The procedure for operation of deluge systems installed in road tunnels is still a subject of debate. The work undertaken in this paper assists in the understanding of the effects of deluge in road tunnels, and thus aims to help inform the development of operational policy. Analysis was undertaken using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations to help explore the deluge interaction with the tunnel ventilation (including smoke exhaust) and combustion products. It was found, for the scenarios considered, that: Deluge activation can decrease the required critical velocity for smoke backlayering, and this in turn can improve the effectiveness of a smoke exhaust system.The dominant parameter for deluge effectiveness is the vehicle configuration, with shielded scenarios (such as a fire in the passenger compartment) showing almost no water reaching the fire. The water delivery rate (5 mm/min versus 10 mm/min) has only a minor effect on the smoke duct damper inlet temperatures and downstream smoke temperatures for small fires (5 MW). For large fires (50 MW) the higher water delivery rate gives slightly improved performance (lower damper inlet temperatures and lower downstream smoke temperatures). A one-dimensional transient tunnel model incorporating different operational and deluge response policies (ie deluge activation times) was developed. It was used to examine the influence of different operational parameters on life safety risk and tunnel damage risk. It was found, for the scenarios considered, that: The life safety risk for different scenarios has a sensitivity to deluge activation policy with the case of delaying the deluge activation for a long time giving the worst outcomes. However, the most critical parameters for life safety risk are operator response time (for all response activities, not just deluge) and the type of fire (configuration, size and growth rate).There is a reduction in risk of tunnel damage when the deluge is activated earlier, although the fire configuration (ie whether or not the seat of the fire can be reached) has the greatest influence on the outcome. It is concluded that the deluge activation policy should be case-dependent. It will depend on the tunnel, the safety systems provided, and most particularly the vehicles involved. The current policy in Australian tunnels is for manual activation of the deluge by the tunnel operator as soon as practical after the fire is confirmed (see also PIARC, 2007). This is a good policy. However, future work may be helpful to improve the skills of operators to make the best judgement as to when deluge should be activated, balancing all risks. This work could include research to further the understanding of deluge and fire in road tunnels, training programs and consideration of historical fire events.

Ventilation, air leakage, and various cutting, loading and support movement operations all have a role in dust distribution on longwall faces as shown by the results of a large number of dust measurements on different longwall operations in the Bulli seam on the South Coast. It is concluded that leakage of air on the face has demonstrable mfluence on the exposure of the shearer operator to dust level. It is possible to calculate dust generated by various elements of a rrurung operation on the face from a single point measurement. In the examination of dust deposition from the source of generation as a function of particle size, it is found that respirable dust can remain airborne over long distances without any significant drop in concentration, if unobstructed.

The role of metals in the economy is discussed with regard to the flow of metals through to final demand and is illustrated by data for seven metals. Factors influencing the changing pattern of metal consumption are described, including relative prices. A des- cription and discussion of current metal demand forecasting methodologies precedes a discussion firstly of broad economic trends and secondly of the evolving pattern of metal consumption relative to GDP (metal consumption intensity), as technology and other factors change and as economies mature. The tendency for metal consumption intensity to plateau and decline when economies reach a certain region of per capita GDP, following a rapid rise early in the industrial- ization process, is shown in comparative data for seven metals and six countries.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Martabe gold mine is Indonesia’s largest precious metals-only producer and is also one of few significant hard rock mine developments in the past 15 years. Martabe is located on the west coast of the island of Sumatra in the North Sumatra province. The mine commenced operation in mid-2012, producing over 280 koz of gold and 1.5 Moz of silver in its first full year of production.Martabe consists of a cluster of six currently identified high-sulfidation epithermal deposits. The deposits lie in a north–south corridor with an approximately 8 km strike length and 1.5 km width. The total Measured, Indicated and Inferred Mineral Resource Estimate of the deposits is currently 8.2 Moz of gold and over 75 Moz of silver.The exploration program at Martabe has added more than 2 Moz of gold and 15 Moz of silver to the Mineral Resource estimates (Measured, Indicated and Inferred categories) since G-Resources acquired the project in 2009. This has been achieved at an average cost of US$17 in exploration expenditure per ounce of resource added, which includes helicopter-supported drilling programs in rugged forest terrain.The factors that led to this exploration success at Martabe include: in the first instance and most importantly, recognition of the geological potential of the mineralised system continually updating and improving ‘orebody knowledge’ and applying new ideas to the exploration program ongoing engagement and consultation by world professionals with geological expertise in similar systems ongoing executive management support for the program the high quality of work completed by previous owners a strong focus on quality control, staff development and operational safety, with the JORC Code (in particular Table 1 of the Code) as the underlying basis for quality control continual and positive engagement with government, community and other external stakeholders.This paper will discuss in detail the first of these two factors. The ground vibration produced by the bench blasts of a single hole and a row of two or three holes is recorded in an iron mine. Using the seismic signal generated by a single-hole shot as the source function, we have developed a computer program of a simulating ground vibration by bench blast. The reasonable delay time of blast in the iron mine has been discussed tentatively with the Fourmap invented by Anderson, D.A. The seismograms measured from the single-row blasts of two or three holes have shown the method of simulating vibration is feasible on the whole. For large scale production blasts, a combination of the vibration simulation and the high-speed photograph is used to choose the delay Time.

Conversion to trolley assist is a means of minimizing diesel fuel consumption, which in many mining situations offers a rapid payback of capital investment plus the inherent flexi- bility and maneuverability of truck shovel op- eration. Whendiesel electric truck shovel mining opera- tion with trolley assist is compared to alter- native mining methods such as conveyor systems, the trolley assist system can be easily justi- fied in terms of return on investment, payback and increased productivity. A review of present technology, performance requirements and past experience in the min- ing industry has led to the development of a trolley assist system for diesel electric haulage trucks which, is proven in the mining environment, offers significant reduction in fuel consumption and increased productivity.

In the new refinery, at the works of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters Proprietary Limited, situated at Port Pirie, South Australia, the refining routine is similar to that carried on in the old one in that bullion is progressively refined first for arsenic and antimony, then for copper and gold, then for silver, and finally for zinc. However, actual procedure differs in that each refining operation is now conducted continuously, whereas in the old refinery intermittent batch treatment was practised.The early experimental work was concerned solely with the development of the continuous desilverising process, which, in addition to continuous treatment, embraces the novel feature of conjugate solution formation with consequent production of a silver product relatively high in silver and low in lead.

Feasibility is a value improvement process for projects. At any stage in project development, a feasibility study can be undertaken, but although the scope generally remains unchanged the extent of detail and level of accuracy usually increases with time. The main scope elements are a business definition, project description and an execution plan. The studies are designed to assess the potential of the project and to secure funding for on-going examination. Invariably, the investigations loop back to earlier stages to establish more appropriate development criteria but a critical stage is reached when a project construction decision is requested. This feasibility study requires very detailed presentation and analysis to a higher accuracy for the owner(s) and their potential lender(s).

The process of resource estimation of large precious metal deposits is illustrated by reference to major deposits now being mined or developed by Placer.The estimation procedure commences with building an appropriate model of the mineralization and proceeds through steps of data validation and geostatistical studies. It is important that the geologists most familiar with a deposit be involved with all stages of the estimate, and also prepare a manual estimate used to validate the kriged resource.Resource estimates are major exercises taking many man-months of work. The most time consuming part of this is usually construction of an appropriate three dimensional geological model. The data base for the resource calculations must be complete and checked for accuracy. The most appropriate estimation method must be selected.

The overland conveyor at the Los Pelambres mine in Chile is designed to move 8700 t/h of material over 12 km at a speed of 6 m/s while descending 1400 m. The conveyor, which is divided into three segments, is equipped with a braking system that must bring it to rest without producing excessive stresses in the conveyor belt. Retardation and gently stopping a mass of 250 t requires retardation times in the order of 60 seconds. Brakes that can provide this performance require sophisticated controls as well as very high heat absorption capacity. This paper describes the thermal analysis of the braking system, which required the use of novel materials to meet the arduous duties imposed on the callipers and discs.

The strength and deformation properties of a rock mass are important parameters influencing the design of civil and mining excavations or structures. The mechanical behaviour of jointed rock masses are controlled by the characteristics of discontinuities and the strength of intact rock bridges between discontinuities. To date, analytical, empirical and experimental methods have not captured the key mechanisms controlling the mechanical properties of actual rock masses with non-persistent joints. The emergence of the synthetic rock mass (SRM) in 2007 provides a promising approach for this purpose. In this paper a rock mass with non-persistent joints is analysed with the SRM model based on PFC3D. The influence of joint geometrical parameters on the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), rock mass deformation modulus (Em) and failure mode is studied. Joint parameters include joint orientation, persistency, spacing and step angle. Prismatic numerical samples with dimensions 300 mm × 150 mm × 50 mm were generated and a sensitivity analysis of each joint parameter on UCS and Em was undertaken. The results show that of the parameters tested, joint orientation has the greatest influence on UCS. Minimum UCS occurs when the angle between the major principal stress and joint surface is approximately 60°. The joint step angle was found to have a significant effect on failure mode and a joint step angle of 90° is the most favourable joint orientation for step-path failure. The importance of joint step angle is highlighted in the discovery of a failure mode bifurcation point at joint step angles of 60° and 90° for joint orientations of 75° and 90°, respectively. For these parameters the failure mode transitions from block rotation to a new failure mode where the coalescence of cracks results in the formation of new small regularised blocks.

Costain Resources Limited operates two open cut coal mines in the Hunter Valley coalfields of New South Wales, Ravensworth Mine and Warkworth Mine. The location of the Ravensworth operation is shown in Figure 1. In the case of the Ravensworth Mine, Costain Australia is essentially a contract miner and is contracted to supply coal to Pacific Power (previously The Electricity Commission of New South Wales), on contracts won through a tender system. Due to the existing infrastructure and the lease area that associated with the contract, the mining strips at Ravensworth South have a maximum strike length of 1500 metres. This paper deals with the methods of scheduling used to overcome the challenge of mining the short strike length, multi-seam deposit at Ravensworth South.

This paper presents a method of measuring field power consumption of shearers and deriving specific energy consumption versus shearer haulage speed performance curves. A description of a computer program which simulates the cutting action of a shearer drum is presented. A comparison between the field specific energy curves and the computer simulation results is made. The simulation results compare well with the field data where all the coal seam is being cut by the shearer. The computer simulation results give back-calculated field pick force cutting characteristics, which allow the performance of the shearer to be predicted for other operating conditions, e.g. effect of changes to pick lacing, effect of changing the drum rotational speed, allows the calculation of power requirements for a particular production rate.

Whilst decisions to commit projects have traditionally been heavily influenced by hurdle rates for d.c.f. analysis, it is suggested that evaluation of competitors' costs may be a desirable additional tool.The MICAS system developed over the past four years is described. This computer system uses standard costs modified by District and Mine factors to allow estimation of individual mine costs. The data base contains more than 15,000 items of data and more than 6000 costs are calculated.Recent applications include use for competitive analysis, predictive analysis, statistical analysis, and comparative assessments with scopes ranging from a few mines to the whole Australian export industry. Some areas where care is necessary are outlined and potential further uses are discussed.

The flame front is a narrow region in the iron ore sintering bed where coke particles combust. The maximum flame front temperature is as high as 1400°C. At high temperatures, the sinter mix components react to form melts, which facilitates material coalescence and the formation of dense sinter particles. It is well-established that flame front speed is an important factor influencing sinter productivity, sinter quality and fuel rate. In this work, the effect of suction, coke addition and mix moisture on flame front speed was studied in a pilot-scale sinter pot and also using the outputs of a recently developed theoretical model, which takes into account most of the significant physicochemical processes in sintering. Airflow through the bed has a large influence on flame front speed. A power law relationship between these two parameters means that increasing sintering airflow rate will lead to increased flame front speed, but the increases become smaller at higher airflow rates. Sinter pot test results showed that increasing coke addition decreased green bed permeability and increased flame front temperature, which resulted in increased flame front resistance and decreased flame front speed. Studies also showed that green bed properties are sensitive to sinter mix moisture level. Stability control plays a prominent part in the planning and execution of coal winning in the deep open cuts in the Latrobe Valley operated by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV). Different stability mechanisms affect the individual overburden and coal faces. These are the classical rotational slip in overburden and the three-dimensional tetra- hedral wedge or planar block slip in the coal faces. The stability of the overall batters is affected by the so-called "block sliding" mechanism, which is unique in Australian open cuts. The basal stability of the open cuts is affected by pressure from water in confined aquifers underlying the coal being excavated. This paper describes each of these mechanisms and the current monitoring and con- trol techniques practised by the SECV.

Despite extensive oil exploration in"Western Australia over the past 12 years no commercial oil fields have yet been found. A total ' of 66 test wells have been drilled throughout the State but only Rough Range No.s.. 1 and 1A have produced oil in significant quantities. Active oil exploration is now in progress in the" Canning, Carnarvon, Perth, Bonaparte Gulf and Officer Basins. Test wells have been drilled' in ,all of these except the Officer Basin, where the subsurface stratigraphy is still unknown. Large .areas of the other four have hot yet been drilled. It, is- probable that. commercial oil deposits will eventually be found' in these basins as they contain thick marine sequences, and have structures 'suitable for.,the. entrapment of oil. .

The Cooperative Research Centres (CRC) Program was established and is supported by the Australian Government at a total cost of $140 million per year. Six of these centres have been established to help Australia's mineral industry: three in exploration, one in mining and mineral processing and two in extractive metallurgy. Since the CRC Program has now been in operation for five years, it is a good time to ask whether the minerals industry is being served adequately by these centres. In this paper, the performance of one CRC, namely the A J Parker Cooperative Research Centre for Hydrometallurgy, will be discussed in terms of the objectives of the CRC Program. As will be shown, the Parker Centre has made considerable progress since its establishment in 1992.

The critical role of representative sampling is featured and illustrated by selected examples from the geosciences and beyond.
