Kansas ranked fourth on the list of oil-producing states during the year 1930. Progressive statistics show that total production for the year will approximate 42,729,085 bbl. When final figures are compiled for Kansas the production may exceed this estimate, and thereby threaten the all-time record of 43,253,470 bbl. in 1918. Throughout the year the cumulative volume of potential drilled-up production has been increased by new discoveries and by extensions to proven areas in the territory west of the Nemaha (granite ridge) Range. Scattered drilling and leasing operations of a constructive nature occurred, but completions declined to the lowest levels in more than 11 years. Average initial production of current completions climbed to a new all-time high of 512 bbl. to the well. Proration measures were applied to the flush pools. The resulting shut-in potential production, as of December 15, is estimated at 110,000 bbl. This estimate is a wild guess. If all wells of the state were permitted to flow wide open for a period of six months production would not exceed 150,000 bbl. a day. The outstanding development of the year was an intensive drilling campaign in southwestern Kansas, which contributed at least 1,000,000 acres of contiguous natural-gas lands to the natural-gas resources of the United States. Production and Development Prospecting for oil in Kansas began shortly after the initial prospecting at Titusville. Operations and interest in the potentialities became active about 1870. This development was restricted to the shallow districts of northeastern Kansas. By 1895 operations had extended southward to the Oklahoma state line and sufficient prospecting had taken place to prove the potentialities of the state. Active prospecting was extended westward by the discovery of oil on the Nemaha Range in Butler County about 1916. The discovery of oil in Russell County added an extensive borderland province in 1923. The important discoveries of oil in Sedgwick County revived interests and operations throughout this territory in 1928. The development of widespread natural-gas lands in extreme southwestern Kansas during 1930 carried active exploration to the western boundary of the state.

The active development of the vast East Texas oil field, the attendant effects of the rapidly increasing flow from its prolific wells and the efforts to bring order out of chaos precluded or dwarfed other oil development in Texas during 1931. In a paper by Dr. F. H. Lahee1 presented at the October, 1931, meeting, the early history of the East Texas oil field is described and the sequence of events in connection with its development and efforts to control its production up to Sept. 25 is narrated. At that time the Railroad Commission of the state reduced the production of the field to a maximum of 400,000 bbl. per day by restricting the allowable daily production per well to 185 bbl. By further reduction in the daily production per well to 100 bbl., the field was held below that maximum figure during the remainder of the year. Meanwhile, as a result of an injunction against the Railroad Commission, its authority in the field was superseded on Oct. 13 by the Governor of the state, and after that date production was controlled directly by his orders issued under authority of martial law. Suits to contest this authority were brought in the Federal courts and were pending at the close of the year. On March 5, 1931, as a result of the East Texas production, posted prices for Mid-Continent 40' A.P.I. crude slumped from $1.07 to $0.67. As East Texas production continued to mount, posted prices in East Texas were reduced to $0.37 on June 3 and $0.22 on July 8, although in that field most of the oil was sold for much less, bringing the producer and royalty owner as low as $0.025 per barrel. Northeast Texas To the information contained in Dr. Lahee's paper, it can now be added that the East Texas field has produced over 105,000,000 bbl. and registered about 3700 successful completions during 1931. There may be some merit to the recent prediction that a large part of the field will have passed its flowing period by the middle of 1932 unless

The Marquette range, on which are situated the iron mines of Mar-quette County, together with a few in Baraga County, Mich., extends from a point 10 miles southwest of Marquette westward for 30 miles. The tracts are usually a multiple of the standard 40-acre parcel, which is the smallest government subdivision of a square mile or section. About half of the mines are held in fee, these being owned by the older mining companies. Some of them date back to about 1880, and a few are as early as 1850. During the past 40 years most of the mines opened have been on leased lands, the royalty being either for a stated amount per ton or a percentage of the selling price of the ore at the lower lake ports, or the selling price on board of cars at the mine. The first merchantable body of ore discovered in the Lake Superior district was found, in 1845, at what is known as the Jackson mine, near Negaunee. This ore was hard hematite. After unprofitable attempts had been made, in 1848, to smelt it in forges, shipments were begun to lower lake ports, which increased rapidly upon the completion of the locks at Sault Ste. Marie, in 1855, and the railroad from the mines to Marquette, in 1857. Beginning with the Pioneer, in 1858, a number of small charcoal furnaces were built to smelt a part of the product. At various points in the upper and lower peninsulas, large charcoal furnaces are still making iron from the ores of the Marquette range. In connection with these furnaces are byproduct plants. As the deposits were opened up, soft ore was encountered, but for a few years this was disregaided, as only the hard ore was used. Underground mining was begun about 1880 and during the next few years the open-pit mines producing high-grade ore were exhausted. The first mines in the district were owned by the Jackson, Cleveland, Lake Superior, Lake Angeline, Champion, Iron Cliffs, Humboldt, Republic, and Michigamme companies. Many of these companies have been merged in the holdings of The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., which controls most of the tonnage of the district.

Discussion of the paper of L. A. DELANO, presented at the St. Louis meeting, October, 1917, and printed in Bulletin No. 129, September, 1917, pp. 1267 to 1286. L. A. DELANO.-Since this paper was written, our daily mill tonnage has increased, from 2100 tons to 2700 tons a clay. We now use 11,000 lb. of chrome-steel balls of 2 ½ -in. maximum diameter, for an average crushing capacity of 275 tons per 24 hr., this giving a much higher crushing efficiency. I wish to call attention to two typographical errors in my paper as published. On page 1271, Table 1, the screen analysis of ore at the Bonne Terre mill should be stated in inches instead of mesh. - On page 1272, "the rolls average 185 tons per 24 hr., and have shown by test that 250 tons per hour can be maintained" should, of course, read "250 tons per 24 hours." THE CHAIRMAN (0. M. BILHARZ, Miami, Okla.).-Is the increased mill capacity due to improvement in the re-crushing of middlings or to keeping middlings out of circulation and treating them separately? L. A. DELANO.-AS was shown in Mr. Rabling's paper (Bulletin No. 128, p. 1161) the tonnage was raised by about 400 tons by simply changing the arrangement of screen openings in the jig bed and using punched plate instead of woven-wire screen. Then, by adding a ball-mill, we are taking from the jigs a much larger tonnage of middlings than before or as much as the ball-mill will crush. By sending the ball-mill product to tables and flotation, the jig capacity for original ore is increased. CHAIRMAN BILHARZ.-In your opinion, the satisfactory operation of a Hancock jig on a given ore requires adjustment of the length of the different screens and careful selection of screen openings? L. A. DELANO.-I think it does. In order to decide what screen openings to use on the jigs, we did a great deal of experimental work, making screen analyses of the various hutch products, and then hand-sorting the galena, middlings and chat from each size screen to determine the percentage of galena in each. Then adjusting our jig screens, we gradually worked the process up to a very efficient basis. ERNEST GAYFORD, Salt Lake City, Utah.-I would like too ask Mr. Delano whether the work of the Allen cone has been quite as satisfactory as the manufacturers claim for it.

In August 1973, Fluor Utah, Inc. was awarded a contract by the Office of Coal Research (now part of the Energy Research and Development Administration), Department of the Interior, for the examination of the unique problems of large-scale surface coal mining to supply coal conversion complexes. The project consists of two phases: (I) data base development and organization and the formulation of a mathematical computer modeling system for surface mining; and (II) computer manipulation of the data base in accordance with the model to formulate several typical preliminary mine and preparation plant designs. Phase I is scheduled for completion by the end of July 1975 and Phase II is scheduled to be complete by the end of January 1977. This paper briefly discusses the effort for only one aspect of this project-the foundation for geologic modeling developed in Phase I. The Phase I task of geologic modeling can be broken down into two subtasks: (1) identify areas containing sufficient resources of surface-minable coal to support at least one large-scale mining complex, and (2) characterize the coal deposits in these areas for computer storage and retrieval. Identification of Resource Regions The basic production design criteria for large-scale surface mining, as stated in the contract, is the production of 75,000 tpd, or more, of bituminous coal. Based on a constant total Btu delivered to the preparation plant, daily production requirements for the different coals are as follows: Bituminous Coal 75,000 tons Subbituminous Coal 99,500 tons Lignite 143,500 tons Although surface mining on this scale is presently non-existent, it is deemed that future operations, in order to meet the increased energy demands, will have to look forward to much larger scale mining complexes. These tonnage requirements are meant to be used only for the delineation of general areas suitable for large-scale surface mining, termed "Strippable Coal Resource Regions." They were determined largely from the latest complete detailed coal resource estimates of the U.S. Bureau of Mines. Nine strippable coal resource regions, containing over 100 billion tons of strippable coal resources, were identified [(see Fig. 1)]. The delineation of these regions was based entirely upon estimates of surface-minable coal resources and the production design criteria for large-scale surface mining. If surface-mined coal was combined with underground production, or if smaller production rates were specified, then other areas which were omitted here would be included in the regions. Changing the outline of the regions, however, would not add any new mining situations to be studied in Phase II. MANGANESE has long been considered one of the United States' most important strategic raw materials. Its indispensability in steel manufacture makes it vital to the nation's industrial life. Coupled with this indispensability is the fact that domestic producers have not been able as yet to supply more than a small part of the nation's manganese needs; consequently the United States has had to depend upon such distant foreign sources as the U.S.S.R., British India, the African Gold Coast and Brazil for the major portion of its ore. The great bulk of the mineral is consumed in the form of ferromanganese, an alloy that averages 8o per cent manganese and 20 per cent mainly iron and carbon. Manganese is used as a deoxidizer and desulphurizer in steel manufacture. By combination with the residual oxygen and sulphur of the bath, it helps to produce a clean, sound metal. Approximately 14 lb. of manganese, it is estimated, is used in making one ton of steel. For standard-grade ferromanganese, the ore should have a minimum of about 48 per cent Mn and preferably more. Beneficiation methods have not yet been developed for making the immense low-grade deposits in the United States salable at prevailing prices. Dependence upon foreign sources thrust the United States into serious difficulties during the World War. At the start of hostilities in 1914, the nation was obtaining about four-fifths of its ore from the Eastern Hemisphere. Domestic production had been negligible, amounting to only 3000 to 7000 tons a year. As the war continued, shipments from the East, endangered by sea attack and blockade, dwindled rapidly. Imports from Brazil mounted. In this grave emergency, the United States, starting almost from scratch and under the stimulus of high prices, succeeded by 1918 in producing a peak of 311,000 tons, about 3 5 per cent of its consumption that year. Since the war, the United States has depended upon foreign sources for more than nine-tenths of its high-grade ore. During 1936, 1937 and 1938, imports for consumption averaged 736,000 tons a year. During the same period, domestic shipments averaged 21,000 tons a year. Of the imports, the U.S.S.R. accounted for an annual average of 280,000 tons, the Gold Coast 208,000 tons, India 74,000 tons, and Brazil 72,500 tons. But India and Brazil, which in 1936 ranked third and fourth in the list of importers, were displaced in 1937 and 1938 by a new and much nearer source-Cuba. From less than 1 per cent of United States imports in 1931, the island republic increased its shipments to more than 27 per cent in 1938. Cuba's average for this three-year period was 97,000 tons, and its total for 1938 was 131,000 tons.

The transportation of solids in pipe lines is a matter of deep concern in many fields of engineering. Much experimental and theoretical work has been done in an effort to devise means of designing pipe lines that will satisfactorily transport given solid loads, but there remain many unanswered questions in this field. The present discussion will be confined to a rather narrow portion of this field and will endeavor to point out certain factors that may well be considered when comparing the relative economy of various installations. The data have been presented previously but a new interpretation was prompted by a suggestion in a paper by Professor O'Brien,1 of the University of California, that the friction work per pound of dry material should be considered in determining the relative efficiency of various installations. This method of considering relative economy in various pipe lines leads to some rather unexpected conclusions, especially with reference to the economy of large pipe sizes. A previous suggestion by the writer3 concerning the economy of a rather peculiar type of installation is strengthened. It is not believed that the considerations set forth herein apply directly in the case of dredge lines, where economy is largely a matter of a high rate of pumping in order to reduce the unit overhead charge. However, it is believed that some value may be gained from these considerations in cases involving the disposal of a fixed amount of solids per unit time with a minimum expenditure of energy and at a low cost for replacement of worn pipes. Such situations are not uncommon in the disposal of mill tailings and the disposal of solids deposited from irrigation waters. It was found that data leading to general conclusions for various pipe sizes were not available but certain definite trends are indicated and methods of analyzing available data are presented in the hope that they may be of assistance in preparing engineering estimates on designs of pipe lines of the type described above. Energy Requirements Carrying out the idea contained in ' Professor O'Brien's paper concerning the method of computing energy required to transport solids, the following analysis leads to some rather interesting conclusions. INTRODUCTION OVERGRINDING, or the breaking of ore particles into sizes smaller than required for liberation, is a first-magnitude problem in grinding for concentration processes. The conventional ball mill-classifier circuit used in commercial grinding produces mineral particles that are all ground to pass an upper size limit, while the proportion of very fine sizes, or slimes, is uncontrolled. Calculations based on measurements made in commercial plants which were grinding ore for flotation concentration indicate that about 90 pct of the energy used in grinding is consumed in useless overgrinding.1 In addition to accounting for the consumption of a large amount of energy, overgrinding is detrimental to the flotation process. Overground slime coats larger particles and inhibits selective action by the flotation reagents on particles which by themselves could be separated very well. A further difficulty is that extremely finely ground minerals do not respond satisfactorily to flotation-collecting reagents, and both selection and recovery decrease markedly with particles finer than 5 to 10 microns.2 Conventional classifier-ball mill circuits inherently tend to overgrind the valuable minerals more than the gangue minerals because most valuable minerals are of higher density and are softer and more friable than the gangue minerals. The remedy to this situation would seem to be a separating mechanism which would separate free valuable mineral particles regardless of size and density considerations and a mechanism which would operate in the grinding mill so that valuable mineral grains would be removed from the grinding machine as soon as they are freed. A consideration of these ideas led the authors to the conception of a simultaneous grinding and flotation mechanism. So far as the authors are aware, such a machine has never been tried, even on a laboratory scale. DEVELOPMENT OF APPARATUS AND EXPERIMENTAL METHOD Apparatus development went through several stages before a really workable machine was devised. Work was started with a large cast-iron mortar 7 ½ in. in diameter and 8 in. deep. A cast-iron disk was mounted on the end of a vertical shaft so that it fitted loosely into the bottom of the mortar. On top of the disk four radial cleats ¼ in. high were bolted to agitate the ball charge as the disk, or impeller, rotated. The vertical shaft was driven at 100 rpm by a mechanism improvised from an old coffeemill type of grinder. A hole was drilled into the bottom of the mortar through which compressed air was introduced for frothing. In operation, weighed charges of ore which had been crushed to pass an 8-mesh screen were placed in the bowl along with water and suitable reagents. AT Fresnillo a series of veins that has yielded very large quantities of silver and other metals has been developed over a length of 6500 ft. and to a depth of over 3000 ft. In the course of this work striking changes in the mineralogy and metal content of the principal veins have been disclosed and are well illustrated by assay data and ore reserve calculations. This paper describes those changes and suggests their bearing on theories of ore deposition. LOCATION The Fresnillo mines and the adjacent city of Fresnillo are in the central part of the state of Zacatecas, 35 miles northwest of the capitol city of Zacatecas, once a great silver-mining center whose total production is said to place it fourth in the world. Another famous old silver district, Sombrerete, lies northwest of Fresnillo. Fresnillo is connected by a 5-mile branch with Fresnillo station on the Mexican National Railways line from Juarez to Mexico City. Lying near the southwestern edge of the central plateau of Mexico, Fresnillo ís surrounded by a semi-arid rolling plain from which rise widely scattered low hills. One of these is Proaño hill, an inconspicuous elevation rising barely 300 ft. above the plain, but in and around Proano hill are the Fresnillo mines, and it is marked now by a great gash cut by glory-hole mining. HISTORY According to an account written in 1834 by Francisco García, then Governor of the state of Zacatecas, Fresnillo was discovered in 1554, and a presidio was established there in 1568 to protect travelers on the road between Zacatecas and Sombrerete. Little is known of the earliest mining at Fresnillo, which seemingly began soon after its discovery, but by piecing together various accounts, it appears that mines there were working in 1717 and were notably active ín 1751 under an administrator named Murguía, who left detailed notes describing them. In 1757, however, the mines became inactive because of difficulties with creditors and no doubt also because of increasing water troubles, and they remained abandoned until 1830. In 1830 the mines at Fresníllo became the property of the State of Zacatecas because the interest of Governor García had been aroused by the long disregarded notes of Murguía. Under García's energetic leadership the mines were reopened, and silver production began in 1832 ín spite of serious difficulties, including abnormal rains and an epidemic of cholera. In 1835 English capital was sought to allow installation of steam-driven Cornish pumps at the two principal shafts and to build the great hacienda de beneficio (the present Proaño hacienda). The company formed in 11835 (Cia. Zacatecano Mexicana) operated successfully until 1872, when its career was brought to an end by the political and economic disturbances

those who are to lie in the torn fields of France. Today we read of Lieut. William Hague, whom we said good-by to hardly more than a month ago-—so clean, ao young, so strong—who, abandoning the professional career in which he had won such commendation and which held for him such promise, leaving his wife and his little boy to whom he was so dear, answered at once the call for men of his training, and is now dead "in the service of his country." There are many friends of that courtly and dignified gentleman James D. Hague who recall, both here and in Stockbridge, the parental pride in the promising lad of such a little time ago—the eager schoolboy at Milton, the rather grave youth at Harvard, his entry into new experiences in the Western mining world, and who, seeing him during his stay at Camp Upton, realized that the old Puritan stock was still sound and true—and now with him the struggle is over and the sacrifice made. Captain William Teasdale Hall Captain Hall, who was admitted to Junior Membership in the Institute in 1915, while still a student of mining at the University of Toronto, was killed in action in France on May 19, 1917. Captain Hall was born in Toronto in 1893, and received his academic training at Harbord College, from 1908 to 1911, when he entered the University of Toronto, School of Practical Science. During the three summer vacations of his university course, he was employed by the O'Brien mine at Gowganda, next by the McIntyre Mining Co., at Porcupine, and finally by the Mines Branch of the Geological Survey, which was conducting magnetic surveys to the north of Port Arthur. When war was first declared, Mr. Hall endeavored to join the artillery as an officer, and for the purpose secured a provisional lieutenancy with a Hamilton battery, but he did not receive an overseas appointment, and on being graduated as a mining engineer in 1915, he was offered a position in Chile, which he accepted. He left Toronto on May 27, 1915, and was engaged in Chile as a mining engineer for nearly a year. In the latter part of April, 1916, he decided to offer himself again for service at the front. He crossed the Andes and sailed for LiverpooI, where he landed on May 13, 1916. On May 27, 1916, Captain Hall was given a commission as a lieutenant in the Royal Flying Corps, 21st Squadron. He went to the front on Sept. 1, 1916, and remained there continuously. His

Much has been said and written about uneconomic and evil marketing practices in the oil industry, including such factors as loaning of equipment, price cutting and secret prices, commercial discounts, abuses of credit cards and coupon books, and so forth. It is not my purpose here to add to the discussion of those problems, but rather to attempt a discussion of some of the more basic factors in the general distribution economies of the industry. The economics of distribution in the oil industry cannot be regarded apart from the general economics of the industry as a whole. The attempt to regard them as separate has led many people into the fallacy of believing that the responsibility for the apparent evils in the marketing end of the business lay entirely at the door of the marketing end. Such a view fails to take cognizance of many underlying factors; we can only expect to understand the distribution economics of the industry if we understand its general economics. We must realize also that the oil industry today is essentially the gasoline industry. The oil industry may be said to have begun about 60 years ago. At the outset it was concerned chiefly with the manufacture and sale of kerosene, lubricating oils and greases. Gasoline was then a most obnoxious by-product. The early oil-marketing company was engaged almost exclusively in refining and marketing—it did not concern itself with production but bore the relation to it merely of a purchaser. It may be said that the urge of marketing development in those days, therefore, came from the refining and marketing end of the business. The raw material had not yet begun to exert its enormous pressure, nor had the producer of crude oil acquired a direct interest in the sale of the ultimate finished products. Since then great changes have taken place. With the development of the automobile came a vast new demand for the raw material from which gasoline could be made. No longer could the refining and marketing companies be indifferent to the source of that raw material, particularly in view of the pessimistic outlook then presented as to the probable quantity of oil in existence. The legislatures of New York and New Jersey, determined in 1919 that a vehicular tunnel should be built under the Hudson River. On July 1, 1919, an engineering staff was organized with the late Clifford M. Holland as chief engineer. After preliminary investigation it was decided to build the tunnel from Canal St., New York, to 12th St., Jersey City, which is the center of the heaviest traffic across the Hudson River. It was also decided to build two tunnels—one for west-bound traffic and one for east-bound—the tunnels to be of cast iron, built up of segments and bolted together, each tunnel to have a roadway 20 ft. wide and a clear head room of 13 ft. 6 in. The tunnels have an exterior diameter of 29 ft. 6 in. The interior lining is of concrete, the sidewalls, tiled with a vitreous white tile, and the roadways are paved with granite block. The entrances and exits at both ends are separated by two blocks so as to reduce traffic congestion. Basis of Ventilation It was recognized very early that one of the most important problems confronting the engineers was a proper ventilation system. It was estimated that each tunnel as planned would have a traffic capacity of 1900 vehicles per hr. The tunnels are 8500 ft. long between portals, and it was considered that the ventilation should be based on all of these vehicles being operated by gasoline engines. That presented a problem in ventilation unlike any other either in magnitude or character. There have been vehicular tunnels built in Europe, principally in London, but they are shorter and have a smaller traffic capacity. Up to the present time, at least, they have handled a very large percentage of horsedrawn vehicles so that the necessary ventilation has been provided for by the natural draft through the portals and open shafts. Within the last few years, however, a small mechanical ventilating plant has been installed in the Blackwall Tunnel, which has been in operation about 27 years. Manganese and silica in nonmagnetic tailings from the direct reduction-magnetic separation step were so closely associated that no physical concentration methods were effective. Dilute sulfuric acid dissolved manganese and iron rapidly; manganese in the form of silicates was virtually insoluble in sulfuric acid solutions, thereby governing the maximum extraction attained by leaching. Autoclave leaching at elevated temperatures and at high oxygen pressures reduced the iron extraction to less than one tenth without affecting the manganese extraction. There was an indication that autoclaving solubilized the manganese silicates appreciably. Elimination of iron from leach solutions was carried out by aerating the solution in the pH range of 6.5-7; a platinum-calomel electrode pair provided a reliable indicator for the end point of iron removal. The purified leach solutions were free of interfering impurities for the recovery of manganese as metal, dioxide, or carbonate. Manganiferous iron ores of the Cuyuna Range, Minn., are too low in iron content to be directly useful as iron ores, and too low in manganese content to be termed manganese ores. Common methods of physical beneficiation such as gravity concentration and flotation have not been successful in upgrading this material. The R-N process, when applied to manganiferous iron ores,1'2 produces sponge iron by direct reduction of iron oxides, while leaving manganese as manganous oxide. From fine grinding and magnetic separation of the reduced ore, a tailing is produced which is relatively rich in manganese and low in iron content. The nonmagnetic tailing can readily be leached with acids and then further processed to recover manganese in various forms. In this way, two processes, neither of which would be an economic solution to the Cuyuna ore problem by itself, may be combined to produce two marketable products, thereby rendering the over-all process economically more attractive. This article reports on the results of a leaching study on the nonmagnetic tailings, both in a batch agitation vessel and in an autoclave; on the problems involved in the purification of leach liquors by aeration; and on the recovery techniques used to produce manganese metal by electrolysis, manganese dioxide either by electrolysis or by autoclaving, and

Crushed stone leads all industrial mineral, except cement in annual value of production in the United States. It is also interesting to note that crushed stone value is exceeded only by that of fuels, cement, and iron ore among all mineral products of this country. An industry which started with hand-sledging to produce smaller sizes of broken stone for hard surfaced improvement of roadways as designed by McAdam in England about 1815 has grown into a complex industrial giant. Most of this growth started with the invention of a mechanical rock crusher just under one hundred years age (1858) by Eli Whitney Blake. This invention made possible the production of greater tonnages of smaller sizes of broken stone and greatly accelerated its use for Macadam road pavements and for railroad ballast. Stones Used for Crushing All three of the major geologic classifications of stone, sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic, are widely used in the production of crushed stone. Satisfactory physical and chemical properties can be found in each type so that economic availability becomes the prime determinant for development. Table 1 lists more common rocks of the three main groups with average values of specific gravity and toughness as measured by Deval test. This widely used classification was suggested by C. E. Lord, of U. S. Bureau of Public Roads. The physical properties were compiled by D. O. Woolf in "The Results of Physical Tests of Road Building Rock," U. S. Department of Agriculture, Bulletin 76. It should be noted that the figures given in Table 1 are averages. Very substantial variations in the physical properties of rocks within any one classification will occur. The solid surface of the earth was first made up of igneous rocks resulting from the solidification or crystallization of molten material upon cooling. These igneous rocks were disintegrated into sand, clay, and gravel by the weathering action of wind, water, chemicals, [ ] and temperature changes. The products of weathering were transported by wind and streams until they reached less turbulent areas such as oceans or lakes and were deposited. THE conventional short-time tensile test provides a reliable means of predicting the sustained load-carrying capacity of steels only when the temperature is such that continuous plastic flow does not occur. At elevated temperatures, stresses considerably less than the short-time rupture value may produce continuous flow, with fracture occurring only after long periods of time. The amount of flow or creep accompany-ing failure varies for different steels, and depends, to a large extent, on the temperature and the duration of the test. Service records of cracking stills, steam superheaters and high-temperature boilers have shown that brittle fractures sometimes occur with little or no warning. In installa-tions of this type, localized stresses are often encountered, and steels must be capable of withstanding a certain amount of deformation without fracture. The sustained-load rupture test determines the expected life and corresponding ductility of steels at various stresses and tempera-tures. It also yields additional information regarding the effect of micro-structure and metallurgical stability on the high-temperature properties.
