Today, there are four alternatives available for disposal of highly toxic, non-radioactive hazardous waste: deep well injection, chemical processing, landfill and incineration. However, based upon research conducted by the author, a fifth alternative now exists. Disposal in salt. Salt, because of its chemical characteristics, is an ideal medium for retention of inorganic hazardous waste. Except for a few elemental compounds such as lithium and potassium, there is no reaction with sodium chloride. In the family of inorganic wastes, there are basically seven suites of waste that may be mixed together without any chemical reaction. The process developed by the author would be to take a suite of waste, either dewater or add moisture, add a solidification agent to the mix and slurry pipeline the mass into a cavern. Residence time before hardening can be adjusted, but the nominal time until full solidification is 48 hours. Once solidified, the mass will reach compressive strengths exceeding 3000 psi. The slurry can be introduced into an evacuated cavern pumped free of brine, or it can be placed beneath the brine and the waste will force the brine to the surface. The latter technique requires a high degree of engineering control to prevent contamination of the brine leaving the cavern-thus creating more hazardous waste and additional problems. The Environmental Protection Agency endorses the concept both at the research level and within EPA Headquarters. The technology will soon be utilized in a salt formation in Texas.

THE legislatures of New York and New Jersey, determined in 1919 that a vehicular tunnel should be built under the Hudson River. On July 1, 1919, an engineering staff was organized with the late Clifford M. Holland as chief engineer, and this staff was given a number of problems to solve, such as location, size, type of tunnel, method of construction, method of ventilation and cost. After a period of preliminary investigations and studies it was decided to build the tunnel at Canal St., New York, connecting 12th St., Jersey City. This is the center of the heaviest traffic across the Hudson River. It was also decided to build two tunnels-one for west-bound traffic and one for east-bound traffic-the tunnels to be of cast iron, built up of segments and bolted together, each tunnel to have a roadway 20 ft. wide and a clear heat room of 13 ft., 6 in. This is to provide for two lines of vehicles in each direction. The tunnels have an exterior diameter of 29 ft., 6 in. The interior lining is of concrete, the sidewalls tiled with a vitreous white tile and the roadways paved with granite block. The entrances and exits at both ends are separated by two blocks so as to reduce traffic congestion.

Fine coal cleaning by froth flotation has become common practice in the US with more than 73 kt/d (80,000 stpd) treated in this way. In spite of this large tonnage, developments in the automated control of coal flotation circuits have lagged significantly behind those for mineral systems. The primary reason is that instruments have not been available for the online measurement of carbon ash content or other critical variables in coal slurries. A second reason is that the influence operating variables have on coal flotation are not completely understood. During the last few years, some of the needed instrumentation has been developed, while an improved knowledge of the flotation process itself has occurred through mathematical modeling. As a result, certain control strategies for coal flotation are beginning to emerge. This paper attempts to evaluate several control strategies using a detailed flotation dynamic simulator, Dynafloat. After construction of a process matrix for the system of interest, promising alternatives for linking manipulated and controlled variables were analyzed. To develop combined grade and recovery control strategies, it was necessary to construct a grade/recovery map with the aid of the simulator to drive the system to known, final, feasible grade/recovery operating conditions. Finally, an advanced strategy that uses an on-line model to identify disturbances and take control actions is proposed.

The most extensive oil shale development program ever undertaken in the United States has been that carried out by Colony Development Operation at Para- chute Creek in western Colorado. Field development goals were completed this spring, with the remainder of the $24 million joint venture program, primarily engineering, environmental and economic analysis, due to be finished by the end of 1972. Upon completion of the overall program, a decision concerning a commercial venture is expected. This program points up the increasing attention being focused on oil shale as a source of crude oil and energy for the U.S. at a time when the nation's supply of oil produced by conventional methods is far from adequate to meet the demand. The oil shale reserves of the Green River formation in Colorado, Utah and Wyoming are the largest hydrocarbon reservoir. The Piceance basin of Colorado, alone, contains some 80 billion bbl of shale oil recoverable by modern methods in reserves more than 30 ft thick and containing at least 30 gal of oil per ton. The U.S. Geological Survey has estimated that the total shale oil reserves of the Green River formation in the states of Colorado, Utah and Wyoming is more than 600 billion bbl of oil in deposits containing at least 25 gal per ton of shale oil.

INTRODUCTION THE deposition of metalliferous lode systems takes place at considerable depths and no one may observe the process. We see only the end results of the process and from these we seek to construct a theory that will account for them. Because there is an obvious relation between many lode systems and intrusive igneous masses, it is a natural inference that they have formed by fluids that were expelled from such masses. The metalliferous lode systems have been deposited by ascending thermal fluids that have risen mainly from great irregular bodies of intruding magmas which are called batholiths. Probably 95 per cent of such lode systems have formed in connection with acidic or "granitic" batholiths and probably less than 5 per cent have formed in connection with basic intrusives. The study of lode ores, therefore, should include the study of the intrusion and differentiation of the batholith. It was noted long ago1 that certain tin-bearing deposits are commonly associated with small stocks. That small stocks are cupolas of larger intrusive masses has generally been recognized. Butler,2 in his studies of the ore deposits of Utah, showed that the chief deposits in Utah are in and near the stocks; that is near the "apically truncated

(New York meeting, February, 1913.) IN the study of ore deposits water plays a very prominent part. The small group of igneous ores involve it least, but in all the rest it is an invariable feature. The ground-water, therefore, is perhaps as appropriate a subject for discussion before a session of the American Institute of Mining Engineers as any topic which might be selected. The theme is if anything the more appropriate, because two very important contributions to it have already appeared in the Transactions. The great essay in 1893 of Franz Posepny,1 systematized and classified the subject, and was doubtless not without its influence in leading to the presentation in 1900, by C. R. Van Hise, of an important contribution entitled Some Principles Controlling the Deposition of Ores.2 We all recall the discussions of 10 or 12 years ago, and the interest in these themes which then prevailed in the Institute. They are collectively accessible in the separate edition wisely assembled by Dr. Raymond, and now to be supplemented by the Emmons Volume. Views have been progressing in the past decade or more, and new evidence has been brought to light. A general summary and concise statement may, therefore, not be without interest.

WHILE many parts of Canada's pre-Cambrian shield are well served by railway, it is frequently necessary for prospecting purposes to proceed farther into areas in-accessible by rail. To such areas in summer the canoe was at one time the accepted means of travel for the prospector while the dog team was much used in winter. Al-though summer travel was much improved by the development of the outboard motor, the lack of facilities for cheap transporta-tion has been a serious hindrance to the employment of capital in opening up the distant fields. The pre-Cambrian surface of Manitoba, like that of Ontario, is hummocky, with rounded hills and ridges of rock alternating with basinlike depressions and valleys oc-cupied by lakes and rivers or by many low-lying portions covered with muskeg. Routes to the mines have not usually been direct or easy and seasonal vagaries have presented problems in themselves. In summer, water transportation may be the cheapest method for the longer dis-tances but it is not every water route that will satisfy the conditions of loading freight onto a boat or scow and of conveying it without interruption to its destination. A USEFUL accelerated weathering test should be capable of placing any series of metals quantitatively in the same order of endurance as that noted under a particular set of actual exposure conditions. The development of such a test must necessarily depend to a considerable extent upon data obtained from a wide variety of exposures. This paper offers preliminary data from exposure tests on nine metals placed in 11 locations in the Lehigh Valley, within a radius of 20 miles from Palmerton. The exposure conditions vary from a severe industrial atmosphere to a pure rural atmosphere. The data are offered as evidence of the necessity for the identification and evaluation of the variables of corrosion and as illustration of some of the variations to be considered in the development of a useful accelerated test. It is quite clear, from this evidence, that a useful accelerated test must be versatile to the extent of showing the probable variations of corrosion resulting from differences in atmosphere as well as from differences in the metals. The paper is presented solely with the object of pointing out the wide variations in relative merits of several common metals in resisting corrosion and without any thought of initiating controversy regarding the, merits of particular metals. For this reason the metals are designated only by symbols in the tables and no key is given to these symbols.

(written discussion).-There is no reason to doubt that the relationship between the rate of flow and the impelling force of all fluids can be expressed by a general typical equation . that takes cognizance of all relevant factors such as density, viscosity (or its reciprocal mobility) and nature of channel-walls. Most fluids that are commonly conveyed by flow in confined channels are so highly mobile that they may be considered non-viscous, hence for these fluids the factor of viscosity does not need to appear in the equation. Water is the outstanding example of this class of fluids and its dynamic behavior has been so thoroughly investigated that proven formulas pertaining thereto, be they rational or empirical, would naturally serve as prototypes for the other non-viscous fluids. As non-viscous fluids can be classed all gases and vapors, most unsaturated aqueous solutions, gasoline, alcohol, etc. Viscous fluids comprise those that have a sluggish flow such as most. oils, tar, molasses, etc., the high viscosity of which is due to shearing resistance between molecules; a force that must be taken into account in figuring the flow of fluids of this class.

THE Sunrise iron mine of The Colorado Fuel and Iron Corporation is in Platte County, Wyoming, about 110 miles north of Cheyenne. It is served by the company-owned Colorado and Wyoming Railway, which connects with the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy and the Colorado and Southern railways at Guernsey, Wyoming, a distance of 6 miles from the mine. The original Sunrise claims were staked mainly by United States Army officers and soldiers stationed at old Fort Laramie, because of small showings of copper in the Carboniferous limestones that form a horizontal capping overlying the Huronian iron ore. A small copper smelter was operated for about three years at Fairbanks, now an aban-doned town on the North Platte River. As many of the copper shafts and test pits near the present Sunrise mine were deepened, they pene-trated the capping and encountered iron. ore or gray sericitic schist, and were abandoned. Evidence of an early interest in iron ore was found when the Chicago claim was stripped for mining. A narrow, winding crevice was dis-covered, which led downward 20 ft. through the capping to the underlying soft red hematite, in which a room 10 by 14 by 7 ft. had been excavated. Stone hammers and wedges and a few rusted pieces of iron were found on the floor, and the evidence is conclusive that the excavation was used up to rather recent times by Sioux Indian medicine men, to provide war paint.

No one of the live subjects of the day, to which the attention of the mining engineer and metallurgist should be turned, is of greater practical interest to him than electricity in its applications to various mechanical, chemical, and metallurgical operations.. The object of this paper is to call the attention of my fellow-members and associates of the Institute to various new, as well as comparatively old, developments in the science and art of electricity which seem to promise results of advantage. Too many of the comparatively old applications have been neglected by the mining engineer, which, if he had given them a place among his appliances, would have assisted him greatly. The telegraph may be noticed as one. Its use is, however, confined to a person having skill in the manipulations of the key, the reading of the alphabet, and familiarity with the sounder. One of the simpler forms—the call-bell—has a range of application far greater as to distance and convenience than the old wire-pull, or the hoarse voice of the windlass-man or the bucket-dumper. A few Leclanche cells, two or more electric bells, and a mile or more of mire judiciously placed will put the superintendent, at his office, in communication with the foremen of his mills and mines, so that by the aid of a code of signals, great advantages may be gained without necessitating a knowledge of the Morse alphabet, or of the mechanical voice of the sounder. THE stresses which initiate deformation processes in metals are funda-mentally important in the study of the mechanical properties of metals. A point of inflection in the load-elongation curves obtained for single crystals1 has been rather too readily interpreted as a true yield point, and the critical resolved shearing stress on the plane of slip taken as a material constant. Even early work showed that the stress at this point varies with rate of loading, but it has not been generally appreciated that creep tests under static loads alone are suited for determining the existence or nonexistence of a yield point.2 It has now been shown by Miller that single crystals of zinc3 when loaded statically begin to yield at loads too small to measure; as a result there is no case now known, apart from that cited in the present paper, in which a true critical stress for yielding has been demonstrated for single crystals of metals. The case of iron has especial interest: the existence of an upper and lower yield point and of an elongation at the yield point in ordinary iron and steel marks this substance as unusual, though the effects have been found to a very minor degree in other metals and alloys. ? Most alloys do not show such marked phenomena when appreciable yielding begins, and accordingly modern practice is to speak of the yield strength of such materials, a stress read from the load-elongation curve after elongation has begun, rather than yield point. The special behavior of iron suggests that it is more likely that single crystals of iron should have a true yield point than other metals.

The effect of fast-neutron irradiation on the micvo strcture of a common reactor pressure-vessel steel, A212 Grade B, was studied using thin-foil transmission electron microscopy. The dislocation density of the irradiated material is considerably greater than that of the nonirradiated control material. Annealing studies indicated that dislocations and hardness ill the irradiated material annealed out—as docs the radiation-induced embrittlement according to other- investigators— at temperatures STEELS in nuclear reactors are affected by neutron irradiation. In the American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) A302B and A212B steels commonly specified by designers for reactor vessels, between 650° and 800°F. However, the dislocations and hardness in control samples cold-worked to 9 and 70 pct did not anneal out readily, and a high dis -location density was observed, even after a 1-hr anneal at 850°F. Based on the hypothesis that cllrster defects, rather than the increased dislocation density, are primarily responsible for mdicltiotz-iudziced e)nbriftlen7ent, reconzmendations are made for reducing the susceptibility to such ernbrittlement. exposures at a temperature of 550°F or lower to neutron dosages encountered during a 20- to 30-year life (-3 X 10'' nvt, >1 mev) may increase the nil-ductility transition temperature (NDT) as much as 300" or 400".'9 Therefore, to prevent brittle failures in reactor structures, extreme caution is required to reduce thermally induced stresses during all reactor shutdowns and startups when the temperature is below the NDT of the pressure vessel.

INTRODUCTION In 1975 278x10 3 tonnes of zinc was consumed in the United Kingdom, of which 69.3x10 3 tonnes was obtained from secondary sources. Of this secondary zinc 37.7x10 3 tonnes was used in brass making, the remainder was used in non metallic applications - eg oxides and salts. Many forms of zinc-bearing wastes arise, for example as galvaniser's drosses and residues, fumes from ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgical processes, and filter cakes from rayon manufacture and metal finishing. In the case of zinc-bearing dusts and fumes, the quantities available for recycle are at present restricted by the failure to collect them efficiently, hut environmental factors are leading to improvements in gas cleaning, with the result that quantities collected will increase and then exceed those required for the production of chemicals, so that some dusts may either have to be dumped or processed to metal. The recovery of zinc from steelmaking dusts is practised in W. Germany (1) and Japan (2) employing processes based on reduction in rotary kilns in order to produce sponge iron and a zinc- rich oxide suitable for feeding to the zinc-lead blast furnace. Although the zinc-lead blast furnace is the only zinc-making process used in the UK, no similar treatment of steelmaking dusts is carried out, a pilot scheme was tested by the British Steel Corporation, but development was abandoned for economic reasons. It appears to be cheaper to pelletise suitable dusts and export them for treatment elsewhere.

THE thermocouple as a device for the measurement of temperature is rivaled only by the platinum-resistance thermometer. Both instruments are capable of the highest precision, but the thermocouple, on account of its cheapness, ease of construction, and small cross-section, is finding a continually widening field of usefulness for industrial control as well as for laboratory measurements. Formerly, the thermocouple was subject to two disadvantages: errors due to lack of homogeneity of the metal and the labor involved in the interpolation between fixed points on the temperature scale. Former publications from the Geo-physical Laboratory have described the methods' for the selection and testing of thermocouple wire and have presented standard calibration curves2 for platinum-platinrhodiun and copper-constantan couples, so that the most important objections to the thermocouple as a precision thermometer have been removed. The calibration tables published in 1914 covered the range 0-1755° for the platinum-platinrhodium couple and 0-350° for copper-constantan. It has seemed desirable to extend the table for copper-constantan to -200 and also to include a table for the Hoskins thermocouple. Accordingly, in this paper, the new tables are presented, together with a brief explanation of their use; and, finally, certain diagrams and a paragraph on "cold-junction corrections" are given. Standard Calibration Tables.-In Fig. 1, which illustrates how the electromotive force (e.m.f.) of each of the three couples varies with the temperature, the temperatures of one junction are plotted as abscissas and the corresponding thermo-e.m.f.'s as ordinates. FROM the earliest times when our prehistoric ancestors laboriously fashioned crude tools and weapons from meteoric iron until our day when we manufacture steel in 150-ton open-hearth furnaces, the production of iron and steel has played a dramatic and important role in the development of civilization. Progress in the science of refining iron ore into iron and steel was painfully slow for many centuries. The keen scimitars of Damascus, the broadswords of the English knights, the coats of mail of French knights, and the Iron Pillar of Delhi are well¬known examples of medieval metallurgical technique. Expense and the scarcity of raw materials originally limited the distribution of iron and steel products. It was not until the nineteenth century that a determined effort was made to adapt the use of steel to peaceful pursuits. The spectacular and rapid strides made in the manufacture of steel during the last hundred years were hastened by the invention during the decade 1860 to 1870 of two great steelmaking processes-the Bessemer and the open-hearth process.

THE turn of the century was marked by the appearance of a series of greatly important pieces of research that became the foundations of modern physical metallurgy. It is, of course, some- what misleading to ascribe the growth of a science, or a branch of engineering, to the work of a few men, as it is to write history generally in terms of great men, for this approach neglects back- ground development, and tends to overemphasize the importance of immediately subsequent events; the correlative and steady growth of the basic sciences added to the resources of the new science of metals--developments in basic science .years later were to appear in their application to metal systems. Yet it is useful to emphasize the importance of these relatively few pieces of research. THE PHASE RULE The work of Willard Gibbs on heterogeneous equilibria, which included the derivation of the phase rule, was published obscurely in the journal of the Connecticut Academy.30 Unearthed by the German physical chemists (evidently by van der Waals, to use Ostwald's phrase, "aus dem staubigen Fundort"), its importance to the study of alloys was pointed out by Jüptner31 and by Le Chatelier; its application to polycomponent systems, and to metal systems in particular, was developed by Rijn van Alkemade (1893), by Le Chatelier;8a and especially by Roozeboom (1899-1900). The work of Raoult on the depression of the freezing point by solutes led to the study of the phenomenon in amalgams and shortly to metal systems. Work was done, by Roberts-Austen and others, on the initial freezing temperatures of binary alloys-the liquidi, data applicable to Raoult's work. Van't Hoff in 1890 had pointed out

THE decreasing solid solubility limit at the titanium-rich end of the Ti-Cu constitutional diagram,' Fig. 1, suggests the possibility that titanium-rich alloys may be age-hardenable. However, results obtained by Holden et al. reproduced in Fig. 2 show that after quenching from 790°C the age-hardening of an alloy containing 1.7 pet Cu is very slight, while a 0.8 pet alloy decreases in hardness, during heat treatment at 400°C. It was believed possible that powder samples of alloys might show different results from the lump samples used by Holden et al., since small particles are often more sensitive to diffusion processes than larger samples. Consequently, a 1.9 pet (by weight) Cu alloy was made by the technique of levitation melting," checked for homogeneity, and filings of 48-65 Tyler screen size were cut from it for aging experiments. The filings were helium-quenched (by a technique described previously)' from 790°C, sealed in vacuo in silica tubes and aged at temperatures of 400°, 450°, and 500°C. Microscopic and X-ray examinations failed to reveal any structural changes during the aging process. This is not too surprising since early stages of precipitation do not usually manifest themselves in ways that are readily detectable by metallographic methods, and the extent of precipitation on overaging a 1.9 pet alloy is very small. However, hardness readings (taken on a Bergs-man micro hardness tester, using a 25 g load applied to a diamond indenter) do show a hardness peak at each aging temperature, Fig. 3. About a dozen readings were taken on each heat treated sample; the highest reading and the lowest reading were ignored and an average taken of the remaining values. In

The occurrellce of an impurity in minute quantity offers no guarantee that its effect will be inconsiderable because dissolved substances often modify the properties of a metal quite out of proportion to their concentration. In such cases the determination of solid solubility must be accepted as a problem of considerable difficulty, requiring the use of especially purified materials and methods not ordinarily used in the metallurgical laboratory. This aspect of the equilibrium between metals and their oxides is especially important and a search for fundamental data reveals little except conflicting opinion even concerning the systems of common occurrence and interest. Rhines and Mathewson1 in 1934 studied the solubility of oxygen in solid copper by annealing to equilibrium in air and gave reasons for the failure of other methods, notably the ordinary procedure of heat-treatment followed by microscopic examination, to yield reliable results. In this paper, a similar study has been made of the solubility of oxygen in cobalt. The simple theory of this method is outlined below.
