An experimental investigation has been made to study the effects of tooth angle and confining pressure on the force required for indentation of dry rock samples under confining pressure. In these experiments static single-tooth indentations were made on two standstones, a limestone, a schist and a slate under confining pressures of 5,000 to 15,000 psi. Sharp wedge-shaped teeth with included angles ranging from 30°to 105°were used. In all cases the force-displarenzent curves are approxinlately linear for rocks tested under confining pressure, as contrmted with the discontinuous curves obtained for silnilar rocks at atmospheric conditions. Photonzicrographs of thin sections through the craters indicate very little evidence of chip formation during indentation. In general the experimental data lie between calculated values for perfectly rough and perfectly smooth tooth-rock interfaces. INTRODUCTION The variables associated with ctrilling at depth are numerous and, in many instances, are not easity isolated and controlled. Also, many of these variables are interdependent; however, if the variables which are sufficiently independent of each other are held constant and are appropriately introduced, the dependent variables can be more easily studied and evaluated. It is the purpose of the present investigation to study experimentally the simplest case of bit tooth-rock interaction. In essence, the experiments have involved the static loading of sharp wedge-shaped tools on the surfaces of effectively semi-infinite dry rock samples subjected to confining pressures. During this investigation the following quantities have been maintained constant: 1. Pore pressure: atmospheric (i.e., the rock is dry). 2. permeability: although the rocks may be permeable, they are "jacketed" in such a manner that the fluid is not permitted to flow through them. 3. Temperature: 75F. 4. Rate of loading: essentially static (approximately 0.002 in./second). 5. Bit tooth: a sharp wedge-shaped tooth loaded normal to the rock surface. 6. Rock surface: smooth and flat. 7. Drilling fluid: hydraulic oil. In addition to the above conditions, the rock surface was free of a layer of cuttings. There was no indexing to previously indented surfaces, and the influence of corners of the borehole was neglected because the rock samples were effectively semi-infinite. The following quantities have been varied, and the resulting effects have been studied: 1. Rock a) Type (e.g., limestone, sandstone, etc.). b) Mechanical properties ) Necessarily dependent c) Porosity on type of rock. 2. Bit tooth (included angle of wedge-shaped tooth). 3. Depth of penetration. 4. cobfining pressure. On the basis of laboratory experiments which have shown that many rocks exhibit ductile behavior at confining pressures corresponding to depths usually reached during drilling,'.' a theory has previously been advanced which predicts the force required for penetration by a single sharp wedge tooth into a ductile* material.' The material is assumed to be isotropic, homogeneous and rigidly plastic (no elastic deformation) and to obey the Coubomb yield criterion (Figs. 1 and 2). Equations governing the force required for penelration are given for two extreme cases:** 1. INTRODUCTION From the lender's point of view, the greatest period of risk in a project financing occurs during the construction phase. Therefore, most projects are supported during this phase by completion guarantees supplied by some credit-worthy entity; for example, the project sponsors in the case of a joint venture, such as that of W.R. Grace, Hanna Mining, and Liberty Capital; or by a strong contract with a utility or foreign importer/investor, such as the way North American Coal Corporation has structured many of its transactions. THE PROJECT LOAN REQUEST A project financing is a more complex form of term loan than one using an ongoing corporation's balance sheet as a credit base and, therefore, a potential lender will subject the loan request to a more rigorous analysis. To support this effort, the financial institution will require a more detailed information memorandum to evaluate the credit and technical risks of a project - especially since much of the necessary information is not otherwise available. (See also Gibbs and Sroka paper above in this Chapter) A well-prepared information memorandum will impress prospective lenders with the planning ability and general competence of management. Also, the process of preparing the memorandum will help management understand the true extent of the opportunities and limitations of its venture. Appendix A outlines the topics which comprise a complete information memorandum for a loan request. Of some interest to those seeking to sell a currently-operating mining venture, a similar information memorandum should be prepared i.e., covering the same topics discussed here, for the investment banker to use with potential purchasers. For that purpose, though, one might not want to prepare quite as much detail as for a lender. Appendix B outlines the elements of a reserve evaluation and feasibility study, often called the "Bankable Document." Usually, these studies are prepared by independent engineering consultants for use by potential borrowers and sellers. (Potential purchasers will often contract for a similar study for their use in evaluating an acquisition.) ELEMENTS OF A LOAN INFORMATION MEMORANDUM 1. Outline: The information memorandum should begin with a one-page outline covering such topics as: a. The borrower's name, address, and phone number. b. Principal contact at the borrower. c. Amount of the proposed financing. d. Desired pricing and structure of the proposed financing. This should include a description of the amount and source of equity in the proposed financing. e. Use of the proceeds and timing. 2. Summary: The most important information contained in the memorandum should be summarized in two pages. Note - If the borrower is a recently-formed single-purpose company, then elements 3, 4, and 5 will apply to the guarantors of completion and to the project sponsors. 3. The Borrower: This section is a brief biography of the borrower including such topics as date and state of incorporation, founder(s), lines of business, etc. 4. Capitalization: The borrower's current debt and equity position, including leases and trade debt, with amounts, terms, names, and addresses enumerated. Equity owners, and percentage ownership, should be identified. 5. Historical Financial Statements: If available, a minimum of five year's worth of complete historical financial statements

STUDIES of surface relief and growth kinetics have lead to the concept that widmanstatten ferrite along with upper and lower bainite constitute a continuous series of decomposition products.1-4 Current models4 propose that these products form as plates with a coherent or semicoherent leading edge which propagates at a rate controlled by diffusion of carbon into the surrounding austenite. There are, however, important crystallographic and morphological differences between these products—particularly between upper and lower bainite. For example, upper bainite appears to exhibit a (11lIy orientation habit, whereas lower bainite develops with a more irrational habit near {2251y.5-7 Many of the morphological features of these decomposition products are not yet well-documented. Recent studiess have demonstrated that low-carbon martensites form as sheets of closely spaced needles on {lllly planes while higher-carbon martensites form as plates with {225}? or other orientation habits. The similarity in the crystallography of these two modifications of martensite with upper and lower bainite is striking. Therefore, a study of the morphology of bainite in a series of hypoeutec-toid alloy steels has been initiated to explore these relationships further. The question of immediate interest is whether upper and lower bainite form as plates or needles. A two-surface (approximately perpendicular) metallographic method was employed to study the morphology of bainite in a variety of low and medium alloy steels. Compositions of these steels have been reported elewhere. The behavior of 4340 and 4370 was typical and will be described here. Austenitizing treatments involved 20 min at 2350°F for 4340 and at 2000°F for 4370. Isothermal transformation was conducted in molten-salt baths. Upper bainite was produced at 925°F in the 4340 steel and lower bainite at 575°F in 4370 with transformation times adjusted to produce 10 to 15 pct of the decomposition product. Many of the morphological features of upper bainite have been catalogued in the recent literature.'' The two principal variants observed in the present investigation are illustrated in Fig. l(a). One form appears as long, thin plates or needles and the other as small, frequently irregularly shaped particles. Both variants may occur as isolated forms but more frequently appear in groups as demonstrated in Fig. l(a). Two-surface analysis reveals that these two variants constitute different sections through a single morphological form. To demonstrate this, a number of sections perpendicular to the plane of Fig. l(a) were prepared at various positions along the length of the elongated particles. A section taken at position 1 in Fig. l(a) is presented in Fig. l(b). Here, the dark line represents the edge of the sample and the left-hand portion of this photomicrograph is that from the surface perpendicular to the original plane of polish. Since it was necessary to repolish the original surface after each sectioning, the shape of the bainite particles on this surface, right hand side of Fig. l(b), changes with each sectioning. The disappearance of plate A, Fig. l(a), in Fig. l(b) emphasizes the small cross section of these structures. The group of particles in the lower left-hand

Production of crude oil in Tennessee during 1940 was slightly more than 15,000 bbl., a decrease from 1939 of about 36,000 bbl. This sharp decline has been caused largely by curtailed activities in the shallow pools in Clay County, where approximately 3000 bbl. was marketed off the lease during the year as against more than 37,000 bbl. in 1939. The flashy production found in 1938 in the Celina area has been short-lived and the area is essentially abandoned. Failure to find steady production has been the major factor retarding developments in the northeastern Highland Rim area. The Mississippi lime production in Scott and Morgan Counties continued to show a steady decline. The Tennessee production by counties is shown in Table I. Cumberland Platenu.—Thcre was one completion in the coal area of the state, a test that attempted to extend the Mississippi lime production in the Coon Hollow pool to the southeast in Morgan County. This test encountered only slight shows of oil in the producing horizons of the near-by Coon Hollow and Boone Camp pools. Some surface work was carried on by private interests during the year in Scott and Morgan Counties and two wells were spudded in early in 1941 The revival of interest in the Kentucky portion of the plateau will probably result in increased activity in this part of Tennessee during 1941. Several sizable blocks of acreage, some by major oil companies, are held in Scott, Morgan, and Cumberland Counties. Middle Tennessee.—The northeastern Highland Rim continued to be the most active area in the state with 20 completions, although this figure is about one third of the number drilled in 1939. Four oil wells, none with initial productions of more than I00 bbl., were completed in Clay, Fentress, and Pickett Counties. The producing horizons discovered in Pickett and Fentress Counties were in the "Sunny-brookJ' pays of Trenton age. The Clay County producer was an old test drilled deeper in which oil was found at 671 ft. in the upper part of the Stones River group of limestones, a common pay in this area. All four wells were drilled in or close to old shallow production. Deeper testing into the Knox dolomite group in this area was not particularly encouraging, although one well in Fentress County encountered some saturation at 1860 to 1869 ft. in the upper

IN a recent paper on titanium-rich Ti-Fe alloys,' the hardness of quenched powder specimens was given, together with the amounts of martensitic a they contained. The values disagreed in two respects with previous determinations that Worner² made on lump specimens: 1—Some martensitic a' is formed in powder specimens of alloys containing up to 12 atomic pct Fe. On the other hand, Worner reports that, although his results on quenched lumps are not conclusive, alloys containing more than about 4 pct Fe "appear to consist of retained ß'' although they "may not be strictly unaltered solid solutions." 2—According to Worner, quenched lump specimens show a maximum hardness at a composition about 3.5 pct Fe. Earlier -experiments by the authors showed a maximum hardness of martensitic alloys in powder form at 10 pct Fe. Accordingly, more experiments have been conducted in order to confirm these differences and to determine with more accuracy the minimum composition of quenched lump specimens that consist entirely of retained ß. Lump samples?x?x1/20 in. were quenched from 1000°C in helium and, on the whole, showed similar hardness values to the specimens that Worner water-quenched from 950°C. The hardness curve the authors obtained shows a more pronounced peak, but in other respects it is very similar to Worner's curve (Fig. 1). While it was possible to make fairly reliable measurements of the percentage of martensitic a in quenched powders (by Geiger spectrometer), the solid samples allowed only approximate estimates to be made from visual observation of line intensities on film. Retained ? begins to appear in quenched lumps containing 0.2 pct Fe; at 2.2 pct Fe there are approximately equal quantities of ß and a'; in a 4.7 pct Fe alloy only a trace of a' appears. These results are represented as a curve on Fig. 1. The hardness and constitution of powder samples were verified by repeating both types of quenching experiment described in the earlier paper.' Identical results were obtained by the two methods, and they agreed with the figures published previously (Fig. 1). The appearance of the martensitic structure under the microscope is shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The mar-tensite needles are coarser in the lump; otherwise the structures are similar. Three conclusions are made at this juncture: 1— The properties of quenched lumps reported by Worner are confirmed, on the whole. The differences between them and the properties of powders are probably due to an effect of specimen size. Differences of behavior in various sizes of specimen have been observed previously in martensite reactions in Fe-Mn alloys3 and in Cu-A1 alloys. 2—The maximum hardness of both quenched lumps and quenched powders appears at a composition where martensite formation has all but ceased. In this respect, powders and lumps behave similarly. 3—Martensitic a' has essentially the same microscopic appearance both in powders and lumps. Equations for the heat effects of additions of mixtures of multicomponent phases to a solution have been derived in terms of the enthalpy interaction coefficients. By these equations and the measured composition dependence of the heat effects on addition of mixtures of Ag-Cd solid solutions and elemental gold to liquid tin-rich solutions, values of the enthalpy in-teraction coefficients in tin-rich solutions at 541°K have been obtained. Analysis of these results in terms of the regular solution theory and the quasichemical theory suggests that near the melting point of the solvent association in the solution becomes important. SEVERAL recent papers have discussed the nature of dilute solutions on the basis of measured enthalpy interaction coefficients. l-3 These coefficients contribute to the understanding of the constitution of solutions and can be used for the evaluation of thermo-dynamic data of multicomponent systems. Their experimental determination, however, is laborious. This communication reports values of the enthalpy interaction coefficients of silver, cadmium, and gold in liquid tin-rich solutions obtained from the measured heat effects of additions of mixtures of Ag-Cd solid solutions and elemental gold to liquid tin-rich solutions. These measurements were made in the course of the determination of the heats of formation of Ag-Cd solid solutions reported in a concurrent publication.4 THE HEAT EFFECT OF AN ADDITION TO A SOLVENT This analysis is concerned with the addition of a mixture of multicomponent phases from the temperature To to a solvent of known composition at temperature T. HOWEVER good a furnace may be in regard to design, etc., or however excellent in the quality of the gas used, a suitable heat for the successful working of the metal cannot be obtained unless the melt be coated with a proper quantity of slag. This coating may be excessive or it may be deficient in quantity. The right degree of heat is the essential condition of successful working, for the quality of the steel made is never very good when the metal is allowed to simmer in the furnace for an excessive period, and this heat cannot be obtained if the metal is not protected by a proper covering of slag. This is not only to prevent the metal being over-oxidized and wasted, but also to prevent the metal being chilled when exposed with only a thin covering of slag. The slag may be obtained in either of two ways : 1, naturally, by the presence of sufficient silicon in the iron used, to unite with iron oxide to form a staple slag ; or, 2, by the addition of slag or free silica. In the first case the slag is formed naturally by the action of the oxygen in the flame - i.e., the oxidizing atmosphere of the furnace-on the silicon in the metal when melting. The charge then melts, as it is termed, "thick," and protects the banks from being cut. If too much silicon be present, however, and an excessive quantity of slag be formed, it will be found to be rather infusible, and unless care be taken to add the oxides quickly and follow the furnace up-thus rendering the slag more fusible by the extra iron oxide-the furnace bottom is liable to be pulled up. THE ore of the Southeast Missouri lead district consists essentially of galena in dolomitic limestone. The galena usually is in a very finely disseminated condition. The experience of recent years in the concentrating plants of the St. Joseph Lead Co. has shown that dry crushing carried to a point where about 90 per cent of the ore passes a 14-mesh screen liberates the larger portion of the galena, and minimizes further necessary reduction in rod or ball mills. Concentration practice has attempted to carry size reduction to a point where economic unlocking of the galena is obtained, without causing undue sliming of the very friable galena. While 60 per cent of the tonnage of the district is treated by the flotation process, only 40 per cent of the total concentrates is produced by that means, as efforts have always been made to keep the grade and tonnage of flotation feed as low as possible. The milling practice of the district for some years has recognized the generally accepted idea of better selective grinding in rod mills as compared with ball mills, with the attendant decrease in production of fines. The function of rod and ball mills in the various concentrating plants is the grinding of table middlings and coarse tailings that carry lead values too high to be discarded. The simplified flowsheet in Fig. I illustrates the place of grinding mills in the circuit. The arrangement of classifiers, tables and mills constitutes a closed circuit within somewhat flexible limits. In 1937 experiments were conducted in replacing the ball charge in a 6 by 4-ft. ball mill with rods 2 in. in diameter and 51 in. long. This step was taken with some hesitancy, as it was easy to picture a mass of tangled and crossed rods. However, no difficulties developed, and after a short trial period, six more ball mills were converted to rod mills. These mills are of the spur gear and pinion, belt-driven type, using in most cases a 75-hp. motor and having a 9 1/2 -in. open trunnion discharge. As ball mills, they carried a charge of 16,000 to 20,000 lb. of balls, 2 in. in original size. The feed to the mills was dewatered by dewatering wheels and introduced at 70 to 75 per cent solids, with a single scoop feeder. One change in mill design was found advisable when rods were introduced. The existing end liners had an outward flare of 3 ½ in. in 12 in. These were replaced by linings having vertical interior faces, in order to prevent undue end travel of the rods. This change gave an effective working length of 5 2 ¾ in. inside the mill. No alterations were made in the shell liners, which are of the smooth type, made of manganese steel 2 in. in original thickness. The rods at present in use are 51 in. long and 1 3/4in. in diameter. The composition has been varied at times; at present they contain 0.70 per cent carbon and 0.70 per cent manganese. Some breakage and etching occurs as the rods become small, but this is considered preferable to using softer rods, which may kink and cause tangling of the charge. This paper presents a correlation for predicting the critical pressures of gas-solvent-reservoir oil systems of the type encountered in gas and solvent injection processes. Experimental data from 14 systems were used to develop the correlation which expresses critical pressure as a function of composition, C7+ mol weight, and C7+ characterization factor. Critical pressures predicted by the correlation for the 14 gas-solvent-reservoir oil systems have an average deviation of 2.8 per cent of the experimental values. The correlation war used to study a wide variety of other hydrocarbon mixtures reported in the literature whose critical conditions are in the range of interest in oil recovery work (100 to 280F and 2,000 to 6,000 psia). Critical pressures predicted by the correlation had an average deviation, expressed as per cent of experimental value, of 5 per cent for 20 miscellaneous mixtures from the literature, and 6.4 per cent for I7 methane-butane-decane mixtures reported by Sage and Lucey. INTRODUCTION Predicting critical points of hydrocarbon mixtures is an important part of phase behavior calculations. If the critical point can be predicted for a specific mixture, the separation between the bubble-point and dew-point regions will be defined, and physical properties of the mixture can be calculated by using the principle of corresponding states. Numerous correlations for predicting critical points of hydrocarbon mixtures have been published. Six of these correlationsl-8 were for light hydrocarbons, and two correlations7,8 ere for high boiling-point petroleum distillates. Organick9 And Eilerts" presented correlations which combined the published data from both light and heavy mixtures, and these correlations became the only available methods for predicting critical pressures for wide boiling range mixtures. In the course of the authors&apos; work on secondary recovery by gas and solvent injection, experimental data were obtained for 14 mixtures of dry gas, ethane-propane-butane solvents, and various reservoir oils. The critical pressures and critical temperatures of these gas-solvent-reservoir oil systems were in the range of 1,900 to 4,800 psia and 180 to 265F. The critical pressures predicted for the 14 mixtures by the correlations of Organick and Eilerts had an average deviation from the measured values of about 13 per cent. The authors felt that it was necessary to develop a better correlation for engineering calculations and the resultant correlation, which is presented on Figs. 1 and 2, predicts the critical pressures of the 14 mixtures with an average deviation of 2.8 per cent. The validity of the correlation was tested by applying the correlation to other hydrocarbon mixtures reported in the literature. This subject is discussed later in the paper. The authors feel that there is also a need for an improved critical temperature correlation for gas-solvent-reservoir oil systems. However, developing a critical temperature correlation is a significant study in itself and is not included in this paper. EXPERIMENTAL DATA The compositions and critical points obtained by the authors for 14 gas-solvent-reservoir oil mixtures are shown on Table 1. The methane concentrations in these mixtures varied from 20 to 63 mol per cent. The intermediate hydrocarbon group, consisting of ethane, propane, and butane, varied from 20 to 64 mol per cent, and the concentration of the C,, fraction from 10 to 20 mol per cent. The physical properties of the C,, fraction covered the range from light, paraffinic, nonasphaltic (Mixtures 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10) to heavy, aromatic, and asphaltic (Mixtures 13 and 14).

Probability sizing, a fairly recent development in the field of particle separation, is now under investigation to determine its value to the mining industry. The method employed is probability sizing through a vibrating network of decreasing screen openings. While probability sizing is not new, the possibility of using it for coarse, highly abrasive ores at high tonnage rates has only recently appeared to merit practical consideration. The advantages of probability sizing vs. conventional screening methods are: (1) reduced space requirements for a high capacity unit, (2) fewer moving parts, (3) more versatile product sizing selection, (4) reduced maintenance requirements, and (5) lower power consumption. Screening is a necessary part of virtually every crushing circuit. At some stage in the process, particle separation becomes a controlling factor in the operation. The basic type of screen in use today is the vibrating unit, which usually employs a mechanical vibrator of one type or another to obtain sizing and material transportation across the screen surface. The vibrating screen has its limitations and inherent problems. Operators must live with: (1) high maintenance — worn rods, screen cloth, spacers, cross members, chutes, etc., (2) low capacity in relation to floor space requirements, (3) extreme noise levels, (4) high power consumption, and (5) structural problems in the screens and supporting steelwork. All plant operators have become tolerant of these drawbacks through the years, and little innovation has been developed in screening. The vibrating screens in use today incorporate improved metals, more efficient power sources, better lubricants, and increased manufacturing skill, but the basic machine itself remains unchanged. Screening is a relatively small part of most plants&apos; operating expenditures and gets relatively little attention from research and development. The HiProb sizer is a new approach to the problem of particle separation on a high tonnage basis. Developed by Dr. Fredrik Mogensen (president of Fred-rik Mogensen, A. B. of Djursholn, Sweden), this unit has found its primary acceptance in the sizing of wet or dry materials in the fine ranges. Climax has been working cooperatively with Mine and Smelter Supply Company, the United States licensee, on the adaptation of the sizer to obtain consistent recovery at a high tonnage rate on a — 3/8-in. separation. This was a new application for the sizer and opened up a whole new field of problems. Dr. Mogensen&apos;s machine utilizes the control of normal probability of falling particles and is designed to eliminate some of the undesirable features of vibrating screens mentioned earlier. The machine is light, compact, consumes less power than conventional screens and has a low noise level. PRINCIPLES Probability sizing is a process designed to allow solid particles to segregate with a high ratio of the materials reporting into their respective size fractions with a minimum amount of misplaced particles. Sizing is defined in this paper as segregation of dry solid particles into fractions of comparable sizes. Probability is usually estimated as the ratio of the number of ways an event might occur vs. the total number of allowable ways. The probability process described depends upon the fact that particles falling through a network will segregate across the sizing surface even though all openings are larger than the particles. The degree of segregation is dependent upon the particle size and the trajectory applied by the sizing network to each falling particle. Specifically, the process utilizes a maze made up of screen cloth to control the path of a particle in free fall as illustrated in Fig. 1. The usefulness of this probability sizing process is dependent upon the degree of efficiency of an effective maze. Primarily, a maze must be extremely flexible to meet the multi-faceted nature of solid particles and, at the same time, the degree of control must be reproducible so that a desired separation is predictable. Dr. Fredrik Mogensen has formulated a maze that is not only flexible and easily controlled, but, mote importantly, easily adaptable to a working machine.

A method is presented for the accurate calculation of the cricondentherm and cricondenbar pressures of multicomponent hydrocarbon mixtures of known composition. The mixtures may contain six and quite possibly any number of components including paraffins, isoparaffins, olefins, acetylenes, naphthenes and aromatics. The approach is similur to that used for calculating critical pressures and cricondentherm and cricondenbar temperatures. The critical pressure, the normal boiling point and the approximate vapor pressure behavior of each component are all that art required. A stepwise culculation procedure is necessary for mixtures containing more than two components. From an analysis of 22 binary systems and 118 mixtures, the average deviation of calculated cricondentherm pressures from reported values is 2.4 per cent. For nine multicomponent mixtures the average deviation is 1 per cent. Considering 19 binary systems and 108 mixtures, the average deviation of calculated cricondenbar pressures from reported values is 1.7 per cent. For 15 multi-component mixtures, the average deviation is 2.2 per cent. INTRODUCTION A knowledge of the phase behavior in the critical region of multicomponent hydrocarbon mixtures is of value both in industrial processing operations and for the optimum operation of gas condensate reservoirs. Accurate methods of calculating the critical temperatures and critical pressures4,6,7,8,9,23 and cricondentherm and cricondenbar temperatures6p10 of multicomponent hydrocarbon mixtures are available in the literature. If the cricondentherm and cricondenbar pressures could be calculated with equal accuracy, the entire phase diagram of a multicomponent hydrocarbon mixture could be well approximated. The work of Etter and Kay6 is limited to systems containing the normal paraffins and has not been tested on systems containing a heavier component than heptane. In addition, the development of their multicomponent equations is based upon a limited number of mixtures containing from three to six components. Silverman and Thodos have considered systems containing both paraffinic and non-paraffinic hydrocarbons, but their correlation is limited to binary systems and is highly inaccurate for methane systems. Eilerts has done extensive work on the cricondenbar pressure; he has produced an excellent correlation for binary systems. However, his procedure for multicomponent mixtures is chiefly useful for highly complex mixtures requiring a knowledge of the vapor-liquid equilibrium behavior of the mixtures; he has not considered the cricondentherm pressure. The objective of this study was the development of an accurate and rapid method for the calculation of the cricondentherm and cricondenbar pressures of multicomponent mixtures containing all types of hydrocarbons and having a wide volatility range. The approach that was adopted is similar to that used by Grieves and Thodos for cricondentherm and cricondenbar temperaturesl0 and for critical pressures.9 However, methane systems had to be considered separately and a modified stepwise calculation procedure was utilized for the cricondertherm pressure. The correlations were developed in a manner similar to those for critical pressures and cricondentherm and cricondenbar temperatures. Based upon binary data reported in the literature it was observed that the ratios of cricondentherm and cricondenbar pressure to the pseudocritical pressure (molar average), pt/ppc and pp/ppc, respectively, in two-component systems depended upon the mole fraction of the low-boiling component and upon the diversity in properties of the two components. A dimensionless boiling-point parameter Tb,/Tb was chosen to represent the diversity in properties of the components. For a binary system, Ti,&apos;is the molar average of the normal boiling points of the two components involved. For a multicomponent system it is either the molar average of the normal boiling points of all of the components involved or the molar average of the normal boiling point of the pure low-boiling component and of the atmospheric boiling point of the low-boiling-free mixture of

IN recent studies of the factors which affect the rate of desulphurization and its equilibrium, it became apparent that certain concurrent reactions were operative which had a significant effect on desulphurization. This is emphasized in the experiments of Hatch and Chipman1 and of Grant, Kalling, and Chipman&apos; by the slow approach to a final state of equilibrium which is in marked contrast to the initial rapid transfer of sulphur from metal to slag. Since the removal of sulphur is of such profound importance in iron and steelmaking, it appeared necessary to investigate the reactions responsible for this behavior. It is now known that the presence of iron oxide in the slag interferes seriously with the principal reaction of blast-furnace desulphurization: CaO (slag) +-S + C - CaS (slag) + CO [l] The interfering reaction is most simply expressed as: CaS (slag) + 0 = CaO (slag) +-S 121 and a small concentration of oxygen (or FeO) is sufficient to hold a considerable amount of sulphur in the metal. It has been shown by Grant, Kalling, and Chipman2 that the addition of MnO to blast-furnace slag slows the removal of sulphur from the metal. This effect overshadows the contribution of MnO to basicity and is ascribed to its oxidizing power. It will be shown in this paper that SiO, also has sufficient oxidizing power to interfere with blastfurnace desulphurization. This is, of course, only one of its several effects. Primarily it is an acid and therefore reduces the concentration of excess lime. But when silicon is reduced to the metal the oxygen to which it was previously bonded becomes in part available for reaction 2. The proof of this statement is found in the following experiments. Experimental Procedure and Results Utilizing the same procedure and apparatus described by Grant, Kalling, and Chipman&apos; five additional heats were made using slags IV and 11, the starting compositions of which were: slag IV—40 CaO, 10 MgO, 35 SiO,, 15 A1,0,; and slag 11—50 CaO, 10 MgO, 25 SiO,, 15 Al3O3. An important difference between these heats and those previously reported was that silicon to the extent of 1 to 4 pct was added to the present heats whereas the starting silicon content was formerly about 0.2 pct. Table I shows the slag and metal analyses for heats 82 to 87, and Table I1 shows the silicon addi- tions made to the charge. These additions are based on 400 g of metal and 400 g of slag. All heats had 1.65 400pct S charged before the cold slagadditions. The temperature was maintained at 1525°C. Rate of SiO, Reduction: Fig. 1 shows the silicon content of the metal in contact with slag IV at 1525°C as a function of time. Heat 70 from the work of Grant, afunctionKalling,of and Chipman is included as the lowest starting silicon. It will be noted that eeven with 4 pct Si in the starting metal, there is an increase in silicon content with time. Heat 84 is apparently approaching silicon equilibrium very slowly. Heats 70 and 82 with very much lower slowly.starting silicon show a more rapid initial rise in startingsilicon content but do not reach equilibrium during a long holding period. Fig. 2 shows 3 different initial silicon contents for Fig.2shows3differentheats 73 (from Grant, Kalling, and Chipman) 86 and 87, in contact with slag II, the most basic slag. Heat 73 is increasing in silicon with time, whereas heat 87 with an initial silicon content of 3.7 pct shows a decrease with time. Heat 86 shows a very close approach to equilibrium. The rate of transfer of silicon from slag to equilibrium.metal is very slow in all of those heats, even those which are initially far from equilibrium. ____

measurements of the anisotropy in Young&apos;s modulus produced in copper by rolling 95 pct reduction in thickness below room temperature have been carried out in order to study the dependence of the texture on rolling temperature. The results clearly show the transition from a copper-type texture to a brass-type texture as the temperature of rolling is lowered. The intermediate textures observed can be described very well as a simple mixture of the two terminal textures. These results cormbined with other texture measurements make possible afresh review of the experimental facts velating to rolling textures in fee metals and, as a consequence, a critical examination of the current theories is presented. PREVIOUS experiments have shown that the transition from the copper- to the brass-type rolling texture is clearly displayed and can be quantitatively analyzed by measurements of the anisotropy of Young&apos;s modulus.&apos; Application of this method to the Cu-Zn alloy system showed that the description of the texture transition as a gradual rotation of the grains from the orientation characteristic of the copper texture to the {110}(112) texture of brass2 was inconsistent with the data. Instead, the data suggested that the texture within the transition region could be described as a simple mixture of the two terminal textures.5 Unfortunately, it was difficult to establish this point conclusively because of the inadequacy of corrections for the composition dependence of the single-crystal elastic constants. Since a rigorous establishment of the nature of this texture transition is essential to our understanding of the formation of rolling textures in fee metals, it is clearly important to undertake an investigation in which the composition dependence of the elastic constants would not enter. A suitable composition-independent texture transition is provided by the well-established variation in the rolling texture of copper with rolling temperature. This temperature-dependent texture transformation has been studied by smallman&apos; in several fee alloys and by Müller5 and others"&apos; in copper. They observed that the texture characteristic of copper rolled at room temperature changed to a brass-type texture when the rolling temperature was lowered to 77°K. Although it is not possible to decide unequivocally from the published pole figures whether or not the 77°K rolling texture of copper is entirely of the brass type,&apos; this complication does not affect the main purpose of the present investigation. In addition to establishing the nature of the texture within the transition region, the modulus data should also provide a determination of the temperature at which the transition occurs as well as the temperature range over which the transition extends. This information when combined with the modulus data on Cu-Zn alloys would then provide a considerable body of new information on textures in fee metals. Since these modulus results and the data obtained from pole-figure studies must be internally consistent, it is appropriate to compile a brief summary of the experimental observations based on all available methods rather than on the pole-figure data alone as has been done in the past. The primary purpose of such a summary would be to yield a more precise definition of the experimental facts on the rolling textures of fee metals, and thus greatly facilitate our evaluation of various proposed theories in this field. The final section of this paper is devoted to this compilation of consistent, experimental facts and their application to the various theories. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Two 18-lb ingots of cathode copper of 99.99 pct purity were induction-melted under a nitrogen atmosphere in a graphite crucible and chill-cast into a steel mold. The ingots were repeatedly cold-rolled and annealed (I hr at 500°C) into slabs about 1 1/8 in. thick. Blocks 3 1/4 in. wide, 2 1/4 in. long, and 1.000 in. thick were machined from each slab. The rolling schedule used was the same as in the previous investigation1 and the final thickness of the sheet was 0.050 in. with a rolling reduction of thickness of 95 pct instead of 97.5 pct as in the previous work.&apos; The compositions and temperatures of the cold baths used for the low-temperature rolling were as shown in Table I. After each pass the rolled strip was immediately immersed in the cold bath for about 1 min or until the bubbling of the bath had subsided. The modulus data were taken within 2 hr after the rolled strip was warmed to room temperature for the first time, so that effects due to recrystallization were minimized. The modulus specimens were in the shape of flat bars, 3 in. long, 4 in. wide, and 0.050 in. thick, cut with their long dimensions oriented at 15-deg intervals between the rolling direction and the transverse direction. The values of Young&apos;s modulus were deduced from measurements of the frequency at which these long narrow bars were set into longitudinal, resonant vibration as previously described.9 To excite the mechanical vibrations in the specimen, an electromagnetic drive similar to that employed by Thompson and lass" was used. A creep mechanism based on cross slip of dislocations around The O2 particles can satisfactovily explain the low-temperature (T < 0.5 T,) cveep behavior, and the follo wing relation is applicable: Q, (a) is found to decrease from 57 to 46 kcal per mole as the stress is increased from 32,000 to 36,000 psi. THERE have been a variety of theories proposed to explain the influence of dispersed second-phase particles on the yield strength and flow stress of metals, and these have been reviewed recently by Kelly and icholson.&apos; However, only several attempts2"4 have been made to develop mechanistic treatments which characterize the creep behavior of dispersion-strengthened metals, and to date these have not been fully evaluated experimentally. weertman2 and Ansell and weertman3 proposed a quantitative creep theory for coarse-grairzed dispersion-strengthened metals, based on the concept that the rate-controlling process for steady-state creep was the climb of dislocations over second-phase particles, as suggested by choeck. The theory predicted that the steady-state creep rate, <,, was proportional to the applied stress, a, for low stresses and that is a4 o for high stresses. The activation energy for creep, Q,, was equivalent to that for self-diffusion, Qs.d., in the matrix. Some limited experimental evidence in support of this theory was obtained on a recrystallized Al-Alz03 S.A.P.-type alloy by Ansell and Lenel.6 Ansell and weertman3 also developed a semiquanti-tative theory for high-temperature creep of lineg-rained dispersion-strengthened metals in order to explain their results on an extruded S:A.P.-type alloy, which had a fine-grained fibrous structure. They suggested that the rate of dislocation generation from grain boundaries was the rate-controlling process, and fitted their results to the equation: where Q, was found to be 150 kcal per mole, i.e., QC- 4Q,.d. in aluminum. Similar high activation energies for creep7-&apos;&apos; and tensile deformation" of dispersion-strengthened alloys have been observed by other investigators for S.A.P.,&apos;" indium-glass bead omosites, and Ni + A1203 alls.&apos; There is no general agreement regarding the mechanisms involved in the creep of dispersion-strengthened metals, and this is due in part to the lack of detailed studies relating the structures of crept specimens to the mechanical behavior. The present investigation on thoriated nickel was undertaken with the aim of studying the structural changes which occur during creep of a dispersion-strengthened alloy and rationalizing the observed mechanical behavior in terms of the creep structures. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The material used in this investigation was 1/2-in.-diam TD Nickel bar, which contained 2.3 vol pct Tho,. Obtained from E. I. duPont de Nemours & Co., Inc. The final fabrication treatment by DuPont consisted of -95 pct reduction by swaging followed by a 1-hr anneal at 1000°C. Transmission and replica electron microscopy revealed that the material had a fine-grained fibered structure with an average transverse grain size of -1 p and a longitudinal grain size of 10 to 15 p. Selected-area diffraction indicated that the fiber axis was parallel to (OOl), in agreement with the results of Inman eta1." All creep specimens were vacuum-annealed at 1300°C for 3 hr prior to testing. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the only structural change due to annealing was a slight decrease in dislocation density, confirming the reported high degree of structural stability.13 Furthermore, recrys-tallization or grain growth during creep was never observed. The structure typical of uncrept material (after the 1300 C, 3-hr anneal) is shown in Fig. 1. The grain boundaries are predominantly high angle and. although some areas show a tangled cell structure, the grain interiors are relatively dislocation-free. Individual dislocations are strongly pinned by the Tho2 particles; i.e., very rarely did dislocations move within a thin foil. The grey "halos" around some of the larger particles which protrude out of the foil surface arise from contamination in the electron microscoge. The Tho, particle size ranged from -100 to IOOOA, and the distribution is shown in Fig. 2. The technique used to obtain the data in Fig. 2 consisted of dissolving the nickel matrix in acid, collecting the Tho2 particles on cellulose acetate, and measuring about 1000 particle diameters in the electron microscope. Similar results were obtained by measuring about 600 particles in thin foils, an; the average particle size was found to be 2r, = 370A. In contrast, the pox structuve, a set of projections often veported in the literature, leaves no trace oj. segvegation. These obserl;atims, accovlrpanied by a brief review of recent literature, point to inconsistencies between experirrental obsevvation and the idea that the fornzation of a projection is a causal step in the development of a cellular substructure. An argument is presented to show instead how it is plausible for substantial depvessiom to form in the pvesence of constitutional supercooling at dislocations threading the solid-liquid interjace. THE development of constitutional supercooling during growth from the melt leads to the formation of the cellular solidification substructure. This well-founded association between structure and instability has been basic in understanding cellular substructure and micro segregation; however, the initial formation of structure seems unclear. Rutter and Chalmers,&apos; in definitive experiments and theory, noted that in the presence of constitutional a planar interface might break down: "resulting in the formation of a small projection on an initially plane or uniformly curved interface." That is, the breakdown from a planar to a cellular interface was implied to be initiated via a projection into the unstable liquid. Later, Walton et (11. found that a structure of isolated projections, termed "pox", appeared at solid-liquid interfaces decanted under growth conditions near the onset of constitutional supercooling; the pox were taken as the indication of the instability promoted by the supercooling. Tiller and Rutter4 in their extensive work studied the shape transitions at decanted interfaces which were generally observed to proceed as— pox, "irregular cells", elongated cells, regular (hexagonal) cells, and so forth. The pox varied in size from lo-&apos; to 1CT4 cm, and tended to disappear as cells increased in number and regularity, but as noted,4 the first real array of cells did not seem to be a development from the pox. In fact these authors implied a lack of connection because they stated that the pox are denser on "irregular cells", and as cell boundaries increase in number (i.e., the cells become smaller) there is less need for the pox which do dis- appear. Thereafter, most authors dealing with either experiment or theory have accepted the reality of pox and have used them as a criterion for the onset of constitutional supercooling. In contrast, Spittle, Hunt, and smiths have now suggested that pox are irrelevant artifacts comprised of such things as entrapped oxide. This proposal invokes the observations of weinberg6 and chadwick7 each of whom have shown that the act of decanting leaves a residual liquid on a decanted interface; the remnant solid layer of the order 10 p may thus contain particles that might have been transported from the external surfaces, or elsewhere, during decanting. With the incentive of this suggestion,= some further experiments and a reexamination of the literature have been conducted, in order to question the validity of pox as evidence of an instability and to examine the initial development of the cellular substructure. 1) EXPERIMENTS Single crystals of zone-refined tin (-99.9999 pct) were grown from the melt in a controlled fashion with various, small concentration additions of lead and antimony, for which ko < 1 and > 1, respectively. The crystals were decanted at conditions near the onset of constitutional supercooling and were thus appropriate for observation of slight perturbations. It was possible to observe two types of small departure from smooth or "planar" interfaces in both cases of lead or antimony additions. Some were projections and others, if in regular array of any type, were depressions. The crystals were etched with suitable reagents progressively dissolving the decanted interface surface; projections left no record, but depressions were continuously associated with spotlike areas contrasting with the rest of the interface. Traverses were made with the beam of an electron microprobe across the regions of contrast; with lead addition the persistent spots were lead-rich, and with antimony addition the persistent spots were antimony-poor. This is consistent only with a dominant role for depressions, because if the projections had left spots but were incorrectly catalogued, a reversed observation should have been made; that is, the Pb(ko < 1) should have been depleted and the Sb(ko > 1) enriched. In the work of Cole and inegard, and elewhere, regular arrays of structure associated with the initial stage of instability have been shown, in photographs and represented as pox or projections. We believe this to be erroneous, by inference, since whenever a regular array was observed, in the present examination, it consisted of depressions, regardless of the nature of the solute, ko 1. Fig. 1 is reproduced8 as an ideal example of the possible optical illusion involved; the observer can satisfy himself from the distribution of illuminated areas that the markings are depressions. The reaction between CO, and aluminum in cryolite-alumina melts in contact with aluminum has been studied by passing CO2 over the melt. In unstirred melts a homogeneous reaction between dissolved metal and dissolved CO2 was observed. In stirred melts in which convection was induced by bubbling argon through the melt, the dissolved metal apparently reacted mainly with gaseous CO2. The rate of formation of CO increased slightly with increasing depth of the melt, and it did not depend on whether CO2 was passed over or bubbled through the melt. The rate of formation of CO increased with increasing area of the metal/melt interface and with the application of anodic current to the metal. It is concluded that the dissolution of metal into the melt is the rate-determining reaction. THE current efficiency in aluminum electrolysis is determined by the rate of the recombination reaction between the anode gas and the metal: 2A1 + 3CO2—A12O3 + 3CO [1] as originally stated by Pearson and waddington.1 The occurrence of this reaction in cryolite-alumina melts in contact with aluminum was first verified experimentally by Schadinger.2 Thonstad3 has shown that the reaction may proceed further to give free carbon: 2A1 + 3CO— A12O3 + 3C [2] Normally only a few percent of the CO formed undergoes such reduction. The mechanism of these reactions has not yet been clarified. Aluminum, as well as CO,, is soluble in the melt. The solubility of aluminum in cryolite-alumina melts at around 1000°C corresponds to 75 x 10- 6 mole A1 per cu cm,4 while that of CO2 is only 3 x 10-6 mole CO, per cu cm.5 Taking into account the stoichiometry of Reaction [I], the ratio between dissolved aluminum and dissolved CO2 available for the reaction in a saturated melt is about 40. Therefore, as will be shown in the following, the reaction probably mainly occurs between gaseous COa and dissolved aluminum. The dissolved aluminum presumably consists of subvalent ions of aluminum and sodium.4&apos;6 Since the interpretation of the present results is not dependent upon the nature of this solution, the dissolved metal will be designated solely as Al+ in the following. The reaction can then be divided into four steps: A) dissolution of metal, e.g., 2A1 + Al3 — 3A1+ [3] B) diffusion of dissolved metal through a boundary layer; C) transport of dissolved metal through the bulk of the melt; D) Reaction [1]. If dissolved CO, takes part in the reaction, three additional steps embodying the dissolution and transport of CO2 must be added. schadinger2 observed, when bubbling CO2 through the melt, that the rate of formation of CO (in the following designated rfco) did not depend on the distance from the metal surface. The results also indicate that the rate of bubbling did not affect the rfco. When passing CO, over the melt, Revazyan7 found that the loss of metal did not depend on the depth of the melt above the metal or on the flow rate of CO2, and concluded that Step A is rate-determining. In an unstirred melt, however, Gjerstad and welch8 found that the rfCo decreased with increasing depth of the melt, indicating that step C was rate-determining. It thus appears that the rate control of the process depends on the experimental conditions, particularly on the convection. In the present measurements the reaction has been studied in unstirred as well as in stirred melts. EXPERIMENTAL AND RESULTS The experiments were carried out at 1000°C in a Kanthal furnace with a 10-cm uniform temperature zone (±0.l°C). The melts were made up of "super purity" aluminum (99.998 pct), hand-picked natural cryolite, and reagent-grade alumina. In experiments where alumina crucibles were used, the alumina content in the melt was close to saturation (13.5 wt pct9); otherwise it was 4 wt pct. Pure Co2 (99.85 pct) was passed over the melt, and the exit gas was analyzed for CO2 and CO by the conventional absorption method.3 From the weighed amount of CO (as CO2) the rfco was calculated as the number of moles of CO formed per min per sq cm of the surface area of the melt. The amount of carbon formed by Reaction [2] was not determined. As already indicated the rfco is much higher than the rfC, by Reaction [2]. Since the rfC probably is proportional to the rfco, the measured rfco should then the proportional to, but slightly lower than, the total rate of Reactions [I] and 121. In general the scatter of results obtained in duplicate measurements was ±5 to 10 pct, while within a given run a precision of ±3 to 5 pct was obtained. The various crucible assemblies that were used will be described below. Measurements in Unstirred Melts. When carrying out aluminum electrolysis in small alumina crucibles. Tuset10 observed that after solidification the lower part of the electrolyte was gray and contained free metal, while the upper part near the anode was white and contained no metal. One may test for the presence of free metal by treating with dilute hydrochlorid acid.

THE professional career of Thomas Septimus Austin, who died at El Paso, Tex., August 23, 1906, was contemporaneous with the growth of the silver-lead smelting-industry of the Far West, to which his talents and zeal contributed in no small degree. Born at Stratford, Conn., December 7, 1853, he was the seventh son in a family of thirteen. His parents were well-to-do; and he received a thorough preliminary training at the Hopkins Grammar School, New Haven, Conn., passing thence to the Columbia School of Mines, in New York, where he was graduated in 1876. His first professional work was that of analytical chemist with a Cuban sugar company. In this position he spent a year, and, whatever else of benefit he may have acquired during that year in Cuba, he gained a facility of speech in the Spanish language which was of inestimable value in his subsequent work in Mexico and the southwestern United States. In 1877, he went to the Rocky Mountains, and, under the firm name of Murphy & Austin, opened an assay-office in Leadville, Colo., which was just then coming into public notice as a rich silver-lead camp. The next year, however, he entered the service of the Germania Smelting & Refining Co. at Salt Lake City, Utah, where he remained until 1882, first as assayer and chemist, and later as Assistant Superintendent. The Germanic bears the honorable distinction of being one of the first of the large " custom " lead-smelters erected in the West. Its founders may be called the pioneers of the modern lead-smelting practice, and the Germania served, to a large extent, as a model for the many plants that sprang into existence during the next few years in Utah, southern Idaho, Colorado and other lead-producing districts. OF all the machinery used in mining work, mine cars are probably the most abused. They are hauled through water and muck, up hill and down grade, whipped around curves, bumped and jerked, and exposed to the ravages of the weather. However, as a general rule their lubrication is not altogether neglected. The mine operator may not heed the extra drag that a frozen conveyor bearing gives, but he is all too aware of the increased load that faulty mine car wheels put on his power plant. When the circuit breakers begin to fly, and when his mine loco- motives come out with only half the cars that they were able to carry a month before, then neglected mine car wheel lubrication becomes apparent, and woe to the person responsible.

Fuller’s earth is an inexact term applied to certain clays that have a marked ability to adsorb coloring materials from animal, vegetable, and mineral oils. Many clays have this adsorbing power to a slight or very limited degree, and certain other clays, chiefly bentonites, as well as minerals such as bauxite, can be made highly adsorbent by activation with acids or alkalies, but the term fuller&apos;s earth is generally reserved for clays that are naturally highly adsorptive. In most fuller&apos;s earths and practically all activable clays montmorillonite is a dominant mineral. No definite clay mineral or group is implied in the name fuller&apos;s earth, and the distinction between fuller&apos;s earth and other clays that have more or less bleaching power is not sharply drawn. The name as generally used has no genetic or mineralogical significance. The fuller&apos;s earth produced in the Florida-Georgia district contains the clay mineral attapulgite. This mineral name was first used in 1930 by DeLapparent to apply to a hydrous aluminum magnesium silicate found in the fuller&apos;s earth from Attapulgus, Ga., and Quincy, Fla. An essential component of its structure, determined by Bradley in 1940, is that the silica chains of the molecule are arranged similarly to those of the amphibole minerals. The fibrous nature of the lath-like crystals of attapulgite is apparent under magnifications reached by the electron microscope. The ideal formula, [(OH,), (OH), Mg, Si, 0,-4H,O], contains no aluminum, but there is considerable replacement of the magnesium by aluminum. In the classification of clay minerals, attapulgite is associated with sepiolite and polygorskite rather than with mont-morillonite.
