Canada has a long history of marine-related industry and onshore mining. Even so, commercial interest in marine mining, excluding seawater mineral extraction and offshore extensions of hardrock deposits such as iron and coal, has been sporadic; despite the fact that shelf mineral deposits supply a significant proportion of the national market requirements for many countries. Several factors have accounted for this including: a relative abundance of onland mineral desposits; the fact that onland deposits can be mined using conventional technology; and, a general lack of knowledge and public awareness as to Canadian offshore non-fuel mineral resource potential. In the mid-1970s the Department of Energy, Mines & Resources formed the Departmental Coordinating Committee on Ocean Mining. The Committee addressed the question of shelf non-fuel mineral resource potential and concluded that, while several reports had raised the possibilty of this alternative source, there had not been a systematic evaluation of the resource base. This led to the formation of a Shelf Working Group, whose task it was to outline and implement a departmental program to advance our knowledge of shelf resource potential. Paleomagnetic properties of sediment cores were examined to reconstruct paleodepositional conditions in the Korea Deep Ocean Study (KODOS) manganese nodule area, located in the northeastern equatorial Pacific. The KODOS sediments studied have a stable remanent magnetization with both normal and reversed polarities, which are well correlated with the geomagnetic polarity timescale for the late Pliocene and Pleistocene. Average sedimentation rates were 1.56 and 0.88 mm/kiloyear for the Pleistocene and late Pliocene, respectively. Clay mineralogy and scanning electron microscope analyses of the sediments indicate that terrestrial material was transported to the deep-sea floor during these times. The variations of sedimentation rates with age may be explained by the onset of the northern hemisphere glaciation and subsequent climatic deterioration during the Pliocene and Pleistocene. For the Pleistocene, an increasing sedimentation rate implies that input of terrestrial materials was high, and also a high input of biogenic materials was detected as a result of increased primary production in the surface water. The down-core variations in paleomagnetic and rock-magnetic properties of the KODOS sediments were affected by dissolution processes in an oxic depositional regime. As shown by magnetic intensity and hysteresis parameters, the high natural remanent magnetization (NRM) stability in the upper, yellowish brown layers indicates that the magnetic carrier was in pseudo-single domain states. In the lower, dark brown sediments, only coarse magnetic grains survived dissolution and the NRM was carried by more abundant, multi-domain grains of low magnetic stability. The down-core variation of magnetic properties suggests that the KODOS sediments were subjected to dissolution processes resulting in a loss of the more stable components of the magnetic fraction with increasing core depth.

In late 1988, the Committee for Coordination of Joint Prospecting for Mineral Resources in South Pacific Offshore Areas (CCOP/SOPAC), Suva, Fiji, consulted the Continental Shelf Division of the Marine Minerals Technology Center regarding low-tech, low-cost, reconnaissance sampling systems for a variety of nearshore needs. Materials of interest to several member island nations included silica and calcareous aggregate for cement manufacture, sand for beach replenishment, heavy minerals, and precious metals. A principal criteria of the system was that it be of low-tech design, and as far as possible, suitable for construction on the islands from available materials. It should also be operable with SOPAC personnel on island vessels of opportunity. The system selected to satisfy these requirements was a convertible drill of basic airlift design, capable of operating with easy modification as either a vibralift or airlift, depending on the desired application. The basic system included a drill pipe constructed of heavy duty 76 mm (3") black iron pipe, divided into three 3 meter sections (for ease of transport), fitted with an air intake manifold and bit at the lower end. A 25 mm (1") galvanized pipe assembled in three similar sections and clamped to the drill pipe served as a water jet to assist in cutting. Air was supplied to the manifold by means of a 12 mm (1/2") pipe also clamped along the length of the drill pipe. Vast mineral resources of copper, zinc, cobalt and gold have been identified off the coast of Papua New Guinea at depths exceeding 2,000 meters. Accessing them in a cost effective manner and without destroying the marine habitat requires overcoming numerous technical and operational challenges. Although there are a number of deep-sea mining operations underway worldwide, the depths encountered are significantly less than will be required to mine these ore deposits. To date, only the oil industry has developed technologies for successfully accessing reserves at depths of 3,000m.

Seafloor massive sulfides have been a subject of interest for profitable commercial mining these ten years. Because of the higher Au, Ag, and Cu contents, they have received much attention as immediate commercial mining targets by private companies and nations. Some of them already proposed the technologies necessary for the commercial mining. However, the technologies for survey, excavation, lifting, and ore dressing have not yet well been examined from viewpoint of the economy. In this presentation, the authors present some key factors and improvements for better economy in the mining.

A geologist can be likened to a medical pathologist trying to figure out from faint clues how something had lived and how it died, often long after the event. Present-day seafloor hydrothermalism has empowered geologists/pathologists to dissect a living system, in this case volcanogenic massive sulfides (vms) deposits of copper, zinc, lead, silver and gold. On the other hand, a considerable amount of our understanding of seafloor hydrothermal processes and its products stem from our knowledge, much of it from industry, of these same processes and products that formed ancient ores in oceans as much as 2700 million years ago and are now mined on land.

Recent studies estimate the depletion mid-point (dmp) for conventional natural gas to be reached around year 2022, and for conventional oil to be reached around year 2017. These numbers are based on simplified assumptions of unchanged demand and do not include increasing reserves from discovery of new fields and also do not include a shifting of resources to reserves e.g. due to an increasing oil price (Gerling et al., 2005). Anyhow, these prospects require conventional hydrocarbons to be substituted in the near future.

We report preliminary results for a group of unique samples collected with MBARI’s ROV Tiburon on August 12, 2005. The samples were collected from the East Blanco Depression (EBD) diffuse-flow hydrothermal field, which was determined in a previous study to cover an area of at least 100 m by 80 m (Hein et al., 1999). The survey reported on here extends that field to more than 1500 m in an approximately N-S direction. The EBD, a pull-apart basin, occurs near the western end of the Blanco Fracture Zone (BFZ), which connects the Juan de Fuca and Gorda Ridge spreading centers (Fig. 1). The samples were collected from a waterdepth range of 3343-3380 m.

The marine minerals program of the Minerals Management Service (MMSI has undergone significant changes during 1991. Formerly the Office of Strategic and International Minerals, the program has been renamed and invested with additional responsibilities. The new name, Office of International Activities and Marine Minerals, (INTERMAR) reflects its dual mission. INTERMAR'S role in the international area was broadened in January 1991 to provide the MMS with a focal point for identifying and coordinating international opportunities of mutual interest and benefit. Opportunities include energy and nonenergy minerals and a broad range of areas such as resource and environmental assessment and management, structural and operational safety, royalty management, regulatory matters and public affairs. Cooperative efforts involving information exchanges, training programs, research, and similar arrangements are receiving particular emphasis. Australia, Canada, France, Japan, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the USSR represent a growing list of countries with whom arrangements have been established. Support has also been lent to other Federal Agencies and the United Nations in areas where MMS expertise and resources can impart a significant contribution. Opportunities will also be explored which involve Pacific insular areas.

The mineralogy and geochemistry of hydrothermally altered wall rocks from different modern basaltic- and felsic-hosted hydrothermal fields at seafloor spreading centers and convergent margins have been studied to determine the characteristics of different types of alteration and to calculate the magnitudes of elemental exchanges between seawater and wall rock.

Modern Kuroko-type deposits have been much reported in submarine calderas and cauldrons in the EEZ of Japan since 1988. Some of them have been found based on heavy mineral analysis of sediments in which sulfide particles may be derived from hydrothermal sources in the ambient areas. From the end of August to early September 2007, in the middle Izu-Ogasawara arc south of Tokyo, ROV expeditions were carried out in submarine calderas in order to examine mineralogical features between intact heavy particles spouting out from sulfide chimneys and heavy minerals such as sulfides in sediments around sulfide mounds in Kuroko-type deposits, and to find more newly formed hydrothermal sulfide fields in those areas. Some preliminary results from the ROV expeditions are reported here.

Ferromanganese crusts on the seamounts in the Pacific Ocean are potential resources of cobalt, nickel, platinum and REEs. Particularly, those of the Republic of Marshall Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) waters are believed to be of the highest resources potential area in the Pacific Ocean. The total six cruises using the Japanese Research Vessel Hakurei Maru No. 2 were carried out in the seamounts of the Marshall Islands in 1996, 1998 and 2002, and of the FSM in the 1997, 1998 and 2005 for evaluation of economic potential for cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts as part of the Japan-SOPAC joint project. During these cruises numerous data such as bathymetric, geological, geophysical and environmental data were obtained. Geophysical exploration with backscatter mapping and side scan sonar, visual imaging using towed TV camera and geological sampling using dredge bucket and/or benthic multi-coring system (BMS) were conducted on these seamounts. In this presentation, we will report the mode of distribution of the crusts and calculated resource estimation based on the results of these geological and geophysical shipboard survey and land-based analyses. Hyperspectral remote sensing has been used extensively on land to identify minerals for the mining industries. An underwater hyperspectral imager (UHI) has been developed at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. It captures optical fingerprints within the spectral range of 400-700 nanometers, with 1 nm resolution. The UHI has been tested on nodules and SMS deposits in the laboratory and on the sea floor to establish if this technology can be used to identify marine mineral deposits, to determine type of deposit and distribution.

Research on marine gas hydrate and the methane cycle has a tradition at IFM-GEOMAR. In summer 1996 during a cruise with RV SONNE offshore Oregon (USA) scientists of the former GEOMAR recovered the largest amount of gas hydrate from the seafloor. This discovery stimulated research on marine gas hydrates in Germany and induced funding of scientific programs such as LOTUS and OMEGA with numerous innovative technologies within the special program GEOTECHNOLOGIEN of BMBF and DFG. The primary objectives of ongoing and future research are to achieve a comprehensive knowledge of: • gas hydrate distribution and quantity; • variation and regulation of gas hydrate formation and dissociation as well as of the related fluid flow; • functioning of chemosynthetic communities in methane oxidation, carbonate precipitation and methanotrophy as biological barrier against methane emission and • delineating the escape routes of methane to the hydrosphere and atmosphere.

Recommendations have been drafted following an international multidisciplinary panel discussion organized at UNESCO/IOC by the Académie des Sciences d?Outre-Mer on 15 December 2010 conveyed, according to its mandate, to the French government and to an international pool of scientists and stakeholders. These take into consideration the relevant Provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of 10 December 1982, the Rio ?Earth Summit? Convention of Biological Diversity of 5 June 1992 as well as the activities and recommendations implemented for the world?s oceans and seas, in particular by the International Seabed Authority (ISA) and the recent reports and scientific works (including those implemented by the ISA Kaplan, Ifremer, COI-Unesco). The recommendations integrate, for one of the ecosystems, the conclusions of the project of the conclusions of an IOC-UNESCO / Government of Flanders project (2004-2010) implemented by Dr. V. Since becoming a public company in October 2005, Neptune Minerals has continued to advance its primary aims. Hydrogenetic Fe-Mn crusts are ubiquitous in the ocean basins and play an important role in marine mineral-deposit research because of their widespread occurrence and high concentrations of valuable and rare metals. Directed research, which started in the last quarter of the 20th century, has provided significant results, with substantial amounts of data produced on Fe-Mn crusts structure, composition, and distribution in the global ocean. Detailed study of several seamounts has given confidence about the scale of Fe-Mn crust development and their characteristics. Now, commercial interests gain more and more attention. However, at the same time some theoretical questions related to Fe-Mn crust history including controls on metal sources and concentrations have not yet been answered. Here, we present the overview of age, composition, distribution, and geological setting of hydrogenetic Fe-Mn crusts from Pacific and Atlantic seamounts and discuss the geological evolution and conditions that led to the formation of potentially economic concentrations of metals. The age, composition, and distribution of Fe-Mn crusts in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans were determined by using a Fe-Mn deposits database compiled from our original data, published papers, published databases, and other international sources. Comparative analysis of Fe-Mn deposits from the Atlantic and Pacific oceans shows that there are similarities in basic characteristics of crust formation in both oceans. Simultaneously, there are significant differences in the scale of Fe-Mn crust distribution and composition that can be explained by differences in geological settings and characteristics of the deposition environment.
