, currently conducted at six of the ten operating mines, accounts for 28 percent of the total mines underground production. Both classified mill tailings and screened alluvial pit sand are used as fill for cut-and-fill primary mining, undercut-and-fill pillar recovery, and backfilling of blasthole and shrinkage stopes. Cemented fill, consisting of a lean mixture of portland cement, is used in areas where a stabilized fill is required to reduce dilution and aid in the recovery of adjacent pillar ore.

The barite industry shares with its associates in the minerals industry the impediments of excessive federal and state regulations. We have learned to exist with the Organic Act of 1976, the Mine Safety and Health Act of 1966, and the Multiple Use Act of 1955. I do not mean to imply by the above that all aspects of mining legislation have been detrimental, however, each of you has been subjected to interpretative restrictions by federal or state bureaucrats. As frustrating and costly as this is to the barite industry, it is not the primary problem facing our segment of the industry at the present time. Our major difficulty today deals not with too much government regulation, but with the lack of a cohesive and consistent government energy program. This administration and those that have preceded it have dealt with intermittent energy crises on an emergency basis. If we remove the political rhetoric which has surrounded each of the more recent major crises, we can liken the action of our federal government to that of a rural volunteer fire department which devotes its entire efforts toward extinguishing existing fires rather than the developing of programs designed to prevent future fires. The lack of a comprehensive energy program has created an environment in which long range planning is extremely difficult, if not impossible.

The kinetics of electrodeposition of gold from dilute solutions of alkaline KAu(CN)2 at different gold and free cyanide concentrations on a gold rotating disk electrode were investigated by use of a steady-state linear potential scan technique. The design and performance of a laboratory electrowinning cell with a reticulated nickel cathode, operating in the flow-through mode, for the removal of low levels of gold ions from aqueous cyanide media is described. During the batch recirculation of oxygen-free gold cyanide solutions, the gold concentration was reduced from 10 ppm to <0.5 ppm with current efficiencies of up to 80%. The influence of solution flow rate through the cathode and of the pore size of the reticulated nickel foam is discussed. The removal of gold ions from solutions of low ionic strength was also investigated.

Modern microprocessor systems make it possible to use several variables to anticipate changes in the process and to react with responses before upsets can be magnified by the process or by control action. Through tighter control, "insurance" can be eliminated from process set points without affecting product quality. In actual operation with a traveling grate furnace this control philosophy has produced savings of up to 20% in fuel consumption and 8% in fan power usage while producing a more consistent quality product.

Kerr-McGee Coal Corporation has used diesel face haulage and support equipment at its dual-seam Galatia Mine in Southern Illinois since production activities commenced in 1983. The mine began production from its lower seam, the Harrisburg No. 5 coal seam, in October 1983 and from the upper Herrin No.6 coal seam in April 1985. Before production began, the company developed a program designed to make use of the flexibility offered by diesel equipment. While productivity was an important goal, the top priority of the program was to provide a safe and healthy work environment for the miners. Management believed that high productivity would naturally follow. History has proven this belief to be true.

With high expectations and promises, computers were introduced to the mining industry in the late 1950s and 1960s. Applications spread in the 1970s when capabilities began to catch up to early promises, and people within the industry began to see the benefits of using computers in business and engineering. The 1980s have seen a wide acceptance of computers, both large and small, and the use of computers is accelerating throughout the industry. Computers have changed dramatically over the last 25 years. The power of some microcomputers matches the capabilities of main frame computers from less than 10 years ago. The variety of software on these micros exceeds what is available on many larger computers today. Changes over the next 10 years are likely to be greater than those of the last 10 years. Making use of available computer technology while trying to cope with the rapid changes in this industry will take much effort within mining. To take advantage of existing computers, consider and evaluate: project needs and applications; professional, administrative, and support personnel; computer software and technology; and computer and related hardware. Note that this list is in the order of decreasing importance. These categories are also presented in the order for which organization and solutions should be provided to get the most out of computers. To start with a computer and go up the list has cost many mining companies needless expenditures, wear and tear on personnel, and frustration. It is assumed for this article that the need for computer tools is self evident. You can do without a computer by using the appropriate techniques (manual methods) with any required shortcuts plus a lot of personnel time. Indeed, several companies are doing that as a "solution" to what to do with their excess engineering personnel in these lean times. However, the future may be better served if some of these people could be prepared to handle the applications and technology presently available. People and Problems To present the factors related to turning the computer into a productivity aide, it may be enlightening to examine some common people problems that reduce productivity. The most valuable resource any mining company has is its mining professionals. And, particularly with computers, people either make the successes or create the barriers, not the machines. The following list of people problems (syndromes and complexes) has been amply observed during some 23 years of the author&apos;s experience with computers and their applications in mining. Home Grown Syndrome - "Nobody else can really understand my problem or provide `exactly&apos; what I need to solve it." While there may be some truth to this syndrome, it would be an unusual project that cannot be handled with existing solutions for at least 75-80% of the needs. Having a base to build on will also speed the development of any remaining needs. It does not seem justified to start all over for a new application, even if "our problem is unique." Not Invented Here Syndrome - This "justification" for the continued existence and budgets of some groups has various forms: "It wasn&apos;t done here so it obviously can&apos;t do the project the way I think it should be done"; and, "If it wasn&apos;t invented here, it obviously

Introduction This paper attempts to describe the characteristics of the industrial minerals segment of the minerals industry that make it different from the other segments. Also described are the trends, strengths, and shortcomings in the industrial minerals segment. This may help professionals in the minerals industry determine if there is a place for them in industrial minerals. Industry Overview It is difficult to generalize when describing the industrial minerals industry. Some products, such as cement and potash, are produced exclusively by large, well capitalized and technically sophisticated companies. Others, such as sand and gravel, are generally produced by small, family-owned companies operating on a shoestring budget. Still other products, such as feldspar, are produced by both types of companies. Not only are the companies vastly different, the products and marketing of their products are also different. Industrial mineral products are sold based on their physical characteristics (abrasives), or their chemical characteristics (trona), or both (glass sand). Marketing can be direct by the producing plant, a corporate office handling products form several plants, or through distributors. The geologic, mining, and processing skills needed can be minimal or sophisticated. There can even be large differences in the technical skills needed in two plants producing the same product. One feldspar producer may only need to mine and grind his ore, while another may use a delicate flotation process. One easy generalization is that there are industrial mineral operations in all geographic locations. A second is that industrial minerals offers more opportunities to entrepreneurs than the metals field because of the variety in the sizes and types of operations. Industry Growth Industrial minerals must be considered a mature industry. Consequently, little exciting growth can be expected. Over the past 30 years, industry sales have grown at a rate of 6.2%, compared to a 6.7% growth rate of the GNP (Kliff, 1978). A 3.8% growth rate has been forecast for the remainder of this century. The fortunes of those plants producing a product for local consumption will depend on the prosperity of the local economy. The fortunes of those plants that sell into the national market will depend on their competitiveness in their industry. Major industrial mineral products are shown in Table 1. The first three commodities account for 66% of the industrial minerals market. Typically, deposits of stone, sand and gravel, and the limestone, silica, and clay needed for cement are easy to find and mine. Role of Mining Engineers and Geologists Because a sophisticated techcical knowledge of geology or mining is not required, very few geologists and mining engineers are employed in industrial minerals. Geologists working for these companies function less as geologists than managers and executives dealing with permitting and land acquisition. Likewise, mining is done mostly by open-pit methods. It is generally supervised by an individual experienced in the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment, not a mining engineer trained in rock mechanics or computer methods of mine planning. What of the geologists and mining engineers employed by the industrial minerals industry? Many gained their positions as a result of their experience dealing with the regulatory agencies that control the operations of all mines and mills. Their technical expertise in geology or mining becomes only a side benefit. Bechtel Civil and Minerals, Inc., one of the Bechtel group of companies, is a large engineering and construction firm that services the mining industry, among others. The firm&apos;s head, S. D. Bechtel Jr., comments on how his E&C company is dealing with the recessionary economy. First, he offered a historical perspective. About a half century ago-in the middle of the Great Depression-W. A. Bechtel and several business partners drew up a fixed price bid to build the Hoover Dam. At that moment in history, the W. A. Bechtel Co. was a modest success, but the times were troubled and uncertain. Money was scarce and a lot of contractors across the country were one project ahead of bankruptcy. The bid for Hoover was a make-or-break proposition for Bechtel, and it turned out successfully. The Hoover Dam was a no-frills operation in an isolated and harsh environment. There was plenty of hard work, long hours, and not many amenities. Controlling costs was critical. Everyone knew what had to be done, and why and what the consequences were. Today&apos;s Challenge Bechtel is now a bigger, more complex organization whose management views the current economic recession as a challenge to be met in much the same way W. A. Bechtel met the challenge of the Hoover Dam: by pulling together with a sense of purpose and direction. In many respects, Bechtel&apos;s situation today has a number of parallels to that which faced my grandfather. The company is eminently successful, but times are tough and there are plenty of signs that they could get tougher. My grandfather bet on the Hoover Dam to insure the future health of his company and I think we can work together again in that same tradition, make some tough decisions together, and the company&apos;s future can be just as promising. The first and most important requirement is to make certain that everyone understands the situation. The Bechtel group of companies are in an excellent financial position now. Its workload hit an alltime high in 1982 and it is well positioned in its principal markets. But the next two years may be critical for the company. Traditionally, Bechtel&apos;s work load lags behind general developments in the economy. Although many of its clients continue to suffer serious business difficulties, Bechtel is only beginning to feel the impact. The worldwide market for basic metals remains soft; relatively low prices and abundant supplies of oil and gas have flattened the petroleum market and made once promising synfuels projects economically unattractive; utility clients are still caught in the vise between overregulation and escalating costs. And persistently high, long-term interest rates have made capital investments expensive and difficult to justify. The company maintained a healthy workload through 1982. In some areas it has had little new work and consequently has been forced to lay off some staff as projects have been canceled or concluded. In other areas new work has tided the company over and more people have been hired. But new work bookings have fallen off, creating some uncertainty for the near future. 1983 requirements are clear, although seemingly contradictory. Belt tightening and cost reduction are necessary for Bechtel to remain healthy and competitive, enabling it to handle a possible further downturn with a minimum of turmoil and dislocation. At the same time, we need to allocate resources and funds in areas that will keep us positioned for the turn-around marketplace.
