The ultimate production from a natural reservoir of petroleum is inversely proportional to the gas-oil ratios existing during the producing life of the reservoir whenever gas is the major expulsive force in the recovery. In other words, in the period during which gas is the major expulsive force the ultimate production will be increased if the gas-oil ratio is decreased, and vice versa. This condition prevails in the greater number of the present producing districts. While this relation is difficult to prove from actual operation, on account of the present paucity of detailed observations, it must be admitted after a study of the forces and conditions governing the recovery of petroleum from natural reservoirs. Where gas and oil exist under pressure in sand interstices and water movement is not freely possible, the force expended in moving the oil to the well is the expansion and movement of the gas through the pressure differential existing between the interior of the reservoir and the well. If pressure and solution conditions in the untapped reservoir are such that the relation between gas and oil volumes at atmospheric conditions is as 100:1; and if during the producing period, until the gas is exhausted, the relation between the gas and oil volumes produced is 300:1, it follows that only one-third of the oil has been produced and the remaining two-thirds cannot be recovered unless some extraneous force is introduced into the reservoir. This serves to illustrate the importance of gas-oil ratio control during normal producing operations. WELL known to every metallurgist is the fact that different production schedules will profoundly affect the character of annealed metal strip. Yet the number of conditions [ ] that may be wrought by different combinations of rolling and annealing schedules is so myriad that despite the continual research that is being applied to this subject, the complete picture is not yet known. Copper, like all other metals, during the process of rolling or annealing, develops certain crystallographic configurations which should not be dismissed as being too impractical, for the crystallographic condition existing within the metal is a principal influence upon both the external mechanical properties and the behavior of the material [ ] when it is subjected to such operations as bending, flanging, drawing, and so forth. The Manufacturer's Viewpoint A prominent manufacturer of mining 'machinery not long ago expressed himself as being confident that he was securing the best kind of publicity for his product through the advertising pages of the monthly Bulletin of the American Institute of Mining Engineers. Such an expression coming from such a man is highly gratifying; yet it is justifiable when the high quality of reader and subscriber is taken into consideration. In fact, the majority of those using our advertising pages feel the same. It is to be regretted, of course, that others catering to our field do not realize the means at their disposal for presenting the points of interest of their product to the mining man. The question has been asked, " Do your members read their Bulletin?" They not only read the editorial pages, but they "admit being up-to-date enough to peruse the advertising section to "see what is new." The next question the prospective advertiser asks is, " Will the Bulletin bring inquiries?" The answer to this question holds good for any publication having as subscribers those who have purchasing or recommending power-yes, if the article advertised is not a stock one, that has been before the public for any length of time. To secure inquiries on, say, a standard centrifugal pump or any other standard product, the features of which are well known, is a most difficult proposition. Yet, of course, some inquiries are secured, but mostly from those having use for the catalogue or trade literature for reference purposes. It is safe to say that the traceable returns from advertising in trade publications hardly, if at all, pay for the advertising. The real returns are intangible, and result from the constant publicity, and keeping ?everlastingly at it." Who can say what subconscious effect is taking place when an advertisement is "glanced at," to say nothing of the effect produced when the copy is attractive and interests the reader. Time after time it has been proved that sales have been secured as a result of an advertisement, yet no inquiry had been made directly traceable to advertising.

Measurements of the rate of decomposition of austenite at constant temperature are commonly represented by plotting the percentage transformed on linear coordinates against time on either a linear or a logarithmic scale, a method that yields a curve that in shape resembles an integral sign (Fig. 1). A graph of this kind is not always convenient because extrapolation to the beginning or end of the transformation, or even intebrpolation, may be uncertain unless there are a large number of observations, which seldom happens; furthermore, the degree of consistency of a set of measurements is difficult to judge from such a curve. It is desirable therefore to find some mode of plotting, or even better to find a standard variety of graph paper, that gives a straight line instead of the integral shape. The straight line has many advantages; the number of readings required to fix the position of the curve is greatly reduced, interpolatiorr is easy and rapid, extrapolation can be carried out with greater confidence and, finally, the consistency of the measurements is readily estimated from the scatter of the points. The last advantage is particularly valuable when the data are obtained by direct microscopic examination alone, because they are influenced by the skill of the observer in estimating the relative size of areas, possibly also by undetected inhomogeneity of the specimen. A search for ways of representing the observations as a straight line yielded two methods which are described in this paper. The paper also includes an account of some interesting relations brought to light in applying these methods to the available experimental data. Usually the best way to derive such a method of plotting is to base it on established principles of chemistry and physics, as has been done, for example, for the temperature variation of the equilibrium constant of a chemical reaction. But so little is known of the mechanism of the decomposition of austenite, and so little is available in the way of well established background for changes of this kind, that it is simpler to rely upon purely empirical means. OvErpolEd copper, as commonly defined,- is copper which has been excessively reduced during the poling period of the refining process. Owing to its porosity, such coppcr is unfit for commercial purposes. The cause of this phenomenon is undoubtedly the lack of oxides in the copper, yet this does not completely explain it. Refined copper of the same "pitch" and "set" varies considerably in oxygen contents, and analyses of overpoled bars also show similar wide differences; moreover, it is possible to melt copper in 'crucibles so as to obtain bars that are practically free from oxygen although they show a "tough pitch" and "level set" surface. Frederick Johnson advances the following theory: The regulation of the quantity of oxygen in copper is the keynote of all copper refining. It is the presence of a well defined proportion of oxygen in the form of cuprous oxide, forming a copper-cuprous oxide eutectic, which enablcs copper to be cast free from blowholes. It seems that when oxygen is present, other gases are less soluble in molten copper; when oxygen is absent, or is present in insufficient quantity, the copper dissolves other gases, such as hydrogen and carbon monoxide, which are insoluble in the copper when solid, and, being rejected during the process of solidification, causes internal porosity and external ridges and excrescences.1 The "level set" of wire bars, etc., is entirely the result of a compromise between the occluded gases and cuprous oxide. With excess of the former the metal would be "overpitch" and spongy, while an excess of the latter would result in the metal being "underpitch" and brittle.2 The result of the absorption and subsequent expulsion of reducing gases, carbon monoxide and hydrogen,' and the effect of this action on the overpoling of copper are in dispute; the literature on the subject is full of contradictory statements and will continue to be so until better analytical methods have been developed. Sulfur, however, is tangible. The refiner can see it in his button sample and consequently attributes to it any trouble that may happen during the melting of the copper.

THE large increase in the use of selective flotation as contrasted with the collective flotation of a few years ago has focussed attention on the desirability of achieving accurate control of the pH of mill circuits. Although it is well-known that alkaline circuits result in dropping pyrite and that acid circuits conversely float it, but drop the gangue, there is little that is known, beyond question, ass to the action of the acidity or alkalinity of the circuits. A complete answer is not available at present but experiments -are now in progress at the University of Utah, whose aim is to find out what the effect is on recovery of a change in hydrogen-ion concentration and how this change is brought about. Broadly speaking, a change in hydrogen-ion concen¬tration seems to affect either the mineral surface, as was suggested by A. W. Fahrenwald in his paper "Surface Reactions in Flotation"1 (TRANS. 70, 647) or the attachment of the collecting agent on the mineral surface.

IT has been suggested by a number of people that it would be worth while for some one to attempt to summarize or condense the proceedings of this symposium. This task has fallen to me as organizer and co-chairman. Its difficulty will be appreciated by anyone who attempts to read the whole proceedings. It is therefore with trepidation that I offer the following digest. In recent years there has been a renewal of interest in America on this subject of the cohesive strength of materials, and a growing appreciation of the need for a better theory of cohesion failure. The theories of elastic action and plastic action are well developed, particularly the former. The theory of plastic action is still in the course of development, but it is well along. Plastic action is terminated by cohesion failure and what is needed is a theory that will tell us when to expect the cohesion failure. In the past it has generally been assumed that cohesion failure will occur when a critical value of the maximum tensile stress has been reached. Many experiments have shown that this is not strictly true, and this symposium concerns itself with the failures of this simple hypothesis, and with the efforts that have been made to devise a more satisfactory theory. The most active contributor in recent years to knowledge in this field is Dr. McAdam, and he was asked to open the symposium with a summary or condensation of his papers and views. Undoubtedly it is presumptuous to attempt a still greater condensation, but perhaps it will be useful, because even his contribution to this symposium contains no summary, no concise statement of just what his contribution has bees. Dr. McAdam makes two main points. The first is that the cohesive strength is not a single valued quantity, but that it is a function of all three principal stresses and hence must be represented diagrammatically by a surface in a three-dimensional figure. An instrument has recently been developed for determining the inclination and azimuthal direction of boreholes. This instrument is known as the Tro-Pari Instrument and is the invention of C. Trotter and G. Pajari of Sudbury, Ontario. Description The instrument is characterized by a unit mounted in gimbals and provided with a clockwork mechanism to clamp a compass to indicate azimuthal direction and simultaneously to clamp the unit in its plumb position to indicate inclination (Fig I). By means of a timing ring suitably calibrated in 5-min divisions, the unit may be set to lock after a lapse of time sufficient to allow the placing of the instrument at the desired point in the drill hole where readings are to be taken. The maximum time Lapse obtainable with the instrument designed for use in EX or AX size holes is I hr 30 min which is considered to be ample time to lower to the greatest depths that may be drilled with this size of equipment. Larger sizes could be developed for larger diameter holes such as BX and NX sizes or the larger oil-well sizes and a correspondingly greater time lapse could be provided for. Up to the present time only the EX-AX size has been built. Operation Assuming a borehole is to be surveyed at 1000-ft depth and assuming it will take 30 min to lower the instrument to this depth, the timing ring is rotated through seven divisions which represent a time lapse of 35 min (5-min leeway) and is then returned to its zero position. This operation imparts energy to a spring which drives the clockwork mechanism. Simultaneously the compass needle is freed to swing to its magnetic north-south position and the encased mechanism is freed to hang plumb within a semicircular portion of the frame which is graduated in degrees after the fashion of a protractor. This semicircular protractor portion has a V-shaped notch at each degree division of its inner periphery. The instrument, now in its free position, is inserted in a bronze container made to suit the size of hole to be surveyed (Fig 2). Soft rubber washers are provided within the container to prevent undue shock. The container is connected to the drill rods with three 5-ft lengths of brass or aluminum alloy rods separating it from the steel rods in order to prevent distortion of the magnetic field. The assembly is then lowered to the desired point where readings are to be taken and is allowed to remain at rest until a period of time has elapsed slightly in excess of the time for which the timing ring was set. In the example cited above, when the 35 min has elapsed the compass needle is locked in its north-south position and the protractor locking pin is extruded and locks in the V notch opposite its plumb position. The device may now be removed from the borehole and it will remain in this locked position in spite of jarring or shak-

C. E. SIMS*—This is a most interesting and important paper. It is important from two standpoints. First, it has as-spects of being highly accurate and therefore extremely useful to the operating man in showing how far he can go in oxidizing carbon from a steel bath while retaining chromium and the effect of temperature on this limit. Fig 5 is undoubtedly the highlight of the paper, and in checking it against available data, it seems capable of predicting actual results. The other important aspect is the apparently significant fact that reactions within a steel bath, such as between carbon and an oxide, are homogeneous reactions which do not require equilibrium with an external phase. In this case, it seems obvious that the reaction and the equilibrium established were between dissolved carbon (or carbide) and dissolved CrO. The classic reaction which requires equilibrium with solid Cr2O3, did not fit the data. It was recognition of this principle that made Fig 5 possible. G. R. FITTERER*—It might be in assuming the CrO is dissolved in the metal that you are actually approaching the correct factor for activity. If that is true and if the percentages that were used represent an equilibrium constant, this would mean, in effect, that the minimum temperature at which chromium would be reduced by an equivalent percentage of carbon would be about 2400°F from your equation. I believe that is in line with my experience particularly if you deal only with low percentages. J. CHIPMAN†—The author in discussing the equilibrium of the reaction offers two choices of explanation. One postulates an effect of chromium on the activity coefficient of carbon; it would require perhaps more data than are available to us at the present time to test this thoroughly. The other postulate which he offers is a reaction with CrO. This explanation is consistent with physical and chemical principles provided that a solid phase CrO is present, and that is essentially what he is postulating. If that oxide were present one would expect and, I think, almost require the kind of results that he obtained. The weakness of that postulate lies in the lack of confirmatory evidence regarding the presence of solid CrO as such. This should offer an interesting subject for further study. It seems a pity that the theoretical arguments revolving around CrO should have obscured for a moment the very real excellence of this paper. E. CARTER*—I think there is a problem that presents itself in practical application where the metal temperature is from 3200 to 3300 and the temperature desired in pouring is considerably less. B. M. LARSEN†—I get the impression from some of the work that was done earlier that there is probably a localized zone of high temperature at the slag metal interface which effects the removal of the carbon. Without that I wonder if the effect is possible to have a localized superheat and an equilibrium there favorable to low carbon content and

A fundamental goal of the Plowshare Program is to predict crater dimensions when an explosive of known yield is buried at a given depth in a given medium. In this paper a technique is presented that seems to calculate adequately, from first principles, the mound and cavity growth that occur during nuclear and high-explosive cratering events. The technique features a standard, numerical approach to high- intensity stress-wave propagation coupled with a unique model of material behavior in brittle failure. A schematic of stress-wave propagation is presented in Fig. 1. The equation of motion provides a functional relation between the applied stress field and the resulting acceleration of each point in the medium. Accelerations, when allowed to act over a small time increment [A]t, produce new velocities, velocities produce displacements, displacements produce strains, and strains produce a new stress field. Time is incremented by [A]t, and the cycle is repeated. The time increment [A]t is determined by an independent stability condition which requires the increment to be smaller than the time necessary far a compressional wave to travel across the smallest zone. We assume that failure occurs in a brittle material when either the tensile strength or the maximum allowable strain energy of distortion is exceeded. When either of these two conditions is violated, the code uses the cracked equation of state to determine the stress. A preshot testing program is used to determine the consolidated and cracked equations of state. During the summer of 1875 I visited some of the iron mines of Houghton County, Mich., and was quite interested to observe the progress made there within a few years. Working in open pits is gradually giving place to underground work in most of the mines where this system is practicable. In some cases, as in the Lake Superior Mine, the body of ore is so irregular, and the deposit so liable at any time to be pinched out, or nearly so, that it. has been found impractical, if not impossible, to lay out any plan for systematic underground work. But in many other mines the deposit is so regular in character, that the work can be laid out in shafts at regular intervals, and a series of 60 feet levels. The Michigammi Mine, opened in 1872, and first worked in 1873, is arranged on this plan, though some quarrying is still done. But the men are being put at overhead stoping as fast as it can be got ready for them, and before long it will all be worked in this way. The New York Mine is undergoing a similar change to the pillar system, and several others have either been changed, or it is about to be done. My principal object in visiting this region was to obtain samples from some of the important mines, so as to be able to answer the question: "What is the average percentage of iron in the Lake Superior ores?" Most iron furnaces work on mixtures of ore, so that it is impossible to tell, from their records, just the percentage in each one.

INTRODUCTION AND SCOPE This chapter is intended as a brief review of the mathematics of compound interest and of the meaning of time equivalent money. In order to make valid economic evaluations of various investment alternatives, it is important that they be analyzed on an equivalent basis, taking into account the time value of money. Compound interest has been said to be one of the eighth wonders of the world. Certainly compound interest is a fact of life in today's economy. Whenever we deal with money over time-investments, earnings, savings, loans, etc.-we are immediately confronted with the principles and effects of compound interest. In such an environment it is necessary to be able to determine time value equivalence of various sums of money received or paid at different dates. It follows that all future payments or series of payments that would repay a present sum with interest at a stated rate can be said to be equivalent with each other. Equivalence, then, is a function of the interest rate. MATHEMATICS OF COMPOUND INTEREST FACTORS In order to develop mathematical formulas for various time value equivalence of compound interest we will use symbol designations: P is Present or principal sum of money; usually refers to value at time zero. F is a single sum of money at some designated future date. R is The amount of each payment in a uniform series of equal payments made at the end of each period. n is Number of interest compounding periods (may represent annual, semiannual, quarterly, or even daily periods). i is the period compound interest rate. TO determine the optimum inside dimension of an airshaft, it is necessary to strike the proper balance between the cost of power for air friction and turbulence losses within the airshaft, on the one hand, and the cost of sinking the airshaft, on the other. An airshaft larger than necessary is extravagant because the increased amortization rate exceeds the reduction in power cost. Conversely, an airshaft smaller than is needed wastes more power than can be justified by the corresponding reduction in amortization rate. The airshaft power is a function of the air volume Q cu. ft. per min. and the air- pressure drop p in. water gauge across the airshaft The airshaft pressure drop is calculated by the formula: [ ] wherein R is the air-friction coefficient for the portion of the airshaft 1 ft. deep, 0 ft. in perimeter and A sq. ft. in area, when passing an air volume of Q cu. ft. per minute. WHEN thinking of industrial relations, we must not confine the term to what is ordinarily called "welfare work;" viz., organizing baseball teams, departmental parties, athletic contests, and such things. These are all of interest but not very helpful in solving the problems of industry. We must think of industrial relations as that understanding developed between workers and management that permits of harmonious progress because of a mutual understanding of each other's problems. Most of the industrial unrest, discontent, mistrust, or antagonism is due to misunderstanding; and that misunderstanding is the direct result of not having taken the workers into our confidence. If they are merely cogs in a machine, employed to do certain things, and have no interest in anything but the receipt of the pay envelope, we cannot expect intelligent harmonious progress. There are still some people who think that the interests of management, or capital invested in a business, and the interests of the worker are diametrically opposed. That is an unfortunate belief; the interests are identical. If the worker does not understand what his part of the work represents, what the management's part represents, and what the invested capital's part represents, he is bound to have a misconception, of the matter and will think only in terms of the pay envelope. The methods used for producing a better understanding between workers and management do not much matter so long as the end is attained. Some plants prefer shop committees; others attempt to work through the foremen in the various departments; others, by personal contact-between the management and the men, especially if a shop is small. It does not really matter how the end is attained as long as the object is accomplished. The best type of industrial relations can probably be attained when the mystery is taken out of industry-when the workers understand what they. are a part of, what their function is, what they are contributing. They should also understand something of fundamental economics-that it is not just a question of getting all they can and giving just as little as possible but that their contribution makes for expansion, progress, and permanence, and opens a field of activity for themselves that other-wise would probably be blocked.

Trinidad, British West Indies, is an island near the north coast of South America, situated between latitudes 10" and 11" N., and opposite the numerous outlets of the Orinoco River Delta. It is separated from Venezuela by the Gulf of Paria (salt water) and straits over 5 mi. (8 km.) wide. The area of the island is approximately 1750 sq. mi. (453,-250 hectares) and the population is approximately 400,000. The climate is tropical with an annual rainfall of from 45 to 60 in. (114 to 152 cm.). The oil fields consist of several units, or fields, located in the southern half of the island. Approximately 90 per cent. of the total production has been yielded by fields situated within 7 mi. (11.3 km.) of the famous asphalt lake and on the southwest peninsula. The most important producing fields, or units, are the following, which are shown on the accompanying map: Brighton, or Pitch Lake Field, operated by the Trinidad Lake Petroleum Co., Ltd., is situated beside the famous Pitch Lake; it even encroaches on the lake. Vessigny Field, operated by the Trinidad Lake Petroleum Co., Ltd., is situated 2 mi. (3.2 km.) south of Pitch Lake. Lot One Field, operated by the Petroleum Development Co., Ltd., the United British Oilfields of Trinidad, Ltd., and Stollmeyer, Ltd., is situated 3 mi. south of Pitch Lake upon Lot One of Morne 1'Enfer Forest Reserve and adjoining properties. Parry Lands Field, operated by the United British Oilfields of Trinidad, Ltd., and the Petroleum Development Co., Ltd., is situated 31/2 mi. south of Pitch Lake on Lot Three of Morne 1'Enfer Forest Reserve and adjoining properties. Point Fortin Field, operated by the United British Oilfields of Trinidad, Ltd., is situated at Point Fortin, 6 mi. southwest of Pitch Lake. Fyzabad Field, operated by Trinidad Leaseholds, Ltd., is situated several miles southwest of Fyzabad Village and 6 mi. south-southeast of Pitch Lake. Barracpore Field, operated by Trinidad Leaseholds, Ltd., is situated several miles south of San Fernando and 15 mi. (24.14 km.) east of Pitch Lake.

The application of geostatistics to coal reserve analysis is discussed. One problem in particular, the selection of the optimum locations for exploratory drill holes, is considered in detail. A new interactive program to help the geologist determine the best locations is described and applied to a specific property. The steps in the process are described and then illustrated using a mine's actual data. First, a variogram is selected based on graphical displayed information from the known sample data. Kriging estimates are made for the region of interest and the blocks within the region. The location of future exploratory drill holes is selected based on the criterion of minimizing the region estimation variance for a given number of exploratory holes. The least number of exploratory holes required to meet a specified upper limit on the regional variance is also determined. The computer generated recommendations for the exploratory drill holes are compared to a manually prepared drilling plan. The post- drilling analysis of the results is compared to the predicted values.

The theory of elasticity, the science of the strength of materials, and all our calculations regarding engineering structures are based on Hooke's law, that in loaded bodies the deformations are proportional to the load producing them. Without this law it would be impossible to design intelligently engineering structures such as bridges, frames, axles, etc. This being the case, the proportional limit,l that is, the point at which deformation ceases to be proportional to load, is the most important factor in engineering design. Further, the working fiber stress should be fixed in reference to the proportional limit instead of, as is usual, in reference to the ultimate strength. The incorrect use of the ultimate strength instead of the proportional limit in setting the working fiber stress is probably due to two reasons: (1) it is a more delicate operation to measure the proportional limit; (2) it is usually assumed, though incorrectly, that the proportional limit is determined by the ultimate strength. In Germany the poin't at which permanent set first appears is often taken instead of the proportional limit. The two points will coincide if Gerstner's law, that elastic deformations are proportional to the loads producing them both before and after permanent set, is true; and the limit of proportionality and the elastic limit or point of permanent set will both be represented on a stress-strain diagram, by the point at which the line ceases to be a straight line and becomes curved or changes its inclination. It is to be further noted that the difference in definition between proportional limit and elastic limit introduces a difference in methods of determination in the testing laboratory. The German method of determining the elastic limit by alternately loading and unloading the test specimen is a lengthy process and time has in itself a very considerable influence on the results of physical tests.
