Construction and mining worksites pose unique challenges to workers and equipment operators due to their dynamic and unstructured nature. Narrow haul roads, crowded work spaces and presence of workers and equipment in close proximity, combined with large blind spots and overall poor visibility afforded to operators lead to collisions and run-over-type accidents between equipment, workers, and other entities that may be present on the jobsite. Operations that involve machine-infrastructure interaction, particularly in the case of concealed infrastructure such as excavation and drilling lead to unintended strikes between the equipment?s end-effect or and the infrastructure. Such accident-prone scenarios can be avoided by providing operators with real-time feedback and warnings using 3D visualization and proximity monitoring of the entities present in the equipment?s vicinity. Thus the jobsite in the real world is abstracted and represented in a 3D virtual world. However, this requires the ability to create a seamless link between real-world sensors present on the equipment and/or the jobsite and the virtual environment. This paper describes a non-restrictive acquisition allocation framework that allows position and orientation sensor streams from construction and mining job sites to be used for updating 3D virtual scenes in real-time for providing vital collision avoidance warnings to equipment operators.

The Songwe Hill Rare Earth Element (REE) Project in Malawi is a near surface carbonatite-hosted deposit with synchysite and apatite as the key REE bearing minerals. A strong focus has been placed on understanding the REE mineralogy of the Songwe Hill carbonatite as REE mineralogical characterization is a crucial component at all steps, ranging from exploration to production, in the development of REE deposits. Extensive mineralogical work has been completed at Camborne School of Mines (CSM), Natural History Museum (NHM) London, British Geological Survey (BGS), Nottingham, Aberystwyth University, Wales, Mintek, South Africa, and SGS Inc. Canada (SGS). The following analytical techniques were used: scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron microprobe analysis (EMPA), laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), and QEMSCAN®. The detailed studies have demonstrated that while synchysite is light-REE enriched as expected, apatite, abundant in all stages of carbonatite emplacement at Songwe, is anomalously enriched in mid- to heavy-REE relative to apatite in other carbonatite deposits. The distribution of REE within synchysite and apatite at Songwe has had important implications for the direction of the metallurgical work with respect to the behaviour of light and heavy REE through the flotation and hydrometallurgical stages of the flow sheet.

"Abstract - The Izok Zn-Cu-Pb-Ag volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit is located 265 km south of Kugluktuk (Coppermine), Nunavut Territory, Canada, in the west-central Slave structural province. The Izok deposit is owned 100% by Inmet Mining Corporation and represents one of the largest undeveloped zinc-copper resources in North America. The Izok deposit is hosted within and near the top of a thick sequence of predominantly felsic pyroclastic rocks of late Archean age. The hanging-wall stratigraphy includes additional felsic volcaniclastic rocks, andesitic and basaltic flows, thin sulfide-rich iron formations, and turbiditic sedimentary rocks. The felsic volcanic rocks are intruded by intermediate dikes and sills, followed by gabbroic dikes and sills. Both intrusive suites are interpreted to be volcanic feeders to the overlying flows. All lithologies are subsequently cut by younger, irregular, granitic pegmatite and diabase dikes. The volcanic and sedimentary rocks are regionally metamorphosed to pyroxene hornfels grade. The massive sulfides occur within a large (kilometer-scale) Na-depleted sericitic alteration zone. The immediate footwall and hanging-wall rocks to the deposit are characterized by zones of muscovite- biotite-sillimanite, lesser chlorite-biotite-cordierite, and locally intense silicification and sodium metasomatism. All lithologies have been affected by younger Ca-metasomatism. As currently defined, the Izok deposit comprises a cluster of five complexly zoned composite lenses: the Northwest, North, Central West, Central East, and Inukshuk lenses. The first four lenses are amenable to open-pit mining, whereas the Inukshuk lens will require underground development. The total indicated mineral resource presently stands at 16.5 million tonnes with a grade of 2.2% Cu, 11.4% Zn, 1.1% Pb, and 60 g/t Ag. Inmet Mining Corporation is presently reviewing the economic feasibility of developing the property."

"Shales play a major role in the stability of slopes, both natural and engineered. This paper attempts to provide a review of the state-of-the-art in shale slope stability. The complexities of shale terminology and classification are first reviewed followed by a brief discussion of the important physical and mechanical properties of relevance to shale slope stability. The varied mechanisms of shale slope stability are outlined and their importance highlighted by reference to international shale slope failures. Stability analysis and modelling of anisotropic rock slope masses are briefly discussed and the potential role of brittle rock fracture and damage highlighted. A short review of shale slopes in open pits is presented.INTRODUCTIONShales have been stated to form approximately 58% of sedimentary rock so it is not surprising that they are frequently encountered in both natural and engineered slopes. They represent challenging environments for slope stability due to the wide variation in their engineering properties, their changing behaviour with time due to geomorphic processes and the variation in the failure mechanisms as a function of both stratigraphy and tectonics. An extensive body of literature exists on the terminology and classification relevant to shales; it is not possible in the scope and length of the current paper to review these works in detail and the reader is referred to Farrokhrouz and Asef (2013), Bell (2000) and Goodman (1993) for detailed discussions. It is arguably the case that no universally accepted classification of shales exists today and depending on the field of application the terminology varies widely. Shales in slope stability, for the purpose of this keynote paper, are taken to include material varying in properties from weak rocks to soils and therein lies one of the most challenging aspects in shale slope characterisation for engineering purposes. They have been classified as “rock-like” or “soil-like’, (Underwood 1967) or compacted and cemented, Table 1, Yagiz (2001). Classifications have considered numerous factors including composition, cementation and a wide range of engineering properties.The propensity of shales to degrade with time due to geomorphic processes has resulted in an important aspect in their classification, that is, the attempts to incorporate slaking, durability and swelling and softening behavior through purpose developed testing methods (Gamble 1971, Morgenstern and Eigenbrod, 1974). Figures 1 and 2 show examples of terminology used to describe argillaceous materials and some proposed engineering classification schemes (Grainger 1984 and Bott 1986). Corominas (2014) provides a recent classification of argillaceous rocks and their durability relating five stages of slope deterioration to the texture of the rock on Ternary diagrams. No attempt will be made here to discuss the merits of the proposed terminology and classifications, suffice it to say, that the controversy and flux surrounding these issues is a strong indicator of the complexities in the behavior of these materials. In this paper the author will consider slope stability in the materials indicated in Table 1, Figures 1 and 2 without undue focus on terminology. At the lower strength limit of shales the engineer must design slopes using the principles of soil mechanics which may vary from the simple Mohr Coulomb plasticity constitutive criterion to modified critical state models, some even attempting to incorporate softening behaviour in the weaker clay shale materials. Given the transitional nature of shale materials several workers have treated overconsolidated clays and clay shales using concepts such as peak and residual shear strength, brittleness index and softening. Martin and Stacey (2013) provide a useful review of the importance of weak rocks in open pit mining, with mudrocks as a specific member, and note the importance of delayed failure, progressive failure and loosening in the stability of"

The solvent extraction properties exhibited by some /V,N'-tetrasubstituted malonamides to efficiently and selectively recover iron(III) from concentrated chloride leaching solutions can be found in the recent literature. The iron(III) extractive chemistry exhibited by some of these derivatives is revisited, in order to compare their chemistry with that shown by a few of the new malonamide compounds. The generally good extraction efficiency towards Fe(III), from >4 M hydrochloric acid solutions, and the relative ease of Fe(III) stripping by distilled water are remarkable findings that are confirmed for the malonamide derivatives described in this work. Furthermore, additional data regarding their selectivity towards Fe(III) extraction over several base metal ions and their behavior when subjected to successive Fe(III) extraction-stripping tests are also presented and discussed.

"Abstract - The coalbed methane industry has become a prominent source of domestic natural gas, with its technology having evolved over the past 30 years. Whereas most coalbed methane wells are able to produce without major interruption over their economic lives, wells operating in an underground mining area are subject to being mined-through. If mine-through occurs, the productivity of the well is at least compromised, and may even be terminated. The economic consequences of mine-through may be relatively simple if mineral ownership and extraction rights are common for the coal and coalbed methane. However, if ownership is not common and a superior coalbed methane lease exists, the coalbed methane ownership must be compensated for lost production caused by mine-through. This paper presents a relatively straightforward method to calculate the value of the lost production caused by the mine-through. It uses technology from mining and petroleum engineering, as well as simple economics and financial management techniques.Sommaire - L’industrie de la production de méthane houiller est aujourd’hui une source importante de gaz naturel domestique dont la technologie a considérablement évolué au cours des trente dernières années. Bien que la plupart des puits de méthane houiller peuvent être mis en production durant l’entièreté de leur vie utile sans interruption majeure, les puits implantés en périphérie de mines souterraines sont sujets à être recoupés par ces dernières. Un tel recoupement peut compromettre, ou même mettre fin à la production d'un tel puits. Les conséquences économiques du recoupement par une mine souterraine peuvent être relativement simples quand les droits miniers et les droits d’extraction sont détenus en commun pour le charbon et le méthane houiller. Si toutefois ces droits ne sont pas détenus en commun et qu’il y a eu octroi d’une concession de méthane houiller de qualité supérieure, les détenteurs du méthane houiller doivent être compensés pour la perte de production résultant du recoupement par une mine souterraine. Cet article présente une méthode relativement simple pour calculer la valeur des pertes de production suite au recoupement par une mine souterraine. Cette méthode fait appel aux technologies de l’industrie minière et pétrolière ainsi qu’à des techniques simples d’économie et de gestion financière."

"Ontario and Quebec taxpayers will have to dig deeper into their pockets to pay more tax, according to budget papers tabled in these provinces in May 1993. Individuals will be hardest hit, but corporations will also have to ante up in the face of higher rates, reduced deductions, and new taxes.Up, up, and away...Somewhere in the bleak picture of the 1993 Quebec and Ontario budgets, there is a bit of good news for the mining industry.Careful scrutiny reveals:• Ontario will correct a capital tax provision which inadvertently penalizes flow through share issuers;• Quebec's flow-through incentives will be extended to December 31, 1995; and • both Quebec and Ontario will allow deductions for mine site reclamation payments.The industry may also find some comfort in the fact that Ontario's new corporate minimum tax will be profit-based (unlike the federal minimum tax), so that non-producers should not face a liability for this tax. There is some concern though, about Quebec's announcement that the refundable credit mechanism in the Mining Duties Act will be reviewed."

"Energy efficiency in mining and minerals processing forms part of Mintek’s long-term research strategy which includes a specific programme designed at overcoming the challenges faced by the South African pyrometallurgy industry.The electric smelting industry is currently severely constrained by the global economic downturn as well as by the availability and increasing cost of electricity. Efficient utilisation of electricity through energy recovery systems and improved smelting process flowsheets can significantly contribute towards creating sustainable operations.Apart from efficient engineering design and solid process control, smelting of either cold or hot pre-reduced ores has been shown to decrease furnace electricity consumption by more than 40%. Various methods of solid-state reduction tests have been carried out at Mintek in order to select the most appropriate process option in the context of the South African industry. This paper summarises a subset of the results obtained, specifically on pre-reduction tests done on South African chromite and manganese ore pellets.In this set of tests, it was found that the use of an organic binder, together with B2O3 as flux, promotes manganese ore pre-reduction, but retards the pre-reduction of chromite. By pre-reducing the manganese ore feed, significant cost savings can be achieved in subsequent smelting processes and there is potential to minimise manganese losses as a result of fuming, due to possible lower operating temperatures."

"Preliminary investigations indicate that organic lake sediments offer some potential for gold exploration within the Canadian Shield of northwestern Saskatchewan. It is also apparent that certain precautions must be taken.Gold is primarily related to the organic fraction of the lake sediments, which, although giving consistant Au contents to those sediments, may restrict the dispersion of Au within the lake itself. It may be necessary to carry out selective extractions on the lake sediments to differentiate between Au related to organic sequestration, indicative of hydromorphic and/ or chemical dispersion, and Au related to inorganics, indicative of mechanical dispersion.Lake sediments are probably only of use for very detailed exploration (i.e. every lake). One to three samples per lake should be appropriate, although a single centre-lake organic-rich sediment sample may be adequate in very small lakes. Each lake sediment sample should be analyzed at least twice and the analytical data carefully monitored and evaluated.The use of As in lake sediments as a pathfinder element for gold is applicable in the search for certain types of gold occurrences.Following detailed lake sediment sampling, basal till sampling can possibly be used to localize areas of potential gold with or without base metal mineralization."

THE Wellington Lake power plant of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, about 25 miles from Goldfields, Saskatchewan, is the second hydro-electric project operating in that Province, the first being the Island Falls plant of the Churchill River Power Company which serves the operations of the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company at Flin Flon, Manitoba. The Churchill River project develops 90,000 h.p. at 56-ft. head; the Wellington Lake plant 3,300 h.p. at 75-ft. with pro-vision for an additional 3,300 h.p. unit. Churchill River power is trans-mitted at 110,000 volts over a 58-mile line of steel towers to Flin Flon and an additional 45 miles over a wooden pole-line to Sherritt-Gordon. Our steel tower-line is 22 miles long, and the voltage is 60,000; this choice be-cause certain such equipment was available from Trail. The diversion of 15,000? second-feet at 56-ft. head for 90,000 h. p. at Churchill river dwarfs our 500 second-feet flow at 75-ft. head for 3,300 h.p. In both cases, the main obstacles to be overcome during plant construction were the lack of transport facilities and the short open season. Let it be noted here that this paper deals mainly with those phases of plant construction which were particularly interesting to the writer. With-out these variations from the ordinary routine, this is just another power project whose story is better told by the accompanying charts and pictures. To many members of the Institute it is still just that; but I am writing for those who, like myself, have been too seldom responsible for major under-rakings at an appreciable distance from a railway siding. When it was planned in early 1937 to erect a 1,000-ton mill at our Box mine, both hydro and Diesel power were discussed. With ten years' ore in sight, even an expensive hydro project, such as ours turned out to be, produces kilowatts materially below the 2-cent operating cost of a Diesel plant using fuel-oil at 14 cents a gallon.

Shore Gold Inc. (Shore) is presently designing a diamond processing plant for the Star and the Orion South kimberlite deposits in the Fort à la Corne (FalC) area in central Saskatchewan. The first step in the plant is diamond liberation and occurs in the comminution section. Diamond liberation is the process of breaking up the kimberlite rock, as gently as possible so as not to damage the diamonds. Autogenous grinding mills (AG mills) use a combination of impact crushing, abrasion and attrition to break up the kimberlite. The forces that occur during the actions of abrasion and attrition cause the kimberlites to break up preferentially along lines of weaknesses which offers a ?diamond friendly? method of comminution. Hard competent kimberlite is commonly found in the diatreme zone as well as the root zone of the volcanic pipe and is the source of kimberlite for most of the Southern African diamond mines. Softer kimberlite is typically found in and around the crater area of a volcanic pipe and it is this kimberlite that makes up the majority of kimberlite for both the Star and Orion South deposits. These softer kimberlites can be readily broken up using abrasion and attrition imparted by AG mills. In order for Shore to benefit from the softer kimberlite found in the Star - Orion South diamond project, two large (10.97 m diameter x 7.10 m long) AG mills were designed for the comminution section based on extensive test work and simulations by Metso Minerals (Metso).

"An integrated nickel flash smelter is operated with Peirce-Smith converters at the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter. To improve the partitioning of arsenic between slag waste and matte product, an option to modify the slag–matte chemistry by addition of CaO was analysed. A combination of plant sample analysis, high-temperature laboratory experiments and thermodynamic modeling was carried out to evaluate the process options. The high-temperature experiments involved the re-equilibration of industrial matte-slag samples at 1225 °C and P(SO2) = 0.12 atm, rapid quenching in water, and direct measurement of phase compositions using electron probe X-ray microanalysis (EPMA) and Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LAICPMS). A private thermodynamic database for nickel sulfide smelting and converting was used together with the FactSage thermochemical software package to assist in the analysis of the distribution of elements between slag and matte as a function of CaO addition. The thermodynamic predictions combined with experimental data obtained in this study can be used to characterise the effect of CaO fluxing on the slag–matte thermochemistry during the nickel sulfide converting.INTRODUCTION At the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter (KNS), nickel sulfide concentrate is processed in an Outotec-type flash furnace to produce nickel matte containing +47 wt% Ni. Separation of nickel matte and waste slag from the flash smelting is enhanced through settling in the electric arc -heated zone attached to the flash furnace. The flash furnace matte is further processed in a Peirce-Smith converter to produce Ni-rich matte containing +66 wt% Ni (Crundwell, Moats, Ramachandran, Robinson, & Davenport, 2011). Iron silicate-based slag is used in the converting process at KNS. Most of the arsenic is contained in the final matte and very little of the arsenic partitions into the slag. Previous work by Font et al (Font, Hino, & Itagaki, 2003) shows that the distribution ratio of arsenic between calcium ferrite slag and nickel-matte (LAsslag/matte) is significantly higher than that between iron silicate slag and nickel-matte, where LAsslag/matte = (wt pct As in slag)/{wt pct As in matte} (1)"

"Rio Algom's Stanleigh Mine and Mill Operation Was' officially started up in August 1983. In September 1982, Rio Algom contracted Estonix International Inc. from Lively, Ontario, to develop and implement two innovative programs: (1) Work Renovation Planning, and (2) Systems Performance Training. This paper deals with the development and implementation of these two concepts relative to the plants technology from start-up to present and the exceptional results achieved. This paper discusses how a small but motivated workforce resulted in the smooth transition from startup to full production. It also deals with how these concepts were applied elsewhere in the organization which permitted a successful transition and downsizing of the over-all operation.IntroductionRio Algom Limited produces uranium in Elliot Lake, Ontario. In the late 1970s Rio Algom entered a contract with Ontario Hydro to supply uranium from its Stanleigh property, which had been idle since 1960. The mine was subsequently upgraded, and a new modem mill was designed and built, commencing operation in 1983.From then until September 1990,Rio Algom had three producing mines and mills in the Elliot Lake area. Quirke mill, with a capacity of 6350 tonnes per day, operated continuously from 1968. The Panel mill with a 3000 tonnes per day capacity, operated since 1979. Stanleigh mill continues to operate under long-term contracts, although at a production rate about 25070 lower than its rated capacity of 5000 tonnes per day.Both the Quirke and Panel mills, although not entirely similar, were conventional uranium mills utilizing crushing, grinding, leaching and ion exchange. As such, and in keeping with the traditional management style, there was a rather large mill operating workforce, which utilized a line-of-progression job classification system."

"In this study, the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and thermal conductivity (TC) of shale in two perpendicular directions, vertical and parallel to the bedding of the rock, are firstly measured by experiment. The experimental results show that the CTE of the shale in the vertical direction is 1.69 times as much as that in the parallel direction, while the TC in the parallel direction is 1.83 times larger than that of the vertical direction. Based on the no initial strain assumptions, numerical simulations for the thermal cracking in shale are carried out with the obtained coefficients. Using finite element method and thermal-mechanical coupling theory, two fracture mechanical parameters, KI and J-integral of the shale are also analyzed for the shale thermal fracturing. The simulation results show that both KI and J-integral reach the maximum when the fracturing angle equals to 0° in the shale, namely parallel to the bedding direciton. It is also found that the two fracture parameters decrease with the fracturing angle increasing. Additionally, the thermal fracturing effect of the shale is evaluated under a given scenario. The study is significant for shale oil or gas recovery by in situ pyrolyzing method.INTRODUCTIONOil shale is regarded as a kind of unconventional resource that can contribute to production of shale oil and hydrocarbon gases (Rahm & Dianne, 2011). As is known that there is a large deposit of oil shale in China, and present technology for exploiting oil shale still concentrates on open-pit mining, obtaining shale oil by retorting shale on the ground (Li, Tang, Xue, Zheng, & Du, 2014; Qian, Yin, 2008). However, this technology has a bad effect on the environment and leads to severe resource waste for utilizing oil shale. Exploiting oil shale by in-situ method for ‘green mining’ is widely necessary in China (Kang, Wang, Cao, Liang, Chang, & Liu, 2013; Waters, Dean, Downie, Kerrihard, Austbo, & McPherson, 2009; Zoback, Kohli, Das, & McClure, 2012). One of effective method to exploit shale oil is heating oil shale in-situ underground. For instance, the in-situ conversion process (ICP technique) from Shell Company etc. used a direct heating method, and convectional heating oil shale underground by injecting superheated steam from Mining Technology Institute, Taiyuan University of Technology and constructing horizontal fracture in vertical wellbore from Chevron Company use indirect heating method (Chaudhary, Ehlig, & Wattenbarger, 2011; Hazra, Lee, Economides, & Moridis, 2013; Zhao et al., 2010). The convectional heating method contains complicated procedures with phase transition in double-media of fracture-matrix of oil shale subjected to multi-physical fields coupling including stress, fluid and temperature (Zhao et al., 2010). The characteristics of thermodynamics, solid mechanics and seepage of oil shale have been investigated separately (Hopkins, Rosen, & Hill,1998; Kang, Zhao, & Yang, 2008; Yang, Zhao, Kang, 2010; Zhao, Yang, Feng, Liang, & Kang, 2008; Zhao, Cao, Zhao, Lin, & Wang, 2008). However, it is quite difficult to solve constrained problem of each physical parameter in multi-physical fields coupling for oil shale pyrolysis."

The shortage of freshwater has been a major challenge for mineral flotation in arid areas. When using high salinity water, certain electrolytes are detrimental to flotation while others can improve the flotability of minerals. In this paper, the flotation behaviors and contact angles of pyrite in both Milli-Q water and high salinity water were investigated using different collectors at various pH levels. Results show that the thionocarbamate has a less affinity to pyrite in different solutions under mildly alkaline conditions as compared with potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) and N-isopropoxypropyl-N’-ethoxycarbonyl thiourea (iPOPECTU). At high pH levels, the slime coating on pyrite surfaces, which is caused by colloidal precipitates of magnesium and calcium ions in seawater, was confirmed by SEM, EDX and in-situ zeta potential measurement. The slime coating of colloidal precipitates on mineral surfaces led to low recovery of pyrite at high pH levels. The study of flotation behavior of pyrite in high salinity water improves our fundamental understanding of mineral flotation in seawater.

"Mine hoists are built to handle a certain nameplate capacity; they are specified and designed according to the required duty. However, as production capacity increases in other parts of an operation, the hoist capacity can become the critical constraint. Such a situation occurred at Lundin Mining’s Neves-Corvo operation. This paper examines how each component of the existing hoisting system was examined and optimized. Through a combination of engineering study and hoist simulations, the annual hoisting capacity was improved by 24% through increases in payload capacity and available hoisting time combined with a reduction in cycle time, while no changes were made to the hoist motor, drum or headframe. The additional payload capacity was achieved by reducing the mass of the hoist ropes and skips, and improving load monitoring systems. The cycle time was reduced through the shortening of the creep distances and increased availability through the installation of a shaft collar safety platform, alternative guide rope bushes, and superior liners for both the skips and underground measuring flasks. Enhanced cooling of the hoist electrical system was also incorporated to increase hoist availability by reducing downtime during hot summer months. The changes will increase the capacity from the current 4.5 mega tonnes per annum (Mtpa) to a planned 5.6 Mtpa and are being implemented over a 2-year period whilst maintaining the mine production during the upgrade work. INTRODUCTION Neves-Corvo Mine Neves-Corvo is primarily a copper and zinc mine producing copper, zinc and lead concentrates. The operation is owned and operated by Somincor, the Portuguese subsidiary of Lundin Mining. Located in the Alentejo district of southern Portugal, the operation is situated approximately 15 km southeast of the town of Castro Verde, where summer temperatures can reach as high as 45ºC, and approximately 220 km southeast of Lisbon. The principal means of mine access is via a ramp from surface, with the vertical shaft used to hoist ore and waste from the 700 m level, while conveyors descend from the 700 m level to transport ore and waste up from the deeper levels of the mine. The mine is highly mechanized and several different stoping methods are employed, with the most significant being bench-and-fill and drift-and-fill. The Neves-Corvo mine currently exploits five orebodies: Neves, Corvo, Graça, Zambujal and Lombador for copper and zinc-lead ores which are processed in one of two plants. All the orebodies are currently exploited over their full elevation with the exception of Lombador which is only mined down to the 220 m level, approximately the top 50% of the orebody, known as Lombador Phase 1."

Wear has been estimated to cost the Canadian mining/mineral processing industry over $15 billion per year mainly for repair/replacement of worn parts in 2013. The associated production loss is difficult to quantify but add considerably to the problem. The Canadian oil sands sector which has to deal with extremely abrasive and erosive solids, has traditionally incurred extremely severe and often unique attack. Demonstrable progress in mitigating the wear problems has been achieved through materials development, more informed materials selections, and better component and operation condition designs. An integral contributor to these advances is a long-term collaborative research partnership between NRC and the mining/supply industry. In this paper, this continuing collaboration will be described. A main focus is to identify degradation mechanisms occurring in the most severe and important service applications and to correlate these findings with laboratory test data. Relevant abrasion and erosion (often combined with corrosion) properties have been established and correlated with composition and microstructures for all classes of resistant materials ranging from relatively soft elastomers to ultra-hard ceramics. A comprehensive wear properties database has been compiled. This capability has been instrumental in facilitating the development of improved materials, optimizing materials fitness/selection for service, wear failure analysis, and quality assurance.

"Of the 135 current or past-producing 'gold-only' mines in the Superior Province of the Canadian Shield which have produced more than 100,000 tons of ore, the 33 mines which have produced one million ounces or more of gold have accounted for over 84o/o of the total production of 137 million ounces. The published literature on these 33 deposits was reviewed in order to determine the geological setting of the mineralization on a regional (mining camp) and local (mine) scale. The dominant rock types underlying the mining camps are mafic, variolitic, tholeiitic volcanic rocks with a significant ultramafic (komatiitic) component, and clastic and/ or exhalative sedimentary rocks. Felsic volcanic rocks are generally subordinate. Most mining camps are located at or near the top of the mafic-ultramafic sequence, and generally there is a major sedimentary-volcanic contact present which may be 1) a stratigraphic superposition of volcanic and sedimentary units, 2) a rapid, along-strike gradation from dominantly volcanic to dominantly sedimentary units due to facies change, or to the formation of structurally controlled sedimentary basins during volcanism, or 3) frequently (at 40o/o of the camps) a juxtaposition of sedimentary and volcanic sequences across a major fault zone or 'break', which in many instances may represent a reactivated, syn-volcanic basin-margin fault.In contrast to the regional setting, on a local or mine scale over 90o/o of the 33 mines contain felsic intrusions and/ or extrusions within mine workings. The felsic rocks may be quartzbearing (commonly quartz-feldspar porphyries) or dominantly quartz-free (commonly feldspar porphyry syenites or monzonites), and appear to have been emplaced in two different depth-zone environments: an epizonal intrusive environment, and a volcanic vent environment. Although the distinction between epizonal intrusive and volcanic intrusive-extrusive rocks is uncertain in many deposits, the two are tentatively separated on the basis of the grain size of the rock matrix (medium to coarse grained vs aphanitic to fine grained), homogeneity (multi-phased and/ or compositionally zoned vs compositionally homogeneous), and the shape and relationship to stratigraphy of the igneous body (circular or oval in cross section, and cutting the stratigraphy at a low angle vs lenticular and either stratiform or cutting the stratigraphy at a high angle). In addition, felsic intrusions of the volcanic environment commonly grade into tuffs or breccias of extrusive origin, whereas epizonal intrusions do not.Stratiform ore zones of possible exhalative sedimentary origin appear to be confined to deposits in which volcanic felsic rocks are present, and are absent from deposits in which only epizonal felsic intrusions are present. Pervasive carbonate- rich alteration, commonly in roughly stratabound zones of regional extent, and carbonate-rich chemical sedimentary rocks are present in over three-quarters of the deposits containing quartz-bearing felsic volcanic rocks, but are much less common in deposits with quartz-free felsic volcanic rocks. The host sequences of epizonal felsic intrusions which are quartzfree are more commonly sedimentary than those of quartz-bearing epizonal felsic intrusions.Quartz, carbonate minerals, arsenopyrite, scheelite, tourmaline and Cr-muscovite ('juchsite') are the most common mineralogical associates of gold. Arsenopyrite is essentially restricted to the volcanic environment, occurring in about twothirds of the deposits with quartz-bearing felsic volcanic rocks and less than half of the deposits with quartz-free volcanic rocks. Tourmaline, on the other hand, is almost ubiquitous in deposits associated with epizonal intrusions and also occurs in about two-thirds of the deposits associated with quartz-bearing felsic volcanic rocks, but in only one of the eight deposits associated with quartz-free felsic volcanic rocks.
