"Investors and other stakeholders assessing the risk, opportunity and relative value associated with a resource project need to appreciate the project in its correct context. Errors, omissions, biased reporting or conflicting information in project reporting may lead to a misinterpretation of technical and financial results, resulting in biased estimates or assumptions on project value.This paper provides a simple ‘Resource Project Framework’ for presenting a project’s status that may be readily benchmarked against other similar projects and to illustrate the stages required to advance the project outcomes to higher levels of certainty. The framework draws on definitions and guidelines readily available in various resource industry reporting codes and public company reporting requirements.The framework assesses three key areas for placing a resource project in its correct relative context, namely:the project development stagethe confidence in the Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and/or Ore Reservesthe level of accuracy, precision and confidence in the technical and economic studies supporting the reported results or options for the project.The application of the Resource Project Framework is illustrated using two project examples, one from publicly reported company project releases and the other for two development projects.CITATION:Noppé, M A, 2016. The Sapan Dalam coal deposit of Indonesia consists of ten steeply dipping seams with thicknesses varying between 0.1 and 3.5 m and split by shale, clay, silt and sandstone. The area contains four faults dipping about 75¦ with four to 85 m vertical displacements. The complex nature of the deposit coupled with limited 27 exploration drillholes at an average spacing of 200 m made it difficult to create a realistic geological model. A three-dimensional gridded seam model gave a fair representation of the deposit. Attempt to create an optimum pit using the WHITTLE 3D pit optimiser proved unsuccessful since the pit optimiser is restricted to standard regular or fixed blocks. The gridded seam model was converted to a fixed block model prior to the optimum pit design. Smoothing and pit base controlling were also introduced to obtain a smoother pit. A mining scenario produced 3.6 million tonnes of coal, 28.4 million bcm of waste and US$18.1 million revenue.

Major exploration companies can have a problem with what to do with small precious metal ore bodies located through exploration programmes. Low tonnage, but high grade, ore bodies too small to justify in-house development.1.2 Ban Ban Mining is a Sunshine Coast based partnership with considerable expertise in mining and earthmoving which specializes in the mining of small/medium size ore bodies on behalf of the tenement holder on a profit sharing or royalty basis.1.3 The partnership's first successful venture has been the mining and vat leaching of a small 40,000 tonne ore body with a head grade of 5 gm/tonne gold and 32 gms/tonne silver, situated near Ban Ban Springs in southeast Queensland.1.4 This paper looks at the low cost vat leaching method of treatment, as an alternative to CIP and CIL in the processing of low tonnage/high grade precious metal ore bodies.

The North Western Sewer tunnel extends over 11.5 km in the North Western suburbs of Melbourne.The $253 million tunnel project provides a critical link in the Melbourne Sewer Network. The existing sewers fail to service the increasing demands of the growing population of the North West regions of Melbourne. This project will protect the environment and improve the standards of service of the existing system. This paper concentrates on Section three of this project, consisting of the final 4 km of the Contract, three access shafts and a cut and cover section of tunnel.Transfield Tunnelling as Head Contractor constructed the tunnel for Melbourne Water Corporation, with Enetech Streamline, formally Streamline Australia, a trading arm of Melbourne Water acting as Superintendent.Excavation of Section three of this project commenced in September 1994 and project completion is scheduled for October 1998. The tunnel passes below the residential suburb of Essendon, through some of the most challenging ground conditions ever attempted to be tunnelled in Australia.

Among the solutions currently being considered for improving traffic flow in Sydney are the construction of major road tunnels, principally the Eastern Distributor Tunnels, leading from the end of the Cahill Expressway to Drivers Triangle and South of Taylor Square and the Sydney Harbour Tunnel, which incorporates sections of driven tunnel at the northern and southern sides of the harbour. The Eastern Distributor Tunnels, known as Stages 2 and 3 of the Eastern Distributor Scheme comprise: Stage 2 - A south bound two lane tunnel from north of William Street to Driver's Triangle. The southern end includes two Y junctions (locally 3 to 4 lane widths) with exits into South Dowling Street, Anzac Parade and Moore Park Road. Stage 3 - A north bound, two lane tunnel from Taylor Square to Palmer Street just north of William Street. Further details of the Eastern Distributor Tunnels are given in the paper by Baxter, Chappel and Fishburn (1986) which is included in this conference.

Faced with the need to improve workplace conditions in both its development and production headings in its existing K1 orebody, as well as its new K Link and K2 orebodies, the Kencana mine in Indonesia took the novel approach of reversing the ventilation on most of its access ramp by outcasting up the ramp to the portal. Working levels were then fed with fresh air via auxiliary fans sealed into the current surface ‘egress’ intake raises (ladderways) or another small surface intake raisebore rather than from fans hung in the ramp as in the past. Outcasting the portal provided a substantial increase in the total mine exhaust capacity allowing fewer levels to be ventilated in series and significantly improving conditions, especially in the most difficult workplaces to ventilate. It also reduced the consequences if there was to be a fire on a vehicle in the ramp. The same system using the ramp as an exhaust is also intended to be used as part of the final ventilation solution for the new K2 orebody which also uses a novel single surface ventilation shaft that is vertically split into separate intake and exhaust compartments using a concrete brattice. Using the main ramp as an exhaust has potential application in many other operations in Australia using surface ramps which otherwise frequently suffer from overuse of series ventilation circuits and poor working conditions at the mine bottom.

The Hermit Islands are situated at 145¦ E 1 30'S in the Bismarck Sea approximately 200km WNW of Manus Island. They are dominated by basalt flows, one of which yielded a K/Ar isotopic date of 3.4 + 0.05Ma. All basalts examined were olivine-bearing, but one sample also contained hornblende. Although many outcrops were weathered, no evidence of pervasive hydrothermal alteration was observed on any islands and non-weathered rocks are petrographically fresh and many retain glass.

A 328 m, 2.4 m diameter raise-bored shaft has been equipped with a modular ladderway system to provide a second means of egress from Aberfoyle's Hellyer Mine in Tasmania. The modular ladderway consists of platforms, ladders and service pipes assembled at the surface and progressively lowered down the shaft. This system provides a rapid, safe and economical non-entry approach to equipping a shaft. The modular construction and single suspension allows for future extension or for reuse in another shaft.

Through partnering with mining customers, DYNO has been able to develop some specific technologies that benefit blasting operations particularly in underground mining. Some of these areas are: 1. Cost allocation and product tracking systems; 2. Borehole video surveys of breakthrough blastholes; 3. Borehole video photography for logging VRM blastholes; 4. Toe-load uphole loading for sublevel cave mining operations; 5. 3D blast modelling for underground ring blasting. This paper outlines these developments in the context of a Canadian underground metalliferous mine.

"Geometallurgical programs require the collection of representative samples for geochemical, mineralogical and metallurgical test work. Such protocols must be designed to suit the style of orebody in question. The distribution, proportion and size of gold particles have a direct impact on the effectiveness of sampling and test work protocols, and the gold recovery processes employed. Characterisation studies focusing on ore mineralogy, and gold particle deportment, size and distribution are required. High resolution X-ray computed tomography provides a non-destructive method for analysing the 3D nature of gold in rock samples. It can be used to calculate the modal abundance, particle size and distribution of gold in the sample volume. This paper presents a case study of the imaging of in situ gold particles in a high-grade gold ore. The Nick O’Time reef system comprises laminated quartz veins, which locally bear extreme grades of up to 100 oz/t gold. The mineralisation has previously been characterised from both a mineralogical and metallurgical perspective. Eight visible gold-bearing vein samples were scanned using X-ray microtomography. The mmmg operations carried out by North Broken Hill Limited, necessitate the use of four shafts for the haulage of ore, men, and supplies. These are:-1. Blackwood's Shaft.-British Section, which has 100 feet intervals between levels to the bottom 800 feet level plat;2. Thompson's Shaft.-British Section, which has 100 feet intervals between levels to the bottom 1400 feet level plat;3. No. 1 Shaft.-With intervals between levels:(a) 100 feet to the 800 feet level,(b) 150 feet from 800 feet level to the 1700 feet level;4. No. {2 Shaft.-2770 feet from collar to bottom plat, with intervals between levels: (a) 100 feet to 800 feet level, (b) 150 feet from 800 feet level to the 2600 feet level. The creation of an accurate and precise enough database requires the collection of many representative samples, subsampling and assaying them without destroying their integrity. The selection and implementation of sampling protocols often lead to severe difficulties, making the unaware practitioner vulnerable to massive exploration, feasibility and operating failures. Therefore, there is no substitute for a good understanding of the Theory of Sampling (TOS). Either because of ignorance, or because of short-term economic reasons, failure to comply with many stringent conditions can be devastating for the validity of a feasibility study, leading to false evaluations, to the abandonment of a viable property, or to the exploitation of one that is not profitable. All these failures have something in common: insufficient duplicate sampling, subsampling and assaying were performed; very important, preliminary heterogeneity tests were never performed; for short-term economic reasons, poor sampling and subsampling protocols were selected, second-class sampling systems and weightometers were installed and poor preventive maintenance and cleaning were implemented;and sampling experts were called only when the project was obviously in trouble. The conclusion is clear: in due time, iterative auditing of sampling practices is an insurance policy against massive financial losses for the company involved. A complete, comprehensive 100 point checklist of sampling Quality Assurance and Quality Control is provided, so critically important details to ensure success are not forgotten.

In 1939 at the annual meeting of the Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science, held at Canberra, a paper was contributed by E. de C: Clarke and H. A. Ellist in which a plea was made for more "facts" concerning metasomatism near ore-bodies in Western Australia. From time to time writers here, and in other parts of the world, have discussed the alterations in wall rocks of various reefs and lodes, but little has yet been attempted in the matter of accumulation of quantitative data, both chemical and mineralogical, and in the correlation and comparative study of this data. Such a detailed comparative study is needed to determine the economic value of a practical application of our accumulated knowledge of the phenomena of metasomatism.When in 1939 the opportunity offered for an examination of the core from 4 bores recently put down by the Big Bell Mines Ltd., to explore the ore-body of the Corinthian G.M. 10 miles N.W. of Southern Cross, Western Australia it was hoped that some small beginnings might be made of an accumulation of comparative and quantitative data regarding the metasomatism of the wall rock immediately adjacent to this ore-body.By the courtesy of the Big Bell Mines Ltd., the core from the 4 bores was delivered to Survey Headquarters, Perth;in the middle of June, 1939 and copies of assay plans of part of the underground workings at Corinthian, and of the results of assays of the bore cores, were also supplied by the management of the above company.It was not, however, until March, 1940, that it was 'found possible to investigate the core. At that time the writer's colleague, Mr. R. S. Matheson, conducted a: megascopic examination of all the bores and selected material from two of these for possible future chemical analyses. The CO2 footprints in the production of Mn-ferroalloys and silicon/ferrosilicon are correlated with the fossil carbon consumption. The CO2 emissions may be reduced in the Mn-ferroalloy process by increasing the degree of prereduction and reduction of carbonate materials, while the silicon/ferrosilicon process is optimised based on silicon yield. By changing the fossil reductant into biogenic reductants, the global warming potential will be decreased even more. Even if the reductants are biogenic reductants, there will still be a global warming potential (GWP) in eg the electrode consumption and the CH4 emissions in the charcoal production. To reduce the use of fossil reductants there are also more disruptive technologies like the use of H2 that at least for the silicon production is on a very low technology readiness level (TRL). Using metallothermic processes will reduce the use of carbon but requires carbon neutral metal reductants. Electrowinning can have low CO2 emissions, and the electrowinning of pure Mn is a technology of high TRL. Salt and oxide electrolysis is under investigation for both Mn and Si production however the research is still on a low TRL. The use of CCS/CCU (carbon capture storage/utilisation) is a part of obtaining carbon neutral processes. Last, the energy mix used for these energy demanding processes is discussed.

In mining and processing operations where minerals, high in pyrite and low in calcite/dolomite are processed, acid is generated, which needs to be neutralised. Ticor at Empangeni in South Africa (SA) produces rutile (TiO2), leucoxene (TiO2 plus iron compounds), titanium (Ti), zircon (Zi) and ilmenite (TiO2 plus iron compounds). Neutralisation is required in the processing plant where acid is leached into the wash water. This water needs to be treated to a quality suitable for re-use in the metallurgical process or to a higher quality to make it suitable for discharge into the Empangeni sewage system (SA). For re-use the water needs to be neutral and under-saturated with respect to gypsum while for discharge into the sewage system the sulfate concentration needs to be reduced to less than 500 mg/L (as SO4). Acid mine water is generally neutralised with lime. Disadvantages associated with lime are the costs and maintenance of the slaking equipment as well as hazards, associated with handling of the alkali. The cost of powdered limestone (CaCO3) in South Africa, a by-product, is 50 - 60 per cent cheaper than lime. A technology has been developed where limestone is used for neutralisation of acid mine water instead of lime. This development includes: Limestone handling and dosing system. A novel, robust system has been developed where waste CaCO3 from the paper industry is slurried to a constant density. A full-scale plant was constructed to evaluate its performance (Figure 4). The dosing system consists of an inclined slab onto which the limestone is stored and from where it is slurried into a make-up tank. The density of the slurry in the make-up tank is controlled via a loadcell that measures the weight of the tank (operated at constant volume) and activates/deactivates the spray of the recycle slurry onto the slab. Integrated limestone neutralisation/lime treatment process. In this process powdered CaCO3 is used for neutralisation and partial sulfate removal of acid leached from the coal washing plant. The sulfate concentration can be further reduced to below the saturation level of gypsum (ie 1200 mg/L) through gypsum crystallisation by means of lime treatment, resulting in metal precipitation (eg Fe3+ and Al3+). CO2- treatment for CaCO3 precipitation. The pH of the lime treated water can be adjusted to pH levels of 8.5 and lower using CO2. The CO2, generated during limestone neutralisation (Equation 2), can be captured and used in this stage of the process. The first two stages (limestone- and lime neutralisation) of this technology have been implemented on full-scale at Ticor to treat the effluent of the process. The constructed plant is 80 m3/hr and differs from coal processing plants by way of not containing Fe(II) and Fe(III) in the water. The CO2-treatment stage (Stage 3) will soon be implemented at IHM as part of a program to optimise the technology for maximum benefits.

This article presents an overview of the experimental phase equilibria studies of S-containing systems (Ni-Sn-S, Cu-Sb-S, and Cu-Sn-S) and As-containing systems (Fe-Sb-As and Fe-Sn-As). These systems improve the prediction capabilities of FactSage in a 20-component ‘Cu2O’-PbO-ZnOFeO- Fe2O3-CaO-SiO2-S-(Al2O3-MgO-CrO-Cr2O3-Na2O)-(As, Sn, Sb, Bi, Ag, Au, Ni, Co) system for complex pyrometallurgical operations during both refining and recycling. Experiments involved equilibration at predetermined temperatures (300–1200°C) with or without preheating, followed by rapid quenching in a brine. Quenched samples were then directly measured using an electron probe microanalyser. For the Ni-Sn-S system, liquid phases (NiS- and SnS-rich mattes and liquid metal) and solid phases (Ni1+xSn, SnS, Ni3Sn, FCC-Ni, Ni1-xS, NiS2, Ni3Sn4, SnS2, Sn2S3 and β-Ni3S2) were observed. A new Ni3Sn2S2 phase was found to melt incongruently. For the Cu-Sb-S system, liquid metal, matte, FCC-Cu, digenite, Sb, CuSbS2, Cu3SbS3 and Cu3SbS4 phases were observed. For the Cu-Sn-S system, liquid metal, matte, digenite, SnS and Cu3Sn phases were found at liquidus.

A series of conventional dynamic uniaxial compression (CDUC) tests and coupled static-dynamic loading (CSDL) tests were conducted using a split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) system to explore the dynamic mechanical behaviour and fracture characteristics of medium sandstone on a microscale in the laboratory. In the CDUC tests, the dynamic uniaxial compressive strength of the medium sandstone was rate-dependent, while the dynamic elastic modulus was not dependent on the strain rate. Then, we proposed a generalised model to characterise the rate-dependent strength from 17.5 s-1 to 96.8 s-1. In the CSDL tests, with increasing initial pre-static stress, the dynamic elastic modulus and dynamic strength increased nonlinearly at first and then decreased. The results show that two classical mechanical types (ie Class I and Class II) are observed from the dynamic stress-strain responses of the CDUC and CSDL tests. By means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the micro difference of post-loading microfracture characteristics in Class I and Class II behaviour was identified. In Class I behaviour, intergranular fracture (IF) usually initiates at or near the grains, most cracks deflected along the grain boundaries, resulting in a sharp angular edge, then coalesces to the main fracture surface that splits the specimen along the direction of stress wave propagation. In contrast, Class II behaviour results from the combined IF and transgranular fracture (TF).

Metal ferrites are formed by the high temperature reaction of various metal oxides with hematite and are commonly found in the calcines derived from the sulfation roasting of zinc, copper and nickel sulfide concentrates. The Jarosite Process is designed to treat such zinc ferrites by hot acid dissolution but little information is available on the basic reactivity of various ferrites and the effect of Eh. As part of an overall study of the reactivity of calcine products from copper and nickel sulfide concentrates it has been found that Eh plays an important role in the rate of dissolution of magnetite, hematite and nickel oxide by HC1 and H2SO4. Further studies on the reactivity of pure synthetic copper,zinc,and nickel ferrites also show a dependence on Eh. This paper discusses the relative reactivity of iron oxides and metal ferrites in 1 M HC1 and the results of electrochemical studies using cyclic voltammetry. A mechanism for the dissolution reaction is proposed as well as factors which determine their leaching. It is shown that the rate of leaching of metal ferrites with HC1 is enhanced in the presence of reducing agents such as Cu(I) and Sn(II). By contrast the leaching of NiO is enhanced by oxidising agents such as Cu(II).
