This circular is part IV of the third paper (entitled "Sand and Gravel Excavation") of a series summarizing the technical problems involved in the production and preparation of sand and gravel. Part I discussed the use of power shovels, draglines, and excavator cranes; part II discussed the use of power scrapers, slackline cableway excavators and hydraulic monitors; and part III discussed the use of hydraulic, clamshell, ladder, and dipper dredges. This circular discusses haulage equipment in general, particularly the use of industrial cars with locomotives or hoists as the motive power. Part V, to follow, will discuss the use of other types of haulage equipment.

Develop quieted, hand-held pneumatic percussion drills that can replace standard hand-held drills in many underground mining applications. The Problem Percussion drills are the noisiest machines used in underground mines; noise levels of 115 to 120 dBA are common, requiring the use of hearing protectors and limiting the time a miner is permit-ted to operate the drill during an 8-hour shift. Hand-held pneumatic percussion drills pose a particularly difficult problem because the operator cannot be isolated from the noise source (e.g., an acoustical cab), and alternative technologies for drilling roof bolt holes and blastholes in tight quarters are not readily available.

The prolonged exposure of equipment operators to shock and whole-body vibration (WBV) is linked to cumulative back, neck and abdominal disorders. In low coal mines, space restrictions make it difficult for seat suspensions to isolate operators from shock and WBV Researchers at NIOSH's Pittsburgh Research Laboratory are responding to these issues by investigating viscoelastie foams. For the full-load case, an ergonomic seat made with viscoelastie foams can isolate the shuttle-car operator from shock at 15 Hz. Researchers used results from additional foam testing using an analytical model to identify viscoelastic foams that provide shock isolation at a frequency below 5 Hz.

An experiment is described in which instrumented rock bolts were used to measure strain in the rock mass during drift development at the Stillwater Mine, Nye, Montana, USA. Two strain-gauged rock bolts were grouted into the middle of the rib next to the face. The drift was excavated in three advances, each one-half drift wide. Strains were recorded hourly by a data logger. Results show that the average change in axial bolt strain for the first and second advance was about the same and that there was almost no change in strain after the third advance. Bending strain was observed 19 cm from the head of the bolt.

Data on health-related illnesses and disease in the mining industry are scarce, and information on rates and costs is not readily available. Substantial amounts of research are being directed to addressing these issues, including work at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) mining health and safety laboratories in Spokane and Pitts-burgh. This paper briefly discusses the current status of some miner health-related issues, including those involving coal dust, silica dust, diesel particulate matter, asbestos, noise, lead, welding fumes, and skin disorders, as well as research and other activities aimed at protecting miners from occupational illnesses and disease.

Acid pollution from abandoned mines causes serious contamination of major streams in coal mining areas. In Pennsylvania alone it is estimated that 3000 miles of streams are devoid of fish and plant life because of coal mine effluent.1 The pollution arises because water and oxygen react with iron sulfide in the mine cavity to produce sulfuric acid and iron sulfate, which later find their way back into surface streams. Two general approaches to the problem are possible: (1) prevent the acid-forming reaction from taking place, (2) treat the acid mine water after it is formed so that it will not be harmful to the ecology when discharged into streams and other surface waters. The work described in this report belongs in the first category - it was based on the assumption that acid formation in the mine cavity can be prevented by keeping water (one of the reactants) out of the mine. This was to be accomplished by-forming a waterproof seal over the mine cavity which would prevent the seepage of surface water into the mine. It was planned to form such a seal at or near the surface of the ground by applying latex to the soil. Ideally a dilute latex would be applied to the soil and would penetrate to a depth of two to three feet below the surface where it would be coagulated by reacting with a constituent of the soil or by other means., A seal below the surface of the soil would have several advantages over a surface seal - it would not be subject to destruction by traffic, frost or vegetation and, more important, it would allow the use of the top soil for many agricultural purposes. A preliminary feasibility experiment was performed prior to application for the present grant. It showed that it was indeed possible to form a sub-surface seal by means of latex. A core of soil was obtained locally (Wayne, N. J.) by driving a 6.5 cm inside diameter steel pipe about 100 cm long into subsoil for a distance of 71 cm. The soil was retained within the pipe for this experiment. A part of the free space above the soil in the pipe was charged with water, and the seepage rate of the soil after it had become saturated was 15 ml/min under a total head (wet soil plus supernatant column of water) of 92 cm. After the supernatant water had drained completely, 100 ml of 5% rubber latex was added and allowed to seep into the soil. This was followed by additional water and the seepage rate was found to be 2 ml/min under the same head. This seepage rate remained unchanged when remeasured on the following day. Since there was no visible evidence of the latex in the collected drain water it is presumed to have been retained by the soil.

Twenty-five years ago, the former U.S. Bureau of Mines funded a research project aimed at developing the enabling technology for incipient failure prediction in electric power system components as a means of reducing the injuries and fatalities that sometimes occur when equipment malfunctions. Over the ensuing years, interest in this has waxed and waned, but recently interest has been growing for both civilian and military applications. This paper addresses the level of turn-to-turn insulation deterioration that can be resolved using an on-line monitoring technique. The detection of turn-to-turn defects is especially important because they are believed to represent the beginning stage of most motor winding failures.

The group of gems included under the general name "feldspar" occupies only a minor place in jewelry. Feldspars, with the possible exception of quartz, are the most important of rock-forming minerals, but most occurrences are of quite ordinary varieties, without striking color and unattractive. Few specimens are suitable for use as gem stones, but occasional crystals that exhibit unusual brilliance or play of color are cut into various shapes for personal adornment or for architectural decoration. The best known of the feldspar gems, and probably the most important in point of production, is the moonstone. Amazon stones, labradorite, sunstone, and a number of less common varieties have been produced in various parts of the world.

A.5 Conclusions and Recommendations The illustrative simulations in the previous section have demonstrated 1. Flexibility of the program to simulate a wide variety of configurations and cases. 2. Ability of the program to predict evacuation time within a small margin of error (5 percent -.n a case considered). 3. Usefulness of the program in making some of the evacuation decisions. The above leads to a conclusion that the computer program can provide a useful tool in evaluating mine evacuation in the event of a fire. Some segments of the mining industry, especially underground coal, have seen a large influx of inexperienced miners in recent years. It is anticipated that this trend will reach other mining segments over the next 10 years. This paper discusses the training needs of the younger generation of inexperienced workers who have just entered or are soon to enter the mines. Currently, many trainers are of the so-called Baby Boom generation. Can these different age groups learn to communicate across the generation gap? Even trainers who have been highly effective in the past should reassess their training styles and their classroom materials to determine if they are prepared to meet the needs of these new trainees.

This paper is concerned with the theoretical study of UHF radio communication in coal mines, with particular reference to the rate of loss of signal strength along a tunnel, and from one tunnel to another around a comer. Of prime interest are the nature of the propagation mechanism and the prediction of the radio frequency that propagates with the smallest loss. Our theoretical results are compared with measurements made by Collins Radio Co. This work was conducted as part of the Pittsburgh Mining and Safety Research Center's investigation of new ways to reach and extend two-way communications to the key individuals that are highly mobile within the sections and haulage ways of coal mines.

The United States produces all of the fuller's earth used for re- fining petroleum within its borders. On the other hand, most of the fuller's earth used in bleaching edible oils has been imported from England. Recently a few of the refiners of cottonseed oil have begun to utilize domestic fuller's earth, whereas others have been unable to substitute it successfully for English earth in their practice. Many samples of American earth distinctly superior in bleaching power to the English earth have come to the attention of the Bureau of Mines. For these reasons an investigation of the mining, preparation, and use of fuller's earth in this country, especially in its application to edible oils, was conducted in order to ascertain why our own raw material has been deemed inapplicable to our needs. During the calendar year 1912, according to figures of the United States Geological Survey," there were imported into the United States 1,970 tons of unground fuller's earth, valued at $11,619, and 17,139 tons of ground fuller's earth, valued at $133,718, these values being based on the wholesale market price at the port of origin. The addition of transportation charges, commissions, etc., make the price to the American refiner $14.50 to $16 per ton. Accord- ing to the latest figures compiled by the United States Geological Survey, the United States in 1912 produced 32,715 tons of fuller's earth, valued at $305,522, or $9.34 per ton, at the mine. Most of this domestic production was from three plants in Florida and one in southwestern Georgia and was used almost wholly for decolorizing petroleum. A small amount from other localities was used in the refining of edible oils. No figures definitely differentiating fuller's earth from other clays are kept in regard to our exports, but it is certain that several thousand tons of domestic earth was exported to Germany, and it is also true that German refiners of edible oils have

Study Design. A split-plot experimental design was used to evaluate the influence of posture, trunk angle, and rotational velocity on peak torque output and myoelectric activity during maximal trunk extension maneuvers. Objectives. To determine whether the kneeling posture alters extension torque capabilities in isometric and isokinetic exercises as compared with standing. Also, to ascertain whether recruitment of trunk muscles is modified by such a postural change. Summary of Background Data. Factors such as workplace geometry may force workers to adopt awkward or unusual postures in the performance of manual tasks. An understanding of the limitations placed on strength in unconventional working postures is crucial to the proper design of jobs. Methods. Twenty-one healthy male subjects (mean age = 36 years 7 SD) performed 12 trunk extension exertions in standing and kneeling postures. Isometric tests were performed at 22.5°. 45°, and 67.5° of trunk flexion. isokinetic tests were done at three velocities: 30°/sec, 60°/sec, and 90°/sec. Electromyographic data were collected from eight trunk muscles to assess muscle recruitment under each condition. A prior; orthogonal contrasts were specified for analysis of both torque and electromyographic data. Results. The kneeling posture was associated with a 15% decrease in peak torque output when contrasted with standing; however, no concomitant change in trunk muscle activity was evident. Trunk hyperflexion (isometric tests) and increasing rotational velocity (isokinetic tests) were associated with reduced torque in both postures. Trunk muscle activity was primarily affected by changes in trunk angle and velocity of contraction. Conclusions. A reduced extensor capability exists in the kneeling posture, despite equivalent trunk muscle activity. The similar activation patterns in both postures suggest that the strength deficit does not result from alterations in trunk muscle function. Rather, it may be the consequence of a reduced capability to rotate the pelvis in the kneeling posture, due to a disruption of the biornechanical linkage of the leg structures. Electron spin resonance measurements have now been completed on the decay kinetics of the organic free radicals formed on crushing or grinding of a well characterized anthracite coal. The free radicals exhibit a complex decay pattern for the first few hours after the grinding, and a smooth decay thereafter. Parallel hemolysis studies indicate. a half-life of the decrease in the cytotoxicity of the fresh· dust to be about half-a-day. The cytotoxicity of the freshly-made dust decreases on addition of superoxide dismutase, catalase and sodium benzoate. The hemolysis rate is lower for the dust stored in buffers as compared to air. A chemical model will be presented to accomodate the cytotoxicity and spectroscopic data, and ~heir implicati6ns to pneumoconiosis.

Operator cabs on a front-end loader and a rotary rock drill were retrofitted with ceiling mounted heating1AC units and air filtration systems. Subsequently surface coal mine field studies were conducted to evaluate the respirable dust protection these retrofitted cab systems offer to the equipment operator. A significant 10: 1 respirable dust protection factor (ratio of outside to inside cab dust levels) was measured for the front-end loader cab with positive pressurization of the cab interior. Whereas an insignificant 3: 1 respirable dust protection factor was measured for the drill cab without positive pressurization of the cab interior. These results indicate that achieving positive interior cab pressurization with retrofitted cab filtration systems is a key element to their dust control effectiveness.

Ultimately, the most important product of a hearing conservation program is the prevention of hearing loss, not the amount of hearing protection that has been purchased or whether employees are attending their annual training sessions. Audiometric testing directly reveals whether hearing losses are actually occurring in a plant. With audiometric data, we can assess overall program effectiveness, alert workers of impending hearing loss, and reveal potential employer liabilities for compensable hearing loss. Without the ability to efficiently analyze audiometric data or produce effective reports, our programs become fruitless and unproductive. Consequently, ifaudiometric data are such vital end-products, then effective audiometric technologies serve as the prime architect and generator of these fundamental data. These technologies, consisting ofaudiometers, associated peripheral hardware, and database/reporting software, deserve our consideration.

An electromagnetic sounder developed for an archaeological application in Egypt has been successfully tested in a California dolomite mine. Chambers in the mine 100 to 130 feet from the surface gave intense, well-defined echoes consistent with an average attenuation coefficient of 0.6dB/m and a relative dielectric constant of 11. By moving the transmitter and receiver units on the hillside above the underground chambers, various characteristics of the propagation could be observed such as dispersion, chamber aspect sensitivity and cross section. The transmitted pulse was one to one-and-a-half radio-frequency cycles long at a peak power of 0.2 MW. Frequencies employed were 16 to 50 MHz. The light weight, highly portable, battery-powered equipment is potentially suited to other underground sounding applications.

As the preface states, this bulletin is the fourth of a series of re- ports by the Bureau of Mines on different phases of quarrying in the United States. The first part of the bulletin describes the chief types of cements, the growth of the cement industry in this country, and the character of the raw materials used. The bulk of the report deals with quarrying methods and equipment, and gives especial attention to drilling and blasting; a chapter on rock mining and one on pros- pecting are included. Methods of manufacture are mentioned briefly, as that subject, except as related to quarrying, lies outside the scope of this report; but transportation methods and the effects of the man- ner of mixing the materials at the quarry or crushing plant on quarrying methods are discussed.

The increased demand for aluminum for military purposes during World War II necessitated the development of domestic deposits of alumina-bearing ores. Kaolin, siliceous bauxites, anorthosite, and diaspore-containing clays have been investigated and studied in the laboratory and pilot plant. The Bureau of Mines is preparing a series of reports covering investigations of these ores. The tests contained in this report are restricted to sintering and leaching tests on kaolin from South Carolina, where extensive deposits were proved to exist. The leach liquors were found to have substantially the same composition as those produced from the diaspore-containing clays, and therefore it would be expected that no difficulty would be experienced in producing calcined alumina of relatively coarse particle size and with other properties conforming to the specifications for metallurgical-grade alumina.

 The Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) method5/ has been used in surveying the carbonizing properties of American coals and, to date, in testing coals from 43 beds. The results in this report apply only to tests in the 18-inch retort at 800°, 900°, and 1,000° C. on coals from 32 beds. Table 1 gives the proximate and ultimate analyses of these coals and the name and location of mines. Coals from Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, and Washington are considered. Seven of the coals are of low-volatile, four of medium-volatile, and twenty-one of high-volatile bituminous rank. One of the high-volatile coals (No. 45) is of high-volatile C rank, whereas all the others are of high-volatile A rank.
