In the Anthracite Region there are considerable areas where the original mining was done 50 or more years ago. In this original mining, the pillars that were left proved inadequate in size for the support of the roof, which has since collapsed as a result of squeezes, and completely filled the original openings. In an endeavor to recover the coal which remains in the pillars in such areas, the reopening cost for development, as well as for pillar recovery, has been excessive in many instances. Various methods have been tried out with a view to lowering the cost, in order that the greatest possible percentage of recovery of the reserve tonnage may be realized economically. Ordinary hand mining necessitates the driving of development road 10 ft. wide in the clear between timber legs, with 6 ft. of clearance over the rail to accommodate mine cars; collars or crossbars on the timber sets have been difficult to maintain in these openings in the heavily caved condition, especially in beds where the overburden is great,. Numerous failures have occurred on these development road timbers because of roof movement resulting from removal of pillars. The actual removal of pillars from this development work has been costly because full-width openings for transporting mine cars to the face have to be maintained by cleaning caved material from alongside the pillars, or skipping up along the pillars where pillars of sufficient width are found. Shaker-chute Methods A method of developing such caved conditions and recovering pillars tributary to this development, utilizing shaker chutes, is being tried out with considerable success at Loree colliery. An outline of the chute and apparatus is shown in Fig. 1, which indicates the location of pillars and caved material. The cost of both labor and material required in the recovery of such coal is considerably less than by ordinary hand methods. In order to try out this method of mining a location was chosen where a tightly caved area had been developed by ordinary hand methods to within 300 ft. of the property line. You have just heard several papers on the classification of coal as this subject appears to the chemist; I shall approach it from the point of view of the geologist who, perforce, has to deal with coal as it occurs in the ground and with the miner of coal who knows certain phases of the physical characteristics of coal better than the scientist can possibly know them. The chemist is familiar with coal as it reaches him in the laboratory, but he seldom has an opportunity to see it in its native condition and to study its physical characteristics and its behavior under varying conditions of weather, transportation and use. He naturally regards the chemical composition of coal as the all-important feature upon which to base a system of classification and he is sometimes inclined to ignore as unscientific any scheme of classification that is based on characteristics other than chemical. The geologist, on the other hand, although he is glad to use the data furnished by the chemist, must depend largely upon the differences that he can see and feel. Classification Understandable to the Layman In the very comprehensive program of examination of the coal fields of the West which the U. S. Geological Survey undertook in 1906, it fell to my lot, as the responsible head of the work, to classify the coals in advance of much knowledge of their chemical composition and in regions where mining had not begun. In this work I was forced to devise some sort of classification that would work practically and that would be understandable to the layman in the field. Much of the classification was based on the work of those who had gone before me, but in the low rank coals of the West the field was unoccupied and I was forced to devise a scheme embracing both chemical and physical characteristics. This scheme has stood the test of actual practical application for several years but it needs revision and the sharpening of the limits between the different ranks. I feel that my experience warrants my saying that physical characteristics must be considered and I have faith to believe that some scheme embodying both can be devised.

It has been repeatedly questioned whether estimates of oil reserves are of any practical value, as the greater number of such calculations previously made have subsequently been proved to be grossly inaccurate. But even admitting partial justification for such statements, it must be evident that some idea, however approximate, of the available reserves of essential minerals is of vital importance in mapping their development and the future trend of the related industries, particularly if it is kept constantly in mind that these estimates—which are never intended as a final word—must be continually subject to revision in accordance with the changes in their component factors. The value of these estimates, therefore, hinges on the clear understanding that they can only apply within the limited time when the controlling factors remain unchanged. It should be understood, however, that while estimates of possible and probable oil deposits are as a rule but idle conjectures, appraisals of proven oil reserves can undoubtedly be made with an ever-increasing degree of accuracy. And it is with this in mind that in the present study the endeavor has been to estimate only the world's proven oil reserves—the oil that yet remains underground in the producing fields—and their logical extensions, and to leave out of consideration the questionable volume of the probable and possible oil reserves. In Table 1 the countries at present producing oil in commercial quantities are listed in the order of the magnitude of their proven reserves. As shown in the table, the world's proven oil reserves are estimated at over 24 billion barrels, while the total production to the end of 1932 aggregates nearly 23 billions. Past production represents, therefore, 48 per cent, and proven reserves approximately 52 per cent of the total. About 61 per cent of the reserves are located in the American continent and close to 33 per cent in the Near East fields of Russia, Iraq and Persia. It is interesting to note that the proven reserves in the important producing regions almost equal if not exceed their production to date. The Mexican fields are a remarkable exception in this respect since they produced over 135 billion barrels and have proven reserves estimated at only 300 million barrels.

DURING the last 20 years, experimenters have sought to utilize pulverized coal in boiler plants, but refractory and slag troubles have usually overbalanced any, gains in efficiency that were obtained. These troubles were caused largely by lack of knowledge of the proper methods of coal preparation and lack of a furnace design that would be adaptable to pulverized-coal firing. When this information was obtained the results were so much more satisfactory that within the last 5 years approximately, 80,000 boiler hp. have been installed in plants ranging from 1000 to 20,000 boiler hp. rated capacity, which are operating at an average of 174 per cent. of rating. The first commercial installation for burning pulverized coal under boilers was made at the Parsons shops of the M. K. & T. railroad in 1916. Of eight 250-hp. water-tube boilers thus fitted, six were operated continuously for 3 yr., when oil was obtained at such a low price as to warrant its use. Since then, this plant has been operating alternately on pulverized coal and oil, depending on prevailing prices. Recently gas has been discovered within 20 mi. of this plant, so that this fuel may also be used. No change in furnace design was made when changing from pulverized coal to oil or gas firing. One of the principal advantages of this method of firing is its ability to utilize, with maximum efficiency, all kinds of coal, irrespective of quality or physical characteristics. In fact, quite a number of the present pulverized-coal installations were made for the purpose of utilizing coal that could not be marketed or used in any other way. The Pacific, Coast Coal Co., at Black Diamond, Wash., formerly hand fired the boilers, using approximately 125 tons of prepared steam-size coal daily. The Black Diamond steam coal is the best quality of coal for steaming purposes mined in that section of the country, and there is a market for all that can be produced. By installing a pulverizing plant, it was possible to substitute coal of a size and quality that had no commercial value, so that 125 tons daily of the best steam coal formerly used at the mines is now marketed.

The spacing of wells in Long Beach oil field has caused much discussion from the earliest days of its development, on account of the closely drilled town-lot areas which have been as intensively developed as any productive areas in the world. The purpose of this paper is to present the results obtained from this type of development in comparison with the more widely spaced development in this field, now that a sufficient length of productive life has elapsed. The intensity of development in Long Beach is indicated by the fact that up to Sept. 1, 1929, there were 1736 wells either drilled or drilling. Of these 165 failed to get production and 121 were drilling. Thus 1450 wells have produced oil from an area of 1350 acres. Up to July 1, 1929, these wells produced a total of 35.5,047,913 barrels. Method Pursued Four groups of offset areas were chosen, in each group the wells in one area are widely spaced and in the other, closely spaced. The areas in each group are contiguous and the groups are spread over the field from the southeast end to the northwest, so that representative data are assured. The comparison has also been extended to shallow and deep zones, like zones in their respective areas being compared. Even though these productive zones are very thick, a fair picture of results is obtained, because the drilling of the wells in the two types of areas was concurrent in the different groups and, as a rule, the thickness of sand opened up at any one time was about the same. As deeper sands were found, wells in offset areas were deepened or new ones were drilled in both types of areas. The division of zones was made in the same manner in contiguous areas. The total cumulative production up to July 1, 1929, of the wells in their respective zones in each area was obtained. From these figures were computed the recovery per well, recovery per acre, acreage per well, and the ratios of these factors. Thus July 1, 1929, is the end of the period considered in all areas.

Prof. J. W. Richards, South Bethlehem, Pa. (in reply to several questions):—The cut representing some of the round briquettes which were under test shows that, at the brcaking-stresses, they break into lumps, and do not disintegrate into powder. The process is simplicity itself. I have followed the different processes for sintering iron-ores and flue-dust, am interested in all of them and wish them all success; but this process appealed to me strongly by its simplicity. It is in line with a method which I once tried to work out myself, but which never came to anything, namely, the agglomeration of fine iron-ores by means of Portland cement. As small an amount as 5 or 6 per cent. of Portland cement will enable fine ore to agglomerate and set into a briquette, but when I came to estimate the cost, I found it was a little too high. The Schumacher process, curiously enough, does not work well on iron-ore, but flue-dust thus treated does harden and give a strong briquette. In my attempts to find a reason for this difference, it has occurred to me that possibly the particles of flue-dust had been coated over with some sublimed silica, which might be an agent in the setting. But I found by experiment that neither sublimed silica, nor ordinary silica, nor ordinary alumina, would briquette. Chemically pure iron oxide briquetted quite hard; but the application of pressure is a necessary part of the operation. If simply moistened with the solution and allowed to stand it does not set hard, but the more pressure applied to it the hardcr it sets. Evidently the flue-dust particles must be pressed very close together in order to get the small proportion of active material wet, so that the particles shall act at their points of contact; for it is evident that only at the points of contact does the cementing action take place. MILLER, Canada. The nomination for President has attracted the attention of a large number of members, as is evidenced by the receipt of many hundreds of letters and postcards. Most of these favored either Sidney J. Jennings or Philip N. Moore, each of whom received many cordial endorsements. Such a wide interest on the part of the members is a very wholesome sign, but where there is so much activity it is natural to expect a certain amount of criticism. Some of the letters indicate that the authors feel that the nomination of President should be left entirely to the Committee on Nominations without any effort by the members at large to influence them. Others feel that the nominations are largely controlled by a small group and that the members at large can have little influence. As the result; of the experience of the last few months; a majority of the Committee on Nominations begs leave to suggest that the method of making nominations be changed so that two candidates, at least, for the various offices to be nominated, and suggests that the Directors appoint a committee to investigate this question thoroughly with. a view to making definite recommendations. In accordance with its opinion that the best interests of the Institute would be served by a change in the Constitution, allowing the nomination of two candidates, and in view of the fact that this Committee has no authority to make more than a single nomination for each office, considering the high standing of both Mr. Jennings and Mr. Moore and the large number of members favoring each of these gentlemen, this Committee respectfully suggests the desirability of ,the immediate nomination of Philip N. In the summer of 1917 it was decided to fireproof the main Tramway hoisting shaft of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. at Butte, Mont. The shaft has three hoisting compartments and one pump compartment; it is timbered with 12 by 12-in. (30.5 by 30.5-cm.) fir timber, and is 2475 ft. (754 m.) deep. Subsidence and displacement of the surrounding country rock had produced exceedingly heavy ground, and had carried the shaft out of line, in several places, by as much as 2 ft. (0.6 m.) displacement. Constant repairing and realigning of the timbers had been necessary in order to maintain clearance for the cages. The most feasible method of fireproofing, therefore, seemed to be to cover the timbers with a coat of concrete applied with the cement gun. The cement gun, which is operated by compressed air at ordinary mine pressures, feeds a mixture of sand and cement through a hose to a nozzle having a water connection. The mortar in fluid form is thus sprayed upon the prepared surface in thin layers, which can be built up to any desired thickness. The cement gun can be set up at any convenient point; satisfactory results have been obtained with the nozzle a distance of 500 ft. (152 m.) from the gun. The shaft was thoroughly overhauled and the timbers put in the best possible state of repair. Between the 1000 and the 1400 levels, much loose ground lay against the shaft timbers on the north side; this was breast-boarded back and a 30-in. (76-cm.) reinforced-concrete retaining wall was erected, leaving a space of 12 in. (30.5 cm.) outside the shaft timbers to allow for future movements of the ground. For convenience in handling men and materials, it was arranged to concrete the auxiliary hoisting-cage compartment and the pump compartment first, using the cages of the main hoist to serve the cementing crews. The auxiliary cage was then available while the remainder of the shaft was being concreted. A tight partition of 2-in. (5.08-cm.) plank was erected between the auxiliary and the adjoining hoisting compartments, for better protection of men riding on the cages. The application of concrete made this

GOOD will is becoming recognized more and more as a necessary business asset, and a successful concern must have the good will not only of its customers and the public, but of its employees. Management -enlightened management-recognizes this and will go the limit to get it. Progress depends on cooperation, and in industry cooperation must be based on the acceptance by employ-ers and employees of some practical application of the principle that capital and labor are interdependent. Capital cannot exist without labor, and labor without capital is helpless. The development of each is depen-dent on the cooperation of the other. Confidence and good will are the foundation of every successful enter-prise, and these can be created only by securing a point of contact between employer and employee. We feel that one of the most effective agencies for promoting good will between employers and employees is through some well organized method of conference and have consequently adopted, to accomplish this, a plan of employee representation. The plan inaugurated by the Bethlehem Steel Co. about four years ago, which provides for the election by secret ballot of representatives by and from among the employees, has for its purpose three fundamentals; namely, to give the employees a voice in the determina-tion of the conditions under which they work, to furnish machinery for the prevention and adjustment of differ-ences between employees and management, and, so far as possible, to provide and foster continuous employment. The constitution and by-laws adopted take care of the detail in setting up machinery for the functioning of the representatives of both management and men, but the spirit with which the plan has been carried out and the results which have been accomplished are of far greater importance than the plan itself. The Bethlehem plan, which has been in operation since October, 1918, can no longer be classed as an experiment. The original by-laws provided for amend-ments and, as was anticipated, changes and improve-ments have been made from time to time by mutual agreement. The operation of the plan for over four years shows it to be fundamentally sound and that it must therefore be conceded a success.

Discoveries in Michigan, which at the beginning of the year 1934 indicated possible new areas, did not develop into fields of market-breaking proportions. Hart, Oceana County, developed small production from the Traverse lime. Edmore, Montcalm County, proved a small area for oil from the Traverse. West Branch, Ogemaw County, previously reported as Ogemaw, had quite a drilling campaign but was somewhat disappointing because wells were small and erratic. During the year, 30 wells were completed at West Branch, and at the end of the year 15 others in and around this field were under way. At West Branch the Traverse lime, found at 1800 ft., has thin porous streaks near the top, which make small wells; the Dundee lime at 2800 ft. produces from a porous zone of varying thickness. Over the entire field the Dundee wells average 10 to 20 bbl. per day. Acid treatment has materially increased production from some Dundee wells in this field. About 3000 acres have been proved productive from the Traverse and Dundee. At the close of the year the well in Beaverton township, Gladwin County, is probably the most discussed of any in Michigan and may be opening a new field of some proportions. It had an initial production of 70 bbl. daily from the Dundee lime at 3830, which has decreased to 25 bbl. per day. Deeper drilling into the lime may increase production. During 1935 the area around this test will probably be the most active in the state. Structural conditions in Gladwin County, as in other parts of Central Michigan, are obscured by a thick mantle of glacial drift and it will take considerable drilling to outline subsurface conditions accurately. The most important new shallow gas area of the year is around Edmore in Mecosta and Montcalm counties. Eight wells have been drilled to the Michigan stray and the upper Marshall sand, having a combined initial production of 30 million cubic feet. These gas wells are scattered over so wide an area that an estimate of proven territory cannot be made until more drilling is done. At the present time no gas is being sold from Edmore.

As a result of work done, on an operating scale, in its experimental mill during 1920 and 1921, the plan here given was proposed for crushing, grinding, and concentrating low-grade sulfide ores at the Morenci Branch of the Phelps Dodge Corpn. The flow sheet is designed to recover 85 per cent. of the total copper and 95 per cent. of the sulfide copper from ore assaying 2.0 per cent. total copper and 0.3 per cent. acid soluble copper. At present, 1400 tons are treated daily under the conditions of this flow sheet, two 700-ton units having been installed in the 4000-ton concentrator. The run-of-mine ore will be reduced, in the dry-crushing plant, to —6 mesh and then delivered to the concentrator feed bins. The crushing will be done in three stages: (I) Run-of-mine ore is reduced to —2 1/2-in. in a gyratory crusher; (2) the 3-in. ore is reduced to 1/2-in. in 72 by 24 in. rolls; (3) the 1/2-in. ore is reduced to — 6-mesh size in 54 by 24 in. rolls. The 54-in. rolls will operate in closed circuit with electrically vibrated screens, "Hum-mer" type, a conveyor circuit being used to carry the roll product to the screens. Sufficient screens will be installed to pass 1.5 tons undersize per hour per square foot. Fine-ore bin chutes will be piped for compressed air, which will be used intermittently to keep the ore feed in motion if it tends to arch or pipe in the bins. The Concentrator The concentration of the copper and iron sulfides in the ore will be effected in three stages: I. By direct treatment of the —6-mesh crushing-plant product on primary tables, which will recover about 35 per cent. of the original copper content of the ore in a clean granular concentrate. The table middling will be dewatered in Dorr rake classifiers and ground to — 48-mesh in ball mills operating in closed circuit with circulating classifiers.

The Gulf Coast area of Texas and Louisiana produced a total of 47,070,650 bbl. of oil during 1928, a decrease of 7,401,173 bbl. from the previous year. Of this amount Texas produced 39,353,950 bbl., or a decrease of 9,689,296 bbl. from the 1927 output. The Louisiana Gulf Coast produced 7,716,700 bbl., which is an increase of 2,288,123 bbl. over 1927. The decrease in the Texas Coastal area is due principally to the decline at Spindletop. Production at the beginning of the year in this field averaged 53,400 bbl. daily. At the end it had declined to 35,850 bbl. The increase in Louisiana was due to development in new fields at Kelso Bayou (East Hackberry), Sulphur, Sweet Lake, Bayou Boullion and Sorrento. This production was maintained by the drilling of 984 wells. Of this number 736 were located in Texas and 248 in Louisiana. Of the 984 wells drilled, 571 were reported as producers. Distribution of the various completions is listed in the accompanying tables compiled by Oil Weekly. New Developments New developments of particular importance in Texas were the finding of a 5000-bbl. well in formations of Cook Mountain age in the Clay Creek field located in northern Washington County by the Sun Oil Co. ; the discovery of oil at Dewalt in Fort Bend County by the Humble Oil & Refining Co.; the development of commercial production at Raccoon Bend in Austin County by the same company; and the finding of oil in formations of Oligocene age in the Refugio gas field of Refugio County. The most important development in Louisiana was the finding of oil at Sorrento, east of the Mississippi River, by the Gulf Production Co. The importance connected with these finds is not so great in that they opened up new fields, but in the new territories which they open as possibly productive of oil. Eastern Louisiana has been looked upon with considerable doubt on account of the theory which has prevailed among most geologists that the nature of the formations was not such as to produce oil. The method of charging a reverberatory furnace has changed many times since smelting was introduced in this country from the old smelters of Swansea, England. The cause of the latest change at the Garfield plant has been the excessive fineness of the charge due to fine grinding in the concentration of the crude copper ores. The many desirable features of deep-bath smelting as now used at Garfield have been proved. The old method of dropping the charge through holes in the arch (known as center-feed method) causes excessive dusting which makes heavy slag and flue-dust losses, also rapid deterioration of the silica brickwork of the furnace through fusion with the iron oxides from the dust. The purpose of this paper is to describe a gun feeder that was designed to overcome the disadvantages of the older methods of center feeding and still maintain the good features of deep-bath smelting with the hot finer charge. A gun feeder was designed to introduce the finely divided hot calcines under the moving gas stream of the combustion zone and still have them spread in a uniform blanket over the highly heated matte bath. The temperature of the furnace was so great that it was impossible to maintain a stationary feeder, so a movable feeder was designed that could be introduced into the highly heated zone and be withdrawn after the charge had been dropped. It was necessary to protect the nozzle of the gun with a water-cooled coil. Many different types of protected nozzles were tried, such as air jackets, water jackets and heat-resisting steel alloys, but none proved satisfactory. The angle of inclination of the feeder was found to be an important factor in spreading the charge evenly over the surface of the bath. An angle of 34" to 37" was found to be the most advantageous. To allow a continuous flow of ore from the charge car to the point of discharge inside the furnace, the feeder was made with telescopic connections. RefineRs of lead by the Parkes process have always been solicitous of recovering the zinc used in the desilverization, and justly so, as the loss in zinc constitutes one of the heavy costs in this method of refining. Part of this loss is due to the absorption of zinc by lead, and in the present state of knowledge is not recoverable as metallic zinc. The remainder of the zinc, which finds its way into the precious-metal-bearing crust, is recoverable and naturally engages the operators' most exacting attention. Careful elimination of the impurities in base bullion has enabled the refiner to produce a zinc crust better adapted to retorting, which reflects favorably in the zinc recovery;- and to produce a richer crust, thereby lowering the zineking cost, as the increased efficiency of the zinc results in less of it being in circulation. It is obvious that if the ratio of concentration be increased, a lessening of the amount of crust formed will ensue, throwing less work on the retorts and diminishing the amount of retort metal sent to the cupels, thus making an actual money saving in all these operations. In the effort to obtain a rich crust, the metallurgist has increased the heat to a considerable degree, upon the assumption that at the higher temperature the zinc-dver alloy could be squeezed free from the adhering lead. A further possibility for improvement suggested itself in the freezing-point curve of Prof. H. C. Carpenter, upon zinc and silver. Study of this curve disclosed the existence of a definite chemical compound, Zn3Ag2, with a freezing point of 665" C., a promising compound for practical application. In the experiment undertaken it was endeavored to force this compound into the crust, hoping thereby to obtain a higher concentration than formerly. It was recognized that in bringing a large kettle of lead to such a heat, more fuel would be used, the life of the kettle would perhaps be shorter, and other disadvantages would be experienced. I DESIRE to call the attention of the Institute to a novel system of dredging, which, it seems to me, may prove applicable, not only to river and harbor improvements, but also to certain varieties at least of alluvial and diluvial gold mining; that is, river-mining, barmining, coast-mining, and any other similar operations now carried on by means of coffer-dams or dredging machines. The simple and effective method to which I refer is the invention of General Roy Stone, formerly an officer of volunteers, and at present a civil engineer, engaged under General Newton, of the United States Engineer Corps, upon the government works in New York harbor. General Stone has been, since September, 1878, in charge of operations upon Diamond Reef. This reef, lying between Governor's Island and the Battery, is one of the most dangerous in the harbor. Its position in the highway of navigation, and the fact that it is dangerous only to vessels of considerable draught and at certain stages of the tide, combine to increase the serious nature of the disasters which it has caused. The reef consists partly of rock in place, and partly of deposits of glacial clay, boulders, and pebbles, over all of which lies, or did lie until it was removed, the ordinary silt and rubbish of the harbor. As the purpose of the present paper has nothing to do with the special dimensions and other circumstances of this particular work, I describe those features only which are connected with General Stone's ingenious device. Various attempts have been made to remove the upper portion of Diamond Reef and secure a navigable depth at low tide. Some years ago Maillefert undertook to accomplish this by firing charges of high explosives, simply laid upon the surface. He accomplished some good in the removal of projecting points and ridges ; but as soon as the surface of the reef had become approximately level, his method was no longer effective. After the work had been taken up by the Engineer Corps, the well-known drilling-scow invented by General Newton was brought into action ; and, so long as holes could be bored and fired in solid rock, this process was effective enough. THE word temperature has both a colloquial and a technical use. For everyday purposes of abusing the weather man, no very exact definition is necessary, but for the purpose of giving a simple summary of the physical laws that form the basis of practical pyrometry, something more precise is required. Beginning, therefore, with the common concept of "hotness" and "coldness," we must agree on a method of measuring differences in "hotness," on the unit to be used, and on the point from which measurements are to be taken. We shall then have a definite "scale of temperature," which can be used in all methods of pyrometry. But, as in many similar cases, it is much easier to define or describe something than it is to make practical application and use of the definition; so that much of our attention will be taken up with practical methods of realizing or applying the scale agreed upon. It was early observed that changes in temperature produced large and easily measurable changes in gases, which may be most simply separated into changes in volume (expansion and contraction) under conditions of constant pressure, and changes in pressure under conditions of constant volume. These changes are much the same in magnitude for the common gases oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen and also for the rarer helium and argon. This relative uniformity in behavior led to the suggestion of "the gas thermometer" and "the gas scale" as the basis for all temperature measurements. However, as methods were refined, differences appeared between different gases and different ways of using gases, so that Lord Kelvin introduced his more fundamental notion of the "absolute thermodynamic scale" of temperature, which he defined as follows: Given two bodies, say two tanks of water, at different temperatures to determine these temperatures on the "absolute thermodynamic," or Kelvin, scale, operate a thermal engine between these two temperatures, letting it take in heat from the hot body and give out heat to the cold, which therefore corresponds to the boiler and the condenser of a steam engine. The scope of this article covers only the mathematical principles involved in discounting to present worth future expected profits and it is believed answers definitely two questions, which were raised at a recent meeting of the Committee on Methods of Valuing Coal Properties, as follows: 1. The accumulative effect of carrying charges on the value of coal mines showing definitely the number of years beyond which the coal may not be mined at a profit and subsequent to which the possession of any unmined coal will be a liability rather than an asset. 2. The effect on the valuation of coal mines, in the presence of the carrying charges described in question 1, of an increase in plant capacity and production. In general, in considering these questions, it may be stated that the consideration of an increase in plant capacity and production follows as a matter of course after a determination has been made of the year beyond which no profits are to be realized (giving the carrying charges accumulative effect, or in other words capitalizing the carrying charges, as shown hereinafter). For example, if it is determined that any coal that is unmined after 45 years will have no value or less than no value, the question immediately arises as to whether or not a plant should be constructed that would result in a yearly production great enough to extract the entire tonnage in a time less than 45 years, and if so the number of years less than 45 years that would, from a financial standpoint, be the most desirable, all under the assumption that the market for the product or the transportation facilities are such that the yearly production can be increased to the desired amount. Specifically, the carrying charge is considered herein as yearly expense, such as state or local taxes, which are assessed each year against the total tonnage remaining in the ground (or the total coal acreage remaining) at the beginning of the year, at a fixed rate per ton (or a fixed rate per acre) OF a fixed percentage of the assessed value, in the latter case it being necessary to convert such percentage into a rate per

THE technological study of the treatment of gold and silver ores has been largely responsible for the phenomenal strides which have marked the progress in this branch of metallurgy during recent years. In no other application of science to industry is system more imperative at every stage; correct formulation of result is only second in importance to efficiency of operation. Progresss in method has been largely the result of individual initiative, aided by the work of technical journals and metallurgical societies. There still remains a field for profitable discussion, and it is my intention to deal with some inconsistencies of expression common to a number of writers on the subject; and also to draw attention to the false impressions created by a statement which may, possibly, be only unintentionally misleading. I also take the opportunity of tracing the source of both metallurgical and economic result; and to question the desirability of the methods usually employed in arriving at a final statement. In the first place, I wish to deal with the question of extraction. This term may mean anything or nothing, and it is often used to mislead. In a report of a mining engineer as to the result of operations subsequent to the remodeling of a treatment plant prominence was given to the statement that the extraction had amounted to 91 per cent. On examination it was found that only a small percentage of the so-called extraction was calculated on actual bullion return, a proportion being figured from the gold left in the zinc boxes, and not recovered. In addition to this, a proportion of the extraction was said to be due to gold in concentrate. As there was no concentrating apparatus on the property and as concentration did not form a part of the scheme of treatment the matter was investigated, with the result that the concentrate, of lower gold content that the original ore, was found to be the result of an inefficient pumping system which failed to provide for the whole of the battery product delivered to it. The balance was stacked and, although itself of no marketable value, the gold content was allowed to form a basis of extraction figures.
