The first session of the Institute was held at the Smithsonian Institution, on Tuesday evening, February 22d. The members were welcomed to Washington and to the Smithsonian by Prof. Joseph Henry. President Holley responded to the cordial welcome of Professor Henry, and then read an introductory address on the subject of Technical Education. The kinetics of dissolution of metallic copper in aqueous cupric ammonium carbonate solutions were investigated. The major variables studied were temperature, agitation, and the cupric, cuprous, ammonia and carbonate concentrations. The rates of copper dissolution from rotating discs were determined by measuring the weight loss. The dissolution rate increased with the square root of the disc rpm and doubled when the temperature was increased from 20°c to 40°C.

Significant resources grading less than about 1% nickel occur in magmatic sulfide deposits of two types. In the Mt. Keith type, extensive zones of disseminated nickel sulfides occur in the central portions of certain synvolcanic dunite-peridotite sills of komatiitic affinity in Archean greenstone terranes. In the Duluth type, disseminated copper-nickel sulfides occur near the basal margins of intrusions of flood basaltic affinity associated with intracontinental rifring. In both types, the parent magmas became saturated with sulfide following the onset of fractional crystallization and the separation of the immiscible sulfide melt was accompanied by the precipitation of a relatively large proportion of silicates. The abundant silicate crystals impeded the coalescense and accumulation of the sulfide droplets with the resulting formation of large but low grade deposits.

Solution Mining or In Situ Mining has received increasing attention in the past few years because the method offers many attractive possibilities in improving the environmental impact of mining as well as making feasible the extraction of deeper, low value mineral reserves. This paper will present a brief discussion of the state-of- the-art in total solution, slurry removal and leach mining. As a specific example of utilizing the method, the uranium deposits of South Texas are a type of deposit which have been considered as being amenable to in situ leach mining. The parameters required to ascertain the amenability of such a deposit for in situ leaching will be presented. The hydrological factors which influence the production of the soluble uranium solutions and their displacement will be discussed. Mathematical models for various well configurations have been made and graphic representation will be presented to illustrate various production methods and the resultant hydrological consequences.

WHEN diamond drilling was introduced in the Rhokana mines in 1939 it was used principally for pillar removal and for completion of the upper portions of shrinkage stopes which were being affected by increasing pressure. This method of drilling long blastholes proved so successful that it was extended gradually to cover stoping, pillar recovery, and hanging cave work. By 1949 virtually all the production of Mindola and Nkana was being obtained by this method. At the present time 87,500 ft are drilled each month by the 80 diamond drills in daily operation. Responsibility for control and issue of diamond drilling equipment and crowns, as well as tabulation of all performance figures, was taken over by a specially formed Roto drill department, which also investigated the problems encountered with this new method. To assist this department a fully equipped test chamber, Fig. 1, was established underground where performances of various types of machines and equipment could be studied under conditions as nearly uniform as possible.

Position of the Porphyries in US Copper Supply The United States continues to be the largest producer and consumer of copper in the world. [Table 1] shows several production statistics for 1974, the most recent year that the non-communist world copper industry might consider a good year, and for 1976 and 1977. In 1974 an estimated 24% of the non-communist world's newly mined copper was mined in the US, and 87.89% of that was from the western porphyry coppers. In 1976 US new mine production was down to 22% of the non-communist world's newly mined copper, and the percentage of US new mine production supplied by the porphyry coppers had risen to 89-91%. In 1977 the statistics remained the same as in 1976. US porphyry copper production represented about 65% of US refined copper consumption in 1974, rose to 75% in 1976, and dropped back to 61% in 1977 as imports of foreign copper into the US began to swell. The financial situation of the porphyry copper mining industry continues to be very unhealthy. To see why; we can take a quick look at costs and prices.

FOR two years past the Warwick Furnace, at Pottstown, Pa., has attracted attention by the remarkable work done in it, and a statement giving details of its operation and the unexpectedly short blast of 1880 will be acceptable to every member who studies blast-furnace practice. There are so many interesting features in con¬nection with this blast, and so much to be learned from investigating it, that the results of a thorough examination are offered to the Institute sans theories. In collecting the information, the courtesy of the various officers of the Warwick Iron Company was of material advantage, every facility for investigation being extended and an inspection of records being kindly permitted. CRAFTS,* Toronto, Canada (written discussion?).-During the forging of 9.2-in. shells -for the United States Army, it was noticed that better results were obtained in certain instances when test bars had been held sometime before pulling. An investigation, therefore, was made by our metallographer, Mr. F. M. Arnold, to determine the effect of seasoning. The forging consists of a single operation, piercing a solid cast blank. The test sections were cut from the walls by an oxyacetylene flame, one piece from the nose end and one from the base on the opposite side. The test pieces were not heat treated in any way and the tests and seasonings were carried on at normal atmospheric temperatures. The specifica-tions were as follows: Standard 2-in. test bar, 0.505 in. in diameter; elastic limit, over 19 long tons, or 42,500 lb.; ultimate stress, 39.6 to 49.1 long tons, or 87,500 to 110,000 lb. per sq. in.; elongation, over 13 per cent. As a preliminary test two heats were selected; BP555, which was tested and reported failed on elongation on Aug. 20; and B01771, which was tested and reported failed on Aug. 24. On Aug. 29, retests were cut and machined from the same shells and held till Sept. 3 (5 days) when they were pulled. Both sets of results are given below.

Ore deposits of the western U.S. are divisible broadly into two genetic groups, a smaller one that fits the plate tectonic model of subduction and a larger one that appears unrelated to subduction. Some of the middle Paleozoic and lower-middle Mesozoic ore deposits in the western U.S. are associated with eugeosynclinal rocks and lie a few hundred kilometers west of reconstructed continent margins. These deposits probably formed as a result of subduction beneath oceanic or thin continental crust that was analogous to subduction predicated for the Kuroko massive sulfide deposits of Japan. Some middle Mesozoic porphyry copper deposits may have formed east of the continental margin when subduction-generated magmas were emplaced high in continental crust in a manner analogous to subduction-generated magmas that formed the Andean porphyry copper deposits. Most Cretaceous-Cenozoic ore deposits lie in a broad region extending many hundreds of kilometers east of the continent margin and characterized by conjugate tectonic zones, high terrestial heat flow, and low seismic velocity in the upper mantle. The deposits likely were formed in relation to magmas generated along the conjugate tectonic zones during differential northwestward drift and internal wrenching of the continental plate.

Major transverse structural zones in the western U.S. such as the Lewis and Clark line, Walker Lane, Texas lineament, and Colorado mineral belt, have localized important mineral districts. In Nevada and Utah the alinement of Cretaceous and Tertiary mineral deposits, such as in the Pioche, Eureka, Manhattan, and other mineral belts, may be related to similar tectonic features. All the mineral belts in Nevada and Utah have produced precious and base metals and tungsten; the Manhattan belt in addition has produced magnesite and brucite; and the Pioche belt, uranium, fluorspar, and alunite. Specific types of ore deposits seem related spatially to major belts of the Paleozoic Cordilleran geosyncline and compositionally to the intrusive bodies with which they are associated.

The first all-hydraulic drill introduced in the US began test drilling in a Missouri under round lead mine in mid-1973. Since that time, the hydraulic drill concept has slowly, and sometimes haltingly, come of age. Now, backed by impressive performance records and operator acceptance, hydraulic drills promise to produce a quantum leap in mining efficiency and, sometimes, major changes in mine and quarry engineering.

Industrial minerals are becoming increasingly important in Colorado's mining industry, not only in production value but also in the variety available and in their potential development for both conventional and new uses. Fluorspar, building stone, fire clay, and pegmatite minerals have been historically important but are not now extensively mined. Aggregates (sand, gravel, and crushed stone), cement materials, metallurgical limestone, and common clays currently are the highest valued commodities. Those offering the greatest future potential include diamonds, nahcolite and dawsonite associated with oil shale, alunite, potash, zeolites, and rare earths.

Improved safety, economy, and flexibility-which translate into increased productivity-promote the case for greater utilization of diesel-powered equipment in underground coal mines. On the other hand, opponents of diesel use say that the alleged health hazards are not worth it. Who's right? The continuing debate was the focus of a special "Diesels in Underground Coal Mining" session held during the SME-AIME Fall Meeting in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., last September. Looking at the record to date, there are more than 20,000 diesel-powered units operating in underground mines throughout the world; more than 1000 are in Western European coal mines and 10,000 such units are in North American mines. Surprisingly, of the 10,000 North American units, only 200 are utilized in US underground coal mines.

The effect of poisoning on the behavior of platinum electrodes in redox potential measurements in metallurgical systems was studied in the presence of such inorganic surfactants as cyanide and sulfide and such organic surfactants as dodecylammonium acetate, trimethyldodecylammonium chloride, potassium ethyl xanthate, and potassium diethyl dithiophosphate (Aerofloat®). These chemical species represent, more or less, typical constituents encountered in leaching, flotation, and sewage treatment systems. Triangular wave voltammetry was used as the experimental technique to study the nature of poisoned surfaces. Among the species studied hydrogen sulfide and dodecylamine were found to form a resistant surface film affecting charge transfer. Platinum electrodes appeared to have a weaker tendency to adsorb sulfide species in alkaline pH ranges, while cyanide, xanthate, and dithiophosphate affected the normal electrode behavior differently. Possible methods of reactivation of a poisoned electrode by mechanical cleaning are suggested.

During the last 15 years, the bucket wheel has become increasingly popular as a mining tool. Being a large-capacity continuous mining excavator, the machine offers low actual operating costs and low unit costs. Of German origin, the bucket wheel has now appeared on the American mining scene as well as in such other places as Australia, Northern Rhodesia, South Africa, Congo, Indonesia, and India. Patented in 1913, the first practical application waited until 1920 when a bucket wheel excavator was placed in operation at an open pit lignite mine in central Germany. This initial experiment met with little success due to difficulties in solving the technical problems of the machine's construction rather than to the design of the wheel itself.
