The Grants uranium region of northwest New Mexico is the largest uranium district in the United States (approximately 50% of U.S. production plus reserves) and one of the largest In the world, with approximately 900 million pounds U308 production plus reserves. Deposits of the region are unusual among sandstone deposits for their high content of epigenetic carbonaceous material, generally interpreted but not proved to be of humic origin--that is, co-extensive with uranium in the primary deposits. Virtually all production in the region has been from the Jackpile Sandstone and Westwater Canyon Member of the Jurassic Morrison Formation. The tabular uranium deposits contain, in addition to humate and uranium, significant authigenic phyllosilicates, quartz overgrowths, humate-replaced detrital silicates, and a trace-metal assemblage typical of other sandstone uranium deposit types. Surrounding the deposits in the two sandstone units of the Morrison Formation is an alteration zone within which iron leaching has altered detrital ilmenite-magnetite to residual masses of titanium oxides. Feldspar alteration is locally present within this zone, below deposits in the Jackpile Sandstone, and above those in the Westwater Canyon Member. The feldspar alteration increases in inten¬sity toward the Brushy Basin Member which separates the two sandstone units, ranging from partial replacement to replacement and dissolution of plagioclase and sanidine. Spatial relations among the epigenetic humate, authigenic silicates, and the broad alteration zones that extend from the Brushy Basin Member to and including the uranium deposits suggest that (a) the organic material was involved in the unusual silicate alteration, transport, and authigenesis, and (b) that the humates originated in shales of the Brushy Basin Member. Stratigraphic relations among the Brushy Basin Member and the overlying Jackpile Sandstone and underlying Westwater Canyon Member suggest [in turn] that there was continuous, interfingering deposition controlled in part by contemporaneous basement subsidence along northwest- and northeast-trending zones. Following minor erosion of upper Jackpile Sandstone and deposition of basal organic-rich Cretaceous sediments, the silicates of the Jackpile Sandstone were once again altered by organic-bearing fluids, this time permeating down from Cretaceous sediments and partly obliterated ore-stage alteration.

By implementing various mining practices, mine operators can reduce the respirable dust exposure levels of the roof bolter and the continuous miner operators. The Bureau of Mines has developed a computer program, entitled AMP (Alternative Mining Practices), that gives a quantitative comparison of these reductions. The alternative mining practices and their corresponding reductions in dust exposure levels that are evaluated by the program include a remote control continuous miner, a half-curtain ventilation system, two auxiliary fan-tubing bypass ventilation systems, a modified cutting sequence, a comparison between single-split and double-split ventilation networks, and a comparison between exhausting brattice and exhausting tubing. Descriptions of each of these mining practices are included in the report. The report also includes a hypothetical case study to show how AMP enables mine operators to select the technique(s) that is best suited to their particular needs. AMP is a compiled basic program that has been designed to run on computers with a DOS version 2.0 or later operating system. It includes high resolution graphics (640 X 200 dot positions) designed to run with video boards that are functionally compatible with the IBM Monochrome/ Printer Adapter. Graphic screens are selected from menus, and can be bypassed if the computer is not equipped to handle high resolution mode. Their primary function is to show proper implementation of the mining practices evaluated by the program. This package requires a minimum of 256K bytes of RAM. Numerous terms are used for rocks containing calcium carbonate so that confusion frequently occurs in the common language. Chalk and marble are two extremes among a wide variety of carbonate rocks including limestones, marls, travertine and other calcareous materials. We will deal mainly with the purest types of natural calcium carbonates which are widely used today in many industrial applications.

The sand dunes which line the east shore of Lake Michigan resulted after the last, or Wisconsin, glacial period in Michigan. Melt-water streams carried vast quantities of glacial debris to the near shore areas of predecessors to Lake Michigan. As the lake levels receded, these vast quantities of sand were exposed to the prevailing westerly winds, which was the last major process that acted upon the sand and resulted in the formation of the dunes. 1 These dunes are one of the significant natural resources within the state. Michigan dune sands supply about 90% of the foundry sand used in the automotive industry, and 40% of the foundry sand used 2 for all purposes within the United States. The deposits owe their importance to the following factors: grain size distribution, grain shape, mineral composition and location with respect to the foundry sand market. In spite of their economic significance these I deposits are in jeopardy through legislative preemption.

The first recorded discovery of diamonds in Australia was in 1851 from New South Wales. Subsequent prospecting has shown alluvial occurrences of diamond to be relatively widespread through much of the Tasman Fold Belts of Eastern Australia and production to date is estimated to be some 500 000 carats from a number of 'small alluvial fields. Despite extensive exploration though, no primary rock source carrying significant diamond contents has ever been confirmed in Eastern Australia. Conversely, diamond exploration of the older Western and Central Cratons of Australia over the past 30 years has discovered 12 fields containing 360 kimberlites, lamproites and lamprophyric volcanic pipes, dykes and other intrusives, of which 180 have been confirmed to be diamondiferous. Only one pipe however, the 1200 Ma high grade Argyle lamproite and associated near-by alluvials, has proved to be economically exploitable with current annual production of 40 million carats valued at approximately US$400 million. Production from the open-pit will be sustainable until at least 2003. This paper briefly summarizes the history of diamond discovery in Australia, principal diamondiferous provinces and deposits, current exploration activities and the potential for future discoveries.

Gentlemen: The subject of this paper is: ADVANCED APPLICATIONS OF BUCKET WHEEL EXCAVATORS AND RECLAIMERS. Against an urgent world wide energy crisis, the role of bucket wheel excavators and reclaimers in the surface mining of fossil fuels and other ores has been raised to new prominence. This paper will review the reasons for the expanded application of bucket wheel technology, its unique contributions, and other factors relative to volume, cost, versatility, and efficiency. Today, surface mining is faced with the twin challenge of (1), accelerating the rate of removal of massive quantities of overburden and ore, and (2), replacing comparable high volumes of overburden back into the mined-out portion of the pit. Optimum quantitites for - a single electrical power plant now range from 5 to 15 million tons of coal per year. The use of bucket wheels offers the best method for meeting this challenge at lowest possible cost. For example, an advanced application that also satisfies environmental concerns involves the simultaneous functioning of two bucket wheel excavators during surface mining operations. Working at spaced intervals and different levels in conjunction with a transfer conveyor and stacker, one excavator removes the ore while the other one transfers overburden to a stacker that replaces it back into the open pit. The result of this continuously operating cycle is: (1) removal of ore and replacement of overburden back into the pit in massive quantities, (2) at accelerated volume and extreme low cost that cannot be matched by conventional loading machines of any size, and (3) fulfills a basic environmental requirement which is to

Exploration by Anaconda Minerals Co. in the Rico area from 1978 through 1983 resulted in dis¬covery of the Silver Creek molybdenum deposit. The drill-indicated resource is 40 Mt (44 million st) of 0.31% Mo, and projections suggest that the deposit may exceed 182 Mt (200 million st). No source intrusion has been intersected by drilling, but its presence is sugested by intramineral silicic alkali-alaskite porphyry dikes observed at the surface and in drill holes. Age dates and fluid inclusion studies indicate that the deposit was formed 5.2 ± 0.2 m.y. ago and that more than 1200 (3937 ft) of cover has since been removed by erosion. The deposit is hosted by Precambrian quartzite and greenstone, and Paleozoic sediments. Three prominent faults intersect in the vicinity of the molybdenum deposit, and one of these, the Last Chance fault, strongly influenced the shape and location of the deposit. The juxtaposition of host rocks across the Last Chance fault reflects significant offset spanning at least three different periods. Wallrock alteration associated with the deposit includes potassic, phyllic, and propylitic zones in noncalcareous rocks and garnet and anhydrite-diopside zones in the carbonates. All +0.2% Mo mineralization is within the potassic and garnet zones. Premineral faults that intersect the deposit contain the only surface molybdenum, tungsten, and fluorine anomalies. Dispersion halos of the indicator elements were defined by drilling in the discovery phase of exploration, and are particularly well-developed in the hanging wall of the Last Chance fault.

This device offers a significant power savings on wet fine grinding applications when compared to conventional tumbling mills. This paper describes the laboratory application of this mill wet grinding hydrated alumina to products of 50 percent passing 2 to 6 microns.

Quebrada Blanca (QB) is a copper project located in the semi-arid Andean highlands of northern Chile. The operation is situated 170 km ( 105 miles) southeast of the port of Iquique and 30 km (18 miles) west of the border with Bolivia, at an altitude of about 4300 m (14,000 ft) (Fig. 1). The QB ore body is a secondarily enriched porphyry copper deposit containing reserves of 85 Mt (93 million st) grading 1.3% copper. Underlying the enriched zone is a significant primary ore zone containing several hundred million tons grading about 0.5% copper. In the late 1970s and early 1980s Falconbridge and its affiliates spent $20- $30 million exploring the deposit and conducting feasibility studies. Falconbridge, however, decided not to develop the property. It was returned to its owners, Empresa National de Mineria (ENAMI), a Chilean state mining corporation. In 1988, ENAMI announced its intention to privatize the property through public bidding. Cominco Resources, then 61% owned by Cominco Ltd., examined the property and the extensive data base developed by Falconbridge. In conjunction with its parent company, Cominco Resources submitted a proposal to ENAMI to construct an open- pit mine, with heap leaching and solvent extraction/electrowinning (SX-EW) processing facilities. The plan would use patented heap leaching technology developed by Sociedad MineraPudahuel (SMP), a privately owned Chilean mining company. At that time, a $150-million project that would produce about 45 kt/a (50,000 stpy) of cathode copper was envisaged.

INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARY This short paper deals with the history of the Nickel Plate Mine from 1898 to 1987, with the major focus on the time period 1984 to 1987. Operations from 1898 to 1955 are reviewed in a cursory manner with the emphasis on some interesting points in the early 20th century. A review of the major exploration work carried out in 1984 to 1987 is presented and the process of moving the project through feasibility, government permitting and construction is described. The Hedley gold camp is situated approximately 40 kilometres east-southeast of Princeton, in southern British Columbia. The area has had a long history of gold mining and between 1902 and 1955 approximately 1.5 million ounces of gold were won from several mineralized skarn orebodies. Most production came from the Nickel Plate and Hedley Mascot mines. AN EARLY TO MID 20TH CENTURY SUMMARY The Nickel Plate is one of the oldest mines in the province. The mine had operated from 1904 to 1930 and, after a period of shutdown, from 1934 to 1955. The mine was revived in 1967 for exploration and. will resume production during the first half of 1987. In the first period the Yale Mining Company and Daly Reduction Company operated for six years and Hedley Gold Mining Company for twenty-one. In the second period the mine was operated by the Kelowna Exploration Company Limited and Kelowna Mines Hedley Limited for twenty-one years. In the present period the mine has been revived by Mascot Gold Mines Limited.

INTRODUCTION Much of present fracture toughness testing con¬cerns chevron notched specimens (Newman Jr., 1984) since these, in principle, require neither fatigue precracking nor more registration than failure load to determine fracture toughness. Two such specimens which can be made from diamond drilled rock cores with minimal machining are the Short Rod (Barker, 1977) and the Chevron Edge Notch Round Bar in Bend¬ing or CENRBB Specimen (Ouchterlony, 1980). Even if the precracking property is especially valuable for a material like rock, practice has made the relative advantages of these chevron notched specimens much less apparent (Ouchterlony, 1982; Ouchterlony and Sun, 1983). Enough remains, however, to have the Commission on Testing Methods of the International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) focus on them as standard configurations in a "Suggested Method for Determining Fracture Tough¬ness of Rock Material", which is in preparation. This paper presents material which supports the ISRM effort: 1. An experimental compliance calibration of the Chevron Bend (CENRBB or CB for short) and re¬sulting formulas. 2. Specimen tolerances, evaluation formulas, and loading rate requirements relating to both Short Rod and Chevron Bend Specimens of suggest¬ed standard proportions. 3. Some fracture toughness values obtained with the Chevron Bend Specimen. This material is mainly based on two reports (Ouchterlony, 1984 and 1985). Microseismic passive velocity tomography is becoming an effective technology for large-scale mining-induced stress monitoring in underground mines, especially in the field of early warning of mining-induced hazards. Aiming at the problems of missing low-magnitude events in traditional microseismic monitoring, as well as the potential to increase the resolution of the tomograms in both time and space, a microseismic passive velocity tomography analysis method based on the template matching method was proposed. First, the template matching method was used to pick microseismic events. Then, the probabilistic, non-linear, global-search earthquake location method was used to locate the events and calculate travel time and travel distance. Finally, the fast-marching method was used to carry out passive velocity tomography analysis to image the movement of the abutment stress associated with the longwall. The results show that the selected templates can identify more microseismic events than the traditional microseismic analysis, and the variation trend of events in each day is consistent with the data from the traditional analysis. Using microseismic event locations, travel times and travel distance can effectively complete microseismic passive velocity tomography analysis in each day during the study period and can effectively identify the forward and side abutment stress zones of that longwall panel. This study provides a reference for the identification of mine-induced high stress zones, which has implications for hazard identification and mitigation, with increased resolution of the tomograms in time and space.

The concepts of conditional probabi1ity and geometrical probability are used to establish a relation between the probability density of the trace length and the probability density of the discontinuity diameter. The discontinuity is represented as a thin circular disc. A numerical solution scheme is used to obtain the probability density of the disc diameter from the probability density of the trace length. An example was used to illustrate the possibly large difference between the mean discontinuity diameter and the mean trace length.

Two optoelectronic detectors were developed by CONSOL R&D for fine coal processing applications. One sensing device is used to estimate the amount of fine coal in the solids fraction of the froth flotation tailings slurry. The other probe, based on similar technology, is capable of measuring sol ids concentrations as high as 10 weight percent in fine coal slurry streams. These patented optoelectronic sensors are installed in several CONSOL coal preparation plants and are an integral part of the fine-coal control systems.

Flotation of several copper and lead-zinc ores has been carried out with mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) as promoter. The results of laboratgory batch flotation tests have been compared with those obtained when using more common collectors like xanthates or dithiophosphates. It generally appears that MBT is an effective collector of all the sulfides, including pyrite, but that high selectivity is rather difficult to attain, except for gangue drop-out. Some kinetic tests have been performed to check the froth production rate by MBT as compared to other collectors.

Quick, inexpensive and accurate mineral-phase identification is of utmost importance to applied mineralogists. The precise relationship between the intensity of measured backscattered electrons in a scanning electron microscope and the average atomic number of the specimen is still argued. Nevertheless, much can be gained by using backscattered electron images to identify mineral phases in a specimen. An application was developed to facilitate this method and makes it a practical, inexpensive and valuable option in many mineralogical investigations. This paper examines the methods available to improve climatic conditions around a deep, high production longwall district of a British coal mine using results from a computer model. Such methods include the provision of increased ventilation quantities, the application of refrigeration, the reduction of heat input at source and the use of alternative ventilation systems. An approach to the solution of a climatic problem is explained with reference to other coal mine contaminants and a cooling strategy for deep high production British coal mines is described.

The first commercial installation of the Dashaveyor has recently been completed at the White Pine Mine in Northern Michigan. After four years of development work, including prototype testing, and pilot plant operation, this new and unique system is being tested under operational conditions. Many of you may be familiar with the concept through numerous articles which have appeared in the technical press. But this discussion of the system will be simplified and less time consuming with the presentation of a portion of a film showing the Dashaveyor in actual operation. After the movie, I will show some slides which will supplement and clarify it and hopefully lay the basis for questions you will undoubtedly wish to ask.

This paper presents a history of a successful three year effort in locating a large, economic deposit of high purity limestone. The exploration program has been carried out by Ernest K. Lehmann & Associates, Inc., geological consultants, for Dravo Corporation, owner of the limestone property which is now under development. The permission of Mr. L. P. Struble, Jr, President of Dravo Lime Company, and Mr. M. W. Robinson, Director of Research and Development, to present this paper is gratefully acknowledged. The limestone property is on the Ohio River near Maysville in northern Kentucky, 60 miles east of Cincinnati (Fig. 1). The area lies at the eastern flank of the Cincinnati Arch, a regional structure where the Lower Paleozoic strata crop out below the adjacent younger sedimentary rocks of the Illinois and Apallachian basins. In general, the limestone formations of the Middle Ordovician High Bridge group offer the best potential for industrial limestone in Kentucky and adjacent parts of Ohio and Indiana. These formations are exposed along the axis of the Cincinnati Arch in central Kentucky. Toward the west, east and north, strata of the High Bridge group are progressively deeper, concealed beneath a succession of interbedded fossiliferous limestone and shale. The High Bridge group limestone formations are shallow-marine deposits largely of tidal flat, shallow lagoon and related environments. Principal lithologies include cryptocrystalline micritic limestone and crystalline dolomitic limestone to dolomite. Shale and bioclastic limestone are subordinate but the proportion of shale increases in the basal formations. Characteristic, is the occurrence of several thin beds of bentonite that serve as regional stratigraphic key horizons.
