Recent trends in flotation technology are briefly reviewed. These show that considerable development has been made as the operators, suppliers and technologists have responded to the challenges of the industry. Most of these advances have been based on empirical and phenomenological methods. There is a considerable opportunity to make further advances through a more fundamental, scientific approach. Some of this work is discussed and, although progress is being made on this front, industrial uptake has been somewhat slow. A number of specific issues facing the industry are discussed.

Therefore it is important to set up data acquisition processes with respect to maximisation of overall profitability and resource utilisation. Laverton Gold NL (Laverton) is the first junior Australian mining company to establish a viable mining operation in Indonesia. It successfully commissioned the Rawas plant in Sumatra this year with an average anticipated production of 85 000 ounces of gold equivalent (as gold and silver) per year, a feat of which Laverton is justifiably proud.Working in Indonesia and South-East Asia generally is very stressful for juniors and stretches human and financial resources to the limit - more so than in medium to large companies which can absorb the workload in-house more effectively.

As South African gold mines go deeper, and improved and more uniform working condi- tions are required, ever larger amounts of refrigeration are needed. At the same time new and more suitable cooling equipment is becoming available for use with new mining layouts as well as on existing shaft systems. The advent of the large diameter rotor screw compressor has meant that there is now a machine available with great flexibility in performance and construction for efficient underground use. The first installation using this type of machine is described.

Recovery of metallic values from lean-grade raw materials as well as from secondary/intermediate industrial products is of immense importance to a country like India which is not endowed with extensive sources of copper and nickel. The results of a few studies carried out in this area are described in Part-I and Part-II in this article. A novel anode casting system, specially designed for a small copper refinery which had been set up to produce copper wire bars/rods is described briefly in Part-III.

All facets of current practices of cable dowelling at The Zinc Corporation, Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited are re- viewed. This includes materials specific- ations, installation practices and design pro- cedures. Cable dowelling for cut and fill stoping, square set timber stoping, longhole open stoping and level reinforcement is considered. Installation is simple and can be mechanised to eliminate heavy lifting. Quality control is essential for optimum performance of the re- inforcement. Design patterns must consider the mining method, reinforcement economics, acceptable stability standards and mine production priorities.

The Kalkadoon Granite is regarded as composite in character with at least two different phases. The older phase is considered older than the sediments of the Western Geosyncline, and the younger phase is considered younger than the sediments of the Western Geosyncline.Consequently, the older phase could be a time equivalent of the Ewen Granite, whereas the younger phase could not. An age of 1760 million years seems plausible for the older phase, and an age of 1540 millionyears seems appropriate for the younger phase.

The Mineral Sands Mining Industry in New South Wales is successfully working within the State's environmental framework and is meeting; community requirements and expectations concerned with the environment and mine rehab- ilitation. I lamata is within the Morobe Goldfield (7¦ 25' S, 146¦ 39' E) on the Wau (SB 55-14),1:250,000 scale map sheet (Fig 1). The deposit is 13 km SW of Wau, within the headwaters of the Upper Watut River, at an average elevation of 2000 m. The steep mountainous terrain is covered by dense tropical rainforest and access is by helicopter or by foot track. The deposit has been described previously by Wells and Young (1991) and 1)enwer. Leach and Mowat (1995). Data collected to late 1996 have been used to estimate an Inferred Resource of 9.2 Mt at 3.1 g/t gold using a cutoff of 0.5 g/t. This contains a high grade portion for which an Inferred Resource of 1.2 Mt at 9.7 grt gold has been estimated using a 5.0 g/t cutoff.

Industrial flotation plant design is a complex process involving many aspects, one of which is the use of pilot-scale plants to test industrial plant flow sheets. Once test work on a pilot-scale has been performed, scale-up of these results to the full-scale plant must be performed. This paper describes scale-up test work performed on the Floatability Characterisation Test Rig (FCTR). The FCTR is a self-contained, highly instrumented mobile pilot plant designed to determine flotation model parameters and to develop and validate flotation plant modelling, scale-up and simulation methodologies.

Battle Mountain Gold Company's Paj ingo Mine is the first gold mine developed by the Company in Australia. The Mine located in northern Queensland commenced operations in September 1987. The high grade epithermal orebody is selectively mined and processed through a conventional carbon in leach/carbon in pulp (CIL/CIP) plant at a rate of 200000 tonnes per annum. In 1988 it produced 61000 oz gold and 152000 oz silver. Inadequate preoperational development of non technical management and organisational functions often leads to inefficiencies that last well into the operation. The Pajingo experience in this regard is oaTple ented by those from a number of other recently commissioned small operations. A checklist is discussed to assist any future preoperational group in focussing their attention into areas that seem to be of secondary importance at the time but often have a significant impact on overall management efficiency later.

Within the Mt Whaleback open cut mine the integrity of the final pit wall is achieved through careful rock slope design, use of rock reinforecement technology where marginal stability exists and use of controlled blasting techniques and excavation practices. By reducing the effective density of ANFO explosive within blastholes to around 0.2 glcm', and developing standard blast pattern designs for various rock types, blast damage to pit walls has been minimised. Accurate geological prediction is necessary for optimum blast design. Controlled blasting is undertaken where blasting occurs within 90 m of the designed final batter crest and hole by hole assessment of final limit blast patterns is undertaken before pattern charging. Shovels and trucks remove the bulk of blasted and dozed rock material, but due to the mine's variable pit wall slope configuration, bulldozer excavation of some critical design batters has been successfully Implemented.

Qiagong skarn iron (copper) deposit is located in Xietongmen County of Tibet, China (N 29¦52Æ14.9ö, E 88¦24Æ10.3ö). It is situated at the middle-western Gangdese porphyry copper-belt. Mineralisation is related to a Himalayan porphyry intrusion, with the mineralised body occurring at the contact zone between the Tertiary Takena Formation carbonate rocks and Himalayan monzonitic granite porphyry. The melt, melt-fluid and fluid inclusions were observed in early quartz, with most abundant fluid inclusions in quartz, calcite and garnet from the skarn. The geology and inclusion assemblage show a close relationship between iron (copper) mineralisation and a Himalayan porphyry intrusion. Based on preliminary inclusion studies, this paper discussed the characteristics, evolution of ore-forming fluid and affiliation to the Himalayan porphyry intrusion. There appears to have been a swing away from the study of mathematics, the physical sciences, foreign languages and the classical humanities subjects by many students in high schools in Victoria. The same trend is believed to be occurring in other states as well. This has the direct result of many students entering tertiary studies inadequately prepared academically. This is particularly true in engineering and commerce. The position as far as postgraduate training in the areas of concern to the minerals industry is critical with almost no Australian nationals undertaking advanced technological studies.

Acid rock drainage (ARD) derived from sulphide oxidation and the associated metal leaching is the most significant environmental issue facing the mining industry today. Under given hydrological and biogeochemical conditions, the local geology and mineralogy largely control the formation of ARD. The involvement of a geologist is therefore essential in minesite ARD assessment and prevention. The relevant tasks that a mine geologist may undertake at three major phases of a mining project are briefly described. Additional knowledge that a mine geologist should acquire in order to achieve proficiency in ARD assessment is also suggested.

The kinetics of chlorination of alumina and bauxite with CO/CI2 mixtures were studied in the range 300-1100°C. The temperature of prior calcination is critical in determining the reaction rates. An optimum chlorination temperature in the range 600°C-750°C was demonstrated such that there is no increase in reaction rates with increasing temperature. This lack of rate sensitivity to rising temperature is largely a function of the influence of gaseous diffusion gradients in the porous alumina together with a progressive decrease in surface area.

With constantly rising energy costs it is ever more important that we look at ways of im- proving comminution efficiency both in terms of power consumed as well as capital costs required for purchasing and installing equipment. I intend to show that commonly used appli- cation criteria, which is presently accepted for designing crushing and screening plants, need drastic revision if it is to be used to accura- tely design, predict and refine performance in new and existing facilities. Unless we can calculate performance accurately, we cannot minimise capital investment and maximize Profitability.

Information is a key ingredient for successful mineral exploration and development. Whether identifying potential exploration localities from a map, interpreting technical reports or searching a register for operators past and present, the common aim is a parcel of information from which the enquirer can make a decision. Traditional information gathering often requires days or weeks of manual research, studying maps, files, reports etc, before consolidating the results into an investment proposal. In recent times, such methods have largely been replaced by Information Technology, making the process much faster, easier and more centralised. However, notwithstanding some very successful technology implementations, the general rush to computerise everything in sight has left many organisations struggling to cope with the management of large volumes of diverse information. Information management is now recognised as the most important factor in determining the success of information technology implementation. The Northern Territory Department of Mines and Energy (DME) has established a detailed information management strategy to underpin the rapid advance of computer technology within the organisation. A broad base of timely and reliable information is gradually becoming more accessible. It is envisaged that the availability of combined spatial, textual and scientific information will provide a sound basis for decision-making within the Department and the mining industry at large. Although information held by DME will be available at all times (24 hours on-line), its security and confidentiality will be guaranteed. The production of the DME system is aimed at satisfying the corporate objective to facilitate and promote mineral exploration and development. This paper outlines some current developments in the system.

Declining from surface provides access, haulageway, ventilation and provision for ser- vices for stoping and development. Three boom jumbos and 3.8 m3 capacity diesel loaders are used in decline development, the majority of which is driven at a gradient of 1 in 9. Primary ventilation is drawn from the mine through raisebored airways and high pressure contra rotating fans provide secondary ventil- ation. To meet schedules a special decline crew was formed on similar lines to a mining con- tractor. The basis of payment for the mining party was changed and the net effect was to accelerate development. Ground conditions demand constant support and this is achieved with chemical anchor rock bolts, multistrand grouted bolts and shotcrete. Major local shear zones are encountered and when they are to be driven through, a combina- tion of the above methods, involving a spiling technique, is used.
