The normal spectral emissivities of liquid Ti, V, Zr, Mo, and Pt were determined at the fusion temperatures in an electron-beam furnace using a water-cooled copper hearth. The normal spectral emissivities were estimated above the melting points by using adjusted two-color temperatures as approximations of the true temperatures for substitution in Wien's equation. Simultaneous brightness temperatures were determined with a micro-optical pyrometer. The true temperature ranges covered were 1,668° to 1,885° C for Ti; 1,919° to 2,013° C for V; 1,855° to 2,367° C for Zr; 2,610° to 2,751° C for Mo, and 1,772° to 1,990° C for Pt. The spectral emissivities for titanium and zirconium decreased with increasing temperature. At an effective wavelength (?) of 658 mµ the emissivity of titanium ranged from 0.51 to 0.45 and zirconium, from 0.47 to 0.41. The emissivities of vanadium (? = 658 mµ) and molybdenum (? = 657 mµ) were constant at 0.41±0.02 and 0.33±0.01, respectively. The spectral emissivity of platinum (? = 658 mµ) was constant at 0.39±0.02 up to 1,900° C; above that temperature anomalous data were obtained. A mass spectrometric study indicated that platinum was reacting with back-streaming silicon vapors from the diffusion pump when the ambient pressure was greater than 2 X 10-5 torr.

The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of high-purity titanium made by two processes. Sodium-reduced metal with 58 Brinell hardness number (B.h.n.) and electrorefined metal with 60 B.h.n. and 70 B.h.n. were used. Titanium of these hardness levels did not work-harden excessively, and beyond 40 percent cold work the hardening effect was not great. Rapid softening occurred when the metal was annealed at temperature between 300° and 600° C. Full annealing, as determined by property and microstructure studies, was accomplished after 30 minutes at 700° C. A recrystallization diagram is presented which is based on determinations of annealed grain size as a function of rolling reduction and annealing time. For reductions of less than 20 percent, exaggerated grain growth occurred during annealing; for reductions greater than 20 percent, the variation in grain size for each annealing temperature was minor.

Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7516, Bibliography of Investment and Operating Costs for Chemical and Petroleum Plants, was published in October 1949 to aid in estimating investment and operating costs of processes for manufacturing synthetic liquid fuels. Development of such processes by the Bureau of Mines was authorized by Public Law 290, 78th Congress. This bibliography included references to and abstracts of publications appearing from. 1930 to September 1948 on all processes in general use in the petroleum refining and chemical industries. Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7705, Supplemental Bibliography on Investment and Operating Costs for Chemical and Petroleum Plants, was prepared to cover the area from September 1948 through June 1952.

This study summarizes and amalgamates much information collected, compiled, and utilized by the Bureau of Mines numerous country specialists and branch chiefs for inclusion in their country and regional reports that comprise the five other volumes of the international studies of the Minerals Yearbook. Because of the plethora of sources used in preparing these regional studies, it is impossible to cite all sources of information used in preparing this summary, but some recognition seems due. Generally speaking, the preparation of this study, and its related detailed studies on countries and areas, would be impossible without the efforts of the personnel of our counterpart agencies throughout the world. Information that they collect, compile, and then publish, either in their own volumes or in publications of central statistical agencies in their countries, are the foundations upon which this work rests. Thus, we must begin by expressing our appreciation to the multitude of persons employed by these agencies for their contributions.

Low-temperature heat capacities and the enthalpy of formation were deter-mined calorimetrically by the Bureau of Mines for CuO?CuS04. The derived standard entropy (S°298.15) was 40.36±0.04 cal/deg-mole, and the enthalpy of formation (?H°f) was -219.l±0.3 kcal/g-mole. A large thermal anomaly was observed in the heat capacity of CuO?CuS04 at 20±0.1 K. Gibbs energy of formation data are tabulated up to 1,200 K. Construction details of a precision low-temperature adiabatic calorimeter capable of determining heat capacities of solids in the temperature range 5 to 320 K are given. A calibrated miniature germanium resistance thermometer was incorporated into the calorimeter to extend the range of accurate measurements below 15 K. High-resistance dc heater windings were used throughout the cryostat to reduce heat conduction of inner connecting wires.

The carbonizing properties of No. 2-bed coal from the Bartoy mine and No. 5- or Miller-bed coal from the Wilkeson-Miller mine, both at Wilkeson, Pierce County, Wash., were determined by the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) method. Tests were made in the 13-inch retort at 500°, 600°, and 700° C. and in the 18¬inch retort at 800°, 900°, and 1,000° C. Fischer low-temperature and United States Steel Corporation high-temperature assays were made and the results compared with those of the BM-AGA tests at corresponding temperatures. Agglutinating and plastic properties were determined, and chemical and petrographic analyses were made. The No. 2 bed is 58.5 to 88.0 inches thick at three points sampled in the Bartoy mine. The coal is 98 percent bright and contains only a trace of fusain. A composite of three mine samples contained 13.8 percent ash. The washed sample, which was used in the tests described herein, contained 11.4 percent ash, 2.2 percent moisture, and 0.6 percent sulfur upon the as-carbonized basis and 68.4 percent fixed carbon upon the dry, mineral-matter-free basis. The heating value was 15,183 B. t.u. per pound upon the moist, mineral-matter-free basis. No. 2 therefore ranks as a high-volatile A coal and is very high in that, rank. The ash softens at 2,910° F. Except for its ash content, which is higher than the limit of 9.0 percent specified by the American Society for Testing Materials, No. 2 coal fulfills the requirements of a coking coal. It also is classed as extremely friable, the friability being 88.0 percent. The agglutinating index (7.6 for the 15 : 1 ratio of silicon carbide to coal) is high, and the plasticity as indicated by the Gieseler test (60 divisions per minute) is low for a high-volatile A coal.

A survey of existing and developing field permeability test methods was conducted in order to identify and specify capable methods to be used in feasibility investigations or performance monitoring for in situ leaching of ore deposits. Geologic settings of leachable deposits are discussed, as well as representative techniques used for the in situ leaching operation. Subsurface investigation techniques including drilling, core recovery, and down-hole inspection methods relevant to field permeability investigations are discussed. Field experience is examined and capable field permeability test methods are identified. Specifications for test borehole preparation, test performance. and methods of analysis are given. The test methods are comparatively rated in a matrix with respect to costs ease of use, and data effectiveness' for a broad range of conditions. Well Pump and Packer test methods receive high ratings. Recommendations are made for needed developments in field permeability test methods and a comprehensive bibliography is given.

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 234 natural gas samples from wells and pipelines in 21 States and 1 foreign country. All of the samples were obtained and analyzed during calendar year 1975 as a part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and n special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4862 and 576.3 The results of the investigation of the occurrences of helium are published annually to make the information available as soon as possible to the gas industry and the public in general. Seventeen previous publications have presented the results of 10,831 gas analyses prior to 1975. This Bureau of Mines study estimates the number of major pieces of coal- mining equipment that will be required to produce 950 million tons of marketable coal in 1980 and 1.2 billion tons in 1985. The coal tonnages were projected in the intermediate coal supply scenario of Project Independence Blueprint (PIB). The equipment projections were determined by consideration of historical trends and by evaluation of information from equipment manufacturers and mining companies. The ability of the manufacturers to meet the projected equipment demands was also determined. It was concluded that equipment supply offers no presently discernible constraint to mining 1.2 billion tons of coal in 1985. A shortfall in projected production for the intervening years, however, is probable owing to anticipated shortages of draglines.

The Bureau of Mines developed a stopping design that allows the stopping to be blown down by strong blast forces without incurring any permanent damage. Trials with the new stopping, dubbed the quick-fix blowout stopping, have been conducted in the Bureau's Safety Research Coal Mine at Bruceton, Pa., and in two New Mexico uranium mines. Results have been favorable in all cases. Compared with conventional brattice stoppings or wood bulkheads, the quick-fix blowout stopping is easier and less time consuming to install, is easier to maintain, and in most cases is just as efficient an air barrier. There is same indication that the shape of the stopping makes it more resistant to blast fore s than the fabric stoppings now in use.

Variations in specific gravity of oil retorted from oil shales of the Eocene Green River Formation in northwestern Colorado were evaluated statistically, demonstrating that these variations are very strongly associated with stratigraphic position and less strongly but still significantly associated with geographic location. Specific gravity of oil retorted from these oil shales apparently varies with the carboxyl group content of the oil shale's organic matter. Higher temperatures accompanying increasing depth of burial probably progressively decarboxylated oil shale's organic matter producing the decrease of oil specific gravity associated with deeper stratigraphic position. The geographically associated oil-gravity variations were probably produced by regional variation in the original thickness of late Cenozoic extrusive rocks once overlying the Green River Formation.

A computer program is presented to calculate the shape factors and volumes of cells from a potentiometric model, using coordinates of the inter-sections of the stream lines and equal potentials and a few additional coordinates. Shape factors are used in flow computations when the geometry is complicated. The program also includes computer instructions to divide the channels into cells of equal volume and to obtain the shape factor for each of these equal volume cells. An illustrated example using the potentiometric model for the waterflood of a seven-spot well-spacing pattern is presented. The information contained in the report is of value not only to those allied to the subject but also to others, because many of the techniques can be conveniently used in formulating other computer programs.

Three long horizontal holes were drilled from a directionally drilled surface hole at the Emerald Mine near Waynesburg, Pa. The purpose was to adapt the technique of directional drilling for use in draining methane from coalbeds. A 504-m (1,652-ft) long, 76-mm (3-in) diameter, circular arc pilot hole was drilled, using a downhole mud motor, to enter the Pittsburgh coalbed at a vertical depth of 305 m (1,000 ft). The hole was reamed to 222 mm (8-3/4 in) and was cased to a measured depth of 486 m (1,595 ft). Three 76-mm (3-in) diameter horizontal drainage holes were then drilled, totaling 2,909 m (9,544 ft) of horizontal hole. Improvements in drilling methods increased the average drilling rate from 20.4 ill (67 ft) to 64.9 m (213 ft) per day. The cost of drilling the directional and horizontal holes (using a Government-owned drill rig) was $1,169,530, a figure inflated by inexperience and by delays caused by lost-circulation problems and fishing operations. An estimated total drilling cost of $960,000 (including rental of a drill rig) for an improved system, was determined by a detailed cost analysis. Initial gas and water production from November 1979 through May 1980 was low because of caving of the horizontal holes drilled in shale near the bottom of the casing.

In support of Bureau of Mines studies of thermal fragmentation of rock, the elastic moduli of four types of rock were measured at temperatures ranging from room temperature up to 1,500° F (1,089° K). The sonic method was employed to determine the resonant frequencies of the rock specimens and from these frequencies, the elastic moduli were calculated. Data for Young's modulus, shear modulus, and Poisson's ratio are given as a function of temperature for Dresser basalt, Reserve taconite, Jasper quartzite, and Charcoal granite. Young's modulus and the shear modulus decreased with increasing temperature up to about 1,200° F and then became relatively insensitive to temperatures from 1,200° to 1,500° F.

"Conservation of slateWaste slate is a problem of outstanding importance in the slate industry, for a very large proportion of all slate quarried is thrown on the waste heap. While many uses for waste slate have been found, the demand calls for merely a fraction of the present supply of unused material. If the slate industry is to increase in prosperity, the producer's energy must be directed toward the development of ways and means of reducing waste to the lowest possible point. The Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior has devoted much study to this problem and a recent bulletin ** contains a detailed discussion of the waste problem.Attention has recently been directed toward an improved method of cutting slate in quarries, a method that promises to reduce greatly the percentage of waste material. The method has been introduced since that bulletin was published, and this supplementary paper covers the details of the process.A reversion in method,In connection with this new mode of operation history is repeating itself in a very interesting way, for the old quarry bar used years ago with steam drills, and later discarded in favor of the channeling machine .and the hammer drill, has been salvaged from the scrap heap, and again put to active use. The occasion for its employment is an attempt to improve quarry methods by the substitution of drilling for channeling or blasting."

"In a previous paper the Bureau of Mines. 3/ presented in condensed tabular form all analyses of Texas crude oils made by the Bureau up to March 193K. This previous report states;The first Al well in Texas was drilled near Oil Springs, Nacogdoches County, in 1863-67. However, the first oil field of major importance in the State was discovered at Corsicana,Navarro County, in 1895. Since that time the petroleum industry try in the State has spread and grown until today petroleum from Texas is an important commodity in world petroleum markets.Since March 1939 samples of Texas crude oils from many new fields, and some older fields not covered in the previous report, nave been analyzed. Those analyses arc reported in the present paper. The annual production by years from 1896 to 1940, inclusive, taken from the figures in the Bureau of Mines Minerals Yearbook, are given in table 1. This report discusses the construction and use of an all-pressure psychrometric chart in which the requirements of simplicity of appearance and absolute accuracy have been waived, to a certain extent, to provide for the rapid determination of psychrometric data and for the rapid solution of air-conditioning problems of major interest to the mining industry. Many mines in which air-conditioning problems are important are situated at elevations far above sea level and embrace great differences in elevation - in excess of 8,000 feet in certain mines - throughout their airflow circuits. Under these conditions, the effects of variations in the pressure of the atmosphere upon the physical properties of the mixture of air and water vapor of which it is composed are considerable and should be taken into account in the solution of problems. The simple types of psychrometric charts in common use, such as the Carrier, Bulkeley, Hill, and Goff (American Society of Heating and Ventilating Engineers Guide), are not generally suitable, in that they are drawn for a single barometric pressure - 29.92 inches mercury.

Instrumented cable bolts developed at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health were used in conjunction with existing ground control to monitor rock mass loads at various field sites (FMC Granger, Getchell, Meikle, SSX, K-2, and Stillwater). Axial and shear loads were determined by strain gauges to levels of instrument accuracy of ±5 N or ±5 microstrain as these loads were transferred to the instrumented cable bolts. These gauges were 12.5 mm long and embedded into are manufactured king wire that replaced the conventional king wire. Cable bolt performance, quality of grout, and installation techniques were also assessed. By using instrumented cables, a mine operator can determine axial load along the cable at predefined gauge locations. By monitoring load on and displacement of the rock mass, more effective ground support can be selected and installed, which will lead to safer working conditions for miners.
