The importance of cold-working in the fabrication of metals is in marked contrast with our ignorance as to the nature of the accompanying internal changes. The failure of the usual methods of testing to provide a consistent picture of these internal changes has given the incentive for the present program of investigating the effect of cold-working upon the internal friction of metals measured at small strain amplitudes. It has previously been shown1,2,3, that the internal friction introduced by cold-work is removed by annealing at comparatively low temperatures. In the present paper the following additional factors are investigated: (I) frequency of measurement, (2) amount of cold-work, (3) temperature of measurement. Special care was taken to minimize the internal friction due to causes other than cold-work. The present paper is purely experimental, the authors believing that any conclusions drawn from this work as to the nature of the internal changes accompanying cold-work would be premature.'l PrEpaRations oF Specimens In this study of cold-work it was desirable to eliminate as far as possible all other sources of internal friction. One disturbing source is the lack of temperature equilibrium between adjacent crystallites of a vibrating specimen.4 Temperature equilibrium is aided by small grain size and by the use of low-frequency vibrations. Unless unduly long specimens are used, low frequencies can be obtained only in transverse vibrations. But in transverse vibrations a second source of internal friction is present, that arising from transverse thermal currents.5 The effect of these may be reduced by increasing the transverse dimensions. The grain size and transverse dimensions of the specimens were thus so chosen as to render the vibrations simultaneously nearly isothermal with respect to intercrystalline thermal currents, and nearly adiabatic with respect to transverse thermal currents. The material for this investigation was a 70-30 brass, part of the same lot of material that was used for some earlier studies on the effect of strain on proportional limit.10 It had the following composition: copper, 70.59 per cent; zinc, 29.39; lead, 0.01; iron, 0.01. This material was received from the brass mill in the form of 3/4-in. rod, cold-drawn to final size by a 65 per cent reduction of area from material that had been annealed to give a grain size of 0.060 mm, Rods of appropriate length were annealed for 2 hr. at 400°C. and cooled in air. The annealed rods (grain size, 0.012 mm.) were then stretched in a tension-testing machine, using special grips1' to ensure axial application of the load. The rate

PROBLEMS in expressing, interpreting, and using size-distribution data recur in many phases of mineral dressing; therefore it is desirable that size analyses be expressed in such a form, either numerically or graphically, that comparisons can be made readily. The size distribution of comminuted material is a result of a specific physical operation on the material and therefore should be governed by some definite physical principle, or cause-effect relation. Although this principle has not been discovered, it has been found that the size distribution of comminuted, homogeneous solids may be expressed by relatively simple mathematical equations. Two equations in particular, proposed by Gaudin1 and by Rosin and Rammler,2 respectively, have stood out, both having wide demonstrated ranges of application. The form and the method of application of the two appear almost irreconcilably different on the surface, but, as will be shown, they are asymptotic in the fine sizes when expressed in the same units. This paper gives the results of a further study of the Gaudin and Rosin-Rammler relations, made with the object of developing a form of size-distribution equation that will be more usable and more significant-particularly in comminution studies, both for interpreting the nature of size distribution and for evaluating surface. The work is summarized in the following: I. An equation relating cumulative per cent finer to particle size in the fine sizes is derived from Gaudin's original equation. That equation relates weight per cent retained on one size and through the next larger size in a geometric series of sizes to size (of the retaining screen, for example). 2. Comparisons with Gaudin's equation and with the Rosin-Rammler equation show that the cumulative equation applies to the fine sizes of all size distributions that fit either of these earlier relations, and, furthermore, has some advantages over each. 3. A simple graphical method of surface calculation based on the cumulative-equation plot is evolved and illustrated. 4. Additional confirmation of the cumulative equation was obtained in the more severe test of sizing down to the limit of a sedimentation balance a sample of jaw-crushed quartz. The equation was closely followed over a 20o-fold range in size, from approximately 0.4 mm. (35 mesh) down to 0.0023 mm. (2.3 microns), the lower limit of the size analysis made. There is no indication that the equation will not hold further to well below 2.3 microns. 5. Calculations of the surface produced in the jaw-crushing test mentioned above showed that at least 8o per cent of the total new surface was on particles finer than 35 mesh (about ½ 5 of the crusher setting). FOR some time melters and metallurgists have recognized the fact that steels may be made to identical compositions as ordinarily analyzed, but with considerable variations in physical properties. Good melting practice signifies a combination of furnace operations that will produce steel with consistently good physical properties after proper consideration of cost, production efficiency, and chemical control. In acid practice, these operations may be classified fundamentally as: (I) the oxidizing boil, (2) recarburization and deoxidation, (3) slag adjustment, and (4) final deoxidation. These operations affect the properties of the steel through variations in the minute quantities of several microscopic, submicroscopic, and dissolved constituents, which are out of reach of ordinary analyses but are very influential upon the crystallographic slippage and the molecular cohesion of the structure. One of these constituents is the FeO left in solution in the steel. Herty has shown that steels high in dissolved FeO have decreased ductility and impact and increased hardness and electrical resistance. There is also much evidence that FeO in solution affects carbon solubility and diffusion, and consequently abnormality and carburizing behavior.

HOT pressing of powder particles has gained importance recently, since it affords a method in which high densities are rapidly attained. In a recent study on hot pressing of alumina powders, Mangsen, Lam-bertson, and Best1 have shown within the limits of their experiment, the validity the rate equation for densification in hot pressing, originally proposed by Murray, Livey, and Williams.2 i.e., where D = fraction of theoretical density, t = time, P = pressure and 77 is the viscosity, all in appropriate units. This equation was derived from earlier work of Shuttleworth and Mackenzie3 which is based on the closing of spherical pores under the action of surface tension. The integrated form of this equation yields a straight-line relation between log (1 - D) and t. Such conditions were found by Felten4 to be true only after extended periods of pressing. The work of D. J. McAdam, Jr.1,2 at the U. S. Naval Engineering Experiment Station, Annapolis, Md., on what has been called by him "corrosion-fatigue" has focussed the attention of the engineering profession in general, and of those interested especially in the study of corrosion in particular, on the importance of making tests which will indicate as nearly as possible what can be expected from a given material in service. Pitting is unquestionably the chief agent operating so tremendously to reduce fatigue limits, but in the light of previous work3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 it is fair to assume that absorbed hydrogen resulting from the action of the corroding medium upon steel may, under certain conditions, have a perceptible influence. The experiments described in this paper deal more precisely with stressless corrosion, or "prior-corrosion fatigue,"9 and have been carried out to test such an assumption, to segregate, if possible, the effect of pitting from that of absorbed hydrogen, and although very preliminary in nature they indicate results which are striking.

The town of Pacific, in Jefferson County, Mo., is 27 miles west of St. Louis. Since the area lies entirely on the flood plain of a cut-off meander of the Meramac River, it was considered a likely environment for accumulation of commercial quantities of sand and gravel. Excellent transportation facilities are afforded by two major railways to St. Louis, and ample water supply for washing and separation is assured by the proximity of the river. As a large washing and separation plant was planned, the property was evaluated in detail to justify the high initial expenditure. An intensive testing program using both geophysical and drilling methods was designed and carried out. The prospect was surveyed topographically and a 200-ft grid staked on which electrical resistivity depth profiles were observed at 130 points. The Wenner 4-electrode configuration and earth resistivity apparatus* were used. In all but a few cases, the electrode spacing, A, was increased in increments of 1% ft to a spread of 30 ft and in increments of 3 ft thereafter.

THE existence of isothermal martensite without the presence of the athermal form thus far has been established only in a 6 pct Mn, 0.6 pct C steel' and a 23 pct Ni, 3.5 pct Mn-Fe alloy.' " Theoretical calculations, moreover, predict this phenomenon to be observable only within narrow composition limits.' In all other steels, it is generally considered that martensite inevitably forms upon cooling below the M, temperature. Even the possibility of isothermal martensite transformation has been questioned for the common steels, although Averbach and Cohen" showed that martensite formation does not stop when the cooling is arrested and that as much as 5 pct retained austenite may transform isothermally to martensite at room temperature. This note presents some observations made on a number of low alloy steels by dilatometric and inductive measurement of isothermal austenite transformation at various temperatures close to the Ms. In the dilatometer studies reported previously, austenitized specimens were immersed in a salt bath maintained at proper temperature and immediately inserted into the dilatometera8' already at thermal equilibrium with the bath. The dilation was read on a dial gage divided into 0.001 mm intervals. Induction measurements were made with a separate excitation source and a test coil, sealed together in a salt-tight case. The increase in the induced voltage caused by the transformation products was recorded at a paper speed of 4 mm per sec. The steels studied are listed in Table I. Specimens prepared from steels 1 and 2 were in the form of hollow cylinders 60 mm long, 10 mm ID, 14 to 16 mm OD, while specimens of steels 3 and 4 were in the form of notched-bar impact test specimens, DVM type. Specimens of steel 5 were in the form of strip, 7x0.3 mm. In the bainitic range, curves representing the amount of transformation vs log time have a single step appearance, as is shown by the curve of isothermal transformation at 320°C in Fig. 1.Y ransformation proceeds in accordance with the Austin-Rickett equationo P -----------= k t" 100-P where P is the percentage of transformed austenite, t is time, and k and n are constants. Near the M, temperature, however, complex curves having two steps are observed. As shown in a previous papera for steel 3 isothermally transformed at 245"C, such complex curves can be separated into two separate transformations or reactions each following the Austin-Rickett equation. "For his vision, determination, dedication, and leadership in the conquest of the remote and rugged Ertsberg and the technical and human barriers to its development and for his lecture ..." It is a great honor for me to be included among the Jackling Award recipients, many of whom have been close friends and associates. My subject is the development of the Ertsberg, a copper mine located 4' south of the equator, 70 miles (113 km) from the south coast of Irian Jaya---the easternmost province of the republic of Indonesia at an elevation of 12,000 ft (3658 m) in an area which was inhabited by a few "stone age" people when I first arrived there in 1960. Persistence, tenacity, immagination and innovation were all required to bring the Ertsberg into production. The technical, financial and political problems that have been faced over the past 16 years were unique in many respects. I hope that my paper will give some encouragement and help to future developers of mines in difficult and inhospitable surroundings.

MORE than 2500 members of the AIME from all sections of the U. S., Canada, Central and South America are expected to attend the 175th General Meeting scheduled for Los Angeles Feb. 16 to 21, 1953. The Southern California Section will be host for the meeting. It will be the first time the Annual Meeting has been held in Los Angeles. In keeping with the historic nature of the event, headquarters will be the fabulous Statler Hotel, recently opened in downtown Los Angeles. Meeting plans are under the direction of Henry T. Mudd, General Chairman, assisted by members of the Southern California Section, headed by Basil P. Kantzer. The annual business meeting is scheduled to be held Tuesday, February 17, at the Statler Hotel, at 4 pm. Minerals Beneficiation Div. has planned a very important program, with 10 technical sessions, the famous Scotch Breakfast, divisional luncheon, and participation in the Mining Branch and All-Institute activities. The MBD business meeting is set for the morning of Feb. 16, 1953.

EXPERIMENTS of previous investigations have indicated that calcium-copper alloy, when used as a deoxidizer for molten copper, results in a sound copper casting of good physical and electrical properties. Bradenberg and Wiens1 have obtained successful results in casting sound copper using calcium for deoxidizing. Masing2 has obtained deoxidized copper of high density and high conductivity by use of calcium. Pratt,3 in 1907, patented the use of calcium for the deoxidation and degasification of, copper. Schumacher, Ellis and Eckel 4 in 1929, conducted a series of experiments on deoxidizing copper with calcium. They concluded that so long as there is only a small percentage of residual calcium the mechanical and electrical properties of the copper deoxidized are not impaired; and the deoxidation is thorough. For this investigation, a, copper-calcium alloy high in calcium and 10 variously deoxidized copper ingots were prepared. The investigation concerns itself with the casting properties and structure of these variously deoxidized ingots, their working and annealing characteristics, and the resulting physical and electrical properties of the worked materials.

B. H. Bergstrom (Allis-Chalmers Mfg. Co., Milwaukee)—In reading this article, it was difficult to follow through the example given as a starting point in the derivation of the theoretical equation which relates ball size to feed size. A discussion with F. C. Bond led to the following clarification: Bond postulates that "the breaking force exerted by a ball varies ... as the cube of its diameter . . ." and that the force in pounds per square inch required to break a particle varies ... as its diameter squared." He concludes: "It follows that when a l-in. ball breaks a 1-mm particle, a 2-in. ball will break a 4-mm particle, and a 3-in. ball a 9-mm particle." The above example can be true only for a different set of assumptions. Since the first assumption is apparently true, it is the second that must be revised. The second assumption should read that the breaking force required to break a particle varies as its diameter to the 3/2 power. This relationship was derived in the next paragraph of the article.

THE axis of the middle portion of the Ural mountains is made up chiefly of highly compressed igneous and sedimentary schists, considered of Devonian age by the Russian geologists, with large areas of serpentine (peridotite originally) gabbro, etc., intrusive in the schist series. In addition there are large areas of probably older granitic and gneissic .rocks. The nickel deposits referred to in this paper are found in the Devonian schists and their associated igneous rocks. The gabbro-peridotite intrusions probably took place in late Devonian or early Permian time, inasmuch as the Permian and Carboniferous beds lie at gentle angles on the Devonian series on the west slope of the Urals. Perhaps the first attempt to work a nickel deposit in the Urals was made about 1866 in the Revdinsk district, which is situated southwest of Ekaterinburg. I was informed by a Russian that a wet method of extracting the nickel was tried but was not a commercial success. This deposit has been described by Müller,1 Foullon,2 and Karpinski.3 Beck4 gives an abstract of these papers.

ON Coal's Horizon one development rises above all others. That is the swift expansion of output to make Soviet Russia the largest coal producer on earth next to the United States. Few Americans are aware of the speed and extent of that expansion nor of the accompanying creation of a strong, resourceful mining machinery industry, nor of the extent and character of the mechanization of Soviet coal mining. Two initial clarifications are necessary for better understanding. First, we must keep in mind the sharp distinction between the Russian people and the communist Soviet dictators who rule them. The great mass of the Russian people are not members of the Communist Party as people here are Republicans or Democrats. They are not permitted to be members. There are, by various estimates, only 2 to 4 million members of that party in all Soviet Russia. The other 196 to 198 million are the victims of their tyranny and their terror. It is the activity of the Soviet rulers that concerns us here.

IF all of the 14 million tons of kaolin produced in Georgia through 1949 had been mined from a single deposit 20 ft thick, it would represent a mined-out area of less than 1 sq mile. This measure of depletion is in such strong contrast with the large size of the area shown in Fig. 1, from which most of the output has come, that there has developed an optimistic outlook concerning future supplies of kaolin equal in grade to that already mined. Dozens of mines are widely but not evenly distributed within this area, which consists mostly of parts of Twiggs, Wilkinson, and Washington counties. There are scarcely half a dozen kaolin mines elsewhere in the state that have been appreciably productive, although the areas in which they occur may have good possibilities. Most of the efforts to find new deposits, therefore, will be confined to the area shown in Fig. 1, for it is here that the industry has established its facilities, and prospecting is encouraged by relatively numerous outcrops and opened deposits of kaolin.

RECENTLY spectrophotometry has been reported to provide a convenient technique for the rapid and reproducible determination of xanthate concentration in pulp solution 1,2 and for a kinetic study of xanthate decomposition in acid solutions." Since the application of this analytical technique is feasible for those compounds showing pronounced light absorption maxima in the near ultraviolet region, it was deemed advisable to investigate the absorption spectra of some of the organic compounds that are used in flotation. It is known empirically that certain groups of atoms in an organic compound cause characteristic light absorption in the ultraviolet and near ultraviolet range, and the wavelengths and intensities of the corresponding absorption maxima are relatively independent of the nature of the remainder of the compound. The characteristic values of such groups, which are known as chromophores, are given in the literature. 4,5 According to this information, many of the sulphydryl compounds are expected to show absorption maxima in the near or long wavelength ultraviolet region, whereas the saturated fatty acids and the saturated alkylamines do not.

HOSTS of friends will rejoice that T. A. Rickard has been given honorary membership in the Institute. It might well have been done long ago, since, when one reviews distinguished services rendered by individuals to our organization and our profession, it is at once apparent that his name ranks high and that he has merited this distinction for more than three decades. Our by-laws restrict this list to twenty names; "T.A." becomes the sixteenth living member. Young engineers should particularly be pleased; Mr. Rickard has had a career rich in human interest, and full of useful suggestions to the younger men; he has given them good advice and set them a notable example; he, more than anyone else, has shown them how technical writing can be clear and concise; he has inspired youngsters to do their best; he has been their friend. No one has more first-hand knowledge of these facts than the writer of this appreciation:
