Exploratory work was conducted in the fabrication of integrated circuitry, specifically linear amplifier circuits, by three general methods: 1) monolithic diffused silicon; 2) a combination of metal thin-film and monolithic diffused silicon; and 3) a hybrid of metal films and diffused silicon on an alunina substrate. In these linear amplifier integrated circuits the followzng conditions were desired: very high-frequency response, high voltage gain, and good thermal tracking stability of electrical characteristics. The resulting circuit designs imposed problems of isolation between elements, layout and smallness of size of active elements, and close tolerances on electrzcal characteristics of the passive elements. Interconnection problems for specific designs resulted from the small dimensions involved and the topography of the hybrid fabrication techniques. The desired integrated-circuit characteristics were achieved with the technologies of categories 2 and 3 above. Solutions to the problems imposed by these characteristics lay in the ability to isolate czrcuit elements of small size while providing a layout designed to minimize element-to-element variations. Sufficient freedom in the formation of passive elements was achieved by uniting the metal film and the monolithic silicon technologies. The most satisfactory designs were based on the beam-lead interconnection and isolation technique. SINCE the advent of integrated circuits, major emphasis has been on fabricating digital integrated circuits. Linear circuits require high performance, high voltage, and tighter tolerance components which are not always compatible with the capability of process technology available for fabrication of these circuits into integrated form. Fortunately the growth of newer and improved processes and materials for fabricating integrated circuits has been an accelerated one. This has now made possible the translation of stringent performance requirements of the linear circuits into microminiature integrated circuits of the same performance. In the exploratory work of fabricating high-performance Linear Integrated Circuits—LIC, the following objectives were formulated: i) fabrication of high-frequency transistors such as the type 2N918 isolated on a single silicon substrate; ii) fabrication of medium-frequency transistors having a very high gain at low collector currents such as the types 2N930/2N2484 isolated on a single substrate ; iii) fabrication of tight-tolerance, high-valued resistors having low temperature coefficients of resistance and stable thermal tracking characteristics, these resistors to be fabricated on an active or passive substrate; iv) simultaneous fabrication of complementary transistors—pn and pnp-on the same silicon substrate; v) fabrication of newer active elements such as MOS, FET transistors along with the conventional active and passive elements on the same silicon substrate. State-of-the-art assessment f all the available processes, materials, and technology to meet above objectives indicated that economic fabrication of LIC cannot be achieved by a single technology for all types of linear circuits. Where design and performance of a given linear circuit can be modified and tolerated to the extent of a particular technology, then alone is it possible to fabricate a LIC using a single process technology such as all diffused, planar technology. In order to evaluate this economic breakpoint with design and performance compromise in fabricating LIC, it is essential that a thorough understanding be obtained of techniques, potentials, and limitations of all the various process technology and materials

This chapter covers certain aspects of open pit production planning based on experience, pointing out approaches to planning that may help produce a realistic picture for evaluation and operation The subjects discussed are roads, preproduction stripping, dump planning, dewatering, the relationship of production planning to equipment selection, and computer methods for the short-range or operational pit planning process Actual determination of ore limits, pit design, and production schedules are covered in other chapters This discussion is somewhat general. Specific problems that occur in mine planning are extremely varied, and it is not possible to cover many of them in a chapter, therefore, only some of the principles that are important in the approach to open pit production planning problems will be discussed.

THE temperature coefficient of electrical resistance of pure metals is high and therefore the resistance increases rapidly with rising temperature. In 1871, Siemens suggested the use of this property as an accurate means of temperature determination. Owing to practical difficulties, particularly the contamination of the metal and consequent permanent change in its resistance and its resistance-temperature relation, this method fell into disrepute as a practical standard until revived later by Callendar and Griffiths, and subsequently by Holborn and Wien, all of whom showed that the earlier difficulties were not inherent in the method but incident to the mode of protection of the resistance coils. Following .the work of these investigators, the problem of temperature measurement by this means has been the subject of careful study and has now assumed an importance second only in practical adoption to the thermo-electric method. It is generally recognized, both here and in Europe, that the standard temperature scale should be the thermodynamic as it permits the evaluation of high temperatures on the basis of the radiation laws of Stefan and Bolzmann, of Rayleigh, and of Wien and Planck, on a scale consistent with that obtained by means of the gas thermometer at low temperatures. Lord Kelvin showed that only. a very small correction, amounting to about +0.7° at 1000° C.-almost within the limits of experimental errors-is necessary to adjust the constant-volume nitrogen thermometer to the ideal thermodynamic scale.

Many mineral veins occupy faults, and movements on certain warped fault planes have resulted in openings. On normal faults the steeper parts have the widest openings, and on reverse faults the flatter parts have the widest openings. Theoretically the width of the opening is the sine of the angle of deflection times the amount of movement on the fault plane, but actually the widths of some of the openings are probably less because of readjustments of walls along joints or of other readjustments. The first treatment of the subject seems to have been in a book on mineral veins by John Leithart, published in Newcastle, England, in 1838. Later the subject was treated in various texts published in Germany, in England, and elsewhere. The subject was not given much prominence in the earlier American literature on economic geology, but has interested several workers in that field in the past decade. In this paper examples of districts showing ore shoots on warped faults, with relations noted, are described. Fault veins of the three depth classes of veins are noted. Many epithermal veins are in normal faults, and commonly the larger ore shoots are in their steeper portions. Many mesothermal veins are in reverse faults and, many others are in normal faults. The flatter parts of veins in reverse faults are commonly wider than the steeper parts, although they are not always as rich as the steeper segments of the veins. There are not many hypothermal veins in faults of measured displacement. Many attempts have been made to eliminate most of the crushing plant and all the grinding plant in the process of ore beneficiation by substituting a combined crushing and grinding unit which could take coarsely crushed ore and reduce it to a fine size in one unit. This unit normally would have no other grinding media than the ore itself. This is true autogenous grinding, as we understand it today, and should be clearly distinguished from pebble mill grinding, where pebbles are substituted for steel balls to grind a ball mill size feed. To compete in efficiency with normal methods of crushing and grinding, the autogenous mill must use less labor and steel to produce an equivalent product at equal or lower power consumption. In general terms, a unit to perform these functions must have means to crush the ore to fine sizes and to then further reduce the crushed pieces by grinding. In other words, to do efficient autogenous grinding, there must be a proper balance established between crushing and grinding rates. There is not much point in crushing at too fast a rate if the grinding means are not present to reduce the small particles to the required product size. The crushing means used in an autogenous mill are impact forces of two kinds, namely, (1) the rock travelling at high speeds striking the shell, and (2) the lifters travelling at high speeds striking the rock. Grinding is probably effected in a manner equivalent to pebble milling.

Launching a panel session isn't easy but after Associate Dean Howard Hartman from Pennsylvania State had made his statement, it was obvious that the balloon would go up. Hartman sees a crisis and gave its dimensions. Even with enrollments declining, there are not enough graduates being recruited by the mineral industry. Opportunities in the mining field are not attractive to youth in the face of competition from other disciplines. Nor will we be able to fill our ranks with good men from other engineering disciplines because they won't be attracted either. Salaries are too low. In 1966, mining engineers from Penn State averaged $660 per month starting. The average of all other engineers was $683 per month. The mining engineers ranked seventh out of nine disciplines. The bad image of the mineral field is created in part by industry which offers poor working conditions and inconsequential jobs and in part by the schools which have unimaginative curricula and poor teaching. Hartman called for immediate action and had his own set of solutions ready. "The gut of the problem is pay. Boost starting engineers $100 to $150 a month and older employees in commensurate manner. Compensate for poor working locations by better environment on the job." He did not fail to add that improvement of the public image of the mineral industry is needed. He called for elimination of all of the "schisms," or subdivisions of mineral industry curricula, and suggested a unified curriculum with a name such as "Geo-engineering."

Dispersion-strengthened sintered aluminum products are normally manufactured from surface-oxidized aluminum powder, SAP,' or from atomized aluminum powder.' The powder-blending technique consisting in mechanical mixing of the constituents has been used in the manufacture of numerous dispersion-strengthening alloys, but has never been successfully applied to aluminum alloys. This technique may, however, be applicable if it is possible to produce an unagglomerated mixture of the constituents in the form of fine powders, and the present study was initiated to test this assumption in the aluminum/aluminum oxide system.3 Table I lists the two grades of aluminum powder and the aluminum oxide powder used in the manufacture of the alloys. MD 105 A is an aluminum powder with an average grain size less than 5 IJ., which is isolated from the MD 105 powder by centrifugal separation in cyclohexanol. The aluminum powders and the aluminum oxide were blended in a high-speed blender and then subjected to cold compaction and hot compaction at 550" to 600°C. Subsequently the compacts were hot-extruded with an extrusion ratio of 15 to 1. The alloys were evaluated by tensile testing at room temperature and at 400°C, microscopic examination, and heat treatment at 500°C followed by tensile testing at room temperature. For the purpose of comparison, a commercial SAP quality supplied by Swiss Aluminium Ltd. was tested in the same manner. OUT of the depths of each business cycle we emerge with a stimulus for greater efficiency and a realization of progress in industrial technique. The recent years have not been an exception to this rule, and in retrospect we sense that significant advances have been made in mining practices on the Mesabi Range, with emphasis on speed of production and economy of operation. A survey of such changes does not reveal anything that is fundamentally or basically new, but it is apparent that ideas and machines that have found wide application in industry elsewhere, with necessary modifications, are being put to productive use in mining iron ore. Inno-vations in transporting and conveying ore from the open pits stand out with greatest prominence, so that, in the main, it will be with these fea-tures that this paper will treat, in the review of progress made to this date. The late years have witnessed the development of small deposits for open-pit operation, the cleaning up of pits nearing exhaustion, and in two large operations the approach to the limit for haulage by steam locomotives, owing to grades, making it necessary to recover the ore in slopes, track benches and below the power-shovel limit by a milling and scram operation. For several years small standard-type dump trucks have been used in clean-up or scram operations within the pits, but during the season of 1936 the first effort. was made to use heavy truck haulage in the trans-portation of stripping and iron ore. The new units in use today vary from 15 to 20 tons in capacity, and are equipped with powerful gasoline or Diesel engines and supplemented by trailers or wagons on rubber or crawler treads. The Diesel engine finds favor with most operators because of fuel economy. These units develop upward of 125 hp. in the 15-ton trucks. The speed of these trucks varies from 2 miles per hour in low gear to 35 in high gear. The transmission affords 12 speeds forward and 3 speeds in reverse.

SUMMARY ONE of the important reserves of manganiferous iron ore is at Boston Hill, near Silver City, New Mexico. The area consists of a faulted block of gently dipping Lower Paleozoic shale, dolomite, limestone and sandstone, which have been intruded by a roughly circular mass of quartz-bearing monzonite porphyry and subordinate dikes. From a noselike protuberance of the intrusion radiate many premineral faults, which have localized much of the hypogene mineralization. Three important stages of hypogene mineralization can be recognized: (1) mesitite, a manganiferous iron magnesite, (2) quartz sulphides, and (3) barite-galena. The carbonate stage is widespread but stronger near the intrusion. The quartz may have been derived from hydrothermal alteration of the igneous rocks. Barite-galena is most important in the Chloride Flat mining district, about one mile north, where argentiferous galena provided silver for the supergene ore. The hypogene carbonate, lean in iron and manganese, has been oxidized and consequently enriched by meteoric waters containing an excess of oxygen and carbon dioxide to form ore bodies of intimately mixed hematite and pyrolusite. The ore bodies, at one place attaining a length of 1600 ft., a width of 300 ft., and a thickness of 25 ft., are largely confined to areas of brecciation and to spreads from faults in Silurian dolomite beneath soft Devonian shale.

INTRODUCTION Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company, and its subsidiary companies, operate and manage mining, beneficiation, and pelletizing operations in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, the province of Ontario, Canada, and the State of Western Australia, Australia. The concentrates and natural ores vary mineralogically, physically and chemically. This paper describes the techniques employed in pelletizing the various concentrates and ore fines. The plant operations described are the Republic, Humboldt, Tilden, Empire and Pioneer in Michigan, the Adams and Sherman in Ontario, and the Robe River in Western Australia. Table 1 contains further details regarding design and operating capacities, commissioning dates, and participant ownerships. Allis-Chalmers grate-kiln systems are utilized in Michigan and Ontario, and Dravo straight-grate systems in Western Australia. Currently, the Empire and Tilden operations are being expanded. At Empire the additional pelletizing unit, identified as Unit IV, will have a design capacity of 8 996 metric tonne/d and is scheduled for startup May 1, 1979. The Tilden operation is being doubled with the additional pelletizing unit, identified as Unit 11, having a de- sign capacity of 12 599 metric tonne/d. Startup is scheduled for January 1, 1980. Laboratory research has been conducted to evaluate the characteristic effects of condensate saturation on the mobility of gas in typical reservoir rocks. A pump with two pistons provided phases in equilibrium at controlled flow rates and constant liquid-vapor volume ratios. Core samples were tested in a holder that permitted sealing steady-state phases in the pore spaces under flow test pressures for weighing with sufficient precision to give an accurate measure of the attained saturations. Parameters of the study were pressure, apparent velocity, flowing liquid-vapor volume ratio, fluid composition, core material and length-to-diameter ratio. Tests were conducted at 515 and 1,515 psia to determine the effect of pressure on the mobility-saturation relationship. Influence of the apparent velocities 0.30, 0.15 and 0.07 cm/sec and of five liquid-vapor volume ratios from 0.0001 to 0.01 was determined at 515 psia The principal fluid system was nitrogen and and separator liquid from a Gulf Coast condensate, but the effect of a condensate of different viscosity was also determined. The significance of a possible concentration of liquid near the outlet end of the test cores was investigated. Core materials included a consolidated sandstone and a low-permeability limestone. Relative mobility and liquid-vapor volume ratio relationships are concluded to be dependent on pressure, saturation and, to a lesser extent, on velocity. For each porous medium and fluid there is a minimum saturation essential to two-phase flow, and high velocities of flow have only limited effect on saturations in this range. INTRODUCTION It is now recognized that knowledge of the availability of a reservoir gas — the period that gas may be recovered from a reservoir at a given rate — is as important as the estimate of gas in place. When reservoir conditions are such that pressure decline owing to production will result in retrograde condensation, liquid saturation can increase in the structure around the production well in a way that may restrict flow capacity, and hence future availability. l Based on a numerical solution of transient radial flow of single-phase gas-condensate fluids, 2 a program for computing the accumulation of condensate in a reservoir and the effect of this condensate on deliverability has been developed. During this development a need evolved for data that described the influence of pressure, velocity of flow and condensed liquid on mobility as recovery progressed. This paper presents the results of experimental investigation to obtain insight into the mobility relationship at reservoir pressures of gas-condensate fluids. A core holder for flow tests at reservoir pressure was developed to weigh the core and its fluid contents under pressure to determine saturation. A specially constructed pump was used to drive a two-phase fluid through the core until a steady state prevailed. The core was used as a differential device, and properties measured were intensive rather than extensive. APPARATUS Fig. 1 shows a schematic representation of the major pieces of equipment used in the mobility determination. The weighable core holder is connected to a two-piston, constant-displacement pump. Attainment of steady-state flow is indicated by stability of the flow differential read from the high-pressure manometer. WEIGHABLE CORE HOLDER An important part of the data needed was the mobility-saturation relationship. This required that mobilities and saturations be measured at pressures, flow velocities and liquid-vapor volume ratios characteristic of condensate reservoirs.

Liquidus surfaces in the ternary system FeO-Fe2O3-SiO2, were determined from 1250' to 1450°C by the procedure of equilibrating small samples in platinum crucibles, quenching, and microscopic examination. The experimental results were combined with previously published information to construct a ternary diagram for the system showing the entire temperature-composition range of stability of iron silicate slags. Metallurgical applications of the diagram, especially in copper smelting, are discussed briefly. IRON oxides are almost unique among the common oxide constituents of metallurgical slags in that the iron occurs in two different states of oxidation, ferrous and ferric. Moreover, in liquid slags the degree of oxidation of the iron is readily changed by reactions of the slags with oxidizing agents or reducing agents. This behavior of iron oxides in slags accounts, for example, for the effective transfer of large quantities of oxygen through slag layers in open hearth steelmaking. In this process, oxygen supplied by reactions at the gas-slag interface is dissolved in the slag with the oxidation of ferrous iron to ferric. Ferric oxide is transported across the slag layer by convection, and at the slag-metal interface the oxygen reacts with liquid metal while the ferric iron is reduced back to the ferrous state. Another group of processes in which variation in degree of oxidation of iron has great practical importance is in copper smelting. In matte smelting and converting, such large proportions of the iron are oxidized to the ferric state that problems are encountered in preventing or controlling the formation of solid magnetite. The ferrous-ferric relationship also affects the attack of iron oxides on high-SiO2 refractories, which appears to be most severe under reducing conditions for which ferrous iron predominates. Darken and Gurry' determined the chemical properties and phase equilibria of pure iron oxide slags. Their data show that iron oxide melts can have compositions ranging almost all the way from FeO to Fe2O3. The melts of lowest oxygen contents, which exist in equilibrium with metallic iron, approach ferrous oxide in composition but still have a small percentage of ferric oxide. The melts of highest oxygen contents, which have oxygen dissociation pressures of 1 atm, are above magnetite in oxygen content, with over two-thirds of the iron in the ferric state. The previously established phase diagrams for silicate slag systems all show FeO as the iron oxide component. However, Bowen and Schairer? who determined the FeO-SiO2 diagram and many of the other diagrams used by slag chemists, have been careful to point out that their systems always contained both ferrous and ferric iron. Thus, their data are for limiting mixtures with minimum contents of ferric iron, obtained by melting and equilibration in iron crucibles. Under these conditions, the Fe2O3 percentages found by analysis were small enough to justify simplification of the published phase diagrams by calculating the Fe2O3 to equivalent FeO and ignoring Fe2O3 as an additional component. On the basis of experimental measurements of melting points of iron oxides on silica in the presence of various gas mixtures, Darken3 worked out phase diagrams for the Fe-Si-0 system which show the important phase equilibria in terms of temperature and gas composition. As described by means of quantitative pole figures, the inside texture of highly rolled aluminum and copper strips may be approximately described by four equivalent ideal orientations near (123) [121]. If rolled in reversed passes, the surface texture of copper is also near (123) [121], that of aluminum is (100) [011]. The inside texture of highly rolled brass is (110) [112]. The surface texture is the same, if rolled in reversed passes. The surface texture of all three metals is related to the inside texture, but asymmetrical, if rolled without reversal between passes. MANY previous investigations dealing with the subject of the present work were reviewed by Wassermann.1 Barrett,2 Brick,3 and Richards.' The recent introduction of quantitative methods for pole figure determination by Decker, Asp, and Harker,5 Schulz5 and others made it possible to reinvestigate some of the finer points which the earlier more qualitative photographic methods left undecided. The rolling textures of silver and of 70-30 cartridge brass have been quite consistently characterized by the ideal orientation of (110) parallel to the plane of rolling and [112] parallel to the rolling direction. On the other hand, it has been recognized by several investigators that certain other face-centered cubic metals, such as copper and aluminum, developed rolling textures rather different from that of brass. These textures have been variously described by the following ideal orientations, singly or in combinations with each other: (110 [112]: (112) [111]; (135) [335]; (135) [211], etc. The discrepancies usually have been attributed to the lack of sharpness in the textures and to the attendant difficulty of associating "ideal orientations" with pole figures showing great scatter of orientations. It seemed desirable to investigate by the new quantitative methods to what extent the apparent lack of sharpness may have been brought about by the qualitative methods used previously, rather than by the textures themselves, and to decide, if possible. between the various ideal orientations which have been proposed. Another problem, not satisfactorily settled by earlier investigations. concerns surface textures in rolled metals. For instance, in rolled aluminum the surface texture in some cases appeared to be similar to the texture inside the sheet, whereas in other cases it was reported to be entirely different.' The conditions under which such differences may have arisen, and the possibility of the occurrence of different surface textures in other face-centered cubic metals do not appear to have been examined in detail. The present work was undertaken to investigate the above questions. Some of the results obtained have been described- riefly. Experimental Procedure Specimen Preparation: In the present investigation 2s aluminum, electrolytic tough-pitch copper, and commercial 70-30 brass were used. These materials were available in the form of cold-drawn rods. 1 in. diam for tough-pitch copper and commercial 70-30 brass and 11/2 in. diam for 2s aluminum. The cold-drawn bars were alternately annealed and rolled 30 pct lengthwise in several cycles until a penultimate thickness of 0.500 in. was reached. The intermediate and the penultimate anneals were carried out for 30 min at 380°C with 2s aluminum, and for 30 min at 550°C with 70-30 brass. The variation in hydrogen content of basic open-hearth steels during refining and the effect of changing from steam to air atomization were studied. The water content of the furnace atmosphere, the slag basicity, and the degree of oxidation of the slag-metal system largely control the hydrogen in the steel. SMALL amounts of hydrogen have an adverse effect on the ductility of steel and a wide range of hydrogen contents has an adverse effect on the internal soundness of both ferrous and nonferrous castings. This has been of major concern to the metal industry, both manufacturers and fabricators, for many years. As one of the results of continuing investigations of the hydrogen problem, much has been learned about methods of reducing the hydrogen content of liquid metals below the relatively high levels that are normally associated with such phenomena as rising ingots and excessive porosity in sand casting. However, it was not until a reliable and simple method for sampling and analyzing liquid metal was developed that much progress was possible in quantitatively evaluating the effect of steelmaking practice on hydrogen contents at levels below 6 to 8 ppm. Throughout all the work described in the following presentation the Geffner pintube technique was used to obtain samples of liquid metal1 * and the tin-fusion method, developed at Massachusetts Institute of Technology,2 was used to analyze the samples. Before attempting a systematic experimental program for minimizing the hydrogen content of open-hearth steels, it was necessary to determine the variation in hydrogen in the open-hearth bath during the normal processing of a heat. The logs of ten heats are illustrated in Figs. 1 through 7. The number at each point on the graphs refers to the number of pintube samples analyzed for hydrogen. An increase in the hydrogen content of the liquid metal during the early period of refining is apparent in all heats. There is evidence of a decrease in hydrogen later in the refining period, see Fig. 2, for example. Therefore, the existence of a maximum hydrogen content at some intermediate time during the refining period is anticipated. To test for the existence of a maximum, the data illustrated in Figs. 1 to 5 were grouped together so that they could be examined on a collectively comparable basis. The grouping was effected, as illustrated in Fig. 8, by superimposing Figs. 1 to 5 so that the apparent hydrogen maxima coincided at a fixed position, indicated by the zero on the time axis. Also, by vertical adjustment until the graphs appeared to the eye to be superimposed, the hydrogen scale was made to show the change in hydrogen content. That is, a standard amount was subtracted from the hydrogen values for each heat. Therefore, Fig. 8 represents a generalized presentation of the data and, for this reason, cannot be used to predict the actual hydrogen content of the bath during refining, but rather to show the probable rate of change in hydrogen during refining. Statistical examination of the grouped data in Fi.g. 8 shows that the apparent. increase and suhsequent decrease in hydrogen are real and confirms the existence of a maximum in general. The average increase In hydrogen during the early period of refining is between 0.8 and 1.3 ppm per hr, and the

THE area in which spodumene-bearing pegmatites occur extends from Gaffney, S. C., in a northerly direction to Lincolnton, N. C., a distance of about 16 miles. The zone averages 2 miles in width. Interest in this area was first aroused by the discovery of small amounts of cassiterite in the peg-matites and in greissen which occurs on the walls of some of the pegmatites. Attempts were made from 1880 into the 1920's to mine and concentrate cas-siterite, but there were no successful operations. In 1935 L. M. Williams became interested in the area and began prospecting by trenching and sinking several small shafts. He gradually gained control of a considerable acreage south of the city of Kings Mountain, N. C. Mr. Williams states that he produced some ore from a shaft which he shipped to the Maywood Chemical Co. in the late 1930's. In 1937 G. H. Chambers of the Foote Mineral Co. visited the area and examined several properties, but the lithium market was too small to support the necessary concentrating plant. Early in World War II the Solvay Process Co., encouraged by various federal agencies, acquired the Williams properties and leases and started a drilling program to develop reserves for spodumene mining. A study of this area was also made under T. L. Kesler by the U. S. Department of the Interior Geological Survey. Starting in 1942 a concentrating plant, water supply dams, and shops and other buildings were constructed. The Superior Stone Co., a neighboring crushed stone operator, was awarded a contract to mine and crush the pegmatite ore. Late in 1943 the plant started operations, which were continued until February 1946. A drop in demand for lithium chemicals forced it to close and remain closed for several years. In 1948 the Foote Mineral Co. became interested in assuring itself a source of lithium ore on the North American continent, to be used in the production of lithium ore chemicals, and inspected properties in Canada, South Dakota, and North Carolina. The North Carolina deposits were the most promising. In the fall of 1950 the company leased the Solvay interests with option to buy and acquired additional properties. Renovation of the mill and preparation of the quarry for mining was begun in earnest in January 1951. A new crushing plant was built and construction started in July 1951. The flotation process used was developed in the North Carolina State Minerals Research Laboratory located at Asheville, N. C. Foote is now in the process of expanding its production. The crushing plant is being revamped and much of the old milling equipment purchased from Solvay will be replaced by new. Mining equipment of suitable capacity has been received and is in use. The frontispiece is a general view of the mill. The orebodies consist of pegmatite dikes composed of fine-grained albite and quartz, with varying amounts of mica and spodumene. The latter may amount to as much as 50 pct of the rock, but the overall average is about 15 to 20 pct. Tin, columbite-tantalite, beryl, and other valuable minerals are present in varying small amounts. These dikes, which intruded into the Roan Gneiss underlying most of the Piedmont area, strike approximately N 30 E and dip about 85" to the west. The gneiss has the same strike but dips about 70" west. The dikes lie in a belt extending from Lin-colnton, N. C., to Gaffney, S. C., and passing through

A new approach to processing an indigenously available low grade molysulfide concentrate by chlorination with elemental chlorine in presence of oxygen is reported. Recovery of nickel and copper values associated with the sulfide concentrate by suitably treating the residue obtained after chlorination is also reported. In the chlorination process, a gaseous mixture of chlorine and oxygen in the volume ratio bf 2:5 has been passed at 1.66 x 10- 5 m3/s for 1800 s over a 0.01 kg batch of molysulfide concentrate at a temperature of 573°K. Most of the molybdenum has been volatilized as molybdenum oxychloride which has subsequently been extracted in water. The molybdenum value from the aqueous solution has been recovered in the form of calcium molybdate (CaO.MoO3) by treatment with calcium chloride (CaCI2). In an alternative processing scheme, the molybdenum rich solution has been treated with an oxidizing agent (K2S20f.J) and allowed to boil to recover a major portion of the molybdenum value in the form of molybdic oxide (MOOS). The spent charge obtained after molysulfide chlorination has been mixed with about 1 wt % sodium chloride and heated at 773K under an oxygen atmosphere. The reacted mass has been water-leached to yield a nickel-copper bearing solution with limited iron. The process liquor appears to be well suited for further processing by known hydrometallurgical recovery processes for nickel and copper. In the conventional process of molybdenum extraction, the molysulfide concentrate (-59% Mo) is first subjected to roasting to produce molybdic oxide. The oxide is then further processed in sequential steps involving vacuum distillation, ammonia leaching, and calcination to higher purity prior to hydrogen reduction to metal. In India there is at present some small tonnage production of molysulfide concentrate from a byproduct recovery plant of the M/s. Uranium Corp. of India Ltd. (M/s UCIL), Bihar. Efforts are being made at this laboratory to process the low grade fraction of the concentrate which contains sulfides of copper, nickel, and iron; quartz; and chlorites. Here, the conventional routes involving roasting and vacuum distillation appear unsuitable to produce an acceptable quality of molybdic oxide at high recoveries. Formation during roasting molybdates of some of the impurities present in the sulfide concentrate make subsequent vacuum distillation less efficient. In view of these problems, in earlier work reported from this laboratory the low grade concentrate has been processed hydrometallurgically to P. produce calcium molybdate. Starting from this molybdenum intermediate, processes have also been developed for the production of molybdenum and ferromolybdenum. Chlorination as an alternative to roasting for metal sulfides has been drawing considerable interest. The high reactivity of chlorine, the relatively low temperature of operation, the suitability of application to low grade resources, the convenience of recovering sulfur in non-polluting form, and the purity of chlorides which are separated by distillation all favor chlorination. In recent years, considerable work has been reported on the chlorination of common metal sulfides. In the field of molybdenum extraction from its sulfide resource, use of chlorination technology has been rather limited. Senderoff and Labrie3 were the first to chlorinate molysulfide concentrate with elemental chlorine at about 823°K to molybdenum pentachloride for use in the electrolytic preparation of molybdenum. The only other reported work, by Haver, Uchida and Wong, involved reaction between molysulfide and chlorine at 673°K to recover sulfur. The reaction products were, however, identified as molybdenum pentachloride and sulfur monochloride.

INTRODUCTION This paper analyses certain of the financial considerations which will commonly apply in relation to the following questions: - what equity structure or project vehicle should be adopted for the exploration and/or exploitation of a project by more than one unrelated participant? - what vehicle should be adopted by a participant for its participation in a multiparty project? Due to local, politically motivated laws in certain jurisdictions, or due to the overriding requirements of a dominant participant, there may be little choice of the underlying multiparty structure which may be adopted for the exploration, appraisal and/or development phases of a project. Nevertheless, even in such circumstances, attention should be given, at least in the preparation of the related documentation, or in considering methods of participating or funding the project, to certain of the points discussed below. This discussion of financial considerations in the context of the more commonly adopted multiparty structures concentrates primarily on fiscal, financial accounting, financing and funding aspects. TYPES OF PROJECT VEHICLE FOR MULTIPARTY INTERESTS The well known types of vehicle adopted for the participation in a project by more than one participant (assuming that the participants are effectively unrelated) are as follows. Joint Venture (unincorporated joint venture) By far the most commonly adopted structure for mining ventures, a joint venture is usually defined and documented in terms to distinguish it from a partnership for important tax and legal reasons. In essence, this is a contractual association of more than one participant to carry out a specific commercial project or purpose. The relationship between the separate participants and their respective rights, interests, obligations and liabilities are agreed between the participants in one or more contracts (viz Joint Venture Agreements or Joint Operating Agreements together with ancillary documentation). Unlike other project vehicles of participation, in most jurisdictions there is no specific body of law governing joint ventures. The participants thus enjoy contractual freedom to negotiate whatever deal they may wish between themselves. Jointly-Owned Project Company (corporate joint venture) A very familiar vehicle, this is a separate and distinct legal and tax entity incorporated under the company laws of the place of incorporation to undertake specific objects, and granted specific powers, in relation to the Project. Although certain rights, interests and obligations may be circumscribed in the governing corporate instruments by the promoter participants, the corporation laws of the relevant place of incorporation, and the selection of such governing laws (assuming freedom of choice) and future political changes in such corporate laws, should be carefully considered. The use of a company in a multiparty structure may be peripheral to the project itself as a specific purpose vehicle (for example, a joint sales agent or marketing company or a joint borrowing vehicle) or it may form a central function such as in the case of a tolling company which will own the project for legal and taxation purposes and raise financing with the backing of the shareholder participants commonly by the adoption of take-off, throughput and/or user agreements. Partnership This is a legal relationship, subject to the often wide-sweeping restrictions of the relevant local partnership laws, under which the participants have agreed to carry on a business venture together with a view to profit. THE lead deposits of Missouri may be divided into three districts, the southwest, middle, and southeast. As too much time would be required to devote a detailed account to each district, only a description of the modes of occurrence of the lead ores in the southeast district will be given. The lead mining region proper of Southeast Missouri is embraced in an area of about twenty-five miles in width by about one hundred in length. The country embraced in this district is very broken, and traversed by ridges from one hundred to three hundred feet in height, with an occasional knob rising higher. Porphyry forms almost the entire substructure of the region, with here and there outcrops of granite. The crystalline rocks were eroded into ridges and valleys before the deposition of the limestone took place. These porphyries are older than the Silurian limestones, and "belong (according to Pumpelly) to the Archaean (Azoic) formation, of which they may be the youngest member in Missouri. They are the near equivalents, in point of age, to the great iron-bearing rocks of Lake Superior, New Jersey, and Sweden."12/02/2007

Lead was mined and smelted near Falling Creek, Va., to supply the local demand for bullets and shot. This was the first mining and .smelting of lead in what is now the United States. 1632. In a report made on the minerals of New England, lead-ore is mentioned. (Bishop, I., 470.) 1650. Supposed beginning of mining by Jesuits in Pima county, Ariz. 1651. Grant of lead-mine at Middletown, Conn., to Gov. John Winthrop. 1682. Lead-ore supposed to have been discovered in Wisconsin by Nicholas Perrot. (K. D. Irving, Mineral Resources of Wisconsin, Trans., viii., 498.) 1700 Discovery of lead in Missouri by Penicaut, one of Le Sueur's party. Tile same expedition discovered lead near the southern boundary of Wisconsin in August of the same year. 1712.
