The paper reports the development of a large, slow speed ball mill closed circuited with a hvdro-scillator. This increased grinding efficiency 28 pct over conventional units. AS the title indicates, this is a progress report for the first year of experimental operation of a relatively large diameter, slow speed ball mill with 1-in. balls, with and without various classifiers, and including a hydroscillator. Several years ago the authors came to the conclusion that if any further progress were to be made in our flotation process, an understanding of the chemical and physical reactions and the control thereof, in the grinding circuit, was essential. It may be stated, at this point, that the preparation of a correct feed for the flotation process is still the number one objective of our grinding studies. This progress report deals with grinding "per se," and not with the chemical and physical reactions as the result of grinding. Prior to this time we had taken the naive position, that since grinding had been practiced by the industry for some fifty years or more, it had been well exploited and developed by a host of investigators. Consequently, we had given the matter only superficial attention. At the start of our study, we were aware of the fact that some difference in opinion existed, but we were not prepared for the controversial evidence that developed nor for the extent to which the experts differed in their viewpoints. There seemed nothing else to do but to tour the continent and decide for ourselves what was right and what was wrong, read all the published literature and visit with anyone who had ideas about the matter. This we did over the next few ensuing years. Since our study has met with some measure of success, we report, herewith, these data that ultimately they may be of help to other investigators. In 1944 it became necessary to increase our grinding capacity and at the same time to grind the sulphide portion a little finer. This provided the impetus to put our ideas into effect. As has been previously described, our grinding flowsheet at that time consisted of a 6x12 rod mill, followed by two 5x10 ft, and one 6x12 ft trunnion overflow ball mills, with conventional rake classifiers. Naturally, we first considered all the possibilities of altering or adding to the existing equipment. It became evident that if any appreciable increase in grinding efficiency could be obtained, it would pay to scrap the existing small mills and classifiers and install one big mill with adequate classification. NUMEROUS investigations of the effects of the various impurities common to commercial coppers have been published, and the data have found wide use in industry. Naturally, emphasis has been placed on the oxygen-bearing coppers of the tough-pitch variety, but need is now evident for data covering the oxygen-free condition as well. Furthermore, relatively few of the important reactions between oxygen and the various impurities are well understood, and often the data at hand are not applicable to the low concentrations encountered in commercial coppers. This paper presents the changes in conductivity and softening temperature derived from individual additions of the group VIII triad, iron, cobalt and nickel, to high-purity copper, and constitutes a portion of the copper-research program being conducted at the Central Research Laboratory of the American Smelting and Refining Co. The method of preparation of high-purity copper and its alloys in either the oxygen-free or oxygen-bearing form has been described previously.1 The purity of this material, and the methods developed to produce it, provide the means for direct investigation of the very low concentration range in which the various impurities generally exist in commercial coppers. The usual necessity for extrapolation to this range using the results obtained from higher concentrations, and the interfering effects of extraneous impurities, are thus simultaneously circumvented. Since previously published data have adequately presented the effects of higher concentrations of iron, cobalt and nickel, the present investigation has been confined to the composition range 0 to 0.05 per cent. All alloys were initially prepared in the form of oxygen-free continuous cast rod, the weighed alloying additions in suitable form being charged with the pure copper to the continuous casting crucible. The best of the available high-purity alloying materials were used, and spectrographic analyses confirmed the absence of interfering elements from the alloys formed. Each series was compounded in the direction of increasing concentration, starting with pure copper in a new crucible and finishing with the 0.05 per cent alloy. Composition was closely controlled by adding the alloying element in the form of a carefully compounded and analyzed master alloy rendered uniform by continuous casting. The accuracy of this method of synthesis was proved by chemical analysis of the more concentrated alloys, and, accordingly, there is every reason to credit the stated composition of the very dilute alloys in the range where chemical analysis becomes highly uncertain. Oxygen-free samples for measurements of conductivity and softening temperature were obtained by drawing the continuous cast rod to wire of 0.081-in. diameter, employing a number of intermediate anneals to refine the grain structure. The composition of the coexisting phases in the methane-ethane-n-pentane system was determined at 100°F. This was accomplished by withdrawing samples of the coexisting phases under isobaric-isothermal conditions. The relative amount of each of the components present in the liquid and gas phases was determined by conventional analytical fractionation methods. The phase behavior of this system approximates that estimated from generalized correlations which take into account the influence of the nature and amount of each of the components present upon the equilibrium. It was found that for particular pressures and temperatures the equilibrium constant of each of the components was influenced significantly by the composition of the system and this effect was more pronounced at the lower pressures for methane than for the components of greater molecular weight. However, at the higher pressures approaching the maximum two-phase pressure for the system at this temperature the composition markedly influences the equilibrium constants of all the components at a particular pressure and temperature. The results of this study are presented in graphical and tabular form. Introduction The phase behavior of many of the binary systems containing parafin hydrocarbon components from methane through n-pentane has been investigated during recent years. In addition the compositions of the coexisting phases in mixtures of crude oil and natural gas have been studied.' However, these results do not establish the influence of the nature and amount of the other substances making up a multi-component system upon the gas-liquid equilibrium constant of any one component. A preliminary correlation on the basis of values for binary systems was made2 utilizing such experimental information as was available. However, there is need for much additional information regarding behavior in systems containing more than two components. Study of the phase behavior of ternary systems offers a feasible attack upon the determination of the influence of composition as well as of pressure and temperature upon the several equilibrium constants concerned. An investigation of the phase behavior of the methane-propane-n-pentane system at 100°, 160°, and 220°F was reported.".' This work served to illustrate the marked influence of concentration of the other components upon the equilibrium constants. Variations of as much as 50 pct in the equilibrium constants for methane for fixed temperature and pressure were observed in regions remote from the critical state. Likewise there was a marked variation in the equilibrium constants of propane and n-pentane as a result of changes in the composition. These results indicated the desirability of investigating additional ternary systems. The present paper deals with a study of the methane-ethane-n- pen-tane system at 100°F, which is similar in many respects to the work upon the meth-ane-propane-n-pentane system cited above.

DETAILED programs for the Regional Meeting to be held at Boston, on Aug. 29, 30, 31, will be available on arrival at the Copley-Plaza Hotel, where registration will begin at 10 a. m. on Wednesday morning. The opening session will be non-technical in character and will be called to order at 11 a. m. Hector J. Hughes, Dean of the Graduate School of Engineering of Harvard University, and others will speak, and in the afternoon visits are to be made both to Harvard and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Wednesday afternoon will be devoted mainly to the opening of an exhibit of geophysical instruments and methods at Tech. On the way back to the hotel a tour of Old Boston will permit the visitors to see many of the historic points of the city. A special meeting of the Board of Directors has been called to be preceded by the usual subscription dinner at the University Club at 6.30 p. m. Owing to limita-tions of room, invitations have been sent only to the usual list designated in the By-Laws, the Directors, past officers, chairmen of sections and of technical committees. The dinner and a brief business session of the Board will be followed by a technical session at the Copley-Plaza at 8 p. m. and this in turn by a buffet supper at the University Club at 10 p. m. Sep-arate entertainment is being provided for the women for the evening. Thursday will be devoted to technical sessions both in the morning and afternoon. If necessary to permit adequate discussion, an overflow session will be ar-ranged in the afternoon. In the evening, a subscription dinner will be given at the Copley-Plaza at which past-presidents John Hays Hammond and Robert H. Rich-ards will be guests of honor. It is promised that speeches will be short and dancing will be arranged for following. The women will be offered a luncheon and bridge party at one of the country clubs on Thursday, and Friday will be devoted to an all-day excursion for both men and, women. Members are asked to register promptly on arrival so that the various committees will know as early as possible for how many to provide. The major part of the technical program has been provided by the Committee on Geophysical Methods of Prospecting, and a series of papers of great value and interest in this new field has been brought together. Abstracts of substantially all of them are printed in this issue of MINING AND METALLURGY and the papers themselves will, with one or two exceptions, be avail-able in printed form at the meeting and later in the regular publications of the Institute.

DEPLETION of anthracite resources in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, has forced the recovery of coal tracts formerly considered unminable. Chief among these are the large areas of outcrop coal lying on a heavy pitch on the mountain sides, abandoned thirty or forty years ago as too costly and too hazardous to mine. The old companies, in many instances, stopped their chambers 80 or 100 ft. hack from the actual outcrop, and then dropped back another 100 ft. before starting to rob the pillars, thus leaving large areas of coal. Recovery of this coal naturally leads to mining hazards not encountered years ago. The first step is to sink a slope from the surface with the pitch of the vein, and then drive counters across the pitch as close to the robbed area as proper protection for the lower side of the -counter will permit. Next, the old chambers are advanced or new ones driven in the solid, as the conditions require. As these chambers approach the outcrop the real safety work begins-that of preventing the miner from being buried or locked in by an avalanche of mud.

THE Chairman of the Iron and Steel Division for 1945 is one of the most versatile and best-known men in this industry, with wide experience in research and operations and in handling both the men and the materials that are used in enormous quantities. Erle G. (Doe) Hill was born in Santa Ana, (alit, April 21, 1890 and graduated (Bachelor of Science) in mining and metallurgy from the University of California in 1913. For the next five years lie held a variety of jobs as miner, foreman, and null superintendent in gold, silver, copper, and quicksilver mines in the West and in Mexico. As Doe was an individual endowed with an exceptional amount of horse sense, he left the West in 1918, to become instructor of mining engineering and ore dressing at Carnegie Institute of Technology, and while in that post did considerable consulting work as a geologist and mining engineer. In 1920, still possessing the same common sense. he got out of mining engineering and geology and became associate professor of metallurgy at the University of Pittsburgh, a position he retained for nearly ten years.

LET us return and follow our first intention of discussing the art of melting. Since I have demonstrated to you how large works are made, you may have thought that the way to the small ones was also open to you, and you would not have been mistaken. But in order to avoid work and expense there are shorter and easier ways to be used, both because the things can be handled more easily and because it is not necessary to have so much regard for the forces of small materials. Therefore, wishing to make a distinction for you, I shall call this the small art of casting. Before speaking of this, I shall tell you of several methods of making powders for moulding. Then I shall also tell you of the methods of moulding in boxes and in frames, and how the said powders are to be prepared for casting either dry or green. Then I shall tell you some methods that are held as secret by the masters for handling the metals in melting and making them flow readily, so that you may easily fill the cavities of your moulds.

Closed-circuit television was first installed under- ground by United States Steel's Tenessee Coal & Iron Division during the summer of 1957. Placed at a rotary dump location in one of TCI's mines, the installation was designed to permit operation of all functions of the load car haul chain, rotary dump, and empty car haul chain from a remote location, and to improve safety. The initial installation was very successful, and similar ones were subsequently placed at all of TCI's operating ore mines. The 10-ton capacity, automatic coupled mine cars are placed on the load car haul chain by the main-line locomotives. The haulage dispatcher has been located at the skip loading point of the underground pocket, some 80 to 100 ft below the rotary dump. The video monitor is located so the operator has a constant view of the activities around the rotary dump. By means of remote controls, the TV camera can range through a four-way turret of lens changes, can pan 350° in about nine seconds, can tilt 45° up or 45° down in nine seconds, and also can range through an optical focus for any of the lens positions.

IN 1926 I had occasion to make numerous measure-ments with a Pitot tube. The differential gage was mounted in a box, and since the work entailed setting upon girders, staging, and flues of various shapes and slopes, much time was generally expended in getting the box blocked into the level position. This inconvenience was so considerable that I devised the gage stand shown in the accompanying illustration. The gage is bolted to the board seat, the bolt per-mitting unlimited adjustment in the plane of the paper. The seat, carrying the gage, revolves on trunnions, per-mitting unlimited adjustment in a second plane, per-pendicular to the first. Consequently, the stand may be stood up, hung by one corner, leaned against some-thing or simply laid down, and the gage levelled from any position. On uneven surfaces, where the stand naturally rests on only three of its legs, it may be swung in the manner peculiar to the tripod, bringing the center of gravity within the triangle formed by the legs, thereby providing a firm set-up. Rubber stoppers under compression were found to give sufficient friction to hold the seat in the desired position.

Two Canadian mining companies, Noranda Mines, Ltd., and Wright-Hargreaves Mines, Ltd., have agreed to buy $500,000 worth of shares each in Anglo-American Exploration Ltd., controllers of thousands of acres of possible oil-rich land in southern Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Samuel Clarence Nickle, Sr., reported as possible president of the newly formed exploration company, said that $20 million in assets have been accumulated by the firm, mainly in the Williston basin in parts of the Dakotas and Montana, aid extending into Southern Manitoba and most of Saskatchewan. The M. A. Hanna Co. reported a record profit for the seventh consecutive year with total 1951 profit reaching $14,081. The company handled a record 16.8 million tons of iron ore in 1951, compared with 14.9 million tons in 1950. The company is also preparing to open four iron ore mines in the Lake Superior district which are expected to produce more than 5 million tons annually by 1954. The company built two new iron ore concentrating plants at Mesabi range mines in 1951,a with a third plant going into, operations soon.

The following resolution was passed by the Military Engineering Committee of New York on April 12, 1917. Copies are being sent to each member of Congress and to each of the five members in every State forming the committee representing, the five National engineering societies which carried on the industrial census under the direction of Howard Coffin. The Committee is urging every man to wire his Congressman and his Senator, asking him to do everything in his power to obtain favorable action by Congress on this resolution: Whereas in any large army to be created for the war, engineer troops will be needed in large numbers, and Whereas they should be officered by skilled engineers only, and Whereas the composition and training of such troops differ so much from the composition and training of non-technical troops that they should be organized under one central authority rather than under many scattered authorities. Now, therefore, be it resolved: That the members of the Senate and House of Representatives be requested to insist that all new units of engineer troops be organized and maintained by the War Department and not by the individual States.

ON p. 499 of the December issue Of MINING AND METAL-LURGY plans were announced for a memorial to en-gineers who died in overseas service during the World War and a gift to the University of Louvain on behalf of the engineers of America. In this connection it is proposed to erect a memorial tablet giving the names. of engineers who died in the foreign service. Members of the A. I. M. E. who gave their lives, so far as they are known, are listed below. It will be much appreciated if notice be given of any omissions and also if the name of some surviving relative be supplied in each case. Louis Baird, Lieut., Royal Field Artillery, British Army, killed on the battlefield, 1915. John H. Bellamy, Capt., Regimental Staff, 103rd Engi-neers, killed near Fismes, Aug. 9, 1918. Martin F. SOME statements have already been made to the Institute in reference to the cost of other departments of the above-named works, and some details have been given in tabular form.* For the purpose of the present paper it may be sufficient to say that this converting works is made up of three buildings, a cupolahouse, an engine-house, and a converting-house. The machinery and fixtures comprise two blowing-engines, two pressure-pumps, two five-ton converters, five hydraulic cranes, three pig-iron cupolas, four spiegel cupolas, two lifts for the cupolas, together with the usual arrangements of smaller parts. Every effort was made in the construction to combine efficiency of operation with durability, and the general course of the operation of the works during two and a half years seems to warrant the belief that the large outlay has been fully justified. • In the accompanying tabular statement all items on vouchers less than ten dollars, and all freight items have been omitted. * See Transactions of the. Coal Mine Health and Safety Act in December 1969, the most comprehensive law in the history of the coal mining industry went into effect. Hardly anyone will quarrel with the philosophy that all miners in the United States should be afforded equal protection under the law irrespective of the state in which they reside. Furthermore, it appears contrary to any sound judgment that a competitive advantage should appear to accrue to a mine operator because his operations are located in a state with less stringent (and costly) health and safety laws Yet it is recognized that the quality of state mine laws and inspection agencies has been extremely variable. Why, then, should there be such resentments over the passage of the Act? The Act was written In the highly emotionally charged atmosphere following the Consol No. 9 disaster: the technical expertise within the industry was discredited and largely ignored; and those directly involved in the writing of the Act were non- technical and largely nonmining people. The result was that the law incorporated certain requirements that were impossible to meet (automatic brakes are the classical example) and certain parts that were too ambiguous and consequently open to interpretation.

IT has been recognized that oxygen in minute quantities is extremely detrimental to the room-temperature ductility of molybdenum. Early fracto-graphic studies' of the cast metal indicated that oxides are formed preferentially at the grain boundaries. Additional verification of this preferential segregation has been obtained from internal friction studies on poly crystalline molybdenum (average grain diameter varied from 0.039 to 0.065 mm) and from observations of the effect of oxygen on specimens of extremely large grain size. Specimens A, B, and C, of 0.040 in. diameter commercial molybdenum wire (Lot FW 13-40) were heat treated in the vacuum furnace described by Few and Manning according to the specifications given in Table I. Internal friction studies of these specimens were carried out using a low frequency (approximately 1 cycle per second) torsional pendulum completely enclosed in a vacuum tank. As the pressure of oxygen in the heat treating atmosphere changed, the portion of the internal friction vs temperature curves ascribed to grain boundary relaxation changed correspondingly, Fig. 1. At the Bingham Canyon pit operated by Kennecott's Utah Copper Division, the demand for geology has recently grown and diversified so rapidly that it has necessitated a revolution in geologic mapping techniques. The most significant changes in method have been in the preparation of the base map and in the computer application of collected data. Formerly maps were prepared by surveying with a transit or plane table. Now, however, a photogrammetric map with a scale of l in. to 200 ft is prepared semiannually and updated continuously to keep pace with the removal of more than 350,000 tons of material a day. Larger-scale bases of areas with specific problems such as un- stable slopes are prepared with aerial and terrestrial photography and photo-mosaics. Note sheets designed for computer application speed the processing of data. The multiplying applications of geology at the Bingham mine now include studies of the effect of structure, rock type, and alteration on slope stability, the relationship of sulfide mineral distribution to concentrating results, the effect of rock and mineral types on waste dump leaching, and the requirements of a reliable internal source of silica flux for smelting, as well as many others.

During the year of 1940, wildcat wells were drilled in 32 counties of Mississippi; 85 wells in all. These were scattered over the state from the most northern county to the southern counties and from the Mississippi River on the west to the Alabama line on the east. Yazoo County, with 19, received the largest number. The average depth of all the wells was 5333 ft. The shallowest well completed as a dry hole was in Yalobusha County, aban-doned at 1392 ft. in the Selma. The deepest well drilled was in Scott County, abandoned at 10,365 ft. in the Lower Cretaceous Paluxy. G. C. Grasty drilled the Kentucky Lumber Company No. I well, sec. 7, T. 10 S., R. 10 E., Itawamba County, to a depth of 3530 ft. and bottomed his hole in the Ordivician. Tinsley Oil Field.—In the Tinsley oil field 104 wells were completed as producers during 1940. Five producing sands have been logged with a total average thickness of I57 ft. of oil sand.
