The serious objections to the Leblanc soda process may be enumerated as follows: 1st. The total loss of sulphur employed, equal to about one-third of soda produced. Various processes have been proposed to regain this sulphur, but none have come into practical operation on a large scale. 2d. The great balk of waste products, equal to nearly twice the amount of soda, which forms a serious annoyance about the works. 3d. The complicated series of operations necessary. 4th. The large amount of labor and fuel required. 5th. The prodoction of noxious gases which necessitate extensive condensing arrangements. 6th. The large capital necessary for the . erection and maintenance of the plant, These objections have long been recognized, and many attempts have been made during the last thirty or forty years, to discover and introduce a cheaper and more direct method for the manufacture of this important staple. The reaction between bicarbonate of ammonia and common salt, whereby bicarbonate of soda, insoluble in a solution of chloride of ammonium, is precipitated, has been closely studied for the last twentyfour years, on account of its simplicity and the purity of the product it affords. This ammonia-soda process is now so far developed, that while it is not in position to entirely replace the Leblanc process, yet it can successfully compete with it where the conditions and localities are favorable. The advantages of the ammonia-soda process may be summed up as follows : 1st. It is independent of the essential agent in the Leblanc process, via., sulphuric acid, and hence can be established in those localities where salt is abundant, and yet where sulphuric acid could not be made, or where it could not be transported profitably. 2d. The ammonia-soda process being a " wet" process, the evaporation of salt brines to obtain the solid salt required in the Leblanc process, is rendered unnecessary. 3d. The direct conversion of chloride of sodium into bicarbonate of soda, which can readily be converted into the maketable monocar-

Ther?nal, X-ray, metallographic, and vapor pressure data were obtained to establish the phase diagram and standard free energy, enthalpy, and entropy of formation for the compounds in the Sw-Zn system. Four compounds, SmZn, SmZn2 , SmZn4.s, and SmZn8.5, melt congruently at 960°, 94Z°, 908°, and 940°C, respectively. The cornpounds SlnZns, Sm3Znll, and SnzZn7.3 undergo peritectic decomposition at 855", 870°, and 890C, respectively. Another compound of uncertain stoichiometry, SmZn11, undergoes peritectic decomposition at 760°C. Four entectics were observed with the following compositions in weight percent zinc and eutectic tenzperatures in degrees Centigrade: 12 pct, 680°C; 36 pct, 890°C; 58 pct, 850°C; and 72 pct, 900°C. An allotropic transformation and a composition range were observed for the SmZnz compound. The transfor)nation varies from 905" to 865°C as the zinc content increases from 16.0 to 48.5 wt pct, respectively. The free energy of formation of the compounds at 50PC varies between -15.9 kcal per mole for SmZn to -51.1 kcal per mole for SmZn,.,. Corresponding enthalpies vary between -19.2 to -78.3 kcal per mole. The ther-modynamic properties for the liquid alloys are described by the relations: A search of the literature revealed very little information on the Sm-Zn system. Chao et al.&apos; as well as Iandelli and palenzonai have reported the structure of SmZn to be cubic B2 type and Kuz&apos;ma et al3. have reported the structure of -sm2zn17 to be of the Th2Ni17 type. The purpose of this work was to establish the phase diagram of this system, to determine the zinc vapor pressure over the solid two-phase regions of the SYstem, and to calculate the thermodynamic properties of the compounds. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The metals used in this investigation were Bunker Hill slab zinc 99.99 wt pct pure and Ames Laboratory samarium. Analysis of the samarium by chemical, spectrographic, and vacuum-fusion methods gave the following average impurities in ppm: Nd, <200; Eu, <100; Gd, <100; Y, <50;Ca, 225; Ta, 400; Mg, 10; Cu, ~50; 0, 175; H, 20; and N, 15. The elements Fe, Si, Cr, Ni, Al, and W were not detected. The samarium was received as sponge metal and was kept under argon except when being cut with shears and when being weighed. Tantalum was found to be a suitable container for alloys with zinc contents up to the Sm2Znl, stoichio-metry. At higher zinc contents the grain boundaries of the tantalum containers were penetrated by the alloy and the containers failed during prolonged annealing. About 25 g of massive zinc and samarium sponge were sealed in tantalum crucibles equipped with thermocouple wells. These crucibles were in turn sealed in stainless-steel jackets. All closures were made by arc welding under an argon atmosphere. The samples were equilibrated in an oscillating furnace and in some cases were given various heat treatments in a soaking furnace. After appropriate heat treatment the steel jackets were removed and the alloy subjected to differential thermal analysis. The apparatus was calibrated against pure zinc and pure copper and found to reproduce the accepted melting points within 1°C. Alloys were subsequently subjected to metallographic examination and those of appropriate compositions were used for X-ray diffraction analysis and for zinc vapor pressure determinations. The vapor pressures were determined by the dewpoint method. Both the differential analysis and dewpoint measuring apparatuses have been described in earlier papers.4, 5 All alloy samples were etched with Nital (0.5 to 3 pct nitric acid in alcohol) except the samarium-rich alloys. These more reactive alloys were electro-polished in a 1 to 6 pct HClO4 in methanol solution at -700c at a potential of 50 v. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Phase Diagram. The results of thermal analysis are indicated by the points on the phase diagram, Fig. 1. Eight compounds and four eutectics were observed. The composition of the compounds and their melting or peritectic temperatures are given on the phase diagram. The four eutectic compositions in wt pct zinc and eutectic temperatures in % are: 12 pct,- 680°C; 36 pct, 890°C; 58 pct, 850°C; and 72 pct, 900°C. The stoichiometry of the most zinc-rich compound is still uncertain, but is very likely either SmZnll or SmZnlz. However, to simplify the presentation which follows it will be referred to as SmZnll. As shown on the phase diagram the phase regions for some of the samarium-rich alloys have not been unambiguously established. Our North American railway system, including the lines serving the United States, Canada and Mexico, with a total operating mileage of 303,040, employing 71,818 locomotives, represents not only the greatest industrial user of fuel coal, but in the variety of coals used, ranging from anthracite down through the several gradations of bitumirlous coals, as well as lignites, covers about all there is in American-mined coals. Necessarily the wide range of fuel coal embraces not only extremes of calorific value but also every possible gradation shown in size and preparation, from run of mine to washed nut and slack. Approximately 8 per cent. of the fuel used by the railroads is consumed in shop power plants, shop buildings, pumping stations, station buildings, etc. The principal class of coal (as designated) used by the railroads is bituminous, such, however, including a substantial tonnage of subbituminous and lignite coal; all United States railroads using in 1923 for locomotive, shop, station buildings and miscellaneous uses, a total of 4,578,000 tons of anthracite, 155,795,000 tons of bituminous, subbituminous and lignite coal and 58,005,000 bbl. (42 gal.) of fuel oil. The Class 1 railroads of the United States (those whose gross annual earnings equal or exceed $1,000,000) used in 1926: Bituminous, subbituminous and lignite coal, net tons..... 140,083,885 Anthracite, net tons................................ 3,667,505 Fuel oil, gal........................................ 3,058,915,511 Railroad fuel-purchasing agents rarely attempt to classify coal for locomotive use on the basis of chemical analysis; although this is very generally used as a guide in the initial selection of a fuel supply. The extraordinarily high rate of combustion developed in the modern locomotive, generating as high as 2500 b.hp., with limited facilities for cleaning fires en route, suggests the importance of a fuel supply containing a reasonably low percentage of ash-making material, and while the percentage of locomotive coal handled through automatic stokers is growing, the principal tonnage is yet fired by hand.

Machine loading of coal into mine cars is increasing rapidly. Particular reasons for its use frequently apply to certain localities, but in general, it is profitable to install mechanical coal-loading equipment: (I) when existing hand-loading contract rates prevent further cost reduction; (2) when the height of the coal bed requires that either top or bottom must be taken to place cars in rooms; (3) when labor shortage or limited house-plant capacity prevents the production of desired tonnage ; (4) when tonnage requirements are in excess of possible hand-loaded production from developed areas; (5) when working places are scattered and it is possible to concentrate production, and therefore supervision, by the installation of mechanical equipment; (6) when rapid development is essential. Having decided to install loading equipment, the problem then arises as to what type is best adapted for a particular mine or coal bed, the choice lying between mobile track equipment, pit-car loaders, scrapers, shaker conveyors, belt conveyors and drag conveyors. MajoR FactoRs Influencing Choice of Equipment In determining the type of equipment to be used, the following major factors must be studied: Grades.—Adverse grades, while permitting other types of loading equipment to work successfully, may prevent the success of a shaker conveyor installation. Thickness of Bed.—The thickness of coal governs the choice of equipment. A machine that requires 5 ft. of head room should not be selected for a 3-ft. bed where otherwise it would be unnecessary either to brush top or to lift bottom. Nature of Pavement.—Soft or scaly bottoms are unsuitable for the use of any type of digging loader, shaker conveyors or scraper loaders. nigging loaders and scraper loaders scale the bottom, mixing it with the coal and causing preparation difficulties; shaker-conveyor drives frequently work themselves loose, destroying the conveyor alignment and creating maintenance problems. THE derivation of the word tire (or tyre, as it is spelled in England) is obscure. Some dictionaries suggest that it is the aphetic form for "attire, covering," so called as being the outside covering or band of a wheel; also as a corruption of "tier," the band which holds, or "ties," the rest of the wheel together. One dictionary states: "The supposed derivation of the word is that bands were first used on wheels in the City of Tyre, Syria. " In the infancy of railroads, the tracks consisted of flat baits of iron, spiked or bolted to the upper surfaces of longitudinal timbers, which; in turn, rested upon masonry foundations. Stone blocks installed for this purpose on the old Germantown & Norristown Railroad, now the Chestnut Hill branch of the Philadelphia & Reading Railway, were to be seen for many years on the right-of-way, north of what is now. Wayne Junc-tion, Philadelphia, Pa. The "cornerstone" of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad was laid Apr. 4, 1828, and the first locomotive in America was built by Peter Cooper at the St. Clair Works, Baltimore, Md., in 1829 "to demonstrate its adaptability to a curved road." It is believed that the first successful locomotive was built in Philadelphia by Tyler & Baldwin in 1832 for the Germantown & Norristown Railroad. Rufus Tyler-and Matthias Baldwin were brothers-in-law; the latter&apos;s name will he identified with American locomotives until locomotives are forgotten. The Wheels on these first locomotives, designed to run on this primitive rail, were shod with plain iron bands, bent and welded. The flanges consisted. of separate iron bands, bent sidewise, welded, and, bolted to the sides of the wooden follies, or rings. Before many years had elapsed the tires were fabricated of iron bands, rolled in one, piece with the flange projection on the side. The tire for each wheel was bent and welded and subsequently attached to the wheel center by shrinkage, bolts, rivets and various mechanical devices.

The occurrence of the tellurides of gold and silver, even in small quantities, is so rare that their metallurgical treatment has engaged little attention. A residence of several months at one of the few mines in North America the product of which consists entirely of such ore, has led me to arrange a method for its economical treatment. The mine referred to is the Huronian, situated a few miles distant from Jackfish Lake, in Ontario, Canada. The plan proposed is for this peculiar case, and is put on record as possibly suggestive and helpful .in any similar instance, should it occur. Since freight-rates from the mine to the nearest railroad-point were extremely high, and for other economical reasons, the method proposed is modified by the use, as far as possible, of the machinery already at the mine, and is so arranged that bullion instead of concentrates would be obtained as a final product. The ore-vein at the Huronian mine varied in width from about 4 feet at the surface to 2 feet and less at the lowest level—125 feet —and dipped southeast about 88. The rock consisted, on both foot- and hanging-walls, of soft, green Huronian slates carrying much highly crystalline but barren pyrite. The ore carried an inconsiderable amount of galena with iron and copper pyrites, argentite, hessite, sylvanite (or petzite), and probably altaite, the telluride of lead. Near the surface the ore showed considerable native gold, but this disappeared with greater depth. Two complete analyses of minerals containing tellurium are here attached, as they establish the presence of two important compounds: I. SEVERAL constructive and fundamental studies have been made in the analysis of data obtained from experiments carried on with batch ball and rod mills. The operating characteristics of ball milling in small continuous circuits have also been appraised. It is from these analyses that some of the theories of comminution have been developed. Relatively few studies of continuous rod milling have added significantly to the fundamental concepts, because seldom have they yielded sufficiently consistent results. Perhaps they have been too limited in their scope. Careful control of the variables in batch grinding is simple compared with that encountered in a continuous operation. This factor alone has discouraged many investigators. Occasionally results of systematic changes made in industrial rod mill circuits have been published, but usually the data are sketchy and are restricted because of the unwieldiness of the equipment used. The work, in general, has not been comprehensive; nevertheless it has provided empirical relationships that have bridged the gap between postulate and practice so that by proper manipulation of formulae, a mill designer can anticipate mill size and power requirements.14 Although operating variables of a small continuous mill are not so easy to control as with the batch mill, with present day devices, and with careful experimental work, consistent results can be obtained. Nearly four years ago, in the Process Laboratory, Allis-Chalmers Mfg. Co. began a systematic study of the effects of several variables upon the performance of the pilot rod mill. A mill was built in the laboratory to provide the versatility required for the proposed study. It was constructed in sections so that it could be operated, with a few modifications, as a rod mill 30 in. x 8 ft or 30 in. x 4 ft. The discharge end of the shell was flanged so that either an end peripheral discharge or an overflow discharge could be installed. Thus the performance of at least four types of mills could be studied merely by changing the type of discharge or the length of the mill shell. The grinding experiments were designed so that a study could be made of the way in which the mill speed, feed rate, and pulp density influenced the performance of both overflow and end peripheral discharge rod mills. Four sets of experimental data were collected from the four mill arrangements. The mill in each set of experiments was fed at four rates of feed depending on the length of the mill, at four pulp densities, and at five percentages of critical speed. Electrical and mechanical controls were in- stalled to regulate all these independent variables, and auxiliary devices were used to verify the precision of the controls at each point. The dependent variables used to quantify the experiments were the reduction ratio and the hew surface area produced as calculated from sieve analyses. These were incorporated with the energy factor by the calculation of both the new surface produced per unit of energy and the Bond work index.&apos; Rod wear, as a dependent variable, was not studied because of the short period of operation for each run. Exclusive of repeat runs, each set of experiments yielded 80 products, and the total study at least 320 products, all of which were quantified. With the operating information collected, these data presented a bewildering accumulation. Statistical analysis has been invaluable in unraveling the confusion and in presenting a means of establishing the nature and the magnitude of the significant variables. Data presented in this paper are those from the 30 in. x 4 ft end peripheral discharge rod mill, Fig. 1, when limestone was ground at feed rates of 1000, 2000, 4000, and 5000 lb per hr, at pulp densities of 50, 60, 70, and 80 pct solids, and at mill speeds of 50, 60, 70, 80, and 90 pct of the critical speed. These 80 tests have all been run at least twice, and occasionally a third time, to prove that the data obtained were reproducible. The techniques of operation and the methods of quantification of results are described in the following pages and the results analyzed statistically to show the significant variables. The variables are plotted to show the relationships that exist. A massive dolomitic limestone from Waukesha Lime and Stone Co. was used for feed during these experiments because of its availability and its tex-tural uniformity. This limestone analyzed 28.7 pct CaO, 21.0 pct MgO, 6.0 pct SiO2, 0.4 pct A1²O³, and 0.3 pct Fe²O³ and had a loss on ignition of 44.1 pct. MEASUREMENTS of the solubility of scandium in liquid cadmium from 349" to 606°C by Chasanov, Hunt, Johnson, and eder&apos; led to the isolation and characterization of the intermetallic compound ScCQ. The solid phase found in equilibrium with a saturated solution of scandium in liquid cadmium above 422°C is ScCQ. The equilibrium solid phase below this temperature has not as yet been characterized. Hexagonal needles of ScCG were isolated from a 5 wt pct Sc alloy which had been ice-quenched from 500°C. Free cadmium was leached away from the intermetallic with saturated ammonium nitrate solution. The concentration of cadmium in successive leaches was followed polarographically and the leaching process was terminated when the rate of cadmium dissolution decreased markedly. Chemical analysis of the intermetallic thus isolated is as follows: 11.5 wt pct Sc and 88.3 wt pct Cd. The composition of ScCQ is 11.8 wt pct Sc and 88.2 wt pct Cd. X-ray diffraction powder photographs of ScCds taken in a 114.6-mm Debye-Scherrer camera with CuKa, radiation can be indexed on the basis of a hexagonal nit cell. Lattice coonstants are a. = 6.330 ± 0.001A to 6.324 i 0.001A and co = 4.853 i 0.001A. The a0 has a slight range with the lower value seemingly associated with the cadmium-rich terminus of the phase. With eight atoms in the unit cell the calculated intermetallic density is 7.54 g per cu cm; the density as determined by a liquid-displacement method is 7.7 g per cu cm. Powder-diffraction data for ScCQ are recorded in Table I. Stoichiometry, symmetry, unit-cell dimensions, and the number of atoms per unit cell indicate the MgsCd (D019) type structure for ScCQ; space group is D,&-P6,/mmc. Atomic coordinates are:

Studies of the forces and conditions governing the recovery of petroleum from natural reservoirs indicate that a low gas-oil ratio increases ultimate recovery, retards the encroachment of water and tends to reduce lifting costs. Methods for controlling and reducing gas-oil ratios in producing wells consequently have been given considerable attention during the past few years. However, during this same period, the production from wells in nearly all fields has been fixed by proration agreements and it is the opinion of the writer that where a well is required to produce steadily at a predetermined rate, less than its "potential" or maximum capacity, the gas-oil ratio will depend only upon the rate of production, and will be independent of the method of production and of the design of equipment in the well. If no change in the rate of production is contemplated, efforts directed to improving the gas-oil ratio by altering the diameter of the flow string, changing the position of the choke, assisting the flow with gas-lift or pump, etc., will be unsuccessful. This viewpoint is not new. It was presented by H. N. Marsh and B. H. Robinson in 1929,&apos; but it has not been generally accepted. Although engineers believe that the rate of withdrawal and not the equip ment used governs the water-oil ratio, a similar opinion regarding the gas-oil ratio is not so commonly admitted. The rates of flow of oil and gas into the base of an oil well depend upon the following conditions: 1. The characterist-ics of the oil and gas. 2. The characteristics of the underground reservoir. 3. Temperature and pressure conditions in the reservoir. 4. The back-pressure held against the face of the sand. In operating a well, the only one of these conditions over which control may be exercised through operating procedure and the use of equipment above the sand is the back-pressure at the face of the sand. INTRODUCTION Ventilation practice at Isa Mine has been evolving since underground mining began in 1931. Much fundamental work has been conducted and reported regarding the primary ventilation system [Mathews K.E. et a1 (1967) and Brown J.R., Fisher T.H., Gibson K.L. (1979) 1. However, ventilation networks for subsystems such as open stopes, have evolved with experience. This paper outlines current ventilation practice for open stoping. Mount Isa Mine The mine is located in semi-arid North-West Queensland, Australia, and currently produces 20 000 tonnes of copper ore and 10 000 tonnes of silver-lead-zinc ore daily in each five day working week. Mining extends over a north-south strike length of 3.5 km with a maximum width across dip approaching 1 km, and is to a depth of 960 m (Figure 1). At present approximately 90% of the mine&apos;s copper production is from the 1100 Orebody, which contains ore reserves of 121 million tonnes of 3.2% copper. Open stoping is currently the mining method employed, and is used for primary stoping and pillar recovery adjacent to cement fill walls. The development of stoping methods in the 1100 Orebody has been documented by Kirkby R.W., Blair J.R., and Hutton R.C. (19781, Hornsby B. and Sullivan B.J. (1978), and Alexander E.G. and Fabjanczyk M.W (1981). As many as thirteen open stopes may be producing concurrently in the Orebody (Figure 2). The multiple silver-lead-zinc orebodies containing reserves of 54 million tonnes of 150 g/t silver, 6.4% lead and 6.5% zinc, are mined by open stoping, and cut and fill techniques. These methods have been documented by Goddard I.A. and Bridges M.C. (1977 1, and Goddard I. A. (1981 1. Only the ventilation of the 1100 Orebody open stopes will be discussed. However, the same ventilation philosophy is employed in open stope design in the lead orebodies.

IN the normal operation of the iron blast furnace, reduction of the iron oxides is accomplished almost entirely above the tuyeres.&apos; Blast furnace slags usually contain less than 0.5 pct FeO, although higher values may occur with abnormal operation. There is reason to conjecture, however, that incompletely reduced ore may sometimes reach the hearth and enter the slag as a result of heavy slips or, perhaps, even from cores of excessively large lumps of a charge material of poor reducibility. The possibility of reoxidation of iron droplets falling in front of the tuyeres has been considered by several writers. It would be of interest, to know how rapidly iron oxides reaching the slag for any of these reasons could be reduced by reaction with coke or with the high carbon liquid iron in the hearth. In comparison with the hundreds of papers that have appeared on various aspects of the reduction of solid iron oxides by gases and in the presence of several forms of carbon, little work has been published on the reductioin of liquid oxides or slags. Dancey measured rates of reaction of the pure liquid oxides, both FeO and Fe,O,, with molten iron containing about 4.3 pct C. The oxide was dropped into the cup formed in the upper surface of the iron by rotating the crucible and melt. Under these conditions, reduction of either FeO or Fe,O., was completed in less than 10 sec. The present study was concerned with the reduction of FeO from blast furnace-type slags containing less than 5 pct FeO and melted over carbon-saturated iron in stationary graphite crucibles. The results were considerably different from those found by Dancey, as will be discussed later. Although this work is of interest in relation to hearth reactions in the blast furnace, interpretations must be made with caution because the experimental conditions do not duplicate those within a furnace and may not even lead to the same reaction mechanism. The authors were motivated in undertaking this work by an additional interest—the part played by FeO reduction in the mechanism of de-sulphurization of iron by slags under similar experimental conditions. Derge, Philbrook, and Goldman eveloped detailed experimental evidence to support a three-step mechanism for desulphurization like that originally proposed by Holbrook and Joseph&apos; (These reactions are written in molecular form for convenience, but this is not intended to imply the existence of molecules of FeS in the bulk metal phase nor to deny the likelihood of ionic reactions in the slag.) Earlier work by Chang and Goldman" had shown that the overall reaction follows first-order kinetics with respect to sulphur and that the rate of reaction is proportional to the slag-metal interface area, which observations have been confirmed by subsequent work. Later studiese,&apos; have established the influence of al.loying elements on the first and last steps of the reaction. This paper reports a study of step 3 alone, uncomplicated by the simultaneous process of sulphur transfer. Apparatus and Procedure The experiments were made in a conventional high frequency induction furnace powered by a 35 kva Hg spark gap converter. The graphite crucibles used for most of the runs were 14 cm (5.5 in.) deep and 4.8 cm (1.9 in.) ID with 0.75 cm (0.3 in.) wall. An insulating cover with a small opening for withdrawing samples was used to minimize heat loss and infiltration of air into the furnace. The crucible was charged with 300 g of carbon-saturated iron and either 65 or 100 g of prefused slag analyzing 38.0 pct SiO,, 15.4 pct A10 and 47.1 pct CaO. To obtain the cleanest possible interface at the start of the reaction, the metal and slag were brought to temperature together to prevent the rejection of kish graphite that would have been caused by the chilling effect of a large addition of cold slag to carbon-saturated iron. After temperature control had been established, the desired amount of iron oxide was added in the form of a prefused slag of composition 73.6 pct FeO, 7.7 pct AWX and 19.0 pct SiOl. This slag addition was observed to be molten in somewhat less than 1 min, and a very vigorous reaction proceeded for 1 to 2 min after its introduction. Zero time was taken as 2 min after the ferrous silicate slag addition. Slag samples weighing about 0.5 g each were taken periodically by a copper chill sampler." The weight of the initial slag was large relative to the weight of samples removed, so that the slag weight never varied by more than 5 pct during any run. Temperature was measured by a calibrated W/Mo thermocouple immersed in the metal, with a graphite tip cemented over the fused silica protection tube to prevent attack by slag and metal. After some difficulties with uncertain temperatures during the first two runs, the practice adopted to position the thermocouple for reproducible results was to lower the protection tube to touch the bottom of the crucible and then raise it 0.5 cm. The apparent temperature gradient between the bottom of the crucible and the top of the slag was found to be 15°C (27°F). but much of this spread was probably the result of inadequate immersion of the protection tube to off-set conduction losses along the graphite tip when the thermocouple was inserted only into the slag. The temperature of the bath was controlled within 25°C (9°F) during a run.

The activity of aluminum in solid Co-A1 alloys has been measured by an isopiestic technique between 850° and 1200°C from 45 to 80 at. pct Al. The activity shows a Precipitous decrease around the stoichzornetric composition of CoAl. Free energies of mixing have been calculated over a limited composition range. Considering an antistructure-vacancy defect mechanism, the degree of intrinsic disorder, a , in CoAl was related to the alunminum activity. Excellent agreement between the calculated and experimental activity curves was obtained for a = 1.25 x 10-4. ThERMODYNAMIC properties of solid aluminum-transition metal alloy are being studied in an investigation of disordering in ordered compounds. In a continuing series of investigations, activities of solid Fe-1,&apos; Ni-A1, kd r-A13 alloys have been measured. From the results for Fe-A1 and Ni-A1, the degree of intrinsic disorder for the equiatomic compounds was calculated2 using equations derived by Wagner and chottk. From the results for Cr-A1 the degree of intrinsic disorder was calculated from equations derived by Orr.&apos; In this paper, the results of the study of Co-A1 alloys are described. Published activity data in the Co-A1 system has been limited to liquid alloys at 1600°C.° A heat capacity study7 of stoichiometric CoAl indicated that a second-order phase transformation occurs at 790° C, attributed to an order-disorder reaction. Oelsen and Middel,&apos; employing the calorimetric mixing of pure liquid metals, obtained heats of formation for compositions from 6 to 90 at. pct Co. Heats of formation for 50 and 78 at. pct Co alloys have also been measured by acid solution calrimetr. The Co-A1 phase diagram, as compiled by Hansen and Anderko,lo is in good agreement with more recent X-ray evidence. The method for measuring activities of aluminum in this study is essentially that employed in the studies of the Fe-1,&apos; i-Al, and r-A13 systems. This isopiestic method entails placing cobalt specimens, in a temperature gradient, in a sealed alumina system containing a pure liquid aluminum source of fixed vapor pressure. The specimens are equilibrated, cooled to room temperature, and their final compositions determined. From the measured temperature of the specimens and the known vapor pressure of pure aluminum the activities of aluminum in the alloy can be calculated. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The cobalt was 3-mil-thick sheet of 99.9 pct purity (herritt Gordon Mines Ltd., anada). The major impurities were 0.1 pct Ni, 0.014 pct C, 0.018 pct Fe, 0.004 pct S, and 0.005 pct Cu. The aluminum metal had a purity of 99.99 pct (Aluminum Corp. of America) and all alumina parts were 99.7 pct A1,O3 (Triangle RR Grade, Morganite Refractories, Inc.) with major impurities 0.05 pct SiOz, 0.1 pct Fe203, 0.2 pct NazO, and 0.05 pCt K20. Runs 1 to 3 were made with annular cobalt specimens (12 mm ID by 21 mm OD) punched from the sheet. The specimens were deburred and degreased in carbon tetrachloride and in acetone. The samples, each weighing about 150 mg, were then positioned along an alumina rod, a in. OD by 14 in. long, separated by alumina spacers, i in. ID by | in. OD by & in. long. The lower end of the rod was placed in a hole drilled in the center of an 80-g aluminum cylinder. This assembly was put into an alumina crucible, 1+ in. ID by 13 in. OD by 3+ in. high, and the position of each sample was measured to within 50.5 mm relative to the bottom of the crucible. An alumina tube, 28.5 mm ID by 35.5 mm OD by 14 in. long, closed at the top, was slipped over the whole assembly, so that it fitted snugly into the bottom crucible. The entire reaction assembly was tied with molybdenum wire and lowered into a mullite tube, closed at the bottom. A quartz thermocouple tube, closed at one end, containing a t/Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple, calibrated according to the specifications of the National Bureau of standards,&apos;&apos; was placed along the reaction assembly inside the mullite tube. The temperature of each specimen could be determined by gradually raising the thermocouple and measuring the temperature gradient along the reaction assembly. The combined error in temperature measurement and sample position resulted in a total error of Q°C in the recorded temperature of each sample. The mullite tube was sealed at the top by a water-cooled brass head, connected to a conventional glass vacuum system. The aluminum reservoir is heated to its melting point sealing the alumina system containing the samples. During this process the pressure is maintained below 0.01 li Hg. During subsequent heating to establish the proper temperature gradient and throughout the entire run the pressure is maintained below 2 1 Hg by means of a two-stage mechanical pump. Equilibration runs lasted from 4 to 6 weeks and were terminated by air cooling. The temperature of the liquid aluminum reservoir was brought below its melting point in less than 20 min. For runs 4 and 5, alloy buttons with 49 and 69 at. pct A1 were prepared from the initial high-purity metals by arc melting under purified argon. The alloy buttons were comminuted to powder with an alumina mortar and pestle until the powder passed through a 400-mesh screen, particle size 0.0014 in. But it is not the case as the author states: "In samples consisting of single grains of mineral, those grains must, as already mentioned, be either of dolomite or magnesite. Since 78.6 pct of the deposit consists of magnesite and 21.4 pct of dolomite (excluding for present purpose the presence of other minerals), for any single grains picked at random the probability will be 0.214 that is it dolomite and0.786 that is it magnesite. In 1000 such samples the expected numbers of dolomite and mapesite grains will be 214 and 786 respectively." 0.214 and 0.786 would be proportions by weigbt under the necessary condition that all grains of dole mite and magnesite should have an identical weight. Obviously it is not the case, as the specific gravities are not the same for mapesite and dolomite and the volumes of the grains are different. Furthermore, because of these differences the conditions for a random sampling are not fulfilled and we are not authorized to state that the probabilities are, respectively, 0.214 and 0.786. The author however makes a simple application of Eq. 1: M = 1/n— ? fi x i . n Should we deduce that this relation is wrohg? Not at all, but when applying Eq. 1 you must not overlook what it actually. means. Eq. 1 gives a definition of the arithmetic mean of a total of n observed values Xi and nothing else. But the average conteht of a deposit has not the same significance. It is the ratio between the weight of concerned mineral in the deposit and the total weight of the deposit. As from 1000 particles the 214 of dolomite and the 786 of magnesite have not the same weight, the two definitions do not concur, and when applying Eq. 1 the result is an arithmetic mean of figures which has no connection with what is named average contentof a deposit. The situation is similar to the calculation of an average velocity. If a car travels a first mile over at 30 miles per hr and a second mile over at 60 miles per hr, when applying formula 1 you find as average velocity for the 2 miles: 30+60 ------- - 45 miles per hour. Many people calculate in this way and they do not realize that a mistake is involved. In fact the definition of he average velocity for the 2 miles is the quotient of the distance of 2 miles by the time (in hours) necessary for 2 miles travel, i.e.: 2 ---------- = 40 miles per hr. 1 + 1 30 60 In other words, the average volocity wanted is not the arithmetic but the harmonic average of the two velocities. The above mentioned bias in the calculation of the average contents of deposits is frequent, even in the assessments made by experienced engineers and is independant of what is named the sampling error. In order to supress the bias and to be able to use Eq. 1, you must apply a correction. An example on the subject can be found in an article by Duval et al. in the January 1955 issue of the &apos;&apos;Annales des Mines" (French), page 19. R. F. Schurtz (Author&apos;s Reply) Mr. Duval&apos;s position is quite correct. The proportions shown for dolomite and magnesite., respectively, of 0.214 and 0.786 are, in fact, proportions by weight uncorrected for specific gravity. In our day to day operation of producing magnesite from these mines at a very substantial rate, we do not normally make corrections for the difference between the specific gravity of dolomite and that of magnesite. If these corrections are made in Eq. 3 as shown in my article, then the numbers of grains turn out to be in proportions of 0.226 dolomite and 0.774 mapesite instead of the values actually shown in the equation. For the purposes of our work, and in view of the inherently low accuracy of the data, this correction was not deemed worthwhile making.

A simple method is described for determining the orientation of a single crystal by means of a cylindr cal X-ray camera. Orientation setting to within ±1 deg is attainable by a stereographic analysis of a single cylindrical Laue pattern produced by the originally randomly mounted crystal. Final precision adjustments which permit orientation of the crystal to within ±5 min of arc from the desired position can be made by the method of Weisz and Cole. A chart, originally Presented by Schiebold and schneider7 and which allows a direct reading of the two stereographic polar coordinates of the corresponding pole of a given Laue spot, has been recomputed to aid in the stereographic interpretation of the cylindrical Laue X-ray photograph. Detailed instructions for the use of the chart, a simple example, and a comparison with the conventional flat-film Laue Methods, are presented. 1 HE problem of determining the orientation of the unit cell of a single crystal relative to a set of fixed external reference coordinates is fundamental to most problems of X-ray crystallography and to many experimental studies of the structure-sensitive physical properties of crystalline materials. Several techniques for measuring these orientation relations have been developed which correlate optically observable, orientation-dependent physical properties to the unit cell. Examples of such procedures include the observation of cleavage faces or birefringence, as discussed by bunn,1 or the examination of preferentially formed etch-pits, as discussed by barrett.2 Each of these methods is limited, for various reasons, to an orientation accuracy of approximately ±1 deg—a serious limitation in some experimental studies. Several other limitations decrease the generality of these methods. Of these, perhaps most notable is the absence in many crystals of the physical property necessary for the orientation technique. The most widely used methods for determining crystal orientation are variations of the Laue X-ray diffraction method. Because of the indeterminacy of the X-ray wavelength diffracted to a given spot, the interpretation of Laue photographs is now limited almost exclusively to the procedure of using a chart to determine the angular coordinates of the corresponding pole for each spot. For the flat-film geometries, either a leonhardt3 or a Dunn-Martin4 chart is used in interpreting transmission patterns, whereas a greninger5 chart is used for interpreting back-reflection patterns. A less common method of interpreting flat-film transmission Laue photographs is by comparing the Laue pattern with the Majima and Togino standards,6 or with the revised standards prepared by Dunn and Martin.4 Although this last method is applicable only to crystals with cubic symmetry, it can be very rapid and just as accurate as the graphical methods. The primary limitation of all the X-ray methods mentioned is the relatively small number of Laue spots and zones which are recorded on the flat film. Often, few, if any, major poles appear, thus making interpretation tedious and sometimes uncertain. The use of a cylindrical film eliminates this problem. Schiebold and schneider7 prepared a chart by which the orientation of the specimen crystal could be determined from a cylindrical Laue photograph. However, it was only drawn in 5-deg intervals of each of the two angular variables used to identify the Laue spots, thus limiting the accuracy of orientation to about ±3 deg. An examination of this chart indicated that if it were drawn in 2-deg intervals, crystal orientations to ±1 deg would be attainable. Subsequent use of the replotted chart has confirmed this accuracy. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the redevelopment and use of this chart, and to point out its advantages and limitations. I) CAMERA GEOMETRY AND CHART CALCULATIONS The geometry of the cylindrical camera with a related reference sphere is shown in Fig. 1. The X-ray beam BB&apos; pierces the film at the back-reflection hole B, strikes the crystal at 0, and the transmitted beam leaves the camera at the transmission hole T. One of the diffracted X-rays intersects the film at a Laue spot L. The normal OP to the diffracting plane bisects the angle BOL between the incident and diffracted X-ray beams. The point P on the reference sphere can be located uniquely by the two orthogonal motions 6 and 8 on the two great circles ENWS and BPQT respectively. Because the Bragg angle 8 (= 90 - < BOP) is always less than 90 deg, P always remains in the hemisphere BENWS. Therefore, if every possible pole P is to be recorded on the same stereographic projection, it is necessary that the projection reference point be at T with the projection plane tangent to the sphere at B.* The great

This paper presents a series of equations for mechanical ball wear, relating parameters of ball size, mill speed, and mill diameter. The fundamental equation, Eq. 12, presented here is introduced to correlate these basic parameters and thus define and clarify the concept of ball wear. This equation is offered as a general rule, which may be modified to apply to individual problems of grinding. BALL wear as observed in grinding installations is the combined result of mechanical wear and corrosion. Corrosion should be a linear function of the ball surface available. Ball corrosion, however, has been studied so little that its effect, although of great importance, cannot be included in the analyses given here. In a mill running at a low speed, grinding is the result of rubbing action within the ball mass and between the ball mass and mill liners. When the speed of the mill is gradually increased toward the critical, the impacting effect of freely falling balls becomes increasingly prominent in comparison with the rubbing action. Reduction of ore takes place partly by rubbing, partly by impact. The share of the freely falling balls in the reduction of ore reaches its practical maximum at a speed somewhat less than the critical; at that speed grinding by rubbing has decreased to a low value. It may be reasonable to think that size reduction by freely falling balls should reach its theoretical maximum at the critical speed, if the fall of the balls were not hindered by the shell of the mill beyond the top point; grinding by rubbing would cease at the critical speed. As a first approximation, wear of freely falling balls may be considered to be a homogeneous, linear function of the force at which they strike pieces of rock and other balls at the toe of the ball charge. The force equals mass times acceleration. The mass of a ball is a function of d3 and its acceleration is a function of the peripheral speed of the mill. THE Societá Auonima di Miniere e di Alti Fourni, familiarly known as the " Elba Company," works the rich ore-deposits of the Island of Elba under a long-term contract with the Italian Government. The ore-deposits are scattered over the eastern and southeastern coast; but as those parts of the island are not well provided with ports, the blast-furnaces were built at Portoferraio, the principal town of the island, situated on the northern shore, and possessing a magnificent natural harbor where even vessels as large as the battleships of the Italian navy can comfortably anchor. In the selection of Portoferraio. the cost of transporting the iron-ore from the different mines to the blast-furnaces has been reduced to a minimum, and shelter has been provided for the Company&apos;s flotilla of tugs and barges, as well as for the steamers carrying coal and pig-iron. The whole plant, of which a general view is given in Fig. 1, comprises 1. A discharging-pier with unloading-cranes. The ore and coal are transported from this pier by means of an aerial cable-rail¬way to the coal- and ore-storage yards. This cable-railway is supported by an iron bridge extending from the pier to the shore and by a wooden trestle extending from the shore to the yards. , 2. Blast furnaces, two in number, with all the accessory appa¬ratus, such as blowing-engines, dry purifiers, Cowper hot-blast stoves, hoists, etc. 3. Coke-ovens, two batteries, with coal-bin, crushers and boilers. 4. Engine-house containing the blast-engines and the electric generating-station. 5. Pumping-plant. 6. Narrow-gauge railways.

The solubilily of lead in PbS as a funclion of lemperature has been investigated by means of Hall coej&apos;icient (RH) measurentents OIL samples prepared by annealing and quenching Bridgman-grourz single crystals, which contain excess lead incorporated during /heir growth from the mell. For sufficiently long annealing times and sufficiently rapid quench rules, the samples obtained consist of n-lybe PbS snturated with In the semiconducting compounds PbS, PbSe, and PbTe, the point defects associated with the presence of lead in excess of the stoichio metric composition are shallow donors. The defects associated with the presence of excess nonmetal are shallow acceptors. lead at the annealing teuiperatiire, together luilh a dispersed second phase of lead microprecipitates. Due to the retrograde solubility of lead, the measured free carrier concentration (n = l/eR77) decreases with decreasing annealing tewperature (T) from- 2.4 X 10 em-3 for 1l85OK to 1.3 X 1018 cm-3 for 623°K. The dala are well-represented by the equation n =(1.08 x 102) exp[ - (0.37 ev.)/kT] cm-3 For most undoped samples of these compounds, the carrier concentration at room temperature and below is determined primarily by the stoichiometry, since the concentration of either excess lead or excess non-metal is large compared to the concentrations of intrinsic carriers and electrically active impurities. Therefore the dependence of composition in temperature and partial pressure can be investigated by means of Hall coefficient measurements, even though the deviations from stoichiometry do not exceed 0.03 at. This paper discusses some fundamental metallurgical principles involved in production of sound cast bronze. In a previous paper the writers advanced the theory that "oxidation" in bronze castings is due to incipient shrinkage, and showed the effect of reducing melting atmospheres.&apos; In the present paper the effects of certain impurities and of actual oxidizing conditions are shown. The appendix deals with the appearance of various inclusions. For many years the prevailing opinion has been that unsoundness, dark colored fractures and other phenomena accompanying porosity and weakness in bronzes are due to oxidation. The actual troubles are caused by fissures of intercrystalline type, which are often mistaken for intercrystalline films. These weaken the metal and make it porous. Grave doubt regarding the accuracy of the oxidation theory appears when several research papers presented within the last 10 years are reviewed critically. In 1919, Comstock2 conducted metallographic researches, attempting to identify "oxides" in synthetically prepared metals. He found that oxides of tin, aluminum, zinc, etc. are different from the intercrystalline films (or cavities) to which porosity is due. Apparently he believed that these "oxide films" may be caused by volatile oxides of zinc or of phosphorus or by dissolved gases thrown out of solution during solidification of the metal. In 1923, Woyski and Boeck3 definitely questioned the accuracy of the oxidation theory and indicated the danger from reducing atmospheres. They say that "oxidation, gassing and shrinkage may produce effects very similar." In 1926, investigations by Iwasé4 showed marked change in absorp-tion coefficients for various gases in copper above and below the liquidus.

I. Historical. Barite has been mined for many years in various parts of Virginia, probably the earliest mining-operations being in Prince William county, within 600 ft. of the Fauquier county line, about 4 miles south of east from Catlett, a station on the Southern Railway. It is claimed that the mineral was mined here as early as 1845. Mining-operations in Campbell and Pittsylvania counties in the Piedmont region, and near Marion in Smyth county, in the southwest Virginia Valley region, were begun about 30 years ago. The mining and milling of barite on a commercial scale in Tazewell and Russell counties are more recent, and commenced about 15 years ago. II. Geographical and Geological Distribution. Barite occurs in many counties in the State, as shown in Fig. 1, but the industry has been confined to only a few of them. Its occurrence is noted in two of the three major divisions of the State—namely, the Piedmont region east of the Blue Ridge, and the Paleozoic area west of the Blue Ridge. In the Piedmont region the mineral has been mined in the following counties: Bedford, Campbell, Louisa, Prince William, and Pittsylvania. In the region west of the Blue Ridge, composed of Paleozoic sediments, barite has been mined in Montgomery, Russell, Smyth, and Tazewell counties. Of the counties mentioned, Bedford, Campbell, and Pittsylvania of the Piedmont region, and Russell, Smyth, and Tazewell of the Valley region, have been the principal producers. In 1906, operations were confined to five counties—Bedford, Louisa, Pittsylvania, Russell, and Tazewell—but in the first two counties named there was no production, the work being solely development.

SAND and gravel are unconsolidated granular materials resulting from the natural disintegration of rocks. The two materials nearly al- ways occur together, variably proportioned in widely available de- posits. A commercial sand comprises the fine granular material, usually less than f in. in diameter (ASTM Designation C58-28), and gravel consists of the coarse, granular material larger than sand (ASTM Designation C125-46T). Gravel falls within the range of 1/4 in. and a top size usually of 3 ½ in. Chemical definition is impossible. Sand and gravel are always of secondary origin. They were formed from various massive rocks through the action of chemical and mechanical forces; then transported, abraded, washed, sorted, and classified by streams, glaciers, waves, or winds, to be redeposited in beds as they are found. Chief disintegrating forces in the reduction of rocks into granular particles were frost, rain, the dissolving action of acid and alkaline ground waters, the mechanical action of streams and waves, and the action of glaciers. Method of formation and deposition have imparted physical properties to sands and gravels that largely determine the commercial value of the materials for particular use and influence the manner of exploitation. In the early days of the commercial industry, purchasing specifications were relatively lenient but in. the past decade much more rigid quality requirements have had to be met for acceptance by all classes of purchasers. The trend to further severity in requirements is a challenge to the industry that commands full knowledge of the nature of raw materials at hand and skillful application of processing into commercial products.
