This part of the symposium deals with the problems encountered by the consumer of nonferrous scrap, that is, the smelter and refiner who melts the selected scrap items and produces foundry ingots of specified compositions or billets for rolling or extrusion in nonferrous mills. The fundamental problems are quite similar for all secondary' nonferrous metals. Gases and vapors are being safely stored in caverns constructed in salt formations. The storage of gas is cost competitive with other methods of gas storage and offers many advantages. Storage can be designed for high gas recovery rates and many operating caverns allow gas recovery rates in excess of 300 million cubic feet per day. Fenix & Scisson has constructed or consulted on many of these storage projects and presents some case histories beginning with the conversion of a bedded salt cavern to gas storage in 1961. THE bellows are important and necessary agents in most melting processes. In addition to seeing that these have sufficient soft cloth, extend far and wide, and are of good design, including good valves and good long tubes, and that they cannot break and lose the air received, it is very important to give attention to their installation so that they may easily effect their purpose. This paper describes a computer program which calculates material balances for complex steady-state material flow circuits encountered in mineral processing. The program determines mass flows in the various process streams of a flowsheet from multicomponent analytical data obtained from samples of the streams. The program, Metallurgical Balance System (MBS), has been used extensively in treating Pilot plant test data, in production evaluation and control, and in plant design. The program performs well even on ill-conditioned data. Input to the program is easily accomplished by unskilled personnel and the output appears in well-formatted tables.

The mineral-rich oceans that have been described as "vast" and "nearly inexhaustible" have to date remained virtually untapped. Mineral Dependencies Trigger US Interests A lack of known domestic reserves of selected commodities and a climbing mineral trade deficit that reached a record $19 billion in 1974 are two factors that have sustained US interests in deep-ocean and offshore mining over recent years. But the lack of federal leadership in formulating ocean mining policy is said to have significantly discouraged the major capital commitments necessary to develop these resources.

The deformation of a discontinuous rock is a sum of individual translations, rotations, and strains of the component blocks. These produce opening and slip between blocks along the discontinuities. Rather than attempting to analyze such deformations with a mathematical model representing the geometric and stress/strain properties of all points, for the back-calculation of observed displacements we have produced a novel approach to solve the inverse problem. Using a field of displacement measurements and a map of the system of discontinuities, the method, determines the intrablock and interblock motions by a least squares formulation. In this brief paper we address only two- dimensional formulations. However, computer codes have also been developed for three dimensional problems.

A FEW years ago a novel electric detonator known as the split-second or millisecond delay electric blasting cap was introduced for use in quarry blasting. Regular electric blasting caps fired in series may be depended upon to fire within a millisecond or so from the first to the last in a series. Regular delay electric blasting caps are provided that fire one period after the other period in intervals of 1/2 to possibly 1 l/2 sec. Most split-second or millisecond delays are designed to fire one period after the other period in possibly 25 to 50 millisecond intervals. The ear is not capable of detecting time intervals of this magnitude.

This is an outstanding paper on comminution theory and represents a considerable advance in mathematical formulation. It clears the way for a discussion that should ultimately decide whether the work index should be considered as a parameter according to the Third Theory or as a constant. In the empirical differential equation dE = C dx/xn either C or n must be treated as a variable to satisfy known crushing and grinding conditions. The author has chosen the exponent n as the variable, with C as a constant.

A meeting of the New York Local Section of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, in joint session with the American Electrochemical Society, was held at the Engineering Societies Building, 29 West 39th Street, New York City, Nov. 20, 1913. Mr. Lawrence Addicks, Chairman of the American Electrochemical Society, presided at the meeting, in conjunction with Mr. Louis D. Huntoon, Chairman of the New York Local Section of the American Institute of Mining Engineers. The Chairman announced the subject to be discussed it the meeting as follows: As this is a joint meeting of the New York Sections of the Electro-chemical Society and the Institute, Mr. Huntoon has insisted that I share the responsibilities of the chair to the extent of introducing the speakers.

* A demonstration pipeline for transporting coal will be constructed by Pittsburgh Consolidation Coal Co, at the Georgetown strip-mining operation near Cadiz, Ohio, The 12-in., 17,000-ft line, special crushing and preparation equipment, and pumps especially designed for the operation will cost about $550,000. A slurry of fine coal and water will be fed into the line and moved through it under pressure. * Sulphur resources in the U.S. are being rapidly exhausted with no new major deposits being found, This common mineral may become one of the most strategic items during the next five years. Recovery of sulphur from pyrites is being considered in case of an emergency. Already the British have adopted stringent measures to conserve sulphur supplies.

(Royal School of Mines), will shortly proceed to the appointment of a Professor of Metallurgy. This important Chair has been filled in the past by such eminent metallurgists as John Percy, Sir William C. Roberts-Austen, and others. A large manufacturing company having two iron foundries, blast furnace, etc., requires the services of a chemist, metallographist, and metallurgical engineer qualified to give advice on cast iron practice, and to prescribe remedies for difficulties often met with in the usual iron foundry. The position of converter blower at a side-blow Bessemer steel casting plant is vacant.

A combination of industrial and laboratory data is used to explain the interrelationships between operating parameters and cementation plant performance as measured by copper recovery and iron consumption. The chemical factors considered are the relative concentrations of copper and ferric ions in solution, acid concentration, the possible buffering action of other dissolved salts and solution temperature. The effects of flow conditions, solution oxidation, the presence of metallic copper and retention time are also considered. Based on the various relationships developed, possibilities for plant optimization are discussed.

The report of the Nominating Committee was presented and is given in this same Bulletin. A petition was received for new requirements for membership in the Institute and was ordered to take the statutory course. A petition was received for the establishment of a Tulsa Section of the Institute and was referred to a committee to report on the territory. Thirty-six Members, two Associates, and two Junior Members were elected. The status of two Junior Members was changed to Member.

A special war committee of the Engineering Council has been appointed to assist other committees of the United Engineering Societies having to do with the development of the arts and sciences related to warfare. One of the principal functions of this additional committee is to pass upon the probable value of new inventions. The new committee has established headquarters' in the rooms of the Naval Consulting Board in New York City, and has received the franking privilege of the Post Office Department.

Those in charge of the Second Pan-American Financial Conference say that the engineering profession will be well represented at the Janu-ary conference in Washington. Latin American engineers are more closely connected with important industrial projects and have a greater command in matters pertaining to the developments on which they are working than is the case in the United States. Our own engineering profession may. therefore do well to study the Latin-American plan of cooperation between capital and the engineers.
