Homestake-New Mexico Partners operate a 750-tpd carbonate leach uranium concentrate mill near Grants, N.M. The highly mineralized water available as process water leaves much to be desired. The 628 ppm as CaCO 3 makes the use of raw water very troublesome in pipes and on filter cloths. However, the residual sodium carbonate in the final filter cake going to tails makes an ideal softening agent. To take advantage of this fact, all makeup water used in the mill is first used as tailing slurry dilution water and comes to the mill from the tailings pond. The 5-acre tailings pond serves as a thickener and 100 to 150 gpm of nearly clear solution is decanted to a pump to be returned to the mill. Since this tailings water has small quantities of uranium in the solution an ion exchange scavenger unit was installed to remove as much uranium as possible. The ion exchange raffinate is then used as final filter wash ahead of the tailings slurrying step. In spite of the large settling area this return water is not clean enough for ion exchange feed. The solids present are very fine and composed of approximately 15 pct (by weight) burnable carbonaceous material common to the sandstone uranium ores in the area, 40 pct SiOz plus 45 pct CaC03. Laboratory work showed that this material responds very well to flotation. Before deciding to use flotation, various clarifying systems such as pressure leaf filters, sand filters, and continuous vacuum pre-coat filters, were considered. Each of these could have solved the problem but with much more operating labor, more reagents and greater installation costs than the flotation step. About 100 to 150 gpm of fouled water is fed to two 66-in. Fagergren cells, in series. Reagents used at the beginning were Arquad 2HT75 and Arquad C50, at the rate of about 1% lb per 8-hr shift, or about 0.0053 lb each per ton of ore. This did not completely remove the solids but does an acceptable job. Approximately 75 pct of the slimes are a size that can be caught on a 41-Whatman Paper are removed. Removal of these slimes also allows much better settling of the coarse nonfloatable material. Advantage is also taken of this fact in a small settling tank ahead of precipitation. Removal of this amount of the slimes makes the ion t:xchange feasible. PREGNANT SOLUTION CIRCUIT The carbonate? leach-caustic precipitation method of uranium concertration does not provide for any process purification step ahead of precipitation. Therefore, any fine solids getting into the pregnant solution through the filter cloth show up in the final concentrate. This, of course, lowers the grade, and, at times, the slimy nature of these very fine solids rendered final filtration of the concentrate difficult if not impossible At Homestake-New Mexico Partners a 75-ft thickener was available for gravity clarification of 100 to 120 gpm of this pregnant solution. However this did not sufficiently remove the slimes. Laboratory investigation of the whole range of flocculants that were suggested by literature, salesmen, and friends failed to turn up anything of consequence. A continuous vacuum pre-coat filter would do the job and was investigated. The capital cost and the operating labor and materials made this a last chance choice. Following work done in the metallurgical laboratory on the tailings return water, it was found that some changes in the reagent strengths and combinations made a very definite decrease in the solids in the pregnant solution. Concentrate grade improved about 5 pct anti the final product after drying had an appreciably greater bulk density. Compared to a cost of about 2.2e per ton for pre-coat filter opelation for cleaning just one circuit, flotation costs less than 1.0 per ton of ore for cleaning two circuits. While a pre-coat filter would do a more thorough job, the flotation does all that is required for either circuit. Gravity causes the froth produced to run back into the leach circuit. This does not appear to result in a build-up of objectionable slime. No extra manpower is required; the operators in the separate areas can observe the operation of the cells and mix the small quantities of reagents as needed. Normally the 66-in. Fagergren cell requires 15 hp per cell, but this very dilute slurry needs only 10 hp for both cells. When a blast furnace has a certain defined burden and is operated under fixed conditions of blast temperature, etc., the fuel efficiency is determined by the extent to which the reducing gases can remove oxygen from the burden in the furnace stack. This is determined by two distinct factors: 1) The uniformity of gas-solid contact, and 2) The ease with which oxygen can be removed from individual pieces of burden. This latter is often called burden reducibility. When burdens were poorly prepared the first factor was by far the most important and a study of the reducibility of individual lumps was of rather academic interest. In recent years good burden preparation with emphasis on uniformly sized material has led to greatly improved gas distribution in the stack, and thus the second factor has become much more important and there has been a marked increase in interest in methods of measuring reducibility. This paper explores the Linder method of measuring such reducibility. The measurement of reducibility of burden materials must be carried out under conditions duplicating, as nearly as possible, those of the blast furnace stack. This is very difficult since the blast furnace process is a counter-current one, and thus the initial conditions encountered by the solid (gas temperature, composition, etc.) are the result of heat and mass transfer occurring lower down the stack. Any method of burden testing which does not take this into account is, at least to some extent, based on arbitrary assumptions. In an attempt to study blast furnace reactions under non-arbitrary conditions BISRA adopted the SCICE technique as a method of investigation. This technique has been used with a measure of success.' The SCICE technique, however, was found to be too slow for use as a routine test for burden materials and it was decided to construct additional equipment for burden testing. A test was required which would: 1) Be as realistic as possible. 2) Be quick and easy to operate. 3) Give some indication of the breakdown likely to take place during reduction in addition to a reducibility index. After a critical assessment of the reducibility tests which have been proposed it was decided to adopt the Linder test equipment and procedure as a basis for burden testing. THE LINDER TEST APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE The apparatus which was constructed (Fig. 1) was the same as that described by Linder2 except for minor changes in design. Linder also laid down a test procedure which he had derived from the results of investigations on Swedish blast furnaces. The variations of temperature and gas composition during the test were defined; these are shown diagram-matically in Fig. 2. BISRA's intention was to use the standard temperature and gas composition programmes for testing a variety of burden materials and also to investigate the influence of different programmes on standard burden materials, making use of information from the SCICE apparatus wherever this is possible. Up to the present, effort has been concentrated on the first part of the programme, and work on the second part has only just commenced. For each test 200 g of coke and 500 g of burden material were used. Linder had recommended that the coke and burden material should be between 1 and 1 1/2 in. and this was adhered to in early experiments on ores and sinters. Since the eventual aim of this work was to relate the test results to blast furnace operation, it was decided to carry out subsequent experiments using burden material in the size range used in the blast furnace, as far as this was possible. If the main interest was, for example, a comparison of the products resulting from different methods of agglomeration, then there would be advantages in using burden materials as close as possible to a standard size. After the charge had been placed in the reaction tube and this had been connected to the gas supply, rotation of the reaction tube at 30 rpm was started and the reduction programme was commenced, the gas temperature and composition being manually controlled according to the programme shown in Fig. 2. After the reduction test the charge was cooled in a nitrogen atmosphere. It was then removed from the reaction tube, the coke and burden separated, and the extent of burden breakdown assessed by screening it at 10 and 30 mesh. The extent of reduction was then

The subject of refractory materials occupies such an important position in all metallurgical works, and particularly in those of iron and steel, that any data concerning it must be of interest to the metallurgist. No apology is needed, therefore, for this attempt to describe the mining of fire-clay and the manufacture of fire-brick at one of the largest establishments in this country. Mount Savage is a small village situated in the northwestern part of the Cumberland coal basin, on the Cumberland & Pennsylvania Railroad, and at the foot of Savage Mountain, from which the village takes its name. Fire-brick have been manufactured here almost, if not quite, as long as in any place in America; and as the brick are still shipped to nearly half the States in the Union every month, the manufactory is probably the most generally known. In the year 1837, a company was formed called the Maryland & New York Coal & Iron Company. It built two blast-fiirnaces, the ruins of which still remain. It was in the construction of these filmaces that the first fire-brick made here were used ; and though the iron works ran but spasmodically, the brick works have been in constant operation ever since. The use of dynamite in cold weather is attended with some difficulty, owing to the freezing of the material and its consequeut liability to fail to explode when the fuse is fired. With proper methods and care the dynamite can be thawed with reasonable safety, but numerous accidents occur (more than get reported in the public press), due to carelessness in the operation and to the treacherous nature of the material, or a combination of both conditions. Dynamite will stand treatment at one time which at another time will result in explosion. An expert on explosives says that the most dangerous means of thawing cartridges are ingeniously devised by ignorant laborers; baking, boiling and toasting being favorite methods, while at a stone-quarry, in one instance, an apparatus was arranged for steaming the cartridges over a pot of boiling water. In this latter case the nitro-glycerine leaked through the canvas cover and settled on the bottom of the pot, with the result that an explosion occurred, the water acting as a tamping to the charge. The fact that small quantities of explosives containing nitroglycerine will burn quietly and without explosion if ignited by direct contact with a flame, has led to the dangerously mistaken reasoning that merely heating the explosive can produce no ill effect. Search for ore continued at a feverish pace-as can be attested to by anyone who has tried to arrange for extensive diamond drilling. The stakes are high, and so is the cost as was indicated by Selco Exploration Ltd. when they announced discovery of base metal sulfides at Uchi Lake in northwestern Ontario. It was apparently their first commercial find after 15 years of exploration at a cost of more than $10 million. For the first time in many, many years the big exploration news has come from east of the Mississippi River. In January, the New Jersey Zinc Co., in an unusually worded press release, stated that they had made a major zinc discovery of 13-50 million tons of ore averaging 5-10% Zn. New Jersey's holdings are said to embrace 500 sq mi. The ore was discovered in eastern Tennessee in the upper part of the Knox dolomite of early Ordovician age. Reportedly the mineralization is at depths of 900 to 2000 ft. Currently about 20 diamond drills are working the area for New Jersey. At least nine other major companies are prospecting the region, which now includes parts of Kentucky. Five hundred thousand acres are said to be under lease. Greatest activity is clustered around Carthage, Tenn. In Missouri, the St. Joseph Lead Co. announced plans to develop a new mine in the Brushy Creek area of the "New Lead Belt." copper and zinc concentrates will be by-products.

THE first difficulty mentioned is that in some instances two or more beds of coal separated by sandstone or slate rocks of considerable thickness in one part of a basin, are found running together in another part. Of course, we may happen to strike first the part of the basin where there is but a single seam, and in this case the bed would appear 60 divide into two or more branches within a short, distance. Such cases are not rare in the anthracite coal-fields. I would suggest as an explanation of this phenomenon the gradual sinking of the peat-marsh-the embryo coal-bed-on one side, and the moving forward of the marsh, so that on one part of the bed the formation of peat would still be progressing, while another part, being under water, would be covered with mud and sand. Thus we have different portions of the same bed of different ages. Now if the sinking of the marsh be stopped for a time, the bed will become thicker in the portions left exposed, and if the sinking now changes in direction, so that the part that had previously gone down commences to rise, we should have the phenomenon of a bed, continuous throughout, with one portion overlying another, and separated from it by rock strata. These are exactly the conditions observed in splitting beds. While one side of the lake is sinking, and the peat marsh moving on in that direction, the other side may be rising,

I feel sure that the apparent anomolies between his findings and ours arise as a result of the different experimental methods used. The modem oxygen electrode method he used is sensitive to nano moles of oxygen uptake whereas the method we used was only sensitive to micro moles at best. Furthermore, our experimental method did not permit measurements to be made in the first ten to fifteen minutes of reaction, the very time he is observing. Direct comparison of his data to ours is made difficult because of not knowing the specific area of the samples he used. However, we found that precipitation of PbS using sodium sulphide gave rise to samples of area approximately 30 m2 g - 1. Noticing the rapid decline in oxidation rate over ten minutes, as reported in Table 1, one can conclude that we could not measure the rate after ten minutes using our method. Taking the above area I estimate that at these rates only a small fraction of surface would be oxidised in a period of hours. I can only conclude that at some point a change in oxidation mechanisms occurs giving rise to a much faster rate such as we observed. Finally, I would like to comment on the apparent inertness of the homogeneously precipitated lead sulphide sample 11. This method of preparation we found to give specific areas of 20 to 30 times less than other methods and this would account for the very low oxidation rate.

In almost all coal-fields, the quantity of explosive gases given off by the coal increases as depth is attained, requiring correspondingly enlarged quantities of air to ventilate the workings properly, by diluting and carrying off the gas. Again, with increased depth there is a corresponding increased pressure caused by the weight of the overlying strata. Sandstone or slate, which would form a good roof for a coalbed at a depth of 300 or 400 feet, may be unable to sustain the pressure of 800 or 1000 feet of overlying rock. Hence, in nearly all deep mines, the miner will generally describe the roof as "bad," although the roof-rock may be a firm slate, forming an excellent roof for workings of moderate depth, but unable to stand the pressure resulting from the weight of a great thickness of overlying rock. THE instrument for the rapid determination of carbon in steel, described in this paper, was developed originally to facilitate the opera-tion of the pilot-sized open-hearth furnace in the Jones & Laughlin Research and Development Laboratory. In this small furnace, with its shallow bath, the drop in carbon is accelerated, and a rapid, reliable test for carbon content is indispensable. This problem becomes rather acute when it is desired to finish heats at a carbon content higher than can be estimated with any degree of accuracy by the fracture test. Several independent methods for determining carbon were investigated, therefore, and it was found that a relatively simple magnetic device could be made to give reproducible results. A laboratory instrument was designed and set up for the use of the furnace operators. It was tested exhaustively in the laboratory and was used with considerable success for following the carbon content in the furnace bath. As soon as suffi-cient data had been compiled to indicate that the instrument might have a wider application, a more rugged model was constructed and placed in the mill to be tested on commercial heats. Finally, about a year ago, instruments were furnished to the plant open-hearth shops, and these have been in use since that time. As a matter of convenience, the instrument has been named the "Carbanalyzer," and will be referred to by this designation in the following pages. ?

APPLICATION of electric logs has been used in correlation of subsurface structure to determine the size and shape of the oil reservoir. [ ] Such a knowledge is hardly complete until saturation and productivity are determined for the various horizons. It is difficult to use electric logs successfully for this purpose because of the many factors that influence the curves. In this work an effort was made to establish an empirical correlation between formation resistivity for a series of electric-log curves and water saturation and oil productivity of sand. Electric logs were obtained by recording with 10 different electrode spacings through the same interval of a well. In the analysis of these curves all factors except two, a dependent and independent variable, were held constant. The interval studied had been cored and a large number of samples were analyzed in the core laboratory in order to compare the values of permeability and saturation with the measured values of formation resistivity. Results of this analysis indicate: (I) the depth to which mud filtrate enters a sand body, (2) a correlation between permeability and sand resistivity for shallow penetration depths, and (3) that the water saturation for an oil sand can be determined from the measured sand resistivity after making suitable correc- [ ] tions for sand thickness. The proceduer in the last method depends on a correction for thickness factor and a theoretical curve. The accuracy of the theoretical curve is now being tested in the laboratory.

ROBERT E. TALLY,* Jerome, Ariz. (written discussion ?).-Mr. Sherman's paper, entitled "Measures for Controlling Fires at the Copper Queen Mine," embodies two new and very important features: First, automatic closing of doors communicating with the dangerous area; second, the use of a portable storage-battery fan. His other procedures, such as giving a general fire alarm, getting workmen to the surface, etc., are equally important, but have long been in use in other places. Fire and ventilating doors in connections leading to shafts, air raises, and other large timbered areas, have been in use at other mines; but the method described by Mr. Sherman for operating these doors by compressed air, through a valve on the surface, is, so far as I know, original, and should be installed in every mine where there is danger of fire. Nearly all large mines are now using artificial ventilation, with the result that there are strong air currents in the shafts and other important workings. The most important feature in mine fires is a quick and positive control of the ventilation, for it takes but a few moments for smoke to travel over a large area, with the usual results of suffocation, and destruction of property. A strong air current in an upcast shaft acts as a draft in case of fire, and unless quickly cut off the fire would soon get beyond control. An upcast shaft usually changes to a downcast when large amounts of water are used. Human lives are in more danger from downcast currents, as the smoke travels into the workings.

It contains a detailed summary of the properties of the element uranium, including its occurrence in nature, extraction from ores, and the physical and chemical properties of uranium metal. Binary compounds of uranium with hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and the halogens, among others, receive extensive discussion, including methods of preparation and physical properties such as crystal structure, thermochemistry and volatility. A very large proportion of the material in this volume is based on the results obtained in the laboratories of the Atomic Energy Project, much of it not published before. In addition, all of the open literature has been critically surveyed and integrated with the results of the Atomic Energy Project studies. Principles of Geology. By James Gilluly, Aaron C. It covers such subjects as movements of the earth's crust, records of earth movement, stream erosion and deposition, deserts, the ocean and mineral resources of the earth. The authors have concentrated on the analysis of processes that are at work upon and within the earth. rather than to present a catalog of descriptive facts and terms. The development of stratigraphy is also outlined. Pictures, maps, and tables are used to illustrate the major points of each chapter.

The possibility of increasing the efficiency of mineral processing plants by means of computer control has prompted metallurgists to examine their flowsheets more critically in order to develop practical control strategies. Control schemes in use to date generally rely on the automation of traditional and previously manually regulated control loops, e.g., the addition of reagents to maintain a constant assay or a constant pH. This approach is predicated on the availability of well established primary sensors such as pH electrodes or on-stream analyzers. Noranda Research Center, in cooperation with Noranda Group concentrators, has developed a froth level monitor and a pulp density meter adaptable to this type of control. Although some of the basic principles on which they are based have been known for some time, their incorporation into the design of reliable, direct-reading instruments which can be interfaced with a computer is believed to be novel.

INTRODUCTION The longwall method of mining coal underground is now a highly developed and accepted mining technology. However, it was only through a long history of successes and failures that this technology now has the potential for reversing the declining trend in underground mining productivity in the United States. From its early beginnings in the United States during the 1800's, several species of longwalls have evolved. The evolutionary record consists of a series of overlapping birth-death eras, with each era giving way to another unique longwall technology. Typically, an era begins when some new longwall technology appears in response to a new technical opportunity or economic need. This new technology is adopted initially by only a few innovators. Later, other imitators get on the bandwagon and the technology diffuses throughout the user population. But evolving technical demands and socio-economic circumstances eventually cause many of the adopters to discontinue its use. This paper chronicles seven eras in the history of the evolution and utilization of longwall technologies in the United States. Some of the important factors that have influenced this history are discussed. Some distinctions are drawn between the operators who were first to adopt longwalls (innovators), and the imitators who followed. Statistics are presented which show that longwall mining is being adopted at an exponentially increasing rate, substantiating the forecast for a significant number of new longwall installations in' the future. Potential barriers to this increased utilization of long- walls are noted.

IN AUGUST, 1927, the writer examined certain copper deposits in New Mexico, which occur in beds of sandstones and shale, and in connection therewith reviewed the literature upon deposits of this type. Such deposits are known and have been reported upon at various points in Texas, Oklahoma, Arizona, Colorado, Wyoming and Utah, but in New Mexico they have been given more development than elsewhere and apparently occur there more conspicuously than in the other states. Some 25 years ago the writer examined deposits of similar origin in northern Arizona and more recently other deposits in western and southwestern Colorado, and these examinations have led him to realize how widely scattered are the deposits and how generally non-commercial they are. On superficial development, to one without a comprehension of their geologic nature, they are alluring on account of occasional small amounts of high-grade ore and much misplaced capital has been expended upon them. This paper, therefore, aims to present briefly certain theories of genesis, some details of which may possibly be new, and to lead up to practical conclusions which may be useful to other geologists and engineers. A bibliography of the more important literature upon such deposits is given below.2 Coffin's Bulletin upon the Radium, Uranium and Vanadium Deposits of Colorado, published in 1921, is a particularly clear discussion. The most comprehensive recent statement is Butler's. He describes a large number of occurrences in Utah and connects them up genetically with deposits in other states.

An interesting paper by J. E. Merion and Edward Hart, in Volume I., No. 2, of the Journal of Analytical Chemistry, on the Decomposition of Blast-Furnace Cinder by Acid, describes a plan of sampling the cinder by means of a previously-heated iron bar thrust into the cinder car or into the cinder at the notch, and then allowed to cool, thus chilling the cinder which adheres to the bar, and rendering it decomposable by hydrochloric acid, of 1.12 sp. gr. A short series of results is given, from which the deduction follows that blast-furnace cinder " is decomposed perfectly when chilled." Where many silica determinations are to be made, this method, if reliable, would effect notable economy of time and reagents. The conversion of insoluble silicates by fusion with an alkaline carbonate, together with the subsequent solution, evaporation, drying, etc., is destined to remain the standard method. But all fusionmethods are time-consuming and expensive. Chilling appears to render the supplementary method available for all practical purposes, in the determination of silica in cinder. But, with a view of securing more evidence on the subject, and in view of the fact that uniform results were not obtained by employing this method, it was decided to test the method in the laboratory of the Thomas Iron Company where a large number of silica determinations are made. The experience met with may not be devoid of value, both theoretical and practical. When I first received the announcement of this meeting I was pleased to see that this 14th APCOM Symposium had expanded its range of interest. One new topic to be considered this year is long range or strategic planning--the continuous process by which current risk taking decisions are made systematically, and with the greatest knowledge of future impact. Long range planning should receive our attention. It is the first step in the management process and the foundation of many--if not all --key managerial decisions. Improvements made at this stage of managing are almost certain to be of benefit in later stages of decision making. It is obvious to many of us that in a physical process such as mineral beneficiation, one does not concentrate all of one's attention on the flotation design without also considering the grinding, cycloning, and desliming stages of the process. Taking this a step further it would be equally erroneous to find a mineral engineer designing a mill without due consideration for mine, smelter and refinery and beyond that the sales goals, growth and profit objectives of the firm itself. And yet, how many times have we seen organizations staff and reorganize without consideration of an overall plan; without adherence to the management process which by its definition, calls for a plan first, followed by the appropriate organization and staff. The computer applications traditionally discussed at APCOM meetings have concentrated on areas dealing with things and people-- the implementation of the plan, rather than with concepts and ideas, the formulation of the plan.

The necessity, on the Pacific Coast and throughout the semiarid regions in particular, of the conservation of waters for agricultural, industrial and mining purposes has forced itself upon the minds of those directly or indirectly interested in these industries. To meet the requirements of the case, storage must be provided for the flood-waters so abundant during the rainy season in order to insure a constant and unfailing supply during the summer months. Such storage can only be obtained, in the greater number of instances, by the erection of reservoir-walls of great height. The feasibility of employing earth or timber in the construction of such high dams is questionable, especially when (as is often the case) they must be placed in torrential streams. The experience of recent years with masonry dams, throughout this and foreign countries, has demonstrated that such dams, when intelligently and correctly designed and properly constructed, will meet the requirements of larger storage by means of increased height. The failures of masonry dams have been few; only two of any consequence being on record, namely, that of the Puentes dam, in Spain, in 1802, and that of the Habra dam, in Algiers, in 1810.* On the other hand, the failures of wooden and earthern dams are innumerable. The following are some of the most important structures constructed in recent years.
