The work of Leon Guillet concerning the effect of nickel on the structural properties of brass is checked. The best value for the coefficient of equivalence t, that is, the amount of zinc replaced by 1 per cent. of nickel, is shown to be-1.1 per cent. The best hot- and cold-working nickel silvers, varying in nickel content between the limits of 4 and 18 per cent., are tabulated and plotted diagrammatically. Also, some data are given showing a comparison between the physical properties of a hot- and cold-working low copper-nickel silver, and a commercial cold-working nickel silver containing approximately 8 per cent. more copper. THIS investigation of low copper-nickel silvers was undertaken to check the work of Leon Guillet on special brasses and to determine, more accurately, the effect of the addition of nickel on the microstructure of the binary alloys of copper and zinc. It was hoped that the results could be successfully applied to the practical production of low copper-nickel silvers. To explain the results of his investigations on special brasses, Leon Guillet evolved his conception of "fictitious compositions." He states,1 in his general conclusions, that on the introduction of a small amount of a third metal to a copper-zinc alloy, it enters into solid solution with the normal constituents up to saturation, but by so doing it brings the ternary alloy into a state microscopically equivalent to a binary copper-zinc alloy of fictitious composition, and physically more nearly like the latter than the brass containing copper-zinc in the ratio actually present. The physical properties of the ternary alloy, when compared to the same properties of an actual brass of the fictitious composition, are modified by the natural properties of the third element. Beyond the point of saturation, a special constituent appears and the above generalization no longer holds.

THE occurrence of gold, gold-silver, silver-lead-zinc ores in the post-Cambrian sediments in the Black Hills of South Dakota, and their genetic relationship to the Tertiary intrusives, is well known and accepted, but the occurrence of gold in the pre-Cambrian rocks at the Homestake mine, which underlie this Tertiary gold mineralization, has given rise to differ-ences of opinion as to the period of major gold introduction into the older rocks. Fig. 1 illustrates. the distribution of mineralization along the axis of the Tertiary uplift in both pre-Cambrian and post-Cambrian rocks. The following possibilities have been presented: 1. The Homestake gold deposit was formed in pre-Cambrian time and the deposits in the overlying Cambrian sediments formed during Ter-tiary time. 2. The Homestake lode existed at the beginning of Cambrian time, but was enriched by the passage of Tertiary auriferous solutions. 3. The Homestake lode was represented by pre-Cambrian quartz-chlorite sulfide mineralization, very low in gold content and the gold superimposed on the older nearly barren mineralization during the Ter-tiary metallogenic epoch. 4. The sulfides and sulfarsenides as well as gold were deposited in both pre-Cambrian and post-Cambrian rocks during the Tertiary period. Those favoring the first proposition feel that the question is pretty well settled, while the proponents of the second theory are more flexible in their view, feeling that the amount of gold introduced in either period is still an open question. The third and fourth theories, with some modifi-cations, are supported by the proponents of the Tertiary theory, who feel that the evidence strongly favors that period. The following pages are intended to present the evidence and to give the reaction of various observers with my own comments and conclu-sions; also, the accumulated facts of observation gathered over a period of close association with the area under discussion, beginning in 1919.

Bulk samples of silver have beat undercooled lo a large degree in contact with crystalline siliceous and ceramic oxide materials, indicating lhat stable oxides and oxide compounds are not the heterogeneous nucleants which normally catalyze cryslallization within a feu degrees of the equilibrium freezing point. Since 400-g samples were undercooled 250°C in contact with cristobalite, it is concluded that the undercooling required for homogeneous nucleation of sil11er is greater than 250°C. Undercooling was Jacilitated by precleaning the crucibles with a high-fires -sure blast of gas. IN numerous experiments on the undercooling of metal melts it has been assumed that a solid glassy surface, being non crystal line, will have no effect in catalyzing crystal nucleation from the melt. Conversely, it is usually accepted that any crystalline surface, in contact with a metal melt, will catalyze nucleation of metal crystals from the melt at degrees of undercooling less than that at which homogeneous nucleation will occur. Both these assumptions were implicit in the claim that homogeneous nucleation was observed in experiments1'2 on the undercooling of small metal droplets (10 to 100 mp diam). The droplets were thought to be freed of suspended crystalline particles which would otherwise catalyze heterogeneous nucleation. They were supported on flakes of silica glass which were assumed to be amorphous, and therefore incapable of acting as substrates for heterogeneous nucleation. In later experiments, large samples of molten metal were undercooled to temperatures similar to those achieved by the droplet technique by melting in a fused-silica crucible3 or a boro-silicate glass slag.4 Since these samples were usually fully enclosed in glass at the moment of freezing, it seemed possible that nucleation was homogeneous when maximum degrees of undercooling were achieved, despite the large size of the samples (up to 500 g). Somewhat over ten years ago the author described studies1'2 on the constitution of the copper-silicon system. The copper-rich portion of this diagram is shown in Fig. 1. The experimental points freely dotted about the diagram seemed to justify an otherwise unconvincing diagram and for several years the curious reverse bend in the alpha-phase boundary was accepted as substantially correct, even by later investigators3 of the system who introduced changes in the high-silicon phases. The binary diagram has been used as a base for several ternary systems5-9 without any suggested changes. Voce10 suspected the existence of another phase from his study of the cast alloys in the copper-manganese-silicon system, but evidently hesitated to extrapolate this to the binary diagram, particularly in view of the too ingenious explanation that was advanced1' to account for the pools of constituent clearly visible in castings; namely, that they were secondary alpha of twinned orientation deposited from beta. Von Schwarz,12 in 1932, called attention to the fact that this micro-constituent in copper-silicon alloy castings was anisotropic under polarized light and asserted that a new phase, not cubic, should be placed in the diagram .adjacent to alpha. Sautner,l3 on the basis of investigations with the polarizing microscope and with X-rays, introduced this phase into the diagram at about 6 per cent Si. The relevant part of his diagram is shown in Fig. 2. Sautner called the new phase beta, renaming the old beta phase zeta. To avoid confusion, in redrawing Fig. 2 the phases have been renamed in accordance with the terminology adopted in the present paper, in which the new phase is called kappa and the other phases retain the designation given them by Arrhenius and Westgren.4 The thermodynamic impossibility of Sautner's diagram and the paucity of experimental data left the exact location of the new phase field most uncertain, although his work proved beyond doubt that an additional noncubic phase exists. The occurrence of Laves phases (AB,) in various binary alloy systems has been reviewed in recent papers.13 Iron forms Laves phases with Sc-, Ti-, V- and Cr-group elements. However, two of the corresponding Laves phases with cobalt, namely MoCo, and WCo,, are missing. Nickel forms binary Laves phases with Sc and Y, but not with any Ti-, V-, or Cr-group element. These conditions are schematically illustrated in Table I. That electron concentration is a significant factor in determining which type of Laves phase is formed in a given case was recognized long ago by Laves and Witte,4 This concept has been more recently applied to Laves phases formed by transition ele-ments. It now appears that the average electron concentration (average number of electrons per atom outside of the closed shells of the component atoms) may be an important factor also in determining whether or not a Laves phase can occur at all in a given system. As shown in Table I, in the transition element systems considered Laves phases are absent at electron concentrations of 8, or larger (to the right and below the double line in Table I). These absences clearly cannot be accounted for on atomic size considerations, as evidenced by the many inconsistencies apparent in Table 11. While the ideal radius ratio for Laves phases is 1.222, in the systems which do have Laves phases the ratios of CN 12 radii range from 1.10 to 1.46. The consistent absence of Laves phases at RA/RB< 1.10 might be attributed to the low values of these radius ratios. However, Table II shows that absences also occur irregularly throughout the radius ratio range covered. In a previous paper7 it was concluded that, in transition element systems forming u-phases, silicon may act as an acceptor of electrons, thus stabilizing the u-phase at electron concentrations higher than

Within the past two years, a number of publications have called attention to the double peaks, or stages, that appear in the hardness and strength curves of certain aging alloys. The author has shown the existence of double hardness peaks during the aging of a high-purity silver-copper alloy;&apos; and on the basis of electrical resistance, microscopic, dilation and lattice-parameter measurements, hc concluded that the initial hardness peak occurs prior to precipitation while the secondary hardening is due to precipitation. It was suggested that the general mechanism of age-hardening involves two consecutive processes, the first consisting of nucleus or knot2 formation, and the second consisting of actual precipitation and particle growth. It was further held that the two stages are interdependent, but because of nonuniform precipitation they may overlap each other to an extent that increases as the aging temperature is raised. At high aging temperatures, the effect of the first stage cannot be detected because of the rapid occurrernce of precipitation. The general theory of age-hardening recently presented by Dr. M. L. V. Gayler3 is in close agreement with the picture outlined above. With reference to work done on duralumin, copper-beryllium and copper-silver alloys, Dr. Gayler also concluded that age-hardening takes place in two consecutive steps: first, diffusion (in which the solute atoms migrate to certain crystallographic planes), and then precipitation. However, W. L. Fink and D. W. Smith4 have shown that the double aging peaks that appear in the strength curves of high-purity aluminum-copper alloys may be explained without recourse to pre-precipitation phenomena. By means of very careful metallographic technique, Fink and Smith demonstrated that during aging the precipitation takes place at an accelerated rate along the grain boundaries and slip planes as a result of the plastic deformation caused by the drastic quench from the solution heat-treatment temperature. IN recent years a considerable tonnage of the 18 per cent chromium and 8 per cent nickel steels has been used in lightweight high-strength structures that must be resistant to deterioration under atmospheric conditions. These steels are austenitic in character and their strength can best be increased by cold-working. Although a marked increase in tensile strength is obtained, claims have been made that the cold-worked steels do not possess fully satisfactory elastic properties. Under certain conditions, however, this has caused no great concern, because, as explained by Ragsdale,1,2 the cold-rolled steels have been widely applied for construction of lightweight, high-strength trains using spot welding for joining purposes. Ffield3 agrees that the ease with which thin sections of the cold-rolled 18-8 steels can be joined by spot welding is greatly in their favor, but that they would be more satisfactory if higher elastic properties and a higher modulus of elasticity could be obtained. He states that, as far as the mechanical properties are concerned, the straight chromium stainless steel is superior to the cold-worked 18-8 steel, and in order to illustrate, he presented the data of Fig. 1, which also give a stress-strain curve for a low-carbon 13 per cent Cr steel. Ffield? pro-posed that columbium-bearing or titanium-bearing cold-rolled 18-8 steels be given a heat-treatment (preferably for 1 hr.) in the range 400° to 600°C. to precipitate carbides in order to obtain better mechani-cal properties. Discussions by Sutton,4,5 de Ganahl,6,7 8 Krivobok and Lincoln,9 Knerr,10 and Thaden11 have given further information on the properties of the cold-rolled 18-8 steels compared with other materials used in light-weight, high-strength structures. These investigators and others point out that the ultimate tensile strength of the cold-rolled 18-8 steel can be increased to 200,000 lb, per sq. in. or higher; Krivobok et al. indicate that

It still rains in the Choco! I well remember one evening a dozen years ago, while traveling toward the town of Negua in a small champa or dug-out canoe, the rain fell so heavily that I had to work my hardest to bail out the water with a large totuma or gourd in order to keep the canoe afloat, the native boatman meanwhile plying his paddle in the stern. If any one thinks bailing is easy work, let him scoop out a quart or more at a stroke, 40 times a minute for half an hour, and I venture that he will change his opinion. These small canoes required only one paddler to make the 3 miles an hour which is the standard rate of aquatic progress on the Choco. Another time, on the Atrato river, about six o&apos;clock in the afternoon, the rain fell so heavily that an empty gourd, 9 in. in diameter and 4.5 deep, was filled to the brim in 90 sec., timed by a watch. Such downpours are typical, but unless caught in one it is not specially noticed. These downpours seldom last more than an hour, and frequently cover only a limited area, occasionally falling on one bank of a river and not on the other. During the night-time, the rain, if gentle, will usually last until dawn, and sometimes an intermittent drizzle will keep up all day as well, although, as a rule, it rarely rains during the day. The rise of the rivers, due to the rain-fall, varies from a few inches to several feet. One night in August, 1899, the spuds of the dredge Margaret, operating on the Atrato river, showed a rise of 16 ft., and for 3 days thereafter occurred the greatest flood known in that district for 32 years. The study of the relations between gases and metals is one of pcren-nial interest to all who are connected with the production of high-grade metallurgical products. The data reported here are the outcome of work of which the object is to determine the effects of dissolved gases upon the properties of metals and to gain a more detailed knowledge of the reactions between gases and molten metals, particularly iron, under definitely controlled conditions. We have attempted to reduce our margin of error by dealing with relatively large quantities of metal, from 4 to 13 Ih. (2 to 6 kg.), and keeping the ratio of refractories to metal as small as practicable. The ingots produced are large enough to provide adequate material for making determinations of magnetic and other physical properties. In choosing the bell-jar type of furnace we were influenced by the results of considerable experimentation along the same general line which indicated that, for the scale on which we were to work, it was important to have the furnace structure independent of the vacuum enclosure. The use of a bell-jar surrounding the entire furnace accomplishes this and also gives great freedom of observation during operation and ready accessibility for the replacements which are necessary after each run. Our choice of analytical method was made in the light of the results secured by H. M. Ryder, who used a method similar in principle for the analysis of very small quantities of gas extracted from strips of metal heated electrically in high vacuum. We have presented some selected preliminary experirnental data as being illustrative of the quantity and nature of the gases which occur in iron of different origins, but do not urgc any hypothesis at this time. HARDER† During the years immediately preceding the war, the iron ores of Brazil were attracting the attention of iron operators both in Europe and in the United States. This was due to the large quantities of practically undeveloped ore available, and to its great purity. It is reasonably safe to state that had capital not been diverted from the exploitation of these deposits to war purposes, Brazilian iron ores would probably now be offered in European and American markets. It is certain that after the war these ores will play a prominent part in the economic reconstruction of Europe and perhaps in the development of America. The Brazilian iron-ore field ranks among the six great iron-ore districts of the world, the others being: (1) The Lake Superior district of the United States; (2) the Lorraine ore field of northern France and southern Germany; (3) the magnetic deposits of northern Sweden; (4) the ore fields of Oriente, Cuba; and (5) the Wabana ores of Newfoundland. It is doubtless the greatest known undeveloped iron-ore district in the world. The operations of the Copper Range Co. are located in the Michigan copper district at the southern end of the Keweenaw Peninsula, 8 miles southwest of Hough ton (the center of the district). All the producing mines are situated in a long narrow zone paralleling the peninsula and occupying the central portion. This zone is about 25 miles long and 3 to 4 miles wide. The important mines, in their order from northeast to southwest, are, Mohawk, Ahmeek, Allouez, North Kearsarge, Wolverine, South Kearsarge, Centennial, Calumet & Hecla, Osceola, Franklin, Quincy, Isle Royale, Baltic, Trimountain, and Champion; the last three are operated by the Copper Range Co. The existence of copper deposits in this district became known soon after the discovery of America. Many references by early explorers show that copper was found in the possession of many of the American Indians that inhabited the Great Lakes region. There is abundant evidence that exploration of these copper deposits extended into prehistoric times; and some indication that the American Indians carried on operations shortly before the advent of white men. An account of the finding of primitive mining appears in the Government publications of 1850-51 by Foster and Whitney. Although earlier expeditions by white men had been made to the Keweenaw peninsula, an attempt to commercialize the district was not made until after 1765, when Alex. Henry, a British subject, searched the shores of Lake Superior for mineral treasure. His first expedition took him to the Ontonagon River, where he found the famous mass of copper now on exhibition at Washington. In 1771, he started operations along this river with a crew financed by English capital; but after much difficulty and only meager success he found only detached masses while in search for a major deposit. There is no record of any cxploration from 1774 to 1820. In 1838, Dr. Douglas Houghton was appointed state geologist. The town of Goldfield, Nevada, with the exception of six stone buildings, was burned to the ground to-day. One man is dead from causes attributed to the fire. A woman is missing and is believed to have perished and several persons were treated for burns as the result of the conflagration believed to have been of incendiary origin which started in the old Tenderloin District. The water supply was not sufficient and dynamite only scattered the frame structures and added kindling to the flames which were fanned by a forty-mile wind. Newspaper Dispatch, July 6. No former Goldfield resident could read that dispatch with unmixed feelings. About two o&apos;clock one morning the crowded train from San Francisco landed me in Goldfield no more hours late than it habitually was. The desert air was clear and crisp and bracing but the pandemonium of cab and bus drivers did not drown out the sounds of music and merriment which floated from the blaze of light which was Goldfield about three-quarters of a mile from the station. As I stood in the ferry house, at the foot of Market Street, awaiting the Oakland Ferry, an old friend of mine, down to see who was departing for the greatest boom town of this generation, informed me that if I had made no reservation for quarters in Goldfield, I would be unable to obtain any, even chairs in the hotel lobbies were renting for $4 per night, and volun-teered the use of his room there for my convenience until his return. He described the house and location, which I identified without difficulty, but found no one to direct me to the room. A glance into the immediate future of the refining industry, and a retrospective view of 1929, cannot fail to emphasize the need for effective measures of control of refinery still runs. With oil producers alert to the need for control of the crude supply, it has become more than ever necessary for refiners to complete the movement toward stabilization by concerted determination to maintain still run schedules within the limitations prescribed by the demand for gasoline. The outlook for continued growth in the demand for gasoline appears to be well sustained by a preliminary survey of requirements for 1930. In fact, it is apparent that the industry will be assured of a market for gasoline that will aggregate in volume at least 472,000,000 bbl. this year. This indicates a gain in total demand over 1929 of about 9 per cent. or about 4.6 per cent, less than the gain recorded during 1929 over 1928, which amounted to 13.6 per cent. Despite the indicated increase in gasoline demand this year, it is apparent that little, if any, more crude will be required than last year. This is shown in Table 1, presenting estimates of gasoline demand and probable crude requirements for 1930. In recent years a considerable tonnage of the 18 per cent chromium and 8 per cent nickel steels has been used in lightweight high-strength structures that must be resistant to deterioration under atmospheric conditions. These steels are austenitic in character and their strength can best be increased by cold-working. Although a marked increase in tensile strength is obtained, claims have been made that the cold-worked steels do not possess fully satisfactory elastic propertics. Under certain conditions, however, this has caused no great concern, because, as explained by Ragsdale,1,2 he cold-rolled steels have been widely applied for construction of lightweight, high-strength trains using spot welding for joining purposes. Ffield3 agrees that the ease with which thin sections of the cold-rolled 18-8 steels can be joined by spot welding is greatly in their favor, but that they would be more satisfactory if higher elastic properties and a higher modulus of elasticity could be obtained. He states that, as far as the mechanical properties are concerned, the straight chromium stainless steel is superior to the cold-worked 18-8 steel, and in order to illustrate, he prcsented the data of Fig. 1, which also give a stress-strain curve for a low-carbon 13 per cent Cr steel. Ffield† proposed that columbium-bearing or titanium-bearing cold-rolled 18-8 steels be given a heat-treatment (preferably for 1 hr.) in the range 400" to 600°C. to precipitate carbides in order to obtain better mechanical properties. Discussions by Sutton,4,5 de Ganahl,6,7,8 Krivobok and Lincoln,&apos; Knerr,l0 and Thaden11 have given further information on the properties of the cold-rolled 18-8 steels compared with other materials used in lightweight, high-strength structures. These investigators and others point out that the ultimate tensile strength of the cold-rolled 18-8 steel can be increased to 200,000 lb. per sq. in. or higher; Krivobok et al. indicate that

PAULY, Schenectady, N. Y.-I have seen this installation and I wish all those interested in the question of electricity as a mine pumping agent could see it. It is not only a model for mine installation, but might well serve as a model for any electrically driven pumping plant. I think I am correct in saying that the pumps are the largest electrically operated centrifugal pumps in mine service in America. I talked with Mr. Rumsey in Duluth just before coming here, and he told me that the actual tests of the equipment as installed checked very closely with the shop tests; that the water delivered by the pumps was slightly in excess of the guarantee, something like 3 or 4 per cent., and that no troubles except of a very minor nature had been experienced with the installation from the start. One point which has been brought out by Mr. Rumsey, and by others who have looked into this question, is the marked saving which&apos; can be made by the application of electricity to pumps, especially to the main sump pumps. The pumps are always located a long distance from the boiler plant and the losses in the steam mains are large. While many of the steam pumps are of a very high grade, yet the tests seemed to indicate that the steam consumption is extremely large. The reduction in operating cost of one small installation which I. have in mind pumping against a head of approximately 2,000 ft.-which by the way was a reciprocating pump-reduced the pumping cost to the neighborhood of one-fifth of the previous steam cost. . The high steam cost was probably due to leakage in the engine and the loss in transmission in the mine, the pumps being located almost half a, mile from the boiler plant.

MANY processes for cleaning coal that are in use depend primarily on physical properties of coal and refuse other than specific gravity and surface conditions relating to froth flotation. These properties are shape, coefficient of sliding friction, resilience, friability, magnetic susceptibility, and electrical conductivity. In many of these processes specific gravity does have some effect and many separators are designed to utilize more than one of the physical properties cited. Although the processes described herein do not have a widespread application, yet for specific coals and specific conditions, they are economically important. A problem confronting many coal-mining districts is the marketing of the slacks or screenings and dust passing the final sizing screens. Processes in commercial use installed primarily to increase the form value, and hence the market value, of these slacks and dusts include briquetting, packaging, and low-temperature carbonization. MECHANICAL PICKERS Machines utilizing shape, frictional resistance, and differences in resilience of coal and impurities are usually called mechanical pickers. They require a closely sized feed, therefore their use is confined to the pea, nut, and egg sizes. Various types of these devices are described by Berrisford, 1, 2 Taggart,3 and Peele.4 Shape In general, coal differs in shape from its accompanying dirt throughout the range of commercial sizes. Coal, breaking into roughly cubical particles, contains a greater number of axes that are approximately the same length than does the dirt. The latter, consisting of pieces of slate and shale and lenses of pyrite, is flatter in nature. Further, flat coal often has a dirty, slaty appearance, even though of high quality. Mechanical pickers known as flat pickers, or "flatters," are widely used in the Pennsylvania anthracite region to remove flat coal .from the final clean coal. This practice greatly improves the appearance of the final market product.
