ED DIX, after studying both mechanical and electrical engineering at Cornell, started out to be an electrical engineer, then taught material testing at Cornell, and decided to become a metallurgist. He was successively employed by the Morse Chain Co. as metallographist, by the Baltimore Copper Smelting and Rolling Co., as chief of the testing department of the Bureau of Aircraft Production, as assistant engineer of tests of the Aluminum Castings Co., and as chief of the metals branch, engineering division, U. S. Air Service. Since 1923 he has been with the Aluminum Co. of America, now as chief metallurgist.

CLYDE WILLIAMS, after graduating from the University of Utah as a chemical engineer, worked for a time in western mills and smelters. He then joined the U. S. Bureau of Mines and during the World War studied Ordnance Department and Navy problems on ferroalloys and alloy steels at the Cornell University laboratories. Later, as superintendent of the Northwest Experiment Station of the Bureau, he was active in electric furnace and ore reduction work. W. R. CHEDSEY first saw the light of day in Boulder, Colo., in 1887, and will celebrate his birthday on Feb. 11. Mining early attracted him, so he went to the Colorado School of Mines, from which he received his E.M. in 1908, and an honorary doctor's degree thirty years later. The next three years he spent at the University of Idaho, doing special work in mechanical and electrical engineering and serving as associate professor of mining engineering. Leaving Idaho in 1911 he went to Central America as chief engineer and general superintendent of the Central American Development Co. The next year he jumped several thousand miles to the north to become chief engineer and assistant general manager of the Alaska Exploration Co. But teaching was Chedsey's choice so he returned to his alma mater, serving on the faculty at Golden from 1913 to 1916. Then to Penn State where he was professor of mining for 21 years, until going to Rolla to become director of the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy in 1937.

ALTHOUGH Thomas Savier Washburn, known always to his friends and associates as "Tom," entered this world in Minneapolis, the Flour Capital of America, and the tradition of flour milling was associated with his family name, he decided early to turn his back on such dusty pursuits and to court the Goddess of Fortune in the more romantic fields of mining and the metallurgy of iron and steel. Born in March 1901, his early education was gained successively in the Minneapolis public schools and the Blake School until 1918, and then in Phillips Andover Academy until 1920.

OPERATING a "muck stick" never appealed to me. It always seemed a terrible waste of energy to "put rocks in the box" by hand-particularly when my own personal energy was involved. But during the past forty years, there have been periods-more or less extended when I was compelled, against my finer instincts, to muck or quit eating. For about the same length of time, I have devised schemes to make mucking faster and more painless. There was always something mechanically wrong with these designs-too many;" parts to wear out and need replacement, and excessive cost incidental to a complicated mechanism. The idea of a shovel unit comprised of a single, rigid assembly which would roll from a digging to dumping position solved the problem of simplicity and durability. If 1929 witnessed a growing realization on the part of the oil industry that supply must be balanced against demand, 1930 proved conclusively that excessive inventories constitute a price depressant even with balanced conditions. Increased attention was certainly paid to economic considerations last year, and the achievement of holding daily crude production, with a constantly mounting potential, to levels 500,000 bbl. below the output of the summer before, deserves special mention. The ill-advised accumulation, however, of gasoline stocks, at least 10,000,000 bbl. larger than necessary, nullified the restraint exercised by the producers and finally necessitated drastic downward price revisions. An event of special significance was the appointment by the Federal Oil Conservation Board, last March, of a temporary Committee on Petroleum Economics that attempted a forecast of demand, an estimate of supply, and an allocation of the latter between the principal producing states. Thus for the first time was an economic program for an entire basic industry drafted by an independent body under the auspices of the Federal Government. The report was widely discussed and generally approved, but its schedules were not adopted by the refining division nor by oil producers in the State of Texas until too late to contribute to the industry's prosperity during 1930. If the restraint of November had been exercised in May a profitable year might have been the result: The gasoline price war in California during June, however, illustrated the point that even with a fairly sound statistical position insistent pressure to expand normal marketing outlets must result in losses to all concerned. The balanced program so painfully attained by producers must be maintained by refiners and distributors to be completely effective. Again in November the Federal Oil Conservation Board, acting on the request of the directors of the American Petroleum Institute, called its Committee on Petroleum Economics back into existence to prepare a new estimate for the next six months. For a number of years an intensive study has been made to improve the blast-furnace practice at Copperhill not only as to costs but to provide a good grade of gas for the acid plants. This study, took us back to the fundamentals of successful pyrite smelting; namely, a blast furnace working on a clean sulfide ore, free from fines, and the use of quartz high in silica as a flux. In 1919, the quality of the flux was improved and its effect on the metallurgy was very marked. To improve the practice further, it was necessary to work out some method of treatment for the sulfide fines and the siliceous and refractory ores, other than in the blast furnace. A series of milling tests indicated that these products could be successfully treated by differential flotation, and in 1922 plans were made and a flotation plant built. It was estimated that the flotation plant would deliver to the smelter 40 to 50 tons of concentrates per day; the problem was what to do with these concentrates. It was out of the question to attempt to smelt them in a blast furnace because of the dust losses and, because our practice demands a charge free from fines for satisfactory operation. There is no custom smelter in the vicinity to which concentrates may be sold, pending the time when the tonnage will be sufficient to warrant roasters and a reverbatory furnace. Sintering and nodulizing were investigated but neither method fitted into our scheme of metallurgy. A close study of the converter practice was then made to see if some method could not be evolved to smelt this tonnage of concentrates in a converter without preliminary treatment. At that time, the converter installation consisted of two 12-ft. Great Falls converters, which were handling 12 to 14 per cent. matte. The heat balance of the converters working with 12 to 14 per cent. matte was more than sufficient to smelt the contemplated tonnage of concentrates but the mechanical difficulties. of feeding fines into the Great Falls converter made the use of this type of converter impractical.

There was a general upward trend of all petroleum activities in Oklahoma during 1933, especially in the last quarter, though the average price for crude oil for the year was below 1932 and overproduction in East Texas demoralized conditions for several months. As the Federal Agencies established under the National Industry Recovery Act began to function conditions in Oklahoma were visibly affected and production of "hot oil" from Oklahoma City field practically ceased. More oil wells were completed, six new fields discovered, extensive geophysical prospecting carried on in many parts of the state, and an increased amount of clean-out and reconditioning work done in older pools during the past year. To increase quantity and rate of recovery of oil many wells producing from limestone formations were treated with hydrochloric acid. The Oklahoma City field had a reported production of 66,984,570 bbl. of oil during 1933, or almost exactly twice the amount reported for 1932. Potential tests and other indicators show that the wells are rapidly approaching the stage where mechanical lift must be applied to all of them, including the wells in the Wilcox sand zone. The major pipe-line companies serving the oil fields of Oklahoma have been anxious to make connections to all wells during 1933 and have indicated a willingness to accept all oil available. The amount offered has been restricted by proration orders, but the state did produce 178,356,-449 bbl. during the year, an increase of about 18.6 per cent over 1932. This increase was practically all due to the greater demand for Oklahoma City oil, as all other pools of any importance showed loss in production or very small gains last year. The U. S. Bureau of Mines' laboratory reports the lubricating distillate content of Oklahoma City crude from Arbuckle and Lower Simpson formations about 17 per cent by volume. IN welcoming the attending members of the Ameri-can Zinc Institute's Ninth Annual Meeting to St. Louis on April 18, the president of the Chamber of Commerce stressed the notable progress that had been made during nine years, marked by many price de-pressions and internal dissensions, while controversies between miners and smeltermen threatened to wreck the organization, prices dropped, and consumption grew languid for want of organized publicity and research. The reports and recommendations of Percy B. Butler, chairman of the Adjustment Committee, and F. C. Wallower, chairman of the Galvanizing Committee, might well be adopted as the institute's objectives. In reply to the speeches of welcome to St. Louis, Arthur Thacher reminded the delegates that the cor-ner stone of progress in the mineral industries was laid by the formation of the American Institute of Mining Engineers in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., in 1871, and the dedication of that organization to the exchange of ideas and methods of the winning of metals and non-metals from their crude state. The activities of the American Zinc Institute constitute, he said, a valuable phase of that work. Mr. Thacher forecast the treat-ment of 1 per cent zinc ore. After the reading of the report of the board of directors, in which Scott Turner and Louis Boschern were named as honorary members of the institute, a survey of world zinc conditions by A. J. M. Sharpe of London was presented. He held pres-ent conditions in China responsible for much of the present depression in zinc. World stocks on, April 1, 1927, were estimated as 52,900 metric tons. Adolph Boldt's paper on "Solidarity in Industry" was followed by a survey of the Tri-State district by Otto Ruhl, who emphasized the importance to the dis-trict of the organization of the Tri-State section of the A.I.M.E., which already has 135 members and asso¬ciates. He also mentioned .that flotation in the Tri¬State field is adding 1500 tons of concentrate to the weekly production. "Mining Economics" was the subject of Julian D. Conover, secretary of the Tri-State Zinc and Lead Ore Producers Association. He gave a detailed report on the costs of mining and milling in the district.

In past years the exploration of the oil possibilities of Colombia has been confined to parts of three distinct physiographic provinces; namely, the coastal plains area near the Caribbean Sea, the Magdalena Valley and the upper reaches of the Maracaibo Basin near the Venezuelan border. During 1935, little exploratory work and no drilling was carried on on the coast, but there was considerable activity in the other two areas. In the Magdalena Valley, the Tropical Oil Co. continued its producing and development operations on the De Mares Concession. The Socony-Vacuum exercised the option it acquired in 1934 on Sr. Luciano Restrepo's concession adjacent to the Tropical property and north of the Sogamoso River. No wells have been started on the Socony's lands although, according to the terms of the lease, drilling must be started within the next two years. West of the Carare River and adjacent to the Tropical's southwestern boundary, the Sociedad Nacional del Carare denounced the lands formerly held by the Union Colombiana, whose lease automatically lapsed during the year owing to the company's failure to comply with its drilling obligations. In the same area, the concessions held by Callejas et al. and the Société Européene des Pétroles are also understood to have lapsed for the same reason. Holdings of other interests in the Magdalena Valley were inactive during the year. Near the upper part of the Maracaibo Basin, the Gulf, through its subsidiary the Colombian Petroleum Co., continued active exploration and development on its Barco concession. Colombian Petroleum Co.—The following information and that presented in the accompanying tables relating to the activities of the Colombian Petroleum Co. was supplied through the courtesy of Mr. E. S. Bleecker, chief geologist of that company. Four wells were completed during the year on the north Petrolea dome, where an attempt is being made to define the limits of the field. On the south end of the Petrolea anticline, one well, Petrolea No. 3, which might be classed as a wildcat, encountered a heavy flow of salt water immediately below the oil zone and had to be abandoned.
