Abstract-Changes in the pore structure of hematite pellets during reduction to iron were investigated under a variety of experimental conditions. Pore structures were determined by a mercury penetration technique. The reduction temperature was found to be the major influence on structure, the pore system being bimodal below 750°C and unimodal above 900°C. Pore sizes ranging from 0.04 to 20 [um] were observed in completely metallized pellets produced over the temperature range 650-1050°C. Gas composition and reduction rates also influenced the pore structure of the metallized pellets, although to a lesser extent than the reduction temperature. An apparent activation energy of 24 kcal/mole was derived for the pore formation ptocess.

Thermal conductivity measurements of intact rock specimens do not reflect the effects of natural rock discontinuities, and large scale insitu tests are location specific and costly. To allow extrapolation of laboratory measurements to rock masses with discontinuities, the effects of discontinuities on rock thermal conductivity were measured using divided-bar techniques. The introduced discontinuities lowered the thermal conductivity in all cases, and conductivity decreased systematically with increasing roughness of the discontinuity. Conductivity increased with increasing pressure on the discontinuity.

The Youghiogheny and Ohio Coal Company expanded computer usage in the areas of engineering and production analyses by establishing a time-share terminal with Ohio University. Through the use of a graduate student on a consulting basis this relationship has enabled the company to gain computer programming capabilities in the scientific languages such as FORTRAN IV. The engineering function has benefitted from programs which dealt with mine power distribution and geostatistical analysis. Additionally, the University has modified a group of simulation programs developed by Virginia Polytechnic Institute so they are interactive enabling data entry from the remote terminal.

To obtain a negative determination for prime farmlands in its approved lignite surface mine permit application, Phillips Coal Co. conducted a soils mapping effort and a historic land use survey. In addressing the justification for topsoil substitute materials, the company relied on results of a geochemical evaluation to demonstrate improved drainage, trafficability, and fertility. It also relied on results of field test plots. Post-mining land use was determined through the use of overlay maps considering existing land use, vegetation, and historic prime farmland. The reclamation plan incorporated these elements plus indicator species, existing vegetation, and wildlife needs.

Discussion of the paper of M. E. Lormbardi,. presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 9S, February, 1915, pp. 209 to 215. I. N. KNAPP, Ardmore, Pa.-Some years ago I made a swinging spider to carry a string of casing in a way somewhat similar to that described in this paper. The ground I tried it in was too soft for its successful operation. The spider had a central one-flange bushing to carry the slips. Under this flange and on top of the spider was a properly protected ball runway, or ball bearing, which permitted rotating the casing when it was in place and supported by the slips.

Several months ago, some specimens of the minerals occurring at the Etta tin mine, Dakota, were received at the laboratory of the Cornell University. On examining the heavy brownish-black portion, which I presumed was the tin-stone, I was surprised to find only a faint indication of tin. Further investigation showed the mineral to be tantalite. On searching carefully all the fragments received, a considerable quantity of that mineral was found, and only a single streak of cassiterite, which was attached to a mass of spodumene. I was this morning an interested listener to the remarks of Mr. Ashbel Welch in regard to his designing a new section for steel rails, in 1866; and for the salze of the truth of history, and in order t:, give the credit to an American (and where it rightfully belongs) of higning the first section for steel rails, which was intelligently adapted to that material; I beg to state the following facts: On the 14th of August, 1866, Mr. Ashbel Welch gave me an order for 200 tons of steel rails, to be made bbr the Camden and Amboy Railroad, from a section designed by him. Five factors are required for the formation of uranium deposits: a source, transporting medium, host, trap, and preservation. Locating and evaluating uranium deposits requires ail integration of methods and techniques to determine if the above factors are present. A typical exploration program consists of selection of a favorable area, field reconnaissance, land acquisition, and target definition and evaluation. Target definition and evaluation utilizes a combination of geologic mapping, geochemical surveying, geophysical surveying, and drilling and logging. Each overlaps the others to some degree.

These districts are limited approximately on the north by the railroad from Salisbury to Ashville, and comprises the counties of Alexander, Catawba, Burke, Rutherford, McDowell, Cleveland, Lincoln, Polk and Henderson in North Carolina, and Greenville, Spartanburg, Union and York in South Carolina. The occurrence of monazite at Amelia Court House, in Virginia, belongs evidently to the same geological system, as its distance from the Alleghenies corresponds with that of the above-mentioned districts, and all the stratification runs parallel with those mountains.

The results of a preliminary investigation undertaken to explore the possibility of treating potential in sulfide mineral flotation systems as an external variable are reported in this note. Two different methods were used to assess floatability. One involved measurement of contact angles at a mineral electrode in reagent solutions, and the other involved direct measurement of flotation recoveries in a Hallimond tube flotation cell that had been modified such that mineral particles were in electrical contact with a gold electrode. Fairly good correlation between the contact angles and flotation recoveries has been obtained.
