The dynamic simulation of a gravity separation vessel (a high throughput classifier) has been developed. The feed slurry was assumed to contain light (oil droplets) and heavy (mineral solids) particulates of various size. The feed slurry was characterized by the particle size distribution of both the light and the heavy particles. The equations describing the slip velocity for each specie and those defining the time variation of each specie concentration were solved implicitly using Runge-Kutta algorithm. The dynamic simulation was capable of predicting the movement of the froth layer and the density variation of the under- flow. Field data are in agreement with the simulation model and it is shown how this model could be used to develop a control strategy.

An evaluation of the operating performance of a recently designed pneumatic centrifugal classifier is presented. This classifier has been modified from a separate air and feed input design to an entrained solids in air feed input. The evaluation first required determining the size distributions for the three streams (feed, fine, and coarse). Using size distribution data and mass flow rates, a size selectivity curve was calculated for each operating condition tested. This curve, in turn, was characterized by appropriate selectivity parameters (i.e., the equiprobable or cut size, the sharpness index, and the apparent bypass values). The variation of these parameters with classifier operating conditions was examined. From these evaluations, the "best" operating conditions for the classifier were then determined.

IT is a well-known fact that the solubility of zinc compounds decreases when these compounds are roasted in contact with iron compounds, but descriptions of tests to quantitatively express the fact have not appeared in the literature. Possibly such an expression cannot be uniformly and exactly duplicated by different operators because of the variation in the personal equation. In a general way, however, the reactions between zinc compounds and iron compounds under roasting conditions will show a certain trend with changing conditions and the approximate quantitative expression of this trend appears reasonably well established by experimental work conducted for this purpose.

THE gravity concentrator of the Hecla Mining Co. was originally constructed in 1888 by the Milwaukee Mining Co., which was operating the Gem of the Mountains mine. It was purchased by the Hecla Mining Co. in 1900, and placed in operation 2 years later. This paper discusses the primary computer programs used by the Mine Safety and Health Administration's Bruceton Safety Technology Center to evaluate coal refuse disposal plans. These programs are currently being used by private consultants, government, and the coal industry for today's coal refuse disposal problems. This paper outlines five programs, their special features, and their importance in the design and construction of coal refuse disposal facilities. The purpose of the paper is to present the general steps necessary in the computer-modeling of each program. The programs that are discussed include BISHOP, STABL, RWE, DAMS2, and HEC-2, which cover the subject areas of slope stability, hydrographs, flood routing, and water surface profiles.

In U. S. underground mines concrete work is not widely used. Timber and steel are cheaper, and there are few serious water problems. But in the Union of south Africa men dig deeper, more persistently, and probably more profitably than anywhere else on earth. Some gold mines near Johannesburg are below the 10,000 level and employ as many as 35,000 natives on a single property. Underground substations, pump chambers, and air conditioning plants have capacity to serve small cities. The complexity and extent of underground operations and the heavy subsurface water flows, especially in the new Free State gold fields, require heavy in a Deep concrete installations.

The information given by Mr. Harder regarding the Chilean deposits is very welcome. Results of a research project on investment or lost wax casting will be presented. The project was concerned with various aspects of the process as they are typical for the production of jewellery from gold alloys. During these investigations testing methods for investment quality as well as for casting quality and the various process parameters were developed and charateristic defects as they occur in practice were traced back to their origin in the process. Investigated were various static casting and centrifugal casting methods in different atmospheres as well as vacuum casting in devices of different design. It was shown that independent of the method a close control of the many process parameters interfering with each other is essential for a quality casting.

AT the Pittsburg meeting of the Institute, in March, 1910, the death of Mr. Metcalf was announced, and Col. H. P. Bope, of Pittsburg, delivered in memory of him a brief but eloquent address, which, though expressing the sorrow of Mr. Metcalf's friends, and, in general terms,. the debt of gratitude which his country and his profession owed to him, was not intended to be a complete survey of his life and work. With Colonel Bope's permission, and with the aid of some of the statements in his address, I substitute for it, in our Transactions, this more detailed, yet still inadequate memorial. As Colonel Bope justly remarked, the men who could do justice to this theme-such men, as Jones, Chalfant, Bennett, Oliver, and Park-passed away before Metcalf, leaving him almost the last of the generation of great steel-makers who made Pittsburg the Sheffield of America, and who discharged a double function, as the rear-guard of the old metallurgical practice and the van-guard of the new. I knew many of them; would that I were better qualified to celebrate their achievements. William Metcalf was born Sept. 3, 1838, at Pittsburg, Pa., where his father, Orlando Metcalf, was an eminent member of the bar. At the age, of sixteen, he entered the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, at Troy, N. Y., from which he was graduated in June, 1858. Returning to his native city, he became an assistant engineer in the Fort Pitt Foundry, of which. he was made Superintendent in 1859. This famous establishment produced the largest castings and heaviest machinery then known in the United States;-and Mr. Metcalf's intense, intelligent and incessant study of his business prepared him as a manufacturer for a patriotic service to his country more valuable than, as a soldier, he could have rendered in the field. The call came in 1862, when the government needed, above all things, a supply of field, naval and siege artillery. The

Preparation for flotation begins with dragline mining, pumping, washing, screening, and desliming. Slimes, nominally -150 mesh material, constitute large quantities of phosphate and water which are a disposal problem. Older techniques involve sizing at about 35 mesh for separate coarse and fine treatment. The plus 14 mesh fraction does not require concentration. Coarse treatment includes agglomerate spiralling, belt flotation, thickening, scrubbing with sulfuric acid, de-oiling for reagent removal, and cationic flotation of fine quartz. A recent trend is to screen at coarser than 35 mesh size and eliminate coarse particle treatment, sacrificing some grade of this product. Techniques for flotation concentration of the fine size fraction are discussed.

Drilling activity in Ohio increased slightly in 1939. There were 1020 completions as compared to 910 in 1938. During the past six years the number of completions has varied little (Table 1). Oil production in Ohio has been gradually declining since 1896, when the peak production of 23,941,000 bbl. was reached (Fig. 1). Since that date production has slowly declined to an estimated production in 1939 of 3,144,134 bbl., the lowest in 53 years. This total production is divided approximately into the following grades of crude oil: Pennsylvania, 1,185,456 bbl.; Corning, 1,261,615 Flg 1. bbl.; Lima, 578,500 bbl.; Lodi, Based on figures of U. S. .Bureau of 104,740 bbl.; Cleveland, 13,823 Mines and Oil andGas Journal bbl. Table 2 shows the prices paid for the various grades of crude oil.

The existence of iron ore and anthracite coal in the neighborhood of Providence, R. I., baa long been known, chiefly as a geological fact; that these materials, so near to each other and to tidewater, are of such a good quality and are present in such large quantity, as to have seriously raised the question of establishing blast furnaces there, was a surprising fact to me; and I have thought that the few notes I have lately gathered on the subject would be of interest at this partly New England meeting.
