Explosives have been used to demolish many unsafe structures around the world. However, it is unlikely any demolition job has ever involved destroying buildings already buried 40 feet (12 meters) into the world’s largest ice sheet. That is what happened to the original research station at the geographic South Pole, built back in the 1950s, following a series of discrete explosions between 2011 and 2013.

Sublevel caving (SLC) is a mass mining method based upon the utilization of gravity flow of blasted ore and caved waste rock. Production blasting has significant impact on the efficiency and productivity of SLC output, affecting material fragmentation, flow and recovery. Misfires could occur during blasting in SLC, which results in the loss of explosives and poor fragmentation. Usually, the blastholes are top-initiated with redundant lower primers set at + 25 ms as a precaution. If the top primers fail, the lower primers may initiate the explosive, which will induce out-of-sequence delays that can influence fragmentation and gravity flow. This work investigated the impact of misfires and out-ofsequence delays on fragmentation and gravity flow through numerical simulations using a coupled finite element and discrete element method. Different scenarios of misfires and out-of-sequence delays were studied, and the fragment size distribution was obtained to evaluate the blasting performance. The material flow behaviour was investigated to assess the gravity flow process. The results indicated that misfires significantly affect the fragmentation and the gravity flow process while the effects of out-of-sequence delays are not so significant for the investigated cases

This paper and slide presentation is a brief rundown on what is probably the worst natural devastation I have ever witnessed. The epicenter of the quake that so violently shook Mexico City occurred 230 miles away near Mexico's west coast. The first calculation placed the quake at 7.8 on the Richter scale. This was later upgraded to 8.1. Each unit increase on the Richter scale indicates about a 30 fold increase in energy released. The quake was felt in much of Mexico and south Texas and damage occurred in many other Mexican cities. On the morning of September 19, 1985, at 7:18 A.M., the ground went into motion and shook for approximately 2 to 4 minutes. During this period most of the devastation occurred. At 7:38 P.M. the following day, the second quake hit and more buildings fell from this 7.5 quake. The ground in Mexico City moves like jello since it is a dry lake bed 7,350 feet above sea level.\

Most studies of crack response have focused on opening and closing of a crack in the plane of the wall in which the crack occurs. Crack movement also occurs perpendicular or normal to the plane of the wall. This paper will examine and compare the in-plane and out-of-plane (normal) response of cracks in two different residences near limestone quarries. In two locations, sensors that measure in-plane and normal displacement were installed side-by-side on the same crack, allowing direct comparison of the two modes of response. In a third location, a perpendicular pair of displacement sensors was installed in a corner of a room to observe the bidirectional response of the structure at a corner. Both long-term and dynamic data were recorded with the same sensors; temperature, humidity, and air over pressures were also recorded to compare blast and weather effects. Measurements show that ratios of out of plane to in plane response to dynamic events can vary. However, the ratios of out of plane (normal) response to vibratory events to that of climatological change is still as small as the ratio for in plane crack responses.

Vibrograms, which last significantly longer than the actual blast (say 10 to 15 cycles or more), may be signalling an elastic response, which is not uniquely blast related. For example, geophones mounted on a part of a structure, which can elastically resonate at a frequency included in the seismogram, may not show the structure’s real reaction to the blast. This resonance usually amplifies the ground vibration. This contribution examines one particular case where blasting excited and amplified a resonant ground response, and the method used to significantly reduce or eliminate this undesirable condition.

Torpedoing Wells. – On the completion of the drilling, or when the production is found to decrease, it is usual to “torpedo” the well to increase the flow. This process was patented in 1862 by Colonel Roberts, who believed, with many others, that the oil was contained in crevices in the rock, which might not have been tapped by the bore-hole. He therefore proposed the use of nitroglycerine, gunpowder, or other explosive, to break up the rock at the bottom of the well, so that these rich “pockets” might be brought into communication with the well.

This work quantifies seismic coupling as a function of charge weight for single-fired (simultaneously detonated) explosions observed in the mine and at regional distances. These single-fired explosions are contrasted to standard production shots from the same mine. Production shots include cast blasts to remove overburden and coal shots for fragmentation. The blasts were conducted in a mine in NE Wyoming. The data sets consist of measurements in the mine (100-10,000 m) and at regional distance (360 km) using a seismic array near Pinedale, Wyoming (PDAR). The single-fired explosions ranged in designed size from 5,500 to 50,000 lbs. Peak amplitudes measured at a single element of the regional array are modeled by a power law relation dependent on explosive weight. Scaling constants were determined for each of the dominant regional phases: b(Pn) = 0.84±0.14; b(Pg) = 0.84±0.09; b(Lg) = 0.91±.08. Spectral ratios of observations from different explosions observed at the same station illustrate the frequency dependnce of the source scaling relations. Spectral ratios of in-mine observations are consistent with those of regional data. The observed single-fired ratios are well replicated by Mueller-Murphy source model ratios. The data and model illustrate both the increase in long-period spectral level and the accompanying decrease in source corner frequency with increasing charge weight. The coal and cast blasts that make up the production shots ranged in size from 77,000 to 4,738,230 lbs. The peak amplitude (1-20 Hz) for the largest delay-fired production shot (4,738,230 lbs.) is comparable to that of the largest single-fired explosion (50,000 lbs.). This comparison can be explained in terms of destructive interference between waveforms from individual boreholes introduced by delay firing. Shot specific models of delay firing suggest that peak amplitudes in this same frequency band for the production shots are insensitive to the total amount of explosives in the blast. Peak amplitude data at regional distances supports his modeling result.

"A review, update, and expansion of Thiokol’s presentation at BAl’s Fiih High Tech Seminar titled ‘ADetonator - An Era of Precision in All-Electronic Detonators” is provided herein (and should be considered as a supplement to that publication). Thiokol is currently in the development and field evaluation phase of activities for our ACCUBLASTTM all-electronic detonator. The ACCUBLASTTM detonator uses a semiconductor bridge (an electronic match) in place of a conventional hot wire to initiate a safer, less sensitive material, titanium subhydride potassium perchlorate. The device is programmable to provide blast delays in one millisecond increments ranging from 1 to 500 milliseconds. The ACCUBLASTTM detonator combines an all-electronic programmable timer coupled with a semiconductor bridge to ensure detonation timing accuracy with +I00 microsecond precision. Initial development and field testing have been completed. These tests have verified ACCUBLASTTM detonators’ precision."

The ability to predict the damage inflicted by these events is highly sought after; in order to predict damage, the behavior of blast waves within these environments must be quantified and understood. Urban constructs such as buildings and roadway intersections affect the natural propagation of a blast wave, intensifying or rarefying the wave depending on their arrangement.

Electronic detonators represent a significant departure from traditional initiation systems offering precise timing capabilities and improved reliability and safety. The early development of electronic detonators can be traced back to the late 20th century with the introduction of basic electronic initiation systems. These early iterations provided a glimpse into the potential for greater control and accuracy in blasting operations. As technology progressed, electronic detonators underwent significant refinement incorporating advanced features such as programmable delay times, multiple firing sequences, expanded blast size and enhanced communication capabilities. These advancements revolutionized the way explosives are deployed in mining and demolition applications enabling engineers to tailor blasts to specific geological or environmental conditions and structural requirements. The mining and oil industries employ techniques such as geologic mapping, core drilling and electromagnetic field techniques to explore for new deposits. New discoveries of major near-surface ore bodies are becoming progressively rare and traditional exploration methods are unable to resolve ore bodies deeper than about 500 m (1640.4 ft). Consequently high-resolution seismic reflection techniques show great potential for exploration to much greater depths down to almost 3 km (1.9 mi).

During the reconstruction of the motorway Zagreb-Krapina three reinforced concrete bridges were demolished, for their width was not adequate for the new motorway. Demolition of the three bridges was carried out by blasting as duration of the traffic cut on the motorway and the railway was limited to maximally 4 hours. During that period of time the demolished bridges had to be removed. Therefore, very tiny granulation was requested suitable for loading and not endangering the surrounding structures. Before each of three main blasting, trial blasting were carried out including the seismic measurements registering the seismic effects. The nearest residential building was at the distance of less than 30 m from the place of blasting. Additional difficulty was the fact that by each of the three bridges there is a new bridge, with minimal distance between the old and the new bridge being 30 cm. As each of the bridges is of different construction and of various thickness, particular blasting technique has been prepared for each one of the bridges.

In the early 1980's, the Homestake Mine converted from labor intensive methods such as open cut-and-fill mining to Vertical Crater Retreat (\/CR) bulk mining and mechanized cut and fill. This transformation occurred as a result of high costs and low productivity associated with open cut-and-fill mining. Use of Vertical Crater Retreat allowed Homestake to contain waste development rock within the mine to further decrease costs since the voids created from VCR stopes provide a good receptacle. The need to access these voids from surrounding development to facilitate waste dumping precipitated the development of drop raising. This system is cheaper than raise boring because it allows drilling into the top of an open stope without the expense of raise boring cutouts or equipment. It's safer than conventional raising since access from the bottom is not required. Two methods of long hole raising or "drop" raising have been successfully developed at the Homestake Mine and can be categorized as Ring Drill Drop Raising using 2-1/4 inch holes and VCR Drop Raising using 6-1/2 inch holes.

Electronic detonators offer several distinctive features over electric and non-el (shock tube) detonators including better timing accuracy resulting in excellent fragmentation and vibration control, field programmability and digital safety means. Several electronic detonator systems are available commercially today serving the surface, underground and seismic needs.
