Maghemite - A Source of Heavy Medium for Coal Washeries Use of magnetite as heavy medium in coal preparation plants has been increasing steadily in recent years. It might be in short supply in some areas or excessively costly in certain times. In Turkey, the cost of heavy medium magnetite has almost tripled since 2003. As a result, alternative sources of heavy medium material have been evaluated. A maghemite ore from Elbistan-Kahramanmaras was found to be an interesting source. Tests showed that the maghemite ore can be enriched via magnetic separation at 1556 gauss to obtain a heavy medium material with 4.93 g/cm3 density and 97.22 per cent magnetic recovery. Further tests were conducted to determine the optimum field strength for magnetic separation, friability and regeneration recovery.

During 2015 and 2016, the authors conducted a number of surveys, workshops and reviews of ventilation and gas management practices in Australian underground coalmines. The study was funded by ACARP with a brief to identify gaps in ventilation and gas management practices for current and future needs, and to prepare a road map for change that would assist in delivering improvements.The study found that despite many examples of leading practice, gas and ventilation management is not afforded the attention and priority that is warranted and that this must be remedied if future operational performance targets are to be achieved and the safety of the industry protected. Low sulfidation epithermal deposits are important sources of gold and silver, and are considered the extinct analogues of modern geothermal systems. The aerial extents of alteration halos that surround twenty-two epithermal deposits range from 4 to 315 km2, with many less than 60 km2. Deposits with alteration halos <30 km2 typically have well defined limits, whereas deposits with alteration exceeding 30 km2 are commonly complicated by overlapping alteration centres related to adjacent epithermal deposits or other deposit types (i.e. high sulfidation, porphyry). Irrespective of the physical coverage of vein or alteration halos, both large (>60 km2) and small (<20 km2) deposits can contain large amounts of gold and silver. The size ranges for twenty-one analogous liquid-dominated geothermal fields from around the world have a restricted size range of 5 to 60 km2 and irrespective of physical size, commonly have multiple zones of focused fluid upflow. From an exploration perspective the comparison between epithermal deposits and geothermal fields provide the following four important points. 1) Alteration halos surrounding epithermal deposits as well as those for analogous geothermal systems show a range of sizes, although most are less than 60 km2. Therefore, where alteration exceeds 60 km2 multiple vein systems related to several paleogeothermal systems are predicted. 2) Multiple upflow zones are common in geothermal fields of all sizes (5 to 60 km2) and although difficult to demonstrate in epithermal deposits there is a strong possibility of discovering several discrete adjacent mineralised centres. 3) The orientation of veins parallels the principle orientation of the surrounding alteration and where alteration is wider than the vein strike length, this could suggest the occurrence of adjacent veins. 4) The physical size of both veins and alteration zones is not important in relation to amount of contained gold, as both large and small can contain large amounts of gold. These conclusions provide insight into the physical size limits and hydrologic structure of these paleogeothermal systems and highlight the potential for multiple mineralisation centres within a single alteration halo.

With the continued implementation of stricter limitations on the discharge of excess process water from all existing and future mining and metallurgical operations, the design and operation of the entire process water circuit must form an integral part of any total operational package. It is far better to æanticipate and circumvent the problemÆ rather than be forced into an expensive remediation program after the event. By far the greatest problem relates to the treatment and disposal of what is generically known as acid drainage. In simple terms, an acidic metal sulfate solution is generated by a series of chemical and biological reactions as soon as most sulfide minerals are exposed to air and water. Treatment of this solution by one or more of a wide range of chemical and physical options can involve substantial capital and operating costs, although there are recent processing options that yield saleable by-products, thereby reducing the financial liability of what is effectively a waste stream. This presentation provides an overview of the Australian situation compared with the rest of the world and outlines the basic features of a number of the more advanced passive and active acid drainage options.

The correct specification and then selection of primary or major fans for an underground mine is a critical decision not only in terms of fan capital and operating costs, but also safety and reliability which usually has a major impact on mine production. In addition, fan manufacturers may spend tens of thousands of dollars preparing proposals for a purchase enquiry for primary fans especially where they have complete responsibility for the installation (turnkey projects). There are many good reasons to thoroughly and fairly adjudicate fan tenders. The use of mining by-products for beneficial use may face approval, and acceptance barriers. This paper described the use of a sustainability framework to assess the safety, effectiveness and economic value of modified bauxite residue (Alkaloam«) for use on agricultural land in the Peel-Harvey region of Western Australia. The results indicate the merit associated with using this by-product from a safety and, private, community and environmental value perspective. They may be used to indicate the worth of pursuing any future community acceptance and agency approval process.   The use of Alkaloam« for beneficial use on agricultural land in Western Australia was first investigated over 25 years ago. Efforts to gain regulatory approval and community acceptance of Alkaloam« have had a complicated and enduring history. Understanding and assessing the value of a by-product using social and economic considerations, in conjunction with an environmental assessment, provided a more complete evaluation to that previously used.

A Loss of Strength of Gold Sulfide Concentrate Before Grinding and Cyanidation Using Magnetic Impulse Treatment Gold recovery from sulfide concentrates is going with cyanidation usually. The fine grinding to 95 per cent -0.020 mm is required for refractory concentrates, in which gold encapsulated by sulfides. According energy consumption is 10 and more kW h/ton. At this paper we suggested to use magnetic-impulse treatment with small energy consumption 0.1-0.2 kW h/ton for loss of sulfide strength before grinding and cyanidation. The object of studies was the gold-pyrite flotation concentrate which was produced from ores at the Kumtor Mine, Kyrgyzstan. The concentrate composition, physic-mechanical properties and loss of strength mechanism were studied there. The tested concentrate assayed, per cent: 62.5 pyrite, 10 feldspar, 10 mica, 5 quarts, 5 carbonates, 4 haematite and another. Haematite has intimate intergrowth with pyrite ? partially with quarts. The magnetic susceptibility of haematite and less pyrite causes in these grains and mineral complex the effect of magneticstriction. As a result numbers of deformations are increased and minerals and gold are also exposed. Lateral and longitudinal strains in the minerals by magneticstriction were calculated in this work. By quantitative analysis of pyrite mono fractions were showed next micro impurities: alumina, arsenic, nickel and others elements. These micro impurities are generated a charged dislocation, cracks and micro cracks. The inter-granular links at a boundary of haematite-pyrite, pyrite-quarts, haematite-quarts have disintegrated. The dislocation is depended from mineral modulus elasticity. It was determined an indicator of mineral electro-mechanic sensitivity which characterises a conversion of electro-magnetic energy to mechanic energy. Pyrite has most dielectric constant and electro-mechanic sensitivity as haematite and quarts. The dislocations in pyrite are account for clacks and a loss of mineral strength. Size analysis of the flotation concentrate after magnetic-impulse treatment is shown the increasing the content of thin fractions by comparison no treated concentrate. Magnetic-impulse treatment has increased the effect of the next fine grinding too. The electronic microscopy has confirmed a loss of strength of gold sulfide concentrate. The gold recovery by cyanidation increased too after preliminary magnetic-impulse treatment of concentrate by laboratory tests. The magnetic-impulse concentrate studies at the Kumtor plant have showed that a recovery gold increase in the processing of cyanidation. The consumption of energy also reduced.

New data on the geology of the Late Jurassic to Holocene sediments cover of the World and associated mineral resources (oil, gas, ferromanganese nodules, ores of massive sulphides and other metals) have been compilled in the Atlas at scale 1:25,000,000 and 1:10,000,000. The work was performed by scientists from four Institutes of Russia (VNIIzarubezhgeologia, VNIIoceangeologia, Vernadsky Institute of Geochemistry and Analytical Chemistry of theRussian Academy of Sciences and Geological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences). The Atlas shows variation of thickness and formational composition of the large complexes (Upper Jurassic-Early Cretaceous, Upper Cretaceous Eocene, Oligocene-Neogene, Pliocene-Pleistocene), distribution of oil/gas and ore deposits in each complex, data of deepsea drilling (leg 1-130),  thermo-pressure condition in the sedimentary basins within Circum-Pacific Rim.

The New Zealand Minerals Industry is small but growing. Over the next 10 years it will be facing stiff international competition for skills to support this growth, particularly from Australia who are forecasting that a further 70 000 people will be employed by 2015.   The value of commodities mined and quarried in NZ continues to increase; and the value of coal, metals and industrial minerals production reached $1.505 billion in 2006, an increase of 15 per cent on 2005. Production increases will continue à. Latest Crown Minerals statistics show that national prospecting and exploration expenditure rose to $29.9 million in the year ended March 31 2006 û an increase of 46 per cent from the $20.4 million spent in the March 2005 year. The equivalent 2001 year expenditure was only $2.48 million.   The industry already experiences difficulty in recruiting the people it needs with ongoing demand for skilled underground miners, trades people, and mining professionals. This discussion paper will outline the national context with regard to labour, skills and training. It will suggest options and provide an opportunity for conference participants to discuss the way forward.

Since 2003, there has been an unprecedented growth in the demand for engineering, technical and project services in the mineral industries. This demand for services became evident in Australia earlier than many other markets and has since spread globally. This growth has created significant issues for the strategic direction and planning by the service provider. Such strategic questions include:- how fast to grow, how to recruit, train and integrate new staff, what market sectors to service, the selection of targeted customer sectors and managing strategic growth with short term demands and commercial reality. These factors are discussed using in depth experiences and examples that illustrate these strategic approaches. The relevance of this new industry environment to New Zealand services will be highly discussed.

The increased cost of imported oil fuels, coupled with our understandable reluctance to commit ourselves to the use of nuclear energy, has resulted in a renewed reliance on coal as a primary source of energy. New Zealand is fortunate in being fairly well endowed in its coal resources, but their exploitation until now, has been on a relatively small scale. Future exploitation, whether from underground or open cast mines, must be on a very much larger scale. This paper outlines some of the factors which should be considered in planning large open cast mines.

Geopolymerisation is a new technology that processes and transforms aluminosilicate minerals into mechanically strong and chemically stable products. In this investigation, minerals such as fly ash and kaolinite were used as the solid raw materials for geopolymerisation. Inorganic salts were added to the geopolymeric pastes to simulate ionic contamination during processing for building and construction applications. The resultant products were examined and characterised physically. It was found that the early strength development of geopolymeric pastes could be changed according to the nature as well as the extent of the contamination. At a small dosage, the effect of the contamination on the early geopolymeric system depended heavily on the nature of the artificial surfaces that were created in the geopolymeric solution through the addition of the chemical additives. For example, the samples containing MgCl2 and Mg(NO3)2 had shown the same yield stress developments due to the similar surfaces that were formed. The cations of these salts were expected to hydrolyse and form magnesium hydroxide precipitates immediately after the addition to the early geopolymeric systems. The calcium cations of CaCl2 also precipitated upon addition, but the nature of the surfaces of these hydroxides was quite different to those of the magnesium hydroxides and gave rise to different yield stress development. The samples that contained the insoluble salts (in water) demonstrated different yield stress development when compared to each other because of the different nature of the additive surfaces that were exposed to the geopolymeric solution. These results suggested that heterogeneous nucleation could be responsible for the change of the rheological behaviour upon inorganic salt addition. When the extent of the ionic contamination was large, the anions released from the insoluble salts (in water) changed the nature as well as the concentration of the geopolymeric solution and the setting processes were retarded. Oxides, in general, behaved very differently from other salts, indicating the uniqueness of the oxygen anions in a system rich in hydroxyl and silicate anions. The inorganic salt contamination in geopolymers did not show any significant signs of structural change according to the XRD diffractograms collected. The seven-day compressive strength was not lowered by the inorganic salt contamination and it could sometimes be beneficial to the product performance, for example, an increase of 20 MPa was induced by the addition of calcium oxide. Inorganic salts as chemical additives have demonstrated the potential to modify setting times of geopolymers without sacrificing much of the productsÆ strength and integrity.

The problems of magnetite build-up have plagued the non-ferrous pyrometallurgical industry for many years. To better understand these problems, a study was undertaken to determine the thermodynamic variables that affect the behaviour of magnetite under different smelting conditions. Equilibration studies were performed in the nickel smelting systems of matte-gas and matte-slag(silica saturation)-gas. The relationship of thermodynamic variables such as temperature, sulphur and oxygen partial pressure and matte grade on iron and magnetite activities were calculated and the significance on smelting parameters such as metal losses and partition coefficients were defined. The experimental data from this study were employed to develop practical methods which could be used to control the build up of magnetite, as well as to obtain additional metallurgical benefits. In general, a lower sulphur partial pressure and higher temperature operation was shown to enhance the metallurgical benefits of nickel smelting by decreasing the magnetite activity. Operating in this manner can also have added benefits such as higher metal recoveries, more efficient vessel utilisation and efficiency and lower smelter emissions at equivalent or higher primary furnace matte grades.

Predictive maintenance (also known as ‘condition/health monitoring’) refers to the intelligent monitoring of equipment to avoid future failures. In contrast to conventional preventive maintenance, the maintenance schedule is not determined by a prescribed timeline; instead, it is determined by analytic algorithms, such as machine learning, using data collected from equipment sensors and/or via simulation.Predictive maintenance offers the following benefits for operators and equipment manufacturers:- reduces equipment downtime by identifying issues before failure, thereby enabling convenient scheduling of equipment service and extending equipment lifetime- determines the root cause of the failure, enabling appropriate service to be performed without utilising resources to determine a diagnosis- avoids the unnecessary costs of maintenance and unexpected failures- improves safety and product quality.Algorithms and data are critical to predictive maintenance success. Sensor data is first preprocessed using advanced statistical and signal processing techniques; it is then combined with predictive modelling techniques, such as machine learning, to estimate equipment health.Once tested, predictive maintenance algorithms may be used in an operational setting within an IT environment, such as a server or cloud. Alternatively, algorithms may be implemented in an embedded system directly on the equipment, allowing for faster response times and significantly reducing the amount of data sent over the network.CITATION:Willingham, D and Xie, Y, 2017. Martha Mine is an open pit gold-silver mine, located within the township of Waihi, 150km southeast of Auckland and is operated as a joint venture between Normandy Mining Ltd. 67 %) as Manager and Otter Gold Mines Ltd. (33%). The deposit was historically mined, by underground methods from 1888 to 1952, producing 5.5 moz of gold and 30 moz of silver, from 11 mt of ore. The current operation began in 1988, producing, to June 1999 - 867,245 oz of gold and 5.5 moz of silver from 9.5 mt of ore. The licensed reserves were due to be mined out by late 2000. Consents were granted in December 1998 to allow the expansion of the operation through to 2007 accessing an additional 7.5 mt of ore at 3.4 gpt Au and 26.0 gpt Ag for 800,000 oz of gold and 6.4 moz of silver. The key elements of the expansion are: 1. Pit enlargement 2. Upgraded crushing and material handling facilities 3. Construction of a second tailings storage facility 4. Upgraded water treatment capacity 5. Increased operating capacity This paper presents an update of expansion activities to date.

The AusIMM is concerned about the longer tem sustainability of the minerals sector in Australasia. Our contention is that the sustainability of the sector is at risk if we do not:   ò encourage more exploration in Australasia by removing impediments and         increasing incentives; ò fund our university and research centres appropriately to increase both our   prospectivity, and our processing efficiencies; and ò manage our human resources better.   This paper will focus on how we can better manage our human resources to assist in ensuring sustainability of the sector in Australasia .   From a production point of view:   Economic output = f (Land, Labour, Capital, Environment) where Land refers to all of the natural resources used in production. As well as land itself it includes water, forest, fisheries, oil, gas and mineral deposits. Labour refers to the skills and capabilities used by humans in the production process. Capital describes all of the manufactured aids used in the process of production1. The challenge for management is to ensure maximum efficiency and effectiveness of labour in the production process whilst maintaining sustainable development.   The 1992 Rio Summit defined sustainable development as maintaining and enhancing:   ò natural capital û defined as all natural resources, both environmental and   those of traditional economic value; ò manufactured capital û made by human kind, including produced goods,     infrastructure and built environment; ò human capital û defined as the health, well being, intellectual capabilities and   spiritual welfare of individuals; and ò social capital û defined as social relations and consultations within and   between societies, their norms and functionality2.   The minerals sector in Australasia has successfully focused on the technical aspects of each of these components of sustainable development with primary attention applied to natural capital and efficient utilisation of manufactured capital. The technical aspects of human capital and social have also been addressed through an emphasis on occupational health and safety and interaction with local communities however I suggest that, to date, insufficient emphasis has been placed on labour (human capital) to maximise economic output1.   It has become increasingly common practice to identify land as natural capital, labour as human capital and capital as physical capital. That is labour has been treated as a commodity rather than an opportunity to create a comparative advantage and this will be the greatest challenge for mine management to show leadership over the next decade of the 21st Century.   This paper will outline characteristics of the sector which are relevant to the management and utilisation of labour, outline the outcomes of recent AusIMM surveys, review the reasons for the current and future anticipated skills shortages, some innovative responses to the challenges and finally, suggestions on how mine management can show leadership.

The extent to which man's activities are influencing the earth's climate is subject to considerable debate. Internationally however, this debate has been put aside somewhat by the Kyoto Protocol. This international agreement is the political response to the threat of Global warming, predicated on the precautionary principle.NZ is seeking to be a leader in the Kyoto Protocol. Given our unique GHG emission profile and the structure of our economy, and the major uncertainties in both the science of climate change and the Kyoto Protocol itself, this desire to lead is absolutely inappropriate in this instance. We face a different, and often more severe, set of challenges in an economy that prices C emissions than virtually all of our trading partners. Unfortunately, these differences have not been reflected in climate change policy development to date. This represents a major threat to New Zealand's economy, wealth and jobs, particularly in the sectors that have been the core drivers of our economy over the last 20 years or so - agriculture, energy, primary processing. We do not, and should not, seek to avoid the issue but we must protect our economy and move with or follow our trading partners and competitors, not lead them.
