"IntroductionTHE PINCHER CREEK gas condensate field, in Township 3, Range 28, and Townships 3 and 4, Range 29, West of the Fourth Meridian, was discovered in 1947 by the Canadian Gulf Oil Company with the completion of Pincher Creek No. 1 well in the Madison lime-stone of Mississippian age.This discovery was the result of a great deal of detailed seismic work in the area and is a credit to the geophysical personnel of the Company. The depth of the reservoir varies from 7,400 feet to 8,200 feet subsea, with the established water level at -8,200 feet. The predicted depth was but a scant 100 feet from that found in the discovery well, at 11, 705 feet. Since the discovery of the reservoir, three additional wells have penetrated the Madison limestone and have further verified the original •seismic interpretation of the limits of this reservoir.To date, •only a very small amount of gas has been produced from this field. Consequently, the reservoir studies that have been made so far are predominantly based on investigations of the phase behaviour of the fluid and physical characteristics of the reservoir rock. In view of the above limitations, it has been necessary to set up and perform model reservoir studies with the fluids and to recover as much core from the productive Madison limestone as possible in order that it might be analysed by conventional laboratory technique and be subjected to detailed microscopic geological examination."

Apart from a few sketches and incomplete maps, mainly topographical, and one or two detailed maps of placer-creeks, there is little information on the topography and geology of most of the country adjacent to the sections of the Alaska Highway in the Liard River area, particularly that part east of Kechika river. In 1943, the Geological Survey of Canada made a recon-naissance from Fort Nelson clown the river of that name to the Liard, thence up the latter to Hell Gate, and also up Beaver river for a distance of fifty miles. The whole of the area covered was found to be underlain by sedimentary rocks, not a single igneous dyke being seen. The British Columbia Department of Mines began reconnaissances near the highway both in and north of the drainage basin of Prophet and Muskwa rivers with a view to finding structures favourable for the accumulation of oil. In Liard River valley near the mouth of Smith river and at intervals from there clown to Devil' s Portage occur warm springs whose character and origin are not definitely' known, since they have not been investigated (21, p. 38A). Similar springs are said to occur at several localities over a broad belt extending from Muskwa river across the Liard to the Nahanni River country (26, p. 11). On Liard river below the mouth of Dease river, stratified sands, gravels, and clays of Pleistocene (?) age are constantly met with and in one or two places are underlain by sandy clays. The distribution of the latter, however, is very limited in the section cut by the river west of the Rocky mountains. The only range of these mountains that reaches the Liard is the high limestone ridge which approaches the mouth of Vents river from the southeast and then almost vanishes a few miles to the northwest of it (27, pp. 43-45). In general, the ranges of the Rockies in the area under consideration have been but little explored, but they are undoubtedly very largely sedimentary and, with the exception of some volcanics and intrusives on their western flanks, are probably almost entirely so. Unlike the high, deeply incised ranges in southern British Columbia, they dwindle in elevation north of Terminus mountain to low-wooded ridges separated by wide swampy valleys, and practically lose their identity between it and the Liard. The foothills, which, along the Liard, have a width of 38 miles (from near the mouth of Trout river to Hell Gate) are composed of a great series of alternating shales and sandstones, with some limestones, all folded closely together, which resemble those found in the foothills farther south (27, pp. 50, 19-20).

To many of us who remember the wonderful satisfaction of our first responsibility for directing two horsepower hitched to a farm cart or hay wagon, there still arises a feeling of some awe at the casual flick of the switch with which our sons and daughters summon to their convenience the service of some one hundred or more horsepower.Energy is the vital component of our existence and, no matter what contempt our day-to-day familiarity may •breed, it is wise to .pause from time to time and consider our national energy standing. Have we still capital in the bank? Are our expenditures wisely •conceived and well directed? Is provision being made for the years •ahead for the needs of our children and our children's children?"

This paper examines aspects of Canadian mine backfilling operations that may be implemented to assist in reducing solid waste production, lowering energy costs, and restricting Greenhouse Gas emissions. Many Canadian underground mines use backfill to mitigate environmental effects associated with tailings disposal. Backfill production and disposal are energy intensive processes that require an average energy cost of 37.7 MJ/tonne of backfill to complete. Mine backfills, in engineering applications, also commonly make use of cement as a stabilizing agent. Cement requires an additional energy cost ranging between 4,637 and 6,600 MJ/tonne to produce. The large energy needs associated with mine backfilling and cement production operations create significant CO2 and Greenhouse Gas emissions. Approximately 1 tonne of CO2 and Greenhouse Gas is emitted for each tonne of Normal Portland Cement produced. For single mines producing 3,000 tonnes of backfill per day, considering both backfill and cement emission source terms, total emissions of CO2 ranging between 120.36 tonnes and 169.44 tonnes/day are anticipated. In Ontario, mining operations contribute 700,000 - 840,000 tonnes/year of CO2 and Greenhouse Gas emissions to satisfy backfill cement consumption needs alone. Potential reductions of cement in backfill would significantly reduce emission of these gases and lower their adverse environmental impacts. This paper identifies alternate, equally effective and lower cost binder agent strategies for cement in backfill that may lead to cement consumption reductions. Post-consumer glass represents one such potential alternative backfill binder. Over 950,000 tonnes of glass are disposed of annually in Canada, two-thirds of which exists in the form of easily recoverable glass packaging that is not currently recycled or reused. The partial replacement of cement by waste glass may address goals for reducing non-recyclable glass waste disposal; enhancing mine back filling operations; reducing total backfill energy costs; and ultimately reducing Greenhouse Gas emissions levels currently generated by the Canadian mining industry.

"Pulverized limestone rock dust used in United States underground coal mines to prevent and suppress coal dust explosions must easily disperse by forces of a methane or coal dust explosion. Moisture in the mine environment causes caking of the dust. Colorado School of Mines researchers performed dispersibility tests in a full-size explosion test drift. Tests included conventional, hydrophobized, and rock dust approved for German mines. Conventional and German standard rock dust products partially agglomerate, which may not be effective in suppressing a coal dust explosion, while hydrophobic rock dust retains better dispersibility.INTRODUCTIONA coal dust explosion devastated the Upper Big Branch mine in 2010 resulting in the death of 29 miners, the worst mining accident in the United States since 1972. The explosion propagated through approximately 65 km of active mine workings, but was extinguished in areas that had been properly rock dusted (Page, 2011). Researchers have long studied and established the ability of inert limestone rock dust to suppress coal dust explosions, see Richmond et al. (1975), Cybulski (1975), and Sapko et al. (2000).To be effective, rock dust must contribute to a total inert content of > 80% by weight and 100% of rock dust particles must pass through an 850 µm sieve, while 70% of the rock dust must be finer than 74 µm. This is established in US regulations 30 CFR §75.2. Dry rock dust is a nuisance that prevents mining work downwind from rock dusting activities. To overcome this problem, dust manufacturers have proposed applying the rock dust as a wet slurry or foam. After drying, manufacturers expected the slurry or foam-applied dust to have the same explosion suppression capabilities as dry-applied rock dust.Researchers at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) designed and built a full-scale, underground Explosion Test Facility (ETF) at the CSM Edgar Experimental Mine in Idaho Springs, Colorado about 20 miles west of the CSM Golden, Colorado campus. To disperse the different rock dust products, researchers produced an air pressure pulse using a mesh array of PETN detonation cord. This method is simpler, more reproducible and safer than other methods considered, including methane-air explosions and a compressed air cannon. The detonation cord blasts produce a wind velocity of 30 to 50 m/s, the minimum velocity at which coal dust explosions can propagate, based on research by Nagy (1981) and Cybulski (1975)."

"This paper outlines some of the factors that affect the airflow required for the ventilation of modern diesel-powered equipment and of electric equipment and examines how they can be applied in determining reasonable ventilation rates for Tier IV compliant diesel equipment and for electric equipment operating in mining environments. Airflow calculations for modern diesel-powered equipment and for electric equipment are more complex and must be based on a combination of factors that are unique to each mine. Methodologies for ventilation rate determinations for each case are proposed in this paper.INTRODUCTIONTraditionally, airflow requirements for production and support equipment operating in underground mines have been determined by multiplying the vehicle power by a ventilation rate that was either mandated by regulations or determined empirically from known quantities. However, in light of the drastic reductions to diesel equipment emissions mandated by the US EPA Tier IV and EURO Stage 4 regulations, there is still a great deal of uncertainty in the underground mining industry among those responsible for the ventilation of planned new mines or the expansion of current mines. The question remains, what ventilation rates should the ventilation system designer apply for modern diesel equipment?Also, given the ongoing development of grid/battery-electric equipment and active construction of fully electric mines, it has become critical to determine adequate airflow rates per brake kilowatt of electric engine power. One of the most important criteria for determining ventilation rates for electric equipment is the amount of heat they generate, as this is the most significant emission produced by electric equipment (which do not produce exhaust gases or particulates). Therefore, ventilation rates required to dissipate heat from electric equipment must be suitably determined for all electric vehicle fleets operating in underground mines."

Considerable thought and discussion had been devoted toward provision for increased milling capacity at the Allenby concentrator of The Granby Consolidated Mining, Smelting and Power Company operations as early as 1940. During the war, plans for the installation of an additional grindi.ng unit were formulated but were not carried out. It took considerable time after the war to prepare the mine again for its highest rate of production since, with the scarcity of men, development work had been sacrificed in favour of maximum ore shipments. In order to prepare for the expected competitive market in copper, the matter of increasing the capacity of the concentrator was again given serious attention. As ore became available in the mine and the output of the mill was increased, limitations for a satisfactory recovery were observed, due to the overloaded condition of the classifier units at the higher tonnages. From a metallurgical standpoint, the ore from the Copper Mountain mine had always been difficult to treat on account of the finely disseminated character of much of the mineralization and the difficulty of grinding to the desired fineness. This trouble has become aggravated with time as an increasing amount of wall-rock has diluted the ore and lower grade orebodies have been mined. It therefore has been, and is, the practice at the concentrator to maintain the maximum amount of reduction in size of material fed to the flotation units as is possible for the daily tonnage to be milled. This means that all the grinding units are operated for the maximum possible time, and that the classifiers are regulated to return as much feed ?as possible to the mills. The number of tons to be milled for ?the day is determined by the concentrator superintendent after ascertaining the availability of ore from the mine, the condition of the concentrator ore bins, and the need for repairs in the rolls plant. In order to maintain the tonnage des1red, hourly estimates are made of the rate of grinding by weighing the amount of ore contained on one foot of each of the belts conveying the feed to the various ball-mills, and adjustments are made accordingly.

"Abstract - The 12.1 Mt Brunswick No. 6 Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag massive sulfide deposit (New Brunswick, Canada) lies between two subaqueous felsic volcanic formations near the base of the Middle Ordovician Tetagouche Group. The footwall comprises rhyodacitic pyroclastic rocks (Nepisiguit Falls Formation), whereas the hanging wall comprises a sequence of rhyolitic flows, breccias, and hyaloclastites (Flat Landing Brook Formation), with an age difference of less than 3 m.y. The Brunswick No. 6 deposit is a proximal autochthonous deposit with a well-zoned massive sulfide body and a basal Cu zone that, at depth, develops into a stockwork stringer sulfide (feeder) system. The massive sulfides are capped sharply by a layered magnetite-chert unit that extends regionally beyond the deposit. The deposit has a keel shape (sheath) formed by the F1F2 interference pattern. The heterogeneous ductile deformation and upper greenschist-grade regional metamorphism has transposed many of the epigenetic stockwork structures and alteration within the host sequence. Hydrothermal alteration is much more extensive, both vertically and laterally, in the footwall (a few 100 m) than in the hanging wall (<100 m). Anomalies farther up in the hanging wall sequence seem to be associated with independent alteration systems related to the rhyolite domes. The least-altered footwall units exhibit keratophyric alteration (albite or adularia) and weak Mg enrichment (chlorite). More intense micaceous (sericite and Mg-rich chlorite) alteration occurs around the footwall sequence. The transposed stockwork stringer sulfides are typically composed of Fe-rich chlorite (± sericite, ± silica) with pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, and sphalerite. The (Fe2O3T+MgO)/(Na2O+K2O) and base metal alteration indices are the best practical lithogeochemical vectoring tools at this deposit. Sommaire - Le gîte de 12.1 Mt de sulfures massifs de Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag Brunswick No.6 est localisé entre deux formations volcaniques felsiques sous-marines situées près de la base du Groupe de Tetagouche d’âge Ordovicien Moyen. Le mur consiste en roches pyroclastiques rhyodacitiques (Formation de Nepisiguit Falls) tandis que le toit consiste en une séquence de coulées, de brèches et d’hyaloclastites de composition rhyolitique (Formation de Flat Landing Brook); la différence d’âge entre les deux est de moins de 3 m.y. Le gisement Brunswick No. 6 est un gîte autochtone proximal comprenant un corps de sulfures massifs clairement zoné ainsi qu’une zone cuprifère basale qui passe progressivement à un stockwork de filonnets de sulfure en profondeur (feeder). Les sulfures massifs sont abruptement surmontés d’une unité laminaire de chert et de magnétite dont l’extension par delà le gisement est régionale. Le gisement affecte la forme d’une quille (fourreau) résultant d’un patron d’interférence F1F2. Plusieurs des structures épigénétiques du stockwork et des patrons d’altération de l’encaissant ont été transposés par la déformation ductile hétérogène ainsi que par le métamorphisme régional au faciès des schistes verts. L’altération hydrothermale est beaucoup plus importante, tant verticalement qu’horizontalement, dans le mur (quelques 100 m) que dans le toit (<100 m). Les anomalies situées plus haut dans le mur semblent être reliées à des systèmes d’altération indépendants associés aux dômes de rhyolite. Les unités les moins altérées du mur une altération kératophyrique (en albite ou en adulaire) ainsi qu’un faible enrichissement en Mg (chlorite). Une altération en mica (séricite et chlorite magnésienne) plus intense est présente autour de la séquence du mur. Les sulfures du stockwork de filonnets transposés consistent typiquement en chlorite ferrifère (± séricite, ± silice) accompagnée de pyrite, de pyrrhotite, de chalcopyrite, d’arsénopyrite et de sphalérite. L’indice d’altération (Fe2O3T+MgO)/(Na2O+K2O) et l’indice des métaux usuels sont les outils d’exploration les plus appropriés dans ce gisement."

The selection of the main mineralised zone (MMZ) concentrator milling circuit has followed a comprehensive route over the preceding 10 years. Many knowledgeable parties have contributed and assisted in developing the milling circuit according to the best available information. The final selection of the flow sheet was completed after DRA conducted a techno-economic study on four possible comminution circuits ranging from conventional crushing and ball milling to fully autogenous (AG) milling. The results from all the above mentioned work indicated that it is possible to treat the MMZ ore at the desired throughputs to the desired grind sizes in a fully autogenous grinding circuit. The flow sheet was designed to treat the main mineralised zone (MMZ) arising?s from both underground and open cast operations and incorporates a fully autogenous grinding (AG) circuit. Commissioning of the 375ktpm concentrator at Nkomati Nickel began in August 2009 with the first ore reporting to the mill on the 15th of September 2009.

The optimal selection of machine or machine group for building processes is very important role of building planner during the process of building planning. During this process building planner have to analyze several factors influencing the final effective decision concerning this problem. There are several factors and criteria for effective selection of building machines. In our contribution there are analyzed: ability of machines to realize designed building process (quality aspect), duration of mechanized process (time aspect) and minimizing of energy consumption (cost and environmental aspect). Selected scientific methods and theories of problem solution can be divided into these groups: theory of system (creation of building machine selection method), multi-criteria optimizing method (analysis of mechanized building process from the point of more optimal criteria), queuing theory (application during the mathematical modeling of mechanized soil processes), method of scientific analysis (analysis of factors influencing final decisions), method of scientific synthesis (creation of optimizing method implemented into building processes and possible application in construction sector). Multi-criteria optimizing method were during our research work implemented into soil processes and selected building group machines (excavators and trucks), which are very often used in construction and mining processes. This method can be considered as a multi-level decision making process based on multiple parameters. In our contribution is presented key mathematical models for model example solution and software built in Java, which has been created as a support for method described in this contribution. Application of this method and software will increase the effectiveness of building machine selection from the point of key criteria of optimizing: quality, time and energy consumption.

Early testwork was carried out to select the plant process design criteria and flowsheet selection. Additional testwork was carried out during the feasibility study to support the optimization of the plant design criteria. The test results showed that the recovery of gold was not very sensitive to grind size in the range of 75 to 105 microns. An additional result was that the presence of lead nitrate did not improve the kinetics of gold leaching. This conclusion was supported by the low content of sulphides in the ore. It was also found that the presence of lead nitrate increased copper dissolution, producing the potential for an increase of copper reporting to electrowinning, which is detrimental to the overall gold recovery process. The use of oxygen in leaching was investigated to increase leach kinetics. The results of leaching tests to compare using oxygen instead of air indicated that, due to the improved leach time, it was possible to reduce the number of leaching tanks from twenty four (24) to twenty (20).

Introduction Although the equilibrium conditions of the copper-tin alloys have been the subject of a ?great amount of research, the equilibrium diagram is still in doubt. The first systematic investigation of the series was made in 1894 by Le Chatelier, who published a freezing-point curve. In 1895, Roberts-Austen and Stansfield published the complete liquidus and partial solidus curves, which they modified somewhat in 1897. Their liquidus as given in 1897 is essentially that accepted today (Figure 3). Haycock and Neville also published a liquid us curve in 1897. In 1898, William Campbell published a series of micrographs showing the changes in microstructure which accompanied the thermal changes of Stansfield? s diagram. The classic work on the bronze series was published by Heycock and Neville in 1903. Their diagram was based on both thermal and microscopic evidence, and is the first for this series of alloys which can be considered nearly complete. Further, it was the first bronze diagram in which any attempt was made to apply the phase rule in the interpretation of the thermal and microscopic results. That portion of Heycock and Neville&apos;s diagram covered by the present work is reproduced in Figure 7.

"Blast fumes are one of the major sources for NOx in underground mines. In 2016, the Occupational Exposure Limits for NOx in Germany were reduced by 90%. The task is to keep re-entry times after blasting at the present level and thereby ensure an economic operation of the mine. Measurements show that using ventilation solely is not sufficient. A new approach to reduce NOx from blast fumes is described. Laboratory experiments were performed and a reduction of NOx was observed. Measurements were conducted at an explosive factory’s testing facility and in an underground mine at blasting operations. INTRODUCTION Whether for production of ore or for drift development, the processes in an underground mine are always the same: 1) fracturing the rock, 2) loading the pile, 3) support the resulting cavity. The fracturing of the rock can be done mechanically, by cutting, for example by using continuous miners or tunnel boring machines, or by drilling and blasting. Drilling and blasting is more flexible than mechanical driving, as it can be used independently of the rock strength. Furthermore, this driving method allows a more flexible reaction to changes in geological and/or operational conditions. Thus, underground mining and blasting are almost inextricably linked with each other, and regardless of the size and level of technology of the mine, blasting is hardly avoidable. Depending on the mining method chosen and the existing framework conditions, such as the mechanical properties of the rock or the availability of machinery, blasting is an integral part of daily operations. Even in mines where blasting is not part of regular operations, it cannot be completely avoided. The blast fumes generated by the explosions are, in addition to diesel engine emissions, one of the two main sources of emissions of nitrous gases underground. Up to now, state of the art for dealing with blast fumes is ventilation. The fumes are diluted with fresh air and ventilated out of the mine. This treatment of blast fumes is more than sufficient with the former German Occupational Exposure Limits (OEL). The adaption of the OEL in Germany to the recommendations of the Committee on Occupational Exposure Limits (SCOEL), a committee of the European Commission, leads to big challenges for the mining industry in reducing the concentrations of these gases at the workplaces underground. On its meeting on May 2nd and 3rd 2016, the Committee on Hazardous Substances (Ausschuss für Gefahrstoffe, AGS), an advisory body of the German Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (BMAS), advised the BMAS to copy the OEL, as recommended by the SCOEL, to the Technical Rules for Hazardous Substances (TRGS 900). BMAS followed this advice, consequently the new OEL where published on November 4th 2016 and became part of the TRGS 900. Table 1 shows the former and new OEL for Germany. These new OEL became law after publishing, but two exceptions were made: For tunneling operations, they became law on October 31st 2017, for mining operations they will become law on October 31st 2021 (BAuA, 2004, 2016, 2017)."

THESE forums have been held annually since they were introduced by Mr. L. E. Djingheuzian in 1957. The response of millmen to questionnaires such as the one this year is ample evidence of the interest these create. This year's topic is unlike those of past years since it is an attempt to understand a new concept of grinding rather than to improve the old. Before, we were thinking in terms of 2-5 cents improvement in grinding costs, now we will be discussing savings of 15-2 5 cents. As a background for this forum we will begin by summarizing the major controversial issues relating to grinding with steel, many of which will undoubtedly apply to pebble milling. Our •task to-day is to learn what has already been done in pebble milling and obtain a fair overall view of this method of grinding.

"Concurrent with the continuing demise of many Canadian mining towns is the rise of a new method of providing remote mine sites with a workforce. This is the Long Distance Commute (LDC) which uses commuter labour and requires no permanent settlements to support the mine operation. It provides a flexible and cost effective method of operation to the industry and relieves both governments and industry of the expense of building and maintaining mining towns. However, little attention has been paid to the effect on workers or their families of the LDC work schedule whereby workers spend a fixed number of days at the site followed by a fixed number of days at home. Off-shore oil rig experience would indicate that negative social impacts may be expected. Research leading to an understanding of the problems involved seems to be indicated. One innovative suggestion has been to use already established but dying mining towns as workforce pick-up points for new LDC operations further north.BackgroundUntil recently, mine towns were considered as a necessary component of mine development. This was a natural symbiosis resulting from the need to provide workforce accommodation close to isolated mine sites. The early mine communities in Canada were often just a huddle of shacks around a head frame. Gradually mining companies began to provide housing which varied from basic duplexes and quads in grid pattern layout to professionally planned and designed towns, either model company towns or the more recent suburbs-in-the-bush, the so-called ""instant towns"" of the postWorld War II era of resource development. The improvement in accommodation reflected the need to attract a stable workforce as mine operations became more sophisticated. City amenities were expected and offered in these mine towns as a way of encouraging a permanent community of mining families. Indeed in towns like Manitouwdage, Schefferville, and others, it was not unusual to find a significant percentage of two- and three-generation families apparently providing the permanent mining communities so desired by mine operators."

World wide applications for nickel use will be summarized and examples of those uses given. Nickel products are critical to many important aspects of modern society. These products are just as important for modern China as they are in other parts of the world. It is argued that future pattern of nickel use in China should be expected to be very similar to that in the rest of the developed world. Total use of nickel in products in China is already very large. In 2004, it was the largest market for stainless steel (nickel containing) in the world. A survey of Chinese stainless steel applications will be presented. Current high nickel prices have revived speculation about substitution, particularly for nickel containing stainless steels. The presentation will discuss some of the complicating factors that need to be taken into account when considering substitution. These factors are as valid in modern China as they are in other developed economies. Recent substitution efforts and the reaction to them will be examined. The Nickel Institute position regarding appropriate application of the various grades of stainless steel will be discussed. Price-motivated substitution in China, and elsewhere, will occur but it is argued that the extent will probably be limited.

Since milling began in 1909, the PJV Dome mill has been expanded several times, to the current throughput of 11,500 tonnes per day. PJV recovers free gold using crushing and grinding followed by gravity concentration. The remaining gold in the gravity tails is recovered by cyanide leaching followed by Carbon-In -Pulp processing. Prior to 1993, cyanide tailings were impounded in the tailings pond where cyanide was allowed to degrade naturally. Effluent was discharged seasonally during the summer and early autumn to maintain the water balance. In 1993, an Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) was designed and constructed for the purpose of removing dissolved metals and suspended solids. In 1997, an INCO SO2/Air cyanide destruction process was added to the ETP. Even though the ETP was successful in meeting the cyanide, metals and total suspended solids (TSS) discharge limits, often the treated effluent failed to pass toxicity tests. Following successful laboratory and plant scale testing, the addition of the chelant EDTA (ethylene diamine-tetra-acetic-acid) was commenced in the 1999 operating season. To date, discharged effluent has passed all toxicity tests. This paper describes the evolution of the ETP from its early conception to the various phases of upgrade needed to meet the MISA discharge limits.

"The aim of this investigation was to determine the most suitable additive for recovering metals from converter slags generated during Ni extraction. Fluxes analyzed were silica and lime and reductants included pig iron, ferrosilicon and copper-silicon compound. Slag was settled at 1300°C for one hour to simulate the smelting environment. The newly formed matte and slag were characterized by chemical composition and morphology. Microstructural studies showed that slag formed after adding reductants consisted of primarily fayalite, with traces of magnetite. Entrained matte was present in the slag mostly as prills of Ni3S2-FeS matrix and a Cu2S-FeS secondary phase below 10µm in diameter. Kinetic parameters of matte formation, valuable metal recovery rates and partition coefficients were deduced. Silica additions generated higher partition coefficients for copper and nickel than the addition of lime. Additives used as reducing agents had higher valuable metal recovery rates and partition coefficients. Silica additions favoured the formation a higher grade matte while lime additions will hinder metal recovery. Pig iron, ferrosilicon and Cu30Si were the most effective reductants for valuable metals recovery. Cu10Si and coke additions had little to no effect on valuable metals recovery."

Although we have yet to reach the midway point in the decade, the copper concentrate market has already witnessed some of the most volatile swings in history, moving from record high treatment and refining charges in 1991-92 to historic lows, in real terms, during the past year. What has been the cause for such volatility? By and large the swings can be attributed to factors of supply and demand in the "custom" copper concentrate market. For example, two relatively recent events which had a major impact on the supply-demand balance were the shutdown of the Bougainville copper mine in Papua New Guinea in 1989 due to rebel insurgency and the startup of the La Escondida mine in Chile in 1992. The first event, threw a balanced to slightly surplus concentrate market into a substantial deficit, forcing treatment terms down as smelters, caught short by the loss of concentrate supplies scrambled to cover their positions. The second event, brought over 300,000 mt per year of new copper in concentrate to the market, more than reversing the losses from the Bougainville shutdown. In combination with other additions to mine capacity via new mines or expansions, the custom concentrate market moved into a huge oversupply in 1991-92 and many mines found themselves unable to place uncommitted tonnage. But even this event was quickly overcome by the use of underutilized capacity at non-traditional buyers, such as those in the C.I.S., Zambia, or those which were not traditionally buyers of custom materials. All of this has happened in the space of five short years, a mere snapshot in the history of the market. I'll return to these points a little further on, but first I would like to review the fundamentals which govern the copper concentrate market.

Medium- to highvolatile coals are mined at its Fording River operations in southeastern British Columbia. This paper discusses some of the mine design and production related problems encountered, and how they have been resolved. Other aspects of the operation such as geography, geology and standard mining methods employed are also covered.IntroductionFording Coal Limited was formed in 1968 to mine and market metallurgical coal resources held by the company in the East Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia<1>. The company, at its Fording River operations, holds approximately 19,635 hectares of coal lands, having an estimated resource of 3.5 billion tonnes of metallurgical coal. Total reserves are approximately 520 million tonnes.Fording Coal is owned 600Jo by Canadian Pacific Enterprises Limited and 400Jo by Cominco Limited. Cominco itself is owned approximately 540Jo by Canadian Pacific Enterprises. The company, originally staffed and managed by Cominco, has been independent since January 1978, with its own board of directors, management, staff and employees. The head office is in Calgary, Alberta. The Fording River operations are located in British Columbia, approximately 70 km north of the Crowsnest Pass, near the Alberta/ British Columbia boundary, only 150 km by air and 320 km by road from Calgary.A contract was signed in 1969 with the Japanese steel mills to provide 45. 7 million tonnes of metallurgical coal over fifteen years, commencing in 1972, at an annual rate of 3 .05 million tonnes per year. The mine is presently expanding annual production capacity from the original 3.0 million long tons (3.05 million tonnes) to in excess of 5.0 million tonnes.Concurrent with this production expansion, a vigorous marketing effort has diversified Fording's customers to include additional countries in the Pacific Rim area. Three cleaned coal products are now marketed compared to the single ""standard blend"" product originally shipped to satisfy the Japanese contract. The product specifications are listed in Table I."
