High-quality sheet of electrowon molybdenum was attained by a sequence of procedure on pressed and arc-melted crystalline powders. The procedures included high-temperature, high-vacuum sintering treatments and the use of metal deoxidizers instead of carbon to improve the mechanical properties of the molybdenum sheet. Rolled sheet 60 mils thick was evaluated by tensile and bend tests, hardness measurements, microstructures, and recrystallization treatments. After stress relieving, yield strength ranged from 85,000 to 110,500 psi (0.2- percent offset) and ultimate strength ranged from 87,200 to 117,250 psi with 4.5- to 25-percent elongation observed for arc-melted sheet, and 5.0- to 23- percent elongation observed for powder metallurgy sheet. In room temperature bend tests the sheet yielded plastically, indicating that the ductile-brittle transition point was below room temperature. The diamond pyramid hardness (DPH) of the molybdenum sheet changed from 214 to 293 DPH for the stress-relieved condition to 177 to 185 DPH for the fully recrystallized condition. The brittleness of recrystallized molybdenum, reported by other investigators as characteristic of sheet prepared from commercial-grade hydrogen-reduced powders, was not in evidence. Recrystallized tensile specimens pulled at room temperature had an average elongation of 31 percent.

Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) is the most common occupational disease in the U.S. with devastating consequences particularly in the mining industry. A study conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) revealed that 90% of coal miners have hearing impairment by age 50, compared to only 10% of those not exposed to occupational noise. According to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), Continuous Mining Machine (CM) operators account for 30% of workers exposed to noise doses exceeding the Permissible Exposure Level (PEL). This number becomes more dramatic considering that 49% of the total national underground coal production is extracted using these machines. In this context, NIOSH is conducting research to identify and control dominant noise sources in CMs. Previous noise source identification was performed using a Brüel &Kjær (B&K) 1.92-m diameter, 42-microphone phased array. These measurements revealed that the impacts from the conveyor chain onto the tail roller, and the impacts from the conveyor chain onto the upper deck are the dominant noise sources at the tail-section of the CM. The objectives of the work presented in this paper were: 1) To rank the noise radiated by the different sections of the conveyor, and 2) to determine the effect of a urethane-coated tail roller on the noise radiated by the tail-section. This test was conducted using an Acoustical and Vibrations Engineering Consultants (AVEC) 3.5-m diameter, 121-microphone phased array. The results from this new test show that a urethane-coated tail roller yields reductions in the tail-section of 2 to 8 dB in Sound Pressure Level in the frequency range of 1 kHz to 5 kHz. However, integration of the acoustic maps shows that the front-section and mid-section of the conveyor also contain dominant noise sources. Therefore, a urethane-coated tail roller in combination with a chain with urethane-coated flights that reduces the noise sources in the front and mid sections of the conveyor is required toyield a significant noise reduction on the CM operator?s overall exposure. These results show the applicability of phased array technology for low frequency noise source identification.

This paper presents one of a series of digests of foreign mining legisla- tion and court decisions that is being prepared in advance of a general report relative to the rights of American citizens to explore for minerals and to own and operate mines in various foreign countries. This interpretation of the laws of Switzerland has been prepared from the best information available in ashington, but is released subject to correction and amplification, if necessary, by the proper American diplomatic and consuler officers, to whom it is being referred through the courtesy of the Department of State. Sitzerland is a small country in which little mining is done, yet it has a voluminous body of mining legislation. There are two salt-mining districts in Switzerland; that at Bez, Canton of Vaud, belongs to the Canton but the deposit is worked by a private company; and those at Schweizerhalle, Rheinfelden and Ryburg are worked by a joint stock company formed by the Cantons interested. Iron ore is mined at Gonzen, Canton of St. Gallen, and large beds of gypsum are worked, mainly for domestic consumption. In general, however, although many kinds of minerals are said to have been found in Switzerland, mining operations are irreguler end relatively unimportant. Even during the world war only about 2,500 persons were employed in mining establishments and most of these were in under round stone quarries. On the other hand, the republic comprises 22 Cantons, of which 3 are divided, making 25 units, and in the absence of generel Federal legislation, each of these units virtually has its own distinct mining la Under these circumstances, it is obviously inadvisable to review the mining lars of Switzerland in the same detail as those of other countries which Lave been digested in this series. For the lars of individual Cantons, as well as for a more comprehensive summary of the Swiss legislation as a whole, the reader is referred to a recent German publication." Toward the end of 1920 , the average grades of ground feldspar offered to the pottery industry were so poor and so generally unsatisfactory that many of the largest consumers decided to take active steps for their own protection . A few of the potters made arrangements to grind their own feldspar , while others asked the Bureau of Mines to make a detailed study of the problem and to suggest methods of improvement . Accordingly such a study was undertaken, the partial results of which are outlined in this preliminary report . The outstanding features of the present feldspar industry which are of interest in this connection are stated below. (1 ) Many grinding companies do not own or control all or even a major part of their sources of crude material , but buy in job lots from many sources . (2 ) There is great need of more adequate engineering and chemical control over mines and mills . ( 3) ~ Out of date , inefficient methods and equipment for mining and grinding are in common use . (4) Little or no cooperation exists between feldspar producers , but on the contrary many feldspar companies are exceedingly secretive . This tends towards (a) preservation of obsolete methods ; ( b ) want of knowledge of the essential features of production , market requirements , and the relation between total milling and consuming capacities of the country; ( c ) inefficient and often mistaken trade practices ; ( d) unprofitable and even ruinous competition in dull periods . (5) The small size of many feldspar deposits precludes maintenance of an efficient organization at each individual mine . ( 6 ) Many of the best deposits of feldspar situated close to railroads are becoming depleted , which results in gradual lowering of grades , and increase in cost for better grades . (7) There is a lack of exact mowledge of the ceramic properties and behaviour of feldspar by some consumers , which results in ( a) purchase of feldspar on the basis of price alone , thus encouraging low production costs at the expense of quality , and ( b) inefficient and expensive cross- hauling of both crude and ground feldspar .

In an effort to decrease noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) in coal preparation plant employees, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conduct­ing research to identify and control dominant noise sources in vibrating screen (VS) machines. To this end, acoustic measurements of the noise radiated by a dewatering VS were conducted at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) using microphone phased-array technology. These measurements allowed for the identification of the screen as the dominant source in the 250 Hz 1/3-octave band. The sidewalls are the major contributors in the 315 and 400 Hz bands, whereas the eccentric mechanisms and the electric motor are the dominant sources in the 800 and 1,000 Hz bands, respectively.

Coal workers’ pneumoconiosis is the leading cause of death due to occupational illness among U.S. coal miners. This disease is caused by miners’ exposure to excessive levels of respirable coal mine dust. A personal dust monitor (PDM) has recently been developed to provide near real-time feedback to miners regarding the level of respirable coal dust in the air they breathe. The main objective of this report is to document coal miners’ reactions to this device and how they make use of the information it provides. It summarizes a field study by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health that documented the opinions of 30 miners at 4 underground coal mines concerning the use of PDMs.

Current methods of inspecting wire rope for broken wires or excessive wear include visual inspection, physical measurements of rope diameter, and electromagnetic nondestructive testing (NDT). Visual inspection and physical measurement arc the least comprehensive methods. Electromagnetic NDT enables a more thorough assessment of the condition of a wire rope, but the repeatability, accuracy, and objectivity of this method can be improved. One means of achieving this goal is to use a computer to analyze the test data and determine the condition of the wire rope, including the presence of broken wires and corrosion, and the amount of wear. An off-the-shelf data acquisition and analysis system was tested in a U.S. Bureau of Mines laboratory using a continuous loop of wire rope containing fabricated flaws. The test rope was run through a commercially available NDT instrument. The output of the instrument, normally connected to a paper strip chart recorder, was digitized and analyzed with a personal computer. These initial tests were successful in showing that the use of a computer can improve current methods of NDT waveform collection and analysis.

A semiquantitative test for the presence and identification of cesium and rubidium in rocks, clays, and mineral waters has been developed by the Bureau of Mines. The test can be used in the field, as a guide for the prospector, geologist, or mining engineer engaged in location or development [w]ork. It comprises two simple spot tests of a solution prepared from the [m]ineral sample. Phosphomolybdic acid, added to a drop of the test solution, [d]etects cesium, rubidium, and potassium in quantities as low as 60 parts per [m]illion. Silicomolybdic acid, added to a second drop of test solution, enables the operator to distinguish between cesium and/or rubidium and potassium. Test procedures, equipment requirements, and limitations of the method are described in this report. Cesium and rubidium were discovered in 1860 and 1861 by Bunsen and Kirchhoff with a spectroscope. The elements usually occur together, particularly in granite and granitic pegmatites. Rubidium does not occur as an essential constituent of any known mineral, yet it is found as a minor element in so many minerals that rubidium is 16th in abundance in the earth's crust. Cesium, which ranks as the 37th most abundant element, is the principal component of pollucite and a minor element in a wide variety of minerals.

This report describes a method of concentrating the insoluble organic material (kerogen) in a rich Colorado oil shale without any apparent alteration of its original chemical form. The method involved treating finely pulverized shale with dilute acetic acid at room temperature to remove the carbonates, which act as a cementing agent for the shale, and cause the shale particles to partly disintegrate into the organic and inorganic components. The acid-treated shale then was centrifuged in different liquid mediums ranging from 1.4 to 1.15 gravity to effect a mechanical separation. From a Colorado oil shale containing 48.0 percent ash, kerogen concentrates containing 43.3 to 8.7 percent ash were obtained. The carbon:hydrogen ratios of the kerogen in the original shale and the different concentrates were essentially the same. The oil:kerogen ratios calculated from Fischer assays of the above samples were essentially the same, regardless of the organic or inorganic contents. This was also true of the assay water:kerogen ratios of the same samples. These data indicate that no significant change occurred in the kerogen during the concentration process.

"This paper is the outcome of thorough investigation into the value of the previous methods used for deriving production decline curves. It is highly important that methods be employed that are fundamentally sound and also practicably applicable. Six methods commonly used were studied. Some of these were found to be fundamentally in error; some save reliable curves but involved much work and time in the preparation; others gave reliable curves with less time and effort.It was found that of the methods previously employed the ""family curve"" method described in Bull. 134 Amer. Inst. Feb. 1918, pp. 499-500 by Lewis and Beal, was probably the most satisfactory. The now method given in this paper ploys the same principles as the ""family curve"" method, but is mathematical instead of graphical,The engineer and the oil man should carefully boar in mind both the use and the limitations of the average production curve such as is derived by the ""family curve"" method or other methods mentioned. Estimations of future productions or of underground oil reserves of a particular tract or well should be made from the production records of the tract or the well itself wherever such records are satisfactory. The use of the average curve of a district or field should be applied only to those properties or wells where there are not sufficient data to construct individual or tract production records, or where the productive life so short that a satisfactory individual record can not be obtained."

Combustion energies of barium and strontium were measured by means of the combustion bomb calorimeter. The heats of formation obtained for the oxides were ?H298.15 = -139,060 ± 700 cal/mole of barium oxide (BaO) and ?H298.15 = -144,440 ± 400 cal/mole of strontium oxide (SrO). Tables containing heats and free energies of formation from 298.15° to 2,000° K were prepared.

"The recent discovery and exploitation of petroleum territory have resulted in the enactment of new petroleum laws in most of the South American Republics. The activities in the discovery of these new fields were engendered by the knowledge of the fact that present producing fields must within well defined periods be exhausted. Oil operators were willing to take the initial steps in exploitation in the absence of legislation that applied strictly to petroleum operations. The enactment of modern legislation in many of these Republics encouraging and protect¬ing exploitations may cause tremendous oil activities in these countries, and the results may be comparable with the magnitude of the undertakings and the prestige of the companies now entering this territory.These, oil fields are admirably located for convenient distribution of petroleum by water to all the Nations using oil as fuel for shipping and industrial concerns. The oil markets of the western coast of South America will derive immense benefits from the Panama Canal. This navigation route brings these markets into direct ocean shipment with the Atlantic coasts of the Western and Eastern Hemispheres.One deterrent to oil production in the Republics of South America is the want of inland. transportation facilities, but the recent laws of these Republics without exception provide for acquiring rights of way for pipe lines and other modes of transportation; and doubtless the great interests and. syndicates already operating in these regions will, as production increases, provide ample pipe line transportation sufficient to convey to the coast the oil produced. It way be assumed, from the legal guarantees afforded, and from operating equipment and machinery that are now being concentrated that refineries will be erected at shipping points for the purpose of making these petroleum products accessible to the world."

Analysis of the size consist of broken coal has been extended in recent years beyond the mere representation of the relative quantities of the various sizes present in a given lot of the material. Fundamental characteristics of the coal related to the process of breakage fix the distribution of sizes, and it has been found by Rosin and Rammler4/ that a relatively simple law-governs this property. Benhett5/ has described a graphical method of expressing the relationship, and by its use considerable simplification in the expression of size distribution is possible.

An inusual job in controlling a gas well was executed on No. 1 well, Inland Oil and Refining Co., situated on the Alkali Butte structure, Freemont County, Wyoming. The work was done by the company in cooperation with the . S. Bureau of Minos, and resulted in a fuel saving of $5,000 in one season and of a repair job estimated at $15,000, or a total of $21,000. The woll had an open flow of 6,000,000 cubic feet of gas per day with a rock pressure of 560 pounds per square inch. A string of 6-1/4 inch casing with a toothed shoe was set on the cap rock above the gas sand at 2181 feet. Then the well was shut in, the gas worked out around both the 6-1/4 inch and 6-1/4 inch strings, breaking through the ground surface at several points under the derrick. Casing troubles encountered while drilling made it unsafe to attempt Coving the 6-1/4 inch string. Moreover, it was important from the standpoint of good management to make the gas from this well immediately available for fuel in other operations and, in addition, to save the gas from wasting. An ordinary mudding and cementing job would have necessitated sitting down this well for probably two months out of a very short operating season. For these rousons it was determined to mud the well, if possible, between the 6 and 8 inch strings by pumping mud fluid through the connection from the gas clamps. The gas clamps used wore of ordinary construction with a side outlet, making them equivalent to a Braden-hoad. When the mud fluid was pumped through the gas clamp into the space between the two strings, it began to appear inside the 6-1/4 inch string. It apparently entered the well either around the toothed shoe or through a "line sawed" leak in the string and was blown out of the well as fast as it was pumped in. In order to stop the leaks, about a half a gunny sack of finely chopped bull ropa was fed with the mud between the casings as before. The hemp gathered around the valves of the mud pump to some extent, and it also stuck in the casing-head fittings a few times. An obstruction in the casing- head would be removed by permitting the woll to "blow back" for a few seconds, and one in the pump valves, by removing the valves when necessary. In two days' time sufficient hemp and mud had been pumped into these strings to kill external and internal pressure. The wall was shut in and allowed to stand over night. Spark ignition of combustible-gas mixtures is a relatively old subject of investigation and has been treated both experimentally and analytically by many people. Elements of static and current electricity are almost always present in mining and industrial operations, and the spark can be an extremely efficient source of ignition. Thus the practical interest of such problems as the "intrinsic safety" of electrical apparatus is obvious. Ignition and quenching phenomena are the primary laboratory representatives of combustion phenomena that are dynamically nonsteady, and such nonsteady phenomena playa considerable part both in industrial processes and in safety matters, although they are of less immediate practical interest. Considerable effort has been expended by the Federal Bureau of Mines in investigations of spark ignition.5 6 7 8/ Primarily, this work has established the significance of several of the parameters involved. This report presents a comprehensive tabulation of lifting cost data collected from oil companies in many different fields. These data were collected during the writer's studies of surface equipment and methods of pumping oil wells, in practically all of the important oil fields in the United States and are based on average operating conditions at 57 groups of properties with a total of 4,497 producing wells. Although lifting cost is only a part of the total cost of producing oil, it nevertheless gives a representative cost figure for purposes of comparison.

One of the many difficult problems that confront the present day coal-mine operator is the safeguarding of his employees and property from disasters such as fires, explosions, squeezes, and inundations. Those operators having gaseous or ev en dusty mines have a double responsibility resting upon them in this respect. The introduction of electrical machinery and appera tus in mining operations has been very rapid, and at the present time it is difficult to mention any kind of mining work in which electrical machinery is not used. This extended introduc- tion of electrical equipment has added not a little to the mine operators' safety problem, and it is the desire of the United States Bureau of Mines to aid the mine operator, and the inspection departments having jurisdiction, in solving their electrical safety problems. With this idea in mind, the Bureau has prepared and published schedules setting forth the qualities it considers essential to the safety of various classes of mining equipment, and the conditions under which it will test and give the stamp of its approval to satisfactory designs. Portable electric lamps of the permissible* type are almost universally used in gaseous mines, but the use of permissible electrical machinery has not been so widespread. Until recently the Bureau had issued approvals for only one class. of machinery involving the use of electric motors that is, permissible coal- cutting machines. However, the day is undoubtedly not far distant when the operator, who so desires, will be able to obtain a permissible room hoist, pump, or coal- loading outfit. During the year 1921 the first of a growing list of storage-battery locomotive approvals was granted by the Bureau, and it is with considerable satis- faction that the Bureau how announces the approval of a third class of motor equip- "merit- namely, slectric drills.

The present status of the National Bureau of Standards program is that many magnetic tapes of analog data have been recorded in four major mines. Each mine uses different types of equipment. In addition, some surface measurements of noise have been made at two additional mines. Two types of recordings have been made: (1) broadband measurements for spectral plots and (2) narrowband measurements for amplitude probability density (APD) plots. Only data from one mine (Robena #4) has been processed and was, presented at this workshop. The short-term goals are: (1) finish processing data from the other mines, (2) establish or reduce measurement system uncertainties, (3) put Robella report into final form for distribution, and (4) hold a review to determine what has been done, to distribute and to interpret the preliminary data, and to determine what still needs to be done. Long-term goals are: (1) complete final reports on each of the mine trips, (2) establish techniques for predicting noise in mines already visited and establish uncertainty bounds for these predictions, and (3) establish techniques for predicting noise in mines that have not been visited (but that use similar equipment to those visited) and also establish uncertainty bounds for these predictions. Specific factors or formats to be presented include: (A) For underground broadband measurements: 1. 300 Hz to 100 kHz spectral plots 2. 300 Hz to 384 kHz spectral plots 3. 300 Hz to 192 kHz spectral plots 4. 300 Hz to 6kHz (subject to change to 3 or 12 kHz) spectral plots (B) For surface broadband measurements: 1. 300 Hz to 6 kHz (or 12 kHz) spectral plots 2. 300 Hz to 3 kHz spectral plots (C) For underground narrowband measurements : 1. APD plots at 12 frequencies from 10 kHz to 32 mHz of magnetic field strength 2. R.
