This paper will discuss a US Bureau of Mines project designed to assess and predict the impacts which surface coal mining will have on the regional shallow groundwater system in the Powder River Basin. The primary objective will be met through the accomplishment of the following: (1) The design and establishment of a regional network for monitoring shallow groundwater systems in the basin; (2) monitoring the direction and rate of flow, water quality, and aquifer characteristics of the shallow groundwater systems; and (3) development of a regional groundwater simulation model, with appurtenant subroutines to determine local effects.

Vibration and air blast noise from blasting were evaluated during a research program sponsored by the US Bureau of Mines. Blast variables were studied wing small scale model (SCM) tests to evaluate specific variables as well as interactive effects, followed by experiments with production blasts at the surface coal mines. Experimental data showed that the primary variables affecting the ground vibration amplitude are the charge weight per delay and the length of delay interval. Blast variables having a significant effect on the overpressure amplitude include the charge weight per delay, the length of delay, burden and spacing, stemming amount and type, direction of initiation, charge depth, and amount of detonating cord and cover.

The publication of the report by Mr. F. L. Ransome1 was welcomed by many engineers who had mined in the heart of the San Juan country, braved its long and snowy winters, climbed its lofty peaks, run the gauntlet of its snow-slides, and studied its problems of geology, while making dividends for their English or American clients. This report helps one to understand why the bonanzas occurred, and why the inevitable " borrasca " presents itself where least expected. The Climax mine has a history of dealing with ground control problems caused by major stress concentrations in the orebody. These stress concentrations, called weight, can arise in a variety of ways. The general effects of depth, rock type, and mining method give rise to weight problems, but local geologic features and daily cave line management can have even greater effects. Over the years a number of techniques have been developed for identifying weight problems in advance and for cow with them. These techniques all help us to amid interrupting the pace of cave advance and minimize the loss of production.

In a paper recently read before the Institute by Mr. W. A. Goodyear, a useful presentation was made of the subject of the production of' water-gas on a large scale, by the use of a regenerative form of apparatus. By way of supplement to that paper, a brief statement of the details of a plan which was carried out at the works of the Elgin National Watch Company at Elgin, Ill., may be of interest, 'although the ultimate result of the working of the producer was not successful or satisfactory. This company had decided to build a gas-works for the supply of illuminating gas to their factory, on a much larger scale than that of the petroleum-works which had very successfully supplied the smaller buildings for many years, and in March, 1882, the material for a gas-making cupola furnace was purchased. The Mine Planning System consists of two parts: 1. A Sales Forecast (Sales Planning) 2. A Production Planning. The mathematical methods of the sales forecast are the exponential smoothing and a method with Markov-Chains. By these methods the quantity of material (ore, coal) will be calculated for the time planned. These quantities constitute the points in the production-planning. In the production-planning , special kinds of networks are used for calculating the resources-equipment required, labor and costs. A special routine optimizes the sequence of the mining areas within the mine on the basis of the lowest costs. The resources can be limited. The activities will be shifted when the demand exceeds this limit. The basis of the production-planning are computer files, in which the geological data and economical evaluations are stored.

Because of U.S. Forest Service regulations and the consequent cost of leaving several diamond drill holes open at the same time, it was necessary to develop an electrical method that could be used in one hole at a time to extend known mineralization. This was achieved by balancing the surface current electrodes so that the two potential electrodes in the hole being surveyed were in the same equipotential surface. This condition eliminated stratigraphic response but enhanced any asymmetry due to ore between the hole and either current electrode. This method was successfully used in mineralized holes at West Fork, Reynolds County, Mo., to show the direction in which to extend the drilling into areas of better mineralization.

Equilibrium in Lead Smelting. By S FREDERICK RAVITZ AND KENNETH E FISHER (Tech Pub 681, also Trans , vol 121 2300 words) Four liquids are ordinarily produced in lead smelting, namely, bullion, speiss, matte and slag To determine whether these exist together in equilibrium, the distribution of gold and silver among them was measured To crucibles containing similar mixtures of all four products, varying amounts of silver were added, and the crucibles were heated together under the same conditions for 3 hr, during which the charges melted and separated into four layers After cooling, these layers were assayed for silver, and the distribution coefficients, 1 e , the ratios of the concentration of silver in any particular layer to that in the bullion, were calculated In each experiment, each distribution coefficient was found to be constant, regardless of the amount of silver used Similar results were obtained using gold instead of silver The constancy of the distribution coefficients indicates that the bullion, speiss, matte, and slag exist together in equilibrium

COLCOCK JONES A meeting of the Southern California Local Section, in honor of the presence of Secretary Bradley Stoughton, was held at luncheon in a private dining room of the Sierra Madre Club on Friday, May 21, 1915, 27 members and guests being present. In the absence, through illness, of the Chairman, Dr. Comstock, the vice-Chairman, Seeley W. Mudd, presided. After the luncheon, Secretary Stoughton made a short address on the activities of the Institute. George S. Rice, of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, who was present, then spoke on the activities of his Bureau. Local Secretary F. J. H. Merrill gave a description of the activities of the Southern California Section and its progress, and reported the latter as substantial and its condition as very good. After shotcrete had been in use for a short time al the Climax Mine of the Climax Molybdenum Co., Climax, Colo., it was noted that regular longhole undercutting blasts would severely damage or detach slusher drift shotcrete linings. If this were to be a usual occurrence, the widespread application of shotcrete would have to be reexamined or abandoned. Concrete drift linings are affected less by blasting because of occasional significant gaps between the placed concrete and rock and the greater thickness of poured-in-place linings. Research Project Organized A research project was organized to determine: 1) the seriousness of the problem, 2) more complete in-use shotcrete strength data, and 3) possible solutions.

MILITARY necessities and economic scarcities, occasioned by the first and second World Wars, led to the search for substitute materials and new products to meet the demands of advancing technology accelerated by research development. Among others, lithium came to attention. Its chemistry had been studied for a long period, but its general use was quite restricted due to limited known sources of raw material. In World War I, Germany used lithium metallurgically for two principal purposes: 1-hardened lead alloy, B-Metal, for railway bearings as a substitute for lead-tin-antimony alloys; and 2-light strong aluminum alloys, Scleron, in which zinc was largely substituted for copper.

Thirteen Directors, the Secretary, and seven guests were present. The formation of a Philadelphia. Section was discussed. The proposed rules for admission of additional societies to membership in Engineering Council were approved. An invitation was extended to the American Institute of Metals to become affiliated with the Institute upon the general terms proposed in the report of the Joint Conference Committee of the American Institute of Metals and the American Institute of Mining Engineers. The request of the Iron and. Steel Committee to hold a meeting in Milwaukee during the week of Oct. 7, 1918, was granted. The reports of the Treasurer and Finance Committee were accepted. A change in the By-laws was proposed. Thirty Members, two Associates, and four Junior Members were elected. The status of two Junior Members was changed to Member. The resignations of seven members were accepted. The clues of two members who are on active duty at the front were remitted. One member was reinstated to membership.

An examination of the neutron capture gamma ray method using a 252CF neutron source indicates that this technique may be feasible for process stream analysis of ores. Simulated laboratory experiments were made on iron in taconite and magnetite, and copper and nickel in their respective ores. Satisfactory analyses were obtained for 500-1000-g samples in a combined irradiation and counting time of 100 min. For large industrial size samples this time could be shortened. Based on these experiments, a set of guidelines are given for the use of the neutron capture gamma method in an industrial mill.

THE mining and removal of coal from two or more beds, either simultaneously or consecutively, in vertically adjacent areas have always been matters of concern to mine operators from both operating and recovery points of view. However, with the progressive introduction and use of electrical and mechanical facilities, such problems assume even greater proportions. In this paper typical cases occuring in Cambia County, Pa., are given and procedures whereby such problems may be greatly reduced, if not entirely eliminated, are suggested.
