Rock bolts are important in underground mining as they provide support to the rock mass around the excavation. They are the most common reinforcement method in mining and civil engineering excavations. The length of the bolts, types and spacing between them can be varied, depending on the reinforcement requirements and the use case (Kolapo, Onifade and Praise, 2022). The rock bolt provides safety and stability for the rock mass in the excavation area and they can be mechanically anchored, grouted, or friction anchored. They normally don’t have a measurement option and there is a possibility that it failed without showing visible signs on the surface, especially in grouted rebar bolts where they can still have some residual strength. Therefore, support functionality can be lost without recognising it. To overcome that, sensors can be installed on all three previously mentioned bolt systems. Intelligent bolts with implemented measuring systems have a function of showing changes and indicating if there is some damage on the bolt. So, it can be said that intelligent rock bolts are regular bolts equipped with additional instruments which are helping us detect potential instabilities inside of the rock mass or malfunction of the bolt itself. Changes in rock mass can be tracked, by measuring rock bolt reaction concerning the excavation response. Rock mass damage and instabilities are therefore measured in terms of rock mass deformation. Moreover, other additional information depending on the type of the sensor device could be collected. Based on such measurements, information about rock mass state can be derived. Different rock bolt types work at different reaction principles. Therefore, limitations on sensor application and information that can be extracted must be considered.

Broken Hill South Limited's discovery of phosphate deposits in the northwest of Queensland in 1966 prompted intensive exploration which has proved phosphate rock in excess of 2,000 million tons at ten separate deposits.Systematic exploration for phosphate in Australia was initiated by the company in 1964. Early in 1966, an investigation of oil wells in the Georgina Basin in the Northern Territory and Queensland revealed widespread anomalous phosphate in early Middle Cambrian Beetle Creek Formation and Thorntonia Limestone. Phosphorites recognized in oil wells in the southeastern part of the Basin, Queensland, led to the discovery of the Duchess deposits. Exploration of the Beetle Creek Formation since 1966 has disclosed nine other sizeable deposits north of Duchess around the eastern margin of the Basin. The Lady Annie and the adjoining Lady Jane deposits, by reason of their location, 160 miles south of the Gulf of Carpentaria, are expected to be the first to be brought into production.Beneficiation testing and engineering investigations commenced in 1967. Transport between the deposits and various port sites in the Gulf of Carpentaria has been extensively studied and a slurry pipeline as a means of transport to a deep water island port, is now being investigated.

In order to develop the HF-free flotation reagent system, the main objective of this investigation was to study the possibility of separation of quartz from feldspar using non-ionic surfactants as the collector. The non-ionic surfactants used were polyoxyethyl cethyl ether (PECE) and polyethylene glycol monocethyl ether (PGME). The flotation behaviour of quartz and microcline with PECE and PGME was investigated. Each surfactant was a good selective collector for quartz with its recovery being influenced by pH and surfactant concentration. Quartz is floated favourably by both types of polyoxyethylene non-ionic surfactant whereas microcline was not so much. The floatability of quartz increases as the oxyethylene length of surfactants increases. Zeta potential measurements in the system of PGME/mineral were also carried out. It was determined that in the absence of PGME the points of zero charge for quartz and microcline should be approximately at pH 2.5 and 1.8, respectively. The addition of PGME to the system causes both minerals to become less negatively charged. Differences in the zeta potential value between quartz and microcline, in the presence of PGME, were detected. It can be suggested that the interaction of the oxyethylene group to the microcline surface should not be as strong as that to the quartz surface. In the mixed surfactant system of PGME and dodecylamine acetate (DAA), a small addition of DAA causes drastic enhancement of quartz flotation in the wide pH range of 1 ~ 10. The old Trekelano mining area is situated in the Cloncurry Gold and Mineral Field 14 km east-south-east of Duchess. It connected with the main Cloncurry-Dajarra railway line by a private line from Juenburra, a distance of 10 km. The distance by rail from Townsville is 561 km. The area was first mentioned circa 1902 - 1903 when a very short report said, that a Tony Allis had taken a parcel of copper ore out of a mine which, he called æThe InheritedÆ. After that report, nothing further was printed until about 1906, when traces of copper were noticed on a wagon track going to Kiama Well. The Trekelano deposit did not outcrop, with the cap covered by about two metres of soil. The deposit was named after an early pastoral holding. The early prospectors were however disappointed by TrekelanoÆs low copper grades, approximately five per cent Cu. This is understandable when, in those days, about 25 per cent was the cut-off grade for mines in the district. Meanwhile, The Hampden Mining and Smelting Company were constructing a smelter to treat their sulphide ores at Kuradala that was replacing their high grade oxides ore. By about 1910, the Hampden Mining and Smelting Company was experiencing smelting problems, and needed suitable oxidised copper ore to blend with the Kuradala pyritic ore. Someone must have remembered the Trekelano low-grade oxides, resulting in agreement to mine and cart the ore to Duchess, from where it was railed to Hampden, as Kuradala was known at that time.

"The Batu Hijau copper/gold mine, operated by PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara, is located in the south-western part of Sumbawa Island, Indonesia, and is situated ~10 km from the south coast at an altitude of ~450 m above sea level. The mine became fully operational by year 2000 and processes approximately 120 000 t of ore per day that contain an average of 0.53 per cent copper and 0.4 per tonne (g/t) gold. Tailings management at the mine includes a deep-sea tailings placement (DSTP) system that discharges tailings through a pipeline via an outfall located at a depth of 125 m at the head of the submarine Senunu Canyon (Figure 1).The environmental impact assessment undertaken prior to approval of the DSTP evaluated both on-land tailings storage facility (TSF) and DSTP options for tailings management. Negative attributes of the on-land TSF included removal of approximately 2300 ha of forest/agricultural land, the potential relocation of >2000 people from their communities, the high average annual rainfall (>2500 mm) and potential for earthquakes presenting challenges for water management and creating a long-term risk of failure. The final choice and Indonesian Government’s approval of DSTP was also influenced by the close proximity of the deep submarine canyon to the mine. The Batu Hijau mine is one of the larger examples of DSTP in the world and deposits tailings at the greatest depth. The depth of the main canyon increases to >2000 m within 20 km of the coast, and to >3000 m approximately 50 km from the coast.The DTSP at Batu Hijau must comply with an environment management plan (EMP) and environment monitoring plan of permit stipulation that approved its commencement in 2000; updated in 2010 and 2015. The environmental management objectives were to avoid impacts to highly productive components of the ecosystem such as coral reefs, mangroves, surface waters and fisheries, and confinement of impacts to areas of low biological productivity. In the vicinity of the DSTP outfall and within the Senunu Canyon, the management plan predicted significant adverse impacts from the DSTP on the marine ecosystem in the form of: reduction in sea water quality due to elevated turbidity and dissolved copper concentrations burial of benthic organisms a reduced habitat for demersal fish.Recovery of the pelagic and benthic ecosystem to preoperating conditions was predicted to occur within the first two years after operations cease. The CSIRO has performed due diligence studies to independently verify compliance with permits and evaluate new monitoring objectives (Apte et al, 2004; Simpson et al, 2010; Angel et al, 2015), and has performed assessments of environmental monitoring data on the tailings footprint and ore stockpile processing against the above environmental objectives (Simpson and Angel, 2015).CITATION:Angel, B M, Simpson, S L and Waworuntu, J, 2016. The behaviour and deportment of indium during the precipitation of sodium jarosite from Fe2(S04)3 - Na2SO4 solutions were investigated. Indium is readily precipitated with sodium jarosite, and the extent of In precipitation increases as the In concentration of the solution increases. It was shown that In 3+ substitutes for Fe 3+ in the jarosite structure to form a nearly ideal solid solution series. On a molar basis, the precipitation of Fe is slightly favoured over that of In, and the difference is reduced as the pH increases. Sodium jarosite precipitation becomes kinetically rapid at temperatures >70¦C, but increasing temperatures in the range 70 to 150¦C affect neither the relative precipitation of In and Fe nor the composition of the jarosite product. Low Na2SO4 concentrations result in reduced product yields and jarosite precipitates in which H3O' > Na+. The hydronium-rich precipitates have reduced In contents. Increasing the ZnSO4 concentration of the solution slightly increases the quantity of jarosite formed and results in the incorporation of -0.3 per cent Zn in the jarosite structure. Otherwise, the presence of ZnSO4 has no significant effect on the composition of the jarosite. Seeding accelerates the rate of jarosite precipitation but has a negligible influence on the deportment of In. The jarosite precipitation reaction at 98¦C is relatively rapid and near-steady state conditions are achieved in - 6 h even in the absence of seed. The initially precipitated jarosite is slightly enriched in In with respect to Fe. The ferric ion concentration of the solution has a significant influence on both the amount of jarosite formed and its composition. In particular, the jarosites precipitated from dilute Fe3+ media have significantly enhanced In contents. Hence, it may be possible to recover - 25 per cent of the dissolved In, at the 1000 mg/L level, in a jarosite precipitate assaying - ten per cent In by the controlled oxidation-precipitation of sodium jarosite from a ferrous sulphate processing solution.

Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML) is owned and jointly managed by Ashanti Goldfields Company (Ghana) and Anglogold (South Africa). The mine is currently one of the largest gold producing open pit operations in Africa producing 620 000 ounces of gold and mining in excess of 70 000 000 tonnes of material per annum. The mine currently has 2000 full time employeeÆs and a mine life in excess of 12 years. Geita Gold Mine is comprised of 11 different gold deposits situated in the Lake Victoria Goldfields of North Western Tanzania (Figure 1). The gold deposits are primarily associated with banded ironstone formations within an Archaean greenstone belt. Current global resources, including Inferred, stand at 129.5 million tonnes grading 3.91 g/t (16.2 M oz). Open pit reserves total 70.4 million tonnes grading 4.16 g/t (9.4 M oz). The majority of the gold resource is hosted by the three deposits (Nyankanga, Lone Cone and Geita Hill) within the æGeita TrendÆ a large and continuous (>4 km long) mineralised zone (Adofo, 2002). Geita Gold Mine commenced operations in June 2000, as the second large-scale open pit gold mine in Tanzania. The new workforce of 800 people had no previous experience in open pit gold mining. Since the start of the operation, Geita Gold MineÆs management ambition was to become a world leader in the application of best practice in all technical disciplines and in operational success. Staff development and training was identified as one of the major components in the company achieving its aim. Geita Gold MineÆs management has committed the necessary training staff, resources and the commitment of over $US 1 M a year to staff training and development programs for 2003 and 2004. The process and management of Geita Gold MineÆs mining geology staff training and development program is presented in this paper.

Since the introduction of Lithium-Ion Batteries (LIBs) in 1991, the market for lithium-ion cells has been driven by the high demand for portable electronic devices and more recently for batteries for the electric car industry. It is expected to grow rapidly to reach 2600 GWh globally by 2030 (US Government, Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, 2021). However, there is a desperate need to recycle LIBs to recover valuable cathode materials and graphite. For this reason, several physical and chemical recycling technologies have been proposed to recover these materials from spent batteries. Amongst these, froth flotation technology is a potential cost-effective technology for separation of the graphite fraction from the lithium oxide components due to the natural hydrophobicity of graphite and density difference between graphite and cathode materials (Folayan et al, 2021).

The underground Sunrise Dam gold mine commenced in October 2003 to extract ore from a series of orebodies with various dips, widths, and ore grades over a strike length of 1.5 km. To successfully operate flat stopes it was identified that a means to extract ore left behind after blasting in stopes with dips ranging from 15 to 40 degrees was needed. Various options were available, which included a bulk water cannon, hand held high-pressure water jet, remote controlled small dozer, several mini excavators and finally a specialised remote controlled excavator from the demolition industry. Trials were commenced for the bulk water cannon option in 2006 that proved that the concept worked, however, the system was too cumbersome to set up for use in cycle with production. Hand washing down using mine (low pressure) water with a two-inch bullhose proved of limited value. The small, one metre high remote controlled dozer as used in South Africa was reviewed, but the steepness of most of the stopes precluded this machine. The hand held high-pressure water jet option is still being investigated; with safety factors still being addressed. Several mini excavators were trialled to clean out the flat stopes with generally poor results, the machines being either too large to fit in the drives and pull ore down or too small with too short reach to effectively and efficiently pull ore out of the stope. In early 2007 a Brokk 330 remote controlled excavator was trialled on site with the low profile of the machine and unique arm configuration proving an effective tool for pulling ore from the footwall of short, flat stopes. A Brokk 330 remote controlled excavator was purchased in late 2007 and is currently in operation.

Nickel phytomining is a low cost alternative to traditional nickel mining and a complementary process to existing mining operations in areas with low-grade nickel soils or nickel waste material. The process of nickel phytomining consists of growing selected hyperaccumulator plant species (‘metal crops’) on Ni-rich (ultramafic) soils, followed by harvesting and incineration of the biomass to produce a ‘bio-ore’ from which Ni salts or Ni metal may be recovered (Chaney et al, 2007). The ‘metal crops’ are selected on the basis of high biomass yield combined with high Ni concentrations (>1 per cent) in the above-ground biomass (Chaney et al, 2007). Currently, Alyssum murale and A. corsicum have been used for Ni phytomining trials, mainly undertaken in Albania and USA (Bani et al, 2015; Li et al, 2003), while the agronomy of <10 species has been tested in temperate regions (Nkrumah et al, 2016). Nickel phytomining has high economic potential; however, large-scale demonstrations are needed to provide ‘real-life’ evidence for commercial operations (van der Ent et al, 2015). Unrealised opportunities exist in tropical regions for commercial scale Ni phytomining. To date, the agronomy of tropical ‘metal crops’ has not been tested. Mt Todd lies towards the south end of the Pine Creek Geosyncline, sandwiched between the Cullen Batholith and the Edith Falls Basin, in an area of regionally metamorphosed sandstones, siltstones and shales. The Batman deposit, some 3 km west of Mt Todd is a sheeted quartz vein system hosted within greywackes of the Palaeoproterozoic Burrell Creek Formation (Finniss River Group). The gold-bearing quartz veins, trending 010¦-020¦ and dipping 60¦-70¦E, are commonly 0.5 to 5 cm wide and occur at intervals which are from 10 cm to 1 m apart. Gold tends to be restricted to the quartz veinlets and immediately adjacent country rock. Grade Control utilises two 4 m 'collar' samples which are collected from each 8 m production blasthole. The irregular distribution of the quartz veins and erratic gold mineralisation has resulted in a disseminated 'salt and pepper' type of gold occurrence, with only a poorly defined footwall. Delineation of ore and waste blocks for mining uses an approach which combines the smoothing effect of kriging with a pragmatic view of the raw data. Large ore blocks with simple geometry help to minimise mining dilution, reduce block variance and give good reconciliations to interpreted ore tonnes and grade. Daily mine face advance is reported against truck counts and provides continual comparison with budgeted production. All data processing uses Gemcom software, together with Lotus spreadsheets.

This paper discusses cone penetration test correlations for loose gold tailings that were developed within a critical state soil mechanics framework. The development of a new calibration chamber for cone penetration testing that consists of a modified triaxial cell is described. Some of the early development and commissioning issues that were encountered, as well as the solutions adopted are outlined, including the system to prepare the samples and to acquire high-quality data from the testing. Also, the triaxial laboratory testing required to achieve the critical state line is described, including some of the basic precautions considered necessary as good practice. Additionally, the system adopted for volume tracking of the calibration chamber sample is described, which is essential for ensuring a reliable state parameter comparison against the acquired cone penetration test data. Finally, some laboratory test data from the calibration chamber is plotted against the soil behaviour type charts currently available from various authors.

Mining the Carpathia orebody at the Ardlethan tin mine in the late 1970s involved an innovative approach to underground mining which stretched the limits of drilling and blasting techniques. Holes of up to 95 m in length were drilled and blasted from the surface to extract an orebody which extended from 45 m to approximately 95 m below surface. This approach resulted in the elimination of an underground drilling sublevel, thus minimising the costs and hazards associated with underground drilling and blasting. Now, almost 30 years on, this method would probably still be the most appropriate choice.

This paper describes a steam outburst in a metal mine which occurred in December 1992 in Japan, resulting in two fatalities. The outburst occurred just after blasting in a heading face 600 m below surface (SL-50 m), 1664 m from a mouth of the mine. The scale of the outburst was large and the fragments of the outburst spread up to 34 m from the face, the total volume of the outburst was estimated to be 206 m3. The outburst materials were mostly clay originated from the typical surrounding rock of sulfide ore and basalt. The shape of the larger outburst fragments were slabs with a thickness of 10 to 20 cm. The victims were found in a main ventilation air shaft, 175 m and 380 m from the face, respectively. The mine mainly produces copper, lead and zinc. The face was ventilated by a 560 mm diameter duct with a fan and the strata temperature of the rock was estimated to be in the range of 120 to 140¦C. There is a famous hot spring near the mine. A thorough investigation into the unprecedented accident was made including an on-site inspection and investigation of rock characteristics in laboratories.

Education for the Mineral Industry in Australia developed in an uncoordinated but effective fashion till the mid 1960's, with recognised quality in graduates, with output matching demand, and with industry needs being fulfilled. Then in the space of a further 20 years, as company structures expanded, as the number, complexity, and costs of mineral projects escalated, as educational facilities, costs and politics increased, as community perceptions and aspirations changed, as government control of minerals and education increased, and as mineral sales cycles and markets fluctuated widely, the very fabric of Australian Mineral Education fell in tatters. Extractive Metallurgy Education suffered most in this collapse, and no compre- hensive remedies have been initiated. We are all the losers. In the 1990's, the extraction of Australian minerals and metals will increase in international significance, and the education of Extractive Metallurgists must meet this need. After examining the current situation, a series of management strategies are proposed to enable Extractive Metallurgical Education to survive and prosper in the next two decades and beyond. These strategic proposals involve industry, the government, the educational bodies, and individuals, in a range of short and long term objectives, policies, and actions.

In the past decade mineral deposit models have become an important tool for the exploration geoscientist. By combining genetic theories on the formation of particular deposit styles, with geological, geochemical and geophysical criteria relevant to ore location, it has been possible to more effectively focus exploration effort to the regions and local targets which have the best chance of success. However, such models have their limitations, and must be carefully and critically applied and continually updated as new technical and research information becomes available.

The most important aspect of modelling a geological variable, such as metal grade, is the spatial correlation. Spatial correlation describes the relationship between realisations of a geological variable sampled at different locations. Any method for spatially modelling such a variable should be capable of accurately estimating the true spatial correlation. Conventional kriged models are the most commonly used in mining for estimating grade or other variables at unsampled locations, and these models use the variogram or covariance function to model the spatial correlations in the process of estimation. However, this usage assumes the relationships of the observations of the variable of interest at nearby locations are only influenced by the vector distance between the locations. This means that these models assume linear spatial correlation of grade. In reality, the relationship with an observation of grade at a nearby location may be influenced by both distance between the locations and the value of the observations (ie non-linear spatial correlation, such as may exist for variables of interest in geometallurgy). Hence this may lead to inaccurate estimation of the ore reserve if a kriged model is used for estimating grade of unsampled locations when non-linear spatial correlation is present. Copula-based methods, which are widely used in financial and actuarial modelling to quantify the non-linear dependence structures, may offer a solution. This method was introduced by Bßrdossy and Li (2008) to geostatistical modelling to quantify the non-linear spatial dependence structure in a groundwater quality measurement network. Their copula-based spatial modelling is applied in this research paper to estimate the grade of 3D blocks. Furthermore, real-world mining data is used to validate this model. In the future, Illawarra Coal, the primary metallurgical coal producer in the southern coal fields of New South Wales, will face many unique challenges not found in other coal or minerals production areas. To manage these challenges and determine the best strategy for the business, Illawarra Coal has adopted a systematic strategic planning process, which starts from the broadest possible options analysis and culminates in a ægo-forwardÆ operating case that individual mine sites use as the basis for short-term planning. This paper will discuss two major topics. Firstly an overview of the Illawarra Coal and BHP Billiton strategic planning processes. This will demonstrate the range of variables and inputs that are required for the planning process, and the system which is followed to evaluate different alternatives for the extraction of the resource. Secondly, having discussed the primary external and internal factors that must be accounted for in the planning process, and the main issues affecting the viability and likelihood of each alternative, the paper will discuss the particular challenges that Illawarra Coal will face in the coming decades. These challenges include: market and price uncertainty; managing impact on surface features, infrastructure and environment; community interaction; transport and logistics constraints; unknown mining environments; lack of geological knowledge; limited surface access for new mining domains; changing attitudes to longwall mining in the Illawarra; ageing workforce; and cost and overhead management. The paper intends to discuss how these issues impact the business currently and how they are incorporated into Life of Asset plans and overall corporate strategy for Illawarra Coal.

Until 1980 copper, lead and zinc sulphide slurries have been success- fully dewatered for rail and sea transport for many years at the Rose- bery site of North Broken Hill Holdings Ltd. utilizing conventional vacuum disc filtration systems. An upgrading and mill expansion program completed in 1981, which also permitted the introduction of ore streams changes, had resulted in difficulties dewatering copper and lead sulphide slurries to comply with transportable moisture limits. Following an extensive investigation which included both laboratory and pilot plant testing a program was commenced to replace the 2 vacuum disc filtration systems with 2 pressure filtration systems for use on copper and lead slurry dewatering and also to retain other existing vacuum disc filters as standby. An analysis of mill operations performance resulted in slurry storage tanks with a capacity equivalent to 20 hours of normal production being incorporated into the project. The pressure filters are mounted above the concentrate stock- piles. A sealed sloping floor incorporating launders is used to prevent any accidental contamination of the concentrate from pipe leakages, spillage, or from water hoses used for clean up purposes around the area. The project was completed in 1985 and operating performance has been better than that predicted from testwork. Equipment availability at 95076 together with the slurry storage capacity provided results in minimal requirement for the standby vacuum filtration system. Some typical operating results are given.

Until recently the Corus IJmuiden pellet plant produced approximately 4.5 Mtpa of pellets. Corus IJmuiden is currently running a program to increase its pig iron production to 6.4 million tonnes HM per annum. The burden of the Corus IJmuiden blast furnaces consists of approximately 50 per cent high basicity sinter and 50 per cent acid pellets, both produced in-house. To accommodate the increased pig iron production, the capacity of the pellet plant needed to be increased to 5.0 Mtpa. The productivity was increased by modifications to the plant layout, which were implemented during the 2006 cold maintenance stop. In addition, the composition of the ore blends is optimised to gain productivity.
