The group of four papers on ore dreseing read at the Butte meeting, all of them dealing with the recent developments at the Great Falls and Washoe plants of the Anaconda Company, form an extremely important contribution to the subject of ore dressing. It proves the efficacy of the new hindered-settling principles first brought out in a paper entitled Close Sizing Before digging' and later elaborated in a paper entitled Development of Hindered-Settling Apparatus: and it is the first large demonstration on this class of mill that has been made. It must be very gratifying to all mill men to have these papers at hand, charged with careful investigations and results pointing to the conclusions reached; the papers cannot fail to be a great help to every designer of mills and to mill men who are working on this class of concentration. The papers have dealt with their subjects so completely and have demonstrated every point from beginning to end in each case so thoroughly it leaves little for the commentator to say in the way of criticism. Therefore it seems best to him to confine himself to adding a few points of history which he believes will be interesting to the readers. Referring to the paper by Mr. Wiggin, and to the fact that the Richards hindered-settling pulsator classifier was turned down, the writer wishes to say that this classifier was the first of its kind that had ever been introduced, and since that time it has undergone great developments which he believes would overcome the difficulties encountered in the test,. In fact, there was one test made at Great Falls which with the Wilfley tables and vanners brought all the tailings down to 0.36 per cent. copper except the fine slime. In the recent litigation for the possession of franklinite by one party and of zinc-ore by the other party, it was shown by the evidence of experts familiar with the original condition of the outcrops that at Mine Hill a more or less disticctly defined layer of red zincore underlay the heavier and larger body of the franklinite, so-called ; this layer or bed of zinc-ore dipping under the franklinite upon the western cropping, while at Stirling Hill, two miles south, the conditions were apparently reversed, the zinc-ore overlying the franklinite. An explanation being required, it was shown, first, that at both places, at Mine Hill on the north and at Stirling Hill on the south, the ore-bed lies in a synclinal or trough-like fold with the red zincore under the franklinite; and secondly, that at Mine Hill, we see chiefly the outcrop of the western part of the folded bed and at Stirling Hill the eastern part; the Mine Hill cropping being on the western slope, and the Stirling Hill cropping on the eastern slope of the hill. Thus the ''back vein" at Stirling (the western outcrop) corresponds with the front-vein at Mine Hill, and, like it, has the red zinc-ore on the foot-wall, while the front-vein or eastern cropping at Stirling corresponds to the back-vein or eastern cropping at Mine Hill in the part of the bed generally known as the " buckwheat-field vein." If the ore-bed were continuous in one synclinal trough between the two localities, no further explanation would be required. But it is not so ; and the synclinal folds at both places pitch steeply to the north, bringing the beds to the surface in horseshoe-like curves at their southern ends or croppings, and carrying the beds far below the surface northwards. George Edward WebbeR, a member of the Institute since 1906, died in San Francisco, May 29,1922. Born in Dixmont, Me., in 1852, he went to California in 1857 where he lived until 1883 and received a thorough training in precious metal mining in the employ of his father and J. B. Haggin. In 1883, he went to the Black Hills, South Dakota, as superintendent of the Father DeSmit mine; later the Deadwood Terra also came under his management. These mines are now part of the Homestake Mining Co. In 1889, the Rothchilds asked Hamilton Smith to recommend an engineer to take the place of the late Henning Jennings, who had resigned from the El Calloo Mining Co., of El Calloo, Venezuela, in order that he might proceed to South Africa. Mr. Webber accepted the position, remaining there until 1893 when he returned to the United States on his way to Johannesburg, South Africa, where he had been appointed manager of the Crown Reef Mining Co., Ltd. Early in 1896, he became general manager of the Rand Mines, Ltd., and served in this capacity until 1911. During the latter part of this period, Mr. Webber was active in the greater amalgamations of H. Eckstein & Co., and it was largely on his advice that H. Eckstein & Co. carried out the negotiations preceding the formation of the Crown Mines, Ltd. On his retirement from South Africa, he returned to live in Ross Valley, near San Francisco, Cal. The Rand Mines, Ltd., of which Mr. Webber was general manager, was the largest company controlled by Wernher Beit, the leading London house interested in South Africa mining, whose local agents in Johannesburg were H. Eckstein & Co. This firm is now known as the Central Mining & Investment Corpn., and after the departure of Henning Jennings, Mr. Webber was the firm's most valued and confidential advisor and was very highly thought of in mining circles in South Africa. He was a ma of most upright and straightforward high character, plain spoken and sincere; and his recognized high character was one more qualification which aided his great success.

MUCH progress has been made in recent years in the theory and practice of making stainless steel. By effective utilization of oxygen for decar-burization and more suitable alloying agents, it has been possible to attain consistent production of very low-carbon stainless steel. In order to facilitate economical production of stainless steels, the Electro Metallurgical Co. has carried out an extended experimental program that has clarified some of the complex interrelations of temperature and composition under decarburizing and reducing conditions. These results'-:' have been founded in large part on small experimental heats, and in order to confirm their validity and significance under commercial conditions, a survey of stainless steel melting practice has been made with the cooperation of stainless steel producers. Conditions required for decarburization and associated oxidation of chromium, manganese, and iron have been fairly well established in relation to the beneficial effect of the highest practicable temperature. The recovery of chromium and manganese from highly oxidized slags by reduction with silicon has been indicated with somewhat less precision and this study has shown significant deviation in large commercial heats from the small experimental heats. In spite of an unsatisfactory degree of accuracy in estimating the conditions affecting reduction of metallic values, it has been possible to calculate a slag weight in reasonably good agreement with the results observed in large heats. While there still is much to be learned about both the qualitative and quantitative aspects of stainless steel melting, this survey has indicated the manner by which the efficiency of the production process may be measured. Oxidation Period In order to establish practices for the recovery of chromium and manganese from the slag the amounts of these metals oxidized should be known. Moreover, since reduction of oxidized chromium and manganese must necessarily be accompanied by similar reduction of iron, knowledge of the total quantity of metallics oxidized is essential. The relations between carbon, chromium, and temperature under oxidizing conditions were developed by Hilty in 1948.' While it had been realized previously that retention of chromium in the metal during carbon oxidation is favored by high temperatures, the Hilty relation provided quantitative information useful for evaluating melting procedures. For example, it was shown that decarburization to moderate carbon levels can be achieved while retaining substantial amounts of chromium. However, in decarburizing to the low-carbon level necessary for producing 0.03 pct maximum carbon stainless steel, very little chromium remains in the bath at the temperatures generally employed. For this reason, Hilty, Healy, and Crafts' later projected an extension of the chromium-carbon relation to the low-chromium region. Although this chromium-carbon-temperature relation defined the composition of a chromium steel bath at the end of the oxidizing period, it did not provide a direct means for estimating the total amount of metallic oxidation occurring during decarburization of a stainless steel heat. This subject was investigated by Crafts and Rassbach³ and, later, by Hilty, Healy, and Crafts" who demonstrated that metallic oxidation is a function of the chromium content of the initial furnace charge, the minimum carbon content attained, and the temperature. It was further demonstrated from data on 1-ton heats that an empirical relationship exists between the ratio of chromium plus manganese to iron in the slag (S) to the corresponding ratio of these components present in the metal bath. The following expression was derived to permit the calculation of the amount of metallics oxidized during decarburization of a given charge: W-2000 (Cr1 + Mn1)-(Cr2 + Mn2) 1 100s/s+1-(Cr3 + Mn2) where W is the pounds of chromium, manganese, and iron oxidized per ton of charge; Cr1, the percentage of chromium in the charge; Mn1, the percentage of manganese in the charge; Cr2, the percentage of chromium in the bath after oxidation; Mn2, the percentage of manganese in the bath after % Cr + % Mn oxidation; and S =%cr+ % Mn/%Fe in the slag after %Fe oxidation. In order to establish whether the slag ratios of commercial heats are consistent with those found in the experimental heats, the slag and metal analyses shown in Table I were evaluated. These data represent samples taken after the oxidation of two 1-ton and seven 15 to 25-ton heats of types 303, 304, and 304L stainless steel made in chromite, acid, and basic hearths. Fig. 1 illustrates that the results for the commercial heats correlate reasonably well with the relationship originally established for experimental 1-ton heats. Chemical squeeze treatments have been used to provide temporary relief from certain production problems. The chemical fracture-squeeze technique, combining the effects of a fracturing treatment and a squeeze operation, has been more successful than conventional squeeze operations. Knowledge derived from well stimulation and reservoir engineering research provides a means for predicting the theoretical effective life of such a treatment. Analysis of theoretical equations and concepts developed allows selection of improved treatment techniques based on specific formation conditioins. Theory used in this analysis was developed as an extension of previous electrical model studies made to establish the expected flow and pressure profiles adjacent to a fracture system. The chemical fracture squeeze technique can be utilized in the economic application of corrosion inhibitors, emulsion breakers and paraffin and scale inhibitors. Application of this technique is shown to be effective. The slow return rate of injected chemicals, controlled by the resultant flow profiles and treatment variables, permits extended periods of chemical effectiveness. Results of field treatments are given, showing that the concepts outlined above for chemical fracture-squeeze treatments are valid and that applying this technique can help alleviate many current production problems. INTRODUCTION Much progress has been made in the last 10 to 15 years in developing chemicals for use in stimulating wells, maintaining production and protecting well equipment from damage due to corrosion. Not too many years ago, some wells seemed to dry up or wear out. In many cases the wells were produced as long as possible without any attempt at maintaining productivity. Even with the advent of new and better stimulation techniques, a rapid decline in production was observed. Methods of removing and, in some instances, preventing damage have been developed. Among thosc factors responsible for uneconomical production are scale, paraffin, corrosion, bacteria, water blocks and emulsions. Soluble scale-prevention chemicals have been developed1,2 that can be placed in a formation along with frac- turing sand. As the water produces back across this bed, the solid material dissolves slowly and can provide long-term protection from scale. However, bottom-hole temperature and salinity of produced water vary widely and both these factors influence the rate of solubility. Scale inhibitor composition is also a controlling factor. Some of the solid material may be crushed, increasing the surface area exposed to water and increasing the rate at which it dissolves. Some of the material may never be contacted by water and can be lost. However, this type of treatment has been very successful in many instances and has helped maintain economical production for extended periods of time. Liquid scale inhibitors, which are more widely applicable and more stable, have been developed in recent years; however, because they are liquids, their use has been restricted to treatment down the annulus, using metering pumps to provide proper concentrations in the produced fluid. This has prevented use in wells containing packers, in dually completed wells and in gas-lift and flowing wells. Wells that operate with an open annulus may also experience severe corrosion problems due to introduction of oxygen. Paraffin inhibitors3 have been developed that can be fractured into a well as particulate solids to be slowly dissolved in the produced fluid. These materials are not usually effective in wells with a bottom-hole temperature in excess of 120F since solubility rate may be too fast if that temperature is exceeded or if aromatic content of the oils is unusually high. Corrosion inhibitors have been developed that can be fractured' into a well for long-term feedback, but development of a material with proper solubility or feed rate has been difficult. Corrosion inhibitors are available in many different forms. Liquids have been lubricated down the annulus or sticks or pellets dropped down tubing. Inhibitor squeeze treatments5 devcloped a few years ago led to development of inhibitors with particularly strong film-forming properties.6,7 This technique basically involves displacing a highly concentrated solution of the inhibitor into the formation through the tubing. Kerver and Hanson8 studied the adsorption properties of inhibitors on various types of formations. They showed that, even though the inhibitor was displaced radially into the true permeability, it could be produced back for a long period of time because of slow desorption from the rock. Methods developed for monitoring the return of these inhibitors generally have established 1 to 6 months as the effective limit before retreatment is necessary.9 Inhibitors displaced into the interstices of the formation sometimes cause emulsions that either hamper production or cause treating problems on the surface.

Stress corrosion cracking of two heats of 18 pct Ni maraging steel in rod form immersed in an aqueous solution of 0.6N NaCl at pH 2.2 has been studied on un-notched specimens stressed in a hard tensilf machite. Austenitizing temperature in the range 1830 to 1400 F has been shown to have a marked influence on the propensity to crack, the loulest austenitizing- temperature producing the greatest resistance to failure. In the nzosl susceptible conditions, the cracks followed the original austenile grain boundaries; but when tlze steels zcere heal treated to inproze their resistance to stress corrosion, the cracks becatne appreciably less branched and slzouqed significant tendencies to become trans granular. Electron metallography of the steels indicated the presence of snzall particles, possibly of titanium carbide, along- the prior austenite grain boundaries and these particles u:ere more readily detectable in the structures that were most susceptible to cracking. Crack propagation rates, which appeared to be dependent upon applied stress and structure, were usually in tlze reg-ion of 0.5 mm per hr and may, therefore, be e.xplained on tlze basis of a purely electrochetnical ,nechanism. However, there is some ezliderzce from fractography that crack extension may be assisted by ttlechanical processes. Anodic stit)zulation reduced the tiwe to fracture, although cathodic currents of small magnitudes delayed cracking-; further increase in cathodic current resulted in a sharp drop i,n fracture litne, possibly due to the onset of hydrogen ewbrittlement. THE use of the high strength maraging steels, with their attractive fracture toughness characteristics, is restricted because of their susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking in chloride solutions. Although this limitation has resulted in investigations of the stress corrosion susceptibilities of these steels, there have been few systematic studies aimed at defining the various parameters that determine the level of susceptibility. It is the case that the usual tests have been performed with the object of defining some stress or time limit, on unnotched or precracked specimens, within which failure was not observed,' but while such results may be of some use in design considerations, they are necessarily concerned only with the steels as they currently exist and not with their improvement to render them more resistant to stress corrosion failure. This omission may be considered unfortunate because the indications are that stress corrosion in maraging steels shows dependence on structure in following an intergranular path, and since experience with other systems of intergranular stress corrosion crack- ing is that susceptibility may be varied by modifying heat treatments, a similar effect may be expected with maraging steels. It is sometimes from such observations that a fuller understanding of the mechanism of stress corrosion crack propagation begins to emerge, leading in time to the development of more resistant grades of material. The present work was undertaken to study only one aspect of the influence of heat treatment upon the cracking propensities of the 18 pct Ni maraging steel, namely the effect of austenitizing temperature, although certain ancillary measurements and experiments have been undertaken. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Most of the measurements were made on a steel, A, having the analysis shown below, although a few results were obtained on a steel, B, having a slightly different composition. Both steels were supplied in the austenitized condition, A as 3/8-in-diam rod and B as 1/2-in.-diam rod. Cylindrical tensile test pieces were machined from the rods: the overal length was 2 1/2 in., the gage length 1 in. and the diameter 0.128 to 0.136 in. The stress corrosion tests were carried out with the specimens strained in tension in a hard beam testing machine, the necessary total strain being applied to the specimen over a period of about 30 sec, after which the moving crosshead was locked in position and the load allowed to relax as crack propagation proceeded; the load relaxation was recorded. The load was applied after the specimen had been brought into contact with the corrosive solution, the latter being contained in a polyethylene dish having a central hole through which the specimen passed, leakage being prevented by the application of a film of rubber cement. The specimen was in contact with the solution for over half of its gage length and the solution was exposed to the air during testing. The solution was prepared from distilled and deionized water to which NaCl was added, 0.6N, and the pH adjusted to 2.2 by HCl additions. The composition of the solution

Until within late years, the preparation of sulphurous ores for the blast-furnace has received comparatively little attention. After the first improvement made on the old style of heap-roasting and roasting between walls, there has followed an almost general adoption of the Gjers kiln or some modification thereof, and the majority of iron-masters have seemed perfectly satisfied with so much progress. However, the Westman kiln was developed in Sweden, and other gas-roasters for sulphurous ores have been since constructed. They are in use on the continent of Europe and in America to a limited extent. The following experiments were made in order to furnish additional information as to the proper conditions for the elimination of sulphur from ores where it is present as sulphide of iron, FeS2 I desire here to acknowledge the Kindness of Dr. Franklin Menges, of the laboratory of Pennsylvania College, at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, for lending his valuable aid in carrying out a part of these experilnents and analyses. In the first series of these experiments, pure, roughly-pulverized pyrites crystals were used, containing 53.42 per cent. of' sulphur. They were made with a view to determine the effect on pyrites, of heat alone, in various degrees of intensity and duration, air being altogether excluded. The heats at a low temperature were made in glass combustion-tubes, sealed at the end, where the pyrites to be tested were placed, and with only a small opening at the opposite end. Although not allowing circulation, this arrangement still permitted a part of the evolved sulphur to escape. The heats at high temperatures were made in Hessian and graphite crucibles, tightly luted, every precaution being taken to exclude air. The temperatures attained are given approximately, and are as nearly correct as it was possible to estimate them, using Pouillet's scale as a guide.

The remarkable strides which have been made in recent years in the art of petroleum refining are not fully apparent until we attempt to compare the scientific status of the industry today with the basic conditions existing a decade or so ago. The spotlight has played so strongly on the development of cracking that many of the wonderful steps brought about in other departments have crept upon us unawares. A number of causes have contributed to this highly accelerated rate of progress. Constant effort by both companies and individuals to obtain the honors and prizes rewarding new discoveries has played its usual important part in our industry as in others. Competition has applied its continuous pressure on the refiner to reduce costs and losses and increase the proportionate yields of the higher-valued fractions. Advances in the engineering professions and growth in chemistry and allied sciences have contributed much. But there are other factors which deserve particular mention. The rapid development of the internal combustion engine, with the rigorous quality requirements and large quantity consumption of both fuel and lubricants has been a tremendous influence in adding impetus to natural progress. The teaching of petroleum principles and practices in many of our best universities and technical schools, and the calling into the industry of ever greater numbers of scientifically trained men to supplement the efforts of the practically trained operators, as well as to apply at close hand the fundamentals of science as a life work, has had and is having an incalculable influence. Important Improvements Let us consider briefly some of the most important improvements: First, distillation, which constitutes the greatest single phase of refinery operations, even with cracking excluded; that phase of distillation being handled as an individual subject in this symposium. Today we are distilling crude oil and redistilling by-products at a rate very much faster than was possible with the lesser knowledge of the art which we possessed

METALLIC manganese was first produced in 1773, by Sven Rinmann, a Swedish mineralogist. In 1799 William Reynolds, of Ketley, England, obtained a patent on the use of manganese dioxide in the manufacture of steel, and in 1808 an English patent was granted to John Wilkinson covering the use of manganese ore, or manganiferous ore, as an addition to iron ore in the blast furnace for the production of a superior grade of pig iron. Karsten showed in 1816 that manganese increased the hardness of iron without decreasing its malleability or toughness, while it caused pig iron to be more white in fracture and more fusible. The first practical application of manganese to steel-making, however, is attributed to Josiah Heath who discovered in 1839 (less than 90 years ago) that manganese conferred upon steel the properties of being more easily worked and welded under the hammer. When Bessemer invented the pneumatic process of steel-making which now bears his name he was at first successful because, as it afterward developed, he was using. a Swedish pig iron high in manganese. When his supply of this material ran out, he used a low-manganese pig from English sources and failed signally to produce a steel which could be rolled, while his Swedish licensees were continuing their successful application of his method. And it was not until Robert Mushet, in 1856, suggested the addition of manganese in the form of spiegeleisen to the molten product of the converter that success again came to Bessemer. In 1866, William Siemens patented the use of ferro-manganese as an addition to molten steel to counteract the bad effects of sulfur. It was in 1888, that Robert Hadfield published at some length his account of the effect of manganese as an alloying element in steel and described the unique properties of the now famous Hadfield manganese steel containing about 12 to 14. per cent. manganese and 1.25 per cent. carbon.

A high degree of accuracy is often required in mine-surveying, in order that expensive mining work may not be misdirected. The making of underground connections by drifts or shafts located as the result of surveys presents a crucial test of correctness not usually involved in any other class of surveying. In view of these considerations, the present notes and description of a survey made in June, 1890, for the San Francisco shaft of the New Almaden quicksilver-mines, may be of interest to members of the Institute who are surveyors. The purpose of this survey was to locate on the surface a vertical 2-compartment shaft (3.5 by 7 ft.), to connect with another vertical shaft, of practically the same size, which had been sunk a number of years before from an adit-level about 240 ft. vertically below the surface, to a deeper, so-called 600-ft. level. It will be seen, of course, that the most important matter was to secure an exact coincidence in vertical line, so that the resulting continuous vertical shaft from the surface should have no offset or irregularity at the point of junction between its two parts. The levels were of less importance; but, as the hoisting-works were to be placed in position and the new shaft permanently timbered from the start, its correct alignment was an essential requirement. The important features of the work, therefore, were the methods used in determining with certainty : 1. That the shaft was located in the right place in a general way; 2. That the ordinary inaccuracies of linear and angular measurements were so reduced as to insure correctness of location within certain defined and allowable limits. Instruments.—Thc instruments used were: a Buff and Berger transit-theodolite, with a 6-in. horizontal plate, reading to 10 seconds; a Heller and Brightly Y-level; a Chestermán steel tape, graduated in tenths and hundredths of a foot; and New York leveling-rods, graduated to thousandths of a foot.

The original basis for the search for oil in Great Britain was described last year.t During 1937 the exploratory drilling by the D'Arcy Exploration Company, Ltd. has been continued. Three wells have been completed in the south of England and a fourth is nearing completion. In addition, test wells are now being drilled in Scotland and East Yorkshire. Southern England The test well on the Portsdown structure, which at the end of 1936 was drilling in the Lower Lias at 5792 ft., entered the Triassic at 6540 ft. and was completed in that formation at a depth of 6556 ft., without encountering further indications of petroleum. The Henfield well encountered the Lias at a depth of approximately 4090 ft., and after drilling 800 ft. of an argillaceous development of that formation entered a series of marls, breccias and conglomeratic limestones of the Carboniferous. Drilling was suspended at a depth of 5105 ft., in the latter formation. The consistently impermeable nature of the strata encountered in the Portsdown and Henfield test wells focused attention on the desirability of obtaining shore-line conditions of the Jurassic. With this end in view the Kingsclere anticline, a few miles south of Newbury in Berkshire, was selected for a next test. The Kingsclere well has now reached a depth of 5032 ft. in the Lower Lias and has encountered a full development of the Jurassic. With the exception of the Portland sand, which has a slightly greater porosity, and the Corallian, in which relatively great thicknesses of impervious limestone were met, conditions of sedimentation have been found to be comparable with those of the earlier wells. Small traces of petroleum have been found in cuttings and cores, but formation tests carried out at frequent intervals have yielded no flow of oil. In order to test the Corallian, from which series an outcropping oil sand had been found, a test well was drilled in a near-by anticline at Poxwell in Dorset. One of the most interesting of all the subjects required of persons studying the different facets of coal mining is coal mine gases. Some mine gases have been a real problem since the very beginning of underground mining and in the early days there was insufficient knowledge to really cope with them. The history of mining shows that until the last 50 years, work was done primarily by the hand methods which are primitive by today's standards. Miners had to contend with gases without the aid of enclosed lighting, permissible mine machinery, sophisticated testing devices, and high pressure ventilating fans. In early days the miners were not educated as to the different mine gases nor did they have the technical equipment to determine the actual composition of the deadly atmospheres they encountered. They simply applied a descriptive term to each gas or mixture of gases depending on its effect on a person or the surrounding atmosphere. The gases or mixtures of gases were then referred to as "damps" which was probably derived from the German word "dampf," meaning vapors or gases. The more common damps encountered were as follows: Blackdamp A condition of the atmosphere where a miner's light would be extinguished and in which breathing would be difficult, sometimes even resulting in suffocation. An atmosphere deficient in oxygen and which could contain a combination of any of the mine gases. Firedamp Flammable mixtures of methane and air which would either burn or explode when ignited. White Damp A mixture of gases containing carbon monoxide.

ALUMINUM alloys, in common with most other metallic alloys, exhibit slight density changes with variations in temper achieved by heat-treatment, which usually are the result of the variation with tem-perature of the solid solubility of the various alloy constituents in the solvent metal. Changes in density are, of course, most marked in conditions that exhibit the maximum variation in solid solubility of the constituents. In aluminum alloys these conditions usually prevail when alloys are quenched from just below the melting point and are subsequently reheated to some lower temperature. Since commercial heat-treatments may be of this type, the density changes, although small (of the order of 0.3 per cent which may be compared with the density change of about 1.5 per cent involved in the transformation, at ordinary temperatures, of gamma to alpha iron during the hardening of steel), may in some specific applications necessitate quantitative con-sideration. This phenomenon has been investigated extensively in the laboratories of the Aluminum Company of America over a period of years. A number of investigators1-5 have observed and measured the density changes accompanying the heat-treatment of aluminum alloys. In general, these changes have not been directly translated to dimensional changes and their significance has been overlooked to some extent by the practical user of aluminum alloys. It is the purpose of this paper to consider some practical aspects of these density and dimensional changes. These density changes were given some consideration in 1917 in connection with the use of aluminum-alloy pistons for aircraft engines. The subject of this paper is particularly appropriate, since Daniel C. Jackling was active in early exploitation of taconites on the Mesabi Range and contributed greatly to their later economic development. After his success in developing the low grade porphyries in the West he looked for more worlds to conquer, and so undertook the concentration of low grade taconites, from which he hoped to produce commercial ore. Mesabi Iron Co., organized in 1919, actually did produce merchantable sinter from taconites in 1922. The enterprise did not prove commercial at the time, as cost of production was high and the surplus of iron ore in the Lake Superior District already contributed to a low market price, but this same property has since been developed by Reserve Mining Co. The work done by Jackling had much to do with the success of this later venture. Iron ore was first discovered on the Marquette Range in Michigan in 1845. The first ore from this range came from the old Jackson mine in Negaunee in 1848. During these early years this property and others on the Marquette produced limited tonnages for transportation to Lower Lakes and for consumption by charcoal furnaces in the area, where a plentiful supply of hardwoods furnished the charcoal for iron smelting. The Marquette and other ranges tributary to Lake Superior did not produce much ore for transportation to Lower Lakes until the locks at Sault Ste. Marie were constructed, but from the time the first lock at the "Soo" was completed in 1855 these ores were transported through the locks to consumer centers in the East. The Marquette Range has a history of continuous production from 1848 to the present day.

Increases in the price of gold starting about six years ago, and rapid fluctuations since then, have created a substantial popular interest in the noble metal. Gold prospecting had been at a low ebb since the end of World War II in most of the United States, except for a flurry of activity in Nevada after the Carlin and Cortez discoveries. The last few years, however, have seen a great awakening of interest in gold exploration as well as an opportunity for education for many explorationists in the geology and other vagaries of gold deposits. The writers have participated over the last few years in a search for gold deposits throughout the United States. This search was greatly influenced by the geologic studies of Dr. William Spence at the Haile gold mine in South Carolina, as reported in a companion paper. Spence's studies resulted in definition of a geologic model that has proven useful in a number of other geologic environments in the United States. These programs were all carried out under the auspices of Cyprus Mines Corp. and permission by Cyprus to present these results is gratefully acknowledged. The writers, however, reserve for themselves all responsibility for the results and conclusions. The exploration program to be described began in the southeastern United States. Spence's studies provided a reasonable basis for interpreting and understanding the geology of the Haile deposit, and also provided a means for predicting additional occurrences. This concept was then expanded to other gold occurrences in the Piedmont, and became an effective tool for evaluating other prospects. Finally, it became evident that the concept could be applied in some western gold districts. The following discussion will then include descriptions of other Piedmont examples and a few western districts that also appear to fit the pattern.

The major oil discovery in 1938 for Wyoming was the General Petroleum Corporation's So. 1 Government, C.NW.SE. of sec. 21-35N-77W, on the Cole Creek structure in central Wyoming, 14 miles northeast of Casper. This well found commercial oil production in basal Cloverly sand (Lakota) at 7978 ft. and was completed on May 28, 1938, at 8019 ft., 3 ft. in Morrison shale. It had an initial produrtion of 10 bbl. of oil an hour but at the end of a 7-day test made 336 bbl. of oil in 24 hr. During 1938, the well produced a total of 23,161 bbl. of oil. It has been agitated about 10 days out of each month to provide fuel for lease and drilling operations, the balance of the time it has been shut in pending the completion of the second well on the structure. The Cole Creek oil is of intermediate base and has an A.P.I. gravity of 32.7". The record of the well contains the "tops" listed in the accompanying tabulation. Introduction THE use of roll scale in the Bessemer process dates back, to the "best of our knowledge, at least 20 years. It was first used by the Ohio Steel Co.; Youngstown, Ohio (now the Ohio Works of the Carnegie Steel Co.) under the direction of Sam, MacDonald, Superintendent of the Bessemer Department at these works. Two 10-ton vessels and one blowing engine capable of blowing one heat at a time were employed. The object of using the scale was to -shorten the length of the blow; or in other words, to increase the production with the same equipment. Various means were tried out for introducing the roll scale into the bath of molten iron: It was shoveled into the vessel before the heat was charged, so that the metal would flow over the scale; it was shoveled into the bath after the vessel was turned up; it Was dumped into the empty iron ladle by the wheelbarrow-load, and at times wars dumped on top of the molten metal in the iron ladle. But the practice of introducing the scale into the iron ladle had to be abandoned on account of danger from explosions and of skulling the -ladles. It was soon learned that the proper place to charge the scale was in the empty vessel, so that when the molten iron was poured into the vessel it flowed over the scale, causing a considerable reaction to take place before the heat was turned up. Eventually, cylindrical chutes similar to those now in use were installed. Into these chutes the scale is dumped and carried into the empty vessel. Before this convenient means of introducing the scale was adopted, the Ohio Works had satisfactorily demonstrated that roll scale would increase production, by blowing 107 heats in one 12-hr. turn (1,087 tons) with one blowing engine, blowing one heat at a time; whereas, prior to the use of scale, the best practice at these works was about 80 heats under the same conditions.

WHEN miners in the interior coal fields of the United States began the practice of blasting the coal without undercutting, or what is known as "shooting off the solid," many explosions resulted, some of them of great extent and 'violence, and attended with large loss of life. One of the means adopted for preventing this large loss of life, though not preventive of explosions, was to employ shot firers to discharge the shots when all the other employees had gone out of the mine at the end of the day's shift. This system still prevails in most of the Central and Southwestern mines. Following the disaster at Winter Quarters mine, Utah, May 1, 1900, in which 200 lives were lost, a system of firing shots electrically from outside and when the men were out of the mine was adopted at the mines of the Utah Fuel Co.1 This system has also been used in France in certain mines that are subject to instantaneous outbursts of carbonic acid gas. These outbursts generally occurred at shot-firing time, on account of the blasts releasing the gas held in crevices under high pressure. The system was also adopted at a number of other mines in Utah, at the Cokedale mine, Colorado, at the Dawson mines, New Mexico, and in some mines of the Tennessee Coal, Iron & Railroad Co. in the Birmingham Ala. district; and more recently in certain mines in Iowa and Kansas. At first there was considerable trouble from misfires, and in a few instances from premature firing, while men were in the mine, through the shot-firing lines becoming crossed with power lines. Fortunately, however, no loss of life resulted from such premature firing within the knowledge of the writers, and latterly this danger has been reduced to a minimum by certain measures of precaution.
