President Allende says he will expropriate all American investments in Chile and he's already well on the way to accomplishing this objective. What the average observer doesn't realize is that this has not only created big lossess for the copper companies. It could also take a chunk out of the U.S. taxpayers' pockets. Premier Castro expropriated the U.S. taxpayers' investment of over $100 million in the Nicaro (Cuba) nickel and cobalt operations-and U.S. Government protest over the loss was never heard above a whisper. Where the taxpayer comes in today is through the Overseas Private Investment Corporation, which was set up to guarantee U.S. companies' foreign investments against losses due to political changes. As of now, metals firms hold more than $300 million worth of obligations against this U.S. Government agency. The agency itself may not be able to raise more than $85 million, and a supplemental appropriation may be needed to meet its guarantees.

B.: The recent cable I sent you for a transfer of $200,000 was the outcome of the diligence and perspicacity of our group which, as you know, is laboring under severe hardships here in Rondônia. I only mention the latter difficulties in passing because no reply has been received to our urgent appeal for money. As much as I detest appearing to plead for more attention than you feel called upon to pay to our forgotten mission, I can assure you that it would be in the best interest of the company for you to do so. The fact is, we have been able to outmaneuver the competition and have succeeded in securing pesquizas on some of the most promising cassiterite gravels. We have not been able, up to now, to do much bulk sampling (for lack of funds) but our preliminary panning shows great promise as you can see from the enclosed assay sheets.

PORTH, New York, N.Y.-I would like to ask what effect segregation of lead would have upon the corrosion of sheet zinc; also what effect would abnormal percentages of iron have upon the ductility of Sheet zinc? One of our difficulties seemed to be that the cells, when standing on the shelf, corroded. We have attributed this to local action in the zinc sheet. We would like to know whether the segregation of, these impurities in this sheet zinc will have any effect on the local action occur-ring in sheet zinc. Lately we have had difficulty in punching some sheet zinc, in that the sheets split in the die. The section that split seemed to have an abnormallly high percentage of cadmium and iron; would that cause it to become brittle? C. H. Time and again, lives are lost in underground cave-ins only be- cause there is no quick, sure way of locating the victims. When such accidents happen, rescuers must usually depend on the testimony of eye- witnesses for information on the whereabouts of trapped miners. Seldom is this information reliable. The witnesses themselves have just been through a traumatic experience that has distorted or destroyed their sense of time and place. A far more reliable method of finding men underground has recently been developed by the Coal Mining Research Institute of Ostrava, Czechoslovakia. With this system, a miner can be located with adequate precision even if he shows no sign of life. For the system to work, the miner need only have his electric cap lamp somewhere nearby. The system consists of a minute radio transmitter operated by the lamp battery (Fig. 1). This tiny transmitter continuously emits high- frequency electromagnetic waves that can be picked up by a sensitive direction-finder receiver in case of accident.

NELSON,*Worcester, Mass.-In reply to the question "Is there any final information in regard to the relation between the temperature or the rate of cooling of a piece of heat-treated steel from the drawing temperature, and the so-called notch toughness?" I might say that we have conducted a large series of tests in the study of impacts on chrome-nickel and carbon steels and have gone into the subject of quenching from drawing temperature quite thoroughly but have found that one cannot lay down any definite rule or law with respect to the effect of quenching from the drawing heat. We conducted experiments on the effect of cooling by quenching in water, cooling in air, and burying the coupon in lime. Steels that have practically no impact value when air cooled may show very marked results when they are quenched in water, depending on the temperature at which the drawing is done.

Freezeproofing waste dump cars during winter months has long been of concern at Kennecott's Utah Copper Div. open pit property. Waste mining operations at Bingham Canyon use trains of seven 40-cu yd side-dump railroad cars with electric locomotives to service stripping shovels. Waste is transported an average of nearly 3 miles from the mine benches to dumping areas. During winter months, usually beginning in late October or early November, intermittent and continued periods of freezing together with varying amounts of snow cause waste material to freeze or stick to the sides and bottoms of the cars. Because of the physical layout of the pit, it is not feasible to freezeproof all waste trains at one or even a limited number of locations. A waste haulage line usually serves one or two mine benches, so that freezeproofing facilities must be maintained at many locations. For example, at the time of writing 27 salting stations were in use.

The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, has established a computer-implemented coalbed methane data base containing data representing over 2,000 coal samples from approximately 250 coalbeds located in 17 States and one Canadian Province. Space for approximately 130 sample characteristics is reserved for each sample record and is divided for access efficiency into three separate physical files. A software package was written to provide a user-friendly environment in which the three files can be manipulated simultaneously. These files can be used interactively in DATATRIEVE 11, a commercially available sorting, retrieval, and report-writing software package or in any FORTRAN-compatible system for statistical analysis. The data base has been established for coalbed methane research in response to the health and safety needs of the mining industry. Possible applications of the data base include mine planning related to the occurrence of gas, as well as delineating areas of resource recovery and utilization.

The validity for consolidated sands of Kozeny's rela- tionship and of the formula derived by Carman for capillary rise are discussed. INTRODUCTION In the course of time several quantities and relations have been put forward in order to describe the texture of a porous medium and the flow of fluid through it. Among these relations the so-called Kozeny formula and a formula for capillary rise, for both of which Carman',' has given a derivation, will be specially considered here. There are in this country some 20 or 30 societies for engineers and engineering scientists. Most of these organizations are autonomous, and there is little or no cooperation among them. Many do not touch the lives of our Institute members. However, during the course of the years several societies closely associated with the AIME have banded together to handle specific situations where cooperation was necessary. It is believed by many engineers that the functions of these cooperative societies should be analyzed and a plan set up to unify the engineering profession into an organization similar to the American Medical Association and the American Bar Association. The preliminary study of the AIME Committee for Inter-Engineering Society Cooperation has indicated that the following organizations bear upon the professional lives of our members. Some of these are federated groups, such as EJC and ECPD; others are individual-member participation groups, such as the Founder Societies and NSPE.

Friends often ask how accurate the work of our little stamp mill is, or express the opinion that a little mill cannot do good work. As a reply we would like to place on record the results of a few tests. There are two periods of work in our laboratory; the fall term, when the class collectively goes through all our chief laboratory-processes, and the spring term, when the students work up their theses, each electing some one process or investigation and devoting himself wholly, or almost wholly, to that. Some of the tests, the results of which are recorded in this paper, were made in the fall term; the preparation of the apparatus, the sampling and the assaying being done largely by assistants, with the aid of the students. If confronted with the problem of pumping a mixture of slime-free sand, gravel and boulders up to six in. in diameter, at the rate of 175 tons per hr in one single-stage pump against a static head of 90 ft and a total head of 140 ft, of which 20 is on the suction side, an engineer might be forgiven for backing away from the job, especially if he were also told that the pump wearing parts must have a minimum hardness of 550 Brine11 for the sake of abrasion resistance. Yet precisely that feat has been accomplished in the gravel pit of John B. LaGarde, Inc., near Anniston, Ala. The pump used is of decidedly novel design and its successful operation since installation 1.5 years ago suggests that it may be of timely interest in numerous other applications in the mining industry, such as pump transportation of coal washer refuse or rock from open-pit's without unduly fine crushing.

1. BRINELL tests at progressively increasing temperatures are given for a representative lead-base and a representative tin-base babbitt, showing that the former has superior resistance to deformation at the working temperatures of bearings. 2. Small squares of bearing bronze, tinned and then babbitted with a representative lead-base babbitt and a representative tin-base. babbitt were subjected to compressive loading. The lead-base babbitt showed less average compression than the tin-base babbitt. Compression did not materially increase the Brinell hardness of the babbitts. 3. A process and a tool are described for giving smoother and more accurate surfaces to bearings than has heretofore been possible. The following experiments have recently been carried out in the chemical laboratory of the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Co., Pittsburgh, Pa. While the work is incomplete, it is described at the present time because data on the comparative merits of lead-base and tin-base babbitts are of interest in connection with the present shortage of tin.
