DURING the past year considerable work dealing with physical properties of cartridge brass was done at the University of Michigan in cooperation with the Ordnance Department of the U. S. Army. This paper gives some of the data bearing on the effect of the anneal, previous to the final reduction or rolling, on the physical properties, particularly the hardness. Various phases of the subject of physical properties of cartridge brass have been presented by different investigators. Mathewson and Phillips1 refer to the work of Grard, in 1909, as the first systematic presentation of the relation between temperature-and time of anneal; changing of physical properties and microstructure, and the previous reduction by cold rolling. They discuss the relation between time and temperature of anneal and the previous reduction by cold rolling also; the relation between physical properties and grain size of annealed brass. The degree of deformation previous to the annealing was found to determine the temperature at which recrystallization and corresponding changes in physical properties would take place. Bassett and Davis,2 in establishing the relation between grain size and Brinell hardness; found the hardness for low-temperature annealing to be dependent on the previous degree of reduction, while for anneals above a certain temperature the hardness after the anneal was independent of the degree of reduction. Actual differences in hardness, due to the degree of reduction, disappear only on annealing at 600° C. or above; though the differences for metal subjected to different degrees of reduction and annealed at temperatures between 350° and 600° C. were found to be relatively small. The electrical resistivity and the temperature coefficient of resistivity were measured with a potentiometric method using pure mercury as a reference material. Measurements were made nea,v roorn temperature. A detailed study was made of Hg,TI, near its melting temperature. THE work to be described was originally undertaken to provide the necessary data for interpreting the results of some optical experiments,' but because of the growing importance of liquid metals,273 it appeared that the results of the resistivity measurements should be published separately. For convenience the alloys selected were those which are liquid at room temperature. Special consideration was given to the Hg-T1 alloy closely corresponding to Hg,Tl, because recent X-ray diffraction results of Smallman and Frost seemed to show that the solid structure may persist to some extent into the 1iquid. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A potentiometric method was employed in which the resistivity of mercury was used as a reference. The essential features of the samples are shown in Fig. 1. A capillary tube CT with a bore of approximately 1.5 mm was fitted into two end cups, T, which were made of Teflon. A pair of current electrodes CE were immersed into the excess liquid metal which partly filled the end cups. The potential electrodes PE were inserted into CT through short pieces N of a no. 18 hypodermic needle held in place with Saureisen cement SC. As shown, the lower ends of the PE7s were reduced in diameter to 0.25 mm to minimize the distortion of the liquid metal cross section. Several methods were used to insert an alloy into the sample, but the usual one with mercury alloys was to fill the sample container with a weighed quantity of pure mercury* and then add weighed the sample tube in a vacuum. Because of rapid corrosion, samples containing gallium were of necessity prepared in a vacuum. To obtain the specific resistivity of an alloy the resistance of the sample containing the alloy was measured and compared with the resistance when the container was filled with mercury. Resistances were measured in the temperature range of 20" to 60°C to obtain the temperature coefficient of resistance. The electrical measurements were made by connecting the sample in series with the standard one-ohm resistance, and the potential drop measured alternately over the sample and the standard resistance. To correct for stray thermoelectric effects provision was made for reversing the direction of the current, and the true potential drop was taken to be the average of that obtained for the two directions of current flow. Various materials were used for the electrodes, the most uniform results being obtained with nickel. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS The numerical results are presented graphically in Figs. 2 and 3 and in tabular form in Tables I and 11. The thermodynamic properties of- liquid Mg-Pb allojs have been determined by an isopiestic method from 18 to 42 at. pct Pb and by a thevmodynumic analysis of the phase diagram frofiz 0 to 100 at. pct Pb. In the overlapping composition range the magneszupn activity values derived by the two methods are in excellent agreement, thus mutually supporting the correctness of the Mg-Pb phase diagram previously determined by the authors and of the acticitzes deriz~ed isopiestically. SEVERAL studies have been made of the thermody-namic properties of liquid Mg-Pb alloys. Wagner and Engelhardt,1 Lantratov,2 Knappwost,3 Sryvalin et al.* and Wilson5 used the electromotive-force method, Scheil and Wolf8 and Schmahl and Sieben" applied the transpiration technique, and the present authors8 utilized the phase diagram to determine the activity of magnesium in the Mg-Pb system. The results of these studies are not in very good agreement and could not be incorporated into a general systematic analysis of the thermodynamic properties of the homologous series of the Mg-Group IV B systems Mg-Pb,8 Mg-Sn,° Mg-Ge,10and Mg-Si.11 The thermodynamic properties of the Mg-Pb system were therefore re investigated by an isopiestic technique which has been developed for similar studies in the Mg-SnB and Mg-Ge10 systems- Lead specimens, contained in iron or graphite crucibles, were heated in a temperature gradient in an evacuated and sealed titanium reaction tube and equilibrated with magnesium vapor of known vapor pressure to form alloys of compositions which depended on their temperatures, the temperature of the magnesium vapor source, and the thermodynamic properties of the system. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Magnesium (Dominion Magnesium Ltd., Toronto, Canada) of 99.99+ pct purity and lead (American Smelting and Refining Co.) of 99.999 pct purity were used. In the early experiments, Runs 2 and 3, the alloys were contained in uncovered high-purity iron crucibles. Alloys formed in the uncovered iron crucibles had to be chemically analyzed owing to the slight volatility of lead under the imposed experimental equilibration conditions. The compositions of these alloys were determined by a gravimetric analysis of lead as lead chromate. To avoid this problem, the remaining runs were made in covered graphite crucibles machined from high-density (1.92 g per cu cm) graphite rods (Basic Carbon Corp., Sanborn, N.Y.) which had a maximum ash content of less than 0.04 pct. The non- i reactivity of graphite with lead and magnesium has been previously established,' and the experimental procedure has been described in full detail.' In the runs using covered graphite crucibles it was found that the weight increases of the crucibles and their contents after equilibration equaled the magnesium contents of the alloys within the accuracy of the chemical analysis (i0.3 at. pct Pb). Clearly, the small lid openings of the graphite crucibles prevented significant lead losses during a run, and the weight increase was therefore taken as the magnesium content of the alloys. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS At thermodynamic equilibrium the magnesium partial pressure of the specimens equaled that of the reservoir. Since the magnesium reservoir was always maintained at the temperature minimum of the system, the activity of magnesium of any specimen was given by the ratio of the magnesium reservoir pressure to the vapor pressure of pure magnesium at the specimen temperature. THE present-day application of geological knowledge to mine opera-tions owes much to Survey activities. Early publications covering developed deposits at Comstock and Eureka in Nevada, and Leadville in Colorado, aroused great interest in mine geology among mine owners and operators. In later years personal contacts between Survey geologists, notably Lindgren, Spurr, Emmons, Weed, and Ransome, to name only a few, and mine managers, mine superintendents and mine foremen, brought directly home the importance of geological mapping and study in connection with mine operations. However, the Survey had recognized from the beginning that it was not practicable, either from the viewpoint of cost or policy, to supply direct help to the miner. The situation was met by many large mining companies through the organization of geological departments to deal with problems of geology which concerned not alone the every-day mine operation but also the life expectancy of the ore deposit. The mine owner therefore looked to the mine geologist to apply the "laws of ore deposition" in estimating the future of his mine. The examination of outside properties also became a duty of the company geologist where replacements were needed or where expansion of operations was contem-plated. And finally, out of this situation there developed the inde-pendent consulting geologist, specializing in geological examinations of prospects, mines, and mining districts, whose duties included the highly important but often difficult task of appraising ore reserves and ore possibilities. Thus, while it may be considered by many that the work of the mine geologist overlaps that of the Survey geologist, their respective fields of endeavor are not in conflict. The appearance of the mine geologist has lessened in no manner the need of intensive field and research work by the Geological Survey and related organizations.

MY FIRST paper dealing with the theories of the hardening of steel by rapid cooling was published in the Transactions of this Institute in 1896-30 years ago-under the title "The Microstructure of Steel and the Current Theories of Hardening;" hence, also, the title of the present paper. It was extensively discussed and was, I believe, one of the starting points of many subsequent papers and discussions of the same subject, discusssions which at times became almost violent and which led to the formation of different schools such as the "Carbonists" and the "Allotropists." Some of the older members of the Institute, who took part in the debate or who were interested observers, will, I am sure, have kept a vivid remembrance of it. The controversy gradually quieted down, apparently for lack of ammunition, without any side acknowledging defeat. Recently, however, interest in it has been revived through the claims of some that these vexed questions had at last been solved. In an effort to ascertain if possible the prevailing view of those best qualified to express an opinion a questionnaire was submitted to the following gentlemen: J. 0. The first diesel-powered Scooptram has now been in service for 21/2 yr at the I-C mine of Martin County Coal Corp. It has become the workhorse of the operation, being used around the clock many days. The fleet of nine 20-ton capacity Teletrams used behind three Jeffrey Heliminers now have more than 1 1/2-yr experience in the Coalburg mine. They have been exposed to some difficult conditions which, include steep grades, water, mud, and rutted roadways. These units have proven to he both rugged and powerful. The safety components and shutdown systems make these haulage units very safe for underground coal mines. A clean-burning engine, a satisfactory exhaust conditioning system, and good ventilation are the keys to maintaining a safe and healthful atmosphere for the underground operators and other employees.
