Have Been In Operation At Douglas, Ariz., There Has Developed A Remarkable Condition In Regard To The Corrosive Action Of The Water Used To Cool The Jackets Of The Blast-Furnaces. Were It Not For The Many Contradictory Features, It Might Pass As One Of The Unavoidable Troubles Due To The Composition Of The Water. This Water, Obtained From Wells 600 Ft. Deep, Is Also Used In The Steam-Boilers, And Its Composition, As Shown By The Following Analysis, Does Not Indicate The Presence Of Any Ingredient Which Would Explain The Corrosion Grains Per U. S. Gal. Silica, 0.861 Iron Oxide And Alumina, 0.223 Calcium Carbonate, 0.2111 Calcium Sulphate, Magnesium Carbonate, Sodium And Potassium Sulphates, . 14.850 Sodium And Potassium Chlorides, 9.732 Sodium And Potassium Carbonate, 6.452 32.409 The Jackets Are Made Of Inner Plates 0.5 In. Thick And An Outer Plate I In. Thick, With 3-In. Stiffeners Between The Inner And Outer Plates. In From 10 To 12 Months The Inner Plates Have Been Reduced By Corrosion To A Thickness Of From 1/8 To 1/16 In., While The Outer Plate In The Same Time Is Reduced By Less Than 1/16 In., And The Stiffeners Show Very Little Corrosion. The Plates Are Pitted And Eaten Away In Some Places More Than In Others. There Is Practically No Scale Found On The Jackets, But When Cleaned Considerable Iron Oxide Is Found In The Bottoms. LONG before the Stone Age, when man first sought shelter where there-were no natural shelters, such as caves and clefts in the rock, he uprooted trees and planted them upside down so that the roots formed the roof. By selecting trees whose roots grew out in a horizontal direction and; by planting these trees close enough - together, a crude shelter was formed. He then took mud, formed a plaster and covered over the' roots. Later the walls were made by using sticks and twigs and plastering between them. It is natural then, that he wiped his muddy hands on- his own hairy body and soon found that the mud was difficult to remove when, dry. It is due, to this discovery that we mix animal hair in 'our modern plaster to increase its strength. The use of fibrous asbestos in some refractory cements has followed this same principle.

The rates of cementation of pd11 on electropolislzed copper cylinders were studied in aqueous perchloric acid solutions at pdII concentrations from 0.02 to 0.1 mM. The cylinders were rotated at various high speeds to reduce the diffusion layer to a minimum thickness. In 0.1 M HClO4 solutions, the cemented palladium is dense, adherent, and shiny. The rate data indicate that there are two stages in the deposition. In the initial stage, the rate of cementation is first order with respect to the pd11 concentration. The second stage is much slower. The first stage is consistent with rate control by the diffusion of pd11 ions to the copper surface, and/or chemical reaction at the surface, and the second stage is consistent with rate control by the diffusion of copper ions from the cop-per surface through the deposit of cemented palladium, out to the main body of solution. In 0.001 M HClO4 solution, only the first stage is evident and the rate is more rapid than at higher acidities. This rate enhancement is attributed to PdOH+ ions that predominate at low acidity and aye more reactive than unhydrolyzed pdII. The deposit is porous and loose. All of the cemented deposits are Pd-Cu alloys rather than pure palladium. Activation energies are 9.5 kcal per mole in 0.1 M HClO4 and 7.4 kcal per mole in 0.001 M HClO4. CEMENTATION or displacement reactions occur between aqueous solutions of metal salts and immersed metals according to the general equation: where M1 is electrochemically the more noble metal. Although these reactions find considerable application in metals recovery processes (e.g., the cementation of copper192 or gold3), in electrorefining processes (e.g., solution purification before electrolysis4,5), and in plating and metal finishing processes,6 few studies have been made of the kinetics of such reactions.7-9 The rates of cementation reactions will depend on one or more of the following factors: a) chemical reactions at the metal-solution interface; b) ionic transport to or away from the interface;'-' and c) the character and adherence of the cemented deposit on the substrate metal,6a,10 because the deposit will inhibit the rate of transport of dissolving ions (M2m+) into the solution. In this investigation, the kinetics of the early stages of cementation were studied to obtain an understanding of the reaction mechanism under conditions in which the deposit was sufficiently thin that its inhibiting effect could be disregarded. To achieve this, very dilute solutions in Mn+ were used. Cementation rates are often fast in the initial stages and transport-contr01led.9 To find conditions under which transport control would shift to chemical control, very high stirring velocities were used to minimize the diffusion-layer thickness. Of the many possible cementation reaction systems, the palladous perchlorate-copper system was chosen for this investigation because it was believed to involve simple ion-for-ion exchange. In addition, there are no interfering side reactions, such as the reduction of hydrogen ions, and anion effects are usually absent in perchlorate solutions. EXPERIMENTAL Materials. Reagent-grade chemicals and redistilled water were used in all experiments. Palladous perchlorate stock solutions (0.02 M) were prepared by dissolving 99.5 pct Pd sponge (Johnson Matthey and Mallory Ltd.) in concentrated nitric acid, adding concentrated perchloric acid, evaporating twice slowly (to prevent PdO precipitation) to a small volume, and diluting in a volumetric flask. To prevent gradual hydrolysis of PdII, the stock solutions were made 0.4 M in HC104. Tests for pdIV (Ref. 11) and C1- were negative. Copper strips were cut accurately from 0.025-in. electrolytic tough pitch sheet, Sample 1 (Mines Branch stock or Canadian Copper Refineries Ltd., Montreal), or from oxygen-free, high-conductivity sheet, Sample 2 (American Metal Climax O.F.H.C. brand, sold by Utility Brass and Copper Corp., Brooklyn). THE " Tar-Sands." is the name which has been given to the extensive horizontal deposit of fine Cretaceous sand, blackened by tarry petroleum, which forms the banks of the last or lowest 130 miles of the Athabasca river before it terminates in Athabasca lake. The Cretaceous strata, to which these sands belong, extend northwesterly from Dakota all the way to this lake and for 500 miles beyond it. The Athabasca river forms the uppermost section of the Athabasca-Mackenzie, one of the great rivers of the world. It rises on the Pacific side of the Rocky mountains, westward of Edmonton, and flows north of east to a point called Athabasca. Landing, 100 miles north of Edmonton, where it turns northward and runs about 280 miles before it falls into the west end of Athabasca lake. The section of this river-system which discharges the lake just named into Great Slave lake, is called Slave river, and below the latter lake it becomes the Mackenzie river. Along the section of 280 miles of the Athabasca river above mentioned, the Cretaceous strata consist of bluish-gray and drab-gray marls, on top, from Athabasca Landing to Drowned rapid, 110 miles down stream; then heavily bedded gray sandstones, 225 ft. in greatest thickness, underlying these, form the banks for about 40 miles further. The strata appear to be horizontal, but they really clip very slightly to the southward. At Drowned rapid, we see the first of the tar-sands resting on almost horizontal beds of bluish-gray limestone of Devonian age. In some places the limestone is associated with shaly or marly bands. Notwithstanding the great hiatus between the two series, the horizontal tar-sands lie conformably upon the almost level upper beds of the limestone wherever the two formations are seen together, all along the river, throughout a

THE need for improved mine communication to increase efficiency and to insure greater safety has long been recognized. General and unrestricted communication between all points underground, and between the surface and all points underground, is probably the least advanced phase of the mining industry. An ideal system of mine communication must require no fixed wire installations. The equipment must be small, lightweight, and readily portable, and the power requirements low. A system that can be used not only under normal circumstances but also in an emergency, when the continuity of wires, tracks, and pipelines may be disrupted, must function independently of any aid furnished by standard installations. Radio communication offers possibilities of meeting all the requirements necessary for an ideal communication system in underground mines. Transmission of signals must be achieved through one or both of two mediums, through the air in mine openings or through the strata. The results or lack of results obtained by early investigators showed conclusively that radio communication by space transmission cannot be accomplished effectively beyond line-of-sight distances in underground passageways. A radio system underground therefore must depend solely upon transmission through soil and strata. The application of radio to underground mine communication was investigated by many individuals and agencies at different times in the last several decades, but little success was achieved before World war 11.2-0, The results of experiments during the war, and further knowledge gained in experiments with vastly improved communication methods and equipment after the war provided the background for additional research in radio communication in underground mines. During 1950 to 1.952 the University of Minnesota sponsored an investigation to determine the possibility of developing: a system of radio communication universally applicable in underground metal mines in the Lake Superior district. The possibility of using radio equipment to determine the imminence of rock bursts in deep copper mines in that district also was investigated. The investigation supplemented previous and concurrent emergency mine communication studies of the U. S. Bureau of Mines. Testing equipment and laboratory facilities maintained by the Bureau of Mines at Duluth, Minnesota, were used in the research program, which was conducted as a mining engineering graduate research problem by the present writer under the direction of T. L. Joseph and E. P. Pfleider. The radio units used in the research program were designed and built to specification solely to conduct tests of radio communication in mines. Two identical units were used in all tests. Each unit contained a transmitter section, a receiver section, and a power-supply section, mounted on a single chassis. The entire unit was enclosed in a single 10x12x18-in. metal case provided with a leather-strap handle for carrying purposes. The front of the case was hinged to open upward and provide easy access to the single control panel on which all controls were mounted. Storage batteries supplied the operating power for all tests. Standard 6-v automobile batteries were utilized to provide adequate capacity to conduct tests for a full day without exhausting the battery. A frequency range from 30 to 200 kc was covered in eight pre-fixed steps on each unit. The carrier frequencies were crystal-controlled and amplitude-modulated. The receiver employed an essentially standard superheterodyne circuit and was sufficiently sensitive to detect signal strengths of 5 micro v. A heterodyne circuit was employed in the transmitter to obtain the low-carrier frequencies used in the units. Power output of the transmitter, usually less than 2 w, rarely exceeded 3 w in any test. Tests were conducted in mines on the Vermillion iron range in Minnesota, the Gogebic iron range in Wisconsin, the Menominee and Marquette iron ranges in Michigan, and a copper mine in the upper Michigan peninsula. All tests were conducted when the mines were operating normally, and usual mining, maintenance, and transportation activities were in progress, so that any interference caused by normal production activities could be evaluated during the tests. Tests were made between different points underground in each mine, and between underground and surface points at some mines. Test readings obtained at any one mine were calibrated in the laboratory before another series of tests were begun at the next mine. The transmitter and receiver were separated by one or more levels in each test, and generally there was no other means of communication between test points. Two 100-ft lengths of rubber-covered wire were used for antenna wires on each unit in both transmission and reception. The ends of the wires were connected to ground points in one of several methods, depending upon physical conditions at each test site. The wires were clipped to metal rods about 200 ft apart in the back, side, or bottom of the mine opening where the character of the rock permitted driving rods. Since 1964, the Dept. of Mining at The Pennsylvania State University has been carrying out extensive studies associated with the phenomena of microseismic activity and inelastic behavior in geologic materials. Briefly, the program to date has involved the following stages 1) Study of the microseismic noise and energy rates for selected geologic materials under incremental, uniaxial tension.1,2 2) Investigation of the frequency spectra of microseismic activity of selected geologic materials under incremental, uniaxial tension.3,4 3) Investigation of the time-dependent inelastic deformation of geologic materials and the analysis of such deformation in terms of mechanical models.5, 6 4) Simultaneous study of microseismic activity and time-dependent inelastic deformation in geologic materials under incremental, uniaxial compression.7,8 Details of the research involved in stage 4 of the program constitute the subject of this chapter. It should be noted that the majority of the experimental data quoted in this chapter forms part of a thesis to be presented by one of the authors (Kim) in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Ph.D. degree in mining engineering at The Pennsylvania State University. During the last two or three years, a number of important papers have been published which deal primarily with the fundamental structure and mechanical behavior of geologic materials. Recent papers 9,10 have provided research workers in the rock mechanics field with a meaningful overall picture of rock as a structural material. The concept that many

The habit planes for hydride precipitation in large grains of alpha zirconium and Zircaloy-4 were determined in specimens containing 161 and 136 ppm hydrogen, respectively. In zirconium, the hydride platelets precipitated on various pyramidal planes inclined to the basal plane at angles ranging from 10 to 50 deg and 75 to 90 deg. Hydrides were most frequent at inclinations of about 20 deg and 90 deg. In Zircaloy-4, hydride plates were inclined to the basal plane at angles vanging from 5 to 25 deg with the predominant inclinatioiz equal to 12 deg; no platelets were found near the prism plane position. In both zircoinium and Zir-caloy-4, hydrides were principally, but not exclusively, parallel to (1011) type planes. When the Zircaloy-4 gmins were subjected to tension stresses of 12,100 psi and 19,400 psi during hydride precipitation, the hydride habit was unchanged except that precipitation favored those habit planes which were inore nearly perpendicular to the stress direction. The stress-orientatioiz effect increased with the magnitude of the stress. THE hydride habit plane in a zirconium has been determined by several investigators. Langeron and Lehr1 in 1956 found platelets parallel to (1010) slip planes. In 1962, Westlake and Fisher2 confirmed these findings and showed that hydride precipitation on twin planes, as reported by Kunz and Bibb,3 was probably due to incomplete removal of worked metal from specimen surfaces. Secondary habit planes, ( 1011) and (1015), were also found by Westlake and Fisher under particular charging conditions where a hydride layer may have existed at the hydrogenation temperature. Most recently, walters4 and westlake5 again observed the (1010) habit exclusively in zirconium. Louthan and hgermans have reported that hydrides precipitate on various ( 101l ) and (112l) planes positioned 31.5 to 90 deg to the basal plane in Zircaloy-2. The present investigation was concerned with the hydride habit in Zircaloy-4 in relation to that in zirconium and the possible change in habit when precipitation occurs under stress. The latter consideration was prompted by the stress-orientation phenomenon originally reported by Marshall and Louthan.7, 8 I) EXPERIMENTAL Materials and Specimens. Chemical analyses of all materials are given in Table I. The zirconium specimen was a 1 by 4 in. section cut from wrought crystal bar that was hot-rolled at 790°C to 0.300 in. and cold-rolled to a final thickness of 0.095 in. All surfaces were mechanically polished and then chemically polished with a solution of H2O, HNO3, and HF (10:10:l by volume) prior to annealing. Grains as long as 0.25 in. were grown by thermally cycling the specimen three times (in 10-5 mm Hg vacuum) between 825" and 1000°C at approximately 125°C per hr. The Concrete Research Division, U.S. Corps of Engineers, has developed a simple procedure for determining the coefficients of linear thermal expansion of rocks by means of resistance wire (SR-4) strain gauges. Gauges are cemented to the surfaces of specimens, which are then brought alternately to temperatures of 35°F and 135°F. Results are accurate to the seventh decimal place.

One of the most unusual assignments in the his¬tory of Loffland Bros. Co. is now in progress with the drilling of a 72-in. diam. shaft in Nevada for the United States Atomic Energy Commission. Projected depth being 3200 ft, by volume, this is the same as a 216,672-ft hole 83/4 in. in diam. Every aspect of the operation is king-sized. The 15,000-lb bit moves into position over the well on a specially-made railroad car riding on rails 14 ft apart. The single drill collar weighs 300,000 lb, is 60 in. in diam., and 43 ft long. The drill pipe is 133/s-in. 72-in. N-80 casing fabricated with special tool joints. The bit chews up 1.05 cu yd of rock for every ft of penetration (This is equal to the volume of 67.71 ft of 83/4-in. hole.

A process for recovery of greater than 99% of the copper contained in acid leach solutions by sulfide precipitation using hydrogen sulfide as a hydrometallurgical reagent has been developed. The process incorporates the concept of hydrogen sulfide addition to recycled copper sulfide solids in a turbulent flow area where further precipitation or agglomeration occurs to increase the effective particle size of the copper sulfide precipitate. Because the recycled solids provide a larger number of particles upon which momentary excesses of hydrogen sulfide are absorbed, oversulfidization of the product is prevented. Copper sulfide precipitates produced in this manner in a laboratory test reactor showed greatly improved physical characteristics compared to copper sulfide precipitates obtained by conventional direct precipitation in which H2S is bubbled directly into acid leach liquor. Copper sulfide precipitates were evaluated and compared by use of filtration tests and settling rate studies. Electron microscopic examination of the solids confirmed the presence of larger particles in reactor-precipitated copper sulfide. Flotation was examined as an alternative to filtration for recovery of CuS precipitates and was found to achieve complete CuS removal without addition of collector or frothing reagents in a period of 2 min. In the same test reactor, a rapidly floatable CuS precipitate was also formed by mixing H2S with acid liquors used to leach crushed copper oxide-copper sulfide ore (LPF process). In the presence of gangue from the crushed ore, flotation of both natural and reactor-produced copper sulfides resulted in recovery of better than 90% of the copper contained in the crushed ore.

THE characteristics of alloyed anodes and their influence on the products of electrolysis and power consumption have been noted previously in the literature.1 This paper presents data in continuation of the subject given in an earlier paper by the authors.2 As noted in the authors' previous paper, the objectives of this work are the reduction in the cell voltage and the purity of the cathode product resulting from the use of alloyed lead anodes. The fundamental facts developed in the previous paper were: (1) that the presence of a small amount of calcium lowers the anode potential approximately 50 per cent. below that of pure lead; and (2) that thallium when present to the extent of 4 per cent. rendered the anode practically stable, thereby lowering the contamination of the cathode by lead to a very insignificant amount. The specific features determined in this recent work are as follows: 1. The lowest limit of calcium in the lead which will still give maximum lowering of the anode potential. 2. The characteristics of the thallium-calcium-lead anode. 3. The characteristics of the silver-calcium-lead anode. 4. The characteristics of the thallium-silver-calcium-lead anode. It was determined that 0.1 per cent. calcium in the anode was sufficient to lower the anode potential approximately 50 per cent. Table 1 shows the characteristics of alloyed anodes tested. The anode composed of 0.1 per cent. calcium, 4 per cent. thallium, and 95.9 per cent.

At the Director's dinner of the A.I.M.E. on. April 22, Mr. Sengier of the Union Minière du Haut Katanga was a guest. Though a member of the Institute for sev-eral years this was the first occasion on which he had had opportunity to meet with it, and in response to an invitation from President DeGolyer, after expressing his pleasure at being present, he told informally of the present development of the Congo with which he has been so closely related. From his remarks the follow-ing has been prepared.-EDITOR. AS you know, the Belgian Congo, a fairly large colony compared with the territory of Belgium, is in the center of Africa. Natural waterways, railroads now built and new railroads under construc-tion, give increasing means of transportation and are helping toward development. The mining industry is by far the most important part of our colonial activity. Considering that we are all engineers, I will confine my figures to mining enterprise. First I will show you the relative importance of the mining industry com-pared with the total exports of the Belgian Congo. During 1925 there was exported 100,000 tons of cop-per, valued at about $25,000,000; 900,000 carats of diamonds, 8000 lb. of gold, 1700 tons of cassiterite, 300 .tons of cobalt, and 20 grams of radium, of a total value of about $35,000,000. Other products to a value of about $12,000,000 and consisting mainly of palm nuts, palm oil, cotton, ivory, copal, rubber, were also exported. From this you will see that mineral products account for about 72 per cent of the total exported value. Copper alone amounts to 52 per cent of the total and 72 per cent of the mineral exports. All minerals, with the exception of gold, which is mined by the government, belong practically toy two mining companies in which American and British capi-tal is interested with Belgian. These two companies (one called Forminière, interested in the diamond busi-ness, and the other called the Union Minière, interested in copper, cobalt, tin and radium) were formed twenty-five years ago. They started producing in 1911, but the war prevented normal operations, and active de-velopment could only be carried on after the Armistice.

I have frequently stated that while the chemical composition of steel is important, yet even greater importance is connected with the mechanical and heat treatment of the metal. During the past year I encountered such a positive example of that fact that I deem it worth putting upon record. A prominent railway system divided an order for open-hearth steel rails between two steel works, both of which are under the control of the same corporation; giving to one about 18,000 tons, and to the other 7,500 tons of the same section and to be made under the same specifications. The rolling results obtained in the two mills varied so widely that a study of the figures is intensely interesting and serves to illustrate the advantages obtained by carefu1 ingot casting, and, quite as pertinently, the possible benefits of careful subsequent heating and rolling with moderate reductions in the rolling process. The smaller order was rolled complete in four installments during the same months that the larger order was being made in six separate installments; but, to permit of exact comparisons, the totals of the four installments (completing the order with the mill which I will call A) are given with the totals of the first four installments of the larger order, made by the mill designated as B. GEOGRAPHICALLY, North Carolina consists of three divisions, the coastal plain on the east, the piedmont plateau in the center, and the Appalachian mountain region on the west. Geologically, the State may be divided into two main divisions, an eastern or coastal plain region, and a western or piedmont plateau and mountain region. The eastern region is underlain with unconsolidated sands, clays, marls, and shell limestones varying in age from Cretaceous to Recent. The western region is, in general, underlain with gneisses, schists, slates, sheared volcanics, and igneous intrusives of Pre-Cambrian age. In the mountain and upper piedmont portion of the western region are several areas of irregularly metamorphosed sediments of early Paleozoic age. Throughout the piedmont plateau and a part of the mountain portion of the western region, important areas are underlain with igneous intrusives of late Carboniferous age. Along the eastern edge of the piedmont plateau are two narrow belts, trending northeast-southwest, underlain with sediments of upper Triassic age. Although North Carolina contains a

PROGRESS on the earth depends to a large extent upon the rapid inter-change of ideas and commodities between the various nations of the world. The smooth flow of commerce, by which these ideas and com-modities move, is accelerated by accurate and complete maps of the various land and water areas of the earth, The production of accurate maps depends upon a complete knowledge of the figure and dimensions of the object to be charted, therefore a knowledge of the shape of the earth is a prime necessity for accurate charting purposes. Gravity observa-tions were first undertaken to aid in determining the shape of the earth so that the geodetic surveys of its land and water areas might be more accurately connected to form an undistorted map. A large part of the earth's surface is water and it is therefore necessary to get gravity values at sea as well as on land before a complete and accurate figure of the earth can be determined. Dr. F. A. Vening Meinesz, of Holland, was the first scientist to perfect a pendulum instrument that would accurately measure gravity at sea. He had previously developed a multiple pendulum apparatus for measur-ing gravity upon swampy and unstable land areas in Holland and it was therefore quite natural that he should adapt the instrument to give accurate results upon a still more unstable support, the surface of the sea. His instrument as perfected gives satisfactory results when mounted in gimbals on any vessel where the roll and pitch are not more than about 5° and where the vibrations from rotating machinery and wave action are not large enough to cause the pendulums to shift on the knife-edges. This degree of stability can be obtained on surface craft only in protected waters or on very calm days. Therefore, Dr. Meinesz mounted his instrument in a. submarine so that he could submerge below the disturbed surface waters and get the desired stability in nearly any kind of weather by simply diving to greater depths. Most of the gravity-at-sea work has been done with a Meinesz instrument and a very large number of the observations have been made by Dr. Meinesz himself. KINETICS of the reaction of zirconium with pure oxygen at elevated temperatures have been studied by several workers for periods of time up to 6 hr.1-1 In two cases,3-4 . the experimental values of oxygen uptake, w, as a function of time, t, were best fitted to the parabolic rate law w2 = kPt + constant. In others,3,4 the cubic rate law w3 = kot + constant, showed better agreement. The most recent data of Gulbransen and Andrew4 indicate that the choice between the parabolic and cubic laws for empirical representation of the data will often be arbitrary. This is particularly true if the first few minutes of the reaction with a clean zirconium surface is attributed to a different oxidation mechanism, for deviations from either rate law were found primarily during the initial period. Thus, the kinetics of this reaction have been too uncertain to permit safe extrapolation to oxidation periods of practical interest (many hundreds of hours). The data to be described are of interest, for they indicate that the cubic rate law applies over long oxidation times. The reaction of zirconium with oxygen at 1 atm pressure was followed at 350" and 450°C for 500 and 200 hr, respectively. Abraded test specimens of pure zirconium sheet' 3.0 X 2.0 X 0.012 cm in size were oxidized by the procedure previously described,3 which included periodic cooling to room temperature for weighing. The surfaces were polished to a 4/0 finish using polishing paper wet with kerosene, then wiped with petroleum ether and washed in redistilled acetone. Fig. 1 shows plots of log ? vs log t. Each curve represents the average of duplicate measurements, and deviations from the average were generally less than 3 pet. The cubic rate law (slope = 1/3) is closely followed. The rate constants, 5.2, x 10 -6 and 2.4, X 10- (mg cm-2)3 per hr at 350" and 450 oC, respectively, are plotted as log k, vs 1/T in Fig. 2, together with cubic constants calculated from the data of Gulbransen and Andrew4 for abraded specimens from the same lot of zirconium. Their data refer to runs of 6-hr duration at a pressure of 0.1 atm 0 and under conditions of uninterrupted heating. In spite of these differences, the latter data yield a straight line which appears to apply equally well to the new extended time data. The energy of activation for the oxidation process, calculated from the slope of this line, i.s 38 keal per mole. This may be compared with the value of 47 keal per mole found by Belle and Mallett3 at higher temperatures. It may be concluded tentatively that extrapolation of short-term oxidation data for zirconium to obtain the long-term behavior is best done through the cubic equation ?3 = kpt + constant. EVENTS during and since the war indicate that the nations of the world are trying to initiate an era of international co-operation. Definitions and objectives include social, economic, and human considerations no less than political considerations. The mineral resources of the world and the absolute and relative position of each nation enter into this situation. The possible use of armed might, the application of sanctions, the international flow of commerce, the ways in which this flow may encourage or hamper international well-being, and the influence of international and domestic well-being upon one another are all matters that must take mineral resources into account. If the United States is to act wisely and forthrightly in such matters we must be thoroughly informed as to our position with respect to mineral resources. What is the mineral position of the United States? A variety of widely conflicting opinions are held in authoritative and intelligent quarters: (1) For practical purposes our mineral resources are already exhausted.

Lead concentrates from Kuroko (black ore) mines, which contain 4-7% Cu, 55% Pb, 3-777, Zn, and 0.5-0.9% As, are pretreated by a hydrometallurgical process before electric furnace smelting with other lead resources from Kuroko. The hydrometallurgical pretreatment involves sulfuric acid leaching in the first stage and ferric leaching in the second stage. This paper describes the short history of lead recovery from Kuroko and the performance of laboratory tests and pilot plant and commercial operations.
