This presentation discusses a water filtration technology termed Fabric Media that is somewhat novel to the Australian market place and reports several recent mining industry installations. Like many novel household cleaning products, the Fabric Media technology applies the science of active washable micro fibres as the means of capturing contaminant solid particles. The simple Fabric Media water filtration product offers several attractive attributes when compared to the more traditional media bed filtration processes such as sand filters, and barrier filters such as micro membranes. A micro fibre based filtration media enables both superior adsorption for the contaminant and wash ability. Stronger adsorption capture enables a much higher flux and greater solids loading density for the filtration task, meaning that lower cost and smaller footprint equipment is available. For Fabric Media water filters, a textile weave is selected that minimises the flow backpressure for a given particle size separation. Thus for an equivalent filtration performance this provides a much lower operating energy requirement, generally between 50 and 80 per cent less than for a sand filter. A Fabric Media is not abrasive to itself or to the filter tank. The filtration performance remains constant and predictable. The equipment life is much longer and the asset value of the new filtration equipment should maintain throughout the project life. Fibres are extremely mechanically robust and chemically inert. Fabric Media survives repetitive exposure to a rapid mechanical washing event providing high wash efficiency with minimum equipment off-line time for the backwash. Dislodging captured contaminants by a high-speed mechanical agitation enables a minimum off-line time during backwash events. The vigorous backwash destroys adhering flocculant and eliminates the formation of mud balls, which can permanently foul sand filters. The mechanical agitation wash of the Fabric Media water filter ensures complete removal of grease and biofilm, which can adhere and block a membrane surface. In comparison to sand filters and micro filtration membranes, the Fabric Media product is applicable to a significantly wider range of solids concentrations without permanent damage. The technology is very forgiving to excursion in plant control and is therefore considered a very operator-friendly concept.

This paper looks at two ways to estimate the bulk mineralogy of the rocks for assay intervals. The aim is to find an efficient indicator of the most common minerals in the rock. Phase (modal) analysis has traditionally been done using visual methods such as point counting and image analysis. A modern version of this process is the X-ray point counting routine using the SEM-EDS based software. These methods are too slow and expensive for routine analysis of bulk sample mineralogy at the normal assay spacing.Two sources of data were considered that provide information that can be used to determine the mineral abundance in assay samples. The most widely applied method is (semi-) quantitative X-ray diffraction (QXRD). The QXRD method is most applicable to major minerals and has limited application to minerals at low abundance. The nominal detection limit is 0.5 per cent. Values below five per cent have large errors. A second, less common, method is calculation of mineralogy from chemical assay data. Conversion of chemical analyses to mineralogical analyses depends on the unique chemical composition of each mineral. Elements only found in one mineral are easily accounted for, but many compositions are ambiguous. Deciding on the actual mineralogy is not simple. Recalculation of mineral mode from chemical analyses is more accurate than QXRD when the correct minerals, and mineral compositions, are known.Where only a few QXRD analyses are available they can be used to setup a protocol for calculation of mineralogy from assay data. Linear programming works well in this environment. The best results are obtained when both H2O and CO2 are directly measured. Loss-on-ignition (LOI) should be included if these are not available.Where both QXRD and chemical analysis are available for all samples, the best results are obtained using the least squared method to merge the data sets assuming QXRD has much higher analytical errors than chemical assays. The combined method provides more robust results because the high abundance minerals are controlled by the QXRD measurements while the chemical assays improve the precision for low abundance minerals

A short discussion of the salient aspects of a dispersed flow model in relation to the gas flow in blast furnaces is given. The use of the theory in assessing vessel performance is mentioned. Tracer results of a blast furnace (688 m3) from three furnace levels and different radial positions are analysed and results presented as D/ud values. The significance of the shapes of experimental tracer curves are included and comparison is made with results obtained on other furnaces.

Raiseboring is a technique that has become popular in modem mining engineering since the early 1960s. A study has been undertaken at the University of Queensland to determine important factors affecting the optimum diameter of raisebored shafts, excluding local parameters such as the maximwn excavation size that a particular rock type can safely accommodate.This model is used to examine each of these factors and the results indicate that the optimum diameter for raisebored shafts is generally between four and six metres.

This paper describes the principle of cut-and-break rock excavation, in which rock is first undercut, and the undercut material is subsequently broken free by a wedging action. The current work on cut-and-break using the large rock cutting test rig at the Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment (CMTE) is outlined, and suggestions are made as to the potential advantages of cut-and-break roadheading, particularly in excavating short tunnels in hard rock in an urban environment.

The approach is an evolving one and is based on experience gained over the past five years undertaking environmental and social impact assessment for a range of mining and other projects. A study was made of the instrumentation and technique of atomic absorption spectroscopy developed by Walsh of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Australia.The method was evaluated for the determination of silver in lead sulphide concentrate. The precision of the procedure developed is equal to that of the uncorrected fire assay method and the accuracy is greater.Brief mention is made of the use of this technique for the determination of silver and other elements in ores and concentrator products.

The Department of Resource Industries regulates and oversees safety and environmental standards for the mining and related industries in Queensland, and provides scientific support through its effort in the geosciences.The geoscientific data base accumulated over more than 120 years is very large. Therefore, accessibility to and utilisation of the data base in the most effective manner is an issue to be addressed in terms of modern information technology. The Department has developed a strategy whose implementation is progressing rapidly.

The basic concept of auger mining is to extract coal beyond the economic limits of surface mining technology by drilling holes of an appropriate diameter size into the exposed seam of the highwall as deep as is technically, economically and operationally feasible. This method of mining is used at the final highwall of typical surface mining operations. This paper describes the auger mining systems and discusses the methods to increase the coal recovery in auger mining from a field trial in Australia.

This paper firstly examines the pollu- tion potential of burning colliery wastes. A comparison of two means of estimating the pro- pensity for coal to combust spontaneously is next presented. The use of microwaves, as a new procedure, is discussed in detail, while a comparison of the results is made with a modi- fied adiabatic technique. A number of coals that are known to combust spontaneously was tested, as were some coals that are not consi- dered to have self heating potential.

The Palmarejo, Guadalupe and La Patria Silver-Gold epithermal vein deposits occur in south-westernChihuahua state, Mexico. The veins are hosted in a volcano-sedimentary sequence that comprises andesitic to basaltic resedimented volcaniclastic rocks, together with less abundant coherent and pyroclastic facies and minor red-beds. The host sequence is part of the Lower Volcanic Series, and formed in a magmatic arc environment during the Late Cretaceous to Early Tertiary Laramide Orogeny. The Lower Volcanic Series is overlain unconformably by an extensive sequence of Miocene rhyolitic ignimbrites, known as the Upper Volcanic Series. At this time, it is uncertain whether epithermal mineralisation was related to andesitic intrusions (85 Ma) and/or Oligocene rhyolitic dykes (25 Ma). An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. X-ray fluorescence spectrometry is used videly for routine quality control of the mining, )lending and agglomeration of iron ores. Most )f the procedures used, cannot tolerate significant changes in matrix composition or be Lpplied to a wide range of elements. Accord- ngly, a graphite briquette technique which is Lpplicable to some fifty elements in widely Tarying iron ore matrices is described. The ignificant advantages are suitability of the ame preparation for both optical emission and -ray spectrometry, a complete elemental overage for the range 5bcg/g to 100%, and the recision and accuracy of the methods are om.parable with the standard chemical.methods hich have been superseded in the authors' boratories. The proposed methods become ore attractive and economical as more prehensive information is sought.

The educational system is a dynamic; a flow resource that can be significantly shaped, changed and - refined by educationists. This paper analyses these various facets of geo- science education in Australia. The Australian educational philosophy is essentially a laissez- faire model, a free market approach without any real government or professional directive or stratagem. Students are therefore free to choose their own educational pathway dependent only upon their ability and the access to courses. Geological education at the tertiary level in Australia is described and critically analysed. There is a real need for a rationalisation of geological education in Australia, and this rationalisation should include not only the number of courses offered but should also aim to fully define both the philosophy and purpose of geological education and the accreditation procedures for the Students.

The cost of constantly extending a decline tunnel that plays a part in the actual extractive process is a revenue cost. The characteristics of such a decline tunnel are that it is dug in a series of relatively small excavations. It follows the ore body and is dug as close to the ore body as practicable. In addition, the decline allows for the extraction of ore in the immediate vicinity, with the ore being extracted in a relatively short period of time.

The Porgera gold project is now in its seventh year of operation as one of the world's prime gold mining projects in one of the most underdeveloped and remote regions of the world. The unique gold deposit was development in stages to its present size of operation with an underground mine of 2000tpd, an open pit operation moving 210,000tpd and a complex metallurgical plant treating an average of 16,500tpd of ore. During the past years the operation had to address an array of issues relating to the "development" of the region and this is still ongoing. Development means different things to different people and though the parties that signed the different agreements relating to the Mining Development Contract were aware of this, none has real- ised the extent to which this is true. The developing company (a joint venture between Placer Pacific as the Manager, Goldfields Porgera, Highlands Gold and the Government of PNG), provided funds for risky exploration and the capital for development of the project. Its shareholders ex- pect an economic and viable mine operation from the deposit to ensure them returns on their investment. The local people gave up their land, their isolated way of living and accepted to be out of their comfort zone for some time in anticipation of a better lifestyle and economic benefits in support of that lifestyle. The PNG Government has a leg in both camps and expects both outcomes at the same time. The Government is also the regulator and expects compliance on top of that. If development in general is to be successful, all parties must substantially satisfy all expectations. It is evident that the outcome of some elements of development are reasonably defined (i.e. develop a viable mine to exploit the deposit), whilst other elements are moving targets (i.e. a better lifestyle). The seeds for conflict are thus abundantly present and to resolve them requires the will of all parties in all areas to come to a solution. This path to problem solving is many times torturous as each party comes from a different culture and background and has a different understanding of the parameters in the equation.

The past decade has seen a great increase in activity in deep seismic reflection profiling of the continental crust. Some 20 countries have conducted field experiments and the total length of deep seismic profiles surveyed to date is approximately 25,000 km. This total is very large compared to the quantity of such data that existed previously, but very small compared to the total length of seis- mic profiles of the shallow crust carried out for petroleum exploration, which some- times has exceeded 600,000 km on land in one year alone and 1,600,000 km/yr on land and sea. Furthermore, 25,000 km of seismic pro- filing corresponds to exploration of only a tiny fraction of the total volume of the entire continental crust. Thus at this stage of development of the subject, one must be wary of generalizations that are based on these limited data and then ex- tended in scope to include the crust everywhere. The state of the subject is such that virtually every new seismic line reveals totally unexpected seismic fea- tures, a sign that the subject is in its major discovery phase and a warning to the generalizers. Nevertheless, in addition to much new information on deep crustal structure in specific locations, some broad consequences of application of this powerful geophysical technique to a region of the earth not pre- viously explored in this manner are be- coming clear. One is that, as seismic data on the deep continental crust become more abundant and more revealing of complexi- ties, the deep crust can be far better re- lated to rocks at the surface. Conse- quently, the geological style of reason- ing is now being extended from its normal domain of the near-surface to include the deepest crust in a comprehensive story of the evolution of the continents. This change is a subtle but important one and is evident, for example, in some cross sec- tions of the North American Transect Pro- gram, which show surface geology extended in a consistent, though speculative, manner to the top of the mantle. Ordinary kriging and non-linear geostatistical estimators are now well accepted methods in mining grade control and mine resource estimation. Kriging is also a necessary step in the most commonly used methods of conditional simulation used in the mining industry. In both kriging and conditional simulation, the search volume or ækriging neighbourhoodÆ is defined by the user. The definition of this search can have a very significant impact on the outcome of the kriging estimate or the quality of the conditioning of a simulation. In particular, a neighbourhood that is too restrictive can result in serious conditional biases. The methodology for quantitatively assessing the suitability of a kriging neighbourhood involves some simple tests (which we call æQuantified Kriging Neighbourhood AnalysisÆ or QKNA) that are well established in the geostatistical literature. The authors argue that QKNA is a mandatory step in setting up any kriging estimate, including one used for conditioning a simulation. Kriging is commonly described as a æminimum variance estimatorÆ but this is only true when the neighbourhood is properly defined. Arbitrary decisions about searches are highly risky, because the kriging weights are directly related to the variogram model, data geometry and block/sample support involved in the kriging. The criteria to look at when evaluating a particular kriging neighbourhood are the following: the slope of the regression of the ætrueÆ block grade on the æestimatedÆ block grade; the weight of the mean for a simple kriging; the distribution of kriging weights themselves (including the proportion of negative weights); and the kriging variance. Outside of the technical geostatistical literature, there is little in the published domain to describe the nature of QKNA and no practical presentation of case examples. In this paper we attempt to redress this by setting out the calculations required for QKNA and defining some approaches to interpreting the results. Several practical worked mining case examples are also given. Finally some comments are made on using the results of QKNA to assist with block size selection, choice of discretisation and mineral resource classification decisions.

Ltd.NOVEL METHOD OF MACHINING A SPHERICAL JOINTFig. 1 represents one half of a casing for a ball-joint coupling. In the ordinary methods of boring an external spherical casing, that is with a radius bar attached to the tool rest of a lathe, there is always an error in the bore. It has two flat sides, and this error is inherent in the ordinary orthodox method and cannot be corrected. The engineers of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd. undertook a job that had to be extremely accurate, and the tool shown in Fig. 2 was evolved. The great philosopher, Marshall McLuhan, is said to have stated that the use of forecasting as a means of guiding future actions is akin to driving an automobile through observations made in the rear-view mirror! In effect, in forecasting it is assumed that there will be an orderly progression from the past into the future, and that the model will be sufficiently unvarying for use to gauge both the directions and the rates of change. The concepts of forecasting have served man well in disciplines in which the relationship between causes and effects can be clearly demonstrated; such as between rainfall and crop yield, for example. These are of no value, however, when conditions change rapidly and unpredictably, or when there is no model at all. Even worse, under such circumstances our preconceived notions may cause us to make some horrendous errors in judgement. Such are the risks at present in attempting to make an assessment of the educational needs of the minerals industry for the coming century! The model, and the conceptions that we have had of the linkages between cause and effect are in disarray. Minerals markets are chaotic, and there is almost no ability to forecast trends in metal values. Linkages between supply and demand seem tenuous. Internationally, producers are struggling for survival. Mine closures, temporary shutdowns, and reopenings are frequent occurrences. Decision-making under uncertainty is probably one of the most certain things about the world mining industry Today!
