"A dynamic, interactive map has been developed of the life cycle of a number of metals, from mining through to minerals processing, metal production, product manufacturing, recovery and waste management. Whilst the existing metal process network and waste management infrastructure provide substantial scope for (product) design, these also limit change because of the strong path dependency of industry and infrastructure development. The metal production network is complex, as it consists of an interconnected and integrated system that incorporates multiple production routes for a spectrum of metals. More often than not, the production or recovery of a single metal is related to or dependent on the generation or recovery of another. The effects of these other metals is of great importance. In order to realize the potential economic importance of impurities, research and development have integrated the processes of copper production with those of lead and zinc, and connected the processes to those of among others silver, bismuth, tin and platinum group metals (PGMs), for example. The recovery of these elements from the interconnected circuits is extremely complex, as most of the elements must be circulated between two or more circuits before they are concentrated enough to make their extraction possible, and their recovery as a compound profitable.From such a system’s perspective, it can easily be seen that a complication for solid waste management has arisen through the development of products (consumer goods) that bring together metals that are not linked in natural resources. As a consequence, many of these materials are not compatible with any process in the metals production network that was developed for the processing of primary, natural resources, optimized for the processing not only of the primary metal but also for all mineralogically associated minor valuable and harmful elements. The formation of large or complex residue streams or undesired harmful emissions then inhibits processing and recovery of said products at their end-of-life. Another complication is that any change to the system (in metal production, SWM or product design) affects the system configuration. Due to the changing demands for metals as a result from the changing products made from the metals for example, the relationships between the processes in the interconnected metal production systems change. This affects both the demand for old scrap (required amount and grade) from waste management, and the environmental profile of the metals. Preferably, therefore, product designers, waste processors and metal producers must cooperate to realize optimal metal recovery in processing discarded consumer products."

"Aqueous dispersions of air specifically prepared on the basis of flotation reagent solution acquire active properties in relation to the solid surface and may be imply as a medium for flotation ores. Such aerated solutions were defined as Activated Aqueous Dispersions of Air (AADA) with 5-6:1 ratio and the procedure of mineral separation was defined as a flotation process under non-equilibrium conditions. These procedures differ from conventional flotation mainly in reagent interaction with minerals through their adsorption films on gas bubbles simultaneously forming flotation complexes. Gas-liquid mixture is kept till an adsorption layer of reagents close to the limit value is formed on the surface of bubbles. The theoretical basis of AADA is considered.The results of two-phase gas- liquid mixture (AADA) were studied. Two versions of AADA were considered. Electrical surface potential of the air bubbles with the surfactant film, untreated minerals particles in Coulomb attraction and flotation complex formation were analyzed. Special flotation machines were constructed for separation of mineral suspension in air dispersion, whose effectiveness was confirmed in flotation of apatite waste of Kovdor ore. FK-9 machine introduced on Kovdor iron ore combine for the recovery of apatite from current departures of factory. The froth product contained 7.2 % P2O5, with recovery of 44 % apatite, which was processed for getting melted phosphoric-magnesium fertilizers."

"The surface-chemical property of nickel slag fiber was modified in aqueous media in order to act as an active and efficient collector of colloidal amorphous silica from geothermal effluent. Colloidal amorphous silica (0.05 µm) from geothermal wastewater causes operational and ecological problems. It clogs geothermal pipes and waterways, and when disposed to the environment poses hazardous effects on both the flora and fauna ecology. Because colloidal amorphous silica is extremely fine and remains in suspension in aqueous media, conventional solid/liquid processes to remove colloidal silica from its bulk liquid are rendered ineffective.A rapid separation technique is then developed to remove effectively amorphous colloidal silica from its bulk liquid by attaching the extremely fine particles of silica onto a nickel slag fiber coated with magnesium hydroxide, Mg(OH)2. The nickel slag fiber has the following characteristics: a high surface area and predominantly possesses negative charge in aqueous media with an iso-electric point at pH ~2.5. When soaked and saturated with Mg(OH)2 solution, the surface of the nickel slag fiber becomes coated with fine and compacted Mg(OH)2 precipitates. This modifies the surface- chemical property of nickel slag fiber transforming the negatively charged surface into a positively charged surface in aqueous media with an iso-electric point of around pH 11.8, which corresponds to the iso-electric point of Mg(OH)2. When geothermal effluent containing negatively charged colloidal amorphous silica particles (i.e.p. of silica is pH 2) is passed through a column-bed packed with surface-chemically modified nickel slag fibers under natural pH conditions, the colloidal amorphous silica particles are recovered by attachment onto the surface of the surface- modified nickel slag fiber. The recovery of colloidal amorphous silica by attachment is 97-99%, resulting in the production of a relatively clean and silica free output. Aluminum hydroxide, Al(OH)3, was also used to modify the surface –chemical property of the nickel slag fiber. In the same way, it also exhibited a positive response with the collection of colloidal amorphous silica from its bulk liquid, but yielding a lower recovery of 90%. This may be attributed to the lower surface potential and iso-electric point of pH 9.3 for Al(OH)3. The separation process was evaluated and analysed using existing potential energy theories. Figure 1 shows a micrograph of the surface of an unmodified and the Al(OH)3 –modified surface of nickel slag fiber."

"The apatite staffelite ores (ASO) of Kovdor deposit are dominated by fine-grained aggregates containing both phosphate minerals and silicates — vermiculite, smectites, zeolites. These minerals exhibit ion-exchange properties. In this connection, the magnitude of cation exchange, along with the content of P2O5 and CO2, is an important property of apatite staffelite ore, which largely determines the performance of concentration processes. In the examined ASO samples, the magnitude of cation exchange measured in terms of Ca2+ is 2546-4790 g/ton. The conducted laboratory studies of apatite staffelite ores with various mineral composition showed that adding calcined soda improves the recovery of P2O5 into the flotation concentrate. Full-scale tests were conducted at the apatite staffelite ore processing plant at Kovdor Mining and Concentration Operation and demonstrated the high performance of the proposed agent treatment. The test results showed that in the flotation of apatite staffelite ores, the optimum calcined soda feed rates range from 3,500 to 5,000 g/ton of the flotation feed. With close flotation feed and concentrate grade parameters, the P2O5 recovery gain is 17%. The effect of adding soda is associated with the desorption of the hardness cations from the minerals, precipitation in the pulp and, accordingly, improvement in the ionic composition of the liquid phase of the flotation feed due to a reduced content of calcium ions. Based on the test results, the proposed agent treatment with an elevated feed rate of calcined soda was implemented at Kovdor Mining and Concentration Operation in the flotation of apatite staffelite ore. The apatite staffelite ores (ASO) of Kovdor deposit are dominated by fine-grained aggregates containing both phosphate minerals and silicates — vermiculite, smectites, zeolites. These minerals exhibit ion-exchange properties. These minerals have certain properties requiring a more detailed examination for a better understanding of the flotation properties of apatite staffelite ores."

The significant capital and operating expenditure of size reduction operations have maintained comminution on the spotlight of mineral processing research during the last century and, more recently, the concerns about the impact of these operations on the sustainability of the minerals industry, will remain to do so in the 21st century. One of the most popular approaches that have been used to deal with these challenges is the application of simulation both to reduce the uncertainty in the design and improve the operation of size reduction operations. From the initially purely empirical approaches, including the energy size reduction ?laws? and the phenomenological approaches, of which the traditional population balance model is, arguably, the best example, comminution modeling now reached a point in which more fundamental and mechanistic models are sought. The paper analyzes some of the advances that now make multiscale modeling of comminution processes realizable. On the microscale, greater understanding of the phenomena involved in fracture and fragmentation of single particles under different stressing conditions now exists. Particle breakage testing methods are currently used in a routine basis by industry and good quantitative descriptions of different breakage mechanisms are now available, although research is still required to develop appropriate models for a couple of them. On the macroscale phenomena, the discrete element method (DEM) has been successfully used not only to provide insights but also quantitative information on the transfer of mechanical energy from the machine to the grinding media in mills and to particles in crushers, while smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to describe fluid flow. The paper also analyzes the importance of modeling mesoscale phenomena in size reduction, which is the interaction of particles forming assemblies or beds of particles, demonstrating some of the areas requiring further attention. Examples of application of the multiscale modeling approach to the inadvertent comminution of ore lumps during handling, to the comminution in vertical impact crushers and tumbling mills are demonstrated. "Jet diffuser flotation column (JDFC) is a flotation device resembles Jameson flotation cell (JFC) in terms of operational principles, but it has significant difference structural points of view. This difference is an essential change in the downcomer to provide an increase of performance of the cell for the coarse particles. By using the hydrodynamic and fluid mechanics principles (Sahbaz et al., 2013) downcomer was changed as a diffuser, therefore turbulence at the end of the downcomer was reduced to provide better aggregate stability and homogeneous dissipation of the bubbles in the separation tank. According to experimental results carried out in pilot scale JDFC, not only higher flotation performance comparing with Jameson cell was obtained specifically for coarse talc particles in a certain condition, but also quiescent froth layer was acquired. In these tests, vertical pipe of JDFC having inlet diameter of 6 cm and outlet diameter of 11.5 cm was used with separation tank having the diameter of 39 cm. By using the data, pilot scale JDFC having 410 cm vertical pipe integrated with separation tank was produced and flotation tests were carried out by using the naturally hydrophobic mineral (talc). Finally, the talc recovery obtained as 94% by the use of JDFC, while Jameson cell has the recovery of 77% for the particle size of 250 µm."

"The long-term studies on development of the technology for precious metals recovery using activated carbons executed by Irkutsk Research Institute of Precious and Rare Metals and Diamonds (IRGIREDMET) were finished by successful introduction of ""Carbon-In-Pulp"" process in Russia (1984).The review of some studies, accompanied by development, testing, introduction and subsequent improvement of considered technology, carried out by IRGIREDMET is submitted in this paper.The basic regularities of gold and silver adsorption onto activated carbons from cyanide, thiourea, chloride and other solutions are investigated using various phisical-and-chemical methods ( X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Voltammetry, X-ray microanalysis etc.). Using voltammetry it was found that gold cyanide is adsorbed onto activated carbon without chemical changes and partial reduction of gold is possible only during drying of carbon samples before analysis. Metallic gold and silver may be dissolved in boiling cyanide solution at argon atmosphere when they are in contact with activated carbon surface. Gold adsorption mechanism for activated carbons has great differences from that for the ion exchange resins. So the most probable mechanism for gold adsorption from cyanide solution is adsorption of neutral molecules Me n+[Au(CN)2-]n.X-ray quantitative microanalysis technique was developed to investigate gold adsorption kinetics onto spherical activated carbon. Gold profiles in granules of activated carbon for various adsorption conditions were tested (carbon particle size, mixing efficiency, adsorption time etc.). Mathematical methods were used to determine gold diffusion coefficient within activated carbon granule.The properties of various types domestic and foreign activated carbons were tested and the demands to activated carbons suitable for gold extraction were determined. As a result foreign and Russian activated carbons AG-90, AG-95 were recommended for use at Russian gold plants. Domestic adsorbents are cheaper in comparison with foreign activated carbons. The methods to restore carbon adsorption activity including acid treatment and thermal reactivation were tested and implemented."

"Airlift reactors are used in a wide range of industries, such as hydrometallurgy, biochemical processes, chemical process industry and waste water treatment. With increasing superficial gas velocity three circulation regimes can be defined: no gas bubbles in the downcomer, gas bubbles remain stationary in the downcomer and gas bubbles in the circulating regime. In this paper a numerical modelling method was presented for gas-liquid flow in airlift reactors under different bubble recirculation regimes. Gas-liquid flow was modelled using the Eulerian two-fluid equations, and extra user defined subroutines were incorporated to consider the complex physics, such as bubble induced turbulence and turbulent dispersion force. Some alternative correlations of drag coefficient were used to capture the bubble distributions in the riser and downcomer of the airlift reactor, with consideration of the interaction between bubbles. As using constant bubble size is hard to describe global characteristics of the flow in airlift reactors for three circulation regimes, a model including multiple bubble sizes was presented to get more accurate simulation results of gas holdup and water velocity. Also, the inhomogeneous MUSIG model was used, as an exploration, to compute the complex flow regimes. The MUSIG model is a population balance method to predict the bubble sizes, taking break-up and coalescence into account. The modelling method was applied to a laboratory internal loop airlift reactor, and the simulation results were compared with the experimental measurements of Simcik et al. (2011) for gas holdup and water velocity. The three bubble circulation regimes were observed from simulation figures. Reasonable agreement was obtained over a range of operating conditions, and an improvement was demonstrated using the proposed methods."

"In most underground mining processes the entire extracted ore is transported from underground workings to surface processing plants for separation of valuable minerals and gangue material. Most of the transported material consists of barren rock with negligible metal content, especially for low grade deposits, such as in the copper or gold metal ore mining. Increasing mining depths result in higher costs for transportation and hoisting. Therefore, rejecting waste rock as soon as possible from the material stream gains importance. The concept of resource to product integration in the form of earliest waste rejection in combination with subsequent backfilling follows the philosophy of ‚leaving waste underground?. Implementing mineral processing underground can lead to less required mass movement to surface, hence reducing transportation and hoisting costs. At the same time, rejected waste can be used as backfill to increase extraction rates by reducing pillar volumes. In the mill, a stable high grade feed leads to decreased specific operating and investment costs as well as increased productivity and recovery. These effects as a whole have a large potential to reduce cut-off grades so that resources can be turned into reserves. Within the I²Mine (Innovative Technologies and Concepts for the Intelligent Deep Mine of the Future) project of the European FP7, investigations are carried out by the Unit of Mineral Processing of RWTH Aachen University, the Institute of Mining Engineering I and TOMRA Sorting Solutions | Mining. One aim of the cooperation is to develop new concepts for a comprehensive integration of near-to-face processing in combination with backfill into the overall underground mining process. Effects on up-, down- and side-streams are investigated to prove the potential of resource to product integration in comparison to common underground mining systems and processing methods."

"Frothers offered by different manufacturers are marketed with some information on their chemical and physical properties (e.g. density, viscosity, color, water-solubility, safety/toxicity, etc.). But frothers are used in flotation to generate fine bubbles and to stabilize the forth, and this information is only provided in a very qualitative description of the visual appearance of bubbles and froths. The terms “powerful” and “selective”, which have been commonly used to characterize frothers, have intuitive rather than scientific meaning.This paper introduces the DFI (Dynamic Foamability Index) plotted vs. CCC (Critical Coalescence Concentration) diagrams to classify flotation frothers (Fig. 1). The frothers characterized by low CCC and high DFI values have properties of strong flotation frothers, while those with high CCC and low DFI values are more selective. The proposed frother classification system, based on simple CCC and DFI measurements, provides, for the first time, a solid ground-work for characterization of the flotation frothers."

"The effect of operational conditions, such as air flow rate, impeller speed and solid concentration, as well as the effect of solids concentration and frother dosage, on the bubble size distribution produced in a lab scale flotation cell, were investigated. The cell was operated under batch conditions. The measurement of bubble size was accomplished using an automated photographic technique. The technique enabled fine and coarse bubble distributions to be measured in two-phase (liquid-gas) and three-phase systems (solid-liquid-gas). In each experiment, around ten thousand bubbles were characterized.This paper discusses the main results obtained using the new photographic technique and compares these with previous findings available in the literature. The results indicate that photographic techniques combined with digital imaging processing might become a standard technique for measuring bubble size distribution in flotation machines.HUT BUBBLE SIZE ANALYSERThe importance of having precise and reliable equipment for measuring bubble size distribution in industrial flotation machines has been widely recognized. The measurement of bubble size, particularly in three-phase systems, is rather complex due to the opaque nature of the pulp. However photographic techniques combined with ingenious sampling techniques are utilized for overcoming this difficulty. The technique named HUT, combines previously developed visualization methods with digital image processing procedures. In this technique bubbles and aggregates are exposed to a monochrome progressive scan camera. The acquired images are directly stored in a computer connected to the camera for post-processing. The sampling apparatus consists essentially of a vertical tube for collecting bubbles, a viewing chamber and a collection chamber, where particles carried by the bubbles are released. The function of the collection chamber is to maintain the viewing chamber clear for imaging purposes. Each image is automatically processed off-line, using digital image tools. In this paper the advantages and limitations of this new technique are described."

"This paper is concerned with the drainage behaviour of gangue mineral in the froth phase. Experiments were carried out in a continuous laboratory flotation cell in which froth depth and bubble size can be changed independently. The fraction of solids returning from the froth to the pulp zone was expressed using a rate constant by considering the appropriate froth regimes. A mixture of hydrophilic solids (silica) and floatable particles (glass ballotini) was used as a flotation feed. Samples of glass ballotini of different hydrophobicities were obtained, using controlled silanation. Three samples, with contact angles of 50, 66, 82 degrees, were used. The effect of the initial bubble size (pulp bubble size), concentration of gangue mineral in the froth zone, and froth depth on the drainage of silica, were also investigated.Typical results obtained from this study is shown in the figure given below. In this figure drainage rate constant for the entrained solids in the presence of particles of the three hydrophobicities is plotted against froth height. As observed, the drainage rate of the entrained solids increases considerably with an increase in the degree of hydrophobicity. Concerning the effect of pulp bubble size on the drainage rate of entrained solids, larger bubbles always give higher drainage rates due to formation of relatively loose froth structures which allows gangue particles to easily move down to the pulp zone. Conversely, smaller bubbles exhibit lower drainage rate constants, in particular at shallow froth depths."

"In 1992, Ingeniería de Minerales started with the introduction of pneumatic flotation technology in Chile and South America. This technology consists of vertical cells and gyratory cells, used mainly under actual operational conditions, with pilot units directly installed in the concentrator circuits of the industrial process. Successful industrial applications have been observed at Los Pelambres, in the molybdenum plant; at Codelco Andina in the molybdenum plant as pre-rougher to produce directly a final concentrate; in the copper circuit at Las Luces as pre-rougher producing final concentrate using sea water; at Minera Valle Aconcagua where a full automatic plant produces pre-concentrate from fresh tailings as feed; at the silica and silicate reverse flotation circuit of Compañía Minera del Pacífico; in cleaning the final concentrate of Zn by reverse flotation removing ultrafine carbonate; and in a plant that reprocesses fresh tailings from a copper slag flotation process. Positive operational changes in the design of the flotation circuit have been seen in plants using G-cells and V-cells, improving the performance of flotation circuits and the quality of final products. The high concentration of bubbles and micro turbulence produced by the pneumatic aeration units provide a high probability of collision and attachment, reducing dramatically the residence time. Though it is a pneumatic flotation, no compressed air is needed, and the equipment is characterized by low maintenance costs, full automation, savings in investment and energy."

The results of mineralogical?technological studies of PGM mineralization in zoned mafic?ultramafic complexes of the Ural?Alaskan type are given. The most important technological specificity of PGM mineralization hosted in dunites is its occurrence only in the form of free mineral species with predominance of Fe?Pt alloys (ferrous platinum, isoferroplatinum, and tetraferroplatinum). Technological properties, grain size, and good opening of PGM ore in grain size class +80 µm make it possible to concentrate ore using gravity methods with stadial comminution and between cycle separation of relatively large grains and nuggets into high-grade concentrates at the early stage of disintegration. The air dense medium fluidized bed separator which has been developed for the dry beneficiation of coal is recognized as a low cost and high efficiency process. The success of this separator for beneficiating any specific coal, alone or in combination with other processing methods, mostly depends on the characteristics of run-of-mine coal. Therefore, a thorough knowledge of the mineralogical composition and washability characteristics of representative coal sample is highly essential for correctly and effectively assess the suitability of this process. Available literature conforms that although the characteristics of Indian non-coking coals are well known, the correlations between the particle compositions with its density are entirely lacking. In the present study the washability, proximate, ultimate and elemental analysis was conducted for four typical Indian high-ash non-coking coals and their elemental compositions were well correlated with the specific gravity of coal. The results obtained in this study provide some essential information to the coal-processing engineer for efficiently operate and control the process. Furthermore, the beneficiation potential of air dense medium fluidized bed was experimentally evaluated and compared with the results obtained from an operating wet beneficiation plant. Based on this comparative study the air dense medium fluidized bed is established to be a possible alternative to the conventional wet beneficiation method for beneficiating Indian coals with Ep values in the range of 0.03 to 0.06

"Gold solubilised during cyanidation can be recovered by precipitation (Merrill-Crow process) or by adsorption onto activated carbon, these being the techniques applied in industrial plants.Precious metals (Au, Ag) adsorbed onto activated carbon are extracted during a subsequent stage in aqueous phase, by various technologies, such as hot elution (70-80°C) or under pression desorption (100-130°), with hydro-alcoholic solutions.This stage is of great interest from an economic point of view, due to the high energy costs. Temperature represents the critical kinetic factor.The aim of this paper was to study the influence of different water/organic solvent mixtures (isopropyl alcohol, ethanol and ethylene glycol) on the desorption process.The experimental work was carried out on laboratory scale, using activated coconut carbon with different temperatures and extraction times, without adding cyanide.Best results have been obtained in this order: isopropyl alcohol > ethylene glycol > ethanol. Starting from gold concentration of about 5 g Au per kg of carbon, best kinetics resulted in 97-100% of gold extraction, after 8 hours of desorption, at a temperature of 80ºC."

"The modelling of bath type furnaces tends to be either fundamental in nature or total empirical ""black box models"". While models of the first kind are robust, they tend to lack accuracy, in cases where they are to be used for process control, and may take an overly long in development time. On the other hand, black box models tend to lack robustness of prediction for all circumstances and tend to be limited to interpolate based on historical data. While this may very often provide short-term accuracy, the models may have problems with stability in the long term. Moreover, the model structure may not reflect any of the fundamental properties of the system and remains opaque to fundamental analysis. The aim of the model development is in obtaining a model that have robustness, high accuracy, a short development time and which is adaptive to a changing environment. The models are specifically developed for on-line decision support or control of furnaces. The modelling approach is evaluated for a chromite bath smelting furnace. The role of systems analysis, mass balance smoothing, thermodynamic analysis are integrated into one generic algorithm for bath type furnaces. Not only are fundamental process relationships such the mass and energy balances satisfied through a scientific method of data reconciliation; the proposed modelling approach allows adaptive prediction, the first step towards predictive control or metallurgical decision support.It is shown that neither an ARMAX model only, nor a purely equilibrium model only, could predict the dynamics of the process very well. However, a combination of the two approaches more than doubled the accuracy as measured by the R2. It was noted for carbon dissolved in the alloy, that the improvement in R2 in using a hybrid modelling approach was more than the sum of the R2 of the individual traditional approaches. Similar improvements in modelling performance were noted for all other species.It shows further that process dynamics may totally overshadow the effect of thermochemical equilibrium (even when the thermochemical equilibrium prediction includes the recycled alloy and slag heels as additional feeds). The exclusion of process dynamics therefore leads to erroneous results."

"In disintegrating solid ores with mineral values disseminated in them, one of the principal tasks is to selectively separate valuable mineral particles from the matrix in which they reside, striving at the same time to keep their natural shape and size as intact as possible.The conventional mechanical disintegration methods do not meet this most important requirement in full. The other major objective here is to reduce electric power consumption during the fragmentation stage, since up to 65 per cent of the total power consumption at concentrators processing ores of non-ferrous, ferrous, rare, and precious metals is spent on disintegration steps.Numerous experiments conducted on dozens of ore types (tin, tungsten, and many others, as well as on rock containing diamonds, rubies, emeralds, etc.) have invariably demonstrated by far superior integrity of mineral values as compared with that obtained by mechanical as well as other types of disintegration.However, the process remains as power-intensive as ever which is due to the imperfect nature of the electro-technical devices that convert the network electric current into high-voltage electric impulses responsible for the disintegration process.The maximum capacity attained in disintegrating the hardest materials from 40 mm to 2 mm size in a single operating chamber with four high-voltage electrodes does not exceed 1.0-1.5 t/h. Attempts at increasing the number of electrodes and the capacity of the operating chamber have failed so far because of high overall dimensions and mass of the electrical part of the installation supplying the chamber with pulsating current, as well as of the commutation requirements. At the same time, a number of overseas operations have reported a significant breakthrough in their attempts to reduce dozens of times the overall dimensions and mass of the discharge impulse generating installation (EIS), which enables us to contemplate to increase the capacity of the EIS at least ten times in the nearest future. Yet, even with the currently achieved capacity of the EIS, these installations have found wide use in geological surveying, precious and semi-precious stones production, in grinding super hard materials, etc., since they provide spectacular selectivity of disintegration and thus the integrity of valuable mineral crystals."

"INTRODUCTIONThis paper describes the inseparable relation between product design, liberation, and metallurgical recovery in the optimisation of the recycling of passenger vehicles. This is illustrated by the use of an optimisation model that uses among others a material combination matrix based on metallurgical process data, which depicts the consequences of the quality of intermediate recycling products on the metallurgical material recovery and final alloy metal quality. Various simulations will illustrate the effect of changes in product design and hence liberation on the recycling of end-of-life vehicles. Although this paper focuses on cars, the discussion is equally valid for any end-of-life product. Calibration of the model will be discussed with reference to experiments carried out in order to study the optimal recovery of aluminium applications used in passenger vehicles.OPTIMISATION MODEL FOR LINKING DESIGN TO RECYCLINGImproving the efficiency of the material cycle of the car is essential to ensure a sustainable development of our society as well as e.g. to comply with the recycling targets imposed by EU legislation. In the design of the car various materials are combined and connected in many different ways, making up the complex 'mineralogy' of the car and its components, which is changing rapidly and continuously over time. The liberation of materials during shredding plays an important role in the composition (and quality) of the intermediate recycling streams. In order to include the influence of product design (mineralogy), liberation, and particle composition (quality of the intermediate recycling streams) in the optimisation of the recycling of end-of-life vehicles, a systems engineering tool for optimisation of the recycling of end-of-life vehicles was developed, including a liberation model. The optimisation model predicts the recovery rate as a function of product design (in this case a car), liberation, efficiency of the different process steps, economy and legislation based on a developed recycling flow sheet for end-of-life vehicles. Optimisation can only be achieved through the combination of the knowledge areas of product design, shredding, mechanical separation technology linked to pyro- and hydrometallurgy, composing a complex interconnected network of unit operations."

"With the gradual depletion of the high-grade ores and finer dissemination of values in the leaner samples, it has become imperative to develop innovative approaches to process such complex ores. The beneficiation of complex sulphide ores containing copper, lead and zinc minerals, remains one of the most important challenges in base metals metallurgy. The advent of biotechnology in mineral processing has opened up immense possibilities to exploit such difficult-to-treat ores. Bioprocessing techniques thus hold promise as potential substitutes for the conventional technologies in vogue. Several types of autotrophic and heterotrophic bacteria, fungi, algae and yeasts are implicated in mineral beneficiation processes. Adopting a bioprocessing route to mineral beneficiation has attractive benefits, such as lower cost and energy requirements, environmental acceptability and operational flexibility.The interaction of sphalerite- and galena-adapted Bacillus polymyxa (B. polymyxa) cells with sphalerite and galena has been investigated through adsorption, electrokinetic and flotation studies. The amount of sphalerite-adapted cells adsorbed onto sphalerite and galena is found to decrease with increase in pH. On the other hand, the adsorption density of galena-adapted cells onto galena shows a feeble maximum around pH 8, and the amount adsorbed is marginally higher in the pH range of 8 – 11.5. In the case of sphalerite the amount adsorbed is higher in the pH range of 5 to 7. The adsorption density of both the adapted cells is higher for galena vis-à-vis sphalerite. Electrokinetic studies indicate significant surface chemical changes on the chosen sulphide minerals and the bacterial cells, consequent to microbemineral interactions. Selective flotation tests on a synthetic mixture of galena and sphalerite confirm that sphalerite could be preferentially floated from galena, using galena-adapted cells, but not with the sphalerite-adapted cells. The cells adapted to galena assay a higher polysaccharide content and are more hydrophilic, while the sphalerite-adapted cells have a higher protein content and possess greater hydrophobicity. Transmission electron microscopic studies have provided evidence in support of the differences between the cell surface characteristics of sphalerite- and galenaadapted cells (Figure 1). Possible mechanisms of interaction between the minerals and the bacterial cells are discussed."
