THE sixteenth annual meeting of the Woman's Aux¬iliary, A. I. M. E., was held Tuesday morning, Feb. 16, at the Engineering Societies Building. The meeting was well attended, there being 99 registered from the metropolitan area and 78 from the sections throughout the United States. Mrs. Sharpless, the secretary, read the minutes of the annual meeting held a year ago, after which Mrs. Bassett, the president, gave her address of welcome. Mrs. Bassett said in part: "I would like, at this time, to welcome you all to this, our sixteenth annual meeting, and to express my appreciation to all the national officers and members of the board of directors for their loyal support and for the excellent work done by the chairmen of sections and their members. It is with much pleasure that I look back upon my visits with the sections in Washington, Arizona, Northern and Southern California, Chicago, Colorado, Western Pennsylvania and Utah before I assumed the office of president. During the last year I have much enjoyed meeting with the sections in Boston, Washington and New York. It is our duty to see that the achievement for 1932 be equal to that of the year that has just passed."

As the radical element has secured control of the various local printers' unions of New- York City, 250 magazines have temporarily suspended publication rather than grant their demands. The actions of. these local unions have been repudiated by the officers of the different inter-national unions, who are seeking in every way to carry out their agree-ments with the publishers. The charters of the local pressmen's and feeders' unions have been revoked by the international officers and new local unions are being formed. Members of the typographical union are not, as yet, directly affected by the strike, but many of them are taking "vacations," which accomplishes the same purpose as the strike but without the odium. The Engineering and Mining Journal, with true engineering spirit refusing to admit insuperable obstacles, is sending out a two-page printed market bulletin, together with two typewritten pages, making an an-nouncement of its predicament and giving brief items of mining news. Thus s brought home to the members of the mining profession in a very direct way the pernicious results of unrestrained control of labor organi-zations-by foreign and un-American elements. No sermon on this sub-ject is required, as the facts themselves are sufficiently eloquent.

Originally presented before the American Electroplaters Society, the basic contents o f his message are a warning that traditional trust-busting and mineral shortage concepts have been outdated by the broadened scope of competition. But to the miner, stoic before the cyclical predictions of feast and famine, traditional markets aren't getting any easier.

One of the limitations of the 3-dimensional Lerchs-Grossmann pit optimisation algorithm has been the difficulty in calculating an optimum pit with variable wall slopes. The difficulties have been related to establishing various wall slopes without changing the sizes of the blocks used in the normal computation, but still retaining an optimum solution.

Invasion experiments were run on Berea sandstone cores to get laboratory measurements of resistivity and saturation profiles characteristic of water and oil sands invaded by mud filtrate. Injection rates were as low as 1.13 cm/D, and the cores were 30 to 36 in. long, cut parallel to the bedding planes. In the water-sand case, the resistivity profiles revealed the existence of an extensive transition zone between flushed and uncontaminated zones. In the linear geometry of the experiment, the width of the transition zone increased as the square root of the injected fluid volume. For the oil-sand case the core was prepared by displacing the formation water with kerosene to minimum water saturation. During the subsequent invasion experiment. oil saturation was measured directly by means of an oil-soluble radioactive tracer, and resistivity profiles along the core were taken at the same time. These data were interpreted in terms of an oil-water front, followed by a formation water bank, a zone of mixed waters, and finally, invaded mud filtrate near the borehole. Micro-fingering and capillarity seemed to affect considerably the resistivity profiles observed in the invaded oil-sand experiment. Beyond the regular conductive annulus or "low zone", it was found that a resistive "anti-annulus" could also be formed. As a result of these experiments, some simplified invasion profiles have been accepted and are being used in Grand Slam* interpretations. INTRODUCTION The importance of the mud filtrate-invaded zone in interpreting electrical logs has long been recognized.',* In trying to account for its effect, only very simple models of the resistivity profiles in the radial direction from the borehole have been used. In fact, most log interpretation charts have been based on resistivity models consisiting of two media of uniform resistivity (R, and R,) abruptly separated at the diameter of invasion. Such a clean separation of the media of different resistivities seems unrealistic, since flushing may not be perfect and may vary with radial distance into the formation.3** The nature of the transition zone, when it is within the radius of investigation of the surveying devices, may affect the log readings. Campbell and Martin' verified that a conductive annulus containing a high percentage of formation water may be formed when mud filtrate invades an oil-bearing sand. Interpretations which are to include the effect of such an annulus require the addition to the model of a conductive zone located at the outer rim of the invaded zone.' Using the Buckley-Leverett relations,6 aturation profiles may be derived, from which resistivity profiles can be calculated. Results of such computations by K. S. Kunz and J. H. Moran were given in a paper by Dumanoir. Tixier and Martin,7 and led to the construction of log interpretation charts which were based on a representation with three media of resistivities R, R0 and R1. Fig. 1 shows a schematic representation of a resistivity profile which includes an annulus. Campbell and Martin realized that, during the invasion of an oil sand, both capillarity and mixing would contribute to rounding of the profile shown in Fig. 1. A method has been developed to remove calcite from the leaching circuit in the uranium in situ leaching system. The process involves injecting the leachate and a pH control agent tangentially into an inverted cone reactor containing calcite seed catalyst. The leachate can be treated at high throughput to obtain clear effluent containing 5 ppm or lower Ca. Both lime and ammonia are effective pH control agents and consumed according to stoichiometry.

A small group of members of the Institute headed by W. H. Shockley, has insistently demanded that the Institute submit to the members for letter ballot the question of our using in our publications and corre-spondence certain so-called "simplified spellings." The principal argu-ment in favor of this proposal is written by Mr. Shockley and will be submitted in full to the membership for ballot. It rests chiefly on the desirability of saving the time of school children in the learning of the spelling of the English language. A sample of correspondence had with one of the gentlemen on this subject is given herewith in order that members may see what the correspondence and publications of the Institute would look like if we adopted the proposals. This sample was chosen at random: "Onse I condemd the report ov a president of the Institute. He did not pruve his case even on paper-"a hot air profet," I sed. Time has pruved he was." "I rote yu about the muvement to better the spelling in the Institute Bulletin, etc., neglecting to say some things that I mite hav said and things hav happened since which no member ov a democratically governed society shoud stand without protest."

(written discussion??.-It has been our experience, especially in cupro-nickel, that manganese has been very beneficial, not only, as stated by Mr. Braid, in removing sulfur, but also for its property of reducing oxides, thus making the metal more fluid, and enabling it to be poured at a lower temperature; this, in turn, prevents softening of the graphite pots and the absorption of carbon. It also acts very effectively in keeping the carbon in solution in the cupro-nickel, in the combined form. However, in the case of cupro-nickel, to obtain all these benefits it has been found necessary to keep the manganese content as near 0.25 per cent. as possible. Manganese also is very effective in diminishing the amount of blisters in cupro-nickel. So far as I am aware, both from personal experience and from the experience of others who have been engaged in the manufacture of nickel-silver and cupro-nickel, manganese used either in the form of pure metal or as manganese-copper alloy (30 Mn, 70 Cu) gives better results than any other flux. While this may seem a strong statement, manganese is the natural flux for nickel-silver and cupro-nickel.

As it is the plan of the War Department to return 400,000 soldiers a month during the next four months, Colonel Arthur Woods, Special Assistant Secretary f War, has requested the Engineering Societies to assist the Government by soliciting their members to advise the respective societies, at the earliest possible moment, f any place where companies can employ returned soldiers. This request applies not only to the professional men who are returning but also to the miners, mechanics and other skilled labor among the enlisted men. Army discipline has not only made these men think more quickly but also more willing and obedient workers. The whole training has been conducive to regular habits and clean living steadying these men and fitting them to meet emergencies more quickly and has instilled more loyalty to their superiors and to their jobs. Further, the military instruction they have received has increased the men's powers f concentration. The War Department cannot too strongly bring before the employers of skilled labor the fact that the employment f discharged soldiers will be advantageous to the employer and economically beneficial to the country. The following is a list of the vocations of the men who are now returning:

Plans have been completed with only details to be arranged for the first Metals Branch Conference in the Northwest. The two day meeting will be held jointly with the Industrial Minerals Div. on Friday and Saturday, May 9 and 10, 1952, at the Davenport Hotel in Spokane, Wash. For, some time the metals activities in this area have been neglected. Expansion of metal producing and fabricating industries in Washington and neighboring states has brought sufficient interest to insure the success of such a meeting. A committee has been hard at work for several months. Nonferrous extractive metallurgy men will find an extensive program in the April issue of JOURNAL OF METALS. Sessions for iron and steel producers, physical metallurgists, and educators will make the Metals Branch picture complete. Metals Branch members residing in Washington, British Columbia, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Nevada, and Utah, or who can be in the Northwest at this time should make plans now to attend. A Metals Branch luncheon is planned for Friday and a dinner jointly with the Industrial Minerals Div. is planned for Saturday according to F. R. Morral, metallurgist with the metallurgical research div. of Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corp., P. O. Box 1451, Spokane, Wash.

IN order to defend batteries or to make a stratagem at night in making an assault it is useful to tie certain tubes of paper on wooden forms to the ends of the lances of the cavalry, or on the ends of the pikes of infantrymen. These are made in the form , of rockets or squibs, half a braccio or more long, and are full of coarse gunpowder in which are mixed pieces of Grecian pitch, sulphur, grains of common salt, iron filings, crushed glass, crystalline arsenic, and the like. Their very shape gives a hold at the foot, and they should be well packed and full. Then, having put in a good fuse and turned the fire-emitting end toward the enemy and having tied it well to the lance or pike, at the proper time cause them to burn as you wish. From the thing made in this way you will see issue a fearful very hot tongue of fire more than two braccia long, full of explosions and horror. This works much better if used when the weather is mild or when you are aided by the wind. This thing serves very well in battles at sea as well as in its effects on land.

The School of Mineral Industries is dedicated to education in mineral conservation and research by which the means may be found to make conservation effective. This includes diligent search for mineral truths and the energetic discovery, complete recovery, and maximum utilization of irreplaceable mineral resources. Standards of living depend upon two factors: human resources-intelligence, imagination, initiative, know-how, work; and natural resources-plants, animals, and minerals, including water, air, soil, heat and light from the sun, and all other such resources that are useful to man. Human relationships have not kept pace with scientific achievement; as a result man, in desperation, wittingly, premeditatively sacrifices freedom for security. Many natural resources, through overproduction, mismanagement, and greed, have definitely moved over into the exhausted or exhaustible category. The United States cannot maintain present standards of living on an agricultural economy alone, and serious harm can ensue if there are marked disproportions in numbers and relationships between city and rural populations. The most materialistic New Yorker must see virtue in bucolic loveliness. The United States is rated wasteful and inconsistent most of the time. It does not make sense to dole out through the keyhole what a wage earner can bring through the open door; to raise wages to lower the cost

The subject article is an excellent comparison between two potential oxidants, molecular oxygen and hydrogen peroxide, as used in the Palangana field at the time of the trials. The tests showed no advantage to using hydrogen peroxide; however, it would be unwise to generalize that the experience in these trials was universally true. During the time of the work cited, extremely high levels of an unusual impurity were recycling in the lixiviant, which substance was a catastrophically destructive catalyst for peroxide. Since this material was not removed before recycle, it was not surprising that much of the peroxide fed was decomposing in the feed piping and never made contact with the uranium mineralization. Under these conditions, indeed, peroxide showed no improvement over oxygen. This is, however, perhaps the most adverse environment encountered to date in US in-situ uranium leaching. In other operations, peroxide has proved advantageous where two factors have been exploited: 1.Despite the tendency for Hz02 to decompose to water and oxygen in the in-situ leach environment, its higher redox potential before decomposition has provided higher leach rates. In some formulations, overloading beyond the O2 saturation equivalent with peroxide has allowed higher oxidant levels, and higher leaching rates, when overloading with molecular O2, led to vapor-locking.
