In discussion of Mr. Macdonald's paper, I can say little more thau to add t~ the general acknowledgments of iguorae, and like several of the gentlemen who have preceded me, make one of those confessions which are thought to be good for the soul. Having had some experience in the erection of bridges during past years, I am aware that We yet need much information in order to proportion them to the best advantage. I would more especially like to emphasize three of the points mentioned by Mr. Macdonald, as among those upon which we lack knowledge; these are: first, the behavior of steel; second, the proportions of compression members; and, third, the influence of the size of a bar upon its strength per square inch. First, as to steel. While we all acknowledge this as the material of the future, our position map be said to be still one of expectaucy. Feu? engineers are bold enough to employ it largely in bridges, and those who do, find such serious difficulties in obtaining uniform grades of it, are so puzzled by apparent anomalies and unexpected phenomena, that it requires considerable faith and courage to apply it in large structural masses. DURING the course of preparation of crystals of alpha brass for an investigation of their creep characteristics, a number of critically oriented crystals were produced. In each of these specimens, P0, the specimen axis, lay near some important crystallographic direction or on or near the border of two possible slip systems. Because of the unusual nature of their orientations, it was considered of interest to deform these speci-mens in simple tension and to study orientation changes and any unusual occurrences, different from what would be expected for specimens in which only one slip system had distinctly the highest maximum resolved shear stress. Choice of actual operating slip system in a crystal offering an immedi-ate possibility of two slip systems would be expected to be due to chance, defect, or some inhomogeneity. Even in an ideally perfect crystal so oriented, the natural oscillations of the atoms about their lattice positions would give rise to a condition wherein one slip system would be favored over the other at the critical shear stress. In the large, nonperfect crystals of the present investigation, slip on both systems, but in different portions of the specimen, might occasionally be expected.

Field studies were conducted over a longwall coal mining operation to investigate the feasibility of using microseismic techniques to detect and to locate any areas of instability in the vicinity of the longwall. An array of geophones buried at depths of 3 to 8 m from surface were positioned approximately 130 m above the active area of the longwall panel. A mobile microseismic monitoring facility amplified, filtered, and recorded the microseismic activity sensed by the geophones. Microseismic events were detected at depths of at least 130 m and at horizontal distances in excess of 250 m from the source. Most events, which resembled decaying sinusoidal transients, had frequencies of 10 to 100 Hz, and particle velocities of 1 to 8 pm/s. Source locations for the 150 largest events were computed using a least-square travel-time-difference method. Both isotropic and unique wave propagation velocity models were considered when evaluating the source locations. Most of the events were computed to be within ± 30 m vertically of the coal seam and ± 15 m horizontally of the longwall face, when the unique velocity model was employed.

A programme of work was initiated so that the possibility for the agglomeration of Transvaal chromite-fines by pelletization could be investigated. The use of cementitious binders did not yield promising results, binder additions of up to 10 per cent failing to produce an agglomerate that would be suitable as feed for an electric-smelting furnace. Further laboratory and pilot-plant studies showed that high-quality pellets could be made from chromite bonded with small amounts of bentonite and hardened by heat treatment at temperatures of the order of 1000°C. An investigation was also done into the reduction behaviour of pellets containing amounts of stoichiometric carbon up to that required for complete reduction. The results showed that the maximum degree of reduction that could be obtained was approximately 75 per cent, and that these pellets had the physical properties that would make them amenable to smelting in a submerged-arc electric-smelting furnace.

GENERAL INTRODUCTION To paraphrase comments made by Black and Hoek(1) on the status of rock mechanics, the general methods of applied science related to rock mechanics are: a. Observe the phenomena of nature as they occur and, wherever possible, quantify the observations. b. Propound a model or theory to explain the phenomena observed. c. Test and develop the theory by further experimentation in the laboratory and in the field. d. Use the theory developed to predict behavior in similar or extended circumstances. e. Insure by measured experiment and observation that the predictions made are valid, or that deviations from the predicted behavior can be accounted for. f. Modify the theory and practice as necessary, and continue the process until more general laws can be formulated and applied, with a useful degree of confidence, to practical problems. This paper will present an infant concept. It will, in fact, propound a possibly useful theory to help explain commonly observed phenomena. It will test and develop the theory for a material similar in nature to some rocks. It will be used to predict behavior in the extended circumstances of a

WITH all the advantages of handling bulk materials by means of belt conveyor also go some problems, one of the most persistent being that of cleaning. When sticky materials are being carried; the build-up of material on the return idler rolls results in difficulty of belt training. Much attention has been given to the problem of cleaning conveyor belts, and a great variety of cleaning devices have been developed. Even the best involve troublesome maintenance, and none can completely remove the fine particles imbedded in the belt cover, which cause rapid wear of the return idler rolls, and at the same time, of the belt cover as well.

SYNOPSIS It can be shown that the properties of intact rock are relatively unimportant in rock slope stability and that failures are controlled by structural discontinuities such as bedding planes, joints and faults in the rock mass. The frequency, orientation and inclination of these discontinuities as well as their strength characteristics are important factors to be considered in any rock slope analysis and their influence will be demonstrated by means of a number of practical examples. Methods for determining the mechanical properties of discontinuities will be reviewed and the interpretation of the strength test results for use in stability computations will be discussed.

The presence of calcium ion in iron ore pulps that are upgraded by selective desliming can result in indiscriminate flocculation of both iron oxide and siliceous gangue slimes. In order to overcome this adverse effect, deflocculation by three complexing agents, namely ethylenediaminetetzaacetate (EDTA), sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP), and sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP), was investigated. The precipitates and complexes of these agents with calcium ion were characterized by potentiometric and conductometric titrations, and the surface properties of quartz and goethite were studied in the presence of calcium ion and of the complexing agents by means of streaming potential measurements and flotation tests. The results were then correlated with selective flocculation tests on an artificial mixture of quartz and goethite. EDTA markedly improved the selectivity of flocculation when added in near stoichiometric amounts, whereas STPP was less effective and SHMP was totally ineffective due to strong, indiscriminate dispersion. Remanent calcium polyphosphates on the goethite surface interfered with the adsorption of starch flocculant.

FOR a high-purity iron-carbon alloy, the phases existing at equilibrium at temperatures slightly above the temperature of the metastable eutectoid are austenite and cementite (hyper-eutectoid) or austenite and ferrite (hypo-eutectoid) and those below the eutectoid temperature (carbdn content > 0.02 pct) are ferrite and cementite. Such an alloy, held in a carefully controlled and measured temperature gradient (about 1 cm per deg) which includes the eutectoid temperature, then quenched and examined metallographicall.y, provides a precise measure of the eutectoid temperature. The samples were hollow cylinders approximately 1.3 cm OD, 0.63 cm ID, and 2.5 cm long, which had been carburized to the desired carbon content at 1000°C with an appropriate hydrogen-methane mixture. In order to cool the samples to room temperature with a minimum change of carbon content and absence of cracks they were quenched in a Cerro Bend bath at 480°C, followed by a water quench to room temperature. Three cylinders were suspended in the furnace1 in a purified helium atmosphere, by a closed end, thin wall, silica tube which also served as a thermocouple well. The top and bottom cylinders served only as a means of making the temperature gradient along the center cylinder more uniform. The temperature was determined with a platinum-platinrhodium thermel calibrated by comparison with a thermel certified (* 0.5OC) by the National Bureau of Standards. In a proposal submitted by Fenix & Scisson International, Inc., of Tulsa, Okla., conversion of an abandoned mine for underground storage of crude oil proved to be all effective storage technique. The conversion was done on an abandoned coal mine for S. F. F. Association, an agent of the South African Government, Johannesburg, South Africa. The mine was found to be structurally stable and appeared capable of retaining this stability over a long period. Surrounding formations were relatively free of fractures and were found to have low permeability. Slight problems appeared in the hydrostatic test, but were quickly stabilized. Additional information was positive, and conversion and filling were completed in 1969. Total puchasing, testing, and coverting cost was less than $0.20 per barrel of oil stored or 15% of conventional steel tank cost. Operating and maintenance costs are about 2% of those at two large tank farms owned and operated by the Association.

THE possible oil territory of Alabama can be readily divided into two regions, the Paleozoic area of the north, and the Coastal Plain province of Cretaceous and younger formations lying to the south. This latter area has received much attention in the last few years and has been described by a number of writers.1 Although the possibilities of the Cretaceous series have been much emphasized by recent writers, the fact remains that the two or, possibly, three localities where oil or as have been found in, anything like paying quantities are confined o the area of Carboniferous rocks. Moreover, almost all of the oil seeps and a good percentage of the gas seeps are confined to this area .2 Topographically, as well as structurally, the Paleozoic area can be divided into three rather well defined provinces: (1) The broad, open Coosa Valley lying adjacent to the crystalline oldland, with comparatively little relief, except for occasional longitudinal ridges and rather intense folding; (2) the plateau region of horizontal or gently warped Pennsylvanian strata broken by occasional anticlinal valleys aligned northeast and southwest, outliers of the Coosa Valley proper, in which

FOREWORD-In an interview published in the May 1975 issue of MINING ENGINEERING, one of the world's most respected scientists, nuclear physicist Hans Bethe discussed the reliability of nuclear power plants and their unmatched safety record. The Nobel laureate also refuted the anti-nuclear lobby's claims that nuclear plants emit harmful radioactive effluents. When asked whether the US has sufficient uranium resources, Dr. Bethe replied that "it depends on the time of introduction of the commercial and advanced breeder reactors which, in effect, can generate more nuclear fuel than they consume." The United States has enough U3O8 to last until the breeders can take over in 1995, said Dr. Bethe. But lie warned that extensive environmental damage would be caused if "environmentalists" succeed in delaying the development of the breeder. Any such delays, he noted, would vastly increase the demand for U3O8 in conventional reactors; this, in turn, would impose an immense burden on the US uranium mining industry, which would then have no alternative but to mine the low-grade Chattanooga deposits.

Three porphyry copper districts in southern Arizona are partly overlain by post-ore fanglomerates with certain physical and petrologic characteristics which define a distinct and significant class of rock. These units are the Locomotive fanglomerate at Ajo, the Helmet fanglomerate at Twin Buttes-Mission-Pima, and the Cloudburst formation at San Manuel- Kalamazoo, herein termed “Locomotive-type fanglomerates.” Post-ore units at Poston Butte and Lakeshore, Ariz., and Sar Chesmeh, Iran, also appear to fit this class. Locomotive-type fanglomerates may be genetically related to porphyry copper deposits as subsequent products of differentiation, volcanism, uplift, and sedimentation in short-lived basins of limited areal extent. These units are sufficiently distinct to be utilized as exploration guides for porphyry copper deposits in the Southwestern U.S., northern Mexico, and elsewhere.

At the last meeting of the Institute, Mr. Per Larsson read a very interesting paper on the Chapin mine of Michigan, in which he described the systems of mining that had, at different times, been tried in that great ore-body, and especially the system now in use, which consists in working the ore out from the bottom upward in lifts. Shortly after that paper was written, but before it had been published, or that I had had an opportunity of reading it, I bad the pleasure of visiting the mine. INTRODUCTION Rock bolts are a major means of support in underground coal mines in the United States. However, two of the most crucial problems facing the mining engineer today are that of finding a well defined and standard method for testing the anchoring ability of rock bolts, and of selecting the most suitable type of rock bolt and bolting pattern for a particular mine or specific mine section (Anon., 1982). Such selection requires not only an understanding of the behavior of the rock mass and the rock-bolt unit itself, but also a knowledge of the basic mechanisms by which rock bolts provide support while they interact with the rock mass during various field loading conditions. A recent study in this area has shown the inadequacy of present methods used in selecting and testing of rock bolts and the lack of clearly defined guidelines for safe and economical design of bolting patterns (Bieniawski, et al., 1980). The present paper describes a research study aimed at developing laboratory instrumentation and associated techniques for the evaluation of bolt-rock interaction. The instrumentation system developed, procedures followed during various experiments, and typical results from a series of studies carried out on mechanical bolts are presented. FOREWORD-Back in October of last year, I approached three of the largest commercial banks in the country to solicit an article about the role of commercial banks in mine financing. "We'll be delighted to cooperate with you in any way we can," was the stock response. As the September 1975 deadline approached, however, every bank officer I had contacted almost a year earlier informed me that he couldn't write such an article be- cause of "prior commitments," "an excessive workload," or "vacation schedule," etc. This was not a total surprise. Any commercial banker will be truly delighted in talking with you, if you have a good mining prospect, a good reputation, a good batting average in your business-and if he has the capital you want to borrow. But what happens when banks themselves are illiquid? Much as they would like to help you, they simply can't. And most of them clam up.
